In 1996 the Cowboy Junkies could have gone one of two ways: they could have veered away from their familiar melancholic, somber sound or dug deeper into the groove. They chose the latter. Margo Timmins's distinctively sleepy, seductive vocals never sounded better--here she perfects the art of the subtle attack, best exemplified by the radio hit "A Common Disaster." The band knows when to pull back (it lays a spare, delicate foundation for her wispy words on tracks like "Something More Besides You" and the achingly beautiful "Now I Know") and when to let a groove build ("Speaking Confidentially," "Lay It Down," "Come Calling"). "Angel Mine" wears the band's love for country music plainly on its sleeve, and the stunning "Bea's Song" shimmers. A definite highlight in the band's career. --Lorry Fleming

3 1/2, going on 4.......2007-06-25
I like _Lay It Down_ but have never found it as interesting or listenable as _Black-Eyed Man_ or as haunting as _the Trinity Session_. It's still a good album, though.
Not Their Best But A Good One.......2006-12-21
This is an album that fans of the band tend to rate very highly. For me, although I think it is very good, I rank it slightly below some of their previous releases. The album continues the patented Cowboy Junkies sound with lush music, cerebral lyrics and gorgeous vocals. The band rocks out a bit harder in places than on previous album (although the junkies never really heavy), and for the most part it works. The single "A Common Disaster" even received some radio airplay. Highlights include the album opener "Something More Besides You" with the great opening line "One foot stands before the crib, the other by the casket...". The title track "Lay It Down" is a good one as is "Bea's Song (River Trilogy Part II) which is an ongoing trilogy divided between 3 albums. Another interesting one is two versions of the same song sung from different perspectives. "Come Calling (his song), and "Come Calling" (her song) is a clever idea. In conclusion this is probably the least favorite of the Cowboy Junkies albums that I own, but there is no such thing as a bad Cowboy Junkies album and this one is very strong as well.
Lay It Down.......2005-08-12
I first heard this CD at work when a new employee brought it from home. I had never heard of Cowboy Junkies before. He played it, and I was immediately hooked! Margo's haunting, spellbinding voice on the songs is nothing short of mystical, and you really cannot help but love it. So far, this is my favorite album by them. A must for any lover of Cowboy Junkies... or even just good music!
As heavy as they ever got...........2004-05-27
No one would ever accuse the Cowboy Junkies of being a rock and roll band, but their first album for Geffen Records found them turning the volume up a degree or two. "Lay It Down" is the most electric of the CJ's many records, yet the truly amazing thing is that the band loses absolutely nothing of their original charms. While the music may be a little denser and a touch louder, Margo Timmins never lets the sonics intimidate her subtle manner of singing.
Nowhere is this more evident than "Lay It Down's" best known song, "Common Disaster." Moving at a near pop song clip, the blues bassline and somewhat distorted guitar offer a tasty hook over which Margo sings brother Michael's tale of revenge planning ("I cut the list to one and you're name's on top"). It's one of the strongest songs of the CJ's career. Through the course of the Junkies' albums, one of the most consistent factors has been Michael's writing and "Lay It Down" is no exception. The his and hers versions of "Come Calling" show his love of country irony, and "Bea's Song" is a gorgeous entry that should find its way into someone else's record someday. He is, without question, one of the most underrated songwriters of the past two decades. With "Lay it Down," the second best album from the Cowboy Junkies treasure chest of recordings, he and his band continue to prove why their cult remains as strong as ever.
Shattering.......2003-11-30
This is the first CJ album that I purchased. A friend of mine was playing it in her car and I had to do a double take when I heard it. Now, I own every CD that the CJs have done. Honestly...this is the best of all of the CJs albums. Alot of people think that Trinity Sessions is their best. I would strongly disagree. Lay it Down and Pale Sun, Crescent Moon are their two best musically, lyrically and vocally. If you are gonna start, start with Lay it Down and then move to PSCM. This album is one of my top ten CDs in my entire collection (and I have HUGE collection). It is stark and haunting and hits you hard in the gut. Despite criticisms to the contrary Margo's voice is powerful and subtle at the same time. I've seen her live and she can belt it out when she wants. Her restraint is part of the overall CJ ambience.
Frankly, I don't think there is a single band out there in the last 10 years who can even touch the CJs when it comes to lyrics. Maybe October Project got close--but the depth and beauty of the lyrics on this album are amazing.
This is a "must own" album from one of the most underrated bands of the last 20 years.

