Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Fade to Grey: The Best of Visage.......2005-08-05

Fade to Grey: The Best of Visage is a great compilation from the genius of Stave Strange and Visage. All their major hits are included on this collection. Tracks such as the informative yet amazing track tar, the dance friendly fade to grey, the brilliant track mind of a toy and many others. Steve Strange was such a brilliant and odd fellow that people sometimes get distracted by his strange attire and forget the amazing music that he wrote for this ground breaking band.

4 out of 5 stars Sure it's silly.......2005-06-02

Sure, the clothes, the makeup, and the posing were silly. And being tagged "New Romantics" by the tag-loving British press didn't give bands like Visage any credibility, despite the fact that they produced some mighty fine dance singles. I loathe the way the British music press loves to chew up and spit out artists at such a fast pace - what's hip today is passe tommorow. Pretty pathetic, really. The ONLY thing holding this great collection of singles back from a 5 star rating is the exclusion of the far superior 12" mix of the single Fade to Grey in favour of the 7" mix and a dreadful, unecessary new remix version of the same song. Had this cd been pressed as the original album was ( or even the great dance remix version of the album that was very briefly available on cassette, many years ago ) it would be perfect. As it is, it is only slightly flawed. As for the music itself, it is all heavily synthetic, very European sounding, influenced by the likes of Bowie and Kraftwerk. The presence of several members of Ultravox, as well as the underrated ( and sadly missed ) guitarist John McGeoch ( who later recorded with Siouxsie and the Banshees as well as Public Image Ltd ) gives the band a great musical base. And Steve Strange is a much better singer than you think he would be. The lyrics are ( mostly ) about nightclubbing, dancing, and dressing up, but they are really inconsequential, as the music really carries the album. A great slice of eighties dance music.

4 out of 5 stars 'We move in mysterious ways'.......2004-01-08

Visage was a great synth-heavy band of the early '80's. Sound familiar? Yes the air was thick back then with the sounds of Bowie-worshiping club fiends. One of the things that sets Visage apart from the pack is guitarist Midge Ure. Ure is a severely underrated musician and producer. The bulk of this collection features Ure's playing and songwriting before he quit the band. The post-Midge tracks hold up as well. Of course with a frontman like Steven Strange the rest of the band is bound to get overlooked. Although a highly visual band, Visage was not lacking in the musical department, penning some incredibly catchy tunes such as 'Anvil' and their big hit 'Fade to Grey'. The purpose of this collection as with all best of's is to thin out the back catalogue of more obscure bands. Still this is a great bunch of songs.

4 out of 5 stars A non-appreciated artist who deserves some credit........2002-05-26

I first heard this band when I lived Down Under, who at the time had two songs in the top 20 "Fade to Grey" and "Mind of A Toy". The fantasy style music energized a sour musical era which did not catch up in the US till about late 1982. BY then these artists Midge Ure and Billy Curie (Ultravox) had split from this band and made something for themselves.

This band had been the early 80's version of "House music" with the intention of not becoming widely known, but in hopes of setting a new trend in the music scene (aka "New Wave")with an imagery of fantasy romantic style music that is danceable. And it sold records. It paved the way for bands like Duran Duran, Human League, Heaven 17, even Joy Division who at once all claimed to have been influenced by this band. The only problem is the US of course was a little behind in the trend,so Visage's work was never was recognized by New Wave music fans in the US.

I particular enjoy "Mind of a Toy" ,"The Anvil", and "The Damned Don't Cry". The imagery of the music distracts the listener from the lyrics. However, it is pretty cool to listen to. The music videos if you can find them were very well choregraphed to the songs.

3 out of 5 stars Good collection of synth-pop tunes........2000-10-04

Visage is a pretty cool band. Their musicianship and songwriting skills are good. This hits package is listenable and satisfying. There's a total of twelve tracks, and all of them are in a synth-pop musical direction. The singer does a nice job with the vocal duties, and the keyboards sound tight. All of the tracks are pretty good. My favorite songs are both versions of "Fade to Grey" and "Love Glove." The CD booklet also contains a biography of the band. Worth a listen.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Essential for the chansom junkie. Buy It........2006-10-25

'Poulenc Melodies' performed by a really impressive lineup of vocal talent including Elly Ameling and Nicolai Gedda is exactly the kind of recording you need if you are compulsive about having 'complete' collections of things. This shows a range of composition which smaller releases such as single CD 'Voyage a Paris' (Hyperion, with Felicity Lott and Graham Johnson)can give us. For starters, many of these chansom showed a lot more evidence of more modern stylings and a far greater range of interpretation. In fact, I even had to check the lyrics in the included booklet to verify that on some songs, the performers were singing in French. Even though I have a smattering of knowledge of French, I would have sworn that the singers were performing songs in Russian.

