Incredible Soul Indeed!!.......2007-06-27
I have always enjoyed the pure rush I feel when listening to the great hits of Motown, and this CD set is one of the best.
I actually asked for this set as a Christmas gift & enjoyed it so much that I ordered the same CD's for a good friend of mine.
The collection of songs is outstanding and makes road trips or just an afternoon of kicking back an absolute blast.
Super Soul.......2007-03-09
This CD has a super anthology of songs that you loved from the 60's & 70's, all the great artists, Marvin Gaye, the Commodores, Otis Redding, the Supremes, Aretha. If you like the Motown Sound, this is a great collection.

Great Collection of 60's and 70's Soul .......2006-06-01
The Incredible Soul Collection is an awesome 2-CD collection of some of the best songs from the 60's and 70's. Aretha, Marvin, Ray, Otis, Sam & Dave, and Gladys Knight and the Pips are just a few of the great artists on this collection.
This set is great to put in on a long drive, or on a lazy weekend afternoon. It makes you nostalgic and wistful on one hand, and grateful on the other hand that this music still lives and breathes in the hearts and minds of those of us who first experienced it so long ago.

Many believe this 1967 landmark, Sam Maghett's first full-length studio recording, is the greatest blues album ever made. While that assertion is awfully difficult to substantiate, these 11 gems (plus one alternate) certainly deserve hyperbolic praise. These cuts have a dramatically direct emotional appeal, a blunt, unfiltered artlessness that's rarely been achieved in an electric setting. Sam's spirited vocals come from his heart and his belly, not his brain. His guitar work is smoothly melodic, à la B. B. King with a bit more bite, frenetic and energetic like Buddy Guy, but with more taste. Since this Mississippi native died at age 32, this album sits in a mystical place in blues history: In many ways, it is to Chicago blues what Robert Johnson's meager output is to Delta blues. --Marc Greilsamer
Customer Reviews:
A monster of a record........2007-06-05
Let's keep it simple: This is one hell of a blues album. Released in 1967, West Side Soul hearkens back to the glory days of the Chicago blues scene, when artists like Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf were changing the world on a regualar basis. Just like the greatest songs of those visionaries, the music found here is pure bone-chilling electric ferocity, a violent incantation that'll shoot straight to yer soul. Sam is every bit as Magic as he's made out to be. For one thing, he's an incredible lead guitarist- his playing is nimble and emotional, constantly darting over, under, and around the songs, shooting strings of melody with freewheeling abandon, offsetting grooving rhythms with fleet-fingered leaps into the stratosphere. The ferocity and emotional intensity of this playing is nothing short of sorcery. Sam's also an astounding vocalist- his cavernous, ringing bellow is bewitching in its intensity. He's capable of hitting sky-scraping highs stomach-churning lows with equal power, and with every bit as much bewitcihng emotional intensity as his guitar playing. Combine that with a rhythmically gifted backing band and you've got a one-of-a-kind musical force.
The songs show this formula taken to its ideal extreme: "That's All I Need" is a shambling stunner with an undeniably soulful lead vocal and a gritty guitar line. "Lookin' Good" is a dense, churning instrumental with an irrisistably greasy juke joint feel. The cover of Robert Johnson's "Sweet Home Chicago" is a guitar-slaying burst of energy, and the slow-burning "Every Night And Every Day" features some truly stinging leads from Sam. "I Need You So Bad" is a fiery, explosive vocal showcase, and "I Feel So Good (I Wanna Boogie)" is a grooving, hypnotic monster with some shimmying guitars and a chugging bass line. "All of Your Love" is a simmering concoction of shouted vocals and brutal guitars, and "I Don't Woman" is the epitome of angry, uncompromising blues.
So, here's the deal: West Side Soul is one of the best blues albums ever made, and a key addition to any blues collection. Get it now.
Sam's Best - One Top 10 Blues Albums Ever.......2006-10-22
This is one of Magic Sam's best albums and it could easily be one of the best blues albums of all time. This album should be in everyone's top 10 blues list. Like all great classic blues, this CD has aged very well and sound great today as it did 30 plus years ago. Sam vocal abilities are under-rated, his guitar playing is fantastic, and and his an excellent backing band. This is one of those albums that has grown on me the more I play it. There are two albums that I put on when we have company that always get people asking 'who is this?' It is this album and Lowell Fulson. They don't make music like this any more. It's a shame his career has cut so short. Buy this CD - you will not be disappointed.
