It's hard not to get nostalgic listening to the selections jazz composer and musician Carl Wolf produced and arranged for Music Aboard the Titanic, a collection of mostly popular music from 1912. The strings-and-piano chamber group Wolf leads does its best to showcase the versatility of the White Star Line musicians, playing a set list that includes ragtime, light classical, and waltzes. "Alexander's Ragtime Band," "Blue Danube," and "Let Me Call You Sweetheart" are the best-known inclusions, all played in elegant, straightforward fashion. Songs are intelligently grouped by their presumed setting onboard the ship, with lighter tunes classified as "Luncheon: 1st Class Dining Room" and more serious fare found in "Concert in the 1st Class Lounge." Compared to the bombast of certain Titanic tributes, this collection is sublime. Just be forewarned: whether played on the Titanic or on this CD, this is largely background music. --Jason Verlinde
Album Description
One of the most enduring legacies of the 'Titanic' is the heroism of the eight musicians who continued playing even as the great steamship sank into the Atlantic. A powerful prologue and epilogue composed by Carl Wolfe, along with selections from the White Star songbook, capture the spirit of the voyage and of the music these musicians played.
Customer Reviews:
Enjoyable, but flawed.......2003-08-27
Overall, this is an enjoyable album that is worth purchasing. The playing is refined and elegant, and it succeeds in conveying the atmosphere of a tea room or lounge on the doomed ship. But, there are a number of areas where the recording could have been improved:
- Many of the songs are represented only by the chorus, with the verses being completely absent. "Let Me Call You Sweetheart", for instance, runs through the chorus 3 times, with slightly varying orchestration, but never do we hear the verse.
- The string playing is pretty poor with regard to intonation. Passages where multiple strings are (supposedly) in unison come off a little harsh. Maybe that was the authentic way string players sounded back then? Doubtful.
- The newly composed material that bookends the authentic original music is rather discordant in style. I found myself just playing the middle tracks, skipping the first and last two.
This 1997 CD came before the movie and it's a masterpiece..........2002-06-02
In 1996, Carl Wolfe was commissioned to arrange music from the Titanic playlist (used by the White Star Line musicians) for the 1997 Titanic Exhibition. It is officially endorsed by the exhibition. Since its release, dozens of other CDs have followed, hoping to capitalize off of the success of the movie. Some aren't bad, but "Music Aboard The Titanic" is effective because it was written and arranged by a musician/composer who had served 20 years in the U.S. Navy as an arranger, conductor and musician. His two original pieces--"Leaving Queenstown" and "Fateful Hour"--are emotionally-charged and tie the entire work together as a concept CD. "Music Aboard The Titanic" is a real masterpiece. I should know--I was the one who commissioned Carl Wolfe for the job!
Very good recording for the price........1999-08-16
This recording provides a nice look into the musical trends of the upper class of early 1900s society. Although the quality of the music is certainly not that of I Salonisti, it is pleasant, clear, and relatively well-orchestrated. One of the problems with this recording, however, is that some of the pieces are not complete and/or played as they were intended to be played. The section "Dinner Dance" (tracks 12-15) includes Strauss' BLUE DANUBE; this CD's version is only a 2 1/2 minute "clip" from the original piece. Note also that -- depending on the type of audio CD player you have -- you may experience what one reviewer called "clicking" sounds. This has happend only on one CD player I have used.
Despite the minor flaws in this CD, it is definately worth the fifteen or so dollars, if you are a fan of salon-style music.
