Good thing we live in an age of internet-accessible lyrics. Otherwise, millions of teenage girls might find themselves mumbling through this collection of burn-the-joint-down pop instead of belting it out, which will be not only their first instinct but also their feverish, feverish desire. As a flip through about any teen magazine confirms, the Veronicas are a pair of identical twins from Australia who ooze coltish charm, volatility, and an aversion to jugheaded songcraft. Their debut does not belie the glossy claims: "4ever," the single leading the flock, crashes the gate with a punk-slanting, slightly Avril Lavigne-y boy tease, and though the energy stalls a bit on sleepers like "Speechless" and "Nobody Wins," it more than resurrects itself with the smart lyrics of "Secret" and the lathered-on boldness of "Mother, Mother," the most smokin' track Lindsay Lohan never sang. Part Bangles, part Benatar, and all babe, the Veronicas have crafted a 12-song bender that crushes the short-skirted competition. -Tammy La Gorce
Album Description
The Veronicas are Jess and Lisa Origliasso, 20-year-old identical twins from Brisbane, Australia-and they are going to rock your world. Adding a tough edge to teen powerpop, and the looks and savyy to back it up, The Veronicas were signed to an exclusive production deal with Engine Room on the strength of their first demo. With their irresistible debut album, The Secret Life of the Veronicas, written and produced by the likes of Billy Steinberg (Madonna), Clif Magness (Avril Lavigne), Max Martin (Britney Spears), Dr. Luke (Kelly Clarkson), Don Gilmore (Linkin Park) and Toby Gad (Enrique Iglesias), among others, the secret is out about The Veronicas.

Better than I expected, not bad for the under 30 listener.......2007-06-03
The first I'd ever heard of The Veronicas was when I got a copy of the Australian TV series Cybergirl (PAL format- get it on eBay)- although the twins had only supporting roles in that series the DVD case promoted them. I eventually found out that they sing (most of their TV appearances appear to be related to promoting their singing career) and looked around for something they'd done.
I didn't expect much but was pleased to find that this CD isn't really too bad. I suppose the teens and 20's group will like it better (I'm 49)but I found the musical accompaniment to be loud and sometimes overwhelming the lyrics. The song lyrics themselves seemed all right, I don't have any favorites, it sounds as though the sisters can actually sing. If you're their age, you might like the CD, if you're old enough to be the parents of the Veronicas at least your kids will have something all right to listen to.
i love it.......2007-04-30

Well, it's good for babe pop!.......2007-03-16
I liked Mouth Shut and Secret. Hopefully they'll continue to develop some more. I heard one of the sisters had vocal surgery, so hopefully they come back from that!
The greatest debut album in the history of popular music!.......2007-03-09
The Veronicas are quite simply the most perfectly conceived pop group of recent years. How so i hear you ask?
I shall tell thee:
(1) their music is insanely catchy without being fake and annoying
(2) they are twins
(3) they are very attractive twins
(4) their voices are full and rich not whiney like Avril Lavinge
(5) the veronicas is a very cool name for a pop group
(6) they can write their own songs
(7) their fashion style is wicked!
(8) Lisa is easily the most beautiful girl on the planet
(9) they're from Australia
(10) their lipstick logo is the coolest band logo since the Rolling Stone's tongue.
The album itself is a finely crafted set of wonderful songs sung with spirit and spunk - buy it !

beautiful music, rich with imagery and color..............2007-05-13
I was honestly surprised how underrated and underappreciated JOURNEY THROUGH THE SECRET LIFE OF PLANTS was, upon first release in 1979. Stevie Wonder, who received glowing reviews for his classic SONGS IN THE KEY OF LIFE, was riding the high of well-deserved positive musical critiques, and veered off in a new, innovative direction that he hadn't explored until PLANTS.