They don't get much better than this...............2006-08-01
In the history of the blues, there are many great names whose lives were cut far too short (Robert Johnson dying from strychnine comes to mind), and Magic Sam is another great bluesman whose life ended far too soon, dying at the age of 32 from a heart attack. But simply because they lived a short time on this earth in no way means their music will fall by the wayside; if anything, they are legendary in part because of this.
"I Don't Want No Woman" is easily comparable to any of the great hits put out by the Beatles, The Rolling Stones....and the many other famous groups of the time. For some reason or other, the Blues get little to no recognition from the public at large, and this has always been a mystery to me since I discovered the Blues myself only a few short years ago. For fans of the Blues, I guess this is a good thing, since we have a treasure which few people know of......and Magic Sam's "West Side Soul" truly is a treasure.
His version of "Sweet Home Chicago" is probably the best version of the famous Robert Johnson song, only to be outdone by Johnson's original.
"Lookin' Good" is an amazing instrumental piece, and if you are like me, you will wear the replay button out on this song. And there are song's on this in which I wonder how his vocal chords hold up to the stress; namely "I Feel So Good (I Wanna Boogie)" among them. He would have been a truly entertaining figure to see perform live. "My love Will Never Die" is one of the more haunting pieces, one which shows his fantastic voice on display.
When I first heard this album, I was not overly impressed with it, as it did not seem to define the blues for me. However, the more I listened to it, the more it became an integral part of my Blues collection, one that I will indeed forever treasure. This album taught me that the Blues are not monolithic in any sense of the word; rather, they are composed of many different pieces and sub-genres. West Side Soul is probably the best example of Chicago Blues west side sound.
A must have for any lover of the Blues.
Long live Magic Sam!
All of Magic Sam's Magic on Display.......2006-05-05
On West Side Soul, Magic Sam, who died tragically in 1967 at the age of 32, teases and perplexes us with what was and what could have been.
Some of the finest blues guitar ever recorded is on this album. And Sam's singing, which had been accused of being uneven, was at its best. "Don't Want No Woman" is sung and played at a level of feeling reminiscient of Marvin Gaye's "I Heard It Through The Grapevine" and Percy Sledge's "When A Man Loves A Woman." "My Love Will Never Die" is rendered even more poignant with his early death. And his "Lookin Good" is one of the best blues shuffle toe-tappers you'll ever hear.
This is a classic album, and a must-have for every blues guitar lover.
Magic Indeed.......2006-05-04
There are only two ways that someone could not like this album: 1. he/she lacks the capacity to feel emotion ie has no soul.
2. he/she is deaf.
While there are too many great blues albums to hail one as being the greatest, I could not argue with anyone thinking this to be the peak of blues. Whether you are a blues fan or not, this album has such emotion and such power that it transcends musical taste. The musicianship, perhaps most notably the guitar playing, is fabulous and Sam' vocals are breathtaking; he has the voice of an angel on fire, meaning sweet and lovely but edgy and intense. Music just doesn't get much better than this. I highly recommend it to anyone that considers his/herself to be a fan of music, partiuclarly blues, jazz, rock, or soul.

Live Donny Hathaway.......2007-03-12
What can I say Donny's voice is a treasure! I started listening to the CD and his voice is so soothing and his lyrics are profound. My brother who is close to 60 came for a visit and had not listened to Donny in years. I gave him the CD and yes I ordered 2 more copies one for myself and for my next visitor. A must for any music officianado!
A Tribute To Donny Hathaway .......2007-02-22
I've read some of the reviews and I'm quite surprised that many people had never heard of Donny Hathaway until Elliott Yamin paid tribute to him on AI. I'm "Old School" and grew up listening to Donny Hathaway. Although I'm thrilled to hear young artist (Elliott, India Arie, Anthony Hamilton, Alicia Keyes, Robin Thicke and Justin Timberlake, to name a few) say Donny IS or is ONE OF their biggest musical influences, I am also saddened. Too many people know too little about artists such as Donny Hathaway and Minnie Riperton who passed away the same year as Donny. Both were brilliant singer/songwriter/musicians and if it takes a show like American Idol to bring Donny's music back to the forefront of the music industry, than so be it. I just hope talented singers such as Shanice, Chante Moore and Trina Broussard continue to cover Minnie Riperton songs.
