4 out of 5 stars Strong performances of unjustly neglected songs.......2001-02-25

Kazarnovskaya's full-bodied soprano is a perfect match for these songs. Any disk full of songs risks a grinding sameness, but these artist draw out the individual character of each song. Quite satisfying, and at a bargain price. Why aren't these songs performed more often? Most American and European singers don't bother mastering the Cyrillic alphabet and sometimes perplexing diction. Add to that Cold War politics that made it acceptable to like Nutcracker but not the language of Rusky songs. It's time to put these restraints behind us and hear much more of these masterful miniatures.

5 out of 5 stars Frank Black goes all country.......2001-03-08

I hate the term 'alt.country' - it usually sends me to my shotgun in search of slack-jawed slackers. This is NOT alt.country. What it IS, I'm less sure of. But what I do know is that it's wonderful - at times kind of Pixies-like, other times Velvet Underground with fiddles. Mostly it's NoahJohn. I hadn't heard of them either but took the risk and spent my hard earned money on the CD. Do likewise and you won't be disappointed. (And, no, I haven't slept with any members of the band.)

5 out of 5 stars An amazing songwriter becomes and amazing band........2001-01-17

Any of you lucky enough to hear NoahJohn's, né Carl Gustav Johns' first LP, "Tadpoles" are no doubt acquainted with his ability to take familiar country music themes (God, love, booze, murder just to name a few) and hone them into brilliantly poignant, funny and, most importantly, extremely personal statements. Using various lineups for each song, Carl created a debut album that very much had the feel of one person's work. The dread moniker "singer/songwriter" might even come to mind, God forbid. Now with "Had a Burning" NoahJohn, the BAND, has been unleashed onto the world. While still the band's undisputed leader, Carl has put together a true unit of musicians and has allowed them to take his excellent songs and give them a slightly different voice. One that is a little edgier and a little darker at the same time quite a bit more rockin' and eminently more fun. Imagine going to a kegger with the Violent Femmes and the Velvet Underground playing and you might be headed down the right road. While often lumped under the alt country label, NoahJohn's work seems to have a much broader appeal. I find it interesting that I have played this album (as well as "Tadpoles") for several self-professed country haters and seen them all fall in love, despite the lap steel and fiddles. More often it seems it's the hardcore country fans that might not quite "get it." This album is a must for anyone who appreciates excellent, rough-hewn musicianship, wonderfully intelligent lyrics that occasionally put a lump in your throat and a few hooks good enough to get you out of your seat.

    4 out of 5 stars follow up.......2003-12-14

Oops, sorry, forgot about the soloists. John Aler has a brighter tenor sound, not as dark as Robert Tear, but the way he handles the recitative text is very similar. Both he an John Ostendorf are a little heavy on the vibrato for my taste, but their diction is not that much skewed by it. J. Ostendorf is a heavy, rich bass, which is striking when you first hear it against Aler's brighter lyric voice. It almost seems wooly, but he steers it away from any Wagnerian tendancies to create a striking bu handsome compliment. Baird is gorgeous- it's that simple. She is not my favorite, but she comes real close. With a voice reminiscent of Emma Kirkby and expression along the lines of Janet Baker, it's a refreshing treat among all these increasing Helden-Sopranos who think that baroque music gives them an excuse to through all delicacy out the window. Over all, this recording is more of a 4 1/2, and I think the most well balanced one may come across.

4 out of 5 stars diamond in rough.......2003-12-14

The conductor may be no Raymond Leppard, but he's preferable by a great stretch than some of these other "new baroque" recordings out there where everything is a forte marcato allegretto. He maintains the baroque atmosphere, much like Harnoncourt's sound (is this he? I don't know who the conductor is). The chorus also has the baroque sound, but my goodness! Thank God for a chorus with proper vowels and a nice sound! Much better than some Deutsche Grammaphon choruses I've heard. If you like the Monteverdi Choir with Gardiner, you'd probably like this chorus as well (I myself am a choister and soloist specializing in oratorio and other such sacred music).

4 out of 5 stars An occasional Haendel........1999-10-26

The enclosed booklet is too poor. The singers are only good (the best is the soprano). Only good also the conductor . In this way this Haendel's work seems a minor one. Is really so?

5 out of 5 stars A serious composition of music.......2000-12-07

The artists on this CD have formed an interesting and moving insight into the Jewish music. The music at times can be very operatic in nature and at other times they can be so riveting you feel yourself being moved by the pure poetry of their assonance. If you want to have several emotions at once this would be the one to get for your collection. You get to hear the words of the Hebrew language and it so beautiful. If you don't understand Hebrew it does not really matter I believe the essence of the language is there and you will understand their intentions and meaning. You are constantly swept in emotions when you hear the lyrics and rhythm.
