Album Description

Featuring original music composed by Alberto Iglesias. Adapted from the best-seller John le Carre's romantic thriller, two-time Academy Award nominee Ralph Fiennes and Rachel Weisz head the cast of "The Constant Gardener." In a remote area of northern Kenya, the dedicated activist Tessa Quayle (Weisz) is found brutally murdered. Her travelling companion, a local doctor, appears to have fled the scene and the evidence points to a crime of passion. Sandy Woodrow (Danny Huston), Sir Bernard Pellegrin (Bill Nighy), and other member of the British High Commission assume that Tessa's widower, their mild-mannered colleague Justin Quayle (Fiennes) will leave the matter to their discretion. They could not be more wrong... Featuring music performed by acclaimed Kenyan percussionist and Real World recording artist Ayub Ogada, Alberto Iglesias' ("La Mala Educacion," "The Dancer Upstairs," "Todo Sobre Mi Madre") lush score evokes the film's compelling African and European landscapes.

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful Score.......2007-04-24

For someone like me who purchases soundtracks for the score to use for dance & skating programs, this soundtrack definitely made it into my collection. My only minus to the soundtrack is that there isn't much variety among the many tracks. But I am still able to work around it.

3 out of 5 stars Only track 13.......2007-03-31

In my opinion, only track 13 is worthy of buy this CD. Track 13 is beautiful, other than that extremely depressing music...... Once again track 13 is the most beautiful adn touching music that I have ever heard!

5 out of 5 stars Great Service.......2007-02-12

My CD was delivered in a very timely manner and the product was in great shape upon arrival.

4 out of 5 stars A nice reminder of a very moving movie.......2007-01-12

Favorite songs are the ones by Ayub Ogada. I think it's wonderful that we found his music through this film.

3 out of 5 stars it captures the spirit of the movie.......2006-11-10

I like this soundtrack because it reminds me of the movie, which I loved. I am not sure I would appreciate it much if I hadn't seen the movie and didn't have pictures in my mind for each theme. It is redolent of Africa though and that in itself is satisfying.

Steven Spielberg veered from the futuristic sci-fi flirtations of A.I. and Minority Report with this brisk, stylish period take on the career of teen con-man extraordinaire Frank Abagnale (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his dogged G-man pursuer/de facto extended family member Carl Hanratty (Tom Hanks). As always, the director's musical collaborator is John Williams, and the scoring legend uses the occasion of their 20th collaboration as a rewarding musical journey back to the days when he was known as Johnny Williams, ambitious young pianist for Henry Mancini on such early jazz scores as Peter Gunn. Informed by a half-century of subsequent achievement, Williams's return to the jazz idiom of his youth yields a smart, nervous score that evokes more than mere nostalgia. But with Dan Higgins's moody sax often leading the way, the veteran composer's work here seems more evocative reinvention than revisitation, yet another tribute to his uncanny ability to make any idiom his own. A handful of pop standards (including Sinatra's "Come Fly with Me," Getz and Gilberto's "Girl from Ipanema," "The Christmas Song" by Nat "King" Cole) deftly color both period and plot, but, as always, it's Williams who provides Spielberg's masterful imagery with its musical life's blood. --Jerry McCulley

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding!.......2007-04-04

John Williams does it again! This man is the best composer I have ever heard! The music fits the scenes in the movies so unblievably well that you will wonder how one man was creative enough to think of it!

4 out of 5 stars Johnny's "Lost in Soundtrack".......2006-08-25

The opening theme is the coolest ever. It has that jazzy, suspenseful, space-age groove that takes you back to the early 60's era portrayed in the movie.

Once I discovered it was done by John Williams, things started to click. The arrangement and themes actually go back way before he was famous. Back to an era he may not want you to remember. Back when he was known simply as "Johnny" Williams.

First, notice the melody and pace of the creeping marimbas and bubbling flutes. Next, catch a repeat of the old Sci-Fi, TV Fairy-Tale known as "LOST IN SPACE." Listen for the incidental, suspense-scene music throughout. Did you catch the composer's name in the credits?