Customer Reviews:
A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10
Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.
The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).
This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.
I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.
a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15
I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.
Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

Wow. Twenty-six-year-old Jennifer Knapp has done far more than rest on her laurels for her much-anticipated follow-up to 1998's Kansas--the record is a subtle, yet stellar, leap forward. The songs have pop hooks that stick in your brain for hours; the music is tightly woven and expert, yet rarely too slick. Expertly produced by pal Toby McKeehan, layers of complimentary, warm sound surround Knapp's folk-bluesy, expressive voice like the foam atop a perfect latte. The lyrics are introspective and spiritual but they have this real-life quality to them, and that is her true gift. One has to struggle not to identify with Knapp when she sings, on "A Little More," of the struggle to live a Christian life: "A little more than I can give / A little more than I deserve / Unearth this holiness I can't earn." The only justifiable quibble is that, at 36 minutes, Lay It Down is way too short. --Mike McGonigal

3.5 stars / towards maturity and songcraft.......2007-05-31
I stumbled across Jennifer Knapp while trying to locate a sound similar to Natalie merchant/10,000 maniacs: and while there are a few similarities between Jennifer Knapp and Natalie Merchant - I do think that Jennifer has originality, and her own voice. does anybody really sound like Natalie Merchant? I mean there is the Innocence Mission, but even Karen doesn't sound like like Natalie on each song or, album.
On with the review: if you like singer-songwriter's with a sweet voice, and a gift for writing in a poetic style you will enjoy this album. I listen to this disc and find it to be a worthy addition to my collection,
Note: it advances a Christian point of view, yet, I do think all people who have a fondness for poetic verse, together with, folk music will enjoy this CD.
Lastly, I give one recommendation for Jennifer: I do think she should rock-it up a little bit adding percussion, some heavy drums. This is a transitional kind of album: where the artist is seeking to cover new ground - as she grows artistically and gain the maturity that is surely to follow as a lyricist -- and let's hope she adds drums and a few individuals to play Rickenbacker guitars in the fashion of Roger McQuinn and company. But, in all honesty, the girl has talent, Jennifer should have a following both inside, and outside of CCM. There is too much dreadfully mediocre music in the hallowed halls of CCM, but in spite of CCM's mediocrity, Jennifer can shine!
Soulful sound & Honest lyrics.......2007-05-12
I love this CD. Jennifer Knapp continues to amaze me with her soulful sound and honest lyrics.
Great Second CD by Knapp.......2006-06-28
Jennifer Knapp is definitely missed on the Contemporary Christian music scene. Her Christian-folk music is engaging, and draws the listener into a place where soft, medium, and fast tempo songs draw the listener toward God in a way that is authentic and moving.
Songs like the title cut and Little More seem plaintive, evoking the times all Christians have when they need reassurance and comfort. Knapp has been taking some time off for the past few years. We will all be blessed when she returns.
Great Lyrics, Great Sound.......2005-07-13
Jennifer Knapp does an awesome job again in her second album. Like 'Kansas', 'Lay it Down' has deep, moving lyrics combined with Jennifer's incredible voice. Her throaty voice is a delight to the ears. Her sound has a folk music feel to it.
I highly recommend this album.
The Melissa Etheridge of Christian Music.......2004-10-24
Jennifer Knapp is an excellent musician, somehow managing to spin folk, rock, and Christian into one musical category. She has a distinct voice that is just gritty enough to grab your attention and soft enough to make it oh-so pleasant. I haven't heard a song by this artist that has fallen short yet.
While I haven't done any research on Knapp, I would have to guess she has studied music for a while. She seems to know how to write music and lyrics that stir the soul. Her songs flow quite well, and she seems at ease performing with some of the top artists in the Christian music industry.
Ya can't go wrong with this CD. It's a keeper!
See ya next review.

Mr. Man & Boobonic bring a very tight album for their debut. After basically coming from nowhere, I never heard them on another song before this album or after this until their 2nd album dropped 3 years later. The Philly natives bring 14 songs, with the Neptunes providing beats for 10 of them (and actually they're for the most part very nicely produced even though I usually can't stand more then 2 or 3 of their beats on 1 album), T-Mix of Suave House nicely does 2 songs, and Epitome & Just Blaze each do 1. Of the 14 songs on here, 3 are classics, another 2-5 are near classics, 4 are ok and the rest are good, none I really skip over. Guests are minimal, rapping on 3 songs and doing hooks on a couple others. A must have album for rap fans.

