4 out of 5 stars Awesome music!.......2002-02-13

I first heard the song Unborn Heart on the radio the day I heard my second child's heart beat for the first time! It was so touching! It was great to hear from the fathers perspective!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2000-05-18

A great treat! Dan includes history and inspirations for each song.

5 out of 5 stars More new stuff, please!.......2000-05-12

This great collection just proves that Dan Hill is not only one of Canada's great songwriters (for those of you who hadn't heard of him before: he sort of disovered Celine Dion and later penned her classic "Seduces Me") but also a wonderful singer with a truly recognizable voice.

His tunes are very romantic, intense and personal - to say the least - but they really shine if you're affected by this sort of music.

A brilliant collection that leaves you wanting for more of Dan Hill whose recent releases have been very rare, unfortunately - even though this new collection does include the odd as yet unreleased track.

5 out of 5 stars Great Compilation!.......2000-03-27

This is the ultimate collection of Dan Hill, very nice compilation of his greatest hits, I will recommand any fan to buy this CD.

    5 out of 5 stars A lost masterpiece.......2006-05-11

Like the reviewers below, I consider this to be a masterpiece. When it came out in 1992, I rated it the best album of its year (not the best Americana, or the best singer-songwriter, or the best in a specific category - it simply rated as the best album in any category of music that I heard that year - and I listen to lots).

Yet it sank without trace. I saw just one (pathetic) review of it, and it never made any critical lists or best albums of the year summaries that I ever saw. In fact, I have only ever seen two copies of it (one at a friend's, and one in the shop, which is the one I bought). Why? It is not as if T-Bone is an unknown quantity.

But let me put this album in perspective. There are folk songs on here that Bob Dylan wishes he could have written - and I am a big Dylan fan. Any fan of guitar based singer-songwriting simply needs to hear this album. And above all, this album has what far too many singer-songwriter albums do not - it is profoundly exciting. Not just bombastic histrionics on the guitar, but the excitement that comes from soulful engagement and revelation.

As the songs lift sequentially from one level to the next, and as the soul of the material is progressively revealed, the effect is totally mesmerising. I find the sequencing of songs to be as strong as any that I have ever heard. And I still play the songs regularly, in sequence, 14 years later. For in addition to being a set of great songs, this also a great production - minimalist, sometimes piercing, sometimes reflective, but never banal.

Maybe its time has finally come. T-Bone is about to release the follow-up, and we will see what he has been keeping under his hat for the last decade. And hopefully he will now take his rightful place in the pantheon of American singer-songwriters, as the soulful master that he is. But if you like edge, wit and sensitivity, informed by American folk and country idioms, do not overlook this one.

    5 out of 5 stars A stunning album.......2005-10-31

I already know the world is completely mad, so it comes as absolutely no surprise that not one person appears to have ever heard this excellent album (apologies to both reviewers who obviously have heard and thoroughly enjoyed the object of this review). T-Bone does not have the voice of a siren (thank God) but it's hardly neccessary with these songs as they are full of sharp insight and thoughtful observation, delivered with pathos and wit. The music itself on each and every song is oustanding, the musicianship impeccable and apart from encouraging you to taste and enjoy this for yourself, I can only say that I will be buying the very next T-Bone steak available. Rumour has it that there is a new album in the pipeline.

5 out of 5 stars One of my all time favorites.......2005-06-28

There's nothing like this record. Buy it. If you buy it but don't like it, then you've got no taste. No way to describe it very well, though imagine if "Union Station" tried their hand at punk rock themes and pulled it off blazingly well.

Every couple of years I pull this back out and wonder why I haven't listened to it more often. Some of it really, really hits me where I live and it does so in an edgy, raw way that could have only come out of the USA.

    5 out of 5 stars a criminally overlooked masterpiece.......2004-07-29

THE CRIMINAL UNDER MY OWN HAT was released in 1992 to nearly universal indifference. Just another example of the fact that there is no justice. Actually, the title cut did get some airplay on the short-lived *adult alternative* stations of the time, which is how I first heard it. CRIMINAL is a brilliant, powerful album -- it is T-Bone Burnett's masterpiece, and is among the finest albums of all time, I believe. The songs are superb, and their overall effect is stunning. This is truly an *album* and not just a collection of songs. The musicians are top-notch -- Jim Keltner on drums; Jerry Scheff, Roy Huskey, Jr. and Edgar Meyer on bass; Marc Ribot on guitar; Mark O'Connor on violin and mandolin; Jerry Douglas on dobro. Most of the songs are acoustic, but several are very electric, with driving bass and drums, and ferocious electric guitar (Criminals, Tear This Building Down, Humans From Earth, I Can Explain Everything).

