Smokey-voiced chanteuse Madeleine Peyroux's third CD is a lovely collection of after-hours ruminations and should confirm her rise to fame. Credit producer Larry Klein for doing a bang-up job with the album's sound: the elegant, pared-down arrangements are all brushed drums, acoustic guitars, and cool organ licks. But of course it's Peyroux's voice that brings it all home--preferably one where the shades are drawn, embers are smoldering in the fireplace, and the white wine is kept dry. Two-thirds of the songs are well-chosen covers, including a duet with k.d. lang on Joni Mitchell's "River"; a relaxed version of Fred Neil's "Everybody's Talkin'," from Midnight Cowboy; a delicately lilting samba take on Leonard Cohen and Anjani Thomas's title track; Serge Gainsbourg's "La Javanaise," performed in the original French; and Charlie Chaplin's "Smile," from Modern Times. The four originals, all coauthored by Peyroux, easily keep up with such august company, especially "I'm All Right"--written with Klein and Walter Becker, it captures the easy sophistication of Becker's regular band, Steely Dan. Fans of Norah Jones (whose collaborator Jesse Harris cowrote three of the songs) should gobble up this album, but Peyroux is no mere imitator: She's her own, very real thing. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Album Description
Madeleine Peyroux doesn't simply interpret songs, she possesses them
and vice versa. Half the Perfect World is the much-anticipated follow-up to Peyroux's breakthrough album, Careless Love, which drew critical raves from around the world and sold more than a million copies. This time around, Peyroux focuses primarily on songs written by artists from her lifetime, including Leonard Cohen, Tom Waits and Fred Neil. The album also features an unforgettable duet with k.d. lang on the Joni Mitchell classic "River" and four original songs co-written by Peyroux, including the single "I'm All Right" which she penned with producer Larry Klein and Steely Dan's Walter Becker. Half the Perfect World is a sublime showcase for Peyroux's eloquent, understated delivery and timeless one-of-a-kind voice.
Customer Reviews:
Half the Perfect World.......2007-07-03
I really love her voice but I am not too keen on several of her arrangements of well known hits on this CD. Overall I was a bit disappointed.
among the top current vocal jazz artists.......2007-06-27
Madeleine Peyroux stands out among current jazz singers - the comparisons to Lady Day are inevitable and appropriate. But, to say the obvious, Ms. Holiday has been gone a long time, and it's high time a talented singer picked up something of her approach and ran with it. I'd say Madeleine Peyroux is as good as any to handle this golden baton.
On Half the Perfect World Madeleine Peyroux takes possession of the melodic, pocket true style of jazz singing that I prefer. It's a style that 'sells the song' exquisitely, and the result is a record that is true to jazz but also quite approachable.
It's excellent; I reserve the fifth star for groundbreaking work, and I don't think this one qualifies as pioneering. I'm sure I'll play it often and for a long time, and I look forward to following Ms. Peyroux's work in the future.
Sounds just like a modern day you know who...........2007-06-26
I've been a Billie Holiday fan for years and had heard of Madeleine Peyroux and that she sounded like Billie, but I never took it seriously. I figured no way - how can someone sound like Billy Holiday? Well, it turns out Madeline Peyroux can! I've been listening to all of her albums and while this one isn't my favorite (I like "Careless Love" the best.) It is a good album and I think she is trying to break out a little from the Billie mold here (though just a teensy bit.) Clearly though with all her music she *is* trying to sound like Billie (she's not exactly singing heavy metal is she?) and at first I wasn't sure how I felt about such a perfect imitation. In the end I figured who cares? Might as well stop resisting and enjoy. The fact is this is good music and there are worse things then doing a near perfect impression of one the most famous singers of all time.
Keep it coming...............2007-06-18
Madeleine's personal problems are all too well known; they may have affected the quantity of her output, but the quality remains superb.
This album is a follow-on to "Careless Love", and lives up to all of our high expectations. Madeleine is, once again, covering proven winners, and she's so good that she makes them her own. The duet, "River", with k. d. lang is a particular joy. From her much earlier album, "Dreamland", Madeleine has shown an equal facility in English and French, which is to be expected, given her years in Paris.
If you want to here jazz done right, don't miss this; the girl can REALLY sing.
Great cd.......2007-06-12
Not as catchy as her 2nd album but a great cd for anyone who loves her musical style.