You may wish to consider the following other recordings at Amazon.com. I own all of them and am very impressed, overall:
* LAST DANCE: MUSIC FOR A VANISHING ERA (I Salonisti) - EXCELLENT * AND THE BAND PLAYED ON: MUSIC ABOARD THE TITANIC (I Salonisti) - EXCELLENT * MUSIC FROM THE WHITE STAR SONGBOOK - VERY GOOD * THE MUSIC OF THE TITANIC - GOOD * 21 AUTHENTIC SONGS FROM TITANIC (Mary Jane Newman and the Southampton Pier Players) - EXCELLENT * TITANIC: MUSIC FROM THE FATEFUL VOYAGE (Ian Whitcomb & The White Star Orchestra) - EXCELLENT

Album Description
The blues world took notice when junkyardmen released 'scrapheap full of blues' in 1998. The critics raved and the fans followed in growing numbers. 'keep on workin' features twelve new songs and more of the acrobatic harmonica virtuosity of Billy Gibson; more meaty guitar and vocals from Jesse Hoggard; still more fine vocals and potent songwriting from drummer John Scalici, and the smooth, solid bass playing of Kevin Sheahan. Produced by Jim Gaines, this rockin' blues recording has an energy and chemistry that keep junkyardmen one step ahead of the blues heap. "Cadillac" is a catchy, original perspective on the virtues of having the right set of wheels while "Cadillac dreamin' in my Catalina." If "junkyardman" was the signature song from their first release, then "keep on workin" is the new anthem for these four musicians intent on playing the best blues you'll hear anywhere.
Customer Reviews:
Just one of those CD's that you keep listening to..........2007-02-25
The Junkyardmen's CD Keep On Workin' may not be a disc that many of the purist's love (though I can be one of them myself sometimes). But it does have it's own charm. It's kind of a everyday kind of blues lover's CD, like the one that keep's finding it's way into the player. The title track is pretty hot stuff, and the disc just keep's on putting out good tune after tune through at least the first half. This disc makes me want go out and find the other CD of theirs--because if it's as good as this--it's bound to be worth having. I'd say this is one that you want in your collection, just for the pleasure of the best tunes--these guys have some music chemistry that works here. ps-this one's a must have if especially for you razorback's-just for the tune "Razorback" itself...

Customer Reviews:
Beautiful music........2007-01-10
I sat back with the lights dimmed and a cup of hot coffee and enjoyed the beautiful haunting music of years gone by. Memories abound.
5 stars for performance, 4 stars due to omissions.......2006-08-29
Why doesn't this get a perfect five stars?
Simple reason.
The producers at Silva, for wahtever reason, decided to cut down their SHE suites and Hands of the Ripper suites.
On the previous Hammer releases, "Draculas - Classic Horror Films", released in 1993, recorded in 1989, they had seven additional minutes of "Hands of the Ripper" that could have been included on this set.
Additionally, The Devil Rides Out: Film Music of James Bernard, released in 1997, recorded in 1995 and 1996 had about a minute more of additional music from SHE, PLUS about seven minutes worth of suites from Quatermass and X: The Unknown.
Both discs in this new re-issue round out at around 68 minutes, so there was room for some of these omissions.
Silva Screen gets big kudos for a reissuing these recordeings in the remastered HDCD format, but I don't understand these omissions. In fact, one of the tracks included, "Vampire Hunter" isn't even from a Hammer film, and its the only recording on this collection not on previous Silva CD's.
Again, 5 stars for the performances, the 1989 performances with Neil Richardson and the Philharmonia are fantastic. (Dracula, Dracula: Prince of Darkness, Dracula Has Risen From The Grave, Taste the Blood of Dracula, Hands of the Ripper, Vampire Circus.)
Additionally, The Westminster Philharmonic under the baton of Kenneth Alwyn do an excellent job as usual (Kiss of the Vampire, Curse of the Mummy's Tomb, She, THe Abominable Snowman, Quatermass II and Curse of the Werewolf.) Finally, the City of Prague Philharmonic, who get a bad rap more often than they deserve round out hte album and IMHO, deliver the goods, under the trusty batons of Paul Bateman (Scars of Dracula, Frankenstein Created Woman, additionally, Bateman also plays the piano solo on Kiss of the Vampire.) and Nic Raine (The Devil Rides Out, One Million Years BC, When Dinosuars Ruled the Earth, Creatures The World Forgot, The Vampire Hunter)
I'd give it 4.5 stars if I could.
Much thanks to producers David Wishart, Eric Tomlinson and James Fitzpatrick and recording engineers Mike Ross-Trevor, John Luard Timperley and Jan Holzner for contributing to these fine historical film music recordings.
