Rasta-punkian?.......2007-06-27

I thought that their first album would be pure punk and was slightly suprised to hear reggae music interjected between groups of songs. It gives the album a nice contrast but I'm not a big fan of reggae. I get the fact that both types of music have anti-authoritarian ideals, but it may be awhile before I decide to buy any more of their albums. Different Class Harmonica

This is the real stuff right here. The Godfathers of hardcore. It was the craziest and fastest album of its time. The songs still influence till this day. They invented the breakdown, listen to Right Brigade... I want to show that to every kung-fu dancing emo jerk to teach them what real hardcore is. Banned in D.C. has the best intro to any song ever... nuff said. Filled with energy and positivity, this is a must have in any collection.

So i got this cd on friday having only heard the song soul craft and at first i was a little dissapointed because it was nothing like i expected, but i listened to it a few more times and i love it if youre into any punk or hardcore this is a must have

and this goes in whenever the cd player runs out of batteries. who knows what punk really is and i'm not looking for an arguement about the subject but the people who say they like "punk" and listen to avril lavinge (spelling?) should have a copy of this record thrown at them from a moving car. this record, i think is their very best, the fastest record i've ever heard, even bad brains themselves couldn't keep the pace. rock for light has a lot of the same songs but i just feel like they're weak in comparison, maybe they were on better speed for this one, who knows...anyway, it's so much more raw and the tones of the guitars, particularly on the solos, have a marvelous presence. just one of the best records ever in any genre, it can be apreciated on the basis of sheer energy alone.

Bad Brains' early recordings found themselves in so many different releases that defining anything as their "first" album is pretty dicey. The Brains' apparent "first" demos were released on CD in the late 90's in the album "Black Dots;" this album itself had been previously released in the late 80's as "Attitude: The ROIR Sessions" before getting the special edition treatment after an endorsement by the Beastie Boys.

While this isn't their best album in terms of performance and songwriting, it is certainly their most accessible. Earl Hudson's drums lead the attack, directing Darryl Jenifer's bass and Dr. Know's guitar like a drill sergeant preparing troops for war. Dr. Know, easily the most gifted guitarist in the history of punk, drops crazy power-chord rhythms and frenzied, acrobatic solos, while Jenifer reinvents rock bass with his jazz-funk runs and tight grooves. Much is made of frontman H.R.'s pioneering performance on this album; while his incredible range does sound remarkable on this album (particularly within the context of what was coming out of the D.C. punk scene at the time), the cheap effects somewhat undermine its impact.

What keeps this album from being a five-star rockfest, at least for me, is the campy production value (Black Dots, recorded in the varying rooms of some guy's house, is mixed better than this album). Most of these songs were re-recorded for the vastly superior Rock For Light album.

Great to hear these voices again.......2007-03-17

This is the group we all sang with and laughed with. It's hard to just listen to The Kingston Trio, you find yourself joining in. This CD has excellent sound and is a good representation of the group's wit and harmony. Though there are many favorites on this CD, the classic Scotch and Soda makes it all worth the price.

Fella's, it just doesn't get any better than this. I call it perfect because
it is. American music with a light snap of latino twang just for flavor. This is college folk music that's actually fun to listen to.. And by "fun", I don't mean dance music or bubbly pop crap of the time. Not so. Folk music coming out of the 50's and 60's was often a bit of a bummer to listen to. The message often overode the ability to listen. Not so much the Kingston Trio. You can hear the "fun or nothing" rule in each cut. Dave Guard, Bob
Shane and Nick Reynolds were the perfect band, the perfect group. The latter day versions of the K.T were good but not the original receipe. They could
cover every emotion; fun, somber, sad, happy and happy drunk.

I only have one wish for Kingston Trio music; That "Fast Freight" will be
covered by Crosby Stills Nash and maybe Young. "Scotch and Soda" was the tune that would assure that you would be having breakfast with last nights date. All perfect.