This is a really good collection of Donny's work and deserves the recognition that it's receiving. I know Leon Russell wrote "A Song For You" and I've heard his version of it but Donny's version, oh my, what can I say, it's P.E.R.F.E.C.T.I.O.N. His duets with Roberta Flack are equally outstanding and although I absolutely LOVE "The Closer I Get To You" and "Where is the Love", "You Are My Heaven" is one of my ALL TIME favorite songs ever. I have such fun memories of "trying" to sing "You Are My Heaven". It's so upbeat and catchy and was quite a departure from their usual soft and silky ballads. "The Ghetto" is also a favorite of mine by Donny, mainly because it was part of "The Movement" that took place back in the 70's.
I really hope people continue to purchase this CD. We can't let great music and artists like Donny Hathaway ever be forgotten. His voice has always been in a league of it's own.
Everyone should check out "Movin' On", Elliott's new single, you can really hear how Donny Hathaway has influenced his singing on the song.
Thank you Elliott Yamin for letting America know who one of your Idols is!
smile.......2007-01-13
I have many CD'd, especially a lot of old school recordings. I love this album. This is one of my favorites - every song is pure listerning pleasure. I can think of only 3 others albums I have brought in the last 40 years, on which I enjoy "every song" I was a big fan of Donny & Roberta, which made me buy his CD. Not sorry I did, I still play it for many of my friends who love good music. Can not give enough praise to this CD
This is a really excellent collection........2006-11-06
Even if you don't know much about Donny Hathaway, this collection of songs is a fun mix and it's very moving. It includes some classics with Roberta Flack that are terrific. I enjoy it tremendously.

were still friends.......2007-03-20
I really like this song. It is a great conversational piece. There is no other music like it's kind that sounds like it could be an original version vs. live. It is the talent that they all have together as a band. I highly recommend it. Get your copy while you can.
They don't make voices like this anymore.......2007-02-12
I wnjoyed this cd so much, Donny sung with his soul and heart. You can feel every word he sings. I felt like I was at the concert there with him when I hear this cd. Love it!
Great Old School Music........2007-01-06
This is a fabulous musical composition of some really funky instruments and superb musicians. It is a pleasure listening to authentic instruments and not synthesized sounds from a beat box or computer. Love it.
Get Down with Donny.......2007-01-06
After hearing nothing but good things about this album, I decided to buy it from Amazon. And I'm very glad I did, as this is flat out the best Live soul album money can buy.
From the very first track, a smokin' cover of Marvin Gaye's "What's Goin' On?", to the last, an extended jam session that will get your feet moving involuntarily and your heart swelling and soaring, this album is a masterpiece. Donny's brilliant singing and virtuoso keyboard playing is backed up by a band that is as tight and solid as any you will ever hear, and they even make the cover songs, such as Gaye's classic and John Lennon's "Jealous Guy", their own.
I can' recommend this album highly enough. It just gets better with each listen, and is perhaps one of the top 5 best unknown albums of all time. if you've got this far, you know you want to buy it, so do it. You will not be sorry. Oh, and it is a great party record, and an awesome makeout record too. Five stars.

