Album Description

Whether partnered with Guy Sigsworth as Frou Frou, or on her own, Imogen Heap is an enormously gifted singer, songwriter, producer, keyboardist, and programmer. She does it all here on her second solo CD which showcases her remarkable talents. The stunning track 'Hide and Seek' offers the electronic equivalent of a cappella, with only Imogen's expressive voice heard via vocoder -- an early favorite that shot right to #1 on iTunes Electronic Chart in June 2005. The song was also featured on the season finale of THE O.C., and earlier in the season, THE O.C. previewed another track from this album called 'Goodnight and Go', a bittersweet ballad about the secret admiring of a neighbor. Comparison's have been made to Bjork, Alanis Morrisette, Joni Mitchell and Annie Lennox, among others, but no one can hold a candle to Imogen Heap. Her electronic programming and keyboarding are so textured and layered, you will hear something new with each and every listening. Her canvas is cinematic, operatic, visionary, and always surprising with twists, turns, tangents and breaks that keep the listener on a journey of the unexpected. Whether evoking a hundred piece orchestra, an electric slide guitar, or a simple vocoder, Heap weaves her magic spell. As a lyricist, Heap has a wicked sense of humor, yet can drive a knife right through your heart when you least expect it. Don't miss out on one of the very best albums of the year. No domestic release date scheduled. Megaphonic. 2005.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliance.......2006-06-16

I got this album recently. At first I didn't really like it, but the more you listen to it the more you get taken in by it. I love every song and find myself changing favourites every listen. However, I'm probably the only one who hates Hide & Seek. Sorry, but I just don't like it, and everyone just seems to wax lyrical about it. It's bearable, but not as amazing as everyone makes it out to be. Despite this, the rest of the album is brilliant. I recommend listening to it with earphones so you can hear the little sounds that would be lost otherwise. for instance when she sniffs before singing "I think something is burning" on Just for Now. This album is amazing. If you like this you'll definately love Frou Frou. Again, a brilliant album

5 out of 5 stars Imogen, the short and the long.......2006-04-29

The Short: Imogen deserves the attention of the world, and she's a couple songs away from getting it. This is the version you want, although I think the Sony screw-up is gone.

The Long: This entire album is solid. It's gorgeous and transcendental the entire time. It's versatile, so you don't feel weighted down with pretentious melodrama, or unsatiated by a lack of substance. Again, there is no weak song. I have favorites of course (Have You Got It In You?, Just For Now) but no song is skippable. You might try to treat this album like others, falling into the habit of skipping around, but one listen to every track will make you realize, you're not anxious to hear the next track, you feel good about the one you're hearing. "Just For Now" is probably the best song, being a cool and crisp ballad that floats along. Goodnight and Go, and Daylight Robbery are fun, radio friendly songs that prep you for something deeper or darker like "Hide and Seek" or "The Walk". There's an incredible counterbalance of song to song that keeps the album flowing smoothly.

Hold on.. let me mention every other song.
Closin in: Sweet ballad, lyrically beautiful
I Am In Love With You: Strange hip-hop electronica fusion. She's dynamic, this shows it. (also showcases her vocal range)
Clear the Area: Smooth and attractive with a powerful chorus
Loose Ends: another fun poppy one (is this the one with the mind-blowing ending "primary resistance at a critical low, got to..")
Headlock: layered and impressive electronica, another powerful chorus (almost angry)

Please Purchase.
Thanks. :)

Ok, I don't want to sound sad or pathetic, but Imogen Heap's (commonly called Immi) album "Speak For Yourself" has changed my life. I absolutely love this cd and am surprised that my car stereo hasn't simply rejected the thought at playing "Headlock" or "The Walk" one more time.

A few days ago I saw Imogen in concert at a wonderful, intimate venue in San Francisco and I was just amazed at how talented she really is. I never realized that she is all alone performing, no band or recordings. She creates all of the music while she is singing, using piano, laptop, keyboard and other various things.

From the deep, soulful "Just For Now", to the fast-paced, guiter-laced "Daylight Robbery", Imogen creates an eclectic and wonderful album that leaves you wanting more.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Lanza in (mostly) top form.......2004-11-28

This is a "twofer" CD, consisting of the 1955 soundtrack to the movie Serenade and the 1956 Cavalcade of Show Tunes album. Before I go any further, however, I should acknowledge that I was one of the liner note writers for this release. But I have no financial interest in the CD, and am simply reviewing it here because to date no one else has commented on it!

Serenade marked Lanza's return to films after an absence of three years, and revealed a voice that had darkened considerably, while still retaining its brilliant upper register. Stylistically, this is also a much-improved artist in many respects from the sometimes-wayward tenor of the early 1950s. Anyone who compares Lanza's superbly operatic renditions here of Amor Ti Vieta, Lamento di Federico, and O Paradiso with his earlier versions (all featured on the CD Mario Lanza Sings Opera Arias and Duets) will immediately detect the new-found control in his singing.

