Imagine a loose consortium of musicians who combine the lilting melodies of the Zombies with the driving hooks of the Kinks. Sure, it's what all the kids are doing these days, but Vancouver's New Pornographers are one of the few--along with the Shins--to get the balance right. Their third full-length offers more of the same smart power-pop that made Mass Romantic and Electric Version instant classics, plus some surprising new moves. As singer/songwriter Carl Newman (The Slow Wonder) has noted, "You can't play ebow without sounding like Eno," and indeed, Brian Eno's sublime early recordings are evoked on this more introspective offering. There are also strong new vocalists joining Neko Case: Nora O'Connor (the Blacks) and Newman's piano-playing niece, Kathryn Calder. If there was a flaw with previous efforts, it was that the contributions of Dan Bejar (Destroyer), fine as they were, sounded somewhat out of place. Just as they're better integrated this time around, Twin Cinema offers every member of this insanely talented ensemble the chance to shine. --Kathleen C. Fennessy
Album Description
The third album from Vancouver's pop maestros continues to feature Neko Case and Dan Bejar (Destroyer), as well as new vocalists Kathryn Calder and Nora O'Connor. These songs veer more toward the rocking and the personal than the sugar of earlier works. Chief singer/songwriter A.C. Newman has absorbed not just the mechanics of classic songwriting, but the heart, while indulging his admiration of demented current bands like Fiery Furnaces and Frog Eyes. Expect to hear influences from The Moody Blues, Tubeway Army, Wings, Eno, The Stranglers, 10cc, and other greats, all filtered through Newman's warped worldview.

Pure Pop Perfection.......2007-07-13
Absolutely the best cd Ive heard in years for pure musical craftsmanship. The hooks are relentless and come at a blistering pace... initially they seem overdone and in-your-face, but after a few listens everything just clicks. I'll be the first to admit it took a couple listens to get into at first, but now this cd is like an addiction. I just have to listen, its no longer optional. The songs, and the album as a whole, just fit together perfectly. Its not often that I discover a cd thats so good that I feel compelled to write an online review (This is only my 2nd or 3rd Amazon review).
Neko Case is the icing on the cake, Im a huge fan of her solo work, and her contribution here makes the songs that much better. Do yourself a favor, pick up this cd and give it a few spins. Soon you wont be able to remove it from your cd player. And check out Neko Case's "Blacklisted" cd, the style is completely different from NP, but you'll be glad you did.
It takes more time to appreciate this one.......2007-06-12
When I first got my hands on this hotly anticipated 3rd release from the NP's it didn't "hit" me like the first two. After a year of low rotation in my collection I'm now listening to it over headphones and it's just now striking me what a great disc this is. It's as good as their other discs and in a lot of ways even better. The Bleeding Heart Show is such a great tune. Don't give up on this one right away. Put it away for a month or two if you don't get it right away and then pull it back out on a rainy day and give it another try - you'll get it.
Not my cup of tea.......2007-05-29
I guess it all depends on the type of music you like. I was drawn to The New Pornographers through Neko Case, and sad to say was dissapointed by the band. Not that they aren't a supremely talented band, but the droning voice of A.C. Newman wears thin on me, as is the case with Colin Meloy of The Decembrists. In fact, the two bands sound a lot alike, but Meloy brings a deeper literary flavor to his music that makes the songs much more enjoyable to listen to, at least for me. I much prefer Neko Case in her own element, singing her reverb-heavy folk ballads with a voice hauntingly familiar to Patsy Cline.
So far above the fray it's almost unfair.......2007-05-16
If CDs ever become extinct and scientists need to extract their DNA thousands of years from now to recreate them (a la Jurassic Park), "Twin Cinema," the perfect pop-rock concoction, had better be the disc they use. My question is, who says heavy electric guitars are mandatory to make the perfect rock record? The New Pornographers prove that several great singers, some piano, unique songwriting and a penchant for the perfect pop melodies from song to song will carry a band just fine. Of course, the lush, bountiful quality to these songs qualifies them as more than mere pop tunes. Calling these songs pop is doing them a disservice.
