5 out of 5 stars 5 Stars to the Guy in the Corner.......2006-11-16

This is one of those albums that subtly grows on you after a couple of runs through the CD player. No one has yet compared it to any of Theivery's other albums - which are all balanced and intoxicating. Yet, I don't think you can. Sounds from the Thievery Hi-Fi is on a totally different plain than any of Thievery's more recent releases. Perhaps Hi-Fi is a couple stories down with an ambiance that truly embraces the listener even through the transition of tracks. Everything seems natural.

If you've listened to more recent albums from this duo you've probably become addicted to the seductive vocals and modest choruses that become addictive over time. Not so here...Instead this album produces easy beats, slow constructions of tracks, and mellow dramatic tones that seem to open doors to trance and highly reflective states. In other words, great background music that can also be enjoyed with a little concentration.

For myself, this album brings back the nostalgia of the North Shore and the smell of pineapples. Just the whole mood of strolling by palm trees with the Pacific in the background seemed to compliment this music to an even higher state...which I'm thankful to still remember.

Give this guy in the corner a try...you might be impressed.

5 out of 5 stars Serious Addiction........2006-03-12

My addiction to this stuff is way over the top. I need to get in touch with these dudes so i can croon discordant and seductive!!! If i couldnt describe myself in words, which i cant, this type style of flow would do it. Excellent. Picked this up last nite at Tower. Each album ages sweet! Now to finish my collection.

*Rubbing hands greedily.

5 out of 5 stars This is a great CD.......2006-03-06

This is a great CD, every track is different but good. I have all their other CDs and this one completes my collection. Most music in this genere fall into one of two catagories. The more pop-oriented bands like Morcheeba, Zero 7, Hooverphonic, etc. or the more unusual ones like Stereolab, Spicehouse, Portishead, etc. Theivery Corporation is somewhere in the middle. They have good songs put together in unique ways. Their music is always refreshing. My favorite songs on this CD are; The Oscillator, Sun, Moon, and Stars, Incident At Gate 7 and Transcendence. If you like Trip-Hop/Chill, you can't go wrong with any of their albums.

5 out of 5 stars A very nice re-release.......2006-01-25

Having re-released their other albums as digipaks, Thievery Corporation did so with their first album. This is technically a re-release of the 1999 re-release, with Transcendence, Scene at the Open Air Market, Encounter in Bahia, Assault on Babylon, and One. They have removed the track Manha (which doesn't appear on the original CD anyway), which is not a big loss, and adds two tracks: Sun, Moon and Stars (from the Incident at Gate 7 single), and The Sleeper Car (from the 38.45 single). Sun, Moon, and Stars is a very nice uptempo song with a reggae-style beat, and The Sleeper Car is a very laid-back relaxed song. This is a great purchase if you didn't have these songs. Now, if they would just get around to compiling all their other B-sides, we'd be in business.

5 out of 5 stars The Complete Piano Music of Scott Joplin.......2007-06-08

John Arpin does a great job with these pieces. The songs carry a consistent sound and are played very close to as-written, which comes and goes with old ragtime pieces. The stamping on Stop-Time Rag doesn't have a consistent sound to it, can be a little distracting. Everything else is great, overall I think that it's a great buy, I'm very happy with it.

2 out of 5 stars Another Performer Rewrites Joplin's Masterpieces.......2007-05-31

Once again, another performer feels the need to rewrite the music of the King of Ragtime. Scott Joplin spins in his grave each and every time this recording is played.

Again, to those who believe that concert music is meant to be rewritten by each and every performer I ask, is the same treatment also acceptable for Chopin's and Rachmaninoff's music? Would "Moonlight Sonata" sound better if played at twice the tempo and with a reprise of the first Adagio movement thrown in at the end? Obviously, the answer to these questions is a resounding NO!, so why does one of America's greatest composers get such disrespect?

Interpretation is an integral part of every performance. Adding one's own notes, phrases and chords where none should be is not. Randomly changing the structure of the piece is not. Playing a piece at twice the indicated tempo is not.

One the plus side, the depth of this collection is outstanding. Joplin's lesser known pieces like "Harmony Club Waltz" really shine. The recording is decent in quality, although a bit bassy in places.