Hungry for the Kingston Trio.......2006-06-29

When I was an innocent teenager, an older cousin introduced my to the Kingston Trio and said very intelligent people like them. Well, she was right! This CD is a broad scope of their ability to perform all areas of folk music. I especially enjoyed the part of the album that is live from the Hungry i as there is the banter and humor and wild wit thrown in by the guys as they perform. The audience is having a wonderful time and show it. It's worth the price of the CD just to hear songs like "They Call the Wind Maria", the joyful cynicism of "The Merry Minuet"and the rousing "Zombie Jamobree". Macabre, but fun. While I later heard trios with a little tighter and closer harmony, such as Chad Mitchell Trio, Peter, Paul, and Mary, I will always love the Kingston Trio for being the first. So, if you are intelligent, go get this CD. Excellent!!

Quintessential Kingston Trio.......2006-03-23

If you are going to get one CD of the Kingston Trio, this is the one I would purchase, for this is when they were young and in their prime. I do not think the influence of the Kingston Trio on modern popular music and rock and roll and radio play is credited fully enough by music historians, in this album you get a sense of the 'beat' generation live at the 'Hungry i' in San Francisco repleat with bongos, as well as their landmark debut album that included the number 1 jukebox hit of 1958, Scotch and Soda with vocals by Bob Shane. For all of the thousands of kids who struggle with a G-cord learning guitar, this is an album that should be heard, and if you are looking for something to add variety on your ipod, shuffle in a few of these songs. These are the originators of so many cover hit tunes like Wimbeway and Sloop John B by the Beach Boys, and the long running hit Tom Dooley. I think one of the strongest impressions that is made is the great wit and intelligence these muscians had, back in the day when being a 'college man' actually was reflected in erudite speech and humor. There are a few tunes that seem to lack inspiration, and some anachronistic references to individuals like John Foster Dulles, however there are few albums that so perfectly capture a feeling and a revolution of the cusp of popular music as does these two.

Influenced by New York punk bands like the Ramones and Dictators, as well as by traditional heavy metal ensembles, Twisted Sister created brash, simple songs that buzzed with subversive energy, giving the band the appeal of bad-boy cartoon characters. Their third album, Stay Hungry, featured the classic rebel anthem "We're Not Gonna Take It" as well as more uptempo tracks like "Burn in Hell" and "S.M.F." (which, in true metal fashion, stands for "Sick Motherfucker"). No one disputes Twisted Sister's competence level. Don't Knock It Until You've Tried It!!!!.......2007-02-15

You know, it's funny. Most of the people I've run into who trash Twisted Sister do so not so much b/c of the music, but the image. I myself was at one time guilty of this. But if you can move beyond the hideous make-up/costumes and the fact that the band only take themselves seriously about half the time, then you'll discover a truly underappreciated classic in Stay Hungry. TS' music is not about complex song structures or virtuoso musicianship. It's just good, clean and straightforward hard rockin fun, and that is something that is sorely missing in today's music. While the image is a mix of shock rock (Alice Cooper) and glam (New York Dolls), the music is more akin to early speed metal and NWOBHM. And while the songs are consistently hard and heavy, you may be suprised by the level of melodic content that exists as well. Dee Snider, for instance, may not be on the level of vocal gods like Dio, Halford, Dickinson, etc. but he is by far a capable singer and his lyrics are even quite intelligent at times. It should also be noted that the vast majority of the material is written by Mr. Snider alone. Anyway, give Stay Hungry a try. Get over your obsession with expecting music (especially metal) to always be serious and technically impressive, and then sit back and enjoy a solid set of classic metal anthems.

I had this casette way back when. I was a juvenile rocker when it came out, I was young and dumb and embarrassingly goofy. Now I'm almost 40 and listen to a very wide variety of music. I happened to be at a friend's house and saw that he had this CD. I played it and couldn't believe the A+ songs on it. I'd always remembered Twisted Sister as some sort of gimmicky glam band that I'd listened to as a child.

I still think "We're not Gonna Take It" is a bit over the top, but "Burn in Hell" and "I Wanna Rock" are rock solid songs. "Stay Hungry" reminded me of Y&T - and I rate Dave Meniketti as one of the greatest. "The Price" is an achingly ripping ballad. What vocals!

