Product Description
As anyone who has ever held their plums will know, most things in life are a bit of a gamble. For an artist like James Hardway though, turning an ace is a question of design rather than accident.

With Big Casino, our man has beaten the house once again, this time around with an enhanced fusion of the fusions of his previous acclaimed output. By dovetailing hybrid jazz, mesmerizing electronica, tribal percussion, dub trickery, Latin rhythms and assorted exotic and eclectic hues, Hardway has created an upbeat anthology of headphones-to-dancefloor action that stands apart by virtue of its high grade, hand-reared quality.

So while the feel is locked-in and the structures arranged to evolve in tune with the carefully measured steps of the finest house music, the unmistakable pulse of real life permeates each track... Vibrant vocals, slinky brass, riffing flutes, spiraling strings, funky keys and, of course, that all-important foundation of bass and beats are immaculately rendered on an album charged with positive energy and brimming with proper soul!!!

5 out of 5 stars Great 1930's Cuban dance band.......2006-03-30

Don Azpiazu led an exellent Cuban dance orchestra in the 1930's, and was largely responisble for influencing many other later afro-cuban jazz orchestras. Azpiazu's orchestra is tight, and peppy. They really sound great on "Peanut Vendor" and a song that sounds very similar to "When Youba plays the Rumba on the tuba". The vocals are great, the band plays exellent Cuban dance music . For those who want some pre Tito Puente Cuban orchestra music, this is what Cuban music sounded like before Puente, Machito, and thw whole Mambo, Salsa, afro Cuban jazz movement occured. This band is important historicly, even if there are not jazz solos, the music should interest those fans of 30's big bands, and swing. This is great stuff, and there are some rumba rhythms and some spicy exotic dance songs. Great 1930's Cuban American orchestra.

5 out of 5 stars First-rate Cuban dance music from the early '30s!.......2003-06-13

Delightfully corny Cuban music from the early thirties... Azpiazu's "El Manisero" ("The Peanut Vendor") was a colossal hit in 1931, and one of the earliest breakthroughs for Cuban music abroad. These songs were recorded in New York at the height of the Russ Columbo-and-Glen Gray-dominated crooner era, and bear all the goofy, loveably rinkydink musical hallmarks of the time (as well as a healthy dose of authentic Cuban rhythm). "El Manisero" features vocals by the muy fabuloso Antonio Machin, although other tracks on this CD have North Americanos who charmingly denude the music of its original bounce. Don't get me wrong: I *love* corny old music and this collection is well worth searching out.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant Eddy Duchin Music!.......2007-06-22

Although I own five Eddy Duchin CDs, this is the one I return to the most often. The selection, placement and quality of the music is superb. The clarity and richness of the remastering by Diamond Cut is remarkable, as one discovers while listening to "You Took my Breath Away", "Night and Day", "It's De-Lovely", and "Take My Heart", just a few of the wonderful 1930s songs in this album. In addition, every singer is perfectly matched to each song. If you enjoy music of this era, you also will not want to miss "Got A Date With An Angel" by Hal Kemp and "La Cumparsita" by Francisco Canaro (Asv Living Era). This timeless and uplifting music is excellent for listening and dancing. I highly recommend this CD, another brilliant gem to add to your collection!

4 out of 5 stars Not "hot," but very good dance music.......2003-04-27

Leader of one of the most well known society orchestras during a period better known for swing, Eddie Duchin catered to those who were financially well off and for whom "hot" was looked down upon as the music for the lower classes. That he was popular is evident by the vast recorded output from which Diamond Cut has reissued 21 fox trots and two recordings in the Latin mode - "Dust on the Moon" (rumba) and "Caminito" (tango) - from the mid-1930s. "How Do I Rate With You," with a growling trumpet, is about as close to "hot" as Duchin's band gets on this CD. Don't let that discourage you from investigating this recording; it's very good dance music and there's plenty of Duchin's piano featured. Most of the original source material appears to have been excellent or adequate, however, slightly worn originals must have been used for a couple tracks. Nevertheless, it shouldn't take away from the enjoyment of the music which includes many well known standards and some very nice songs which have, unfortunately, failed to endure in popularity. Despite his recorded legacy, relatively little of his output has found its way to reissue recordings, making this CD very welcome.

5 out of 5 stars Exceptional Sound Quality, Professional Transfers.......2003-03-31

This CD contains some of the earlier work done by Eddy Duchin from the 30's. The sound transfer quality is exceptional barring none. I highly recommend it as it sounds as good as it would have right out of the cutting lathe amplifiers! Nice job folks. I have collected all of the Diamond Cut CD's and love them all.

5 out of 5 stars The soundtrack to the summer of '39.......2006-06-22

You can't beat the Glenn Miller Orchestra live over the summer airwaves. This disc takes you back to a time (1939) when you'd listen to your entertainment center, a.k.a. the radio. Great atmosphere, fun verbal banter, really good sound quality and a great selection of rare and classic tunes. Marion Hutton is in excellent form. Saxophonist Tex Beneke and the underrated crooner Ray Eberle is also in fine form. There's some smokin' instrumentals too.

Enjoy!

