Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

great starter disc for vocal house neophytes.......2005-02-11

everyone knows "unspeakable joy", but there are other great cuts as well. the Anita Baker Cover, "Been So Long", is a nice downtempo tarck, but "Learn To Love Yourself" is THE song to listen to whan you get this disc. A great disc for those who want to dip their toes in the "vocal, I ain't leaving the club till Sunday morning" house crowd

OK Urban Music.......2002-10-25

R&B vocalist Kim English is adept at all the appropriate clichés for stardom, including the politically correct posturing, the obligatory boogying, a little scatting and the moody instrumental bits. I imagine she will be popular with fans of `urban' music (think TLC). Not Really my thing.

Classic house gem !.......2000-07-18

I picked this CD up on a trip to NYC over a year ago, now it is rocking my world. I mistakenly thought it included the track "I Know A Place". I was so disappointed when I got home and realized it didn't have that track, I didn't bother to open it. Shame on me, because this is an excellent CD. English is one of a precious few album artists (Byron Stingily and Ultra Nate are the others) who is faithful to the house sound. Unlike many singers in the dance genre, English is not the stereotypical, attitudinal "screaming" house diva.

I am probably in the minority on this one but I prefer the Maurice Joshua-produced, album version of "Unspeakable Joy" to the techno-pop version played on radio and in clubs. That song is just one of many treasures on this CD. The Mood II Swing-produced "Learn To Love" is also a standout. Todd Edwards gives a classic, disco-y vibe to "Tomorrow". And Masters At Work "work" their magic on "Nite Life" one of the best remixes they have cranked out in a little while. The only curious inclusion is her remake of Anita Baker's "Been So Long". English has a great voice and she does the song justice but it sounds too much like Baker's version.

Dance music tends to be very producer-driven, and there are some heavyweights on this CD. However, the true star is Kim English. Not only is the diva front and center but she wrote or co-wrote four of the tracks. Clearly, English set the overall tone for the CD as well, each song has an uplifting, empowering message. And of course, she sings the hell out of every last note!

This collection has recently been remixed and repackaged as "Re-energized" which is also worth checking out. If you like that one, then you MUST give "Higher Things" a try.

Good Concept Needs Better Producers.......1999-09-28

I am a big fan of house music and I agree this is a great LP...but under the circumstances..none of the original mixes ever make it to the Dance floors of the US......The majority of the music you hear in a club is a remix that may or may not ever be released to the market as a shelf item..you normally have to search and search..if you are as big a fan of house music as me then you will know what I am saying when I state "Razor and Guido did an excellent job with Unspeakable Joy and should do more work with Kim English"...her music would do so much better with a hard house edge....the garage house sound is gone..and unfourtunately doesnt look like it is going to make a big return anytime soon..bottom line..Good LP but If I were a customer I would hold out for the singles...

Spritually Uplifting Dance Music at It's BEST!.......1999-09-08

This CD is great, NO DOUBT! Many of the best DJ/Producers in dance have joined forces with "the voice". Kim English will appeal to dance music lovers who also live for a positive message. "Learn to Love", "Supernatural", and the title song "Higher Things" are the cuts! BUY IT!

Kim English vs. Thunderpuss.......2002-03-09

This is, hands down, one of the best and most electrifying remixes by Thunderpuss (Chris Cox and Barry Harris). These guys give Kim's low-key disco jam an infectious, energetic thrust; from the word "go" the groove never lets up. Deleriously catchy and frothy, this remix is sure to light up any dancefloor.

Focus on the higher things.......2000-10-09

Who else but Thunderpuss2000 can remix the hell out of this song? They have done it again with their blasting tribal beats and synths to produce an 11 minute pulsating club mix. It can be compared similar to the style they did for Abigal's 'if it don't fit'. Bravo!

Not Thunderpuss' best work..........2000-10-08

I was eagerly awaiting this CD...unfortunately, it disappoints. The Thunderpuss mixes are OK...and that's about it. Being a big fan of their work (even if some accuse it of being formulaic), their style certainly does make for some highly danceable grooves. This one is not one of them. Kim English has some good vocals, but the track could have used a harder edge, rather than their usual, "softer" synth style. Oh well...can't hit a home run every time...