While its been stated before, I feel its worth repeating: Buy Joshua Rifkin's performances of Joplin in order to hear how the Master intended his pieces to sound.

4 out of 5 stars complete piano music of Scott Joplin on 4 CD's.......2007-02-14

Although all of the music is terrific it is rather a lot of a similar sound. I think I would have preferred 2 CD's of selected piano works of Scott Joplin. But I did get the music at a good price.

5 out of 5 stars Ragtime Marvel.......2005-10-09

This collection of Scott Joplin's piano music is outstanding. As a lover of ragtime which was a prelude to jazz, I am thoroughly enjoying this collection. If you are not a lover of jazz, you may be a lover of ragtime. Jazz can sometimes be grating on the nerves, whereas ragtime lifts the spirit.

3 out of 5 stars Complete, but poor quality.......2005-09-25

I have been learning some ragtime and wanted to hear more to find other selections to learn. Listened to Maple Leaf Rag, my favorite, first and was disappointed. Listened to others and was more disappointed. Maple flies - much faster than anyone would play it, you can't make out some of the phrases. And talk about ad libs - Tempo, dynamics, embelishments, nuances - I really think he plays some wrong notes too because he's going so fast. It's really a poor recording - and that's just on Maple Leaf. Others with "intros" start quick and then there's a grand pause, not a rest, but nearly a five second break. It's hard to argue how Joplin would have played it, but this is hardly anything I want to try to imitate. The only qualitating factor is the number of songs for the price. A lot of variety of a poor interpretation is only worth 3 stars. if that. Look for Rifkin or a copy that is as written to listen to first, then go for the ad libs and "artistic interpretations"

KCRW's Morning Becomes Eclectic program has always managed to capture some of music's most talented voices, some of them just young bands with a cult following, others who are seasoned vets returning to the beloved California radio station that gave them their first live broadcast. The latest series is yet another winsome venture, encompassing folk and pop performances so delicate and fresh, it's hard to believe no retouching was performed (KCRW's disclaimer swears it wasn't). Beck tips his hat with a baritone cover of the country classic "Lonesome Whistle," which segues nicely into David Gray's tender performance of his Triple-A hit, "Babylon." Travis's "Driftwood" single benefits greatly from its production-free moment, allowing singer Fran Healy's charming brogue to shine; likewise, Badly Drawn Boy (a.k.a. Damon Gough) steps up to the mic with "Magic in the Air," a pre-summer ballad that serves as a great pitch for the Brit performer's offbeat charm. Bebel Gilberto's lustrous "August Day Song" and Yo-Yo Ma's Bach prelude widen the album's scope, proving KCRW's "eclectic" banner is not a gimmick, but a philosophy that has made Nic Harcourt's program a necessary refuge for experimental listeners. --Kristy Martin

3 out of 5 stars Shivaree who?.......2003-05-03

Most people had never heard of Shivaree until this CD came out and I've been listening to her for years. The Song Goodnight Moon is just so cool and different from anything else I've ever heard. Love it love it love it!

4 out of 5 stars Fresh and tasty.......2003-02-22

This is a pleasure to listen to: players with serious chops playing an appealing variety of styles. The unprocessed in-studio recordings are extremely clean. This will get serious rotation, both for parties and in my headphones at work. I'll also be checking out more titles in this series - hats off to KCRW for giving listeners something way better than the usual mugs and tote bags.

5 out of 5 stars Best compilation since the Pulp Fiction soundtrack.......2002-12-27

This is one of those rare, skillful compilations that contains not a single clunker. The production is great, and the track list includes several brilliant songs by more obscure artists such as Supreme Beings of Leisure and Bebel Gilberto. My only issue is putting Yo Yo Ma in the first track; while it is a great classical recording I think it may falsely lead newcomers to think the rest of the compilation follows in the same vein.

5 out of 5 stars Sounds Eclectic sounds great!.......2002-04-03

Ill have to say this has been one of the best buys ive made lately. You get exclusive recordings from great artists, performing great songs beautifully. Its a shame there isnt a second volume or that this isnt a double cd. Its starts out with a beautifully and impressive performance by YO-YO Ma on cello doing bach. Which could be considered one of the greatest and weirdest opening songs on a compilation cd. Then you get Beck doing a wonderful song: lonesome whistle... his voice sounds so pure and true, i didnt know he could sing that way... The supreme beings of leisure play an awsome track and Neil Finn plays Throw your arms around me... this is one of the best covers of the song that ive heard... his voice fits almost perfectly... patti smith, dandy warhols, willie nelson... man... this is one of the best compilations i own and it has given me a reason to believe that compilations can be awsome again!!