Well, I didn't skip through any of the songs (at the friend's house) and I bought the CD from Amazon 2 days later. This one only got better with age.

My very first album.......2006-09-24

This was my very first album I got when I was like 5 years old as a kid in the 80s. Whether it's their hilarously chessey music videos or their gruesome appearance, I still kept a morbid curiosity interest in Twisted Sister to this day and last night saw Dee Snider sing on TV. Dee Snider is a big celebrity and actually I think he has pretty decent taste, if only their videos didn't date so bad. This contains a number of classic tracks like the itle track, We're Not Gonna Take It, Burn in Hell, The Beast and S.M.F. While the band may be unintentionally funny, the music works not only as a nostalgia trip but for Dee Snider's celebrity come back, coming off as bad bone Christian metal without being corny about it like Stryper. Yes, Dee Snider testified at the PMRC hearing that he's a Christian believe or not, and I've been attending church regularly lately so know for a fact that that is true. Take it with some self depricating humor because Dee Snider made a comeback in the late 90s and is still a big star.

Stay Hungry (1984).......2006-09-01

While many people know Twisted Sister best, for "We're Got Gonna Take it" and "I Wanna Rock", they had more to offer than just those two songs. Stay Hungry is a very solid metal album. This is one of those albums that demands to be played loud. From the opener "Stay Hungry" through "S.M.F." the album never gets dull. Besides the obivious hits other highlights include the title track, The Price, Horror Teria, Don't Let Me Down, but the album as a whole is very enjoyable. It's to bad that they couldn't maintain their popularity after Stay Hungry, cause Twisted Sister was actually a pretty good band. This album deserves a spot in any reall rock n roll collection.

Best compilation CD ever.......2007-02-18

Carl Stalling gave me the best musical education I ever had. I'm spending the rest of my life learning the titles and composers of all the hundreds of tunes I first heard in his cartoon scores. I've had this CD ever since it came out, and it still is one of my favorites.

Only a handful of tracks are a complete score from one cartoon; most are snippets from several cartoons edited together with a common theme.

This CD is about a composer and his music, more than about the cartoons for which he composed it. To drive home this point, it includes the score from, of all things, 1939's "The Good Egg." No one would consider "The Good Egg" to be among the best Warner cartoons, but the score, heard by itself, turns out to be a tour de force that is highly representative of Stalling's work. That's what makes this CD such a great listening experience: It was pieced together by musicologists who chose the music based on its auditory qualities, and not on the relative fame of the cartoon associated with it. It is not merely a trip down memory lane (although it is that, too), but is a great creative work in its own right.

Despite the vast amount of Stalling music that exists, this CD provides as ambitious and exhaustive an overview as can be given, and its 1995 follow-up, while also worth having, is but a pale afterthought. There's no following this act.

This CD features music from the Warner Brothers cartoon film scores by Carl Stalling. There are some complete scores and also some "medleys", with clips from various cartoons strung together. Carl Stalling was a master at writing music for cartoons, but something is lost when you just hear the music without seeing the cartoon.

If you harken back to the days when you snuggled on the couch on a Saturday morning with your little ones, and ate donuts and drank juice and watched "Bugs Bunny" you will love these CDs. You'll recognize all the characters and their entrances and their pratfalls...and laugh and say "I've heard that!"...it's a walk down memory lane and a very special one, at that. I highly reccommend these to anyone who loves B Bunny.
Not to mention these are some of the finest musicians you will ever hear...a lesson in classical music, and cartoons.

Carl Stalling was the chief music arranger for Warner Brothers cartoons from 1936 to 1958. He was one of the foremost composers of cartoon music. This disk is much better than "The Carl Stalling Project Volume II."

Warner Brother's King of Music.......2003-12-02

Even if you do not recognize his name, Carl Stalling is a very familiar composer. He wrote the soundtrack for many of our young lives as the composer for Warner Bros.' "Merrie Melodies" and "Looney Tunes" cartoons from late 1930's to late 1970's. Hal Willner has compiled this CD that for the first time lets you hear the music on its own, and lets you realize just how much of the cartoons' impact came from Stalling's music.

