When Wagner set the Ring to music, he intended the orchestra to act in the fashion of a chorus from a classic Greek tragedy--setting the mood and commenting on the action. In order to allow a nonverbal musical line to reflect on the plot, Wagner developed a psychologically and musically complex symbology to communicate his thoughts to the listener. From the beginning the Ring has spawned numerous written commentaries on the relationships of the motif structure, but by using examples from the Decca Ring recording, Deryck Cooke's thoughtful spoken commentary is by far the most accessible guide for either the fledgling Ring enthusiast or the seasoned veteran. --Christian C. Rix

4 out of 5 stars Ring introduction critique.......2006-11-04

This is very worthwhile, at the same time it requires time, patience and attention, but it does provide some keys to better enjoyment of a sensational piece of music.

5 out of 5 stars FASCINATING STUDY FOR NOVICES AND AFFICIONADOS ALIKE.......2006-08-16

This may look an intimidating, daunting and dull prospect - a 2+ hour lecture on the motifs in the Ring. Don't be put off. Whether you're a relative novice to the Ring and want to find out what it's all about, more experienced with a desire to understand the composer's methods better or an afficionado who thinks he knows it all inside out, there is great pleasure as well as elucidation to be had from this set. Originally made to accompany the Decca Solti Ring, it contains a multitude of musical illustrations taken from those recordings as well as some specially recorded by Solti just for this Introduction.

It wasn't the first time this has been tried. The famous HMV sets from the late 20's also included recorded examples of over 100 motifs. (These, by the way, are available as part of the Pearl reissue of those wonderful HMV recordings). What that set lacked was the wonderful insights as well as the approachability of the talk by Deryck Cooke. Cooke was a great and much missed musicologist - a Mahler expert responsible for the performing edition of the Tenth Symphony still most played today, a fascinating explorer into the nature of music's basic building-blocks in his excellent book, The Language of Music, and an inspiring and elucidating critic of Wagner's work as shown by the fascinating book he left unfinished at his death, I Saw the World End.

On these CDs he does much more than list the leitmotifs and identify them as calling-cards. He shows the amazingly integrated and organic growth of the musical material that Wagner uses throughout his vast work. He demonstrates how motifs can change their sense and meaning as they evolve through the drama. And he shows how the complex combinations of motifs can radically advance both the musical and the dramatic narrative of the piece. There are even places where he corrects the misinterpretation of some of the motifs that had become ingrained from early commentators' false labels.

This set should engage and enlighten anyone with an interest in Wagner's huge and inexhaustible tetralogy. Do give it a try - no matter how far down the road to Wagnerianism you are.

4 out of 5 stars Welcome back to a classic analysis.......2006-05-28

Deryck Cooke's lecture series upon THE RING is almost as much a classic by now as the Solti RING cycle, with which it was originally issued on LP, and from which it derives its musical examples. The difference is that whereas the Solti RING has been continuously in print ever since it was completed, and was among the first opera sets to benefit from the CD revolution, the Cooke analysis was for long almost totally unobtainable. Now we have it back. It should be welcomed: it is a classic. Cooke's mellow, deep voice with the hint of a Celtic burr - which made him ideal on BBC radio - patiently explains Wagner's melodic, rhythmic, and harmonic metamorphoses to such good effect that if you own this recording, you really require no other RING analysis. (A pity about the abrupt beginnings and endings of too many vocal and orchestral illustrations, though.) Musicology lost a fine, sensitive thinker with Cooke's premature death in 1976.

If all you want is dilettantish baby food, there are plenty of dumbed-down Wagner commentaries on the market, stretching from Anna Russell's famous monologue (which doesn't pretend to be anything other than a parody aimed at morons) to the latest standard-issue "Wagner-was-a-Nazi-boo-hiss" feuilleton (which, unfortunately, does). Without reasonable score-reading skill you will find Cooke useless, however diligently you have ploughed through Marx, Jung, Freud, or other gurus purportedly relevant to THE RING. Cooke expects you to use your brains and your musical sense. Quelle horreur. At today's BBC his "elitism" would render him unemployable.

5 out of 5 stars Essential for Understanding Wagner's Ring Cycle.......2006-05-15

I originally bought this set on vinyl in the early 70s when I discovered the Ring in college. I studied the records and booklet assiduously, and after about three run-throughs I finally started getting it. Wow! Thirty-five years later, I still remember Mr. Cooke's analyses of various motive families, and I don't know how I could have mastered and loved the Ring without him. I now own this set on CD and listen again on the rare occasion of attending a Ring performance. My wife calls me a "Ring nut," but of course I'm nuts about many other things as well.

Bottom line, buy this set and study it if the Ring has captivated you as it has countless others. The presentation is dry, but sticking with it brings measureless and longlasting rewards.