The lyrics range from the sincere and poignant to the sardonic to the hilarious. The overall mood, though, is serious -- intensely serious. I suppose this probably has something to do with why it was not more popular. The title track, for instance, goes 180 degrees against U.S. trend of "getting tough on crime":

"There is no other I can blame, no other I can judge, no other I can cast in shame and require blood."

A great line from "Primitives" is: "The frightening thing is not dying -- the frightening thing is not living."

    The "Humans from Earth" are:

"...out here in the universe buying real estate ... looking for a planet where the air is fresh and the water clear ... you have nothing at all to fear, I think we're going to like it here..."

"Tear This Building Down features the chorus from the old public domain song Sampson & Delilah over a Bo Diddley beat. A lying politician is indicted by the people and pleads pitifully "I can explain everything." The most chilling moment comes last. Over a pretty melody with mandolin and dobro the singer says:

"We killed them at the palace, Babe, and we murdered them in Rome. We knocked them all dead, Babe, then we brought it all back home. There are those who play for money, Babe, there are those who play for fame, there are still those who only play for the love of the game."

    Quite a game to love.

T-Bone hasn't been playing the singer-songwriter game since CRIMINAL, focusing instead on producing other people's records. THE CRIMINAL UNDER MY OWN HAT is going to be hard to top, but I hope T-Bone will try. I hope he's working on a new album after all these years, after the smash success of his soundtrack album OH BROTHER, WHERE ART THOU? The world is full of "broken structures and false idols," but "it's not too late."

5 out of 5 stars nothing like it.......2006-10-01

If you want some fun, light, catchy, short and FUN music, check this out. Marc Bolan is famous for some of his more rockin stuff like Children of the Revolution, but this is almost something else entirely. This is an acoustic duo: guitar/voice and congo/bongo/whatever. And all of the songs are about magical elves and sorcerers, as silly as that sounds it is great...more on that below.

Here is a quick primer on how to appreciate Marc Bolan lyrics. I think people are sometimes too concerned with content of lyrics, or expect to be moved or enlightened, and if something isn't presented with a poetic dignified air or something, then it is [...] Whatever, i know i'm making horrible generalizations. I've read people criticize Marc Bolan for being vacuous party rock or something. Don't trust anyone who makes such claims about Marc Bolan. Listen to some of these jems: you got a hubcap diamond star halo, just like a silet-studded sabre-tooth dream, riding sliding sorceress in your dungarees got me on my knees... (those are from the album 'The Slider', this is just a defense of Marc Bolan in general). He's not making a claim to high-art, so you won't get if you are into that fashion show. You have to disengage your need to seem intellectual. Marc Bolan is party rock a bit, but he is the party rock MASTER!
      "Well you're dirty and sweet
      Clad in black
      Don't look back
      And I love you
You're dirty and sweat oh yea...Bang a gong...get it on..."

4 out of 5 stars Unlike anything before it.......2005-12-19

Where on Earth (or anywhere in the known multiverse for that matter) did this strangely mellifluous cacophony come from? It seemed unlike anything heard before and arrived fully formed onto the Peelian airwaves in the summer of 1968, hot on the heels of the astonishing single Debora (backed by Child Star, which was included on the album). And it was everywhere. You'd go to an outdoor free concert, or to a concert headlined by Fairport Convention, or Roy Harper, or the Edgar Broughton Band, or just about anyone, and there would be these pixies in support, sitting cross-legged on a colourful rug and declaiming a world of doors in oak trees, strange orchestras, Beethoven hair, wizards and weilders of words. Marc would be throwing back his mane and uttering throaty cries and bleats into the air, whilst confidently marshalling an army of sonic colours from his guitar, as Steve Peregrine-Took battled merrily on an array of Eastern-looking percussion instruments and added deft harmonies to Marc's lyrics as appropriate.
It is almost as mysterious now as it was then, although their influence can be heard in contemporary performers such as Devendra Banhart, and there were few clues to be had from Marc Bolan's previous work. This consisted of the two Decca singles The Wizard and The Third Degree and a single for Parlophone called Hippy Gumbo, all of which were relatively conventional moddish beat group ventures; followed by a four month stint in early 1967 with proto punk extremist mod-art band John's Children, for whom he provided lyrics and regularly beat up his highly amplified Gibson guitar with a heavy metal chain onstage, in a stage act which featured mock fights with fake blood - a far cry from Kingsley Mole.
When speaking of Tyrannosaurus Rex, Marc claimed to have been inspired by Ravi Shankar, which explains a little of the eastern influence though Ravi Shankar recordings seldom had the histrionic vocalise which featured on My People Were Fair...
As booklet note writer Mark Paytress observes, rock and roll was nearer the surface, especially on side openers Hot Rod Mama and Mustang Ford, both borrowing from the American surf and hot rod crazes of the early sixties, and The Wizard of course became re-invented as a live Tyrannosaurus Rex staple before being recorded in a third incarnation for the album T Rex.
This edition presents the album in both mono and stereo full versions. Marc Bolan was said to prefer the mono version because of mixing problems which had resulted in a thinness in the stereo version, but these problems seem to have largely overcome on this remaster so I find myself preferring the stereo half, presented as bonus tracks. These seem to be mixes of the same takes, although Dwarfish Trumpet Blues has an extra section, but the notes mention that four of the bonus tracks date from demo sessions recorded for Joe Boyd at Sound Techniques in late 1967.
The other bonus tracks consist of the single Debora (mono), which unlike the album was recorded at Advision, along with an alternate mono take; and early versions of Child Star (mono) and Chateau In Virginia Waters (stereo).
Marc Bolan went on to refine and improve the style he had introduced on this album, but no future albums could have the freshness and impact of this fearsome debut