Willner sifted through hundreds of cartoons to choose about 40 with the most significant music. He presents the music in a variety of formats. A few tracks provide the soundtrack for a single entire cartoon. Others are medlies from a certain period in Stalling's career or pieces that set a particular mood (such as the "Anxiety Montage"). There are also tapes from recording sessions for 1951's "Putty Tat Trouble" that give insight on how this music was recorded. I couldn't recommend this CD any more highly. (After you've given it a listen, check out a Raymond Scott "best of" album like "Reckless Nights and Turkish Twilights" to see just how many of its tracks are familiar from various cartoons.)

Stalling's music, instead of following the traditional rules of musical structure (exposition, development, theme, variations, etc.), was written to follow the rapid action of cartoons. Stalling would not compromise on this, even if it meant having the 50-piece orchestra play fortissimo for five seconds and then having only one piccolo playing the next four seconds. To ensure a perfect correspondence between the sound and the image, Stalling and the cartoon's directors would agree on a few sketches and on the timing of the action. This enabled Stalling to compose and record the music without even seeing the movie. Carl Stalling was also a master at telling a story through music, with gestures so clear, that there is never any doubt as to his intentions.

Stalling once said, "One problem with cartoons today is that they have so much dialogue the music doesn't mean much." Unfortunately, this statement rings true as we move into 2004. But keeping Carl Stalling from rolling in his grave is not why you need to buy this CD. You need it because it is IMPOSSIBLE to maintain a bad mood while this CD is playing. You need this to listen to as a stress reducer on those tough days. You need this because it is complete childhood in a disc.

I challenge you to turn on your television and watch some Looney Tunes. Turn up the volume and listen while doing something else (wash dishes, write a paper perhaps.) I guarantee you will know exactly what is happening, and to whom. This was the comedic skill and genius talent of Carl Stalling.

As Porky Pig would say: "abieh-abieh-abieh... That's All Folks!"

A Hidden Masterpiece.......2007-03-13

A theme album about Ghosts! Really about love surviving death.
I accidentally heard of Hungry Lucy here at Amazon. I have never known a group that keeps getting better with every listen even when your up to 30 or 40 plus listens. Hungry Lucy has moved up to my favorite band status. I have since purchased their other 2 albums. Apparitions is my favorite album, solid all the way thru, although my favorite individual song of Hungry Lucy is 'In the Circle' off the Glo album. Christa Belle has the most amazing etheral voice I have yet heard in music. No matter what type of music you are into you should check this album out and after a few listens I guarantee you will be spellbound by the talent. Trip Hop of such amazing talent that its for everyone.

This was the first album I bought of theirs. And soon after I had to buy their first and now their third!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have not heard a song I did not like!!!!!!!!! They are the most creative, expansive, dark, beautiful, interesting, mesmerizing, ingenious, groups, ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!! A fan for life!!!!!!!!!! Once you listen to a song from this group, you can not stop listening to all their songs!!!!!!!!!!! If I could give this album more stars i would!!!!!!!!!!!

I love Hungry Lucy. I love this album. Gorgeous, haunting vocals over rich, atmospheric music. Practically every song is a gem, though I'm not big on the remixes. I much prefer the original versions. "Alfred", "Bed Of Flames", and "Bound In Blood" are especially noteworthy, as well as the accapella "Goodbye" which relys on nothing but Christa Bell's beautiful vocals. As a poet myself, I have a deep appreciation for the haunting lyrics.

Okay music, sub-okay lyrics..........2004-07-20

As others have pointed out, "Bound in Blood" is an exceptional song - excellent. Other strong songs: "Blue Dress", "Stretch" and "Bed of Flames". The others ... are weaker.

My biggest complaint though is with the almost monotonous meter of the lyrics. It's not the words themselves that are a problem but the simple, slow, one-syllable-per-measure meter. I keep wanting the singer to spill in a few more words/syllables between beats but the words ... just ... keep ... coming ... out ... like ... this.