"A Perfect Circle is not a side project," proclaim the members of Perfect Circle. It's a caution worth heeding, since the most identifiable name in the band is that of vocalist Maynard James Keenan, lead singer of Tool. On the other hand, one wouldn't be much inclined to file this one under "side project" anyway. The musicians involved go to great lengths to create something distinctive, and if the uniformity of sound can be attributed to the fact that guitarist Billy Howerdel (whose previous songwriting credits include Tool, the Smashing Pumpkins, and David Bowie) is responsible for the lion's share of the music, well, the others aren't exactly marching in lockstep. Keenan's vocals here are quite different from anything heard from him before. Subtle, thoughtful, sober, they're a far cry from Keenan's work with Tool, which is what makes this album more than a side-project curiosity. Mer de Noms has a life all its own. --Genevieve Williams

wonderful album.......2007-07-12
If like me you like Tool's music but want something more melodic you will enjoy this album. Maynard is definately one of the best singers in the world, and in A Perfect Circle he shows a gentler side of his voice which is very refreshing to hear.
Debut Album from A Perfect Circle.......2007-07-07
Great album from start to finish. Maynards voice is absolutly amazing all over. Great guitar tone, and drums are expertly performed by Josh Freeze. Its a shame were not going to get anymore perfect circle anymore. Billy Howerdail is lame now.
Aenima and Mer de Noms.......2007-07-06
Both cd's arrived as expected in excelent condition, together in one package, and on time.
One of my Top Ten CDs of recent times.........2007-06-26
Like I said for Thirteenth Step, these are as good as it gets... Can't find any fault w/them & the 2 CDs deserve the accolades they've gotten.
Came late to the APC show, but really liking it (except eMotive, of course).
An Insidiously Great Album.......2007-04-13
I don't write many reviews, but this album simply deserves it. I actually tossed this album onto my pile of cds to get rid of after only a couple of listens, and recalling this amazes me now, because I can't tell you just how much I have grown to love this album. I made the mistake of listening to the songs that had been released as singles, pretty much ignoring the rest, because the singles did not grab me. Something made me pull the cd off the pile and listen to it a few more times. People call this album soft (at least compared to Tool), but it really rocks at times. The thing that gets to me is the dichotomy of hard, metal music mixed with astonishing beauty. The vocals and music mix in sonic perfection several times throughout the album, and these moments alone make me listen again and again to some of the songs. I admit that the main singles have still not grown on me. Amazingly, the songs I thought I liked the least are the ones that grew to be my favorites. I think 'Thomas' is one of the most beautiful songs I have heard. Three other songs on the album are rated 5 stars in my ITunes- 'Thinking of You', 'Magdalena', and 'Sleeping Beauty'. I strongly recommend that anyone who loves a broad range of music give this set of music several listens before judging it.

This & Mer de Noms are about as good as it gets..........2007-06-14
Instead of trying to come up with yet more accolades for this & Mer de Noms, I'll just say they are among my most-played favorites so far this Millennium. A young guy @ work turned me on to APC & boy am I grateful!
Although impossible to account for musical tastes, also like Alice in Chains, Blind Melon, Porno for Pyros, Days of the New and Live for some ideas.
But stay away from eMotive if you know whats good for you:)
One of the Best Rock Albums this Decade.......2007-05-03
I didn't buy any other album in 2004 because of Thirteenth Step. Hypnotic bass and drum rhythms mix with guitar that is alternately peaceful and aggressive. Add in Maynard's voice with dream-like lyrics on top and you get an all-around awesome record. Softer songs like "The Nurse Who Loved Me" help break up the aggressive, smash-your-head-through-a-brick-wall sounds that come out in songs like "The Outsider." The songs often build from foggy, dream-like moods to an inevitable critical mass where they explode out of the speakers. This is one of my top ten albums.
I love Perfect Circle.......2007-03-12
I wasn't disappointed and years later still listen all the time.
APC's Best .......2006-12-25
No words can describe how much I love Thirteenth Step. I am an avid fan of Tool and thats what lead me (like many others) to A Perfect Circle. At first I was hesitant about buying this album because I didn't think that it would be as good as Mer De Noms, but after listening to The Noose, The Package and Weak and Powerless, I knew I was wrong. This is one of the most beautiful and haunting albums I have ever had the pleasure of listening to.