With a series of terrific albums, Cassandra Wilson has established herself as one of the day's great vocalists and, in branching out from jazz into blues and folk and pop, paved the way for genre-crossing stars including Norah Jones. But the Mississippi native has rarely sounded as relaxed or winning as she does on "Thunderbird," which teams her with the stalwart O Brother Where Art Thou? producer T Bone Burnett. Recorded mostly in Los Angeles, the album is noteworthy not only for its roomy, atmospheric sound and experimental touches, but also for its improvised-in-the-studio approach. Working with innovative Burnett regulars including keyboardist (and co-producer) Keefus Ciancia, guitarist Marc Ribot, and drumming legend Jim Keltner, Wilson delivers such offbeat delights as "Going to Mexico," a dreamlike, funk-tinged tune built on a sample of "Hey Pocky A-Way" by New Orleans' Wild Tchoupitoulas. Eschewing the well-known pop tunes she usually covers, she lends her huskily seductive vocals to Jakob Dylan's wistful "Closer to You" and Burnett's dark "Strike a Match," to which she claimed co-ownership by changing the time signature and adding a lyric. The inspired contributors also include programmer and bassist Mike Elizondo (producer of Fiona Apple's "Extraordinary Machine") and guitarist Colin Linden, who wails on a gripping extended reading of Blind Lemon Jefferson's "Easy Rider" and duets with Wilson on the cowboy classic "Red River Valley," which eloquently sums up her ability to breathe jazz meaning into anything she chooses. --Lloyd Sachs
Customer Reviews:
Pick One..........2007-05-01
Funky, sultry, bluesy, sexy, mellow, haunting, hypnotic, cool...this CD has it all and then some. From the opening beats of Go To Mexico to the final chords of Tarot, this is an incredibly hot disc. Wilson has certainly hooked me with her absolutely gorgeous vocals, but the music on this CD is so darn good, it doesn't make any sense. This is not your usual Cassandra and if you're looking for something different from her from a purely musical standpoint, then this is it.
The Best, Simply The Best, Singer Going.......2007-04-27
In an era where woman singers are more often judged on appearance than artistic merit Cassandra Wilson (who by the way is a major babe) continues to carve her own path and does it brilliantly. I've said it before and I'll just repeat it; Cassandra Wilson is the best singer, in any style, of her generation, period.
why krall whn u can fly!!.......2007-04-12
yes, indeed, people. and the mispelling of the word "crawl" in the title was INTENTIONAL! This is a true jazzy songbird, not a sibialnt snake shushing through the grashhhh!!
Too Many Pop Covers.......2007-03-11
Simply, this isn't one of Cassandra's best. Her last 2-3 cd's have relied too much on pop covers of various merit which really diminishes the effectiveness of one of the most marvellous voices in jazz-blues. I have seen her live several times and she outstanding as a performer and unequalled in the jazz-blues genre, but straying so far (for a wider commercial appeal?) from her blues roots only serves to murk her vocal and musical identity. My fear is this wonderful vocalist will end up in the same situation as Etta James who abandoned her Texas blues roots for a not very convincing or engaging party rock-blues repertoire.
Thunderbird is truly a classic.......2007-03-08
I really love this new album! It is different from her usual style but it's still Cassandra all the same. I love the way her smoky voice rides and intertwines with the deep base and percussions.Especially tracks like "Closer to You", "It would Be So Easy", "Poet" and "Strike a Match". You have a great introduction to her new style with "Go to Mexico" and of course her classic "bluesy" ballad styles with "Easy Rider" and "Red River Valley". My husband who had never heard of her can't get enough of this new album!
The old adage rings true...Like fine wine, she get's better with age!

Minnie Riperton's untimely death from breast cancer (in 1979 at the age of 32) robbed the world of one its truly great, truly distinctive voices. Her operatically-trained, five-octave instrument was the very model of beauty and control. Consequently, her signature tune, "Lovin' You," is likely the breeziest bit of pop you may ever hear. In addition to her own songs, Riperton also makes light work of material as lovely and strong as Stevie Wonder's "Perfect Angel" and Joni Mitchell's "Woman of Heart and Mind." The only misstep on this collection, in fact, is yet another unnecessary take of The Doors' "Light My Fire." --Michael Ruby

WHAT MORE CAN I SAY...........IT'S MINNIE.........LEFT US TOO SOON.......2007-01-24
you know, that cancer is a whole 'nother monster. this cd is the reason that i am saying this. this is proof positive that minnie left us too soon. i love everything on this. it makes me wanna sit back, look at the blue skies at the beach, grab a cold beverage, and just forget. how minnie and her cohorts were able to perfectly put that vibe within everyone of these songs is beyond me, and that is what makes this so amazing. she will NEVER be forgotten here............right, mariah?
LOVIN' YOU !.......2006-07-04
Minnie Riperton was the "Perfect Angel" of sweet soul music; as Vickie Sue Robinson had the perfect rhythm for dance music. God bless them both !!