Bingo!(and still very cool)!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Mix of Jazz and Emotion.......2006-02-20

This is brilliant. You will have this theme ringing in your ears for a month after listening. I have collected around 25 to 30 J. Williams scores. This is wonderful like the rest...

5 out of 5 stars John Williams, Film Scores and Jazz all done to Perfection........2004-10-15

I loved the movie and now the music. I think it is one of the most original soundtracks that John Williams has ever done. The Jazz in this music is so peaceful and lighthearted. This soundtrack should be on any music lovers shelf. In my book, this music is a classic film score.

5 out of 5 stars A Great "Catch".......2004-10-04

Steven Spielberg's 2002 film CATCH ME IF YOU CAN was a breezy crime caper movie based on the true-life story of Frank Abagnale, a real "phony" who nevertheless embarked on a three-year spree of writing bum checks adding up to millions during the 1960s. To capture that era's swinging mores, he had his great friend John Williams design one of that composer's quirkiest scores ever--very jazzy and redolent of the scores Henry Mancini devised for the "Pink Panther" films and Stanley Donen's 1963 classic CHARADE.

But for Williams, CATCH ME IF YOU CAN was very much a homecoming, as he started out in jazz and even worked quite closely with Mancini early on in Hollywood. The genuine jauntiness and mystery of the film's main musical motifs are balanced by moments of warm but not mushy sentimentality, and hit songs of that period by Frank Sinatra, Stan Getz, and Dusty Springfield round out this appealing collection.

CATCH ME IF YOU CAN was such an offbeat project for a composer and a director known for boldness, but it served as a challenge that Spielberg aced on the screen and Williams aced in his music. It is highly recommended for its sheer audacity in going back to the past and still remaining relevant to today.

4 out of 5 stars Nice memories.......2006-10-27

This is a fine album that ocassionally reminds us of the magic between Bob and Tobin that has sorely been missed in GbV for some time.

Highlights: "Burns Carpenter," "Total Exposure" (one of Bob and Tobin's best songs, period), "Stifled Man Casino" and "Feathering Clueless."

4 out of 5 stars bob and tobin.......2006-07-23

how can it go wrong? the greatness achieved during their first collaboration (all the classic era GbV and the incredible twisted tonic and chasers) is strangely missing. in its stead one gets an entirely enjoyable and bland album. this is a three star record. however, the very presence of stifled man casino earns it an extra one!

2 out of 5 stars Pollard needs to show some restraint.......2003-04-26

I am sorry. I am a big GBV fan, and a big Pollard fan, but he is losing his mind. No one on earth, ever, could expect to write half the number of songs he's publishing these days and have the majority of them be interesting tunes. This album is so non-memorable it's almost unbelievable that it comes from the (former?) master of the indie pop hook, Bob Pollard, and Tobin Sprout, a catcy tunesmith himself. I have listened to it five or six times since (gasp) purchasing it for full retail price, and I find it less interesting and more irritating very time. There are plenty of great GBV albums out there, as well as good Pollard side project albums. I am not, I might add, being an "old-GBV" purist, it's just simply that this album pretty much blows.

Do see GBV live if you get the chance, though. They rock. Bring earplugs.

4 out of 5 stars Bob & Toby are my guys..........2001-10-20

And they don't let me down on this effort. Sprout lays down the instrumental tracks and Pollard contributes vocals and lyrics, with the exception of one exclusively Sprout track. The whole album jangles and buzzes and drones beautifully with Sprout's guitars, synths, and drums. Pollard's peerless melodic sense shines throughout and his trademark lyrical weirdness is as compelling and enigmatic as ever. This album has been in, on, or around my stereo for weeks. "Stifled Man Casino" is a crunchy guitar-pop gem guaranteed to make you get out your air guitar and nail those power chords, and "Tomorrow You May Rise" is a haunting anthem to human perseverance: "Stand up crying, don't bend/You are not lost in the present/Tomorrow you may rise..." The album's sound is remarkably crisp and clear for a relatively low-budget production and the cover art is monochromatically dark and cool (a photo of two guys at some kind of switchboard...Sprout and Pollard at the Fountain of Sparks?), much like the music itself. Buy it.

