"New Maps of Hell" - Bad Religion.......2007-07-13

"New Maps of Hell" proved to be a very unexpected turn for Bad Religion. If you listen to "Process of Belief" and then "The Empire Strikes First" you will notice that Bad Religion seemed to be going in the direction of straight melodic rock with only a seasoning of punk influence. This album, on the other hand, sounds like a straight punk album with only a few songs ("Honest Goodbye" and "Lost Pilgrim" to name two) falling into the category in which Bad Religion was starting to wedge itself.
That being said, this album is an astonishing achievement from an already well established and respected punk rock band. I haven't heard this type of energy from this band since the album "Generator" and I have to say that the mix of old and new is quite refreshing.

New BR sounds almost like old BR.......2007-07-13

WOW! I bought this album the day it came out, and I was so surprised by the content. Starting with 52 Seconds, the buzz saw/distortion sound is in full effect! This new record is a step forward, and also back to the more uptempo sound BR used to have on all of it's songs. From Suffer until Stranger Than Fiction, most of their records were all fast and loud and we loved it that way. Then came The Gray Race, which was good, but started a trend towards more melodic songwriting. The Empire Strikes First was a step back in time, and a step in the right direction for the fans. Now we have New Maps of Hell, and you can TOTALLY tell that there are 3 guitarists all trying to outdo each other on this record. The term "wall of sound" is used well here. This record will definately please the long time BR fan, as well as create new ones around the world.

Another Solid Bad Religion Album..........2007-07-12

While not quite as inspired or adventurous as their last two albums The Process of Belief and The Empire Strikes First, New Maps of Hell is yet another worthy addition to the Bad Religion catalog. The sound is classic Bad Religion and is even reminiscient of some of their earlier harder edged albums like Against The Grain. Bad Religion fans will not be disappointed with this album. Songs like New Dark Ages and Honest Goodbye fit right in with the best that Bad Religion has ever released. The only complaint that I have is with the mix. It must be on purpose, but it just seems like this album was mixed much more dirty than any of their other recent releases. The vocals tend to get lost a bit. It's mostly a minor complaint. The album is still very good by any standards. It is great to see that after 27 years and 14 full length albums that Bad Religion still has something to say.

Music good, lyrics ok.......2007-07-12

I'm a huge, huge BR fan. I've now heard this album at least 10 times with headphones.

Musically, I have nothing bad to say. It [expletive] ROCKS. Great, great, GREAT music. But lyrically? There's plenty of catchy and clever little phrases, but none of the song lyrics really hold together well. I struggle to see the meaning, the point to most of them.

Greg Graffin is a preeminent poet/lyricist. But he sure doesn't show it on this release. Like I said, there's plenty of lines or pairs of lines that sound great, but none of the songs really seem to clearly make a point like so many older Bad Religion songs do.

Musically, it's 5 stars. Lyrically it's only 3 (hence my 4-star rating), because it pales in comparison with the lyrics on albums like Generator, No Substance, and even later work like Process of Belief. Still, it's not nearly as bad as the New America! Greg, I *know* you can write better stuff than this. I was just listening (again) to No Substance the other day and continue to be seriously impressed with the lyrics and everything else about that album. I can only hope that someday they reach that height again with both the music AND the lyrics.

I love you guys but..........2007-07-12

Disappointed, but not enough to give up on them. This album is the worst (musically) compared to the previous ones. Of course it's a matter of taste but the songs are mediocre and the overall sound quality is BAD. The instruments are much louder than the voice track, specially in the first song (maybe it was on purpose).
One of the things I love from BR is the way they mix angry punk with melody, even in hardcore albums like TESF, but this one has none of that. If you only like fast noisy punk, 'New Maps Of Hell' is for you. I just don't think this album was worth 3 years waiting. If I have to choose one song, I'll go for 'Lost Pilgrim'.
Even though the bad review I still think Bad Religion is the best punk-rock band ever.

Long ago in californialand, i heard the last everly brothers "hit", on the wings of a nightingale, 1 time and i knew I HAD to have it. Took me about 20 years to find it, in this album. If you really like good music, with tight harmonies, good guitar work, words you can understand, a little bit of country and early rock to the still bitchin, fresh,updated sound of nightingale, then STOP RIGHT HERE and get this album. Enough said!

