The Inspirations Still Sound Great After 40+ Years.......2006-08-16

Here is one great project by the legendary Inspirations. This recording showcases some of the best singing this group has done in a long time. The first cut on the record, "I've Never Gotten Over Gettin' Saved" sets the tone. It's a great song! My favorite on the project is track 4, "I Have Not Forgotten", a strong, moving ballad. Other highlights include "If You Only Knew", which may be the best solo we've ever heard from Mike Holcomb, the classic "I Know" with Archie Watkins' tenor voice and a resurrection of the song "When I Walk On Streets Of Gold". The CD closes out with the old Bear Hunter, Jack Laws, singing "My Best Friend". Highly recommended all the way around.

Perhaps the greatest songs of a woman in love than any R&B or Rock songs. Why are these women not more appreciated? Their song Sweet Inspiration is a much better anthem of a woman in love with a man than the Temptations My Girl or Persey Sledges When A Man Loves a Woman are anthems of a a man in love with a woman.

This song is based on a childhood song in Stephanie's childhood that she had sung when she was seven years old and is performed live at her childhood church and is dedicated to Sandy F. Ray who died in 1979,

A Piano tinged ballad that is the standout track on the album,

I really enjoy Stephanie's gospel CD. I can listen to it when I can't find any other music to listen to. I really want her to make some more CD'S because it takes me a while to memorize her songs. She need to also make more music videos and posters!

Ultimate Spirit Lifter.......1999-03-02

I got this tape when it first came out years ago and believe me it is the ultimate. Ms. Mills puts her true testimonies on this album. Times when I'm down I just put this cassette in my tape player and my soul and burdens are lifted. This is a one of thee best gospel albums to collect for your own personal collection. I highly recommend this album. And as always Ms. Mills gives her all and all in whatever she sings. Can't wait til she's back on the R&B list. Best Wishes Ms. Mills.

Pure Raw Talent.....Pure Soul..........2006-04-17

This cd is so incredibly beautiful. Wow, where has all the talent gone these days. These ladies are much more than just a backup group for Elvis, Aretha, and Dusty Springfield. They were the top "Girl Group" of that time even though they did'nt have the well known hits like other groups. They were matched in vocal power by Patti Labelle and The Bluebelles...In the 70's Patti and The Bluebelles collaborated with the Sweet Inspirations to record a song called TIME AND LOVE..It is a rare treat for the fans of the two groups...

A classic sleeper.......2003-09-03

When you think of girl groups of the 70's u think of First Choice, The Emotions, Three Degrees, or even The Honey Cone. A group that made several strong showings in the late 60's and early 70's is the Sweet Inspirations!

Minus Cissy Houston(mother of Whitney) on this 1973 release on STAX records the Sweet Inspirations manage to put together a winner of an album. With lush ballads("Wishes & Dishes", & "The whole world is out") and groovy blues tinged singles("Slipped & Tripped" and "Pity Yourself") this group deserved a better showing from the southern label.

The sweet inspirations also lay it down on the hauting "You roam when you dont get it at home!". The notorious bass-line groove of "All it takes is you & me" is pure soul.

Their harmonies could have only been rivaled by LABELLE in their hey-day. Check out the lovey-dovey "Why marry?" and you wont ask why they were the most in demand background vocalists for two decades........just listen to ELVIS PRESLEY, VAN MORRISON, ARETHA FRANKLIN, DUSTY SPRINGFIELD, AND OTHERS AND SEE IF YOU DONT HEAR THIS GROUP ON THE LPS???

Any fan of 70's soul should pick up this release. Essential!!!

The real thing.......2002-03-22

If you like the girl-group music featured on "Ally McBeal" or "Boston Public", you'll love the Sweet Inspirations - this is music from the source.

This disc has wonderful examples of 60's soul as well as 70's funk. The harmonies will melt your heart, and the rhythm will move your feet.

Awesome CD.......2002-01-26

This album was recorded at Stax records three years after founding Sweet Inspiration member, Cissy Houston, left the group for a solo career. The other three girls Estelle, Myrna, and Sylvia was able to carry on. These girls was mainly employed as Elvis Presley background singers for the rest of his life and career. The album itself is great. You roam the second song is my favorite. Call me when all else fails is a slow bluesy staxy song. Also on this cd is their signature song Sweet Inspiration featuring Cissy Houston.

Chandos has compiled 3 works from previous CD's to create one theme CD called Folk Inspirations, achieved with great success.