The opposite of stodgy would be upbeat, and that's what "Twin Cinema" is, even on the slower tunes, which have a tendancy to transform to livelier jingles by the end. The title track begins the CD like a blast of fresh-air power pop, a feature many of these songs share. Yet the New Pornographers seemed to create this album with the knowledge that people like to download songs that suit their individual tastes these days. Thus, there is a diverse feel to the record, almost as if more than one band was involved in making it. The album is fluent throughout, yet diverse and creative enough to keep you on your toes. "Twin Cinema" never feels dull, because the tunes take unique turns every step of the way. The snappy songs are enhanced by crisp production, quirky lyrics and superb drumming, which might get a little lost amid all the ultra-catchy sounds.
Neko Case has the best female vocals in rock. Such songs as "The Bones of an Idol" and "These are the Fables" are nothing less than elegantly beautiful. "Broken Breads" sounds like Syd Barrett (see The Madcap Laughs) performing a tune in 2005. The vibrating guitars on "Three of Four" is pure swank, reminiscent of a few songs on R.E.M.'s Monster from 1994. The chorus on "Star Bodies" has the lushest-ever vocals by Case (double-tracked), for a sound that is irresistable. Finally, "Stacked Crooked," the last song, has the defiant sound of redemption, looking forward with a sense of hope and positivity, despite the screw-ups of the past: "Stacked crooked all along but now I'm on my way."
Who knows where the New Pornographers will take it from here, but it's hard to imagine they will ever top the brilliance of this album.
New To The Indie World And Love This Recording.......2007-03-29
I started surfing around on Amazon about 4 months ago and discovered this recording. To preface, I have a very diverse music background and like everything from Miles Davis to Led Zeppelin to Neil Young to the Minutemen to the Grateful Dead to the Sex Pistols, etc.
This recording is so unique that I've listened to at least parts of it almost daily since I bought it 2 months ago. Very diverse range of sound, great lyrics, and very well produced. I highly, highly recommend it.

An Amazon.ca Canadian Essential
The debut of this Vancouver indie supergroup led by Zumpano's Carl Newman sent critics scrambling to the early '80s and mid '60s for power-pop forebears, and it sent everyone else bouncing down the street and shouting out car windows. In a happily urgent record full of tight harmonies and cryptic storytelling, the high point undeniably remains the great single "Letter from an Occupant," which rides Neko Case's country-crooner voice nearly off the rails. --Tom Nissley

Muddled at times, but still shows talent.......2007-05-30
"Mass Romantic" took a while to grow on me, and frankly, not all of the songs ever completely won me over. The first few tunes, mind you, are very promising. The bouncy title track, sung awesomely by Neko Case, is irresistible. Following that, "The Fake Headlines" has an earthier sound and lush vocals during the chorus ("Make headlines/Believe them/Come back"); in case you're new to this band, big sweeping vocals are a great characteristic of NP's music. "The Slow Descent Into Alcoholism" is also a great jangly pop tune, and Case's background vocals on it are a thing of beauty. The crunchy guitar and vocals on the rocker "Mystery Hours" has elements of the great M's from Chicago (see Future Women), but "descent" might be an apt term to describe the middle and latter portion of this CD, which, despite some good pop sounds, can be a little grating, dull and too amped-up at times. Also, the vocals on some of these songs are a bit overwrought and meshed, unlike on Twin Cinema, where they flowed better, sounded better and the singers in the band seemed to get his or her own song.
With their experimentation in sound, twists and turns within compositions and Brit-like pop leanings, NP also share musical characteristics of early Blur (see Modern Life Is Rubbish). And like early Blur, "Mass Romantic" is good but spotty in parts. Plus, it's hard not to compare anything this band does with "Twin Cinema," a classic and brilliant album that would be hard for any band to top. For a debut CD, though, this one is a good, if muddled, start. It's an album that wants to be great -- has the potential to be great -- but just doesn't quite get there.
