Album Description
Meat Katie, AKA Mark Pember, is a ceaseless devotee of "music for music's sake." Recognized by many as one of the finest breakbeat producers currently on the scene, Meat Katie has grabbed the attention of music fans in the last few years through his production and remixes for Island UK, Kingsize, Marine Parade, Bedrock and his own label Whole 9 Yards.
On FabricLive 21, Meat Katie provides a full throttle eclectic late night dance floor mash up. Lee Coombs vocal led "Banned Practice" sets the pace as Mark weaves through the throbbing beats of Albino Allstars, attention grabbing vocals from UNKLE over Infusion's enthralling "Better World." Real ear-openers include Jem Stone & JC's "Disco Daze," Meat Katie's own grinding remix of "Salty," Vandal's unreleased track "Mad as Hell," and future breakbeat heroes Atomic Hooligan's evocative "Shine a Light" keeps the listener gripped to the very last note.
Customer Reviews:
If you like breaks..........2007-06-05
Meat Katie is a great breaks DJ. I could give it 5 stars but nothing is perfect.
Excellent breaks mix.......2006-08-19
I got this when it was released because I had just heard Lee Coombs spin "Mad As Hell" at a live show. Any cut that features Peter Finch's classic monologue from "Network" is worth the price of admission.
There are a lot of other great cuts on this CD though. The ones that stand out for me are
Banned Practice- Very 80's retro. I'm not sure who the vocal sample is from. My first guess would be Peter Murphy of Bauhaus fame, but it might be Jim Kerr of Simple Minds. Regardless, it sticks in my head until I put this CD in and play it in its entirety.
Mismoplastico- This cut sounds like it belongs on a Deep Dish compilation, except it has a breakbeat. Very nice.
Shadow Box- Great bass hook and floor tom sound. Love it.
Salty (Meat Katie Remix)- Great remix of this classic.
Mad As Hell- The reason I bought the CD in the first place. This is a perfect example of the sample carrying the song. The main groove is good, but the build section with the sample kicks. Imagine a room full of people screaming "I'm mad as hell, and I'm not gonna take it anymore!" Ironically, the effect the words had in the movie have a similar effect on the dance floor.
All in all a great CD.
Slick!.......2006-01-08
Love this CD. One of the top ten in my collection. Funky, smooth breaks, driving beats, new fresh grooves. This will keep you rollin all night. If you like this CD, also try, Deep Dish Yoshiesque, or Lee Coombs Breakfast of Champions.
I'm As Mad AS Hell And I'm not going to take it Anymore.......2005-06-20
Seriously I had just written a massive review for this CD and it was just eaten by cyber space aaahhhh! So to quote the vocal from Vandal's Mad As Hell (my favourite track on this mix) I'm as mad as hell!!!!
This mix is an absolute corker and my best buy for the year so far I have been giving it a caning and a couple of my mates that heard it went out and bought it too.
So to keep it brief standout tracks are 1 (great electro style vocal), 3, MK's rework of Better World with the Reign acapella is inspired stuff and comes off very well. Tracks 9(get ready to Testify!) and 11 are also great, I really like MK's remix of Salty much more grunt and dirt to it with a Male vocal than the original. Then followed by Vandal's Mad As Hell this track should be huge and will undoubtedly get a thrashing from other DJs at a club near you soon. I just can't help but get pumped byt the breakdown in this track.
Finally shine a light brings a fantastic mix to a fitting conclusion its structured more a song than a dance track but it works well and gives an insight to Atomic Hooligan who if you haven't heard some of their other stuff that will undoubtedly change soon with their new release out now.
This is a diverse mix of a variety of styles broken whipped and twisted into a dancefloor inspired cranking release.
Big Up's Mr Pemeber you have excelled yet again!!!
5 out of 5 !!!.......2005-05-23
For those people who appreciate Break beat this album is a must have!!!! The fines break beat album since "Eargasm" (Plump DJs) and "Stanton Sessions" (Stanton Warriors).
This album is my personal favourite alongside FabricLive 08 (Plump DJs) from the whole Fabric and FabricLive series! People who like d'n'b might also find it interesting.

