Not going to write a dissertation..........2005-05-10
But this has RHYTHM. Been exploring the soul jazz/boogaloo genre for a while, and there are common threads...the hammond, the alto sax, the jazz, the jammin...but there are only a few albums out there that have the 'updated beat' like this album has, and it makes it so much funkier and cooler to listen too. The beat I'm talking about sounds like it belongs in a hip-hop song of the mid 90's..it's the beat that got me into music in the first place.
So right its wrong.......2004-05-17
Pure Cane Sugar. Pure cane sweet it is. All tracks are strong. About half of these tracks carry the James Brown style of vocal, but the strength of this album lies in the instrumentals. You like that Hammond B3 organ sound, extended B3 jams paired with a super funky hot rythm section - this is a must have. This album even pulls off a flute with contagiousness on 10 (and that's almost unheard of in my book). My favorites of the album are 3 Pure Cane, and 10 Culebra - both instrumental, downtempo jams. Those two alone worth the purchase. And there are no skippers in here. Favorites to skip to as with everything, but nothing requiring the punch.
And for the love of God, see these guys live if you get the chance. Float by the Daptone web site for gig info. They seem to reside in the Chicago / NY area when not out and about. If they ever get out West, this is one group that will get the No Holds Barred treatment to get me there. Never heard them in person, granted, but some things are simple no-brainers.
Sugar has some other stuff out I am slowly acquiring. Some are not available (out of print) these days, so you may have to hunt the unusual pipelines to get them. But its worth it. Try "gemm" where Amazon has a void.
Super chunk o' slick f-u-n-k-y soul.......2003-06-05
Initially heard this one at a friends house and thought it was from the 1970's. When I learned it came out in 2002, I was amazed. Who is producing this fat, juicy kind of R&B/Soul these days? Sugarman 3 is. Tight bass an' drum section with hooky guitar riffs. Echo's of blaxplotation era soundtracks. Nice horn section an' that funky clavinet sound. Vocals by Lee Fields in the James Brown style.

Customer Reviews:
Some of Reich's best works.......2005-07-30
Octet and Music for a Large Ensemble are two of my favorite Steve reich works. Octet has lots of low winds and piano, giving it a lot of charm and textural warmth. Music for a Large Ensemble has more of an urgent feel, more of a piercing texture at times, and is also a beautiful piece (one of his best, I think). If you like Reich's earlier style, along the lines of Music for Eighteen Musicians, you will probably like these - Violin Phase is more of a novelty to me, as I am more drawn to Steve's pieces that have more harmonic motion (like the other two I just mentioned). If you've never heard Steve Reich, this disk would be a fine start, offering great recordings of two complex, somewhat epic pieces, and a sample of his earliest style (phasing by manipulating tape speeds)
Classic Reich..........2004-05-20
Different Trains? Nah, this is the groundbreaking work that has given Reich such a cutting edge in the world of 20th century music. The pure tonal palette that he achieves with the 30 plus ensemble in the self titled is incredible, and the complexity and busyness of the 4 part phase shifting of Violin Phase is not to be missed. Octet was a step forward showing his growing interest in complex melodies, and was certainly another evolution in his writing style. If you ever want to collect some beautiful music, this would be a good starting point.
...and they told Mozart he used too many notes!.......2002-03-26
Upon starting the journey into this volume of work, keep in mind that there is a lot to listen for and all of it is soothing yet extremely busy. "Music For A Lage Ensemble" is in four sections, each of which is marked by a key change. The interwoven contrapuntal lines never cease until the music suddenly stops. "Violin Phase" is a great multi-faceted phase piece, unlike his 2-part phases of the previous years, and exploits the remarkable talents of Shem Guibbory. However, it is the "Octet" that takes the prize on this collection, or any other for that matter. You are immediately immersed in a cascading waterfall of pianos over a still stream of sustained strings. The virtuosity needed for the pianists to perform this work is astounding. You only need to look at the cover to see that. The cover of this album is the final ten bars of "Octet." The tempo is MM=204. Then try to play it that speed. The pianists Edmund Niemann and Nurit Tilles endure similar patterns continuously for the entire 17:30 of the piece. The piece ends with a web of pianos, flute and piccolo lines over still sustained strings that leaves the listener very satisfied. All of the music on this record makes you feel happy with your life for the time being. Listen and you will know for yourself.
Reich's Peak Period.......2002-01-18
There are 3 tracks on this CD. Forget "Violin Phase" which really is just filler, and from an earlier era in Reich's development. The other two tracks are what you want to hear. "Octet" and "Music for a Large Ensemble" are Steve Reich at his very finest. He had developed his sound, but was still relatively young and hungry for success. You will listen to this music in complete amazement that these are classic acoustic instruments. The trick in making them sound so unique is in brilliant compositions heard here.
Minimilism at its best.......2000-06-14
This cd was the first cd to introduce me to Reich's compositional style. Little did I know how minimalism could be so exciting. The Music for a Large Ensemble uses a great pallete of tone color to pull the listener in. The Violin Phase is one of my favorites. The different harmonic and melodic patterns that are created through the phasing of the instruments is amazing. The only reason I give it four starts is because the versions of the recordings are somewhat short. To really get a feel for the music and to better experience what Reich is trying to do, I would suggest listening to longer recordings. Music for a Large Ensemble is available in much longer versions. Octet and Violin Phase are much harder to find, so I would definitely recommend this cd for those works.