      4 out of 5 stars Excellent Debut.......2005-01-10

The early T Rex albums are an interesting lot. While the full-blown electric sound that was to develop on later albums such as Electric Warrior had yet to appear on these records, T Rex's first five albums are all remarkably consistent and well worth picking up. The sound on this record (and its follow-ups) is stripped down and simple, but still very effective. Not much more than Marc Bolan's acoustic guitar, some percussion and a few added "psychedelic" effects here and there. But that's really all you need. Marc Bolan always had a way with writing catchy songs with ridiculous, wonderful lyrics, and My People Were Fair... doesn't stray away from that model. It blows my mind to think that this album was recorded over 35 years ago because it's aged remarkably well.

Contrary to what a previous reviewer has stated, Bolan's vocals are not terrible on this record. His voice is less developed here than it would be on the later T Rex recordings (I noticed more of a quaver in his voice), but he sounds far from being a "retarded kid making a pathetic attempt to sing". In fact, I think he sings quite fine here if you ask me. His voice is admittedly a bit of an acquired taste, but then again so is T Rex in the first place.

At times My People Were Fair... sounds remarkably similar to some of the "freak-folk" artists (Devendra Banhart, Joanna Newsom) who are currently all the indie rage. While this may not be the best entry point into T Rex's early work (A Beard of Stars is hands down the best from this period), it's still an excellent record.

2 out of 5 stars Weak debut album.......2004-10-10

My People Were Fair And Had Sky In Their Hair... But Now Their Content To Wear Stars On Their Brows (1968.) Tyrannosaurus Rex's first album.

Marc Bolan would become a rock and roll superstar in the 1970s, as a part of the glam rock outfit T. Rex. However, before that incarnation of the band was created, an earlier version of his band, called Tyrannosaurus Rex, existed. This band isn't thought of as being a glam rock act like T. Rex, but rather as being somewhat of a progressive rock outfit similar to bands like sixties Pink Floyd and Procol Harum. The band's first album was released in 1968. Its title might just be the longest album title in rock and roll history. How does My People... measure up? Read on for my review.

I had really great hopes for this album, knowing it was Marc Bolan singing on it, and that many people had compared the band to bands like the sixties version of Pink Floyd and Procol Harum. Unfortunately, my expectations for the album were much too high. As soon as I started listening, I was gravely disappointed. Bolan's vocals were TERRIBLE. On this album, he sounds like a retarted kid making a pathetic attempt to sing. This is only made worse by the fact that so many of the tracks sound alike. Admittingly, there are a few salvagable tracks (mostly on the latter half of the album), but most of this album is disposable. I DO like the album's cover, but obviously, like with books, you can't judge an album by its cover. This album is NOT RECOMMENDED, unless you are a Marc Bolan completist.

Currently (as of October 9, 2004), there are two versions of this album readily available, although neither one is sold in America. One is the import version that Amazon sells. This is a good version in that it combines the stereo and mono versions of the album onto a single disc. The other version is a Russian reissue. It doesn't have any bonus tracks, but it DOES have an entire other album on the disc - Zinc Alloy And The Hidden Riders Of Tomorrow. I would have to recommend the latter version, as it is less expensive and has two totally different albums on one disc.

I was gravely disappointed in this album, but fortunately, it wouldn't serve as a premonition of Bolan's musical future. Not long after releasing this album, he would find his sound as a classic glam rock artist, and grow to be well-liked by audiences up until his death in a car accident on September 16, 1977. Skip this album unless you're a Bolan completist. Start with Electric Warrior or a hits compilation if you're new to Bolan's work.

