After a four-year hiatus notable for some film and television soundtrack work, a lapsed contract, and a relaxed songwriting schedule Fountains of Wayne return with their third and best CD to date. The New York-based power-pop quartet delivers a diverse feast of infectious melodies and endlessly clever lyrics. Songwriters Adam Schlesinger and Chris Collingwood still slide on a sweet scale between the Beatles and the Monkees, but they've branched out from '60s sounds to include bona fide alt rock ("Little Red Light," "Bought for a Song"), orchestrated pop ("Halley's Waitress"), a country lark worthy of Dwight Yoakam ("Hung Up On You"), and hints of psychedelia ("Supercollider"). The Cars-flavored "Bright Future in Sales" and "Stacy's Mom" warrant heavy-rotation airplay. Following their acclaimed eponymous debut and the vastly underrated Utopia Parkway, Welcome Interstate Managers leaves no doubt that Fountains of Wayne are gaining strength. --Jeff Shannon
Customer Reviews:
"He was killed in a cellular phone explosion".......2007-06-21
When I heard these words, the first of the first song, I was completely hooked.
It's a great album, full of 1960's-sounding music, but with themes from the 1990's and 2000's. Every song's a winner, with lyrics that stick in your mind.
awesome........2007-05-13
i love this cd. fountains of wayne are more versatile than you'd imagine -- they span everything from country-like rock to punk rock to acoustic. and the lyrics are beautiful, as well. go fountains of wayne!
A little uneven, but there's still some great songs to be found........2007-02-19
WELCOME INTERSTATE MANAGERS opens with a series of clever rhymes (or near rhymes as the acceptable equivalent) in the song "Mexican Wine" a bit of nonsense that sets the tone for this one. From the slacker salesman in "Bright Future in Sales" (Really reminds me of some old Nick Lowe) to the hopeless dreamer trapped in "Hackensack," there are a lot of great characters here. This one even has a hit for a band that deserves it in the form of "Stacy's Mom," a quirky look at teenage lust. But sometimes the songs land flat, like on Halley's Waitress" that stretches the metaphor way too far, "Hung Up On You" with it's forced twang, or "Peace and Love" that could be taken with tongue in cheek or not; it's just too earnest to convince. Then you hear something like "Valley Winter Song" or "Hey Julie" and all is forgiven. This is a band that's just hard not to like.
Fantastic album.......2006-12-20
I was not too impressed on my first listen, but by listen #3 was hooked. The more I've listened to this album, the better it sounds. I initially thought the latter half of the album would have been better left off, but how wrong I was. Even the country song (#11) has a strong pop melody to it, and I am definitely NOT a fan of country music in general. The only songs I'm not crazy about are Fire Island and Peace and Love (#s 12 and 13). All the songs (even those 2) will stick in your head -- Fountains of Wayne are definitely experts at crafting a good pop song. There are so many great songs on here that it's hard to pick favorites, but Mexican Wine, Hackensack, Valley Winter Song, and Supercollider (#s 1,4,6,& 15) are definitely on my favorite list, as is Stacy's Mom. I am a 49-year-old woman and had some reservations about the lyrics of the latter song (it doesn't seem like something a grown woman should be listening to or singing!), but the music is so nearly perfect that I purchased it despite those reservations, and I'm very glad I did. This album is probably the best music purchase I've made in years and is sure to be enjoyed by Baby Boomers who miss the good pop songs of the 60s, 70s and 80s.
Their best to date!.......2006-10-16
This is so far the best CD from Fountains of Wayne. It's filled with so many strongs songs. Some of my favorites include "Bright future in sales" and "Hey Julie". One of my all-time favorite lyrics is from the song "No Better Place":
"And the bourbon sits inside me
Right now I'm a puppet in its sway
And it may be the whiskey talking
But the whiskey says I miss you every day"
I had the pleasure of seeing FOW and a small club in Atlanta, Ga called Smith's Ole Bar. I was tickled that with all the volume coming from that stage, the vocal performance was very "subdued" and it occured to me that the true star on that stage was the lyrics of each song.

An earthy, refreshingly straightahead U.S. answer to Britain's Durutti Column, this quartet serves up a dozen guitar-based alternative rock instrumentals on its Geffen debut. With organ, piano, and guitar trading lead roles, "Nothing Lies Still for Long," "Anna Karina," and "Vegetable Kingdom" (the lone track with a vocal, albeit a backwards one) are entrancing. --Jeff Bateman
Customer Reviews:
Great Thinking/Driving/Chilling Music.......2007-06-21
Interstate is my all time favorite driving music CD (cleverly named, eh?). Although I am a fan of many of the guitar heroes (satriani, beck, etc) this album has no pyrotechnics at all, just solid, well played melodies and grooves. Sometimes some interesting "art of noise" stuff thrown in for good measure, but always in good measure.
