Oscillating between dancehall, disco, drum 'n' bass, and downtempo, Groove Armada consistently includes something from each style on their discs, and Soundboy Rock is no exception. The CD's kickoff single "Get Down" definitely falls into the dancehall category, bringing with it a rapid-fire Jamaica-meets-Trinidad carnival vibe that will excite some, but might turn off those who prefer their less frenetically paced tracks. Rest assured that Soundboy Rock is filled with lush numbers as well, most notably "What's Your Version" featuring underappreciated alt-folk vocalist Jeb Loy Nicols. The disco quotient is achieved with the inclusion of '70s dance queen Candi Staton's vocals on the retro dance number "Love Sweet Sound." As is often the case with Groove Armada, there is one absolute standout track that showcases the duo's ability to create timeless dance radio classics (a la "I See You Baby" from 2000's Vertigo.) In this case, "Song 4 Mutya," featuring up-and-coming dance pop charmer Mutya Buena, is about as endorphin-creating as a great pop song can get, garnering that feat by seamlessly mixing new wave with soul and pop. Soul music fans take note: The limited edition version of Soundboy Rock contains Angie Stone's vocals on the bonus track "Feel The Same As You." --Denise Sheppard

    Album Description

Limited edition version of their 2007 album includes two bonus tracks, 'Feel the Same' (Feat. Angie Stone) and 'Hands Up' (Feat. Mistah Fab). `Soundboy Rock' is the hotly anticipated new album from Groove Armada, one of the most consistently successful dance acts of recent years. In their ten year career so far the band have sold over 2 million albums worldwide but are also internationally acclaimed DJs (they have a regular residency at Space in Ibiza) and increasingly well known through their hugely successful Lovebox Weekender Festival (40k tickets sold last year) which they founded and curate. In typical Groove Armada eclectic style, the album features a whole range of collaborators including Candi Staton, Angie Stone, Simian Mobile Disco and Mutya from Sugababes on the gorgeous `Song 4 Mutya' single (`a sure fire summer anthem' according to Metro) and is already being hailed by many as the bands best album to date 17 tracks in all. Sony/BMG.

    5 out of 5 stars !!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-06-28

i cant even begin to explain kosheen's style to anyone. It's something you just have to hear for yourself. Sian's vocals are awesome. She has the kind of voice that when you hear her sing, you actually hear the words. The lyrics just grab you. This album is excellent and picks up where the excellent, Resist , left off. Their second album, kokopelli, was a bit of a let down for me. but this album takes elements from their debut, resist , and the better moments of kokopelli, and a masterpeice was created.

"damage" is , hands down, one of, if not, the best Kosheen songs ever released. It starts the album off with a bang. also worth mentioning are "chances" wich reminds me of "catch", "Guilty" and "under "fire"

It's moody, sometimes poppy, melodic, electronic music with big female vocals and deep lyrics.

    5 out of 5 stars deep beats, soul-filled vocals.......2007-05-19

On Kosheen's third release thick beats are once again coupled with amazing vocals. I first discovered this group at Coachella in 2004. Lead singer, Sian evokes thoughts of a love child by the likes of Grace Slick and Kate Bush. This collection of tracks is pretty down tempo. The feeling swells over the computer generated chaos. If you like the later Everything but the Girl or Miss Kitten you'll dig. My personal favorite track is "like a book." Also, check out Kosheen's first release "Resist."

5 out of 5 stars Three is just as good..........2007-05-08

I got turned onto Kosheen years ago through an internet radio station that played "Catch" from Kosheen's first album "Resist." With the song stuck in my head, and an import CD later, I placed them in the tops of my favorite groups. With their second album, I figured they couldn't do it twice. I was happily, wrong.

Can Kosheen be as good the third time? Yep. As awe-inspiring as ever.

Kosheen is a hard group to explain. Are they Rock? Techno? Dance? Pop? All of the above wrapped in a perfect blanket of balance and singing glee? One song may be a "meme-pop," then next a smooth lyrical flow folowed by a bit of hard rocking fun. But, every song is something to groove to - something that makes you move.

Anyone that likes their previous albums, you won't be disapointed. Much like me, you'll be singing "Guilty" at the top of your lungs in no time. For those that have never heard of Kosheen? Give them a try. You might surprise yourself and find a wonderful gem.