Best of the chillouts.......2006-09-12
Don't waste your money on other chillouts. This is THE ONE to get: Hayling, Destiny, Edge of the Ocean, Teardrop, Street Spirit, Swollen, and others that you may or may not like... All things considered, there is no better chillout album than this.
4.5 stars. Solid Chill Compilation, Much Better than 2001.......2004-09-20
4.5 Stars... This CD is very good, and much better than the below average 2001! I recommend the entire series, expept for the original 2001 (the 2001 isn't that good). 2002, 2003, '04, and '05 are outstanding. I own all the discs from 2001 thru 05. If they can keep this up, I'll look forward to purchasing another CD ASAP!
Awesome........2003-11-19
This CD is awesome. I've had it for a year and a half now, and I still listen to it all the time.
Ace for the casual electronic fan, or chillout beginners.......2002-11-05
Right, no surprises here, just a big ol' chunk of big names and some exclusive remixes by the chillout regulars currently cashing in. All calculated for maximum appeal, of course. Brit bird Dido has her brother offer up some strings and trip-hop with "Here With Me," and it's actually quite lovely, grandiose even - matched by Coldplay's "Trouble." FC Kahuna look beyond their electro-disco tastes for "Hayling," a beeping electronic waterfall backed by that GusGus gal Sia Furler. And whatta you know, Zero 7, Bent, and Delirium all show up again.
Now, too bad about whiny Radiohead, buy your moody pals probably like that stuff, and the Dusted mix of McLachlan's "Angel" just adds unnecessary beats. So how good is Chillout 2002? Pretty ace as a gift or for the casual electronic music fan, but dance aficionados should be aware the new remixes alone (barring "Intensify") don't warrant a cash layout if you have most the other tunes.
Sexy !!!.......2002-08-24
This is the sultriest compilation I had ever owned, this is not to chill, exactly, this is to spend a special night with your loved one,I like the fact that most of the songs have a beggining and an ending and aren't seamed one to another, that makes it easier if you like to make your own compilations, also I like the alternative versions of many very common "chill" songs like "Teardrop".
The only reason I gave it only four stars is because I'm kinda tired of compilations that have "Here with me","Destiny" and "Swollen",don't get me wrong,I thing they are beautiful songs, but with all the music out there, one would think that they would stop including these songs in every compilation!!!.
All in all,a very enjoyable CD.

DJ Micro does it again.......2007-05-10
Wow. Tech Mix 5 finds its way into my CD player quite often, and its been nearly a year since I purchased. Highly recommended for anyone with even a luke-warm liking of electronica.

and Micro might replace Van Dyk as my favorite DJ!!! CD is killer, lots of props to Micro!!!
Lon Awaited Return.......2005-10-09
I waited and waited for the local music store to get this CD in. I have been following Micro since 1996. This CD brings back some amazing memories of his other Tech Mix series. Micro simply puts on a great show on this CD. If you were the least bit disappointed by his last 3 releases get this CD it will not let you down. I put this right up there with DJ Micro DJMIXEd and right up there with all the other Tech Mix Cd's. It will be one of the few CD's that doesn't get removed off my Ipod because I can not get enough of listening to it.
Tech Mix 5 Thumbs Up!.......2005-08-05
Micro knows best. A perfect blend of house, techno and trance that just keeps you asking for more...I have most of Micro's CD Mixes and though i already have a fav: OUT THROUGH THE INPUT, Tech Mix 5 is a must have! Definitely a chill out kinda mix...Starting out deep with "Flash", uplifting the mood with "the spell" (hot track!) and on and on...

Album Description
The world's most popular dance DJ meets the world's best dance brand! Louie DeVito has established himself as a force to be reckoned with in the dance world. Includes tracks by Galleon, Weekend Players, Dannii Minogue, Luna Mora and more. Slipcase. Ultra Records. 2003.
Customer Reviews:
Great for type of cd it is........2006-06-01
The problem with these cd's is that the record labels have to give people what they want (Billboard Chart Play hits) and DJ's want to play music that is popular in whatever city they're based out of. What you get here is a good mix of both. So it ends up being pretty representative of dance music circa 2003. I'm actually impressed because you get stuff like "I'm in Heaven" by Holly James was played non-stop on Groove Radio in L.A. that spring and summer yet is on virtually no other American dance compilations.
THIS WILL MAKE YOU GET UP AND DANCE!!!
<3.......2006-03-12
This was the first dance album I ever bought cuz I was unsure. This is my favorite Ultra Dance compilation!! Louie DeVito did an awesome job mixing each disc together!! My favorite songs on the album are So I Begin, I'm in Heaven, I Begin to Wonder, Simply Being Loved, Object of My Desire, Satisfaction, Appreciate Me, and As The Rush Comes. I definetely recommend buying this album, and I still listen to it all the time!!
A greatest hits of commercial dance...and a bit more.......2005-09-23
This volume truly hooks you up with the biggies, particularly the first disc. They opt for the "Dead or Alive" remix of Dannii Minogue, and you also get the hard to find Deborah Cox "Play Your Part (the gabriel & Dresden mix). Wish it had run more than 5 and a half minutes though-same with the Thunderpuss mix of Stuck. The extended version of QED's commercial trance cover of Def Leppard is here too. Disc 2 is much darker and more progressive. We really didn't need another mix of Don't Laugh by Wink. But there are some big club tracks on this disc, and several of them run from 7-8 minutes, a trend that should have begun on the first disc. Vocal lovers will most likely love the first disc, fans of more tribal dub stuff will get into disc 2, which has vocal, just not enough to really satisfy vocal lovers-although the Donna DeLory cover of Tears for Fears "the Hurting" is a must hear. Track times:
CD1
1. So I begin (5:18)
2. I'm in heaven (6:13)
3. Into the sun (5:16)