A MASTER PIECE!!!.......2006-06-22
FOR THOSE WHO WANT TO HEAR A REAL VOICE WITH REAL MELODIES PLAYING, THIS IS THE CD FOR YOU! THIS WOMAN (MINNIE RIPERTON) WAS SO AMAZING ! I FELL IN LOVE THE FIRST TIME I HEARD THE VOICE. THE KEY TRACKS ARE: "LOVING YOU", "CAN YOU FEEL WHAT I'M SAYIN'", "INSIDE MY LOVE" & "LIGHT MY FIRE". IMPRESSIVE COLLECTION! TRUE FANS SHOULD CHECK OUT THE HARD TO FIND "ADVENTURES IN PARADISE" ALBUM. THIS CD WAS PRODUCED BY: STEVIE WONDER, LEON WARE, MINNIE RIPERTON & RICHARD RUDOLPH. BUY IT! BUY IT! BUY IT!
Still Lovin' You Minnie............2005-08-09
Minnie Riperton...such a beautiful woman with an equally beautiful voice. The younguns aren't ready for this one. This is for those of us that can truly appreciate real music and real talent. This woman had the voice of the most gentle hummingbird. Her songs, quite a few of which were co-written by her husband, told stories. She took our breath away. She was taken from us way too soon, but her voice will live on forever.

good stuff.......2007-05-16
very good collection of blues all over the years of its existence. recommendable.
A Must For The New To The Blues Or The Establihed Fan.......2007-01-14
Having watched this series on PBS, I knew what I was getting when I made this purchase. For anyone new to the blues and wanting a good starter disc for a well rounded taste, this disc is a must have. It affords the listener a sampling of the evolution of the blues sound, beginning with the founders right up to today. For the established blues fan, it's a nice addition to their collection. A great disc for travelling.
A true gift to Humanity..........2006-10-28
Big thanks to the "gods" in heaven and other places were they maybe hangin' out, for gaving Mr. Martin Scorsese the vision and the tools to bring together the past, the present and the future of the history of the Blues music...so every man or woman will not have any excuse not to know that "the blues is the roots and everything else is the fruits...," according to (Willie Dixon)... In short, thank you Martin Scorsese! Exhilarating to say the least!
--"Big Dave" Burleigh, an 'AmeriCanadian' Record Producre/ Artist/ Singer-Songwritre.
Poor Blues Collection.......2006-09-14
As a long time Blues player, I was very disappointed with this set from two perspectives: poor quality recordings on the CD itself (I expected a better digitally mastered sound, and the imprinted sound volume was sorta lower than normal) and the actual collection of selected songs (not overly representative of the best Blues by these artists or Blues in general). I had seen part of it on PBS TV and bought the collection w/o first listening to it. So after spending the big bucks for it, I was sorely disappointed and do NOT recommend it for anyone serious about the Blues. It's just an okay set. There are many other higher quality collections online. Check them out first.
Excellent Blues Compilation!.......2004-03-27
This is a seriously excellent sampler of blues. It gives a great introduction to the genre for those that are either new to the blues or are interested to expand their knowledge of the classics. Of course, Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix make their way onto this CD. BB King and John Lee Hooker are on it, as they should be. I was disappointed not to find a single song by Albert King - I think he made a serious contribution to the blues. Otherwise, it's an interesting and mostly quite a worthy selection.