Buy this album. The Noose, The Package, The Outsider, and Pet are worth alone the price of the cd.
cuz they don't give a f#*k about you like i do.......2006-11-15
this cd is by far one of the greatest things i have ever heard, and this is coming from a guy who listens to slipknot, trivium, korn and stuff like that but i've always had a softer side to and this album pulls it right out of me.
right from the begining i knew that the slow drum tapping beat and low bass where gonna go somewhere and sure enough at 4:09 comes the first hard riff and it was so awsome how they led up to it though that the whole rest of the cd i could'nt switch or fast forword any of the other songs, i had to hear them all the way through. even when it came to "the nurse who loved me". at first i was like, huh , eeh, but after a couple times listening and hearing the lyrics i won't change it, even to the day if it comes on in my car my friends are listening to it, like it or not.
all the radio song where great, if you don't know them you must have been living under a rock. but when i got this cd i got it with "aMOTION" THE DVD-REMIX CD SET, and when i got home i watched the dvd first and saw the "counting bodys like sheep" video and loved it, then come to my suprise on "thirteenth step" number 10 "pet" has the same lyrics but is definently not the same song(if you've heard, you know what i mean)but it was'nt til later when i got "eMOTIVe" that my friend told me it was a complete cover album pretty much, then after i listened to it i saw that they covered their own song "pet"(who else has ideas like this) and ever since i figured that out "pet" has always been my favorite song on this album. and this album is a most have for ANYBODY!!!
Cuidense my gente y pa'lante los latinos.
Eh...?.......2007-06-13
Being a fan of Zion y Lennox, and Zion himself, I was really stoked for the release of his album. Sadly, I didn't think much of it. There are just a handful of songs that are worth listening to. A handful. The rest are not even worth listening. 'Money' made me cringe. A lot.
I'm very disappointed. I expected a lot better.
THE PERFECT ALBUM.......2007-06-07
THIS ALBUM IS CRAZY IT HAS EVERYTHING JUST LIKE DADDY YANKEE ZION TRIES TO CROSSOVER BUT IN ONLY A COUPLE OF SONGS BUT UNLIKE DADDY YANKEE THEY SOUND GOOD ZION HAS A LITTLE BIT OF EVERYTHING THE FIRST SONG SETS THE TONE A MUST HAVE VERY GOOD ALBUM
Loved it!!!! -------> Such versatile style ...unlike any other...........2007-06-07
I bought the album yesterday and listened through the whole thing a couple of times. Zion is so diverse, so versatile, there is no other artist in this genre like him. Plus he is dipper dapper......I love his style and I am sooooooooo happy he has blessed us with his solo effort!
Much love to Zion! I wish you all the success you deserve!
I love the new album, the only artist I will pay $$$$ for....

Maynard James Keenan is known for venting his personal angst through the abstract metal of his former band Tool and the poisoned art rock of his current outfit A Perfect Circle. On the group's third full-length release, however, the songwriter drops the high drama and gets blunt: War is bad. Politicians are evil. The world is doomed. To support his case he delivers a handful of politically charged originals and unusual Eastern-influenced covers of crusty anti-war anthems like John Lennon's "Imagine" and Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On." You could never accuse Keenan of being predictable. --Aidin Vaziri

Customer Reviews:
I'm glad I didn't pay for this garbage........2007-07-13
It's easy for hollywood to sit in their mansions and cry "can't we all just get along?" but for us military men trying to protect this great nation from those that want to kill you because of their religion, it's not that simple, and a round piece of plastic full of noise isn't going to stop a taxicab full of artillery rounds from detonating in front of your beverly hills condo.
This CD is NOT a contradiction of the past of Maynard's creative identity, but it is stinky.......2007-06-16
3.5 Stars, actually.
First, I have a couple of things to touch on.
Using Tool's "Learn to swim" as an excuse to say the CD is inconsistant with what Maynard has written in the past, isn't a valid argument. That song is his attempt at waking those up whom he wants to see swim.
There's such an incredible amount of people who acknowledge the world's insanities and don't do a thing about them. Nothing at all. To them, he says learn to swim. To those superficial individuals content in living an extremely materialistic life, he says learn to swim. This CD doesn't contradict that belief, on the contrary, it enforces it only in the same vein of wanting people to wake up. ESPECIALLY, when they hear the song AEnima and go along, paying for [...] jobs, scientology, and feeding into an incredible cycle of fear. His passion pooped this CD out, his passion pooped Aenima out. There's no different types of poops. Poop is poop, Maynard is Maynard.