I am happy that all four discs run for more than 60 minutes. No cheap short changing here. If you don't want to spring for the large set, the Hyperion release is great, but this is worth every penny.

4 out of 5 stars Almost completely wonderful.......2005-04-29

Its very considerable advantage lies in its completeness. Poulenc was one of the very greatest songwriters of any era. If you have no Poulenc songs in your collection, start here. The recommendation of Kruysen is a fine one, but only after you have heard this as a basis of comparison. Of Ameling, Senechal, Souzay, Gedda, and Parker, the only disappointment is Parker, who - I'll just say it - sings with his usual bleat. Souzay is a shade past it in vocal quality, but he still understands these songs as well as anybody, with great declamation (and that, after all, is what most of French singing is about). The dryness of the voice is nowhere close to disastrous, as it might have been in Italian opera. Indeed, it lends an air of life lived, without excuses. Gedda is okay. The standouts are Souzay, Ameling, and Senechal. Baldwin accompanies superbly.

5 out of 5 stars Indisputable Gallic flair.......2004-06-06

These performances are piquant and stylistically right on target. Even if Souzay is past his best here, he brings a lifetime of experience to bear and the other performers are wonderful. Ignore the curmudgeon who blasted this set. You will enjoy this tremendously if you love Poulenc.

4 out of 5 stars Idiomatic, fresh, cleanly recorded.......2001-05-12

This is a fine set. Dalton Baldwin accompanies each singer with clarity and zest. And who can resist the affectionate singing of the likes of Nicolai Gedda and Elly Ameling? The "melodies" themselves are magnificent--among Poulenc's finest creations. Whether you have other performances of these works or not, I think you'd be pleased with this beautifully recorded set. Certainly the 70's-vintage performances are more individual in profile, more "romantic," if you will, than those conjured by most of the "anonymous" singers of our own age. Recommended with enthusiasm.

2 out of 5 stars the best songs ever ruined by uneven performing.......2001-05-05

This is a warning for all Poulenc fans NOT to take the bargain route and purchase this immense collection -- you might think you're getting a great deal but: the singing and pianism is substandard and doesn't do the music justice (remotely). Songs like Bonne Journe'e or Ho^tel are all but ruined... Here's what to buy: Bernard Kruysen's CD of selected Poulenc masterpieces (favoring the Elouard settings)... nobody will ever come close to Kruysen in interpreting Poulenc. Avoid THIS CD. They still get 2 stars for (1) being encyclical and (2) delivering clear and even sound quality.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Certainly different.......2006-03-18

I have listened to this album many times and it always strikes me as being unique. Certainly it is very pretensious, but so was all of the posing and imagery of the time. The tracks are an eclectic mix of synth music with Strange's vocals over the top, and instrumentals such as "The Dancer" with a beat that could almost pass for some of the glam rock tunes of the decade before. It is not music you can dance to; but as I recall from visits to Strange's clubs of the time (Club Blitz, Club for Heroes etc) that wasn't the point. You listened and posed and checked-out everyone else. The album really evokes the era well.

5 out of 5 stars Visage ~ Visage.......2005-07-26

Visage is a one tremedous album from the mind of Steve Strange. This is without a doubt the best New Wave album of all time. Strange has some tremedous vocals and the lyrics are incredible. Tracks such as blocks on blocks, fade to grey, tar and mind of a toy set the bar high and the rest of the tracks are truly amazing in their own right. The cover art for this album is astounding and the dancing couple with the band in the background is one of my favorite covers of all time. This is an album not to be missed.

5 out of 5 stars "FADE TO GRAY", THE BEST POPSONG EVER.......2005-06-26

"Fade to gray" has everything. This kind of music will only be produced once.

4 out of 5 stars excellent, but the pressing presented here is outdate.......1999-08-21

Visage's self-titled album is a real masterpiece. Te instrumentation is great, Steve Strange's vocals is good, in short, this album is a perfect example of the New Romantic music of the 80's. However, this particular UK Polydor pressing is outdated since One Way Records rereleased the album in remastered form with the dance mix of "Fade to Grey" as bonus track. So, go to the previous page and select the "Visage + bonus tracks" title, it is also chaper than this one

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A truly excellent recording of wonderful music.......2006-09-17

From beginning to end, this CD is brilliantly performed. I would recommend this highly to anyone, not just those interested in early music.