Definitely recommended - unfortunately none of the other CDs in the Pell Mell catalog have the same feel as this CD. I bought "Star City" and "Flow"
Top Ten 90s Album.......2004-06-11
Pell Mell are one of the great instrumental groups...maybe ever. They craft exquisitely beautiful, at times tears-inducing, melodic/rhythmic instrumental pieces unlike anything else I've heard. Let me qualify that. Yes, you might hear similarities to others, but only in the most superficial ways--ie, they too use keys, guitar, bass and drums. What sets Pell Mell apart is that each individual has an incredibly strong instrumental "voice" that comes through on every recording. This is not a "jam band", but 4 like minds who somehow cohere around these fragile, spare, then driving and powerful, mini-masterpieces. And speaking of masterpieces, this is it: Interstate, one of the most inspired, inspiring, driving pieces of instrumental rock music ever recorded. 9.75 out of 10.

A fool and his money are soon parted.......2006-10-25
If you're even considering buying this EP, you are most likely a die-hard Modest Mouse fan. If you are a die-hard Modest Mouse fan, you most likely own the "Building Nothing Out of Something" compilation of rare tracks.
All but one of the four once unreleased studio tracks on this EP are included on "Building Nothing Out of Something". The remaining studio track, "Edit the Sad Parts", is decent, but nothing to get excited over. The same can be said of "Buttons to Push The Buttons", the only other Modest Mouse song that can only be found here...though the sound quality is worse.
There you have it. Assuming you own that complation (which you can get very cheaply and easily anywhere online), you would be an idiot to spend anywhere between $70 and $100 for this EP, which are the asking prices here.
Think of all the other music you could buy with that ammount of money.
"... sometimes I'm angry that I feel so angry...".......2005-06-20
What can you say? "Edit The Sad Parts" may be the best thing this band ever wrote.
"Interstate 8" is all the tracks that The Mouse could not fit onto "This Is A Long Drive For Someone With Nothing To Think About." They even reprise the album version of "Tundra/Desert": a deserved fan favorite: grimy, wailing disco rock as infectious as The Black Plague...
Oh, and to all those who jumped on the bandwagon with "Moon & Antarctica" or "Good News For People..." don't ever cap this band's lo-fi sound. It's what gave them their backing in the first place. "Man, the production's terrible." No, it's just cost effective. And all of us REAL FANS of this group realize that "This Is A Long Drive..." "The Lonesome Crowded West" and this EP are what really makes up this band. This band's SOUL is in these specific choices.
Not that their later stuff is bad, in fact I enjoy it. It's just that Epic made the Mouse shave his five o' clock shadow. All that beard stubble and imperfect perfection can be found on "Interstate 8." The title track is one of THE QUINTESSENTIAL summer songs, so now's a good time to start spinning it: lounging on the beach, driving that long two-lane, or trying to calm down and catch your breath with your lover just minutes before dawn's early light...
Watch out for the 5 demos that conclude the disc. "Buttons To Push The Buttons" (track 7) is a personal favorite of mine, Isaac bending his damn whammy-bar to the point of snapping, and Eric Judy's walking bass line that makes you wanna look sideways at someone and say, "I'm cool just for listening to this."
I had no idea this thing was so scarce and worth so much. I might contemplate auctioning it once the demand rises a little bit more. Ah, who am I kidding, this EP is a big piece of my college past. You can put a price on Polaroids, but you can't assign monetary worth to your memories. For me, this disc is better than a time-machine.
Oh, and if you're wondering if buying this rarity is worth the $80 price tag...? *nod head very slowly*
icing on the cake.......2003-11-07
the best. all of the greatest hits on one record. very instrumental and very delightful. the guitar riffs make me wanna space out for hours and his i love it. i love this CD. i want to hear more and more modest mouse constantly. we need more com cds tho.
Interstate 8.......2003-10-20
This was the disc that got me into Modest Mouse. I didn't know at all what to expect, and after hearing this, their other albums disappointed me a little (just a little; the band is one of my favorites).
The songs on here are some of MM's laziest and most atmospheric, with intense, but not overdone, emotions. If you've ever lived in the Pacific Northwest you will identify with this music. The title track is the perfect song for staring out your window into a rain-soaked afternoon; "Sleepwalking" is probably the happiest Isaac's ever sounded (though, as the title suggests, he may just be sleepy). "Edit the Sad Parts" is an anthem for every gloomy, depressed teenager. The other songs are jumpy and funny, and all excellent.
Of course, the real prize here is that you don't just get the five songs listed on the CD case - after about two minutes of silence, you get another string of half a dozen tracks, most of which are live recordings of songs from "This is a Long Drive for Someone with Nothing to Think About", MM's first full-length album.
If you manage to find this, buy it; this is the best way to get into a really amazing band.
MM's best.......2002-03-09
Modest Mouse at it's best: raw, crazy, and unbridled. Not too produced, it gives a really cool sound to it, and gives you a mental image of what it'd be like to see them live. Some songs are performed live and are crazy. I beleive it's out of print, but if you ever stumble across it, snatch it.