That's not to say that all of the Serenade material is outstanding. Lanza's renditions of Nessun Dorma, O Soave Fanciulla, Di Quella Pira, and the title song are below par, with the tenor uncharacteristically strained in the upper register and rough in his approach. But redeeming everything are the oustanding renditions of the arias mentioned in the previous paragraph, together with Lanza's sensitive singing of Di Rigori Armato from Der Rosenkavalier, a superb Torna a Surriento, and an unsurpassed Dio! Mi Potevi Scagliar from Otello. Lanza also recorded the Act III duet from Otello with Licia Albanese for this film, but time constraints have reduced it to a brief extract here. (The entire duet, however, can be heard on the aforementioned Arias & Duets CD.)

The other album featured here showcases the romantic side of Lanza. Beautifully recorded, Cavalcade includes passionate renditions of Yours is My Heart Alone, Only a Rose, Will You Remember, and other selections from operetta and musical comedy. Although Lanza may indeed be *too* zestful here for some tastes, vocally at least, he is at the height of his powers. The voice is rich and round - gloriously consistent throughout its registers - and the abundance of effortless B flats, Bs, and even a high C reveal a tenor in formidable form.

Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars One of my all-time favorite live albums.......2007-06-06

Quite simply, I discovered the music of Black Sabbath through this album. Of course, I subsequently went back and revisited the original recordings but it was here that I heard them first. This band absolutely rocks these songs. In some cases (Wizard, Symptom) I like these versions better than original Sabbath (oh, blasphemy!) Brad Gillis absolutely rips on this album. I can't beleive he doesnt get more credit in guitar circles. I definitely prefer his version of Sabbath material over Rhoads playing on Tribute (more blasphemy!) Even Ozzy sounds good in his damaged way. Surprising, given the fact that this was recorded during one of his lowest / most inebriated spells. When I met Rudy Sarzo in person, I made a point to mention how much I loved this album. He seemed surprised. I dont know why.

      5 out of 5 stars A MUST Have!.......2006-02-23

I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one who feels so strongly of this performance. Ozzy's vocals, Brad Gillis guitar work, Rudy Sarzos bass, and Tommy Aldridge's drumming are a absolute 10! All crystal clear audio. I'm only here looking to buy a new CD being my tape is so played out, I've been listening to for 20 years from the first time I recorded it. This album put's modern popular metal to shame. Should be front and center in any collection. Ozzy or Sabbath it's just awesome.

5 out of 5 stars THE BEST LIVE ALBUM OF OZZY OSBOURNE POST SABBATH'S ERA!.......2005-08-10

      AMAZING SOUND(DIGITAL REMASTERED)!
      AMAZING LINEUP PERFORMANCE!
      AMAZING PRODUCTION!
      OUTSTANDING SABBATH-SET SONGS LINEUP PERFORMANCE!

      4 out of 5 stars Forgotten Gem.......2004-01-06

My apologies to Ozzy... I did not mean to take any food from your family's mouth, but I will admit now that I first owned this album as a pirated cassette I bought at the swap. I recall that the stickers on the side of the cassette were off centered and reversed (So I had to put in the side labeled "2" to listen to Side 1). I literally wore this tape out (and redeemed myself from my adolescent indiscretion by actually purchasing a legal copy of the album... in vinyl, of course!). This gem has been largely forgotten over the years. As a pimply faced metalhead kid, however, it was an essential part of my collection. The Sabbath songs get a new life with Ozzy's band. The production is crisp, and it avoids some of the muddled sound typical of live albums of the era. Yes, Tribute is a better representation of a live Ozzy show in the early 80's. But, at the time, this album was more Sabbath to me than Sabbath itself with either Dio or Ian Gillan. If you are a Sabbath/Ozzy fan and run accross this on CD, treat yourself to it. You might be pleasently surprised.

4 out of 5 stars "Ozzy Updates His Classic Sabbath-Era Songs".......2003-10-16

On this live album, Ozzy updates 13 of his best songs with Black Sabbath, by performing them in a live setting (recorded: 1982). Most of these tracks, if not all of them, are taken from the first three Black Sabbath albums. This means you get "Iron Man", "N.I.B.", "Black Sabbath", "Fairies Wear Boots", "War Pigs", "Sweet Leaf", "Children of the Grave", the under-rated "Wizard", & the over-rated "Paranoid." You also get some mediocre songs like "Never Say Die", "Symptom of the Universe", and "Snowblind", to top it off. Ozzy's singing is at it's best, Brad Gillis' guitar work resembles "Randy Rhoads", and Rudy Sarzo and Tommy Aldridge back up Ozzy so well. It's too bad this release wasn't remastered in 2002. The only existing version of this CD, is the "August 1995 Remaster", which is currently out-of-print. If you're an Ozzy or Black Sabbath fan please pick up this CD, while you still can.
