5 out of 5 stars Great new format, Live.......2002-05-14

This album captures the new sound of LTJ, the beats are funky to start and seamlessly work up to a classic cerebral-driving sound that we have come to love from our friends at good looking. I like how they have captured the more up-tempo sound of what they actually play live on this album, it really shows the dynamic of a live Bukem & Conrad performance of which I have been to many. Then there is the instrumental which is basically the same thing set up in the studio without conrad. It goes to show you how bukem is a machine, he sounds the same in the studio or live, even after a few spliffs. Conrad's flow is less rapping and more chanting, a distinction that is lost on most people who review these albums. The chant is a totally different type of vocalism, and it has more to do with precussion along with the beat than it does with lyrics, but since Conrad is so skilled lyrically, it adds a whole mind-blowing dynamic to the dance experience. I guess you have to come at it from the drum and bass roots rather than the hip-hop to fully appreciate it.

5 out of 5 stars Anything from Good Looking Records........2002-04-02

This album is recommended. LTJ Bukem has been out since a long time continuing to produce one of the best DNB albums and compilations out there.

5 out of 5 stars You've got nothing if you don't have options.......2001-11-12

This is a great live album. Both LTJ and MC Conrad blend music and vocals seamlessly. As usual, the energy is high without being distracting. The mixes are smooth and well balanced. If you just want to listen to the music, play the other CD and worry no more. I think MC Conrad adds a certain dash and smartness to the mix but it's nice to have choices. Like my daddy said "The secret to life is having options."

4 out of 5 stars Excellent - Despite the rambling vocals.......2001-11-04

I liked LTJ's music alot but MC Conrad's "rapping" got to be a bit annoying after a while. Fortuneatly, Conrad's routine does'nt overshadow the great sounding music.

4 out of 5 stars phat, but haven`t we heard it before??.......2001-10-16

With Progression Sessions Vol. 6, LTJ Bukem once again steps up, delivering precision beats and basslines enveloped in swirling atmospherics. The combination, when done right, can be a potent one; however, the question remains...haven`t we heard it before?
Let me say that I am a huge fan of Good Looking, Looking Good, 720 Degrees, Nexus, etc. The music manages to be both energizing and relaxing, a sublime contrast. Even through the countless titles released over the years, the music can still sound fresh, with newer producers such as Makoto and J-Laze exploring new dimensions of sound and incorporating new influences.
The music contained within Vol. 6 is no different- from deep to funky and usually a combination of both, it remains consistent with and even further solidifies GLR`s reputation. The quality of tracks is not the issue that I personally have with this release. I just feel a bit cheated.
For starters, there is not a great spectrum of artists represented. Therefore, the set contains diversity tempered by similar sounding tracks. For example, Makoto always keeps things jazzy and Nookie always keeps things a little on the harder side; there is precious little space in between. The main issue I have, though, is the fact that certain track on Vol. 6 have been realeased previously, on the lackluster Logical Progression Vol. 4. I know that Vol. 6 is a live set, and as such Bukem will blend material both old and new, but to pay 2,400 yen to listen to tracks I already have on a previous release seems a little, well, cheap.
Aside from this caveat, however, Conrad sounds nice (even if he does use recycled rhymes; `can I get a vote from the good vibe commitee` being a contender for the most overused, lamest sounding line this side of `bout it, bout it`). Bukem is, as ever, the consummate DJ, blending the tracks perfectly and releasing the music`s energy while still allowing it space to breathe.
In conclusion, I would have given this collection 5 stars, if not for the issues mentioned above. These are, I feel, relevant, especially to the avid fan of Bukem etc; however, this does not mean that I will stop buying new GLR material on sight. Just a suggestion for Bukem and crew, however...perhaps placing the tracklisting of the album on the outside of the case would allow us, the consumers, to have an idea of what we`re getting into before we purchase your product.

5 out of 5 stars This CD is A Cosmic Headrush.......2006-10-17

Okay okay...check it out. Here's LTJ Bukem showcasing some of the GoodLooking record label's best artists and their best songs to date. I can see where some of these other reviews are coming from based on that fact that this cd in no way compares to the styles presented in previous progression sessions whatsoever. But....It does however take on a formless shape, constantly moving through the worlds of funk, jazz, house, roaring Drum n' Bass beats and atmospheric bliss. I love this CD. Love it. And you will too. If your willing to accept that LTJ Bukem is truly "progressing" and moving on to mutate this style he's created into an amazing new direction, while still keeping original elements from his earlier works. Be on the look out for the back end of this record. Songs 9 thru 14 have sent me to the chiropractor more than enough times.