One CD was phenomenal.......2005-03-11
I had to give this CD 5 stars to offset the poor reviews of a couple people. It really deserves 4 stars but any way.
The first disc is a dance masterpiece. From 1-10 it is excellent. In a day where 2 CD sets are standard but have only about 10 good songs randomly dispersed in total, this runway of 10 in a row is reason enough to give it 4 stars. Plus if you get it here on Amazon you can get it for the price of one CD anyway. As for disc 2 I never really got into it. I guess when 1 is that good it is tough to listen to a typical lukewarm typical dj dance cd.
So if you want a guaranteed solid vocal dance techno cd, disc one is tops!
Just Nice.......2004-06-11
A good amount of Club music never hurt anyone. Well except maybe Country artists. The Ultra Dance series continues it's apparently non-stop journey into the underground life of the weekend clubber. Track selection is good. However the unnatural shift sometimes from pure Club Remixes into House Remixes sometimes doesn't go very well. It's kinda odd to mix out from Deborah Cox into a very Joey Neigro sounding Housey groove. But Louie does get his point across at least.

Customer Reviews:
Start here, or just skip it........2003-03-06
I own four of the Plastic Compilation series, & this is (to date) the most disappointing. The Fatboy Slim is both lame & pointless, the Hybrid piece never gets off the starting line, and the Tiesto remix of "Sweet Surrender" isn't up to his past work.
That said, "The All The All" (Lo Fidelity All Stars) almost carries the disc by itself, & bears repeated close listening -- and excessive dancing (ensuring that my coworkers remember I'm both insane & spastic, but wtf...).
Considering the surfeit of lousy compilation CDs in the world, this is hardly among the worst. It's worth the price, but just barely.
A solid addition to the Plastic Series.......2002-04-12
Ever since the first Plastic album, I've been snagging up the rest of the series as soon as I knew they were out. I like the level of consistency in most of the songs on each album. I'm a fan of this particular series since most artist albums and other compilations have a few good songs and the rest tends to be filler. These albums rarely contain uneven tracks. The fifth in the series meets my expectations and delivers is usual blend of great electronic music. It contains grade A techno and is very consistent. I was a little disappointed with the inclusion of the album cut of Star 69. I would have appreciated at least a remix. Still, it's a very solid, very listenable album, and it's nice to see Sarah McLachlan back. I missed her obligatory presence in the last one.
Do I have to have a title? The CD doesn't..........2001-11-06
Ok, this compilation business is really getting out of hand: this CD has only been out about 3 months and when I got it I found out I already had 3 or 4 of the cuts on other CD's! And, yes, some of the tracks are cut off (though they do it rather smoothly).
But the music's still good if you go in for this sort of trance/house stuff, though I would slightly recommend getting Trancemission 2 before Plastic 5 (both have the excellent Jan Johnston song - I can play it all day long...).
Basically Nettwerk has kept more or less true to form in this series of compilations. 3 1/2 stars -- maybe 4 (or more) if things hadn't been lopped off and the music was a bit more on the exclusive side. Are you listening Nettwerk?
My personal favorite of all the Plastic comp cds.......2001-08-08
Of the three cds I own in this series, volume 5 is my favorite. I really dg Hybrid's "Finished Symphony". The song had the melodies of classical music combined with the fast paced beats of techno. Definitely one of my very favorite tracks off the cd. I loved Way Out West's "Mindcircus". The vocals were just awesome. I already have the remix version of Sarah McLachlan's "Sweet Surrender" and Jan Johnston's "Flesh" (DJ Tiesto Mix) but no sweat off my back. Being a hater of Fatboy Slim's music, I was surprised to find myself digging his song "Star 69". That was something that I didn't expect. My other two personal favorite tracks on the cd was Dusted's "Always Remember to Respect and Honor Your Mother part 1" and Delerium's "Innocente" remixes. My one slight problem with this cd was the fact that "Innocente" remix was edited. I have the remixes to that song and the Deep Dish Gladiator mix on "Plastic 5" was butchered because on the single the verses were sung, not on this comp's version. The least the people behind this series could have done was mentioned that it was edited. Otherwise I loved volume 5.
Nice blends of the familiar with the new.......2001-08-04
Yes, a lot of these tracks are available on various compilation and mix CDs but I still enjoyed having them on one CD. Particular highlights are Maurice's "Feline", Utah Saints ethereal "Lost Vagueness" and a great Way Out West remix of BT's "Shame" I knocked the score down a bit for the inclusion of Fatboy Slim's "Star 69" which is too a pedestrial choice for an otherwise well-done compilation.