4 out of 5 stars A fine return to form...........2001-09-07

Damn near Tonics II I must admit.Tonics and Twisted Chasers that is,a masterful collection of Bob n' Toby basement pop gems that are sure to please the old school line-up G.B.V fan. That particular recording is an absolute must. But here on Airport alot of great hook laden magic chords from the fingertips of Tobin Sprout once again.Just got it today and yeah it's growin' on me.Killer stuffs.Heard Airport II will be released soon as well. It's no easy task keeping up with the unhinged cranium pop master that is the ageless Robert Pollard, whose musical ideas and love of all that was great about the 60's mercybeat and British invasion stuff down thru the best of Bowie's Ziggy era perhaps and the quirky mid/late 70's punk yrs i.e. Wire,Pere Ubu,devo then sifting thru all that was great following in the post punk yrs. of early R.E.M/Replacements/Husker Du/green on red/Dream Syndicate...well you get the idea.Pollard and his revolving door men of many yrs.still keeping the torch lit and not giving in.At 36 I don't feel so old after all!!!

Album Description

Out of print in the U.S.! When the British Pub Rock band Ducks Deluxe split, bassist/vocalist Nick Garvey and pianist Andy McMaster formed The Motors along with drummer Ricky Slaughter and guitarist/vocalist Bram Tchaikovsky. Their 1977 debut was a nod towards their Pub roots, but by their 1978 sophomore album, Approved By The Motors, they had flourished into a brilliant Pop outfit. A year later, Tchaikovsky went solo, Slaughter split and Garvey and McMaster continued with The Motors, making a keyboard-heavy album in 1980 that should have made them superstars. Unfortunately, things didn't work out that way, but we have this 17 track collection to remind us of their brilliance. All the great tracks are here ('Airport', 'Love And Loneliness', 'Forget About You', etc.) plus a few fantastic B-sides, album tracks and more. EMI. 2004.

5 out of 5 stars FINALLY!!!!!.......2007-03-09

it took a while to find a cd version of this band, but it was worth the wait. buy it and enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Brit Pop at it's best........2004-03-10

The Motors are far and away the best pop artists from that or any other period. The hummable driving beat is irresistable. They have that certain undefineable I haven't heard since. "Airport" and "Forget about You", well you simply must play them twice, they're nice.

4 out of 5 stars Update from England.......2004-01-05

Ah the maestro McMaster is certainly residing in a sleepy outpost in South East England but the local pub incident is one of mistaken identity, for it was one of the trolls who upset the Landlady. An understandable mistake given McMaster's uncanny resemblance to said troll. However much work at the keyboard and in the studio has resulted in stunning new tracks, one of which, "No Sense in Love" will surely score another hit for this talented pop scribe!!

5 out of 5 stars News From A Quiet Corner Of England.......2003-12-29

For the fan of this band who wondered if Andy McMaster had fallen off the face of the earth, be comforted! He lives in a sleepy village in the southeast of England that is largely populated by ogres, giants and trolls. Rumour has it that he still makes music, perhaps more so now that he has been banned from the village's only pub after an altercation with the landlady.

3 out of 5 stars 'Coulda been a contendah'.......2002-03-21

These guys released two albums.
Couldn't they - or their label - have dropped some of their
'hits' so there would be room for the complete version of their
true masterwork?
I am referring to DANCIN' THE NIGHT AWAY.
If that was on this CD, a copy would most likely be winging its way to me. Instead, I keep searching............

Having pulled often-stellar duty in both genres for many a year, film-scoring vet Alan Silvestri should know if the show-biz adage that drama is easy, it's comedy that's hard is true. For the Brad Pitt/Julia Roberts comic-romantic adventure The Mexican (the title refers to an antique pistol that must be smuggled back across the border), Silvestri taps a little of his recent history--and some sage genre insight--to conjure up a breezy, playful score that evokes everything from Leone's Dollars trilogy and traditional Mexican folk music to pastoral jazz flourishes and club kitsch. But a decidedly Morricone-meets-Bacharach sensibility prevails throughout, with the composer often lovingly tweaking the familiar banjo, harmonica, and choral clichés of the spaghetti Western into music that is refreshing even as it is strangely familiar. A handful of pop songs adds another layer of loopiness to the proceedings--especially the remix of Men Without Hats' chestnut from the early 1980s, "The Safety Dance," and the sprightly "El Cable" by Mexican exotica master Esquivel. --Jerry McCulley