A Real Upbeat Indie Album.......2007-05-23
This is the my first New Pornographers album and so far I am loving it. It's got the usual indie sort of sound but it's very upbeat and has great energy.
Pretty good.......2007-05-14
After listening to The Electric Version, I was hoping this one would be as good. It's not, but then again, that's a lot to live up to. This album is pretty good, but nothing spectacular.
Amazing cd.......2007-03-25
This cd was introduced to me by a good friend. Probably one of the greatest cds ive ever heard in my life. Nekko Case is one of the greatest singers ive ever heard. There is not a weak track on the whole cd. Its a perfect cd for summer time or anytime for that matter. Id recommend picking this up.
This band just keeps getting better.......2006-10-08
How funny, I bought The New Pornographers newest album Twin Cinema first and was immediately hooked and amazed by that sublime cd. So I plunked down my money for their debut album Mass Romantic thinking I'd get more of the same and was underwhelmed. It didn't hit me right off, so I put it away for a while and have since come back to it. While it's not as immediately powerful as Twin Cinema, it's really grown on me and is a very good album in its own right. Mass Romantic is punchy, emotional with a wonderful sense for mining the best of rocks past such as the Beach Boys and The Who while maintaining it's own character. It's structurally simpler, less original and not as well-recorded as Twin Cinema, yet there's a lot to like about this cd. For one thing the wonderful singing and melodies. I find it rewards repeated listenings and is well worth picking up.

The New Pornographers' debut album was the stuff of legend, a near-perfect collection of catchy songs filled with lush sonics, anthemic sing-alongs, and retro pop hooks. Seemingly out of nowhere, the band--featuring Zumpano's Carl Newman, Destroyer's Dan Bejar, and alt-country goddess Neko Case--forged a power pop masterpiece. Electric Version is, thankfully, not all that different. For its 45 minutes, the album never eases up on its great influences; you're treated to a baker's dozen of memorable tunes that harken to prog-rock, New Wave, and the British Invasion. The lyrics are goofy, the production fills your stereo (like the best, most upbeat tracks by Wilco or the Flaming Lips), and the alternating vocalists keep things fresh. The songs only get better as the album progresses; "Chump Change," "Ballad of a Comeback Kid,"and "July Jones" are three that standout. Somehow this indie supergroup is making classic rock ... today. --Jason Verlinde
Album Description
This is the second album from Vancouver's supergroup, featuring Carl Newman (Zumpano), Neko Case, Dan Bejar (Destroyer), & other local luminaries in a joyful cascade of slightly jaundiced power pop songs that'll knock your socks off. The hooks are huge & the wit & songwriting are off the map. 'Forty staggeringly catchy minutes of four-part harmonies & Wall of Sound production, exploding with energy & joy' - Rolling Stone. Matador. 2003.

Non-stop fun.......2006-02-23
This album is simply non-stop fun. I can't stop listening. It's catchy goodness will surely rope you in.
A great album by an enormously talented band.......2006-02-20
The second album by the greatest band ever to hail from Vancouver is another winner. I have no idea why they aren't among the biggest names in music. They are well known, but they should be huge. Every song on the disc just ripples with talent and musical intelligence. This is without question some of the most energetic, brilliant, and passionate music in indie rock.
All of the members of the band are involved in other musical projects or have solo careers of their own (co-lead vocalist Neko Case, for instance, here in Chicago, where she has moved). Perhaps because of that or perhaps because they refuse to release anything that isn't utterly outstanding, they have managed to release only three albums in their eight years of existence. But though their releases are few, they make up for it by being close to perfect. There truly is not a bad cut on this album. Even the weakest cuts have numerous interesting moments, while the strongest cuts are so great they can send bolts of joy through your system. When you hear a song like "The Laws Have Changed" you can easily convince yourself that you haven't heard many better songs in your life. And then when you hear "It's Only Divine Right" you know it can't be true since it is at least as good.