The Millennium collection seems to have the songs I always want from a group or artist. The quality of the sound is there everytime. As the local music stores disappear it is good to be able to trust a system like this as I replace much of my vinyl for a CD collection. This CD gives me what I want for the Everly Brothers in one purchase.

The Best.......2004-04-01

Any fan who appreciates the Everly Brothers has to have
this album. The remastered sound is superb of course, but
the deciding factor on this one should be the inclusion
of their last hit, after more than 20 years had passed since
their previous one.
After the team reunited, one of their biggest fans wrote
a song especially for them. Paul McCartney wrote "Wings of
a Nightingale" for them, and it is a truly beautiful song
that displays their harmony at its best, and the song is
not usually found on other collections.
Get the best of all their classic early hits, plus this
last hit.
A must have for any fan.

Great rhythms and melodies, but not the best lyrics........2007-05-19

Of course, I really don't care too much about lyrics, but "I don't want to fight, hey let's go fly a kite" is pretty corny. Still I love that song and the acoustic version and his message is nothing to laugh at. His voice is great too, so that makes up for the corny lyrics. The African influence in this CD is pretty evident, you can really hear some of that South African Mbaqanga sound in "Into the Groove" ziggy defintely knew what he was doing when we put the african sounds into this CD.. again I just wish his lyrics were as good as his dad's because this CD would go down as a modern reggae masterpiece if they were. It still doesn't fall very short.

What a treat!.......2007-02-28

Fair warning: this isn't exactly a well-informed review. This is CD is the first Ziggy Marley I've heard. I picked it up in a used music shop on a whim, and wow -- I'm so glad I did! While I can't yet compare this to Ziggy's other albums, I will definitely be picking up more of his music on the strength of this offering.

This is a fun, highly listenable album. There's a distinct reggae flavor, but strong blues and pop influences as well, smoothly integrated into a distinctive sound that's easy to love. This CD is a great mood-lifter -- it's just tough not to be upbeat while listening to this!

I've been following him/them since the first Melody Makers albums and they were better, sometimes backed by The Wailers, Stephens contributions, whatever.etc, His solo stuff is thin and he's being left behind which is a shame, he's surruonded by tallent. The fire and hunger are sorely lacking and withuot them can you make Reggae?

Keeping True Punk Alive.......2007-05-10

The first time i heard this album, I was very skeptical about what i was gonna expect from hearing that first track, only to be swept away on how it lead to the next song, "Sinister Rouge", I knew that from this point there wasn't going to be a song that would dissapoint me or make me ask myself what the hell is this. Bad Religion knows exactly what punkers want and thats to keep making music that we all remember from back in the Suffer, Generator days. I give this one 5 stars

Would you give it all up to live again?.......2007-03-17

Expectations were very high after The Process of Belief. The band had been in a bit of musical doldrums in the late 90's, and had shaken that off with a fast, melodic comeback record that is every bit as good as the reviews will have you believe.

The Empire Strikes First plays like an album by a band that is starting to settle into a new era. The songs are catchy yet abbrasive, the playing is tight and professional, and the vocals are as good as any other punk album you care to mention.

Some people may be a bit put off by things like rapper Sage Francis being highlighted in one song, or the Heartbreaker's Mike Campbell taking a solo in "Los Angeles is Burning," but with preconceptions aside, Empire achieves everything it intends to. Imagine how many people were playing "Let Them Eat War" when they pulled up to the polls to vote in 2004. A sense of hope, a message of unity, and an attitude of discontent go a long way to raising spirits.

It's time to turn the tides indeed.

Another Great Album By Bad Religion..........2007-02-23

This album continues the career resurgence for this band which began with The Process of Belief. Many had left them for dead after two straight disappointing releases in the late 90's (no substance, new america). However, BR came back with a vengeance with The Process of Belief. This album proves that Bad Religion has A LOT left in the tank. It has all of the fast paced, politically motivated anger that you'd expect from a Bad Religion. It also includes a few interesting changes of pace with songs like "Boot Stamping..." and "Beyond Electric Dreams". This is truly a welcome addition to the Bad Religion catalog and I'd reccomend it to anyone who loves good old fashioned punk rock!

They still got it.......2007-02-19

I'm no longer as ignorant about public policy and processes and the government as I was when I started listening to the likes of "Suffer" and "Against the Grain". Now I don't protest things or show support by voicing my opinions for all to hear or through public action like a pretentious prick, but now I do it by voting and posting crappy reviews. And I don't totally agree with Bad Religion like I used to, but, I gotta hand it to them, they definitely churned out another great album and I love the songs. "Beyond Electric Dreams", "Los Angeles is Burning", "Sinister Rouge", "God's Love" are all great. I say, you don't have to support the band view on the current issues and whatnot, but show the love for the band and their musical talent.