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Ennio Morricone or Alain Silvestri.......2004-06-11

Alain Silvestri did a great job. He choose the songs' melodies sounds like the Spagetti Western Movies' great composer Ennio Morricone's unforgettable Spagetti Western movie themes. The Main Title and The Mexican songs are the great example ones. Also "Where is my staff" too. "Thieves" is another one of the greatest. And list goes on.. I love Ennio's songs that's why i love this soundtrack. If you love Ennio's stuffs too this soundtrack give you all you need.
Many of the soundtracks don't have every songs. So you have to find the other songs anywhere. For God's shake The Mexican is not an example oof this. This is not just a Soundtrack. IT'S a SCORE and a SOUNDTRACK. You can find the MOVIE SONGS and THE OTHER lyrical songs in this soundtrack. This is it's other plus too.

3 out of 5 stars A complement to the movie which does not stand alone so well.......2002-05-27

I thought the sound track to the movie was a great complement to it but after I bought it I felt that it did not stand up by itself very well. Its themes seemed too short and disjointed. But, I plan to play it on my CD player in random mode along with other CD's. Then I think it can complement the music it is interspersed with - depending on the music.

4 out of 5 stars soundtrack , the mexcian.......2001-04-22

the starting theme song, is the my all time favourite, watch the movie, and u'll know y.

4 out of 5 stars Great Soundtrack for a good movie.......2001-03-06

The Soundtrack for "The Mexican" is not necessarily one of the greatest soundtracks ever made, but it does capture the essence of the movie. The distinguishable guitar plucks and the internitten catchy songs are great. Overall...if you liked the movie, you should like the soundtrack.

5 out of 5 stars Hot Fun.......2001-03-06

Hot Fun is the best way to describe the soundtrack to The Mexican. It's fast paced, boisterous, and makes for great listening on any type of trip. Be prepared for drives to the grocery store to become a lot more exciting! The mix of vocal and instrumental selections add to the versatility of the disk and give it a unique flavor. Even if you haven't seen the movie, this CD would be a great addition to any CD collection!

Volume 2 (comprised of 2 CDs) is another first rate compilation of the series' original music and not to be missed by U.N.C.L.E. fans. The liner notes are wonderful and add a lot to ones appreciation of the music.

My only problem is that THE CDs ARE COPY PROTECTED! Considerable work is needed to get the music onto your iPod, if you really want the music in your mp3 collection. This is a major hassle and a surprise, since the first set in the series was not copy protected.

Many of us have always thought The Man From UNCLE had the best music for a TV series ever, and this three double CD release confirms this. Wow! I'd be just happy with one CD, but having SIX (three double CDs packages) is absolutely out of this world, I mean, a lifetime wait come true.

Indeed, this is an unbelievable collection of three double CDs packages with the complete series soundtrack, and I mean the complete music, not a tune is missing.

And this is the ORIGINAL Man From Uncle music. Let me stress the point: this is the four years ORIGINAL soundtrack with the original recordings as they were heard throughout the series, not a no-name orchestra doing personal versions of the stuff. The audio transfer is very, very good, the music from late episodes is even in stereo.

Each individual CD carries over 70 minutes of music. All in all there you have the four TV seasons main titles and all, absolutely all of TMFU unforgetable music.

This is not a chronological release, meaning, all CDs have a mix of music from all four TV seasons. Volume 1 is heavier on early TV seasons stuff, fans of Jerry Goldsmith will love it. Those of us who prefer what Gerald Fried and later Richard Shores did with TMFU music, then volume 2 is mandatory. If you are a fan, you can't miss any of these six CDs. However if buying all three double packages is too much for you, you must go with Volume 2, no questions asked. Volume three is the weakest of them as it brings "suites" and a whole CD with "The Girl From Uncle" soundtrack, but you have a bonus "Open Channel D" beeper.

Each package is gorgeous, each with a glossy color booklet with extensive liner notes with details on how each tune was written to a specific TV series episode and how it was used onwards. You have bios on the composers, on how the recordings were made, even an overview on how many instruments were available in each of the years the music was recorded.