5 out of 5 stars Dope Relaxed and Chilled Beats.......2007-04-06

I have liked Kosheen since thier 1st album, they are very talented Artists. This CD reminds me at times of Everything but the Girl. The beats are very well done and the lead singer has a beautiful Voice (check out Chances) This is one of few CDs i'd actually purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Served up cool by the beach!.......2007-01-05

Volume #4 was my first introduction to the Cafe Del Mar series. While I've gradually acquired other titles in this line I have to say that Its the one that best soothes my frayed and tired nerves at the end of the day. Some tunes will literally have you crying out, "Take me away"!.... Ahhhhh... A nice cafe by the beach with some cold ones to sip while feeling the breeze and enjoying a glorious sunset. That in a nutshell keeps me coming back to this release.

5 out of 5 stars Again, this is the best of the collection.......2005-10-06

I normally wouldn't submit a review just to say "I totally agree with everything that he just said". Except in this case. I really enjoy the Cafe Del Mar collection even though many complain that the series is overproduced, too commercial, and generally not the best chill. This is not the time to seek to debunk those reviews. I just finished my collection of volumes 1-9 and wholeheartedly agree that this is the best of all. Volumes 1-2 have some good tracks, but the track flow lacks continuity in tempo and vibe. Volume 3 is closer but it is only in Volume 4 that Jose Padilla gets the full-on chill groove perfectly. Later cds are hit or miss (Volume 9 is back on track!). My two cents.

5 out of 5 stars The Best in the entire collection.......2004-12-17

Cafe Del Mar 4 (Volumen Cuatro) is by far my favorite. I have all the volumes to date, from 1 to 11, but was missing Volume 4, which I just picked up. I LOVE this CD!! Don't get me wrong, all the other Cafe Del Mar volumes are fair to good, with maybe 1 or 2 or 3 very good tracks on each of them. Despite these gems, most of the newer volumes (especially from Vol. 9 onward) tend to sound monotous--you know, the same beat, the same rhythm, the same "sound". But in Volume 4, every song has something new, different, and exciting to offer--and I just can't say that that is true with the other volumes. Volume 4 is the best ecclectic fusion of electronica, jazz, midtempo, and lounge of the bunch. Very cosmo!

5 out of 5 stars A Pearl of the Collection.......2004-09-29

'Cafe Del Mar 4' is one of the most melodic additions to the wonderful series which has come to dominate and perhaps even define the downtempo movement in modern popular music culture. This particular compilation combines a varied range of jazz-symphonic excellence with some edgier rhythms, most suitably espoused by Wasis Diop's No Sant featuring vocals by Lena Fiagbe. The breathtaking and jazzy culmination of this album is Stan Getz's Street Tattoo. The deft blending of natural sounds, such as crickets in the wild and a child's voice in Grillos by Paco Fernandes is simply inspired. Opening the album is the sensuous track Que Bonito by Jose Padilla, a electronic fusion of cymbalon, Spanish guitar, xylophone and bells in an altogether more uptempo arrangement. The energy of this track ordinarily would rule it out of the donwtempo genre, but juxtaposed with Talvin Singh's remix of John Martyn's Sunshines Better, it is a welcome compliment and in fact emphasizes the eclectic nature of this superlative member of the Café Del Mar family.

2 out of 5 stars Not the best CD of all the volumes.......2003-08-01

Well, this volume of Cafe Del Mar is pretty bad, the only good songs are:
    Jose Padilla - Que Bonito
    John Martyn - Sunshines Better
    Chicane - Offshore (Ambient Mix)
Karen Ramirez - Troubled Girl (Spanish Version)
If you can only afford one CD, I will recommend "Cafe Del Mar Volume 9 or Volume 8", but not this one.

5 out of 5 stars If you can get this instead of Anything, do it!.......2007-01-12

Martina Topley-Bird, of Maxinquaye fame, has really shown in this album that she is an excellent artist even without Tricky. If you are a fan of Tricky you will probably enjoy hearing her voice again, but this album is not really all that similiar to Tricky's work. It is alot more soulful and less electronic than Tricky, and has a very raw feel to it.
For those of you who don't know, this is the original UK release, which has the original production as well as 3 tracks which are not included in the American release "Anything". I have not heard Anything all the way through, but it seems like this is indeed a better album. If you can't grab this album Anything is okay, but I suggest Quixotic over it.

