With their roots firmly planted in jazz, the electronica duo of Eighty Mile Beach--Beth Custer and Christian Jones--isn't afraid of a little experimentation. Thus, Inclement Weather--the group's genre-melding debut--doesn't discriminate in its influences. Custer's vocals remind one of Suzanne Vega, while backing instrumentation ranges from funky acid jazz to hip-hop breaks. Some of the Bay Area's best jazz artists help the pair out (guitarist Will Bernard, saxophonist Ralph Carney, and didgeridooist Stephen Kent), and the results are surprisingly effective. Aside from the occasional clichéd lyric (which acid-jazz song doesn't have these?), there's a lot going on here. At its best moments, the album's minimalist tracks, such as "Sparse Moments Sublime" and "That Modest Prize," are largely reminiscent of Dos, the classic dueling-bass jazz-rock duo of Mike Watt and wife Kira Roessler. --Jason Verlinde
Inclement Weather,Eighty Mile Beach,Om Records,Pop,Popular Music,Rock,Rock/Pop,This release melds grooves ambient to hip-hop with understated vocals and atmospheric samples and clarinets. Critically acclaimed and very hard to find, this is a fine addition to any trip-hop collection.

Very listenable.......2002-07-02
I discovered it on an eclectic Internet radio station and ordered it on the strength of one track. I wasn't disappointed. I've listened to my copy more times and I can count and still enjoy the quirky, innovative music. I almost bought a diggerydoo because of it.
worthless.......1999-04-20
Profoundly worthless. Couldn't get any cd stores to buy it back.. Save yourself the time and buy the real thing like Portishead or Baxter
My pick for #1 record of 1998........1998-12-03
Eighty Mile Beach's "Inclement Weather" is the perfect mix of all things eclectic, and I can't think of a 1998 release that pleased and moved me more than this one. Beth Custer is one of the most innovative artists making music today (check out her solo album, "The Shirt I Slept In"). This is a listening treat for all occasions.
"experimental folk-jazz"?.......1998-09-27
I don't really know how to decribe this one, but I like it. There are times when some of the tracks seem like noodly filler, but others are a soothing chill out blend of female vocals, synthy keyboards and percussion, and clarinet. I fully expect great(er) things from this duo in the future...

A truly great work of art. The Inclement Weather Bus album will be taking the younger rock and roll generation to the millenium. It has a fresh sound with a diverse group of talented musicians, who keep the spirit of rock alive and true. I recommend this album to anyone who claims that their spirit of music is true.

I just want to say that I am proud to know one of the members of this amazing band! He is the one and only Damien Musto! He's a charming, sweet guy, with a great sense of humor! =) I truly loved listening to this album. Great lyrics and music! Everyone in this band is extremely talented! I look forward to hearing your future albums. Congratulations!
