Product Description
The fluid grooves & restless heart searching of 'All Follow Everyone' stalk a sundown landscape. It could be the empty streets & dimly lit bars of an alienating metropolis. Equally it could take you to distant shores with the moon rising & space to think of the girl or guy that got away. Certainly, it's going to take you on a mesmeric journey like no other album so far this decade. While your regular British mid-twenties songwriting pair have been busy with crash chords & histrionics, Alex Pilkington & Simon Shippey have allowed shadows, soul, string sections & electronically nuanced suggestion to seep into the acoustic songwriter heart of their work. So light another cigarette, pour a glass of something dark & sweet & let their haunting, poignant, sublime songs go to work on memories good, bad & yet to form. Island Records International. 'Plenty of great atmosphere, 'In a Rut' is a particularly

5 out of 5 stars A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10

Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.

The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).

This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.

I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.

5 out of 5 stars a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15

I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.

Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

The guitar and vocals on this CD will blow you away. Of all of the Catholic Classics CDs, this one is my favorite - an awesome way to learn some of those more traditional songs without a voicy choir.

4 out of 5 stars Surprising, but beautifully done.......2006-01-12

I really expected a more traditional arrangement with organ & choir, so I was in for a bit of a shock right off the bat. The arrangements are relatively simple with one or two voices and limited orchestration. However the effect is wonderful. The primary singer has an unusual high and clear voice, and the harmonies raise goosebumps with their beauty (all I know about music I learned from my highschool punk rock band, so you'll have to listen to the tracks above if my description is unclear).

Some of the tracks are forgettable, but the others are truly outstanding. "Praise God From Whom All Blessings Flow" is wonderful, and exceeded only by "Holy God, We Praise Thy Name." The mixture of latin chant with vernacular on "For the Beauty of the Earth/Ubi Caritas" and "Go Silent Friend/In Paradisium" was tastefully done. The performers and arrangers also rescued the otherwise saccharine "How Great Thou Art" and turned it into a genuinely inspiring hymn, although they were unable to accomplish a similar feat with the thoroughly overplayed "Amazing Grace."

So many other people have beautiful renditions of Ave Maria, so the track on this CD barely registers for me. Panis Angelicus is done better on many other disks as well.

Still, if it were only "Praise God..." and "Holy God..." on this CD, it would be worth the price. Truly excellent.

4 out of 5 stars This is the one to get........2003-09-08

Very beautiful and inspiring rendition of some favorite Catholic classics. The most beautiful: "Praise God from Whom All Blessings Flow" which fades in the middle into a chant-like revery-inducing song only to flourish again with new-found faith at the end. Second most beautiful: "Holy God, We Prise They Name," which builds in three voices towards the end, one added for each person of the Blessed Trinity. Also noteworthy: "For the Beauty of the Earth," with its mix of Latin and English transitions and blending of Gregorian chant in between verses. Good rendition of "Ave Maria" and "Simple Gifts." A lot of steel-string guitar played strong and true, but not overwhelming the beautiful voice of David Fischer. Fischer accompanies himself on the best tracks, to great effect (especially "Praise God from Whom All Blessings Flow").

5 out of 5 stars A Timeless Tradition.......2005-12-15

I have been listening to this choir since 1982. I wore out the original tape, in the days before CD's. I have been to the actual performance, a week before Christmas three times and am going back this year 2005.

The performance is so delicate, yet so powerful that it is emotional and moving, regardless of your orientation. Imagine this performance, in the manificent HH Richardson-designed Trinity Church, Copley Square, Boston. People wait for hours to get in. The lights go out, the Choir, brass timpani and organ just work so well together. One by one, candles are lit, and the huge church comes alive. The choir processes down the asiles singing in strength and everyone joins in.

It is a spiritual experience even if you are not religious. The strength of the performance invites you to participate. I find myself singing louder than I do anywhere else.

After my first child was born, I held her in my arms, and "Candlelight Carol" became my anthem:
How do you capture
The wind on the water?
How do you count all the stars in the sky?
How can you measure
The love of a mother
Or how can you write down
A baby's first cry?

I am not a musician and to my ear, the Chorus is professional. The tunes are classic, but they bring a new life to familiar tunes.

If you've been feeling stressed out, this is the perfect time to calm the nerves, focus on meaning and purpose, and let you enjoy yourself for a few minutes.

If you can't attend, do the next best thing, get the CD, turn it up till you hear the bass of the organ rumble your rafters and sing your heart out.

Enjoy!