He's not contradicting his beliefs or messages, he's reinforcing them and making them clearer in this CD- especially to the individuals incapable of deciphering and comprehending the complexities and metaphors in AEnima. If a person is told to learn to swim, you can take two routes: Literally (Learn to swim in water) or metaphorically (Learn to swim in the TRUE reality of horror in this world). If you can't "learn to swim", not only are you refusing to see the world for what it is, but you're becoming a slave to a brainwashed culture. You're not human, you're not independant, you're a drone and deserve to die. It's harsh, but true.
. . . There is no contradiction except by the individuals who are content in finding and using something to rile up negativity. And fear. Hell, Maynard is on Rage Against The Machine's first CD (1992) shouting, "I've got no patience now, so sick of complacence now. I've got no patience now, so sick of complacence now. Sick of sick of sick of sick of you. Time has come to pay!" No contradiction on this eMOTIVE, pure Maynard.
Listening to A Perfect Circle and Tool won't make you blind, it will only attempt to open your eyes. Maynard James Keenan is one of the greatest lyricists in history and one can't possibly accuse him of contradicting his creative identity when he's reinforced it in so many ways- ways in which he won't change so those incapable of actually working and listening can see. He's stubborn, but the best artists are.
In Passive, Maynard wails, "Wake up and face me, don't play dead." He's singing that to the world, and it has to be f*cking frustrating to have so many people misinterpret what he has to say. Especially when they twist it into making people "Blind". Hence, in Passive, "'Cause maybe someday I'll walk away and say- You f*cking disappoint me." I'd be disappointed too.
That all stemmed from a review and comments I read on here agreeing with it. And, WELL, after saying and ranting about that, I'll get to the CD.
This CD isn't in the same vein as any other A Perfect Circle CD and there is a chance that if you're a big a fan of their first two CDs, you won't like it. No song really sounds the same, but that is mostly because of Maynard's task of taking a song and completely redoing it. If you heard the songs' original versions, and liked them, you might not like this.
I'm actually a fan of this CD, if you couldn't tell already. Though, this was the first A Perfect Circle CD I heard and I'll be honest- I hated it. So, so, so, so much. Though, a year later I got their first two CDs and they became my favorite band. Really. Then, well, I crawled toward this one scared and was delightfully surprised how much I liked it. So, compared to how much I didn't like it, it's a good CD. But, seeing it from the perspective of a person not obsessed with A Perfect Circle, it isn't the best CD they have.
Gimme Gimme Gimme highlights the world's faith in the insane, it's one of the best songs. Passive IS the best song on this CD. Imagine is a close second and is almost better than the original. MAYBE it is, but I might be too scared to admit that. What's Going On can be the fourth best song on here. Counting Bodies Like Sheep is a remake of their song Pet, and, well, I'm not that large of fan, but it can be sixth best, just because . . . Gimme Gimme Gimme is number five. All the rest, I can't say I'm a HUGE fan of. But, if you listen long enough, eMOTIVE grows on you.
A Ambient Folk band kidnapped Perfect Circle and recorded this album.......2007-05-16
If your a APC fan save yourself the money and just get the song passive off of itunes. The rest of the album is like a folk/ambient experiment. If you like tool/apc this is not the album you were hoping for. The song passive is awesome though.
You'll either like it, or dislike it.. just like every other album in the world........2007-05-01
This type of album is just one of those albums that many will agree, and many more will disagree. People are very protective of their political beliefs, and no one, not even a celebrity can change their minds if they are true (the people's beliefs that is). Like mentioned earlier, not all of the songs are originals.. there are indeed a few covers (that were well covered in my opinion). That being said, I like the general 'peace' vibe coming from the album; almost every song has a peaceful, relaxing melody to it (which is clearly what they were going for). That is one thing I must say of Maynard.. with Tool and APC, the way he emotes the lyrics is flawless. He projects whatever feeling the song is going for.. if it's a song with a lot of anger, he projects that anger. While many disagree with the politcal views the album is voicing, realize that it is still, entertainment. You don't necessarily need to agree with the musicians, or even understand what they are talking about, to enjoy it or appreciate it (in an artistic stance). While I really enjoyed this album, you may hate the entire thing.. no one can tell you whether it's 'good' or 'bad'.. what's great for one person, may not be for the other.. even if they have a similar taste in music. Listen to the clips provided for you, and use your own judgement.