The L.A. quartet was already way up in the grrl pantheon when this disc put them over the top. "Hungry for Stink" delivers a primitive, sludgy, and pissed-off sound, but listen closer for the sonic invention on tracks like "Shirley, She Has Eyes" and "Riding With the Movie Star." --Jeff Bateman

If you like Bricks are heavy, your love this cd! The same metal beat but with cooler lyrics. Fast and in your face! My favorite song would be Shirley, its about a drag race that has its frist woman driver. Really awesome. A cd for the metalheads.

A Great Record.......2006-05-12

This is the best L7 album, i analyzed all six of their albums and concluded this one has the best production. The guitar, bass and drums on this album are all outstandingly coordinated. My fav songs are "Andres", "Riding with a Movie Star", "Stuck Here Again", Fuel My Fire", and "She has Eyes". "She Has Eyes" has a very mellow sound to it. This album has alot of different moods. It is an outstanding piece of work. It's a must.

I don't really like this band anymore because I have made a radical life change over the years and I just don't listen to this type of music anymore. But I still had to get on here and give this band some respect. These girls freaken rock, and even though there lyrics aren't quite the best, I've heard a lot worse on the mainstream radio. The don't sugarcoat anything at all. They tell it how they see it through their eyes. The basic fact is, these girls know how to jam. There is no other band that does it quite like them. They'll go down in my musical history books.

I have listened to female rock very much lately. I think it is great that there's a band like this one. They are like metal but somehow punk...let's call it "punk metal" (if it is a good name). Their attitude is like in the most punk albums. The songs are much more metal...at least in this album. I heard at first their greatest masterpiece "Bricks Are Heavy" and then this one. There's a great start for this album: "Andres" is very scary song...the way they sing "Andres, I'm Sorry" is very cold. "Baggage" is a very heavy song and the next one "Can I Run" is also a frightening song...at least if you haven't heard punk or metal before. This album gives many great moments including "Fuel My Fire", "Talk Box", "She Has Eyes", "Questioning My Sanity", "Freak Magnet". This is even heavier than "Brick Are Heavy". I consider L7 as a female Slayer because the songs are really evil. L7 is a great band among Girlschool and The Runaways that also girls and women can rock. The reason why this isn't perfect are the songs "Riding with a Movie Star" and "Stuck Here Again"...I just don't like those songs.

How can these women have more testosterone than me?.......2005-08-11

Do you like your music straight forward with lots of power chords and in your face lyrics? Well, you may or may not like this album. These women definitely have more testosterone in their music than most bands of the genre. What makes them better is that they still play like girls. You'll here a lot more subtext to the lyrics and conterpoints to their melodies than you might expect on first listen. The first track "Andres" is a fantastic opener to the rest of the album. Other big highlights (I can't complain about any song) are "Stuck here again" (if this song doesnt capture frustration for ya then you should be listening to candy J-pop, "she has eyes" (art punk ala the surfers, "shirly" (about another female star in a mans field) and "beat box" (i dreamt of dying like this and it was like this). Buy and listen to this CD. I've had this CD for 11 years now and still enjoy it.

From hearty bellowing to subtle and smoky crooning, this pint-sized founding member of Throwing Muses, the Breeders, and Belly sure can sing. The major complaint regarding this album is that it's so short. Hungry Life was recorded live in front of an intimate audience in the lobby of an abandoned Vermont hotel, during the hottest summer in ages. The singer-songwriter, who's at times seemed uncomfortable and tentative in live performance, is far from either here. Donelly's ease in her Ida-esque, plaintive country-rock has never seemed more apparent. The arrangements sound full and fleshed-out throughout; it's frequently easy to forget the songs were recorded live until the audience members chime in at the end. The string-heavy, soulful take on the Beatles' "Long Long Long" is exceptional, while "Kundalini Slide" is a barn-burner worthy of Neil Young. Yay. --Mike McGonigal

" I had no idea she was still releasing records ! " gasped a reviewer at an internet music page . He is not the only one . Even sites like popmatters and pitchformedia , known for their indie sensitivities , have failed to notice .It might have to do with the fact that Donelly herself has stopped touring and promoting her work some years ago and chose to focuse on her family . There is a rather neglected site representing her at the web were fans fill the message board with wishes for mother's day , her children's birthdays and even talking about the possibility of Belly getting back together .Most entries overall point out the lack of things to actually discuss. Ofcourse this is a peculiar release itself , a live album yet full of new songs , all recorded at a gig at an abandoned hotel in front of a small audience of devoted followers .