3 out of 5 stars A nice blend of music for Christmas.......2003-12-30

This is one of my favorite discs at Christmas time. It is at once peaceful and calm, yet joyous and expectant. There are the usual brass and organ carols, but also stunning arrangements and performances of lesser-known things. Prime among these are the setting of "Away in a Manger" that makes me want to pull off the highway and listen just to that song without distractions, and the pulsing, exciting "What Strangers are These", which I have never heard anywhere else. Chorally, the disc is a little unsatisfying because of balance issues with the rest of the disc--some songs are loud, others very soft, so it makes it hard to listen to without having to adjust the volume periodically. However, I still wouldn't trade it for all the Messiahs in the world!

Album Description

The incendiary soul / jazz / funk of The Bo-Keys' "The Royal Sessions" is a hard-hitting and authentic modern take on Memphis' original soul-stew sound - a mixture of original instrumental and vocal features that fuse R&B fundamentals with elements of modern hip-hop.

An all-star section of Stax sidemen - Ronnie Williams (The Bar-Kays, David Porter) on Hammond B-3 organ, drummer Willie Hall (The Bar-Kays, the Blues Brothers), and Charles "Skip" Pitts (Isaac Hayes, Al Green) on wah-wah guitar - joins garage rock prodigy Scott Bomar (Impala) on bass to lay down deep funk grooves for a mighty horn section consisting of Memphis' finest young players.

Recorded and mixed at Willie Mitchell's (Hi Records, Al Green) Royal Studios, The Royal Sessions is steeped in the Memphis tradition. But it's much more than an homage: it's the sound of Memphis now - familiar, fresh, and unquestionably fantastic.

4 out of 5 stars Review: BoKey's Royal Sessions.......2007-01-04

Good CD with good musicians. If you like blues, jazz, or both -- you'll like this CD. The title track is probably the best.

4 out of 5 stars Musical Comfort Food.......2005-01-15

The Bo-Keys are an all-instrumental group who specialize in funky southern soul. Guitarist Skipp Pitts and Drummer Willie Hall are both veterans of the legendary Stax records, the label which called itself "Soulsville USA." "The Royal Sessions" channels the spirit of Memphis and Muscle Shoals; each track is infused with a pulsating rhythm section and down-home horn charts.

The Bo Keys are at their best when they keep it simple; tunes like "Coming Home Baby" and "Deuce and a Quarter" feature soulful organ and horns over a fatback rhythm groove. The ballad "I Remember Stax"- which features some beautiful guitar work by Skip Pitts- is one of the disc's highpoints. While most of the tracks on "The Royal Sessions" are solid performances, there are a few weak-points. A decent performance of the Jimmy Smith workhorse "Back at the Chicken Shack" is marred by a silly vocal track featuring a Wolfman Jack sound-alike babbling about hot sauce or ribs or something. It's the kind of gimmick that might impress House of Blues patrons, but serious music fans will probably find themselves reaching for the "skip" button on their CD player. "My Country Loves Me", another tune with a spoken vocal track, sounds like an attempt at Gil Scot-Heron style political commentary that never quite coheres.

"The Royal Sessions" is the musical equivalent of comfort food; while not necessarily original or innovative, it's hot, greasy and sure to bring a smile.

2 out of 5 stars HYPE.......2004-08-30

i bought this cd recently after i'd read a few favorable reviews, the memphis gunslingers involvment, etc. the cd is okay, but doesn't live up to all the hype. here's a few things: the rap/spoken vocal stuff is really really awful. the jimmy smith cover song is unlistenable. their originals are not that hot. overall, regardless of the personnel, it's not essential. if you are already hip to this genre of music, this cd is no big deal. i already used my copy for trade credit at my local cd store. if you are looking for a new band playing this type of music, try a cd by "the dipolmats of solid sound" - they are a current 60's soul/instrumental quartet who absolutely bury the bo-keys.

4 out of 5 stars You need this CD.......2004-07-09

My sister sent me this CD for my recent birthday. I'm glad she did. This is a nasty, greasy mix of full-on funk, R&B, and soul ripped out by some masters in Memphis. These cats played with Isaac Hayes, Booker T and the M.G.'s, and sat in on Stax sessions. They throw down the jams live to tape and we get to listen in. If you want some music that feels like late 60s music updated for today - this is your stuff. Daddy like. Smoke up some ribs and spin this ASAP.