I see a contrast..........2006-11-22

A little background info: I only have four Bad Religion albums, those being: The Empire Strikes First, Against the Grain, Suffer, and The Process of Belief. Let's establish that this album is amazing!... but it's different. The style cannot be compared to the earlier Bad Religion, like Suffer and Against the Grain... both of which are great. This album is much more, well, musical! The pace slows down a little, the lyrics don't always come at you at lightning speed, but it's all in a good way. It seems to me like it's a new, more mature path for Bad Religion, and I hope they continue down it. Especially after The Process of Belief... which pretty much sucks. Don't buy it. Get this instead. It's a masterpiece.

This is one of the most beautiful, restorative collections of Celtic music I have ever heard. Haunting, sublime harp, cello, guitar, flute, and soundscapes create an atomosphere of serenity for meditation, prayer, or simply unwinding the mind and emotions. The poetry which originated each selection is included and provides a meditation in itself. Highly recommended.

The music included on the "Celtic Meditation Music" CD is so soothing & hauntingly beautiful to me that I've barely listened to anything else for the last week - it's that good!

The liner notes are great as well. They share information about the various rituals, prayers, and poems that are behind each of the songs - it's really quite interesting!

Overall, I would highly recommend this CD to anyone who enjoys the sounds of celtic music, as well as those who are looking for music to relax to - it's absolutely beautiful!

Gentle, contemplative Celtic instrumentals.......2006-10-01

Based on ancient Celtic prayers, the compositions featured on this album were conceived under the premise "If prayers were music, what would they sound like?" The gentle, familiar tunes, rendered on Minogue's sparkling Irish harp and accompanied by other acoustic and electronic instruments, are drawn from the traditional Celtic repertoire and the liner notes pair each song with the text of a prayer, either pagan/nature-based or Christian. This pairing of unrelated prayers with existing melodies is an interesting approach, especially considering that the tracks here are all instrumental, with none of the prayer words actually being spoken or sung. Minogue's earlier albums feature a lot of vocals, both hers and others', sometimes even done hymn-style in rich choral harmonies. So I'm not sure why the texts of the prayers couldn't have been incorporated somehow into this music. But nonetheless, "Celtic Meditation Music" is, like all of Aine Minogue's work that I'm familiar with, deftly orchestrated, supremely relaxing, and full of quiet beauty. This is good music for massage, resting, deep breathing, or just unwinding at the end of a long day. Then guest instrumentalists are cellist Eugene Friesen, whistle player Joanie Madden, clarinetist Tom Hill, string orchestrator Brad Hatfield, concertina player Brid Meany, guitarist Sheldon Mirowitz and electronic soundscape artist Randy Roos. For more Celtic-inspired instrumentals conducive to meditation, try Minogue's other works, and also the following: "Celtic Inspirations" by guitarist William Patterson, the Narada compilation albums "Celtic Treasure: The Legacy of Turlough O'Carolan" and "Celtic Treasure II: The Living Legacy of Turlough O'Carolan," and anything by Kim Robertson and Lisa Lynne, but particularly their early work.

Bad Religion, one of the last bands you'd expect to join the ranks of major-label rockers, makes the leap from its own Epitaph Records to Atlantic for its eighth album, Stranger Than Fiction. These guys totaly sold out when they singed to atlantic for this peace of junk. this album just screams sell out. Look we're played in the mall now. If you want good bad religion then get anything from how could hell be any worse up recipe for hate. I can make a better album then these sell outs can!!!

After a few listens it becomes better.......2006-08-09

Out of the 5 BR CDs I own (Process of Belief, Generator, No Control, Gray Race and Stranger than fiction) Id have to say this is the weakest of the 5. Not that thats a bad thing mind you, far from it infact. Its just this cd takes (well it did for me about 4 listens before I started to love it). The sound they portray on this cd is a very straightforward simplistic approach compared to say for example the process of belief. Its still an awesome cd but it lacks the intensity that I was hoping for. Some really good songs are included on this album such as Leave mine to me, Stranger than Fiction, Tiny Voices, The Handshake, Individual, Better off dead and Hooray for me. However there are a couple of weak tracks like Television feat Tim Armstrong of Rancid fame and the revision of the classic song: 21st Century Digital Boy. However look through all the subtle gripes Ive made and you'll find yourself ROCKING out to this after a few attempts. Just dont buy it and think that it is as intense as their other work. Hope this review helped even if it was only a little.