4 out of 5 stars GOOD.......2001-09-18

Solid. Tasteful. Nice. It's everything you'd expect from a KCRW compilation - a nice break from all the low brow intelligence of Eminem or Destiny's Child and N'Sync.

5 out of 5 stars The disc that pulled me in.......2005-11-14

Its hard to believe this disc came out in 1996. Depending on which way you look at Thievery Corporation, and which specific aspects you focus on in their later albums, you could say that they've come along way. You could also say they've stayed the course the entire journey.

This, the debut album, was the second Thievery Corporation disc I purchased, the first being Richest Man in Babylon. I've always felt that for newcomers, Richest Man in Babylon is the best starting point - but for what its worth, this disc could be as well.

This disc has the same variety of genres and flavours that can be found in any Thievery Corporation disc. I find that this disc pumps out a little more bass than the others, especially in the first two songs, which kind of flow into one another. Ethnic downtempo is present, (with that unmistakable Thievery Corp. flavour), but some songs are more reggae-influenced, especially with the voice-overs.

As far as replay value goes, this disc is the one that makes an appearance most often. Because of the typical Thievery Corp. song variations, it can be played in a lot of different situations. I find its very appropriate late night music, whether hosting a party or driving through city streets.

If there was any T.C. disc more appropriate in a dark, smoke-filled lounge, this is it. Go grab that martini. Let Sounds From The Thievery Hi-Fi do the rest.

One thing to note: I seem to have the UK edition which does not have the songs "Manha" and "Encounter In Bahia." I can't speak for these two songs.

4 out of 5 stars keep playing it.......2005-09-16

perhaps not their best album in comparison to 'the mirror conspiracy', but good and solid- you will not regret you bought it. so buy it...hurry!

3 out of 5 stars Good, but not great........2005-08-02

This is Thievery Corporation's first album, released shortly after the talented "duo" hooked up in DC. If you're familiar with their later works, i.e. The Mirror Conspiracy or the Cosmic Game- then you'll notice this cd is lacking in some of the many intricacies that can be found there. Although still a good cd, it doesn't last as long in my changer as - say - DJ Kicks.

4 out of 5 stars Chillout staples offer a near-masterpiece.......2004-07-19

For anyone new to chillout, World lounge or Brazilectro, "Sounds from the Thievery Hi-Fi" is as good a place to start as any. Still low-key while maintaining a driving sense of rhythm, Thievery Corporation prove themselves an essential electronica act on their first collection of original material (the band is also well-known for their remix and compilation work).

Tracks like "2001 A Spliff Odyssey" and "The Oscillator" beg for a sofa and a shaker of martinis at 2 a.m., and more insistent groovers like "Shaolin Satellite" and "Univeral Highness" are sure to breathe some life into any social gathering. Other cuts aren't so easy to peg; "The Glass Bead Game" spends almost four minutes as a mystical Bossa Nova before introducing a head-bobber of a drum loop, and "Incident at Gate 7" casts an ethereal spell that almost puts a sustaining effect on its funky rhythms.

The only thing that could have been shaken up a bit is the disc's range of tempo...sometimes the tracks are better appreciated when played in a changer rather than taking on all sixteen at once. But either way, "Sounds from the Thievery Hi-Fi" is solid proof that between their own fantastic work and their forward-thinking Eighteenth Street Music label, Thievery Corporation are clearly here for the long haul.

5 out of 5 stars The Beginning of a Legacy.......2004-05-23

This is the first Thievery Corporation CD, and a monumental one at that. A groovy blend of Dub, Jazz, and Drums is the only way I can describe this CD. Thievery Corp nowadays has added more instruments and progressed their sound more but still; any Thievery Corporation fan should pickup this classic. Lay back and enjoy this amazing CD.

5 out of 5 stars Available at retailers for about $18.......2006-12-21

Excellent collection - but there are re-sellers listed here that are selling this for as much $50 or $60. Yikes, most major retailers are selling this complete set for $18 - so beware.