5 out of 5 stars The NEW Kings of Memphis!.......2004-06-16

It's awful nice when you find a record label you can trust to deliver something great or at the very least interesting. Memphis' Yellow Dog Records is just that. Home to one of the best blues artists of the last couple years Mark Lemhouse as well as The Bluff City Backsliders Yellow Dog now brings us in it's on going tradition of great AND interesting Memphis' own new instumental soulfunk masters The Bo-Keys and their new release The Royal Sessions. I would say first release but they did back up the legendary Rev.Al Green on his gorgeous return to tip-top pop form I Can't Stop. There's been some talk about the Bo-Keys using words like revival, revisionism, and the dreaded retro but that plain don't get it. Yeah, Ike Hayes begat Booker T begat The Bar-Kays begat the Bo-Keys or somethingerother and yeah, it was recorded at the amazing Willie Mitchell's Royal Studio (home to Rev. Green's classic recordings) but that's just a pinch of the spice in the recipe for this new and greasier Memphis stew and supa summer evening BBQ. This is The New Sound of Memphis baby. This is a sharp-dressed and sweatin' at midnight popped crease hangin' loose broke down no need to fix it glide in yr slide dip in yr hip stroll from uptown to straight DOWNtown freshness. I know you already read the Who's WHO on this but to refresh howsabout Skip Pitts (you know his wahwah built the Theme from Shaft)on guitar bobbin' and stingin' like a summer picnic bee. Back that up with keyboard maestro Ronnie Williams (that's him on Rufus Thomas' Do The Funky Chicken) on the B3 organ then back that up with Bar-Kays drummer Willie Hall keepin' it slapped down. Don't forget former garage band bassist and Bo-Keys band leader Scott Bomer drivin' the bottom and trumpeter Marc Franklin and sax man Jim Spake shinin' like new chrome dubs and this Caprice classic is swangin' with funky junque in the trunk to spare. Fans of the old skool Stax/Volt/Atlantic/Motown sound and fans of new soul kool bands like Mofro get yr wallets out now. The Bo-Keys are the Feel Funky hit of the summers to come!

Album Description

Laraaji started out as a comedian working in Greenwich Village clubs in the `70s when one day he impulsively traded in his guitar for a zither and began busking. Brian Eno heard his music and offered to record him. 1992's Flow Goes The Universe (his second major work)features Laraaji on vocals, zither, mbira, keyboards and percussion. Wondrously atmospheric and involving, he creates panoramas that are shimmering and dreamily effective. Flow…showcases Laraaji's ability to render mysterious environments all the more palpable, free of technological underpinnings. Produced by Michael Brook. Re-mastered, re-sequenced and featuring new artwork.

Hannibal reissued the CD without the one track that stuck out like a sore thumb anyway,"Laughing In Tongues," a throw-away pop tune that was created just so it could be programmed out. No need to do that with the new version, which supposedly was also remastered (don't hear much sonic difference; it was excellent to begin with in any case.) "Being Here" and "A Cave In England" are two of my favorite Laraaji tracks, and "Flow Goes The Universe" might be his most consistent CD.

5 out of 5 stars Andreas Scholl - English Folksongs & Lute Songs (17th Century).......2005-10-12

I love it ... very relaxing pace throughout. It's definitely a keeper I'll play it over and over.

5 out of 5 stars English perfection from the great German singer.......2000-10-09

The CD starts with Behold a Wonder Here (Dowland) and for people familiar with Emma Kirby's rendering, it's a bit of a surprise. Nothing namby-pamby about this: it suits Andreas's range perfectly and he lets go with plenty of oomph.

The unaccompanied King Henry is a showcase for his purity of tone. I doubt that other countertenors could pull this song off so well, of those one thinks of at the present time.

His expression in My Love Hath Vow'd (Campion) is very varied and playful, but it is so very much a woman's song that I found it hard to take from Andreas Scholl, albeit sung so so well. I had to imagine the composer singing with his own lute, and remind myself over and over again that the singer is quoting the woman in the song ...

The preoccupation with sorrow and death of the English composers of the period seems to amuse Andreas somewhat, when he is asked about it, but you would never know it from listening to him sing these sad songs. His steady, pure voice is like a rope drawing you right into the pain. The highlights IMHO are All Ye Whom Love or Fortune Has Betrayed and I Saw My Lady Weep. Heartbreaking.

Andreas Scholl describes himself as a singer in the English tradition - despite what others say of him and his German/Swiss musical background. In these archetypal English songs, he proves his point. It is a beautiful, beautful collection.