PUNK ROCK IS NOT DEAD... AND THIS PROVES IT!.......2006-05-06

1994 was a great year for punk rock. Green Day came out with Dookie, their first major label album... and Bad Religion gave the world Stranger Than Fiction.
Stranger Than Fiction was Bad Religion's first album on a major label, and was underappriecated by most old Bad Religion fans. But, no matter what they say, Stranger than Fiction is an awesome album.
THE BEST SONGS
Incomplete- classic Bad Religion. 'Mother, Father, look at your little monster. I'm a hero, I'm a zero.'
Stranger than Fiction- the song the album came from. Great, catchy, Bad Religion.
The Handshake- an intresting quick song. 'a handshake's nothing but a subtle f**k you.'
Slumber- you know you have an awesome band when they can take a slow song and make it one of the best in a great album. SLumber is a great song. Your Bad Religion collection isn't complete until you have this.

These are the best songs, but the album in genereal is wonderful. Any BAd Religion, heck, any punk rock fan needs this album.

Ok I understand this band is a classic in the punk scene, but it doesnt make their music any less boring. It feels like they're using the same chords over and over in different orders in each song, and also id like to know, is Tim Armstrong singing in Television? If yes please rate this review as useful if not then rate it as unuseful.

the god of BR's atlantic years.......2006-03-28

when i first got into BR, i shyed away from this album like a fool at first. i thought when people said "they left epitaph", that they changed and sold out.......selling out is green day folks. BR signing to atlantic was something that provided some major changes is music and lineup.(following this album)

i just have to say, i love this album to death. infected is definately a song that is a total landmark. i also think the title song is amazing as well. some songs like tiny voices and slumber are hidden gems.

the only gripe is that they had to remake 21st century digital boy. that was totally unnecessary, but it doesnt really matter too much.

i would say that this album is an essential cd for BR fans, but not their best by far. i may put it on par with generator. this album is the biggest fish on the small pond of BR albums on atlantic records.(recipe for hate, gray race, no substance, and new america)

The Process of Belief finds Bad Religion returning to their roots in two important aspects. First, original guitarist Brett Gurewitz has rejoined the ranks, bringing with him the taut songwriting skills that made Bad Religion hardcore pioneers in the mid-1980s. Secondly, the band has returned to Gurewitz's successful indie imprint Epitaph after years on a major. The result is an album that captures the clean joy and vigor of melodic hardcore without sacrificing its moral core. Songs like "Supersonic" and "Prove It" are fast, catchy, and irresistible examples of the kind of prime ADD punk that's over before you know it. But the likes of "Materialist" and "Kyoto Now" find Bad Religion at their best. Greg Graffin sings at one point that "you might not think that there's any wisdom in a f***ed up punk rock song," but his rants against global pollution, ambition, and family politics prove otherwise. It's easy to imagine.......2007-03-04

All the reviews you will read about this album will talk about Mr. Brett's return. You will also read about the fact that this marks Bad Religion's return to Epitaph. Though those are two important things to mention about the album, I think the most important thing to say is that the songwriting is top notch. The intensity and melodiousness of this record is like a breath of fresh air after the stagnant "New America." (Personally I was convinced that was to be their last album, it just had that sputtering out sound to it.)

From the first seconds of "Supersonic" the listener becomes acutely aware that Bad Religion is not only back, they are better than ever. It is not until "Broken" that they even give you a second to breathe. "Broken" then gives you a radio-friendly pop sheen that is unexpected and welcome. Immediately after, however, the speed is back.

From "Sorrow" to "Sound Defense" and from "Evangeline" to "Lie," Process is proof that Bad Religion still is the best rock and roll act of the last twenty years (and counting.)

What a come back.......2006-11-26

BR hadn't had an album out for a while before this one and being reunited with Brett Gurewitz helped out a lot. This album is definitely more rock than punk, but the fast tempos are still there. Greg Graffin's voice is controlled and fluid with his delivery and the guitar is booming and this album just plain out kills. One of my favorite driving albums. It is very short though, but EVERY song is outstanding. A good starting point for people new to BR. Then work your way back.