So, throw away your Hugo Montenegro Man From Uncle CD, this is the REAL thing.

1 out of 5 stars forced.......2006-10-27

This album should never have been released. Bob's vocals and lyrics often sound forced and the whole thing sounds uninspired. It's a drastic drop from the awesome first Airport 5 album. Tobin offers some decent melodies, but Bob doesn't do anything with them, except maybe on "Life Starts Here."

4 out of 5 stars almost great.......2006-07-23

on the first airport 5 release, there was a kind of lazy indifference to the whole thing. this one is a vast improvement. the album works as a cohesive unit and creates an atmosphere all its own. this is what great records do. this is not a great record, though. the finely tuned ear of mr. pollard is again somewhat off here, as with the first airport 5. a little more work and this would have been one for the ages. as it stands, it is meerly a very good album.

4 out of 5 stars An improved part 2 from a wonderful reunion..For Up We Are!.......2002-03-03

Where I was largely disappointed in the unevenness of the first Airport 5 release;Life Starts here is solid effort, filled to the brim with Pollard's vocal hooks and Tobin Sprouts beautifully understated instumentation.Tobin plays alot more piano on this release which gives the songs a greater warmth and depth.Bob weaves his vocal web in,out over, under and through a rich collection songs, which range from the experimental (Intro & Dawntrust Guarantee)to the infectious chorus in (Yellow wife #5 & However Young they are),the anthemic rise, fall and deconstruct in(How Brown) and the catchy(Impressions of a Leg, Forever Since & I Can't Freeze Anymore)Yeah, there's even a couple of toss a ways but who cares? This is a collection that is warm, playful and weirdly wonderful and leaves me longing for more!

3 out of 5 stars The Disappointing Pt. 2 of a Wonderful Reunion.......2002-02-28

This album will always hold a special spot in my cd collection, because it's the first Robert Pollard release I've purchased and been disappointed with. I got into the GBV game late, but was quickly hooked after seeing them live. I both sought out the older stuff and made sure to scoop up (and if not, at least hear) everything new. And I really loved everything I bought, old and new, from Propeller to Isolation Drills, and each became a permanent fixture in my listening collection. And while I had heard friends' copies of some of the more uneven side projects Bob puts out, "Life Starts Here" was the first I awaited with anticipation but found lacking.

My biggest complaint with this release is that the flaws of the collaboration are revealed. Where I listened to and treated each track on "Tower in the Fountain of Sparks" as a complete, unifed, whole song, many of the ones on "Life" sound like instrumentals with words over them. And where songs like "The Cost of Shipping Cattle" and "Up the Nails" culminated with Bob dramatically repeating a line, it seems like an old formula he resorts to on "We're in the Businesses" and "I Can't Freeze Anymore."

But, that said, some of the songs do warm up to you over time, and I enjoy the elements of play and experimentation found here. The "Intro" is a great opener, "Dawntrust Guarantee" is an interesting forray into weirdness, and "Out in the World" is a fun-filled boot-stomping closer. My main wish is that Tobe and Bob would have maybe swapped a few more tapes and accrued some more material, so that they could really put out a powerful and cohesive sophomore disc. But as it is, "Life Starts Here" seems split between more experimental sonic excursions and watered-down tracks in the style of "Tower."

5 out of 5 stars Weak film, great score.......2004-03-29

The Egyptian has gone down in history as one of the more problematic 'sand and sandal' epics of the 1950s. Marlon Brando took a pass and the producers recast wooden Edmund Purdom in the lead. The film is stolen by Peter Ustinov (as the servant), with enjoyable support from Jean Simmons, the hammy Victor Mature, and Gene Tierney (on the edge of her nervous breakdown). But the restored music score on this CD shows the very best of the two collaborators: Alfred Newman and Bernard Herrmann. The mixture of their styles (Herrmann was brought on board to fill out the score) creates an intriguing musical narrative. Film buffs and classical music lovers should rejoice at this lushly-played and carefully re-constructed CD. Well supported with notes about the original score and their editing. I've had the disk since it came out and play it regularly. If you like either of the composers, you'll thoroughly enjoy.