      4 out of 5 stars FIRST RATE!.......1999-07-10

I am not a fan of the sound of a counter-tenor. I would prefer to hear much of the same repertory sung by a mezzo, say Marilyn Horne or Rise Stevens. That said, Andreas Scholl continues to surprise me. His is not the whiny, nasal sound I associate with a counter-tenor. He has a bright, expressive voice of great passion. And this album does not disappoint. Most of the songs were new to me although I'd heard a few of them in modern arrangements for voice and guitar on other albums such as the superb "Elizabethan Lute Songs" on RCA Gold Seal sung by Sir Peter Pears accompanied by Julian Bream. Also it must be noted that Scholl's command of English is absolute. One would never imagine that English were not his first language.

      5 out of 5 stars bravo!!!.......1999-06-11

this is one of the best renaissance cds that ive ever had. it captures in the performance all the great characteristics of the renaissance art.

must pieces are simple in structure as most folk renaissance music. but the elegance, clear and total control of the interpretation of andrea scholl takes the music to another dimetion.

must of the songs are short melodies that are repited. but each repetition by scholl is made with and incredible perfection and musical conscience.

the pieces for lute solo are wanderfull and well perform.

      bravo andrea

4 out of 5 stars A voice so perfect that it is boring.......1999-04-26

This is a collection of incredibly beatuful English medieval songs, which Andreas Scholl sings with serenity so perfect that it sounds mechanical. Scholl has a vocal timbre of remarkable consistency and clarity; his voice is angelic in tone, yet somehow it fails to satisfy when more earthly emotions are called for. I couldn't help thinking that I liked these songs better when sung by others. For example, Deller and Chance recorded some of this repertory, and even though their voices are more tremulous than Scholl's, the overall expressiveness of their singing (and their more transparent masculinity) seemed far superior to Scholl's genderless and immaculate singing. Likewise, I relished much more the singing of this repertory by Paul Agnew, whose spectacular high tenor is so conducive to the exposition of the subsurface emotiveness of English early music. Perhaps, I just like the English vocal tradition better. Scholl is a Rene Jacobs pupil, so I shouldn't be surprised that he sounds a lot like his teacher: effeminate, mannered, angelic and ultimately boring.

3 out of 5 stars English is an asset and a drawback.......2004-07-20

The best thing about this recording of Carmen is the libretto. Conductor David Parry penned this facile and dramatic English translation. He avoids the pitfalls of literal translation to achieve an idiomatic flow that matches the rhythm of the original lyrics. I use this as a reference libretto for any of the French Carmens.

Unfortunately, the performance suffers from being sung in English. The singers declaim their parts with such proper British diction that Carmen comes across as a school marm. The spoken dialog is delivered beat for deliberate beat and is dripping with reverb. It makes the plaza, tavern and mountain pass all sound like a sewer pipe.

This is a good first Carmen for someone trying to understand the work. The libretto itself is a good investment for further listening. For an enjoyable performance with an emphasis on character and action, I recommend Regina Resnik on the London Double Decker set.

5 out of 5 stars You Will Love Opera After Hearing Carmen In English.......2004-02-09

What a perfect introduction to opera. This newly released recording will surely get you hooked into opera. Carmen, a French opera by Georges Bizet, is the most recognizable and most popular in the opera world. It's famous melodies- the overture, the Habanera, The Toreador Song have all been featured in everything from cellular phone ring tones to Superbowl Commercial (last year's Superbowl with The "Opera In English" label has been making Italian operas into English for a number of years now. Also on the market are Verdi's La Traviata in English (with soprano Valerie Masterson as Violetta) Handel's Julius Caesar with Janet Baker and even Wagner's epic Ring Of The Nibeling sung in English. This is a terrific recording and I highly recommend it if you want to get into opera. Listen to this version first and then try the real, original French version Bizet had written. Patricia Bardon is sensational, sexy and dramatic as Carmen.

The real strength of this version is the dynamic drama. With the advantage of being sung in English, we get better insight on characters' emotions and motives, and we understand the drama a lot better. Carmen is all about great drama. Bizet drew the plot from the French writer Prosper Merimee's dark short story. Carmen is the ultimate femme fatale- a devil-may-care, sexy Gypsy living in Spain, seduces the conservatively raised soldier Don Jose, stealing him away from his fiancee, the passive Micaela, living a life of underground smuggling and rowdy taverns. "Habanera" and "The Gypsy Song and Dance" are very expressive of Carmen's extraordinarily liberal lifestyle. Don Jose, however, has fallen deeply in love- as he shows us in his song/aria "The Flower Song". But Carmen soon becomes tired of his constancy. Don Jose wants a committed, monogamous relationship with Carmen. But Carmen will not submit to love, since she is first and foremost a carnal creature. Eventually, she falls for the handsome Toreador Escamillo. Don Jose, consumed by jealousy, stabs Carmen at a bullfight after Carmen declares her love for Escamillo and rejects Don Jose's love. Don Jose's crazed, obscessive personality shines through in the English version as well. This tragedy has been done in English before so don't think this is the first time. Back in the 50's, there was a film, starring black actors "Carmen Jones" which was treated the same way as this opera- more like an English Broadway musical and with the dubbed singing voice of Marilyn Horne as Carmen. All in all, this recording is excellent.