Customer Reviews:
If you are reading this, trust me, go out and buy this album.......2005-07-14
2 guys from little known indie bands in Melbourne, get together, write and play a concept album dedicated to an event which most likely occurred before either of them were born and create what in my eyes was one of the top 5 albums of 2004. Increadibly lush soundscapes, great riffs and poignant lyrics almost elevate you to 1969 as the house of innocence and love that was 1969 starts to crumble at its foundations.
The opening track 'The Summer of Love' invites you into the dreamy psychedelic era and before you know it, you are locked into a mesmerising chronology of the days events which get heavier and heavier by each song. Highlights are It's ok (it is not ok) with the catchiest opening riff of the year and the powerful awakening of 1970, the stark reminder of the hangover that was the 1960's and the horror of lost innocence about to unfold.
Amazing stuff
Fantastic hard trippy rock.......2005-06-08
These guys are a fantastic two piece from Melbourne, Australia. The album is a concept album regarding the events surrounding the Rolling Stones gig at Altamont, San Fransisco December 6th 1969. It includes sound bytes from the era to tie the songs together. It is dedicated to Jerry Garcia and features a cover of the Dead song New Speedway Boogie.
There is some great trippy guitar work on this album, fantastic to listen to through head phones. The album has a nice heavy feel even though a lot of it is acoustic. Some (OK most) parts of the album you actually feel like you're there, watching the Stones play as events unfold.
Great stuff
Customer Reviews:
For its purposes, a very good and peaceful album.......2005-03-24
I am a professional in the holistic healing arts and a musician both, and a former editor of Heartsong Review magazine, so, um, trust me, I have heard good and baaaaad New Age music. This is specifically a CD designed to induce states of consciousness, and it is very successful at that. Specifically, for inducing sleep and/or deep restfulness. It uses deep slow binaural beats to entrain your brainwaves to a peaceful and hemispherically balanced state, and if you want to learn more about it find the Monroe Institute's website and research it.
As far as music goes, its pleasant and deeply spacious, slowly flowing new age music - deep slow synthesizer washes as its called, and underlying falling rain sounds on the second of the two cuts on the album. Its well produced and recorded. I enjoy listening to it, and it makes me breathe deeper, or fall asleep if needed. There is LOTS of really bad new age air pudding out there that I would not call musically successful, but this is really excellent for what it is. I would recommend it for sleep, meditation, relaxation, reducing hypertension, calming your baby down, yoga, making a peaceful sacred space along with candles (DO keep them in specifically designed aka tempered votive holders as you may fall asleep and having a solo standing candle burn down to your table top turns your table into a giant candle and perhaps your house...), etc...
OK, my review should say, I can really feel the effects of this CD, I put it in my Top Ten of psychoacoustic albums! So get it already! Wholeheartedly recommended. Don't see one for sale here on Amazon, hmm. Well, you can't have mine! Cheers!

The Baron of Country Music's burly baritone was forceful enough to rattle your walls yet agile enough to scale them. Dick Curless is best remembered for his pulsating trucker hits, many of which are included here, but it's his incredible versatility that raises him to the next level. Classic blues, rich ballads, and pop standards all found a way into his repertoire, and each style showcased a different aspect of Curless's voice, which possessed a rare blend of girth, nuance, and dexterity. If that wasn't enough to make you take notice, his delivery was effortless, relaxed, and graceful. --Marc Greilsamer
Customer Reviews:
Great one disc overview of Dick Curless' career.......2004-12-16
If you're looking for the best single disc overview of Dick Curless' career (up until the mid-70s, that is), this is the only one you need to consider. This disc is nearly evenly split between the classic early recordings for Tower Records and the early 70s hits for Capitol Records. No other single disc that I'm aware of is this comprehensive for his career. In fact, this may be the only CD that ever managed to pull together tracks from both of these record labels in one place.
Curless had a deep baritone which, while sounding timeless, was actually quite a rarity among country singers. While he sometimes sounded a bit like Johnny Cash in places (Travelin' Man) and a bit like Jerry Reed in other places (Loser's Cocktail), he ultimately had his own unique style. This is well illustrated in a minor hit buried in this CD called "Bury the Bottle With Me" where his voice colors the weariness of a life that ended with drinking (in song, that is). It's hard to imagine another singer doing justice to this song after hearing Curless do it.
Unfortunately, this CD appears to have gone out of print, so pick up a copy whenever it becomes available. And after digesting this CD, you just might find yourself seriously considering one of those expensive (but extremely comprehensive) Bear Family box sets.
Sings blues like no other, especially with the voice range........1999-02-26
Only place I could find his music. Have followed Dick for many years in the Navy and since his death could not find any of his music even in the state of Maine. I bought one here and received it in about three days. Since then I have ordered 2 more for people that heard for the first time and loved his voice. Thanks for the internet.
WOW!!!.......1998-10-17
One of the greatest, most entertaining artist ever recorded. A must for a lover of good music.