Unlike many men, Alligator Records never forgets an anniversary. "The country's largest contemporary blues label," as it rightly bills itself, has released multidisc compilations celebrating its 20th, 25th, 30th, and now 35th years. For reasons that aren't entirely clear, only tracks recorded for an artist's first Alligator disc are chosen for this chronologically presented summary of music that stretches from Hound Dog Taylor's electrifying 1971 label debut to Mavis Staples's in 2004. Although the imprint made a tentative stab at reggae in the mid '80s, its roster generally upholds the "genuine houserocking music" credo Alligator has boasted as a tagline since the early days. Whether reviving the careers of blues rockers (Johnny Winter, Roy Buchanan, Lonnie Mack, Elvin Bishop) or ageing icons with plenty of gas left in their tanks (Koko Taylor, Buddy Guy, Katie Webster, Mavis Staples, James Cotton, Guitar Shorty) or finding new blood to carry on the traditions (Michael Burks, Corey Harris, Dave Hole, Tinsley Ellis, Shemekia Copeland), Alligator sets the standard for what an independent label can achieve. These 35 nuggets extracted from a catalog of 225 albums only begin to tell the label's story, but there's not a weak one in the lot. Founder Bruce Iglauer's intriguing and insightful liner notes for each act add depth to the tunes, making 35x35 a representative sampler that's also an exhilarating listening experience, and a fascinating overview of American roots music. --Hal Horowitz
Album Description
35 X 35 is not just another best-of compilation. Alligator founder and president Bruce Iglauer and staff chose to spotlight songs from the Alligator debut release from each featured artist. From "She's Gone" (the very first track on the very first Alligator album, 1971's Hound Dog Taylor and the HouseRockers) to the legendary Mavis Staples' chilling "A Dying Man's Plea," 35 X 35 is effectively a chronological history of Alligator, a story told in music highlighting every style of blues and roots music the company has released. From the searing hard blues of Hound Dog Taylor, Son Seals, Albert Collins, Luther Allison, Koko Taylor and Buddy Guy to harmonica-driven workouts from Big Walter Horton, Carey Bell, James Cotton, Charlie Musselwhite and William Clarke to the Gulf Coast piano blues of Professor Longhair, Katie Webster and Marcia Ball to the acoustic music of Saffire--The Uppity Blues Women and Corey Harris, it is clear that Alligator Records has been, and will remain, at the forefront of modern blues music in all of its many shades. With personal notes on each track from Iglauer in the accompanying 40-page booklet, 35 X 35 is proof of the staunchly independent label's single-minded vision for all these years: to record nothing but deeply rooted "Genuine Houserockin' Music."

great retrospective. true blues - soulful, raw & edgy, fun, smooth, heartbreaking - it's all here. highly recommended!
A fabulous bargain.......2007-02-26
You're paying about 35 cents a song for great contemporary blues performances. I don't think there's a better bargain on Amazon. Very guitar centric, some good harmonica solos too. Grab it if you like electric guitars playing blues.
Genuine Soul Rockin' Music.......2006-09-07
Even though this package only compiles material from Alligator Records, you probably won't find a more fascinating tour through the history of the Blues over the last 35 years. Of course, Alligator has a knack for signing up the most interesting Blues maestros. This compilation shows the development of cutting-edge Blues over the namesake era, ever since Alligator's inaugural release with Hound Dog Taylor in 1971. During much of this era, the Blues was still progressing, before settling into the respectful revivalism of recent years. In the 70s, Alligator was at the forefront with new artists who added flavor to tried-and-true styles, like the sinister Son Seals or the groovy Lonnie Brooks. Also during that decade, Alligator brought several veteran masters back into prominence, with powerful new material by the likes of Koko Taylor, Buddy Guy, and Professor Longhair (noteworthy for his authoritative New Orleans style). As this compilation rumbles along, we hear a surprising amount of experimentation and progression in the 1980s, as interesting new artists expanded the basic template of the Blues, including some great finds like Lil' Mo & the Blues Imperials and Little Charlie & the Nightcats. The songs here from the 90s and 00s show that even the genius artists at Alligator followed the trend in Blues to solidify the classic template, with technical chops becoming more important than innovation - notwithstanding intriguing gospel-inflected works from the Holmes Brothers and the queenly Mavis Staples. But thanks to the impeccable expertise and taste exercised by Alligator when signing masters both new and old, this compilation is a must for any fan or historian of modern Blues. [~doomsdayer520~]
A great range of great artists.......2006-06-02
This double-CD set has great artists, great selections from the artists, and a killer set of liner packaging. You get some choice information and showings by legendary cats as well as non-household names, with explanations as to why they were great (as if the music wasn't doing that job already). And at the price, you can't beat the value.
A great collection for anyone.......2006-04-27
If you're just getting into contemporary blues or you've been listening for awhile, you're going to love this collection. Alligator has been one of the class acts of the indie labels for a long time and these discs give you an idea why they are so well thought of. 35 artists doing the first track from their first Alligator release. Marica Ball, Coco Montoya, Lonnie Mack, Johnny Winter, William Clarke and the list goes on with not a weak cut in the carload. These type of samplers are great if you're just getting into this type of music since you do get a wide selection of artists and styles. Alligator has released double disc anniversary sets in honor of yeas 20, 25, 30 and now, 35. They're all great to listen to, so grab one or all of them and have yourself a party with genuine houserocking music from people who know how to do it.