Once upon a time Tanya Donelly might have been hyped as the new princess of psychedelic pop with her band's debut album , Belly's " Star " yet it's been a long fifteen years since then and like everyone , the lady has changed . Her music tastes certaintly have . Donelly herself has become an excellent live perfomer and her band supports her solidly but people who have jumped on board because of her precious tracks with the Throwing Muses , the Belly albums or even the exceptional but little heard solo recordings " Lovesongs For Underdogs " and "Beautysleep " are in for a minor dissapointment . That's not to say that this is a poor piece of work because it isn't ( talent doesn't come and go in a day , you know ) . It's just that ...it seems to adress to a different audience . Like the intimate ballads of "Whiskey Tango Ghosts " , this is less mystical and more down-to-earth and on tracks like " World On Fire " the country elements are stronger than ever .

Ofcourse nowone would expect Donelly to still be singing about possesed toys and most fans are just glad she keeps bother to release stuff anyway . Still , the turn her sounds has taken is rather alienating . At least for me it is. Overall , despite having some wonderful moments ( "Littlewing " , " Kundalini Slide " ) " This Hungry Life "is like one of these meetings you have now and then with an old friend who you haven't seen for years : although you're glad for their happiness , you rather realize that you don't have much in common any more .

One of Tanya's best efforts yet.......2007-05-20

Tanya Donelly is one of alternative rock's most important figures. She has been in some of the most celebrated groups of the underground such as Throwing Muses and the Breeders. Of course, her own band Belly, mastered their own style but quickly dissolved.

This album is my favorite Tanya solo album, inching out Beautysleep by just a tad. Here Tanya is able to mix her supreme pop/rock sensabilties and with her love of country standards. She is able to more than hold my attention through the fabulous ten songs. "New England" is a pefect example of what to expect from this album. It's a nice length, nice catchy choruses and of course the highlight of any Tanya album, that beautiful, soothing voice.

So, to anyone hoping for another Belly album (why would you? it's been over ten years now. Some reviewers are just plain ignorant), don't bother. Tanya is and always will be a lasting figure who does not need popular support to sustain her legacy.

I think there may be a little too much "country" feel to the selections this artist performs, which is not up my alley. However, I can see she is talented, and country/folk fans would probably enjoy the disc very much.

As a long-time Tanya Donelly fan, I'm embarrassed to say that I only recently purchased this album. I was aware, back in 2004, that Donelly was recording a live album, but months--and then years--passed, and the album was never released, and so Donelly fell off my radar screen.

Now that I have the album, though, it is much more than I would have expected. Technically, it's a "live" album, but it doesn't sound like a live album. The recording quality is excellent, and were it not for the muffled applause at the end of each track, I might think that the album was recorded in the studio.

I was also pleasantly surprised that the album consists of new material (with the exception of "Days of Grace" which is a b-side from her "Beautysleep" album. Highlights for me are "To the Lighthouse," "Littlewing," "World On Fire," and her cover of the Beatles' "Long Long Long."

Finally, I'm glad to hear Donelly is again supported by a full band. I consider her previous album, the all-acoustic "Whiskey Tango Ghosts" to be a mostly failed experiment. Donelly's music is always at its best when she's playing an electric guitar and has other plugged-in musicians backing her up.

"This Hungry Life" is a very good album, I just wish I had known about it earlier!

On Eagles Wings is most definatly inspired.... Latin Music is great if you understand itm but I have not heard any conversations in Latin lately. The most important aspect of liturgy is the participation of the assembly and if the assembly (or most of it) does not understand what is being sung or said What's the use? Catholic Tradition is great kept alive on CD for those who want to walk down memory lane but it is a Vatican 2 church......deal with it or get out and join one of those rougue churches that say mass in Latin and stop trying to move backwards. There is nothing more powerful than a singing actively participating church.......let's not stiffle the voice of the Body of Christ.

