Simply Dope!!.......2004-05-18
Wonderful compilation from the forward thinking BBE Label with Masters At Work as the music selectors. After hearing this you realize where the duo take inspiration and even sample their music from. They are true music lovers. It's not a mixed CD but the fact that all the song are from different genres and time periods it sort of is. Each half of the duo respectively picked their own inspirational tracks. Track from the likes of Tito Puente, Rude Movements, the classic Candido(which to this day can stand up to any modern production)to Nina Simone's Sea-Line Woman(Which the duo would later remix for Verve's Remix project) are juxtopsed to modern nuggets from Pepe Bradock, Blaze, and even a then un-known Jill Scott. If you love music and love a groove regardless of genre this 2 disk set is for you. From Jazz, Salsa, House, Funk, and Hip-Hop with love.
Latin fusion, old skool marvels and deep deep grooves...........2000-06-13
Buy this CD if you love good music. Buy this CD if, like me, you're interested in the inspirations that make two of the world's best DJ's produce classic tune after classic tune.
Disc one begins with a wonderful samba rhythm and gorgeous vocal from Karen Ramirez that sets the scene (but not the pace) for things to come. The Latin flavour weaves its way through many of the tracks (on both discs) but never far away you can instantly see in all the trakcs what makes MAW tick.
Tracks 4 and 5 of disc 1 drop the groove with deep, expansive house numbers that just get better and better. Track 5 for me, is the cream of disc 1 - Blaze take an innocuous old school acid house groove and transforms it into a thing of subtle, funky beauty that DEMANDS to be played again and again - the louder the better. Having the mighty Taana Gardner is a sure fire hit - her sultry voice coupled with funky 70s disco, sounds as fresh as ever and stands as a tribute to the Mighty Larry Levan.
Disc 2 (Kenny's Contribution) is more overtly latin in feel, but none the interesting for this, with some excellent tunes. Its good to see that the likes of Nina Simone and Jill Scott featuring on a `dance' album.
Put together, this double CD makes compulsive listening and I recommend it to anyone who loves good music, chosen by excellent DJs compiled lovingly as only they know how.
Enjoy.