Great Music For Those Who Usually Hate Hardcore.......2006-07-22

First of all, let me admit that I am a 35 year old man who rarely likes fast or loud music anymore. I usually spend my time listening to groups like Belle and Sabastian, Stone Roses, Van Morrison, Nick Drake, The Smiths, etc. It's not that I haven't tried listening to certain hardcore punk or modern heavy metal bands. It's just that I find their lack of melody and lack of originality terribly frustrating and boring. It's not simply that my ears can't take "loud" music anymore. The heavy metal groups are usually fronted by a singer who wants to either sound like the Cookie Monster or Rob Halford. A normal sounding voice is simply too much to ask from these guys. Most hardcore groups are rarely original and just try to play as fast as they can and usually have a singer who likes to sing with a whiny voice or a gruff voice.

Imagine my surprise when I finally found a group that played fast and had a singer who had a voice that a man over 30 could tolerate. As if that wasn't enough, this group also had songs that were highly melodic and not lyrically inane. The first album I ever heard from Bad Religion was No Control. The songs weren't as melodic as I would have liked, but I found the music and the singer's voice and style of singing absolutely invigorating. Sadly, the album was a cassette and it eventually fell apart. Since I wasn't absolutely in love with the album, I never actively sought to buy it again.

Years later I bought a bunch of cassettes from an Ebay auction. Bad Religion's Recipe for Hate was included in the lot. I decided to listen to it once. I figured at least the singer wouldn't give this rapidly aging dude a headache. Needless to say, I was blown away by the album. It was much more melodic than No Control. I truly love RECIPE. I then read some reviews of other albums and decided to buy Against the Grain. Sadly, I didn't find that album appealing. The music just sounded too thrashy, too short and seemed repetitive and didn't reach the melodic heights of RECIPE.

I had no idea which album to buy next or even if I should buy another album. I'm glad to say that PROCESS was my next choice. The few bad reviews came from people saying it was too poppy and wasn't hard enough. This was my clue that I would probably enjoy it more than Against the Grain. My decision turned out to be a good one. This album is much more melodic than Against the Grain. I simply love it. The songs are more diverse and more melodic. I'm planning to buy the EMPIRE album next. The old hardcore fans don't seem to enjoy it as much as their older albums. That's a sign to me that EMPIRE is probably going to be great.

When you are 35 years old, you are no longer interested whether a group has "sold out." You no longer get into major arguments with your friends if the new album by your favorite group sounds "wimpy." Trust me, I went through that phase when I was young. Metallica has had to deal with such stuff from their old heavy metal fans. It's rather pathetic to watch. I'm now only interested in what sounds good. Bad Religion no longer make albums like they did fifteen years ago. They have not sold out. Their melodies have grown and the songs are more diverse. They have simply grown and gotten better. For those who want them to sound like they did fifteen years ago, it's not going to happen. They can't return to what they once were. They must be who they currently are and not what you want them to be. Graffin is simply too smart to have remained stagnant.

By the way, if anyone knows another hardcore band they might think I like, mention it in future reviews. Right now Bad Religion is the only hardcore punk band I can truly say I like. I heard the Misfits and love the singer's Elvis voice and many of the songs have great hooks, but the production on those albums is so bad, I can't listen to them.

Great album people, thanks to the guys from BR for returning to form. All songs deserve 5 stars. Well except for epiphany, id give that a 4. Epiphany has two meanings, im sure of it. One is to do with God and the other is to do with a realization of something profound. Since im religous i tend to think that this song is singing about the latter even though i dont think it is.
Anyway a 5/5 album. Buy it!

This album is definitely one of BR best albums. The songs are very upfront and agressive in your face punk rock songs. My favourite track off this album is 'What Can You Do.' Gregs vocal style on that song is insane, especially on the second verse. All the songs are very well crafted and are fast, hence the album is quite short but still the quality over quantity approach is present and that makes this an album any fan of punk rock should have.

Ive noticed that with a few of BR albums in my opinion that is that they will kick things off with a few super fast songs and then slow it down a bit pace wise before picking it up again and then slowing it down for the ending songs.

You'll see what i mean with this one from track 9...it gets really awesome and the last 5 songs are extremely good.