The Vocals Are What Hinder This Album.......2007-07-08
This is the first volume of Dark Drums that I've listened to. I am tracking down a lot of Steve Lawler's older releases as I love the genre of electronica that he tends to play. Picking up where Danny Tenaglia left off. Tribal House (albeit, Lawler likes the darker tones).
I was excited when I first listened to this album as the first couple of tracks were exactly what I was hoping the whole set would sound like. Unfortunately, Lawler chose to mix mostly tracks with vocals. I have no problem with vocals, but with Tribal House they can't be so overly dominating that they even drown out the all-essential drums (it is Dark Drums after all, right?)! This occurs for the majority of the remaining tracks. Couple this with the vocals' lyrics frequently being cheesy, and album becomes much less enjoyable for this reviewer despite its excellent tribal drum loops.
3.5/5 stars
Just Buy This Album..........2007-06-28
...forget the negative comments... Do you like DARK PROGRESSIVE TRIBAL HOUSE? Then, this CD is for you. Steve Lawler is by far the BEST DJ in this realm of house music. Other Lawler CD's to consider: Dark Drums Vol. 1 - Lights Out 1 - Lights Out 2 - Lights Out 3 - GU 3 NuBreed: Steve Lawler - Viva - Homelands - Home
...anticipating the return of "Lights Out (4)"
emotional roller coaster.......2006-03-29
I bought this off of amazon and the first listen was downright terrible so i put it up and did not touch it for a month, i just wrote it off as another cd i wish i could have listened to before i bought it. A month went by and same result.
One day i was messin' 'round with my cd tables and i was listening to some funky azz breaks and i decided to mix some house on top of it so i picked this one to add another layer of funkieness because i remembered this to be drum heavy........and......oh......my....God!!!!! I discovered the hidden treasure that i call this cd. I dont know what it was the breaks with it or what but it just 'clicked'. This cd is noww in my heavy rotation and it is like 4-5 years old. If you dont like this after a few listens just put it away and forget about it for a month or so and try picking it up in a diferent mindset.
I am 'VERY' picky and i now call this purchase a success. It is not quite as Dark and the title would suggest, it has some.....
....dare i say 'fun' moments.
Not everyone can throw trumpets into a mix..........2004-10-20
...and have it sound so good.
I had a copy of this CD for a long time and tried several times to listen to it. With nothing but drums for the first few minutes I never listened beyond. Comfortable with some other DJs, this sounded dull. After a while, I was looking for something new and put this on during a long drive. Oh my...
The drums that open the mix are there to get you into the groove. It builds and builds and reels you in. Right around thirteen minutes or so in Mr. Lawler drops a wicked bass line and the party begins. From this point on, he drops in more and more, tossing in some vocals here, some sound effects here, finally ending with some trumpets, all with some funky drumming that isn't that monotonous 98 BPM that carries many mixes (and gives you a headache after a while).
I don't know much about the styles and all the various kinds of electronica that purists seem to get off on, I just know what sounds good. And this sounds gooood. I hesitate at the fifth star because it just didn't have that something that makes me go wild for a mix. But it's almost there. Not being able to see any of these DJs live in the heart of the Midwest in the U.S., CDs and such are all we get. I'm hunting down his other stuff as we speak.
A good break from the hodgepodge of mixes out there.
dark, sexy, and tribal!!!.......2004-02-09
Dark and tribal trance/techno like only Steve Lawler can deliver!! A solid cd with great bass and driving beats that keep you interested. Often you see artists have a few good songs but can't be consistent, not Lawler. He consistently brings only the best. Deep dark flow without flaw. Also other great Lawler cds "Nubreed" and lights out vol.1. If you like tribal sound and "DARK" beats grab this cd!!!