Philly's Most Wanted did a great job on their new album. they came much better than their last album. This one is bangin from the beginning to the end.
Formulaic Yet Fresh.......2004-04-05
The recipe for successful commercial hip-hop seems to be overly thuggish rapping over bright and bouncy club-style beats. Everyone from Jay-Z to N.O.R.E. to P. Diddy has repeated this formula time and time again. Enter Philly's Most Wanted. This young duo from Philadelphia released "Get Down or Lay Down" in 2001. The vast majority of the record was produced by The Neptunes, who, after crafting hits for Mystikal, Jay-Z, and Beenie Man the year before, were on the verge of huge success that they are currently enjoying, making songs for every popular act in the music business.
The Neptunes created beats for a large number of the songs here. This makes them sound very interesting. The two rappers, Boo-Bonic and Mr. Man, constantly rap about nothing but beautiful women, getting respect from the haters, packing heat, and selling drugs. Sound familiar? Of course. But how can you be mad when they are presented over such a lush soundscape? The line-trading of "Philly Celebrities" has such a bouncy beat that you cannot help but think of riding with the top down in the summertime. And the verses spit on "Cross the Border" and "Please Don't Mind" sound so slick that the average lyricism and tired subject matter (pushing drugs and picking up girls at the club, respectively) doesn't even phase you.
Of course, there are a few weak points. By the end of the CD, the trademark Neptunes beats sound a little boring and the lyrics become a little predictable. But still, you can't get mad when The Neptunes produce great music and the few other guest producers (including Just Blaze) fare just as well. Congratulations to Most Wanted AND The Neptunes for creating a rap album that although based on what has been done and will be done many more times, still manages to sound fresh, giving you beats to nod your head to, ride to, and quick lyrics you won't need to decipher but rather just listen and enjoy for music's sake.
Not great, but a good start..........2001-12-03
This album would've probably done alot better in the times of Mase and Puffy. (...) Almost every song is good or desent, but it still needs alot of work. My favorite song is Dream Car (Do You Wanna Ride). This song would've dominated in the times of Rolleys and shiny suits.

Customer Reviews:
Historically important choral music, wonderfully performed!.......2004-05-25
For over 10 years, The VocalEssence Ensemble Singers and Chorus (conducted by Philip Brunelle) has presented an enduring series of concerts showcasing the talents of trailblazing African American composers. Now this wealth of music is available outside the concert hall through a series of recordings called WITNESS.
WHAT A MIGHTY GOD presents 20th Century choral arrangements of music from the African American spiritual tradition rooted in spirituals and gospels, including Harry T. Burleigh's "My Lord, What a Mornin'" (1929), "Walk Together Children" (William Henry Smith, 1937) and more contemporary composers like Sanford Moore's "Go Tell It On The Mountain" (1993.)
There are excellent notes about the genre, however, in light of the historical significance of this music I'm surprised and disappointed to find no biographical information about the composers, not even birth and/or death dates, with this CD. I feel this is a crucial component in an "outreach" project like this, especially since most of these composers are not well known. Still I highly recommend it for the music alone.
The other three CDs are available as single titles, or in the boxed set THE WITNESS COLLECTION which includes:
WHAT A MIGHTY GOD: Spirituals and Gospels for Chorus
DANCE LIKE THE WIND: Music of Today's Black Composers
GOT THE SAINT LOUIS BLUES: Classical Music in the Jazz Age