Didn't care for it too much.......2007-04-01
I found myself trying really hard to get into this one when ultimately the strain proved too great. It has a couple of good tracks but what happened to the style of music heard in Mer De Noms? That's where the fan base is at, and until APC delivers, then their future might be a little turbulent.

Built to Spill's three previous indie releases (on C/Z, Up, and K) established a new pop standard, born from lo-fi experimentation, carefully crafted hooks, plaintive vocals, and brilliant, snaky guitar lines. For their major label debut, Perfect from Now On, frontman Doug Martsch, who leads a revolving cast of musicians, has created his most ambitious album to date. Gone are the compact, simple ditties that characterized the band's recent recordings, replaced by the kind of longer epics that typified its C/Z debut, Ultimate Alternative Wavers. The songs--some clocking in at eight or nine minutes in length--combine the laidback intensity of Pink Floyd and Neil Young with a Beatles-meet-Pavement modern, pop aesthetic. It's at once dreamy, spooky, and spine-tingling and if there's any truly unexplored territory in rock music, you can be sure Built to Spill are in the vanguard. --Adem Tepedelen
Customer Reviews:
Magnificent New Beginning for this band in 1997.......2007-03-30
Perfect From Now On is Built to Spill's third album and gained widespread attention when it was released in 1997. A long vast & epic voyage through 8 noise shifting songs. Perfect From Now On was at the time their tightest sounding album yet, and first major-label release on Warner Bros. Perfect from Now On is filled w/ wailing guitar effects and groove-laden blissful jams. So many twists and turns throughout. Just more of a broadened scope, deeper range and timelessness here.
Yes, these are LONG songs, approaching times between 5 and 9 minutes each. This release reminds me a bit of Neutral Milk Hotel. PERFECT FROM NOW ON is filled with colorful rawness, a beautiful mess.
While their next album "Keep It Like A Secret" is catchier, shorter and poppy.
At this time(1997) the band consists of Doug Martsch: singer/guitarist - his vocals are farther ranging, more matured & more exquisite then on "There's Nothing Wrong With Love," Along w/ band -also adding MORE muscle, depth & volume; takes it's listener on a real experience of adventure
Brett Netson: bass & guitar; and drummer Scott Plouf.
Built to Spill is one of the more important talented bands that more people need to hear. Constantly changing styles and band members w/ each release. And this is their most creative, mesmerizing, most psychadelic sound put out by them. Favorite song: "Kicked It In the Sun." - I also LOVE opener: "Randy Described Eternity" - "I Would Hurt A Fly" - "Velvet Waltz" - "Untrustable/Part 2."
To me this is close to PERFECTION and my Favorite Built to Spill record so far as of 2007. 5 stars!
Listen to it at least six times.......2006-11-21
All I have to say is if you give this album six listen throughs, you'll be done for. The first time I put this in a didn't care for it, but I had loved, "What's Wrong with Love" and I had heard this was an amazing album, so I kept at it. By the 3rd listen I knew something was up, something way beyond the surface. What at first just seemd liked a mass of loud guitars fell apart into a deep, rich, melodic symphony of gigantic porportions. By the time I got to listen number 6 I was done for. Now I can't get this album out of the CD player. Where with other albums I seem to be able to wear them out after a number of listens, this one just won't go away. This is an album with a very large complex number of layers. Get it now!
first album of theirs that i've heard; got me hooked.......2006-08-29
I found songs on this album from online music sites that play songs within the same or similar genre as artists or songs that you input. I heard a couple songs from this album, then decided to get the album. After listening through it a few times, I got hooked. This isn't your conventional guitar/bass/drums rock band. These guys implement all types of sounds into their music. Though their songs are long (they range from 6 to 11 minutes each), they are great to listen to.
This is Music.......2006-08-05
Perfect From Now On was hard for me to get through at first, but after each listen I grew to love it, and it is now one of my favorite albums.
I say to the person who just bought this album, or is even considering this album, to have patience.
Amazing.......2006-04-26
I can't believe it took me until 2006 to discover Built to Spill...It only took one listen to their earlier release "There's Nothing Wrong With Love" to decide that I'll be spending the rest of the year catching up on all their music. For the moment, I can't stop playing this CD.