5 out of 5 stars Quixotic: breathtaking, wonderful. (Don't buy "Anything"!).......2005-03-23

If you absolutely cannot find Quixotic (it's available here on Amazon as an import; even if it's pricier you'll be glad you paid the extra)then you should buy Anything, it's better than nothing. (No pun intended).

But really, just buy Quixotic. It has three songs that Anything doesn't, among which are the haunting, beautiful "Stevie's (Days of a Gun" which took a while to grow on me but really layer vocals, strings, and remixing in an amazing, unprecented way. And it has "Lying" which is also vocally haunting and one of the more lyrically interesting songs on the album. It also has "I Wanna Be There" which isn't as enjoyable in my opinion but it definitely shows off one of Martina's greatest strengths: her ability to pair trip-hop, rock, soul, and something else entirely, and end up with something much much greater than the sum of its parts.

Also, for reasons that make no sense to me, the Anything version of "Soul Food" is different and inferior to the Quixotic version - the vocals are re-recorded and flatter, and other stuff is missing. (I don't have both albums with me to compare, but I remember being struck by how some of what makes Soul Food so wonderful was somehow gone on the Anything version.)

So yeah, just buy Quixotic already.

Of course, most albums have what makes both so amazing. This music is beautiful, complex, eerie in parts, rich, melodic. It's also incredibly complex musically, and it's one of those albums that is challenging and has something to teach musicians and music afficionados, while still being utterly accessible and fun to listen to.

Some songs (Soul Food, Lullaby, Anything for example) are perfect for a romantic evening; Ilya's music makes me think of a good song to play at a hipster art gallery opening, and its lyrics are good for the bitter aftermath of a failed relationship ("Thought i was in love/tell me was i wrong/You know we were wrong together"). The string section of Ilya alone almost makes the whole damn album worth it: I want someone to write an entire string piece based on those few seconds.

Her lyrics might be said to be the one weakness; it's not that they are bad or awkward in any way. In fact, there are plenty of gems:
"Seven states away they're doin', doin'
    the Strange Fruit swing
    when they come down
you have to leave town" ("Too Tough to Die")
    or
"I went down to the house in your girlfriend's clothes
They fit me better than I would have supposed"
    (Lying)

It's just that for someone who so beautifully does things never before achieved in music, I would have thought her lyrics would do the same; instead they can be somewhat .... conventional.
("I don't want anything but you/I don't need anything but you" from "Anything"; plus "Soul Food"'s lyrics are relatively tame for such a seductive, marvelous song.) It's a minor quibble, really, in an overall wonderful album.

So yes, buy this; if you're me, it'll actually take you a minute to warm to it (I didn't like it at first, to be honest, but then i couldn't find most of my CDs and so had to listen to this one; I was hooked.) Others will immediately love it.

My Discman has already given it one of the Top 5 Most played CDs of 2004, and it'll be a top contender for that prize in 2005 too.

Plus, being a Martina Topley-Bird fan will impress all your music snob friends. Admit it, that's a pull. But you get the greatest benefit: This kick-ass album.

5 out of 5 stars A vocal ride with a great arsenal of songs to match..........2004-12-25

One of the recent great albums to have escaped many people's radars "Quixotic" is a trppy and spacey ride musicwise and vocalwise. Martina Topley Bird has put her signature voice on many of the early triphop era albums (those of Tricky), and even though many people will recognise the voice instantly they'll have difficulty placing it somewhere.

The album starts off with one of the most uplifting rock songs i've heard recently and that itself is a surprise start for her repertoire. This is then followed by more expected electronica tunes, smooth silk cuts adorned by Topley's soothing voice, and even a couple of gorgeous soul songs (that would put most of modern soul "divas" to utter shame).

I can safely say here that this is one the most diverse albums i've heard in the past 2-3 years. Topley sounds like she's showing off her stunning vocal talent but the thing is she sounds so convincing in each and every song she delivers that you know she's feeling each single note she sings.

Obviously this LP has gone unheralded and undiscovered which is a real shame then when other way less talented vocalists are busking in undeserved fame. Topley is a massively gifted singer with a very characteristic voice, one you immediately fall for upon the very first listen.