"Hammer & Silva...raises the hair on the back of your neck".......2002-04-09
Silva Screen takes us on tour through the castles of Transylvania with a collection of
outstanding scores from James Bernard on Disc One ~ "DRACULA" (1958)..."KISS OF
THE VAMPIRE" (1964)..."DRACULA PRINCE OF DARKNESS"
(1966)..."FRANKENSTEIN CREATED WOMAN" (1967)..."THE DEVIL RIDES OUT"
(1968)..."DRACULA HAS RISEN FROM THE GRAVE" (1968)..."THE SCARS OF
DRACULA" (1970)..."TASTE THE BLOOD OF DRACULA" (1970)...even though the
blood doesn't flow as easily in "KISS OF THE VAMPIRE", the score from Bernard is
seductive, sensual to say the least for "creatures of the night", masked ball scene blends
atmospheric trance-masquerade themes, intoxicating main title is hauntingly mesmerizing with
"VAMPIRE RHAPSODY", just listen to the piano solo from our character in the film Carl
Ravna (Barry Warren), son of Dr. Ravna (Noel Willman) along with daughter Sabena Ravna
(Jacqueline Wallis), a cult of vampires in early 20th century Bavarian, praying on a young
honeymoon couple...Bernard's rhapsody captures the listeners heart and BLOOD!
Let's look at Disc Two with the other Hammer themes and their composers ~ "THE
ABOMINABLE SNOWMAN" (1957-Humphrey Searle)..."QUATERMASS II"
(1957-James Bernard)..."CURSE OF THE WEREWOLF" (1960-Benjamin
Frankel)..."CURSE OF THE MUMMY'S TOMB" (1964-Carlo Martelli)..."SHE"
(1965-James Bernard)..."ONE MILLION YEARS B.C." (1966-Mario
Nascimbene)..."WHEN DINOSAURS RULED THE EARTH" (1969-Mario
Nascimbene)..."HANDS OF THE RIPPER" (1971-Christopher Gunning)..."VAMPIRE
CIRCUS" (1971-David Whitaker)..."VAMPIRE HUNTER" (2000-James
Bernard)...difficult as it may be, there is a stand out ~ "THE CURSE OF THE
WEREWOLF", fine direction from Terence Fisher (director) with an outstanding cast Oliver
Reed (Leon-the Werewolf), Clifford Evans (Alfredo), Yvonne Romain (Servant Girl) and
Catherine Feller (Christina), Hammer's departure from the old stereotype of the beast is
refreshing, Reed's performance as the tormented sole, from man to wolf is touching, the score
by Ben Frankel is tense building at it's best, to say the least, setting the tone and mood for the
transformation with counterpoints is stimulating, inclusive orchestration development for what
lies ahead during a full moon.
Without a doubt the highlight pick hands down is "SHE", composer James Bernard gives of
himself without question, the SUITE takes the orchestra into lilting melodic exercises with
percussion chiming in, the harmonies are hypnotic blends of textured fabric, listen as The
Westminster Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Kenneth Alwyn display stirring strings and
a solo harp run the scales in "THE ETERNAL FLAME AND THE DESTRUCTION OF
SHE", hold-fast arrangement has haunting echoes of Bernard's constant theme, with a final
beat from a drum in the percussion section.
Must make mention the cast of players that made this possible ~ The Philharmonia Orchestra,
The City Of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, The Westminster Philharmonic Orchestra ~ and
their various conductors Kenneth Alwyn, Paul Bateman, Nic Raine and Neil
Richardson...supported by the illustrious staff from Silva Screen Records LTD ~ Reynold da
Silva (executive producer), David Stoner (associate producer), Gareth Williams (Dolby
Surround/HDCD Mastering) and of course James Fitzpatrick (compilation producer), who
has the knack of developing quality in every Silva Screen release...similar to "A History Of
Horror:From Nosferatu To The Sixth Sense" (SSD-1111/2CD Set), guaranteed to raise the
hair on the back of your neck!