Good But Not Haunting Or Mysterious........2005-02-27

Hello, this music is good but it is not haunting,mysterious,Otherworldly,or timeless like Gregorian Chant or The Latin Mass now all I can say is that we as catholics threw out 1400 years of beautiful music for junk like "On Eagles Wings".Though To the person who said they prefer this to the pre-vatican 2 dirge music you are very close-minded and devoid of art and beauty and judging by what you said you are part of what I call the weak generation of Catholics who are only catholic on paper and have no sense of history for your very beautiful and mysterious church. Most people from that generation see the catholic church only after vatican 2 and you forget about the past councils and teachings of the Catholic church and it's history,I mean there is a reason they kept it so long it was for it's goodness(if it was bad it would not lasted 1400 years) as a priest on EWTN said to those who say "That is so pre-vatican 2" "So was Jesus." You see Latin Is very Beautiful and Mysterious language and it is a very catholic thing I mean whats more catholic then Gregorian Chant or the Latin Mass it's timeless like the church itself we as catholics need to start reclaiming are heritage from the likes of liberal priest and bishops of the 60's generation regardless of what they say there do as you please Mass is not in the spirit of Vatican II which allowed the use of vernacular in the Mass but it did not intend for Latin and Gregororian Chant to disappear it said to preserve it and give it, it's proper place that is what has been the intention of every pope since including this one they have all encouraged the use of Latin and Gregorian Chant in the mass.
How can anyone one not like it,it's very beautiful and it's been around for 1400 years how can one say that singer songwriter stuff which no one will remember in 50 years be better then this it's like seeing heaven and saying you prefer the world(alot of people unfortunatly do this.) Though to ansewer the question of it being to sad yes it is very somber and mournful but thats because the sacrifice of mass is a very solemn ceromony it was never meant to be celebrated in rock or jazz or polka or any other abuses by certain clergy. If alot of these ignorant catholics only knew what took place at the mass they would understand. You know you should be proud of the fact you are catholic because we have many gifts the protestants don't have(In the sacrements,the liturgy,the art and the music.) So I say to you now even you prefer the vernacular have respect and appreciation of what came before you in are Holy Catholic Church. Oh by the way I am 19 about to be 20 and Vatican II was a good thing it retouched are faith as Cardinal Francis Aziz said. Though I believe many people misinterpret it.
I suggest watching EWTN alot or really studying your faith and I like both Novus Ordo And Tridentine Rite.
More of a rant not a review but these songs have there moments and there are many Vernacular songs I like.

Very Good Traditional Hymns.......2004-05-30

It sounds like you are in Church, and that is what I was looking for. I especially like the Ye Watchers and Ye Holy Ones, Peace is flowing like a river, and Let There Be Peace on Earth.

Some of the other songs were better done by other artists. Like Shepherd Me is done better by the original Marty Haugen. This version is good, but not as good as Marty's. And I was not particularly fond of this version of Amazing Grace.

Overall I would recommend you buy a copy for your collection. The songs which are good, are very good.

Disappointing.......2004-04-01

This CD was not at all what I expected. It sounds just like you are in Church. Every song is accompanied by an organ and most of them sung in soprano. The tempo of all the songs is very slow too! I was looking for something I could sing along to, not put me to sleep! On the positive side, there are some beautiful songs, I just wish they were sung more "up beat".

I grew up with the music of the St. Louis Jesuits and this CD is a good representation of the BEST. In the spirit of Be Not Afraid, I am Near You, on Eagles Wings are all songs I loved in high school, college, and adult life. We sing most of these songs regularly at Mass. These are pleasant renditions of inspirational songs that uplift - in my opinion they are far better than much of the dirge music pre-vatican II.