In a time where female vocals seem to be very trendy it's prudent to discover the real gems out there and spare yourself the garbage promoted by the hype machine.

As a closing note, don't go for the US version of this album which comes with 3 songs less and there's absolutely no reason to:
    a. get mysteriously ripped off like that
    b. miss out on any song of this album as they are all more than worthy...

5 out of 5 stars You really need this one.......2004-02-03

Undoubtedly magnificent and absolutely radiant. Quixotic speaks to the soul, resonating deep within you. it provides a journey of truely heart felt lyrics, elegance combined with a laid back trip-hop sound, subtle sultry soul, with a certain rock punch. Martina Topley Bird captivates her listeners with a voice that engrossers, her sensual innocence takes a hold of you and leaves you wanting more. Yes, her voice that you've heard sooo much about, words and descriptions really can't do it any justice, just trust us and listen to her for yourself. personal favourites: cruisey Soulfood that showcases her luxuriously smokey vocals, a slightly more charging and rocky Too Tough To Die, I absolutely love Lying, possibly my absolute favourite on the album, theres an effortless beauty that leaves a smile on my face and the deep full sounding llya. Quixotic is nothing but a beautiful offering from Martina Topley Bird. It hits you just where a perfect cd is suppose to. What i love is that Martina is humble and delicate while a power and strength is still behind her.

    5 out of 5 stars Brilliant........2003-11-28

The haunting songtress of Tricky's albums: Maxinquaye, Nearly God, Pre-Millenium, Angels With Dirty Faces and Ruff Guide finally steps out on her own. This album as highly anticipated by Tricky fanatics worldwide (including myself), and this album was very very satisfying. The tracks vary from chillout trip hop, to jazzy soul, to 'almost' rock, and she does not disappoint her fans. Certainly an album to have on your shelf. Independiente should make a US album, because Martina does have (new) fans here!

5 out of 5 stars They are our past..........2003-05-23

...and maybe, maybe they are our future. I have been listening to new age music since I was in the 5th grade but this was mostly the first one I ever listened to. I remember hearing a few songs my dad played when I was very young. But this was the first one that I bought. Deep Forest is the name used by french keyboardists Eric Mouquet and Michael Sanchez but they don't just use keyboards they also use afican vocals. It is an excellent combination and so far the best one that I have heard from world music.

In my opinion, every song is worth listening to. My favorites on the album are: Sweet Lullaby[ambient mix], Night Bird, Desert Walk, White Whisper and The Second Twilight. The extra features on the album are different mixes from Sweet Lullaby, Deep Forest and Forest Hymn. This is just like a special edition of the original album called Deep Forest which as I know it now is out of print. But I am glad that I was able to get a copy of this one.

I would recommend this album to anyone who likes tribal rythems with new age music. I loved the album and I hope you do to.

    5 out of 5 stars 6 starz.......2003-05-10

I'm a fan of Deep Forest. I love it. Deep Forest (along with Enigma) is #1 new release I am watching for in stores and/or on Amazon.com and as soon it comes out I buy it. Along with Deep Forest I also love Enigma, Amethystium and few others. Deep Forest is one of the best New Age "artists". I recommend all Deep Forest CDs to every New Age music fan and not only.
Wonderful and exotic music for your ear and soul!

3 out of 5 stars Wacky, wacky group!.......2002-09-20

Wild, Wild World Mix Music. What is "World Mix Music"? Can't really explain it. All I know is that I heard one song and bought the album. The pygmie yodeling song got to me. (I actually heard it in my sleep!)

Listened to it so much, I can't anymore. It's different, if you like that sort of thing.

    5 out of 5 stars A PIECE OF EDEN.......2002-03-29

Like in the Bible, this CD is a trip inside a forest, where the past, represented by primitive people, could be felt like a return to the beginning of Genesis, where world was just a Sweet lullaby during the firsts twilights, and humans and trees, animals and even the wind sung togheter. It is also a description of a wanted future. Best Songs: Sweet Lullaby, Sunrise at Alcatraz, Forest Hymn

5 out of 5 stars Fourth and foremost.......2007-07-03

It was mostly out of a sense of loyalty and nostalgia that I bought Statues. I'd felt Moloko's third album release, Things To Make And Do, was a shambolic introduction to the band for new listeners lured by dancefloor smashes Sing It Back and The Time Is Now.