The unwritten rules for doo-wop groups were deceptively simple: name your group after a bird (the Wrens, the Flamingos) or a car (the Cadillacs, the El Dorados), practice your two-, three-, or four-part harmonies on a neighborhood street corner or in the back of a candy store, and sing songs about how much you love your baby. It might have seemed like an obvious formula, but getting it just right was never easy. When it worked, that formula created some of the most joyful and unforgettable music of the 20th century. From the Orioles ("It's Too Soon to Know") to Frankie Lymon & the Teenagers ("I Want You to Be My Girl"), this four-CD collection is without a doubt the definitive introduction to the rock & roll vocal music of the 1950s and early '60s. --Percy Keegan
Customer Reviews:
Doo Wop Box is a necessity for collectors and fans.......2007-03-26
Although the Doo Wop craze is before my generation, I've always had a fascination with the music and the stories behind the music. This collection satisfied my craving for both great music and wonderful stories about the artists and the era. If you are even a casual fan of this genre do yourself a favor and get this collection-I looked at several others and I'm so happy I went with this one.
the original era of rock music.......2007-01-19
Can u imagine life as a teenager before 1953? having to listen to your parents music? THe andrews sisters? Yuck. These artists contributed not only to MUSIC but the state of world culture in an unimaginable way. They are certianly unsung heros that put way more on the line than white boys from England ever did.
the booklet alone is worth the price. i paid 60 dollars originally for this. One of 3 in a series. I have all 3, the only 3 box sets I own. I do a college rock radio show in LA and these gems are fun to squeeze into the show.

Doo Wop.......2007-01-12
This was the best collection of music from 1948-1987. It brings back memories of the vocal groups we have maybe forgotten their names but the music we can remember. My favorite era for this music was 1955-57. All of us remember the strong emotions of some love we had at the time when we listen to Why Do Fools Fall in Love or Devil or Angel. I am so thankful that some company or group of people are preserving this music. I even listen to it with my grandchildren and they can sing some of the words a musical hertiage to pass on.

The Best Single Disk Compilation of Curtis Mayfield Work....!!!!.......2006-08-03
From the moment, he sang with `The Impressions', it was clear that singer "Curtis Mayfield", wasn't your average soul/R&B Singer. His vocals were seemingly effortlessly able to move from a Soft warm tone, to a gritty and ominous mood to the next. And along with being an accomplished guitarist (Something not usually associated with Soul/R&B singers), an accomplished singer / songwriter and a producer of some note. He remained a hugely talented individual, and one that although most people will undoubtedly know him for his exceptional "Superfly" soundtrack (and possibly his debut "Curtis" studio album), an artist that truly deserves something of a current re-evaluation of his musical output.
Firstly, it's important to note that this `Rhino' label release focuses squarely on his solo output, so those looking for something that includes his work with the Impressions, will need to look elsewhere. But as is the way with `Rhino's' releases, you get a very concise and excellently compiled album, that skilfully manages to includes the hits, but also include any possibly overlooked gems, that only a true interest in the artists work can bring. So have `Rhino' somehow managed to squeeze an impressive song catalogue into the 16 tracks that make up this collection???. Well...yes they have!!!, and remarkably they've pulled it off in such a truly impressive manner....so what you get are the well known classics, such as the gritty and urban grooves of "Freddie's Dead", "Superfly", & "Pusherman".. from his definitive Blaxploitation soundtrack "Superfly"...all moody funk, stinging brass and horn sections, dark psychedelic soul & cautionary R&B. And the mood changes with the inclusion of material from his "Curtis" album, with tracks such as: "(Don't Worry) If There's A Hell Below We're All Going To Go", "The Makings of You" & "Move on Up", that take the more subtle intimacy and lush arrangements, and progressive Soul of that album, and make for a varied listening experience. And here's why `Rhino' always generally impress me, by including tracks that maybe the causal listener (such as myself), probably won't be overly familiar with, and include them in their compilations so we can appreciate the inclusion of tracks such like : "Do Do Wap is Strong in Here", "Between you Baby and Me" & "Do be Down", which may well be required listening for those that are real fans of Mayfield's work. But for anyone fairly new to Curtis' work, or hasn't been following his career, these are like undiscovered musical nuggets of gold. And it yet again (in my eyes) establishes the `Rhino' label as one of the most consistently superb compilers of Soul or R&B artists.