JOURNEY THROUGH THE SECRET LIFE OF PLANTS was music composed for a documentary (of the same name) based on what was originally a very engrossing book. The film celebrated and explored the "secret" world of plants, their mating habits, interactions and cycles in a way that was previously unexamined in quite the same way in nature films and on public television. This film sounded fascinating.....unfortunately, it was unreleased to the general public, and remains unreleased today. Except for the two weeks it was in the theatres, and its rare appearances at smaller film theaters, it remains unknown and impossible to find. Through this beautiful album, we are transported to that secret world. Wonder's innovative and beautiful attention to detail in his distinctive percussive numbers, that incorporate African-derived rhythms, djembe drum and chants in songs like "Kesse Ye Lolo De Ye" (on disc 2), Japanese-inspired melodies ("Ai No Sono") and synthesized dance numbers, illustrating the journey and (even) social life of the plant ("Power Flower" and "A Seed's A Star/Tree Medley") are just beautiful. A song particularly worthy of more appreciation and airplay is the beautiful and haunting "Come Back As A Flower" (Stevie's duet with Syreeta Wright), and sounds like a life affirming anthem, promoting love, peace and environmental awareness.
The lyrics in many of these songs are rich with double meaning, alluding not only to the environment, the life cycles of plants ("Black Orchid" and "The Secret Life of Plants"), but also to the African/African-American experience in the world. The lyrics make reference to appropriation, forceable possession and exploitation. I truly don't think the critics were ready for Stevie, when he took on such strong subjects. It's surprising to me, because in SONGS IN THE KEY OF LIFE, he sang about ghetto life, growing up and the like and the album was received far differently. I only hope that we one day have the privilege of seeing THE SECRET LIFE OF PLANTS, the documentary that this music was inspired by. It couldn't come at a better time. What's more, the book is definitely overdue for a reissue. Don't overlook this beautiful album! It's poetry set to music.
Better than I remember.......2007-03-24
I had this on LP decades ago, and have been looking for the CD set (or MP3/AAC) for years. I am so happy to have found it. The sound is so much clearer on CD--even after all these years. As for content, I didn't buy it for "Send Her Your Love"... you can get that cut anywhere. I got the set for "Outside My Window" and "Come Back as a Flower". Both have such clarity. You can hear the fingers stick to the accoustic guitar strings between chord changes, and the vocalist breathe.
A movie soundtrack........2007-01-28
This was meant to be a movie soundtrack, not a regular album. Stevie isn't trying to increase his melodies-per-square-inch count here, but HAS written some marvelous music, spread across 4 sides of vinyl. There is some uptempo music, and some pretty low key stuff as well, but for a movie you NEED the low key, his music obviously can't be the focus all the time but simply something nice in the background. This isn't necessarily an album to bring out for a party, but playing on your car stereo as you patiently, carefully pick your way through a wintery drive. There is some great music on here, I don't care much for the Chinese and Indian influenced songs especially "Voyage to India", "Ai No Sono", but if something interesting was going on onscreen, you'd hardly notice.
The overall themes, summarized at the start and end, are pleasant enough. Race Babbling is an interesting funk/disco experiment (how often does disco get to be experimental?) Send One Your Love is a nice ballad along Stevie's usual lines, the instrumental version of it is just as nice as the one with a vocal. Flower Power is a nice bit of soft R&B, hinting the direction he was heading. My favorite songs are 'Outside My Window' with a very catchy singalong chorus, the spooky, weird, solemn instrumental "Eccliastes", and the "Seed's a Star" medley, these would have been good picks for an album of pop songs. "Black Orchid" is pleasant, but sounds to me like a somewhat inferior rewrite of "I Believe When I Fall In Love" (especially in the verses with his voice doing the big melodic jumps), "Power Flower" is an acceptable song with nice harmonies. "Venus and Flytrap" is another rehash of the themes in this album, with interesting arrangement.
I think you could have taken the best from this album and from his next, "Hotter Than July" and come up with an album of 10 songs that stood with his best works (i.e. everything from 1971 to 1976). People don't realize that Stevie Wonder is also an ordinary person whose tastes and motivations change over the years - do you listen to exactly the same music now that you did ten years ago? For this album, he got to experiment and try things out, not caring if it was a hit or not. I mean, when you have millions of dollars, probably scoring the next big hit is a lot less pressing then when you're living dirt-poor, hoping for a breakthrough. So he gets to indulge himself here, sometimes it's really good, and even when it's not, it's far from 'terrible'.
Weirdly great!.......2006-10-01
I remember waiting for this album to hit the UK stores after just loving "Songs in the Key of Life". Quite a surprise, but a few plays later I was hooked. This soundtrack is more like a journey, serenading us with some of the most beautiful ballads and instrumentals Mr. Wonder has recorded (IMHO).