Basically if you dont have this one then go and get it now...also props to the cover art.

this is definently one of my favorite albums of all time. anyone who thinks punk rock cannot be intellectual, should check out bad religion, especially this album. suffer is good from start to finish, even the songs that don't stand out as much at first, grow on you and become some of your favorites. get this album or no control, they are both great. the rest of their albums are actually pretty mixed in my opinion. a few great songs and some not so great ones. against the grain is pretty good and fans of old school punk will like how could hell be any worse. the rest of their stuff, like i said is mixed, but none of it is bad. but suffer and no control, just about an hour of music, are enough in my opinion to name them great. suffer is though, probably their best. if you want thought-provoking,fast,melodic punk, or if you like pennywise you will love this album.

Bad Religion is known for being one of, if not the, most influential punk band(s) of the 90s punk revival. And this album is pretty much the reason why.

The amount of improvement in Bad Religion's musical talent from their first record, "How Could Hell be Any Worse?" (which is also excellent, check it out!) is astonishing. Greg Graffin developed his singing a lot, and that's the most noticable difference. Graffin's songwriting talent is astonishing, and with lyrics like this:

"There's a loser in the house, and a puppet on the stool,
And a crowded way of life, and a black reflecting pool,
And as the people bend, the moral fabric dies,
The country can't pretend to ignore its people's cries."

he's bound to make you think (and bring out the dictionary more often than not). As you can probably tell from the lyrics, Suffer is very politically oriented (as Bad Religion tends to be}, dealing with a whole range of ideas that I'm too lazy to list. So on the whole, the lyrics are pure genious, as is Greg Graffin.

The guitars, bass, and drums are great too, and evidently helped bring in the modern underground punk sound of today. Catchy riffs and fast beats make it very easy to listen to over and over again, especially songs like "1,000 More Fools", "Forbidden Beat", "Pessimistic Lines", and "You Are (the government)".

Bad Religion is an incredibly adept and talented band, and Suffer more than proves it. If you're interested in punk at all, you owe it to yourself to pick this one up.

The startling sole instance in which an albums repetition does not annoy me.......2006-04-21

I am no fan of repetition. Those radio stations which play the same song every other hour, (which is to say all of them,) annoy the living hell out of me. I insist on maintaining an expansive personal collection of music and rotating that collection in such a way that I'll go through at least ten cd's before returning to a favorite. That being said, let me say that "Suffer" is the one album that, when my car's cd player automatically cycles the disk back to track 1, I won't eject from the console with irritation. This album is so catchy, so fun to try to sing a long with, and yet so amazingly deep and profound, that I've been known to let it hang out in the car for days. If your new to the band, (who's entire body of work can be said to have only produced a child's handful of substandard songs,) then begin at the beginning, with this one. If you've enjoyed at all any of their other offerings, then there is no conceivable way for you to be disappointed upon the purchase of "suffer." Probably my favorite punk record of all time.

this one is definately my favorite Bad Religion album. every song is listenable pretty much.

you are the government is a great opener and will hook in bad religion newbies.

100 more fools is one of the best on here and deserves a place on all BR compilations..how much is enough is definately amazing too. i could go on and on. also noteworthy are land of competition, pessimistic lines, do what you want, and forbidden beat.

the only problem i have with this is the title track. that is the WEAKEST thing on the entire album. not bad, but i hate how it gets the most concert time out of everything on this album. not a bad song, but yeah it is the worst on one of the best BR albums.

all in all a 5/5. no control and against the grain are worthy opponents though!

5 star punk album.......2007-05-05

I can remember Maximum Rock and Roll once saying (in praise) about this band that you needed a dictionary to understand the lyrics. While I wouldnt go that far their lyrics are definatly far beyond the usual "boo goverment" "I hate society" this is much more worth listening to. Put together with such great powerful music the opening track knocks you for 6. This has got to be one of the punk rock essentials.

Great band, great lyrics (check out the 'rock and roll' style pictures inside, very punk rock guys) pure cheese! Lol.

This is the hardcore album without a doubt from BR, filled with angst and agression you'll probably p**s alot of people off when playing this next to them. But thats what i love about this cd, all the songs are fast and to the point. Also your gonna need a dictionary while listening to this, if you can catch what Greg is singing. The best songs on the album are: God Song, Faith Alone, track 6 (cuz i cant spell the title lol), Against the grain, The positive aspect of negative thinking, unacceptable and 21st century digital boy.