5 out of 5 stars A classic compilation.......2006-10-07

This collection is one of my most treasured possessions. (My father gave me the original 5-album set in the 70's when it was originally released on vinyl.)

This is the definitive collection of Scott Joplin's work. Richard Zimmerman provides wonderful performances that accurately reflect Joplin's intentions. (As evidence beyond my personal opinion, I submit the recent releases of digital recordings made from Joplin's piano rolls.)

A few points to consider regarding negative comments you may encounter in other reviews:
* This is a digital recording from an analog master. Lack of quality in the recording does not imply a lackluster performance.
* This is a complete collection. Some similarity is due to Joplin re-exploring melodic themes. But some is due to the fact that these are "rags". One might as well complain that all 50's doo-wop (or all 70's disco) sounds the same.
* Many pieces of the period exhibit formal musical structures, such as the marches of John Phillips Sousa. (Both Sousa and Joplin performed at the 1904 World's Fair in St. Louis.) Actually, Joplin is responsible for extending the formal boundaries of ragtime to concert waltzes (Bethena) and opera (A Guest of Honor, Treemonisha)
* This is probably one of the few collections which will include selections from "Treemonisha". It is my understanding that after the initial release, one of Joplin's descendants made a copyright claim that was upheld in court. (I presume the issue was that Joplin had to finance "Treemonisha" himself, and therefore the customary performance clearances did not cover those selections.)

For ragtime students and enthusiasts, this is a "must-have" collection at a very affordable price.

1 out of 5 stars A dis-service to Joplin.......2006-02-01

Sadly, the only virtue this set possesses is completeness.

The pianist does not play Joplin's pieces "as written", the piano is of poor quality, and not properly in tune.

This is emphatically NOT the set to buy. A far better set, beautifully annotated and well played on a good concert grand piano, is the complete works played by Guido Nielsen on the Basta Label.

This set is a dis-service to Joplin and his music. He deserves better, and gets it elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars Unique .......2004-10-19

I have several cd sets of Joplin's music: Rifkin, Arpo, Nielsen, and Zimmerman. All have their excellent qualities. What sets Zimmerman's set apart is the inclusion of excerpts from Joplin's opera, Treemonisha---especially "A Real Slow Drag." Why the other sets do not include excerpts from Treemonisha, I don't know---because they are some of his most beautiful and joyful pieces of music. Of course, you can hear the orchestrated version of Treemonisha in the Houston Grand Opera recording, and it is spectacular. But Zimmerman's piano version, especially of "A Real Slow Drag," is not to be missed.

5 out of 5 stars Great set.......2001-10-16

I guess this will be a rather one sided review. I have been a fan of Scott Joplin since I first learned to play a piano.

I was shocked to see that one reviewer thought it all sounded the same. How silly. All of Frank Sinatra's music sounds like Frank Sinatra. All of Led Zeppelin sounds like Led Zeppelin. So, if the songs were drastically different, I would question if the same author composed them. As it is, though, each song on this set is fantastic!!

I don't know that I have heard of Richard Zimmerman, and I was a little leary as to what I would be getting, I certainly was impressed. Without a doubt the best renditions of "Weeping Willow" and "Bethena" I have heard, and at least a dozen songs I didn't know Joplin wrote.

Without a doubt, this album is fantastic. A very good price, as well.

Santa Cruz product Miguel Migs gently but firmly tears the roof off with 24th St Sounds, his latest example of the sunny, uptempo chill music known as "deep" house. As practiced by Migs, Ben Watt, King Britt and others, the style takes the raunch of classic house and replaces it with a polished cocktail vibe, creating a hybrid your parents might even enjoy. Not to say that it doesn't kick; 24th St Sounds is a smooth ride, but it's also a relentless--and fantastic--dance record. Migs knows how to blend, and his positive energy would sound just as good in a grimy New York basement club as it would at a Riviera beach bash. He starts hot, leaving the soft melodies in the background on floor stompers like "Waiting." After a slight lull, he picks up again for the luminous "You Can't Stop," and backs off with the spare, borderline electro of Trevor Lovey's "The Bounce." The second disc, culled from Migs's studio catalog, sounds more thrown together and lacks disc 1's drive and cohesion. But really, it's hard to get too much of 24th St Sounds, as long as you're in a good mood (or won't mind being put into one). --Matthew Cooke

Album Description

At the forefront of dance music's deeper realm, stands Miguel Migs - personifying the chilled-out, soul-driven vibe. Combining the best of both the electronic music world with live instrumentation, he creates an organic-soulful touch to his original productions and remixes.