God, this is one of the best albums this year for sure!!.......2007-07-13
I can't believe that I just read a few days ago that A Perfect Murder decided to break up...especially after just listening to one of the most brutal & satisfying metal releases this year & FOREVER! I own 'Unbroken' which I liked very much, but the album after that one, 'Strength Through Vengeance' sounded too polished & didn't seem to have a raw enough edge, but 'War of Aggression' blows both away easily! Metal fans don't pass this up! And boys from the band, PLEASE consider reforming again!
A Perfect Murder - 'War Of Aggression' (Victory Records).......2007-06-24
Powerful five piece from Montreal. Very heavy, intense and bone-trashing metal to be taken in. Better cuts to rattle the neighbor's foundations with are opening title track "War Of Aggression", "Within", "Disconnect", "Sadist" and the in-your-mug "Legion Of Doom". Just might appeal to loyal follows of the likes of Corrosion Of Conformity, Hatebreed, Down and maybe Testament. Give this one a chance.

Henley--arguably the most talented member of the Eagles--had toyed with playful pop hooks on his I Can't Stand Still solo bow in 1982. Two years later he got down to business on this brainy, politics-themed sophomore disc, which indicted his native Hollywood as venomously as "Hotel California" once did. Surfaces were still somewhat glossy--there's no denying the foot-tapping elan of "Boys of Summer or "All She Wants to Do Is Dance." But the vitriol roiling just beneath those surfaces was deep, intellectual stuff. Henley, as he continued to prove with the more eloquent The End of the Innocence a few years later, is someone his fans can neither underestimate nor predict. Can we say the same of Glenn Frey or Randy Meisner? --Tom Lanham

Don Henley - Not His Best But A Good One.......2007-05-09
Henley seems to take a lot of flack from people with similar musical tastes as my own, but I have always thought he was a great songwriter. Yes his music is fairly pedestrian, and he appears to be an average drummer, but I think his lyrics are often extremely clever and he has always been a great singer. Up until the early 80's Henley was best known for being the drummer, singer, and songwriter for The Eagles. After The Eagles broke up in 1981 Henley went solo and had a very successful run of radio hits and platinum albums. "Beast" is his second solo record and although I think his next one was better this one was still solid. Several huge hits came from this album including "Boys Of Summer", "All She Wants To Do Is Dance" two songs that though massively overplayed were pure pop gems. Other highlights include the country tinged "You're Not Drinking Enough". The title track "Building The Perfect Beast" is full of patented Henley social commentary. My favorite song on the album, "A Month Of Sundays" is a song about a farmer loosing his livelihood in the Regan era 80's. This is the kind of track that Henley does best and it really works here. "Sunset Grill" is another great song and serves as a kind of sequel to "The Sad Café" from The Eagles "Long Run" album. Henley gets plenty of help on this album from well known musicians including most of Tom Petty's band, Lindsay Buckingham, Charlie Sexton and others. This is not Henley's best album, but it has quite a few really good songs on it.
Not favourite but its OK........2007-03-08
I bought it because I love "Boys of the summer". Thats all. Others songs are good but to be honest it is not kind of music that I like. So if You like rock, whatever it means, you are gonna enjoy it.
A POET WHO WRITES FOR END TIME PROPHECY.......2005-12-30
ACTUAL MILES, AND BUILDING THE PERFECT BEAST cd's ARE WITHOUT A DOUBT TRUTH WHICH SET YOU FREE, AS 'ALL SHE WANT'S TO DO IN DANCE' IS A DAVID BOWIE MUST COVER SONG. BLUE JEANS AREN'T MADE FOR WOMEN WHO REFUSE TO REMAIN FEMINE. LET'S NOT FORGET WHOM OUR FOCUS AND SPIRITUAL SONG'S ALL COMES FROM, AS IN OBEDIENCE TO "THE GARDEN OF ALLAH." NEVER FORGET YOUR 'FUNKETELECHY' AS DELIVERED BY GEORGE CLINTON AND DON HENLEY, FOR SOME ARE ANGELS UNAWARE.
A perfect album!.......2005-07-19
The Eagles' drummer Don Henley released his second solo album, this one,in late 1984 after signing with Geffen Records. His solo debut,I CAN'T STAND STILL was released in 1982 on Asylum, the same label that the Eagles recorded on. Henley's fellow Eagle Glenn Frey was enjoying success as a solo artist as well. Eagles fans enjoyed Henley taking the lead on some of their hits like HOTEL CALIFORNIA,LIFE IN THE FAST LANE,THE LONG RUN,BEST OF MY LOVE and ONE OF THESE NIGHTS. On this hit album are the hits THE BOYS OF SUMMER,ALL SHE WANTS TO DO IS DANCE and SUNSET GRILL(Cher covered the latter). I also heard a cover of TBOS,but I don't remember the artist who covered it. Henley's next album,THE END OF THE INNOCENCE,released in 1989,was a much bigger hit.