"Come back as a Flower" still gives me goose-bumps, "Same old Story", the title track and "Black Orchid" are stand-outs.
At the time, critics panned this work, but almost 30yrs later, things have changed. This title is well worth tracking down or splashing out for an import. There are still some new ones out there!!
Criminally Overlooking, This album is Worth a Critical Reassessment..........2006-06-27
Between the period of 1971 - 1976, few could argue that brilliance of Stevie Wonders musical output. A period that saw such groundbreaking releases such as: "Talking Book", "Innervisions", "Fulfillingness' First Finale", "Songs in the Key of Life"....all albums that took driving funk & Motown Soul, and mixed them with warm keyboards, and lyrical content that touched upon: Politics, Love, Social injustice, Joyous Good times, and religion, and self-belief....to conquering effect. Which is what made this release of after 1976's "Songs in the key of Life", all the more curious and bizarre. Because instead of following on, from the ambitious wide-ranging arrangements, exuberant synthesizer, and tightly sequenced funk of "Songs in the key of life". Stevie instead bucked all current convention, and released this...a meditative mostly instrumental album of quietly intimate sounds, Precious moods, and reflective arrangements. Gone were the finger-pointing political statements, Biting Funk, and celebratory grooves. This was an album that was a decidedly much softer proposition, with an overall sound, that was considered, too intimate and inward-looking to suggest Radio air-play, and a cycle of loosely themed (semi-linked) songs, that were too downtempo, to be really considered hit single material (although "Send One Your Love" and "Outside My Window", were released as singles). What followed was mass confusion, on the radio/Critics part....with most, simply baffled by Stevie's musical direction, and large-scale indifference on the part of consumers. And so, this left the album, largely ignored by the general public, and quickly lead to Stevie reverting back to type, with 1980's upbeat soul/funk workout "hotter than July".
Looking back on "Journey through the secret life of Plants", and giving the album a much need re-evaluation, it's not hard to see why, it was so off-handedly dismissed on its release. This was such an unusual release from what had gone before, it's a soundtrack to a film (that may or may not have been released) and at the time it was like throwing a musical `Curve-ball', to the record buying public. But, that doesn't mean that it deserved to be largely passed over. No, in fact it's quite the opposite....looking at this album now, long after his most recognised work, has become familiar to us all, highlights what (with hindsight), is a massive mistake on the critics/buying public. What was tight and edgy in his previous albums, has become a softer, more reflective sombre mood, the instruments take the centre stage here, with the few vocals tracks that are contained throughout the album, mostly limited to assisting the instrumentals (rather than being at the forefront). "Voyage to India" is probably closest to a regular Stevie track, "Ai No, Sono" features a lovely children choir, and "Power Flower" has the vocal pushed firmly into the background, and sounds like a vocal instrument that complements the instrumentals. I defy anyone to not be moved by the sheer elegance of the arrangements, the contemplative mood, and gentle lush keyboard work, that runs throughout this album. For a rough idea of what to expect, if you are familiar with the track "You've got it bad, Girl" from Stevie's "Talking book" album, well imagine the warm electronic arrangements, sentimental template, and innocent conception of low key R&B, without the vocals. Then that will give you a rough idea of what to expect. I don't know if it's because it's a (mostly) instrumental soundtrack album, but it sounds like Stevie worked long and hard to get these arrangements, up to such a highly proficient level. This is probably because, seeing as this music would be judged on a purely musical level (with no lyrics, as such to fall back on). That this release really had to be able to stand up on its own, without Stevie's lyrics to fall back on, and it is arguably some of the most gorgeously expressive (instrumental) music that Stevie has committed to record. With such stylistic exercises in composition, and a beautifully subtle kaleidoscope of contrasting textures, this is a unique, and peerlessly melodic sounding record, that stands on its own, as something vastly different, from anything that Stevie had attempted before (and probably one, of the reasons, for its commercial failure). But looking back on the album some twenty odd years on, it's a truly remarkable sounding record that, rewards each listen with little sounds and glistening moods, it's a soundtrack that sounds unlike anything else (although how well suited to the film, is hard to ascertain, as nobody seems to have seen the film). And if that sounds like something you'd want to listen to, they you really owe it to yourself, to give this a listen. Sure!!...there will be those that think this album is a pointless exercise, like listening to a "Marvin Gaye" album minus his singing. But it'd take a cold, cold heart not to acknowledge that Artistically, Stevie has taken the bold step of creating something that pushed his music into an entirely new (although unsuccessfully commercial) direction. And listening to it today, without having judged it, after having come off the back of an incredible run of albums, this is one of those albums that will rope in new fans, that are prepared to put any preconceptions to one side and meet the music on its own terms (rather than what came before it), and although it probably can't quite stand up as well as his peak-period albums, this is arguably, deserving of almost as much recognition of any of Stevie's other landmark releases.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent Comeback.......2007-05-05
THis album has steadily gotten 5 star reviews since it came out for a reason. It is a terrific rock album by one of the best rockers ever. Erics' singing is as great as it ever was. He writes great human interest stories in his songs, and the band is fantastic. I have the old Eric Burden albums. Great stuff, but always had some duds on em. This album is super all the way thru. If you like Eric at all, this is a must buy, as it is definately one of the best albums he ever made. You get hard rockers, ballads, and some blues& boogie. Great variation and a well thought out comeback. His songwriting is better than ever.