In the past few years alone, Miguel has quietly put out more than 90 quality, original cuts and remixes on seminal independent labels like Naked Music, Yoshitoshi, NRK, Black Vinyl, Large, Chez, and Transport. All of which have made waves sliding into the record bags of top deep house DJs across the globe, hit DJ hype charts of international media, and found their way onto numerous compilations. Miguel has since found himself on the remixer A-list of dance music's top record labels and producers, not to mention his remixes for superstar artists like Macy Gray, Lionel Richie and Britney Spears.

As a DJ, Miguel maintains the same elements to his sets, as to his productions. Combining a variety of influences and styles fused together. Funky, Deep, soulful, bumping house music. Miguel currently can be found regularly traveling the globe as one of the industries top-leading DJ's, as well as at home in the studio creating music, which is his main love and passion.

4 out of 5 stars Miguel's rockin' downtown sounds.......2006-09-30

With 24th Street Sounds, master mixer miguel migs goes for broke and pumps up the volume. There are some absolutely electric tracks on this double disc, in particular the remedy, one two one two, waiting, don't change, the bounce, making moves and bump selecta. Make plenty of room in your collection for some big sounds

5 out of 5 stars Deep Deep.......2006-05-24

This is a nice deep house production. If you like this, check out the first full length CD for producer Quentin Allen as Karu. There are other 12" releases on Silver Network, Dadhouse, Winding Road, Mimosa & Smooth Agent. This CD is a very consistant production with a good blend of jazz, hip-hop, techno, neo-soul, and deep house all together. The beats are very crisp and sound good in the car, the house or the club. Some songs tastefully use vocal snippets to add flavor. There is even a track featuring Warren Harris aka Hanna (Shadow Records, Silver Network, Flat & Round, Freerange). If you want good quality deep house, this CD is for you.

5 out of 5 stars This is barely a classic dance album - the second disc helps A LOT to give it "5" stars - dance fans will still love it.......2006-01-10

If it weren't for the second disc here, this would've just been a very good album and I would've given it "4.5" stars. The first disc is great dance stuff, but it also tends to get a little repetitive. Despite that, however, I could definitely see this being played at a semi-sophisticated dance party. It's essentially a jazz-influenced dance album that I can't quite find the right words to explain. It's definitely interesting stuff and good on its own - the production is fantastic. What makes this a classic, though, is the second disc. This is where Miguel Migs truly shows us his skills, and as a whole it's less repetitive and a lot more interesting. Basically every song on it is different, and most of them are fun to listen to. With a combined total of 28 tracks, this is a GREAT buy! Dance and Miguel Migs fans should love this album, and I think it even has relatively good appeal otherwise. All in all this is highly recommended!

Highlights include:
the entire album(s)!

3 out of 5 stars Someone set the drum machine to auto.......2005-12-04

I normal like this genre of music but this double CD is just mixed beats and nothing new.

5 out of 5 stars Best Electronic CD I've had in while!.......2005-09-24

This is one of those cds you start liking just ok, and then totally loving it. This cd is very well worked, and has some very very good standout tracks that you would be lucky to hear on the floor of a dance club. The quality of recording, beats, and samples is just amazing. Especially good tracks include Mig's "Come On (deeper mood mix)," Generous Flavour's "Waiting," and especially Jean Marie K & Oliver Fox's "You Can't Stop." While the reviews say the second cd is not as coherent I would have to disagree. The second disk is all Miguel Migs, and is smoother/more laid back than the first. Here there are some amazing standout tracks too that put you in awesome moods. "Don't Stand There," "Making Moves," and probably one of the smoothest grooves on the cd "The Remedy." Definitely worth buying if you enjoy other works by naked music or if you like Dance music with some substance to it.