Amazon.com essential recording
Even before her tragic death at 41 (in 1953), Kathleen Ferrier became a legend for her incomparable voice, her simplicity and sincerity of expression, and her indomitable courage. This compilation of recordings originally made in the 1940s includes four arias from Gluck's Orfeo ed Euridice recorded live in Holland, which show why Euridice was one of her signature roles. Two beautifully sung Handel arias, two sacred songs by Maurice Greene, and delightful duets by Purcell and Mendelssohn (sung in English with another beloved English singer, Isobel Baillie) are greatly enhanced by the inimitable pianist Gerald Moore. But the core of this recording is the Mahler cycle. Here, Ferrier's voice takes on a new warmth and intensity; her deeply inward, direct expressiveness gives the bereaved parent's grief and anguish a devastating impact. Her reading of the last song could be a bit more spooky, but the end is heartbreaking in its submissive resignation. The Vienna Philharmonic and Bruno Walter are in their native element. --Edith Eisler
Customer Reviews:
The incredible Kathleen Ferrier recordings!.......2003-05-20
Voice fans, rejoice -- EMI has finally remastered these recordings and released them as one CD at budget price!
While Mahler's "Kindertotenlieder" would be the chief reason for purchasing this CD right away, it also contains several morsels, equally fascinating. Purcell and Mendelsohn's duets, Handel's arias, Greene's spirituals, and 3 live arias from Gluck's "Orfeo ed Euridice". In general, particularly Mahler, the sound is nothing short of phenomenal. BUT why could not these engineers do the same for "Orfeo" selections? There's a lot of noise on these. On all the selection Ferrier's exceptionally dark mezzo (or contralto with a huge upper register) shines brilliantly. Of course, Mahler's songs bemoaning the death of children are not an easy listen by any means. But the melodies are amazingly harmonious and Bruno Walter's superb orchestra provides ideal background for them, with Ferrier's voice blending gorgeously with strings. Only Mussorgsky could take a subject such as this and make it so breathtakingly captivating. It's actually frightening in by itself. Gerald Moore (well-known for his collaboration with Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau) accompanies expertly on Purcell and Mendelsohn's selections.
It would be a treat to hear Ferrier in more alto repertoire; I am just not sure how many were commercially available at the time. Right now, Vivica Genaux is the leading artist in this area, but it would be fascinating to compare these two.
For the sheer vocal marvel experience, do not delay in getting this CD.
A Terrible Beauty.......2002-11-14
Nothing will change my opinion that Mahler should be approached with caution. Like Wagner, the scale and power of his work means that it is simply not for everyone, but inspite of that, this recording is an indespensible part of any serious music lover's collection. Music like this simply is not made any more, but rather this is a glimpse into a past where artists and not accountants ran the music industry.
Mahler's wife Alma bitterly opposed his setting of Ruckert's Kindertotenlieder to music and considering the death of their daughter soon after, it's doubtful if she ever forgave him for it. But the finished work has an indescribable beauty that Kathleen Ferrier and Mahler's protégé Bruno Walter give full expression to in away that no other interpreter's have even approached. More than 50 years on this is both a lasting tribute to the artists involved and an indictment of the decline in standards since.
What is to say - It's Ferrier..........2002-03-31
I bought the CD for the Kindertotenlieder and that's what I am going to write about (though the rest of the program is equally impressive). Ferrier's Mahler interpretations are always in the 5+ star area. When Walter is accompanying her the results are even better (unlike the case of Klemperer). The first song - Nun Will Die Sonn'... the darkness of the music is so prominent, it's breathtaking. All the rest Kindertotenlieder come in the same fashion. If interested in a release with better sound but not these Olympian contritutors, Janet Baker and Christa Ludwig have made some very good discs
How can you go wrong?.......2001-10-22
I said it before, in my review of the Ferrier/Walter performance of Das Lied von der Erde, recently rereleased by Decca; Ferrier is the authoritative interpreter of Mahler songs--and I have never heard anything to equal this performance of Kindertotenlieder.

Customer Reviews:
A century of British art songs to delight those who love them.......2006-06-26
These 53 songs have been collected by Naxos from their extensive acquisitions from Collins Classics, and perhaps other British sources now out of business. There's a steady cottage industry, year after year, producing the typical English art song, which is usually based on folk songs, but even in more modern idioms is profuondly conservative and nostaligic. Half these songs, not to mention half the composers, are totally unknown to American audiences, but the familiar names of Vaughan Williams and Britten represent high quality, and the lesser lights, such as Warlock and Quilter, are mainstays in this repertoire.
I'd challenge all but the most addicted listener to make it through more than ten songs at a sitting, and many of these pieces are tepid, offering comfort rather than inspiration. The singers are among the best, but Graham Johnson and Steuart Beford, who do most of the accompaniments, are lackluster. I know that won't be a popular comment, yet if you compare any of these songs with rendiitons done by Janet Baker, John Shirley-quirk, and most recently Bryn Terfel and Ian Bostridge, you immediately notice how much more intensity and drama is pesent than htis colleciton reveals.