This is a tight, tight band and every song bristles with wonderful musical touches. Because all the members are such seasoned professionals, they obviously know how to add just the right touch to properly embellish a song without weighing it down. And everyone in the band is so outstanding at what they do it is hard to single a single member out for praise. Nonetheless, I have to hand out kudos to two members. Carl Newman, more or less the leader of the band, has on all their albums managed to generate a fabulous set of songs. However, I wish he would give up singing lead on so many songs. Why? Because Neko Case is just a stunning vocalist. Every time she takes over the lead vocals I get a bit of a charge running down my spine. She has a marvelously nonchalant nasal voice and just seems to toss the lyrics almost without effort, as opposed to Newman, who while competent always seems to be working. Perhaps it is Case's non-Vancouver residence that keeps her from assuming more of the vocals, but if she were to do all the singing, this band would be almost impossibly great.
The great news for anyone who loves this album is that the band has two other albums that are at least as good as this one, perhaps even better. All three are must-own albums. So if you don't know these guys, go out immediately and get familiar with them. They are easily one of the best bands in the world.
Electric Version.......2006-01-20
This album was released three years after the New Pornographers awesome debut album. This album is similar, but has a more glossy feel than the previous album. The album is definately more polished. Great synths and percussion throughout the album. Electric Version is an enjoyable and easy listen, chock-full of hungry hooks and brimming with indie rock's classic humility.
Who was I fooling?.......2006-01-13
I honestly thought at first that this album wasn't nearly as good as Mass Romantic, but I don't know what I was thinking. Once again, those chill inducing pop hooks rocket their ways up and down my spine. I don't think anybody else can do it to me like The New Pornographers do. Carl Newman makes writing a perfect pop song seem easy. Listening to The Laws Have Changed is like injecting pure bliss right into your brain. Wow!
"Electric Version".......2005-09-23
Incredible album... kind of like The Shins, but in a shiny radio rather than a broken down, old one with only one knob. Not that I don't love The Shins mind you, but this album is different. BUY IT!!! Tracks 2-5 are all perfect and the rest is REAL GOOD!

Here's a band everyone can love. They've drawn comparisons to Cheap Trick, the Kinks, Phil Spector, and just about every great pop ensemble with infectious hooks and a rock edge. But the New Pornographers, the indie supergroup of Vancouverites past and present (Carl Newman (Zumpano), Dan Bejar (Destroyer), Neko Case, and well-connected friends) quite simply craft pop tunes smarter than any other indie band out there. It's a guitar-based record, but the harmonies somehow stick out, as do the keyboards, gongs, synths, and tons of little aural do-dads that never let up. The lyrics probably have good content, but who cares? You'll be too busy singing along to care. There's a new wave tint to "Jackie"; Case's wailing on "Letter from an Occupant" makes you completely forget her alt-country day job; "To Wild Homes" has an overblown, weird prog-rock feel; and the anthemic "Breakin' the Law" ends with a chorus of kids joining in on the fun. Any way you look at it, this is one hell of a debut. --Jason Verlinde
Customer Reviews:
Brilliant Pop.......2003-07-23
This is a brilliant CD through & through. Great pop songs - some of the best crafted, ever. If you are a fan of well-written, well-played, well-sung indie pop, then this is an album you have to have in your collection. I'd heard of Neko Case before, but I was never a fan of her alt-country thing, but with The New Pornographers, I'd rate her right up there with the likes of Deborah Harry or Belinda Carlisle (which is actually a compliment for those connoisseurs of 80's New Wave).
The album as a whole is genius because each song works well together, but at the same time could easily be from different artists. It's a tricky thing to come by; Shudder To Think is the only other band I can think of that pulls it off well.
"Letter From An Occupant" is the stand-out song on the album, in my opinion, but all the songs are catchy. Sure, it can be a little sugary & jingle-jangle guitar isn't for every one, but for fans of pop (especially the variety of mid-to-late 80's indie pop) every song is a winner.
a forgettable stinker.......2003-06-14
I think this CD was on my recommendations list. That will teach me to buy something without listening to it first. Ugh.