The Best Burdon disc of the past 20 years.......2007-02-26
Much as others have said... interesting variety, solid production. I think his voice is much stronger here than on other releases of the past two decades.
Truely cool.......2006-10-07
Eric Burdon is one of the most underappreciated artists of his time. This CD was put out in 2004 and Eric's voice can still growl and belt out tunes better than guys 1/2 his age. There are some truely cool tunes on this CD. Track 5 - Factory girl is blues tune with Celtic tint - Burdons voice is haunting as it's complemented by the Uillean Pipes and Irish whistle -superb! Track 2 - Motorcycle Girl is the just plain good - and others - Highway 62, Over the Border - all excellent.
Eric Burdon is a storyteller - he's been recounting stories in his music since the 60's and this talent is undiminished. I can listen these songs for hours.
Listening to his stories on this CD makes me wonder just what kind of journey his life has been for him to write such thought provoking and moving tunes.
This CD is a joy to listen to and a trip to take - enjoy.
Look, there isn't much to say........2006-06-24
Get this recording and listen to it four times. I guarantee at that point you will be addicted. It has it all and then some. A man of 63 singing like this? Just spectacular. I love Mick, but with all due respect (and he deserves a lot,) I don't think Mick could do the same justice to some of the material here as Burdon does.
If you're looking for a bright star in a dark universe... If your looking for some fun or have been yearning for an album you can sink your teeth into, look no further. I have rediscoverd Eric Burdon and he never left the building.
Mr. Burdon has gone to the cross roads!!!!.......2006-01-18
I bought this record strictly because of the reviews I read on Amazon. Im glad I did!!!
Perhaps only God or the Devil could make a man sing like this! Incredible vocals, technigue, and interpretations. Ultra great band too - where did these guys come from? Super production - beautiful sound. Great songs with cool lyrics. One of the best records ever to be heard anywhere - anytime. Chilling. Still cant believe anyone can do those things with a voice, with complete ease and always comes off completely natural. Mr Burdon's voice is never a put-on, no matter whether he goes for gentle whispers or Louis Armstrong type growls - he's the real
F-n deal! Every time he does something with his voice - you go -oh man I cant belive he can do that - do it again! - and then he does something else totaly new. Always stikes the right mood. Rock, blues, jazz, latin, folk - it dosnt matter - this guy is great. As well as all the musicians on this album. The song "Jazz Man" is an instant jazz classic - Mr Burdons Jazz vocal style is better then music -right in the groove - outstanding!
Please Mr. Burdon - Please Guys - do a Jazz songbook!!!

Best kept secret .......2007-03-28
This is one fantastic cd, more people should know about it! Sonia Dada plays a wide range of styles and sounds on this one. The vocals and bass lines are simply some of the best, along with inovative rythms from the percussions. Buy it, live it and love it (just don't go giving your love away).
Another outstanding Sonia Dada album.......2001-02-18
These guys just get better and better, this is a stunning album with unmatched musical and lyrical richness.