4 out of 5 stars Very Functional.......2006-03-19

This CD set is excellent for what it sets out to do: present the leitmotives of the Ring according to their relationship to one another and their role in developing both characters and plotlines. Deryck Cooke's lectures on each motive are very insightful, very helpful at cueing the listener into the semantic aspect of Wagner's orchestral writing. The one drawback is that the musical examples are a bit jarring. Without fade-ins or -outs, the engineering is quite barbaric. And though the orchestra was, I believe, conducted by Solti, and is beautifully done, the vocal performances can be quite unpleasant. Point being: this is not background music, but in accomplishing what it sets out to do, it is very successful, and I don't know of anything else like it.

1 out of 5 stars Robotic and Science Fiction Movie Soundtrack.......2005-11-05

This cd contained some bad music overall but some of the really good ones were excellent. So I guess I wouldnt recommend anyone to buy this CD.

1 out of 5 stars IT STINKS.......2004-10-13

Disco sci-fi?? They got to be kidding. Stay away from this mess. The 1 star rating is false. It's the only way I could get this thru. It's really a big ZERO.

4 out of 5 stars Cool variation of the themes........1999-07-13

These are some of the best science fiction movie themes thrown onto one CD. The music is changed into a more jazzy, futuristic tone. Some of the songs suck, but it is an overall good CD.

2 out of 5 stars Too synthetic!.......1999-04-14

This is actually a re-release of a CD that originally offered several more tracks, including "The Twilight Zone" and a jazzy variation on "2001."

This version offers no substitutes for the missing tracks, and the new arrangements of the surviving tunes are lifeless interpretations pumped out of a sytnthesized orchestra.

The kiddies might like the upbeat tempos, though.

Caveat emptor!

5 out of 5 stars The stars come out in Japan.......2000-08-05

In 1983, Norman Granz took Jazz At The Philharmonic on the road one last time to commemorate his first Japanese tour in 1953. Originally a 3 LP set and now reissued on 2 CD's, "Return To Happiness" documents an evening at Tokyo's Yoyogi National Stadium, with a great lineup featuring players like Zoot Sims, Oscar Peterson and Clark Terry.

Among the highlights is a 33 minute ballad medley with two tunes a piece by each of the hornmen. Particularly noteworthy: Harry "Sweets" Edison on "Ain't Misbehavin", J.J. Johnson on "Misty", and Clark Terry on "When Lights Are Low". To close out disc 1, the all stars jam on "Spotlite" a tune where the melody incorporates a bit of "Woody n You" is a showcase for a grandiose, bombastic drum solo by Louie Bellson, using his signature double kick drum to great effect.

What follows is a 6 song mini set of the highest quality (the remaining five on disc 2) by the Oscar Peterson Quartet featuring Joe Pass, Niels Henning Orsted Pedersen, and drummer Martin Drew. In what is excellent mainstream music highlights include a greasy "Peace", a tune acknowledging then imprisoned Nelson Mandela, Joe Pass on "Wonderland" and a frenetic "Missisauga Rattler". Ella Fitzgerald and her quartet are up after Peterson, and while Ella's prime years had passed, she sings with emotion, fun, and joy on such numbers as "Willow Weep For Me", a scat workout on "Manteca", and a swinging "All of Me".

The evening closes with a jam featuring Ella and the band on Lionel Hampton's "Flying Home" which the very appreciative Japanese audience enjoys. (notice their thunderous applause during Oscar and Ella's sets respectively) Overall, this is an excellent final document of JATP's final years that any fan of jam sessions and Pablo records' all star summits should check out.

    4 out of 5 stars 80's in the mix.......2003-08-08

This is a double set CD of 80's hits remixed for today's club goers. While few if any original artists sing on this set the remixes are nevertheless quite good and really give that extra punch to get up and onto the dance floor. There are some interesting mixes here one being "Self Control" which contains rapping intertwined with the original song. Its quite the toe tapper. Another great body mover is "Give me Tonight" I personally go crazy when it comes on; really getting into the rhythm and letting go. "Riddle" "Happy Station" "Don't break my heart" and "Johnny B" are a few more stand out tracks. The only true clunker on this set is track 1 "Like a Prayer" Madonna would cringe if she heard it. The woman who sings it injects no passion into the lyrics. However once its over and the other songs begin you will not regret buying this set. Highly recommended for dance fans and fans of the 80's.