The CD begins with Bela Bartok's Hungarian Sketches or Pictures. Bartok and Zoltan Kodaly wandered around the countryside of their homeland with nothing but a notebook and a primitive phonograph recorder to record folk songs and traditions. Bartok, and Kodaly, used the melodies, harmonies, and dance rhythms from their tour and put them into their classical musical language. Hungarian Sketches are slices of Hungarian peasant life. Some are re-orchestrated piano works, but all are based on folk songs or dances. Perhaps more transparent than the rest of the works on this CD, each movement is quaint, often humorous, successfully capturing peasant life in Bartok's musical language. You can also find a successful rendering of this work including other complementary Bartok pieces with Ivan Fischer and the Budapest Festival Orchestra.

If the Hungarian Pictures are the appetizer of the CD, the two Romanian Rhapsodies by Enescu or Enesco, are the dessert. Both are rather popular in the classical music world, the first especially so. The first rhapsody features clarinet, oboe, and growling viola in the slow opening, which opens into the famous Tres vif. Neemi Jarvi takes the fast section at breakneck speed, yet never loses control. The second rhapsody is more lugubrious than the first, but utterly shimmers with folk harmonies and modes.

The crux of this CD is Leo Weiner's Hungarian Folkdance Suite. This is one of the most exciting works I own, and just stumbled upon it by purchasing this CD on a whim. The first movement slaps you in the face with blazing horns and huge orchestra hits, followed by a developed Hungarian melody and a return of the brilliant beginning. Movements 2 & 3 open up with a modal clarinet invocation, but both move into a very exciting scherzo/fanfare for the 2nd, and the 3rd into a heavy march with a melody evocative of Kodaly. The fourth movement opens with screaming strings, the movement progresses into a breathless fashion, never dwelling longer than nessecary, and always providing a twist in harmony and rhythm.

Neemi Jarvi really gives exciting performances with both orchestras represented on this disk to works of the folk-inspired genre. All sections of the orchestra speak well and play with great virtuosity; warm textures abound and instruments bite when nessecary. Jarvi rarely langors, but moves the music along, ocassionally stretching out for an off-kilter folk dance feel. This CD is mid-priced and highly recommended, just for the Weiner alone. But with the addition of the other selections represented here by worthwhile composers of the folk idiom, this CD cannot be passed up.

As best I can tell, Madacy first released the 3-CD box set, "100 Best Loved Hymns" in 2001, featuring various artists performing traditional classics. Since that time, those same 100 tracks -- same singers, same musicians, same arrangements -- have been mixed and matched into so many other CDs that I keep uncovering them. Some or all of these original tracks have been used in different combinations to produce: "100 Hymns and Praise Classics" (4-CD box set), attributed to 'Various Artists'; "50 Hymns & Praise Favorites" (2-CD set) and "50 Hymns & Praises" (3 CDs), attributed to the Joslin Grove Choral Society; "A Treasury of Golden Hymns" and "50 Amazing Hymns", attributed to the Great Plains Chorale; and, now, "Inspirations: 50 Best Loved Hymns", disingenuously attributed to Thomas Kinkade solely because he provided the cover art. All of these CDs are posted separately on the Amazon site.

Anyone considering buying this CD should be aware of these numerous other options for obtaining the identical tracks, and consider them before buying this album. At the time of this writing, the 100-track 3- and 4-CD box sets can be purchased for the same price as, or less than, this 50-track "Kinkade" CD. The 100-track sets would thus seem to make a lot more sense.

Regarding the content of this oft-released, multi-titled, multi-attributed collection of tracks, the hymns are sung in traditional arrangements, often with a full choir accompanied by an organ. Some are by soloists or smaller groups of singers, accompanied by a piano or other instruments. If you're looking for a solid traditional presentation of these classics, you will probably not be disappointed. I give the music 4 stars rather than 5 because I feel that this choral group's soloists on some tracks -- while good singers -- have voices that are perhaps not sufficiently smooth and mellow to allow them to come across well as soloists on a recording.

I guess I'm prejudiced about them as I have had the chance to meet with the group off and on over the past three decades. They are a solid a group in sound and principles as one is out there. This compilation is some of their best tracks to date whether re-recorded or just brought back to life from the vintage cuts. Whether you are hearing Archie, Troy, Eddie, and Mike, or any of the others who have come on board from time to time there is one thing that is sure. Their sound is rich, on target, and on time. This is a sure-fire gift possibility at any time of the year.

Odd Assortment of Material.......2007-05-30

One of the dangers of spelunking through the more remote corners of musical genres and composers is that in spite of the best intelligence, sometimes the urge to explore something totally new turns up a dud. Now, I'm not saying Erik Satie is a poor or inconsequential or weak composer. It's just that this particular album does nothing to warm me to his music or encourage me to listen to it again. It's an odd collection of very different types of material, none of which quite matches my picture of Satie as a musical innovator. There are things which sound like conventional stage music and other pieces which sound like liturgical movements, and still others which are spoken word (French). This album won't turn me off Satie, but it will make me much more careful in selecting the next album of his works.