5 out of 5 stars Superb.......2000-09-15

If you have even a passing interest in early music, get this disc! As with the other Ensemble Unicorn discs I have heard, the musicianship and performances are first-rate. The recording quality is also excellent.

This is mostly vocal music with a few instrumentals. So if that is not your cup of tea then you might want to try something else.

The fact that Naxos continues to put out music of such high quality at a budget prices is a thumb to the nose at the mainstream recording industry.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars The Damned Don't Cry.......2005-07-30

The Damned Don't Cry is a very good best of collection from Visage and Steve Strange. All the hits are included for instance, fade to grey, mind of a toy, love glove, in the year 2525, and many others. Steve Strange was and is a very ecentric fellow and he was as much know for his clothes as hit music. This is amazing music and the best of New Wave.

5 out of 5 stars Classic, because it's still the best music around.......2005-05-21

I just bought this cd recently, after enjoying the Blitz-time at Inflation in Melbourne. I missed this music in my collection, even after 20+ years. Isn't that incredible ? The music is catchy, dancable, at times brilliant, nostalgic, stylish and of sheer beauty. It's thatrical, aswell as glossy and it's like parading at The Ramblas at Barcelona or anywhere else. It's still fashionable, although you won't find a hairdresser or fashionist in my near surroundings.

I sincerely do hope, this music will have a rebound, as music has become to flat these days. Overproduced without any real spheric presence. Visage has all that. Look al the musicians...Magazine, Ultravox, Rusty Egan and Steve Strange. I've read that Strange is going to rule again in ol'new ways, and I wish him all the best. Hopefully he will be able to strike me again ...for another 25 years. But this music ? Will always be part of me. Not only for pasts'sake, although I can't deny it was a great time. And you can hear just that, for sure.

4 out of 5 stars New Romantic Nostalgia..........2001-08-23

Wonderul album, contains the brilliant 'fade to grey'. I always admire Steve Strange's outfits, he's different and this reflects onto the music too. This is a must if you love 80s/new romance. 'Damned don't cry' and 'pleasure boys' are also cool songs. Although Mr. Strange has been in bad press lately, his work here cannot be ignored.

This is a delightful record. Francis Poulenc was a composer who commanded many different styles, and these 31 songs are so well chosen for variety of length, weight, mood, and character that no two of them are alike, although some are connected through their poets or subject matter. In Four Children's Songs, poems that begin innocently become scary; they are set to music of utmost simplicity. There are outpourings of ardent passion, tenderness, joy, sorrow, longing, and nostalgia, as well as sarcastic parodies, jazzy cabaret songs, and one setting of Shakespeare in English. The performances are wonderful. White's bright, light tenor is just right for this music; he brings out every nuance and inflection with complete idiomatic identification, and his diction is perfect. Sanders, his long-time partner, provides both support and leadership, setting moods in his preludes and sustaining them in his postludes--the mark of a great accompanist. --Edith Eisler

      Customer Reviews:

      2 out of 5 stars At least it's Poulenc.......2003-05-14

Being a tenor, I know I am harsh on other voices - especially those that are stringy, strident, strained, sickly - pick an "s".
Poor Robert White should be singing lower rep at this point, his voice is really not suited to the range of some of these songs... and we all know they weren't even written for tenors... oh well - the pianist is good, Mr. White's performance isn't terrible, it's just not nice.

        Album Description

The 1953 recording features the spectacular twenty-six year old Leontyne Price, accompanied by Samuel Barber at the Library of Congress. The duo's entire recital is issued whole for the first time. In this recital the soprano and composer give the world premiere performance of Barber's "Hermit Songs", and perform Henri Sauguet's "La Voyante" (The Fortune Teller) and other songs by Barber, Poulenc and Fauré.

This remarkable 1938 recording, released to the public for the first time, gives us the 28 year old baritone, Samuel Barber in 12 songs, accompanying himself at the piano. These little known performances reveal Barber as a singer/player of uncommonly deep communicative power. The performances (issued in cooperation with Mr. Barber's estate and the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia) include folk songs from England, America, the Tyrol and Tuscany as well as lieder by Schumann, Brahms, Mendelssohn, C.P.E Bach and Schubert.