Personally speaking...I wished that this could have been stretched out into a double-CD editon, as several of his essential cuts from "Superfly", and his "Curtis" studio album, didn't quite make the cut, and even some of his instrumentals literally begged to be included, and whilst I'm on the subject, why no material from his seminal "Curtis Live" album??....but again this is merely nitpicking at what has been created, to be a reasonably priced, one CD compilation of Mayfield's work, and even the die-hard fans that will probably head for the Double-disk Anthology (which includes his work with `The Impressions') will probably sneer. Even they would agree, that is probably the most perfectly complied single disk compilation of one of Soul/R&B finest singer/songwriters.

Best collection of the late, great Curtis Mayfield, of his solo work. God rest your soul !!
Brothas & Sistas.......2006-01-18
Good compilation of grooves, but its missing what was in my mind mayfield's best joint " diamond in the back". Anyway, its worth pickin up if u feel the funk. Curtis was the original gangsta in the music industry. When i was growin up in Watts in the late 70's he was big on the block like crack rock. He sung about real issues for ghetto youth and we all overstood what he was about. Curtis, along with Marvin Gaye and Willie Hutch, Made me feel proud to be black in the 70's.
Best Available Anthology of Mayfield's Solo Work.......2005-01-22
Song per song, the "Very Best of Curtis Mayfield" issued by the venerable collector's label, Rhino Records in 1997 remains the definitive single CD collection of Curtis Mayfield's post-Impressions career. Mayfield's early songs like "People Get Ready" and "Amen" have become revered classics that are as deeply woven into fabric of American folkways as Leadbelly's "Midnight Special" or Woody Guthrie's "This Land Is Your Land." To fully appreciate the scope of Mayfield's career one would have to hear his early Sixties hits with the Impressions plus a quartet of Seventies solo albums, "Curtis", "Roots", the long out of issue "Let's Do Again" and his ubiquitous soundtrack to the movie "Superfly."
Curtis Mayfield, as a producer for the black oriented music label Okeh, gained creative control over his music well before many of his peers at the squeaky clean, image conscious Motown label. Mayfield and the Impressions posed for the album cover for 1968's "This Is My Country" amid the ruins of a vacant building in a Chicago neighborhood plundered by urban renewal. Well before Marvin Gaye fought Motown's Barry Gordy to produce the landmark "What's Going On" in 1971, Mayfield had achieved cross-over success largely on his accomplishments as a socially conscious performer and composer.
He sang in a falsetto that was every bit as winsome as Smokey Robinson's but the purity of the Mayfield falsetto counter pointed his raw unflinching lyrics and lent sense of urgency to his cry for justice. While Smokey sang about joy of a "Special Occasion", Curtis sang about "The Hell Down Below We're All Going To." Mayfield's power was the deeply personal first-person perspective of his lyrics. He directly addressed African American community as both a participant and observer in his musical narratives.
Songs like "Move On Up", "Future Shock" will surprise the casually acquainted, who thought Mayfield's career began and ended with the blockbuster soundtrack of "Superfly" in 1972. The predatory world of junkies, hustlers and drug dealers against the bleak urban squalor of "Superfly" still delivers a knockout blow to the heart. In contrast to today's predatory hip-hop ethic, Mayfield saw the thug-life through the eyes of its victims.
New Love.......2004-06-10
I hadn't even heard of Curtis Mayfield before this year. At a college party where me and my friend were literally the only people there, they were playing "Freddie's Dead." My 1st thought was what was this? Where's the "real" music? No wonder no one's here. My friend was like u have to feel the lyrics. He's talking about a junkie, about the consequences of being marginalized in society. This appealed to the activist in me and the funky arrangement peaked my musical curiosity. After reading a book that discussed his music, I knew I had to give him a try. I'm so glad I did. This is pure genius! I love "Pusherman" which is also briefly featured in one of my favorite movies Money Talks. Every song is genius. It's one of those rare CDs where I have to here the entire thing from start to finish. All his songs are versatile yet have his own signature style. I especially love that they all have a message. I will be rockin it in my car for a while, turning all my young friends on to some true music. Thanks everybody for the reviews! I'm so glad I checked this out! Peace and love.