Album Description
SOUL DONKEY, the Sugarman Three's sophomore release on Desco Records, documented a first turn towards the more raw funk sound into which the band would later fully embrace on Daptone's PURE CANE SUGAR. As an album, it has a sound and a vibe and has been sought after by collectors and fans alike since it went out of print around the turn of the millenium.
Try it on. It feels good.

If you like funk, this is a great recording to pick up. A more modern influence in the way the drums are mixed, but overall very vintage sounding, and the band is amazing. Great hooks, fat beats, and tasty solos...what's not to like?

Album Description
Sugar's Boogaloo, was the Sugarman Three's debut album. Since it's initial release on Desco Records nearly ten years ago, it has grown to be a sought after classic among funk, soul, and organ-jazz enthusiasts. It's raw organ-driven grooves are exemplary of the early phase of a band that would become a staple on the scene and are the perfect backdrop for a summer barbecue or a late-night hang.

Don't delay - buy it today!.......2004-01-25
There are several reasons why you should buy this NOW:
1) This is a compilation of the Sugarman Three's first 2 LPs for Desco (Sugar's Boogaloo & Soul Donkey), plus there are some non-LP singles here too ('Cherry Pickin'', 'Daisy's Boogaloo', '2001', 'Soul Barrio Pt. 2', 'Mudd Slide', 'Five For Five')
2) If you've heard any other Sugarman Three stuff (or even heard about them), you'll know that this is KILLER BOOGALOO: authentic 60s/70s sounds (recorded in NYC in the 90s!) from real musicians using real instruments. You'll get tenor sax, the Hammond organ, guitar & drums, and these guys ARE ON FIRE!
3) If you've heard Lou Donaldson, 70s Jimmy Smith, Brother Jack McDuff (especially with George Benson), Boogaloo Joe Jones, any of the other groovers on Blue Note or Prestige from the mid 60s to the early 70s, or The JBs, and you still want more ....
4) Desco is OUT OF PRINT, and you're lucky if you can find the original LPs, CDs or 45s: they fetch some pretty high prices on ebay and in mail-order catalogues. This disc (on the German 'Unique' label) is probably your best bet!
Groovelicious.......2001-12-12
Super-funky groovelicious. If you like Robert Walter, Jimmy Smith, Galactic, and/or the Meters, this disc is for you. Sugarman Three provide a raw, tight sound that when on the system, you can’t help but shake yo (...)– I dare you to keep still
It's the nice........2001-08-24
If you like The Meters, funky R&B/soul, than you'll like Sugarman Three. Good party music.