5 out of 5 stars Best Album ever!.......2006-07-08

I got curious after reading the book of the same name by John Donoghue. The cover of the book gives a sideways nod to the album cover, there are various references to the Lowest of the Low throughout the book, both cryptic and out there in the open ....and as I loved the book I thought why not give the Album that he clearly likes so much a go.
      ...the best decision I've made!
What a fantastic CD. All the songs are winners!
If I could take just one CD on a desert island, this would be the one.
I can't really praise SMB high enough....my favourite CD of all time

5 out of 5 stars Withstands the Test of Time.......2005-12-03

It is amazing that an album that was "released" over 14 years ago can still be relevant today. I put "released" in quotation marks because it was not promoted by a major record label but rather, was an independent release that sold by word of mouth and by being sold at the Low's concerts.

"Shakespeare My Butt" is a literate effort which mixes melancholy, sentimentality, humor, and leftist politics. A great example of the Low's wry sentimentality and, in my opinion, one of the best verses ever turned in a rock album comes in "Letter From Blibao:" "I was never much on dreams/And they were never big on me/And I can't dream my way home/From a graveside by the sea."

Each song is great in its own way but what is truly great is the way in which the album flows from start to finish - there are no weak links on this disc. "Shakespeare My Butt" has to be my hands-down choice for all of you who want to rock out and think at the same time.

5 out of 5 stars Consistently Thrilling, Nearly Perfect Album.......2004-11-28

One of the absolute best albums of the last 15 years if not of all time. Its consistent brilliance song to song is stunning. And after more than a decade, it's still in my regular rotation. Filled with just the right mix of attitude, angst, humor, intelligence, and earnestness that you can't help but sing along to each song. This album played a huge part in the golden age of Toronto "alternative" music along with The Tragically Hip and Barenaked Ladies. No jukebox in Buffalo dares to exist without it so bargoers can call up "Rosy and Grey" whenever the spirit moves them. It's so good it may have destroyed the band--fortunately it just knocked them out for 10 years (they're back now). If you like rock and roll, you'll love this album.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best Albums ever made.......2004-05-29

This is a fantastic album and continues to find its way into my CD player on a regular basis. A great variety of intelligent, fun and catchy songs which are well put together. A bargain at twice the price.

      5 out of 5 stars an all-time top 5 album.......2004-04-10

and since i have over 2000 of them, that's pretty high praise.

i actually had never heard of the band before i heard a song 'gamble' playing at the patricia hotel bar in saskatoon around 1994. i needed to ask the dj who they were - pretty embarassing seeing as i was working in a comics / record store at the time.

so, i used my staff privileges to order copies of both of their albums - and was blown away. the 2d one, 'hallucigenia' had 'gamble', 'city full of cowards' and 'black monday' as instant sing-along classics. 'shakespeare my butt' sucker punched me out with the politically-minded 'hand of magdelena' (about an ill-fated love affair during the spanish civil war), 'letter to bilbao' and 'henry needs a new pair of shoes'. i was ecstatic when i heard they were coming to town on tour.

but it was not to be - they broke up 2 weeks before they were scheduled to play at louis' (the campus pub). colour me devastated. but at least we had their 2 classic cd's for posterity.

ron hawkins went on to produce a couple of solo discs before fronting an equally good, and equally unrecognized band 'ron hawkins and the rusty nails' before hookng up long enough with his LOTL mates to survive a single reunion tour (saw them in calgary - yay !!). the live cd released in conjunction with that tour, 'nothing short of a bullet' very much captures their live feel and adds an extra kick to some of the songs found on 'shakespeare my butt'.

        5 out of 5 stars a wonderful gift.......2007-07-07

I did not know who Hayley Westenra was until I saw her performing on PBS. She has a really beautiful voice. This cd is a Christmas cd that she has recorded. Some songs are traditional Christmas songs and others are inspirational tunes. I recommend it.

1 out of 5 stars I loved her other cd's but not this one........2007-03-05

I was disappointed when i recieved this cd. Not worth the price.

        4 out of 5 stars soothing music.......2007-02-11

Hayley Westenra is the best. I thought this would be Valentines Day music or the like, but it is more like simulated Christmas / religious. The title does say "gift", but when I read the description before buying I did not think Christmas music.

5 out of 5 stars Haley Westerna My Gift to You CD.......2007-01-05

Great CD. She has a remarkable voice.

5 out of 5 stars Celtic Woman and Haley Westenra.......2006-12-14

Celtic Woman is probably the best kept secret in the music world. I caught their show on our KCPT public television station and thought it was the best show they have ever aired. I have told my friend about Celtic Woman and they rave about them also. My favorite of all of the girls is Haley Westenra, but all of them are super and can stand alone on their individual talent. I can't say enough about the violin playing girl on the dvd, she is remarkable and mezmorizing to say the least. If you appreciate good quality entertainment, you can't miss with a purchase of Celtic Woman.