Well, what a pleasant surprise, because what turned out to be their swansong may have become my favourite CD ever. The duo didn't just retread the past glories of kook classics Do You Like My Tight Sweater? and I Am Not A Doctor, but overshot them with a maturity which only bolstered their legendary status.

Roisin Murphy's voice is better here than ever. A friend of mine who dropped by when I was playing it said, "Alanis Morissette on weed", and while you can see what he means, the lyrical approach, while no less intelligent, has a charming idiosyncracy that's so far from the North American sensibility as to make comparisons pretty unhelpful.

And Mark Brydon's always inventive arrangements benefit from a more orchestral sweep than previously. When this is fused with electronica, as in the opener, Familiar Feeling (the version here having a two-minute, staccato intro that's pure anxiety) and I Want You, the effect is pure synesthesia - greater than the sum of its parts. Mind you, the strings on this album would make it worth a punt on their own.

Bouncy slices of dance-pop like 100% and Cannot Contain This helped maintain Moloko's undoubted club appeal, but it's the lyrics that'll have you poring over the insert. They've always been leftfield, to say the least, but these "Party Weirdos" can take on subjects such as obsession, lost love and disappointment as well as any torch balladeer - all with Roisin's brittle, delicately-phrased vocals wrapped deliciously around them.

It's one of those rare albums when you'll have a new favourite track every day. Today, that's The Only Ones (track 8).

Even the melodrama of the final track, Over And Over, at nigh-on ten minutes, manages to feel self-indulgent for the listener, rather than the musicians. Indulge yourself - you might not get as much wear out of a CD for quite a while.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, but be warned..........2006-02-10

I hope this review helps someone who has not decided whether to buy this or not. I came upon Moloko very very recently, because their song "Cannot Contain This" was on Desyn Masiello's compilation. I was absolutely blown away by the song. So I bought this (well, actually a friend gave it to me)and at first I have to accept that it was not what I expected, because what I heard on that compilation has nothing to do with the original track. So if you buy this expecting dance music, you will be disappointed (I understand that Moloko's tracks have been on many dj compilations).

This album mixes different music styles from jazz to electronic and of course, Roisin's voice is amazing to say the least...this music creates a mood that will remind you of something, though you may not know what that something is. Definitely for listening and enjoying, kind of introspective. In my opinion best track: "Forever More". Music and lyrics amazing.

    5 out of 5 stars Brilliant album.......2005-09-25

I tend to play the tracks over and over.:)I can't help but sing along. Roisin Murphy has come a loooooong way.

5 out of 5 stars In the classic style of..........2005-06-13

...this band. Moloko have branded a quirky style of modern pop-rock which is infectious, melodic, delivered with Roisin Murphy's delicious and endlessly plyable voice and entirely their own genre.
The beautiful irony of the band is that their quirky, indefinable style is definable by it's quirkiness, but at least no one else can quite muster the style with the belivable ellegance of they. This album is characteristicly, beautiful and bonkers and a joyous daliance with funky eccentricity. Bliss.

4 out of 5 stars I cant erase the smile on my face.......2005-02-03

I just get this awesome cd as a gift from one cousin of mine and im so happy , Moloko delivers in "statues" deligthfull soul and acid jazz that they have been offering in past productions but now they use electronic beats, sinthetizers , and a few artificial but delicious rithm sections, also the sound of Moloko is so british and therefore it has a natural charm very enjoyable for just a few eclectic audiences, check out "statues" only import edition is available and for this reason is a expense adquisition but it worths cent by cent , or pound by pound, should i say

Have you ever attended an amazing party where everyone seemed to be in spanking dancing form, dressed to the nines and celebrating nothing in particular? Ever wanted to bottle that feeling and be able to release it at will without violating federal laws? Buy this album. Really, its like standing in the middle of a great party on a warm night, waist deep in the swimming pool surrounded by friendly people. Can a CD really do this for you? Not really, but this gives it a really good bash. Good quality dance music for cheeky people who don't take themselves too seriously.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best "U2" singles ever.......2003-03-28

People either seem to think this is the best U2 song ever or hate it as a U2 song, even though it really isn't U2 to begin with. However, this single is a lot more U2 than the album itself is, so I thought I'd comment anyway.