Total Time: Disc One 68:01 on 14 Tracks & Disc Two 68:46 on 14 Tracks ~ Silva Screen
Records SSD-357 ~ (2002)

Album Description
This project started as an attempt to celebrate the centenary of Rev. Gary Davis's birth, but turned into something more like herding cats. We now present to you twenty musical examples that include his early Greenville partner, Willie Walker, from whom Blind Gary undoubtly learned a few tricks; his earliest known student, Blind Boy Fuller, whose commercial success virtually transformed the post-depression blues world; and eighteen recent entries, who were either students of his, or who were taught by someone who was.
The people on this CD are intened to be representative, but not exhaustive. This is because Rev. Davis was as much a teacher as he was a player, and he taught whomsoever presented themselves to be taught, for however long they were in his presence. If we had an unlimited budget and all the CDs in the world, we could present ten times as many people. When I first saw Davis in 1963, I flipped, I would assume the same holds true for all the performers whose works are reproduced here.
Half the numbers were taken from existing CDs, including the two 78s. The other half were newly minted by the performers, and may turn up on their own CDs as time goes on. An effort was made to be as inclusive as possible: we have male and female, black and white, gentle and Jew, Canadian and American, and while most of the performers are living, some have followed Rev. Davis from this vale tears. Rev. Davis did not discriminate. His influence was broad, far reaching and lifelong. But most of all, it was personal. Of the twenty performers on this recording, the majority knew him well, a couple knew him peripherally, and the remainder would have sought him out had they had the chance.

Album Description
We started out at the end of 2000 (after completing work on our fourth LP release DECAY) with about 60 tracks in rough demo format for the next release. Over the last two years, we added maybe 20 tracks to that list. Through various "cut parties" we narrowed the tracks we would work on down throughout the year, and we went into the studio on December 15th 2001 with about 26 candidate tracks for the album. The next seven months were spent refining and recording. The result -- these 16 tracks.

Album Description
David Evans has been performing traditional delta blues since 1962. His first musical partner was the late Alan Wilson of Canned Heat. Although mostly known as a blues scholar with more creditials than Mississippi has mud, his skills as a vocalist and guitarist are astounding, having learned directly from many of the old-time blues musicians who were still performing during the 1960s. Evans' style is honest and embraces the great folk tradition to which he has devoted his life. With a graduate degree from Harvard University, Evans' is also author of "Big Road Blues." In addition, he is the producer of High Water Records and has been involved with the careers of blues artists including R.L. Burnside, Junior Kimbrough, Jessie Mae Hemphill, among others. His Memphis group, The Last Chance Jug Band, has twice been featured on the nationally syndicated radio program 'Beale Street Caravan,' and released "Shake That Thing!" on the Inside Memphis label in 1997. Already, "Match Box Blues" has been lauded by blues legends Charlie Musselwhite and Fito di la Parra of Canned Heat. Although his recording career is extensive, this is David Evans' solo debut. Recorded in May of 2001, it shows him to be of equal stature as a blues musician as well as scholar. Some of the fourteen tracks include members of the Last Chance Jug Band, and all are captivating performances that are sure to stir enthusiasm among blues and folk music fans from Memphis to Mecca. "Match Box Blues" will be marketed to national media and will be heavily advertised in blues publications.
Customer Reviews:
Interesting Recreation!.......2002-03-31
It's hard to know just what to make of this CD. On first listen, I was not very impressed but after a while, it does tend to grow on you. Evan's is a bluesologist who, through his studies, felt that the Country Down Home music of Bubka White, Blind Lemon Jefferson, Son House and Charlie Patton was becoming a lost art. So, Evans set out to record these tunes recreating the sound of these individuals and hoping to reintroduce the music to a new generation. One thing for sure, after listening to the CD it is evident that Evan's achieved at least one of his goals in that the sound and tonal qualities certainly sound authentic. Whether he can entice enough people to return to the rootsy, folksy, jug band, Country blues of yesteryear remains to be seen. The disc gets four stars for Evan's authentic recreation of an ancient period put gets only three for ability to hold a listener's attention throughout. Best cuts are Evan's own "Aunt Caroline Dye Blues" and "Big Road Blues".