I've been playing this disc on repeat and so far I can't remember a single tune. Forgettable, jangly, guitar-pop; nothing-special vocals; and repetitive rhythms doom this effort to the used bin. Do they really expect me to care about anything they're singing about? "Mass Romantic" epitomizes banality.
Did I say the vocals where nothing special? Actually, some of the singing is downright terrible. Do yourself a favor and listen to this on the internet before repeating my mistake.
Buy yourself some old WEDDING PRESENT CD's...not the same, but infinitely better. This CD totally rots.
rated # 9 on pitchforkmedia's top 20 of '01.......2003-03-16
If the music of Vancouver's best and brightest had made its way to the ears of Jimmy Swaggart, the Christian televangelist would never have dubbed music "the "new pornography." Instead, he might have said something like, "Not a letter from an occupa-a-a-ant! Woo-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-wee-ooh-ooh-ooh-wee-ooh-ooh!" Mass Romantic is a direct challenge to those who would dare to suggest that good pop music is thing of the past. Energetic, smooth, and masterfully executed, Mass Romantic is the catchiest thing to come out in ages. And the unique combination of Carl Newman's Brian Wilson-esque arrangements, Neko Case's powerful wail, and Dan Bejar's unique, off-kilter songwriting make it the first great straightforward pop record of the new century. Mass Romantic is one of those rare albums that's easy to sing along to, but impossible to sing along to well. --Matt LeMay
Alternative power pop with melody--just a fantastic album.......2003-02-14
The New Pornographers make the kind of music you thought no one made anymore. A rare balance of noise and melody, full of alternative energy, pop hooks, crunching guitars, lo-fi keyboards, and hyperactive drums. The songs have great titles like "The Slow Descent into Alcoholism" and "Centre for Holy Wars". The lyrics are nonsensical in a They Might Be Giants way, with throwaway gems like "the bruises on my legs from kicking pills" and "Visualize success, but don't believe your eyes". At any time, a song may stop for a sing-along on a repeated line like "Salvation whole-life central" or "Hope grows greener than grass stains". "Letter from an Occupant" is one of the greatest singles you've never heard (it did show up in the movie "Serendipity"), with alt-country singer Neko Case providing a wailing vocal. Other highlights include "Mass Romantic", "The Slow Descent into Alcoholism", "The Body Says No", and "Centre for Holy Wars", and there's nothing remotely close to a bad song on the CD. It's one of those albums that you thank your lucky stars that you somehow found out it existed.
(1=poor 2=mediocre 3=pretty good 4=very good 5=phenomenal)
Where've all sensations gone?.......2003-01-27
This is not only one of the best albums the 2000's has yet produced, but quite simply one of the most infectiously brilliant (or brilliantly infectious--whichever you prefer) pop-rock albums ever recorded. Every single song on this record is an absolute gem, in particular the Neko Case-fronted numbers (the title track and the album's highlight, "Letter from an Occupant"). Also recommended (but decidedly not in the same vein): Neko's The Virginian, Furnace Room Lullaby, and Blacklisted, all of which are terrific.

Product Description
The band's name stems from the combined electrical output of two human bodies. Though happy to be framed against such a luminous backdrop, the members of 12 Volt Sex prefer to be judged on their own terms. What started out as a few simple songwriting sessions for vocalist Matthew Gucu and guitarist Michael Stratton quickly became the perfect recipe for creating inerrant and edgy pop with the addition of bassist Jason Coleman and drummer Gary Wright. Don't know how to describe it.......2006-10-31
Fans will know what I mean by this.
It's somewhere between punk, industrial, electronic, emo, indie, and of course, completely original components.
It's a true listening experience. This is for anyone who is sick & tired of the bland music that passes for "alternative" these days, and want to try some more edgy stuff.
I give it 4.5 out of 5 stars (because the recorded version doesn't measure up to the live experience).