"Music Sounds Better with You," with its infectious horn samples, groove-laden bass hooks, and a lusty Benjamin Diamond vocal slowed to a crawl, quickly went from a 1998 Winter Music Conference hit in Miami to a prime mover of dance floors everywhere, becoming one of the biggest selling house singles of all time. Masterminded by Thomas Bangalter, one half of Daft Punk, the song's a sinful pleasure. Repetition rules the record, with no verse or bridge, only a chorus ("Ooooh, baby, I feel like music sounds better with you," sung by Diamond) to propel the song. Sprinkle a little Stardust and voilà, you have a dance-music classic. --Tricia Romano

This album is to House what "Babe I'm Gonna Leave You" by Led Zeppelin is to Rock. No matter how many times you hear it it still sounds just as good as the first time you heard it. Does that mean it's The Perfect House Song? I'd say so... What, you're still sitting down at your computer? Well get up and go get this CD!

5 out of 5 stars Just Right.......2004-12-14

First saw the video (actually heard the music first and came running) on TV when I was living in Stuttgart. Went out that afternoon and bought the single and played that CD until it melted (or just about). Between the 80's retro-ish video and the filter house/disco Daft Punk style music it just can't get any better-at least I haven't heard anything as good as or better yet-and that was almost 6 years ago (oh wow I'm getting old). I heard rumors that the cooperative that is/was Stardust was going to get together and make a full length album. Maybe it's better that they didn't and left this gem with us at the top of their game. Anyhow-its still enjoyable and will probably be for many, many years.

5 out of 5 stars Great.......2004-05-15

This isnt my favourite song but it is one of my favs. I am obsessed with Daft Punk and the first time I heard this song I new it was one of Thomas Bangalter masterful tunes. I highly recomend getting your hands on this CD it is great, you would be able to really get into this CD if u can highly respect and appreciate Toms work like I do also Mr Braxe and Mr Diamond do an excellent job in this CD, So just buy it.

5 out of 5 stars Pure Listening Pleasure!!!.......2003-02-13

Imaging yourself, right there on Ibiza, dancing on the sand and the warm water touching your feets...This is what this song is about and no matter how old this trully masterpiece is, everytime that you'll listen to this "you're going to dance", believe me. It just get better and better. The best French House disco filtered song. Mr Bangalter + Mr Diamond + Mr Braxe , what else could you expect from this electronic genious?.

These guys are doing a great job with their music, and Eyeball Records is doing a great job helping these guys get to the top. This album is a great mixture of pop and rock and the riffs will get stuck in your head for days, and it is just the beginning for these guys. Tracks to look for are Cold-Hearted Town, Wire and Stone (video now appearing on fuse and MTVu), and Late Night Television. These guys are just starting to get recognized and respected, and they are a great find for Eyeball, which has given rise to bands such as My Chemical Romance, Thursday, and Murder by Death. We should be expecting more incredible music from these guys as well as Eyeball in the next few years. Awesome music.

5 out of 5 stars nothing in life is free..........2006-05-22

..cuz i had to pay 80p to rent this cd from the library, but hey, i woulda paid twice that amount for this sweet collection. yeahhhh, this is what im talking about, when in need of escape from the monotony of modern cheese, the smell of this mature variety seems to improve with age. i'd be fascinated to know what it feels like to listen to this stuff with the ears of a modern day teenager, but for this 30 something, it feels like the last 20 years never happened. Well done Rhino, more please. Can i go rock my body now?

5 out of 5 stars hey, i'll take it anyway i can get it.................2006-05-16

i will just ignore the previuos guys comments about this cd, for this is the stuff that i've been looking for time and time again! hey, if the original masters weren't available, i'll take a remaster from the vinyl resources any day. some of the cuts i am familiar with, like konk's "it's your life", lime's 'on the grid', and a few others. "hot music may have came out in the 90's, but hey, like i said, i'll take 'em anyway i can get 'em! so if your feeling like you need your 80's dance fix, pick this one up and dance your cool spirits away!!

1 out of 5 stars Vinyl on CD.......2006-05-05

Although it's great to see all of these songs together in a somewhat comprehensive package (except for Pal Joey's 'Hot Music' which has nothing to do with the 80's theme since it's a 90's Acid jazz track).

The main glaring problem with this collection is that it's mostly culled from VINYL recordings, featuring pops and crackles on just about all the songs on this CD.