Although it isn't marked clearly, it is recorded in HDCD as was their previous album, "Lay Down and Love It, Live". The sound quality of this CD is spectacular, I use it as my reference CD when evaluating audio equipment.

Well, it seems Sonia Dada has managed once again to rip out my heart while making me smile the whole time. Lines like, "Fat Jack had a heart attack, he was slumped over dead behind the wheel of his cadillac" and "She don't wanna talk about it anymore, lost the battle, baby, lost the war," make this an unforgettable ride through the strange, surreal land of Dada. And the rythym, that funky, bluesy, spiritual trademark of S.D. has never been richer than it is in "My Secret Life."

best songwriting of the current day-.......1999-07-25
This CD has it all.. it is deeply introspective, from so many points of view, it reflects life in different lights that aren't thought of every day-the best song on this in my opinion is Circus Girl, this is one example of the amazing aura that Gretchen creates throughout this album. Everyone needs a copy!!
It made me reflect on life and its many meanings........1999-04-20
I loved this album-i had only seen it reviewed as a country album, which didn't do it justice, because this couldn't be put into a specific genre, in my opinion. Every word on this album is so deeply thought out, and the vocals show that Gretchen really put that amount of feeling into it too...i recommend this to anybody who wants to sit back and relax and just listen to a great album with lots of amazing stories.
Whimsical and touching "slices of life".......1999-02-18
Isn't it great when you come across a new artist whom you know will become one of your favorites? For me, Gretchen Peters is one of these. If you like Mary Chapin Carpenter, Cheryl Wheeler, Beth Nielsen Chapman, and Eliza Gilkysen, you will probably like her too. I'm glad this CD has been out for awhile. Hopefully that means there's a new one due in the very near future.
wonderful and thoughtful lyrics. i want more.......1998-08-28
The lyrics are wonderful and thoughtfull. I want another album of the same caliber, please.
TSOL is incredibly intelligent and hasnt a weak cut........1998-05-20
The Secret Of Life is one of the strongest releases I have heard in a long time. Gretchens ability to communicate an idea or emotion is amazing and her vocals are truly beautiful. If you like well written material sung by one who is well versed in evoking thought and feeling, this ones for you.

Amazon.com essential recording
Released in 1981, My Life in the Bush of Ghosts is a collaboration between ambient pioneer Brian Eno and Talking Heads frontman David Byrne. On Ghosts, the two strong-willed musicians manage to come to a meeting of the minds, blending Byrne's herky-jerky funk with Eno's atmospheric sound sculpting. More than anything, this is a large album, intent on pushing itself to the front of the listener's consciousness. Abundant percussion (everything from booming tribal drums to eerie electronics) reverberates in the background while Byrne and Eno toss all manner of found sounds, field recordings, and radio broadcasts into the mix. What results is a groundbreaking album that introduced a generation to the dazzling possibilities offered by electronic recording techniques. Highlights include "The Jezebel Spirit," an electro-funk workout that uses a recording of an exorcism as its focal point, and "Very, Very Hungry," a mysteriously ethereal display of electronic percussion and large-scale sonic architecture. --S. Duda
Customer Reviews:
Groundbreaking!.......2006-03-30
Wgen I first heard this record I was completely blown away. IT was a completely new and unique fusion of ethnic music and modern technology. tracks such as Jezebel Spirit and Help Me Somebody remain incredible even to this day. Even if the sound has aged slightly (it is somewhat trebly by today's standards and the bass and guitar somewhat too newwavy...but i guess it was the time so...) I still consider this one of the ...100 best records i have.
Qu'ran is back, baby........2005-04-18
Perhaps I have a strange version of the cd, but I think the new versions of the cd now have "Qu'ran" as track 6 and "Very, Very Hungry" at track 12.
I'm glad they put Qu'ran back in the mix because it's one of my favorite songs. I also particularly like "Mea Culpa" "Regiment" "Help Me Somebody" "Come With Us" and "Very, Very Hungry"
It's very funky and odd. Not quite like anything else. I do get strange looks from people, though, when they hear preaching coming out of my cd player.