4 out of 5 stars Very good, but..........2003-02-23

Easily one of the best Golden Age scores. This remarkable CD is quite good, the Moscow performance is rather good although arguably performed without that extra bit of energy that made the original so memorable. This CD includes lots of info on the film and score, which is fun to read, and features a lot of the score.
However, if you really like this CD, I recommend checking out the FSM release of the original score. There are still many copies available, but it is a little more expensive. But for the completists out there (like me), that release is necessary.

    5 out of 5 stars A Classic Film Score.......2002-10-09

For me, this is an especially welcomed soundtrack. Having grown up with film version of "The Egyptian" to finally be able to have the music from the film was a happy event. The film stands apart from other so-called Swords and Sand epics from a real attempt to convey the characters of the story with more depth. The soundtrack itself had to be reconstructed from the conductor's score in some cases but was a labor of love, as the results attest. The music to "The Egyptian" marked the happy collaboration by Alfred Newman and Bernard Herrmann, both very respected composers of film music. Together they manage to evoke a world long past.

The recording by the Moscow Symphony conducted by William T Stromberg brings forth all of the passion and drama from the original score. Pains were taken to create the recording sound as per the indications of the composers. So in "Her Name Was Merit" the alto flute player sits 30 feet behind the oboe d'amore player. The results are stunning and a must have recording for anyone interested in the film or film music. The accompanying booklet has a great deal of information about the film as well as still photographs.

4 out of 5 stars Herrmann and Newman make a great team.......2001-12-23

The Egyptian is one of those scores that's more well known for reasons beyond the actual music it contains. In this case, it's the only time Alfred Newman and Bernard Herrmann worked on a score together. This 1999 re-recording features about 70% of the score, reconstructed and preformed by the always-excellent team of Morgan and Stromberg

That it's more known for its history isn't to say that the music isn't good, because it is. The themes are all classic Newman lyrisism, and there are many wonderful Herrmann moments of...well....Herrmann-ness. Right from the start with the prelude, we get a great grand sweeping epic theme with full choir. Cues such as 'The Chariot Ride', 'The Pursuit' and 'Violence' are great bombastic trips,. And of special mention are the two longest cues -- 'Nefer Nefer Nefer' and 'Valley of Kings'. While the prior written by Herrmann and the latter by Newman, both are simply marvelous examples of grand romantisism the Golden Age is known for.

Beyond the above, there isn't much to say. If you like Herrmann, this is a great addition, and the Newman contribution is great too. It's not the best score in the world, but there are far far worse choices out there.

5 out of 5 stars An odd but enjoyable assortment of songs.......2007-02-05

This was one of my first experiences with Airport 5, the side project between Robert Pollard (GBV) and his long time friend Tobin Sprout (ex-GBV). Based on the strength of the song writing here I immediately purchased an Airport 5 full length album. The songs are instantly recognizeable as the work of Pollard, but the shape of the songs is clearly reflective of Sprout's influence.

The music employ swirling repetitive beats and hooks, reminiscient of a less produced Spaceman 3. The lyrics lean towards the minimalist side and often times take on a chant like quality that would later become a standard practice on the Airport 5 album "Life Starts Here".

The best GBV cut on this disc by far is the live version of "Dayton Ohio 19 something and 5", a great have for fans. The other 3 GBV songs (tracks 2,3, and 4) are very sparsely arranged acoustic numbers and are the weakest songs on the disc, but only by comparison to the other songs.

All in all its a great piece to own and a lot easier to buy than all of the singles.

5 out of 5 stars Professional winter music by Pollard and Sprout.......2003-09-10

Selective Service is a singles anthology of sorts, with GBV and Airport 5 singles that were only available on vynil before (I believe). These songs are truly amazing. They become one in this EP, creating a feeling of warmth, the kind you could only feel when you hug someone in the dead of winter. My favorites are "Dayton, OH 19 Something And 5," "Cold War Water Sports," and "The Wheel Hits The Path (Quite Soon)." The music is great, the lyrics obtusely cohesive, and in a way, touching and inspiring. A defenate must for any GBV fan. And I must say, any GBV fan needs to get an Airport 5 CD, you'll thank me. Probably not, but you'll be happy you listened to me.