The commercial success of the Rachmaninoff disc A Window in Time defied the odds and became a chart topper: here were recordings not of the great pianist-composer but of his piano rolls. Only problem: they were just piano rolls. By contrast, these discs (part of Philips's comprehensive Great Pianists series) offer an affordable chance to hear the real Rach in action, and they're not to be missed. The composer's big hands tackle Chopin's Funeral March Sonata with a sobering grace and power that still sound timeless. Schumann's Carnival, despite low fidelity, is breathtaking in Rachmaninoff's colorful hands. Hearing the composer play his own works on disc 2 is a revelation: his style is neither flashy nor subdued. Oriental Sketch is expressive and rollicking but never overdone. The sound quality on these recordings ranges from fair to good (surface noise is always apparent), but to fans of Rachmaninoff (and great piano playing), a little hiss can be easily ignored. These recordings have a ton of character and life. --Jason Verlinde

5 out of 5 stars Words cannot explain how great his playing is!.......2004-01-01

It would be worth creating a time machine just to go see Rachmaninoff play! The playing on this set is truly spectacular. I had the same problem as the earlier reviewer, I regretted buying this CD because I could have bought his complete recording from RCA. Nevertheless, this is still an excellent sample of the playing of one of the greatest pianists of the 20th century. It's a shame that Rachmaninoff didn't record any other large-scaled works other than the Chopin Funeral March Sonata and the Schumann Carnaval.

The recording of the Chopin Sonata is my favorite favorite recording along with the Horowitz recording on Sony. The Schumann Carnaval is my absolute favorite of this work, there is no comparison!
All the other smaller pieces on this set are played to perfection. The Chopin ballade and scherzo are beautifully played. It's a joy to hear some of these transcriptions played, some of them are neglected these days. Everyone interested in Rachmaninoff should own recordings of him playing his own music, the selections here are wonderful.
The sound quality is obviously nothing near todays standards, and understandably so considering the recording dates range from 1921-1942.

Overall this set his HIGHLY recommended, if you wouldn't be bothered by the poor sound quality. Rachmaninoff's playing has what many pianists today lack, which is individuality and imagination.

5 out of 5 stars Buy it if you like Rachmaninov (which you should).......2001-07-07

Rachmaninov is one of the very greatest piano artists of the twentieth century. He was a complete piano artist, rather than a specialist, in the sense that he was both a piano composer and a piano virtuoso. Any serious piano collection is not complete without some Rachmaninov recordings. The only reason I regret buying the present disk is because now I prefer to buy the complete recordings of Rachmaninov, which subsumes this disk. The highlights of the present disk in my mind is (1) the Chopin funeral march sonata, (2) the Schumann "Carnaval", and (3) Rachmaninov's performances of his own compositions. The best recordings of the chopin sonata in my mind are the present recording, recordings by Cortot, and more recently, by Pollini and Ashkenazy. The best recordings in my mind of "Carnaval" are the present recording, and again Cortot's rendition. There aren't many comparable modern recordings of "Carnaval", which is disappointing since this is such an incredible piece. Of course there are many outstanding performances of Rachmaninov's compositions, my favorite being Richter; but of course anyone seriously interested in Rachmaninov's piano compositions will be very interested in hearing the composer perform his own works. An outstanding, albeit dated, set of recordings.

    5 out of 5 stars A Mild Disagreement.......2000-12-30

I just want to enter my mild disagreement with the "Music Fan from Pittsburgh", whose less than total endorsement of this recording might put off some folks, even though the reviewer did recommend it. These performances of Carnaval and the Chopin Sonata are two of the most astonishing piano performances I have ever heard, and I've been a student of the piano and pianists for well over 50 years now. Yes, Rubinstein's Scherzi are also essential; I'm not so sure about Pollini's Sonata (fabulous pianism that just leaves me cold). Rachmaninoff is in that rarified category of the 5 or 10 greatest pianists of the 20th century, and like each of them, he was absolutely unique. Anyone who wants to collect the work of the greatest pianists needs to have every note that Rachmaninoff recorded.

5 out of 5 stars An Essential Recording.......2000-09-04

It depends on what you want. If I wasn't a collector of piano works in particular, I would look elsewhere for the particular pieces on this disk. In particular, I'd choose Rubinstein for Chopin's Scherzi and Ballade and Pollini for the Chopin Sonata. The main reason is the sound quality on this disk is inferior to other first rate recordings. On the other hand, if you are a collector to some degree, this disk really is essential. The choice of pieces is wonderful. The Chopin, Beethoven, Schumann, and Liszt and all very wonderful pieces, and indeed the playing is more than first rate. Not to mention the interest of hearing Rachmaninov playing his own works. I enjoy listening to this cd despite the sound quality, and as long as you aren't looking for exactly the best recordings of these particular pieces, I'd suggest you put it on your buying list.

    4 out of 5 stars Overall, a satisfying set!.......2000-07-28

I subtracted one star for sound quality. In spite of that, this is a wonderful set. No one will ever replace Rachmaninoff: his distinctive, top-notch pianism and his mostly-melancholy compostition genius.

How revolutionary to hear Rachmaninoff play his own works the way that he does! I was also impressed by the Strauss waltz.... Amazing! Schumann's Carnaval receives a sensitive reading that sounds "just right." The Scherzo and the Funeral March in the Chopin Sonata are tremendously played with thunder and emotion. Rachmaninoff's own transcription of the Bach violin work is delightful too....