PS: One day, I hope to see a "radio broadcasts" box set of the great Glenn Miller Orchestra 1938/1942. There is so much to choose from, it would be a shame if the major record company fails to come through. Wouldn't it be lovely to have every song included in the box set, not every performance, but every song performed over the airwaves, it could easily be well over a hundred. Why there must be at least a couple dozen versions of "In The Mood" to choose from. All the classics like you've never heard them, different arrangements, extended solos and many times the radio performances were superior. A lot of the radio broadcasts created better sound quality. Then, there are all those great numbers that were never "officially" recorded, classics like Georgia On My Mind, Hold Tight, The Jumpin Jive, Rockin Chair, When Paw Was Courtin Maw, The Jersey Bounce and list goes on and on. A real treasure is waiting for us Glenn Miller fans. But who has got the map?

5 out of 5 stars More jazz-orientated than before, but another sterlar Cd..........2004-08-06

        James hardway
is a difficult one to pin down. Just when you think you have his sound
sussed, he completely changes direction on his next album, and shatters any
preconceptions of what to expect. His earlier work on "Deeper, Wider,
Smoother, Sh@*!!", and "Easy is a Four Letter Word", which were deeply rooted
in Breakbeat/Drum n' Bass Fusion, with remarkable results. But later albums
marked changes in direction, with both "A Positive Sweat" & "Straight from
the Fridge", implementing a soul template to his breakbeat sound. "Moors +
Christians", went a step even further, and brought a Afro-centric/ Caribbean
fusion that in lesser hands, could have failed spectacularly, but remains one
of the highlights in James' discography.

And so yet again, James looks again to shift the goalposts slightly, with an
album far heavily steeped in Jazz & Afro-beat, Dub, shuffling Beats, Piano &
Latin brass. Strangely for something that featured prominent vocals on his
previous albums, the majority of the tracks here are largely instrumental, up
until track 7 (Vocal choruses are used, or sung melodies played, but their
use is subtle). So those expecting a mostly vocal-driven album, won't really
hear most of the vocal tracks until the 3/4 of the albums. But in their
place are stunning examples of experimental genre fusing that play out like
the new forms of contemporary Jazz, or Subline Broken Beat.

"Feel In Love", is a standout highlight, but settingly into a startling Cuban
Groove, and with a slip slidey Bassline and prominent melody that captures
the mood perfectly, it shows James Hardways complete understanding of beat
construction of arrangement, and marks this track out as many peoples
        favourite.

"Heart Beat" is one of those Jazz-fusion tracks that James does so well,
mixing elements of percussion with electronic sampling and deft jazz
instrumentation, & brass sections it works as a more upbeat side to jazz
music for those that have only ever considered Jazz, easy listening, and
touches upon the dancier elements of jazz.

"People Getting High" explores his recent fascination with elements of dub
sampling that were touched upon on the "Moors + Christians" album, and
further explores impressive rhythm's with some vocal sampling (courtesy of
"Ghetto Priest"), with subdued Dub bass, and some excellent guitar bass to
complement the sound, its all adds to a richly textured sound, and deserves
recognition for trying to do something a little different and succeeding.

Stylistically, this album touches on a great many musical sounds, whether it's
the acoustic guitar coupled with afro-Cuban sounds on "Rise Up" or the reggae
tinge of "Worms and Weasels" with upbeat guitar arrangements. And although
many of the tracks could well have been lifted from a great many other
influences, the mood seems to be one of a more upbeat (almost Danceable)
nature, that brim with swirling strings, assorted guitar chords, Vibrant
Cuban rhythms, with small elements of techno, tribal beats & Breakbeat
backing up the proceedings, its as eclectic an album, as Hardway has ever
        recorded.

Those following James Hardways career maybe disappointed by the lack of Drum n
Bass & Breakbeat that defined his early work. And those expecting those
albums here, would do well to hear this album before making the purchase, as
although there are still elements of breakbeat / D'n'B contained here, the
magpie approach to picking elements from other genres, has meant that there
are far less Breakbeat orientated tracks to choose from (and these are kept
at the latter half of the album).

There's a very strong Jazz / Cuban influence at work here, and, if your
familiar (or indeed like) the contemporary Jazz-fusion / Broken Beat scene,
then this is most heartily recommended, as it takes so many ideas and makes
workable tracks with them. And ignoring the fact the most of the tracks of
the first half are instrumental, because although instrumental, these tracks
are as fully realised and beautifully composed as the vocal tracks, there is
no real reason why you should pass on this album (unless of course of the
        idea of 'Jazz-fusion' & 'Cuban/Dub' doesn't appeal). More wider reaching &
experimental than his earlier albums (and therefore possibly less
accessible), but no less worthy this his sublime earlier work.

5 out of 5 stars Hello? It's another Hardway triumph...........2004-07-12

I avoid reviews. I avoid unnecessary fan enthusiasm. But, honestly, James Hardway is a brilliant innovator able to work in drum-n-bass, jazz, and world beats. His fusion is unmatched and his albums reflect different variations each time.

Big Casino is top shelf piece of work, ranking somewhere near A Positive Sweat. I've found myself collecting each studio album and you may end up doing the same...

5 out of 5 stars STILL CHOOSING THE HARDWAY!!!.......2004-07-10

James Hardway is the MAN!!! What's great about him is the fact that each album he puts out is always consistent and an adventure...taking elements of D&B, techno, jazz, dub and tribal rhythms and melding them together into a pretty amazing CD! "Big Casino" is reminiscent of his earlier material on "Easy is a Four Letter Word", "Deeper Wider Smoother $#!^" and "Straight From the Fridge." Hardway doesn't employ the sultry vocals of Amanda Ghost as featured on "Positive Sweat", however, siren E Luv steps up to the plate and does a pretty impressive job nevertheless. "Big Casino" has enough appeal to chill you out as well as get you groovin' when needed!