These are NOT digital masters of the recordings, just someone putting their very used record collection on CD.

I'm shocked that a company of Rhino's stature would release something of this poor quality.

Who's sleeping on the job over at quality control there? Or was that position eliminated?.

Avoid this CD unless you just really want to hear the tunes, no matter what the quality. Great idea, bad execution (a lot of that going around these days).

And to the schelps over at Rhino; you're on notice.

5 out of 5 stars X marks the spot.......2007-01-04

Following the mighty KICK, INXS had a lot to prove and whilst this isn't their strongest album (I would vote "Welcome to wherever you are" for that honour), it does show a band who worked superbly well as a unit and whose songwriting capabilities were incredible.

There's no filler and some of the tracks - especially "The Stairs" and "By My Side" - should be considered classics.

A cracking album, by a band at the top of their form, this is surely an essential purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Should Be a Classic.......2006-01-04

On the heels of Kick one can only imagine the pressure to keep that momentum rolling and as usual INXS more than met the challenge. I stated in another review that although I thought Kick was a decent record, was just a bit too stripped down for my liking. I understood why it was so popular and was very happy to see INXS get the accolades they long deserved but I was hoping for a larger sound. Enter "X". They took everything good about Kick and made the sound larger with great layers of synths and powerful guitar chords.
In my mind INXS has not made a bad record. Very few bands can make that claim. X is a perfect example of a great band on top of the world not sitting on their success and just going through the motions. They made an even better record than the one that made them chart-toppers. From the first few seconds of "Suicide Blonde" I could tell that this was going to be a disc that stays in the car changer for good. This record is overflowing with great melodies, pulsing tempos and outstanding production. It is obvious why Chris Thomas won a Brit award for his work on this record.

Some of the best tunes on this disc are Suicide Blonde, The Stairs, Faith in Each Other, Lately and Who Pays the Price. This remastered cd also has some great unreleased material on them that are the demos that Andrew Fariss recorded of Salvation Jane and Who Pays the Price.

Any fan of the more alternative side of pop/rock can not go wrong with this album. It is a keeper.

5 out of 5 stars inxs at their best.......2005-11-22

I love this album as much as I like their "Kick" album. I usually skip "who pays the price", "I'm on my way" and sometimes "Hear that sound". But overall this is an inspirational album. I have actually kept this cd in my walkman for a whole month and not removed it at all. I myself am a r&b/jazz/dance cat and I grew up listening to all kinds of music. Its unfortunate Michael Hutchence is no longer with us. He was talented and had a great voice. Why didn't he take his own advice and "Live baby Live". That's my only question. I guess his bandmates will do just what he didn't. Press on guys Press on.

4 out of 5 stars X-cellent INXS.......2005-09-24

INXS were coming off a massive high before this album got underway. "Kick" was one of the biggest albums of the year, they had their first American number one single and had polished off a world tour that was successful beyond their wildest dreams. The demands on the band weighed in heavy - everything had to be bigger and more amazing than before. It made "X" an album that couldn't possibly live up to anyone's expectations.

The band was also obviously aware of their position. Many of the songs on "X" sound over-thought out. Only the initial single sounds at all spontaneous, with Charlie Musselwhite's killer harmonica riff elevating "Suicide Blonde" to a classic. And the catchy "doo doo doo" chorus on "Disappear" made that song a worthy single as well. But then the songs begin to lose steam. "Bitter Tears" and "By My Side" hold up the best, but the "Kick" factor is literally not there.

That having been said, "X" is still a very satisfying listen. Had this been that album before "Kick" and after "Listen Like Thieves," I doubt it would get the bad rap it often gets. They explored some funky sounds here ("Bitter Tears" and "Who Pays The Price") that would have also made strong singles. Micael Hutchence is one of rock's all time great frontmen, and I've always been a sucker for Kirk Pengilly's sax riffs. While this would not be my first choice for an INXS purchase, I still recommend "X" to fans of the band's style of rock.

5 out of 5 stars Great INXS CD.......2005-07-28

The remastered version of X is a great CD by the Australian rock band INXS. All of the songs are great, and some seem to express feelings of dissatisfaction and a hope for change. The two best songs here are "Disappear" and "Bitter Tears." Get this CD as soon as you can.