Hard to find slow version of a Sedaka hit song.......2007-06-05

I was in grade school when Neil Sedaka had a hit with "Breaking Up is Hard to Do"...I later bought "The Hungry Years" album (in vinyl!) when it was released because I had liked the song "Breaking Up..." and the newly released duet with Elton John, "Bad Blood." I was in college then. I LOVED his reworking of "Breaking Up Is Hard to Do" in the 1970s, because it really seemed to fit the lyrics--a more melancholy version of the song than the "up tempo" one of the original. The '70s slow version is very hard to find these days. Thankfully, this album has come out in CD. I'm not fond of all the songs on this album, but do really think the reworked version of "Breaking Up..." is a better fit for the lyrics.

Sedaka's solo masterpiece........2005-01-19

While not a Neil Sedaka fan, I was still amazed by the versitility and unique approach to contemporary pop music that Sedaka took with this album. If you go deeper, behind the music (as they say on VH1), you will also be amazed. This is just superb music.Sedaka was part of the "Brill Building" crowd that spawned so many joyful hit singles in the late 50's and early 60's. Another Brill alumni was the great Carole King.The Hungry Years was the second of 2 LP's recorded on Elton John's fledgling Rocket Records label. Elton was at his artistic best in the 70's and was instrumental in Sedaka's comeback to the pop mainstream. It kicks off with "Crossroads", an upbeat but pleading tune of hard times and indesicion...something most of us can relate to in the human condition. "Stephen" was written for composer Stephen C. Foster, a favorite of Sedaka's, who is acclaimed as America's first professional songwriter, and lived and died in the early/mid 1800's. The album also sports a couple of top 40 hits: "Bad Blood" did well for Neil and got lot's of radio airplay, and a cover version of "Lonely Nights (angel face)" was taken to the top of the charts by The Captain and Tennille...although I still prefer Neil's original on this record. "The Hungry Years", the album's title cut, has been covered by many top artists of the day, and gives you a look at something else we all go through before we leave this earth...a yearning for our youthful past. "When you were loving me" is another standout track, and the blusey remake of "Breaking up is Hard to do" is simply a classic reborn, and takes on new life. Anyone who lives in the heart of any big metropolitain area can relate to "New York City Blues", a song about life and death in the big city.Simply stated...this is Sedaka's best work to date. Plugging it in to the new millenium, this record holds more meaning for me now than it did when it was released in the 70's. I'm glad to see that it has made it to CD. The only complaint I have about this record is the fact that Neil, at times, likes to recycle his favorite lyric phrases in some of his other songs. Lines like "tear the damned thing down" and "you'll discover, I'm some kind of lover" sound strange when transplanted to more than one composition. As for the new CD version of this classic LP...I could have done without the bonus tracks. They were mediocre at best, and really do not fit in with the feel of the original presentation. Although I did get a giggle out of "The Queen of 1964".

High on Nostalgia.......2003-12-23

This cd is so incredible! A mix of melancholy, bluesy, funky 70's lounge music. My father bought my mother a stereo for Christmas one year and got her started with the Hungry Years 8 Track. I'll never forget that funny "Ka Chunk" sound between tracks that signaled another great tune was about to start. I would highly recommend this cd to anyone longing to recreate that certain leisure suit ambience that was lost in the 70's. Don't miss this one!

Fair Album, But Uneven.......2003-12-10

It is refreshing that a old artist resurfaces again and makes a impact long after radio has forgotten him. "Bad Blood" is one of the best songs of the easy going 70's but "Hungry Years" is not one of the best albums of the 70's In addition to "Bad Blood" two other classic cuts from the album are two ballads, "Stephen" and "New York City Blues" The album starts out in a fury of energy with "Crossroads" but Neil's orginal " Lonely Nights (Angel Face)later covered by Captain and Tennelle is a letdown but the two songs mentioned above "Stephen" and "Bad Blood follow, two classics, but then the album falls again. This album seems like it doesn't know which direction to go. The orginal album closes with Neil's own remake of his previous hit "Breaking Up is Hard to Do" but this remake which was meant to be slow, is much, much too slow almost to the point you will fall asleep, I don't know how this remake was a top 10 tune in 75 This cd release contains bonus cuts but the only memorable bonus cut is the Queen of 1964