      5 out of 5 stars A wholly credible "Carmen" -- finally!.......2003-09-17

This recording really sells "Carmen" as a drama. Although I have two other recordings of this opera and have seen it performed several times, it never quite worked for me dramatically. But thanks to the fine performances, conducting, and translation here, I've become a "Carmen" convert. Producing a good English-language performance of a foreign opera, especially a warhorse like "Carmen," is much more difficult than it might appear. You need performers who not only can sing the parts (of course) but also can sing *English* and make it halfway intelligible and make it sound like English and make it dramatically convincing to English-speakers. The singers on this recording do an excellent job all around. Don't be put off if you don't recognize their names -- they are up to the task musically and (especially) in their acting. Admittedly, as with *all* English-language recordings, some passages are very hard to understand without reading along, but most of the time the words are clear and effective. I would recommend this recording to any opera beginner or opera lover, even those who normally turn up their noses at performances in translation.

      4 out of 5 stars I love Carmen!.......2003-08-15

I do. I can think of no other opera with more melodic inventiveness, and few others with so sure a dramatic pulse. Carmen is popular and it thrills me to say that it is also a very good opera - not always true of popular things.

And what of this recording? Carmen sits well in English, so it is good to hear in translation, although some of the detais in the text jar. Escamillo refers to Jose as "my dear", which sounds rather peculiar, and the guide's line to Micaela: "it's not exactly inviting, is it?" sounds distinctly Middle England rather than Rural Spain. Some of the performers, not least Carmen herself, make the words work, although there are long tracts, especially with the chorus, where the language is distinctly indistinct.

The soloists are, by and large, strong. Patricia Bardon's deep, Handel-friendly voice adapts well to Carmen and she colours the music with phenomenal detail, sounding sexy and provocative from the start with an edge of pride and anger that emerges as the show goes on. She is out of her depth above the stave, though, and some extra top notes in the second act don't show her off to her best advantage. I have previously said that Julian Gavin is poorly served by recordings, though here he sounds much more even and gives a thrilling and musical performance (but his wooden spoken lines let him down). Mary Plazas is a lovely Micaela, rich-voiced and sincere (and word-perfect), but Garry Magee sounds miscast as Escamillo, lacking the ballast at the bottom of the voice to do justice to this tricky role.

The supporting cast is good (Mary Hegarty seems to do nothing but Frasquita these days!) but the really treasurable thing is the conducting. Stepping out of Italian Ottocento, David Parry turns his hand to this French Comedie with an appropriate lightness of touch. His pacing and handling of the set pieces is exemplary and the enrtractes go with a real swing.

A pleasure, then, for the Carmen naive or a novelty for the Carmen-acquainted. I nearly wrote Carmen-weary - but I don't think it's possible.

I first heard of Marz a few years back. I picked up his debut Lung Fu Mo She, and liked it a lot at the time. Now when listening to it the beats sound pretty generic, and as a whole the album sounds dated. I hadn't really payed attention to him until now when I found out he had three albums I missed. Left Gorilla Pimpin alone, not too big on rock/rap. Lung Fu Mo She is definately rock/rap, and Gorilla Pimpin sounds even more so. Took a listen to TGZ Nation the Mixtape, and Against All Odds and really liked them. You can tell this time around the focus is on hip-hop, not rock. TGZ Nation has good beats, but they're not Marz's beats. The beats on Against All Odds are decent, but not high quality, although a few stand out. Marz is really improving his rapping skills, and although I feel he may never break into the mainstream, he may become a good underground rapper. He stills needs to work on, and polish his flow, as well as expand his vocabulary. Against All Odds is a good cd, entertaining listen, and if you buy it from his website it will only cost you 10 bucks. Check it out, you shouldn't be dissappointed. Thanx 4 reppin Chi-town Marz.

There isn't one track on this record I didn't love. Marz's lyrics are great and cover everything form the gangster, the inspiring and the funny. You can dance to this record, relax to it and well you know.