Starting with Miss Sarajevo, this song is fantastic even if it is not typical U2. As has been mentioned the combination of Pavarotti and U2 is a match made in heaven. I have always been amazed in how well Bono's voice and the group complement other vocalists, and this is no exception. The only drawback on this particular disc is that Pavarotti's part is cut short in this slightly edited version (as compared to the full album).

The jewel of this disc though is not the single itself but the live version of One. Here we are treated to One in an elegant vocal style that is far superior to the original album version. The audience singing along actually complements the song rather than detract as is often the case in live recordings. The biggest plus here is the full orchestral accompanyment and the addition of Brian Eno singing along. The final product is a recording of One that is full of texture and elevates the song to a level worthy of its greatness.

Bottoms: This is actually an instrumental remix of Zoo Station that I find fantastic. I am not normally a fan of remixes, but this is tasteful and done in the spirit of the whole Passengers project, though it is still a bit dancy. I find it fun to "sing" along to this mix, and you will find the tempo is actually a bit faster and more upbeat in a subtle way.

Viva Davidoff: This is the only track that does not have a hint of U2. It is really weird. Even weirder than the weirdest stuff on the Passengers album. I find this one track impossible to listen to almost. It is more abstract than ambiant, and it seems like it is a bit much even if for an Eno song. Yet, the first three tracks more than make up for this one, and I still give the single 5 starts. It is definitely better than most U2 singles since.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best ever.......2002-03-21

Although I usually only listen to the first two tracks, this is probably the best U2 investment I ever made. I agree with all of the others who said that the live version of "One" on this record is phenominal and the duet with Pavoratti is haunting but brilliant. If you love U2 and want something truely rare then do yourself a favor and pick this up.

    5 out of 5 stars Amazing all-time favorite.......2000-10-27

I heard a cut on the radio a few years ago, and went to considerable effort to find out WHO did this incredible piece. I knew it was U2, but didn't know it wasn't done under their "label."

Of my 400+ CDs (doesn't include the 700+ LPs), this could just be my all-time favorite. It is ALWAYS played at maximum volume; I just can't help it!

Luciano Pavarotti is amazing as only he can be, but the COMBINATION of his incredible voice, the intensity of the music of U2, and the way they work together is something that truly deserves the word AWESOME. It gives me chills every time I hear it.

I was surprised to find it here on Amazon, after having such a hard time tracking it down before!

Hm. Guess I need to go hear it yet again!

5 out of 5 stars war child ..........2000-07-31

I will be honest with you. When I first heard "Miss Sarajevo" I wasn't really impressed. It's not really a U2 song at all. The lyrics sound as if they were written in a short amount of time, which I wouldn't be surprised (Passengers was made in about 6 months). BUT, after I heard the live version at Sarajevo. I was totally blown away. If anyone has ever heard the Sarajevo POPmart it is undoubtingly the most emotional concert of the Popmart tour. The live version of "One" has to be the best I've ever heard. It was recorded at WarChild with just Bono, Edge, and Eno with a full orchastra behind 'em. Probably one of Bono's best vocal performances. The 2 unreleased Passenger tracks "Bottoms" and "Viva Davidoff" have Eno written all over them. Not so sure about "Bottoms" (just an instrumental remix of Zoo Station) but "Viva Davidoff" is very pretty and atmostpheric. I know whoever buys this, it will probably just be for the live version of "One", but make no mistake about it. This single is a beautiful piece of work.

Porcelain, taken from both Moby's album Play and The Beach OST. Porcelain is a great track for the summer, it even has a tropical feel to it, or is that because its played in the Beach :o) Whatever Moby creates now seems to get taken and put to the big screen or TV commercial and why not they are all excellent and porcelain is no exception.

5 out of 5 stars Pure beauty !.......2000-07-01

"Porcelain" is a beautiful song ; so calm and soothing. This is song is nothing but pure beauty. The two b-sides are ( just like "The Whispering Wind" ) great. "Flying Over The Dateline" can't seem te decide wether it should be a techno, trip hop or ambient song, and that's what makes it so nice. "Summer" is a nice, calm track with a piano. Really nice stuff to relax. Buy it.