Also Im sick of all the 'Terrorist Religions' as well Greg so thanks for an awesome album that has content more relevant today than when it was first released.

the last truly amazing BR album of the 90's.......2006-03-30

yes, i believe that this is BR's pinnacle. they were at their top game here. the album starts awesome, but kind of drops off near the last few songs....the closer "walk away" is amazing though! i think that suffer and no control beat this one, but being 3rd or 4th isnt bad. i believe that the only album to come close to the holy trinity is "stranger than fiction." i recommend this to all punk rock fans. BR was on a roll, but sadly this was the last truly amazing thing they made until stranger than fiction.

process and beleif and empire strikes first are also noteworthy.

Bad Religion is one the finest bands in Punk Rock. Their longevity is testament to this fact. Against the Grain is the best Bad Religion album ever. BR's Songwriting on this album is top notch as usual, with lyrics that blast the status quo and leave the listener ready to start a revolution. The music a fast paced, and the guitar work is some of the best in the genre, with foot-tapping riffs and transitions the happen so smoothly you wpnder what the hell just happened.

A Defining Moment In '90's Punk.......2005-11-16

The brilliance of the work on the early Bad Religion albums (Suffer, No Control and Against The Grain) is that it manages to be simultaneously delicate yet undeniably coarse. In terms of the lyrics, they can't get much more intricate, and yet they retain a hardened edge laced with a characteristically punk sense of discontent, which makes for a perfect balance. Vocally and musically the Bad Religion of Against The Grain are far more raw than they are they are currently, but there is still a sharpness which ensures that their raw edge does not make them come across as simply sloppy. Highlights include Anesthesia - with Brett doing what he does best and delving fearlessly into realm of the deeply troubled individual, and Greg furiously spitting social criticisms via his seamless polysyllabic approach in Get Off and Quality and Quantity. God Song is another gem which sits comfortably in the company of other Bad Religion tracks questioning the nature of religion, such as Chimaera and Generator, which are arguably some of their most effective songs. It's inconceivable that the boys will once again achieve the kind of punk perfection they did with this album, (and with Generator and Stranger Than Fiction) so no self-respecting punk should hesitate buying a copy of Against The Grain. It is a classic which effectively helped to define the genre of 90's punk rock.

Different but good.......2007-07-08

I like this album...the songs are very diverse. The album has a darker feel to it than the previous ones and that dark approach continued on Generator. The only song that doesnt really fit on here is Kerosene. Seriously they should have shoved it onto The New America seven years later in 2000. The other complaint I have is that the sound quality is pretty bad...not as bad as the sound quality on the SACD of Stranger Than Fiction but still not up to par.

However on with the good...
the songs themselves are really good. The lyrics as always are thought provoking and interesting and the harmonies and backup vocals from other musicians on 'Watch It Die' and 'Struck A Nerve' are very well placed.
The drumming and guitar work is also very well implemented to fit each song. The song 'All Good Soldiers' is actually quite good...don't know why many people don't like it. It sounds kinda like 'Atomic Garden' from Generator...well thats the feeling I get from the song anyway.

My top 5 songs in no order from this album would be:
Recipe For Hate, American Jesus, My Poor Friend Me, Lookin' In and Skyscraper.

I know my review was short but im hungover right now and really dont have the time to write a long review...the music speaks for itself anyway...

Bad Religion at their finest.......2006-11-05

Although I am not a fan of Punk Rock, I find Bad Religion to be great since once in a while they will release a song/political statement that is really clever and well presented. Recipe for Hate is not their best release musically (for that I would recommend "No Substance"), but lyrically there are several tracks that really appeal to me. Portrait of Authority and Skyscraper are two tracks that really got me hooked to Bad Religion. Although I do not agree with all of Bad Religions statements and opinions(actually, I disagree with most of them), I am glad that they go on stating them.

great stuff!.......2006-09-16

This is a great album with some of the best punk songs I have heard. Stuck a nerve is probably my favourite cut on the album, with American Jesus and Recipe for Hate following behind.

A note to Agnostic Vegetarian "Sizemore": In Watch it die, it is not Greg who sings the 'put to sleep' verse. It is Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam.

Makes me want to mosh .......2006-05-27

"recipe for hate","American Jesus", "modern day catastrophits" are all bad ass songs that have good guitar riffs. See with me, punk rock is all about how the music jumps into your veins and makes you want to get up and break stuff. I listen to lyrics too, but the guitar is such a great instrument. Greg Graffen drives me nuts with his hand gestures and he just looks retarted, but Bad Religion is one of the best bands ever. This CD is awesome, like i said it makes me want to mosh, great punk.