One Of Don Henley's Two Best Solo Albums.......2005-05-19
BUILDING THE PERFECT BEAST is one of Don Henley's two best solo albums. "The Boys Of Summer" is about trying to hold onto the past, all along knowing things will never be the same, a philosophy that led me to put looking good for my favorite actresses as a higher priority than going back to my old school's Thanksgiving Dinner and Graduation. Other great tracks include the political protest rock of "All She Wants To Do Is Dance", the anti-inertia ballad "A Month Of Sundays", and "Sunset Grill", a hymn to a burger place whose hamburgers won't make you sick. Overall, BUILDING THE PERFECT BEAST is an essential album for anyone who cares about the future of our world. Henley's belief that the young Australian tourist convicted in Indonesia on drug-smuggling charges is innocent makes this an essential purchase for both your ears AND your conscience.

Excellent CD.......2007-06-16
Perfect Strangers is the perfect CD. There is not a single track that I skip over on this CD and that is rare for me. The entire CD is classic. The sound is superb, the musicianship is tight and the CD simply rocks. If you like classic rock, get your hands on this CD. It will be worth it to you and you will have a hard time taking it out of the CD player.

A Respectable Comeback.......2007-05-27
I remember waiting for this album like waiting for Xmas; And while only a handful of tracks could be considered 'classic Deep Purple', every song is solid, and all the players are in fine form. Blackmore is his usual unusual self, complete with angular, odd-scales, blues flurries, and his trademark, stinging vibrato; Ian sounds right at home, and the band just seems to follow close behind. This has been recently remastered(I don't know about the paticular version I'm reviewing, but I know it's out there...), so it sounds even better. And for being close to 25 years old, it still sounds great to me. A good CD to introduce younger listeners to these guys...it's old, but not that old.
Love My Perfect Stanger .......2007-01-13
I love this cd so much. I recommend that anyone who likes Deep Purple pick up a copy.
My Favorite Purple Disc.......2007-01-11
This album brings back a lot of memories for me. A friend of mine and I took a driving trip from Michigan to New Orleans shortly after this album came out, and it was constantly on our playlist during the drive. By 1984 many people had pretty much written Deep Purple off. They had not released an album as a band since 1975. Blackmore formed Rainbow, Gillian had his own band as well as a stint with Black Sabbath, and Glover and Paice had joined Whitsnake. Deep Purple had effectively dropped off the radar. "Perfect Strangers" would see the return of the mark II lineup of Glover, Blackmore, Gillian, Lord, and Paice and would prove to be one hell of a comeback. Personally this is my all time favorite Deep Purple album. Every song is great, the music is a perfect mix of the classic purple sound with an updated (for its time) contemporary feel. Two big AOR hits came from the album, the opener "Knocking At Your Back Door" and the title track "Perfect Strangers" Both songs rank with the best the band has ever done in fact the song "Perfect Strangers" is one of the best songs of the 80's in my book. The rest of the album is all great too. "Wasted Sunsets" is a ballad that Ian Gillian just kills. His voice is perfect for the song as he does what he does best belting it out. "Hungry Daze" is a rocking look back at the band's history and a look forward to their future. "Under The Gun", "Nobody's Home", "Mean Streak" "Gypsy's Kiss" and "Not Responsible" are all excellent as well. I got to see the band on this tour and the show was as good as the album. Sadly Deep Purple would follow "Perfect Strangers" with the lousy "House Of Blue Doors" which was a huge letdown after this one, and would be the last album from the mark II version of the band.
A Milestone!.......2006-12-11
Should you ever meet someone who's ranting about "the eighties" and the supposedly "bad" music of that decade... just put on this GREAT record!
The songs are well crafted, perfectly recorded and the whole album is absolutely NOT "trendy". With that I mean that you could never tell it was made in 1984. Clearly you can spot it's not from the seventies... but listening back to it, NOW, I notice how it hasn't aged a bit!
...and it features the most classic lineup of the band!
You just couldn't ask for more!! ;-)