Jack Dangers, musician and programmer behind the immensely influential Meat Beat Manifesto, has created a captivating and moody cauldron of sound on Variaciones Espectrales. Its signature is Dangers's remarkable knack for mixing unlikely sonic components into a beguiling whole. "No Secrets No Surprises" and "Zxero" feature busy drums, robotic bass lines, bold synthesizer whoops, and arcane sound fragments, while the syncopated drum patterns on "Short Heavies" make it unpredictable and eerie. "3:00 min" is another intriguing combination of sonic elements, including subdued vocals, saxophones, and the jazzy drum sounds that have always characterized Meat Beat Manifesto's "live" feel. The album is also rich in atmosphere. "Nano" and the aptly titled "Echo in Space" are airy and mesmerizing, yet riddled with raunchy percussion. In all, Dangers mangles the disc brilliantly with insouciant sound effects and intense processing. --Mark McCleerey

Nice Danger-ous Work.......2005-05-22
Any fans of Meat Beat's "RUOK" release out there? If so, this is a definite for your collection-- it serves as a transition from earlier musics by Dangers to "RUOK". Although the album is only about 30 minutes long, some of the pieces are very strong, and all are, at the very least, interesting. A standout quality all of the songs share is a wonderful, almost obsessive attention to electronic sounds / noises. These sounds whirl, pound, twinkle and evolve without ceasing. A good thing? You bet!
the mad audio scientist does it again.......2004-10-31
Right from the get-go you know your in for a personnel treat from JD. ITs headphone music at its best. This isn't anything like meat beat or "Hello Friends". This is Jack hard at work in his studio, or lab, which one, its doesnt matter.
"Zxero" is my personnel favorite as it really gives the vision of jack tweaking electronic music in the "lab coat" vision i think he'd intended.
Pick this up, you wont be dissapointed. can't compare it to anything else
Blender Bender.......2002-11-04
I like this CD quite a bit. Jack Dangers has a very good ear for microtonalities, and these recordings show it off very well. There is an exquisite and deliberate use of sound and effect processing for each track, like the pieces of a puzzle being blended together. The material is very much like the Eccentic Object EP and it would be nice if additional works of this genre were released on CD.
More from the best........2002-07-01
Yet another Jack Dangers project. Man, does the guy ever quit? Similar in style to the Eccentric Objects EP(limited availability from Sputnik7.com) and some of the Tino's Breaks series, Jack delivers yet another quality release. "No Secrets, No Surprises" sounds like it could have been on Subliminal Sanwich. "Echoes in Space" goes into Autechre/Aphex Twin territory, but with Jack's unique twist, of course. Worth the bread. A must for the Jack Dangers completest.
BTW, if you don't have one, get a boomin' system for your ride. Then listen to your old Meat Beat Manifesto CD's and other jams while cruising.

Album Description
Despite the confusing alias Meat Katie is actually a man, and in particular a man named Mark Pember from Kingston (Surrey, UK). He also happens to be one the most influential DJs and producers of the last ten years when it comes to dance music.
The first of the Meat Katie output was released on Kingsize Records and was (and still is) the perfect combination of Pember's dual loves, house and breakbeat. His house music contains the rough, gritty elements of breakbeat while his breakbeat takes the grooves and hypnotic vibe of house music. It doesn't stop there, though, with Mark also taking cues from electro and techno too.
With two UK albums ("Off The Bone" and "Long To Belong") and over 11 singles on Kingsize as well as releases on Mantra, Saw and Bedrock receiving plaudits from DJs, Press and fans whatever their genre bias, Pember has been credited with opening up the previously insular breaks scene with his unique brand of "tech-funk".
A love of collaborative work has seen Pember work with Arthur Baker, Justin Drake (Peace Division), Dylan Rhymes, Elite Force, Roland Clarke, Aquasky, Holly Golightly and Kurt Wagner among others while his magical touch with remixes has graced the likes of Deep Dish, Stefan K, Unkle, Serge Santiago and Phil Kieran over the years.
Pember's third artist album `Vibrator' is released in the USA on Moist Music/Adrift Records. A mix of breaks, house, electro and techno it is a true reflection of his Dj style. The album features collaborations from artists including D Ramirez, Katherine Ellis, Aquasky, Jono Fernandez & Elite Force.