Groundbreaking brilliance..........2005-03-31
Few records can justifiably claim to be "groundbreaking", but here's one - a mesmerising example of two highly creative musicians at the peak of their powers pushing their ideas out to the edge. Using the infectious poly-rhythms and jerky, high tension riffs & vocals that permeated their brilliantly successful collaboration on Talking Heads' "Remain in Light" as their starting point, they mix-in ingenious looped samples and insidious guitar, synthesizer & percussion back-beats to produce something completely unique. Not only like nothing else around at the time but, like all truly great albums, one that hasn't aged with time. Often sounding more like an inventive slice of modern "electronica/dance" it's almost impossible to believe that it was produced over twenty years ago... and, of course, a great deal of what's followed since can be traced back to this amazing record.
Darker and far more "left-field" than "Remain in Light", "My Life in the Bush of Ghosts" is no easy listen, but with repeat playing it becomes equally addictive... a worthy successor and a wholly successful exploration of just how far Brian Eno's & David Byrne's complex fusions of electronica & rock could be taken. File under "essential, timeless and under-rated slice of musical genius".
Brilliant .......2004-11-18
I have had a few copies of the vinyl, and back in the day created a cassette with the deleted track Qu'Ran. Then a friend gave me a program that enabled me to rip Qu'Ran from tape to the PC and enabled me to burn a cd with the proper track listing adding Very Very Hungry as the bonus track it should have always been.We are also in the process of finding the Katherine Kuhlman tracks which were deleted due to pressure from her estate.Whee!
Why Qu'aran is not in this CD ??.......2004-07-16
From S?o Paulo, Brazil !
This album is excellent, but a song called Qu'aran, (one of my favourite)is not on this CD ! political reasons ? I don't know.
Fortunately I have a vinyl version. If you don't know this song, try to find in vinyl, the bass line is great !

Great, but no prize.......2002-03-31
The selections from the Ring trilogy, Friends in need and Fallen Angel were excellent, however, some of the special request such as joxer the mighty, seemed a little bit rushed. Wasn't that song on Volume 2 already? Where was M'Lila's song from Destiny, or the music played During the first Kiss in "The Quest"
The cd has its good points, personally "It's Over" from "THAB" with its haunting melodies portraying the consequences of war.
Xena;Warrior Princess volume six.......2002-01-09
I am so happy that the last and final cd has come out, now my collection is complete. I am very sad for the show ending, but I am glad to still collect things.
Great Collection.......2001-12-25
Well, I have them all by now, but this last one is a great collection, with the added bonus of the music from A Friend In Need.
Just another fine addition to my Xena collection!
Exceptional.......2001-11-30
I am a fanatic and devoted Xenite.I have a huge problem:i can't stop listening to that cd,since the first time i listened to it,which means 1 month! That cd is really exceptional and i think that every true and genuine Xenite should buy it!It's really good!I was moved when i heard the Fallen Angel part.I was passioned when i heard the Ring Trilogy!I was astonishing when i heard the bonus cues that were included, especially the cue from The Quill Is Mightier(fishin part),oh,i was completely satisfied!
Though, there is a complain:i can't understand, why after 6 cd's,the producers don't do a cd including cues like:M'laila's song, the cues from the Bacchaen festival, music from Deja Vou All Over Again, where in the end,Gabrielle says to Xena those wonderful words,or even the scene of the kiss in The Quest! That,i can't understand it!
Last, i believe that whoever likes LoDuca's music style, should buy this cd.
Pay attention to the 22 cue:Pas De Deux Femmes. It is one of a something and whoever remembers what's the scene of this song, will agree with me!Mmmm!
A MIX OF THE BEST, THE WORST AND THE MISSING.......2001-11-29
To all truly Xena fans this CD is a must-have but have some lacks... Fun (comedy episodes music) scores destroy the the great combination of FALLEN ANGEL, THE RHEINGOLD TRILOGY AND I FRIEND IN NEED. In the first selections LoDuca creates spectacular high level music good enough to be played in a Symphony orchestra concert. The others selections have easy-to-fill-space western cowboy music instead of put M'Lilas song of DESTINY, Amazon's climbing trees of ADVENTURES IN THE SIN TRADE and NAJARA vs XENA music that would be gladly accepted by us. I doubt the company will launch a next CD but if they'll do this track and another valuable more must be there and the adittion of some famous characters quotes like "I have many skills" from Xena.
