      Album Description

The follow up to 2002's Beautifully Strange, this sophomore set finds the Los Angeles based singer/songwriter, churning out another set of catchy but heartfelt tunes. From the infectious, hook-laden "All I Need" to the laid back 70's soul of "Into Me", Owens has crafted another eclectic masterpiece. Fugitive Moments also finds Owens looking more outward, with overtly political songs such as "War Machine", "Pretty Lies" and "Election Day". The song "Never Change" features a guest spot by Rusted Root's Liz Berlin.

      4 out of 5 stars Something Everlasting.......2005-04-16

Gene Owens' EP follow-up to "Beautifully Strange" is another excellent set. "All I Need" is a catchy hook-laden track with the emotionally potent chorus, "All I need is something everlasting; all I need is someone just like you." "Never Change" is a midtempo rocker with Jeff Marshall's electric lead guitar in a song about friends growing apart. "Into Me" is another excellent track flavored by Anne King's flugelhorn that has a soft jazz flavor, "You look just like an angel when you're sleeping; Baby, you got me down on my knees." "Election Day" is an acoustic track with a cynical view of politics. "Fugitive Moments" is another excellent set by the talented developing artist. Enjoy!

In a race for the roses, all thoroughbred entries finish non-stop winners on SLOWBURNING. Choice house-music tracks are selected and mixed by Glasgow Underground head honcho, Kevin McKay. His vast knowledge, discreet taste, and keen ear all come into play. Starting out of the blocks, Black Rascals - "Blaze Theme Track" give a nod to an easy, loping pace. Picking it up substantially, Swing 52 - "The Color Of My Skin" belt out soulful vocals. Soft and sultry, Blue Six - "Music and Wine" will have you dreaming of moments to come. Shifting back to center ring, Dubtribe - "We Used To Dance" remind us of infinite nights, every night, and the world is young. Space Jam - "Don't Stop" and Jii Hoo - "Let Me Love You" round out the bend in fine fashion. The heavens are made and open up for all too see on Jori Hulkkonen's - "7 Nights, & 7 Days". UBQ Project - "When I Fell I Love" is the provocative, sensuous tonic for any broken hearts. Finally, Deep Sensation - "Get Up" for the get down, an appropriate dismount. No corrals needed here - all tracks are equally comforable on the dancefloor or lounging on the sofa. My pick for the triple crown, uptown, downtown.

            Album Description

2 CD set containing the albums Rival & Slow Burn. Reggae is one of the bloodlines of New Zealand music -- which accounts for the extraordinary success of Hamilton's Katchafire who, two years ago, emerged as the hardest working band in the country. Their astonishing debut album, the prophetically named Revival, sold in excess of 30,000 copies (double platinum) and they scored massive hits with songs like Giddy Up, the biggest selling NZ single of 2002. They have also, opened shows for the likes of Michael Franti and Spearhead. And now they are stepping up again with a cracking new album Slow-Burning which shows them reaching a new level. More than on their debut they pull in threads of dub and toasting, there are musical references to the sound of classic Trojan records. 2006

              Album Description

Mining the great New Zealand love and tradition of reggae (reflected over the years by bands such as the Herbs, Aotearoa, Dread Beat & Blood, Cornerstone Roots, etc), roots reggae outfit Katchafire hit paydirt with their Bob Marley influenced debut 'Revival', making the band a household name in New Zealand via a slew of videos and radio singles, plus considerable hard work and extensive touring. The new album 'Slow-Burning' finds this eight-piece outfit continuing to mine their reggae influences, although with considerable new-found confidence and originality. The Marley influences are obviously still there (I mean how could a reggae band not be influenced by the great man?) but are now less pronounced as the band, and particularly principle songwriters Logan Bell, Jordan Bell and Jamey Ferguson, find their own songwriting footing (all songs on this album are written by the band). The blend of "pop" and reggae is now almost seamless, while the use of horns and harmonica on tracks such as "Roots Music", "I And I", "Frisk Me Down" and "Call Right Up" add real colour and swing to proceedings, resulting in an album that is overall more cohesive and infinitely tighter sonically.