Amazon.com essential recording
Reich's music is often lumped together in the "minimalist" arena with that of Philip Glass, but the two are really poles apart. Reich's music has always been more heterogeneous than Glass's: more colorful, more obviously structured, and generally far more rapid of movement. This means that Reich's musical forms complete themselves rather quickly, on a more normal time scale. The three works on this disc all represent Reich's unique style at its best, and one of them--the Octet--is surely the most important work for eight instruments since Stravinsky's Octet dating from the first decades of the 20th century. The performances could hardly be bettered, and as an introduction to Reich's earlier music, this disc is clearly essential. --David Hurwitz

Funk yourself!.......2003-08-20
One of the funkiest acid jazz CD's I've ever heard. Plenty of itching to keep you scratching. It will trap you in its grooves and catapult you from your seat. Plenty of sax and Hammond B-3 solos, and some flute (nice touch!). Get all the albums by Sugarman 3 if you are into acid jazz; pure Cane Sugar is as good.
soul dynamite.......2002-08-31
the only thing better than this album is seeing this band live. do yourself a favor and get all their albums. new wax hits the shelves in October but you can get 45s(yes, those small round things) now from the new label:...

Is that a Donkey?....
NO!! It's a Soul Donkey!!
I LOVE this album. Found it by accident in a music shop in Sydney, and have since become a devoted fan of both the Sugarman Three and Desco Records. Jam packed with tight little tracks that you just wanna hear live because you know that they could make it last for two minutes or twenty. Makes you move your *ss from start to finish. Buy it! You'll never regret it!

A great follow-up to Sugar's Boogaloo.......2000-11-17
Sugarman is back! He's got some goods in his bag.
This is an amazingly funky release from Desco. This is the band's second outing, the first one was titled Sugar's Boogaloo, and I thought it was wicked as well. But this blows that away with way heavier jams.
The tunes are still short (2:30-4:00), but damn, they're sweet! To those who are not familiar with the Sugarman 3 linup: sax/flute, hammond, guitar, drums. No slow songs, just heavy, heavy funk jams of the best kind. Nothing like the smooth new funk heroes (JTQ, Brand New Heavies, and yes, sometimes even the Greyboy Allstars), these guys are for real, they kid around not.
All the songs are filled with cute little breaks, with one tasty lick following the other. The sound could be compared to what Lou Donaldson was sporting in the late '60s. Way cool, give it a listen.

Customer Reviews:
Pleasant British pop/psych, but not essential.......2000-06-23
Formed in Yorkshire, England in 1965, Smoke, led by vocalist Mick rowley and guitarisst Mal Luker, produced a body of pop/psych work which is at once pleasant and yet forgettable. Best known for the track "My Friend Jack" included in original 1967 and late 1976 versions on this compilation by German reissue experts Repertoire Records, Smoke was basically a singles band, who charted only one, with "Jack" (#45 on the British charts). "The Best of Sugar Man" consists of a- and b-sides as well as 4 previously unissued tracks, which turn out to be among the highlights of the set. Much of the material is rather pedestrian pop music, lacking in intensity or creativity. The previously unreleased tracks, "I Wanna Make It With You" "She Put The Hurt On Me" "Magic" and "Like A Good Man Should" have more punch than most of the rest of the tracks and its a shame the band didn't show this side of itself more often, since on the occasions when they did rev up, the results were much more appealing than their typical pop stuff. For Smoke fans this compilation will be all they will ever need, for most others, it is much more than you will want. 3 stars is as far as I can go on this one, and even that may be a bit of a stretch.
British psychedelia.......2000-06-18
A product of mid-1960s Britain, Smoke were one of the more talented psychedelic bands to record during the period. With a guitar-driven sound reminiscent of Creation/Who/Small Faces/Kinks mod psychedelic rock, Smoke's recording are filled with phased guitars, trippy lyrics, and reverb. Not the most original, nor talented band of the period, nonetheless Smoke left in their wake a quite interesting musical legacy, the best parts of which are gathered by German reissue specialists Repertoire Records on this 28 track, 78 minute compilation. All of the key singles are included, as are essential album tracks. Highlights include the European hit "My Friend Jack" and the title track, both of which are more or less dedicated to the lysergic life. The songs are almost without exception group originals and are varied enough and of sufficient quality to remain interesting throughout. This anthology spans not only the group's heyday (1967-69) but also samples their 1970s recordings. Also included are five tracks recorded by the group as The Chords Five. Not absolutely essential psychedelia, but definitely worthy of inclusion in the collections of fans of the genre.