1 out of 5 stars Weak. .......2005-03-03

What has happened to LTJ Bukem? He used to be the DJ pushing the atmospheric drum & bass sound, with releases like Logical Progression, Earth and Progression Sessions. Now he has gone down the 'liquid funk' route, apparently forgetting that it was atmospheric drum & bass, the whole 'logical' sound that made him famous in the first place; that made him stand out from the crowd. I don't even know why he bothers touring, as he no longer has a signature sound. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate liquid funk. It's just that I expect Bukem to stick to the sound that made him famous and not jump on the liquid funk bandwagon, which I feel he has done in the past couple of years. Even as a mix of mainly liquid funk drum & bass, Progression Sessions 10 isn't that good. What exactly is LTJ Bukem `progressing'? The term has become meaningless, as he has given the logical sound up! The only stand out tracks from the CD are MC Conrad & Makoto's 'Golden Girl' and Makoto's 'Promise', but there is precious little beyond that. And what has happened to all the Good Looking artists that we loved? PFM? Intersperse? J Laze? Rantoul? Future Engineers? Intense? Vice Versa? Nookie? Bukem, what was the point of building the logical sound over all those years if you were just going to throw it all away? People, if you're looking for vintage Bukem, you won't find it here, rather you'll get Bukem trying to be a Fabio clone. Bukem is no longer Bukem, and it's a crying shame.

5 out of 5 stars They did it again!.......2005-02-18

I was beginning to wonder what was going with the "progression sessions series". Then Ltj Bukem and Mc Conrad did it again! After the first 6 sessions, I was highly disappointed with 7,8 and 9. I did not even buy them(I have almost all of Glo record's albums)cause I was not "feeling" the music. I do agree with one of the reviewers, Mc Conrad is not as fresh as back in the days although Ltj Bukem is still doing his thing. I can compare this session with PS 3 and 4 which are the best(in my opinion). It is one of those cds you can get on the treadmill and run forever. I hope for more sessions in the future and please someone let Mr. Bukem know to bring back DRS. Both MCs are lethal together on any project that Mr. Bukem puts out. You guys know what I am talking about!

4 out of 5 stars Good mix, but lacking something...........2005-02-11

LTJ Bukem: Progression sessions 10 - Cd review

Well, I'm a big fan of Bukem and Conrad so I was really excited for this cd. It's live in Germany and it was released about a month ago. This first thing I notice is that there is no opening tune. After introductions the mix cuts in midset, and midsong. To me a mix is like a good book, there should be some sort of opening and if you have the time some sort of closing. The track markers start when the second record starts playing, not when the actual mix occurs. I know many local Dj's do the same thing to showcase their mixing I think that's cool, but I don't understand why LTJ did it this way.
For the most part the cd is tight. If you know LTJ that you know what to expect, hot tunes if you dig the good looking melodic, kinda liquid sound. His mixing to me has always been good yet somewhat boring. When he is on, he is on, but LTJ gets lazy a few times here.
Highlights for me include: Golden Girl by Mc Conrad and Makoto. Great tune, but it is unnecessary to hear Conrad mc over himself. Of course he calls for a rewind on his own tune...Lame... That's another problem with this mix, too many rewinds. Maybe it works well live, but does the third track deserve a rewind on the mix? How about building the set up to the point that the crowd demands a rewind not just because it's a hot tune...There are 2 or 3 rewinds on this cd which I find annoying.
MC Conrad is my favorite MC next to Armani, I think. I have always enjoyed his flow and lyrics but he is not at his best here. His timing is off once or twice and it is noticeable. His lyrics have also suffered as of late, I miss the days when he would be all like "backs up against the wall we set the pace, progression sessions 5 is live, drum and bass.".... Nice.... He is still the man, just not as tight as in the past.
Other highlights include shootout by Ill logic and Raf. Cool tune. Also the mathematics vs. tactile tune `rub a dub' is my favorite on the mix. Those guys are just fantastic.

If you like LTJ, you will likely dig this mix, but it's a long way from the first 5 progression sessions, which in my opinion are fantastic. My biggest problem with this mix is that the flow that I usually associate with BUKEM is not there. Too many rewinds and no PROGESSION of tempo and intensity, which to me is essential. In the end, if you like BUKEM I do recommend this cd. :) Thank for reading this, I know it's long.

5 out of 5 stars Florecent, crisp, concrete, drizzle, soul.......2004-12-06

So, it's 8pm on a crisp, rainy tuesday evenning. You just got back from a crowded commute on the trains and buses. You need a smooth CD to relax to. This is your CD!

This one is perfect for those spontaneous evenings of CHILL. Selecta LTJ has managed once again to put together (perfectly) a deep, soulful mix, that blends perfectly with the sounds of rain and car horns comming from an open window near you. Seen.

Track 3 by (my fav japanese musical talent) Makoto with Conrad is probably my favourite, but there are plenty others on here that are sure to stimulate that section in your brain you always forget you had.

My only negetive is: MC Conrad is not at all bad, but he has been on way too many of this series (Progression Sessions). I REALLY enjoyed ProgSess9 which featured Deeizm for a change. Conrad is great, but maybey he should pass the mike more often. CD2 ofcoarse makes up for this.

Another champion sound selcted by the champion LTJ Bukem.

4 out of 5 stars Bukem and Conrad back again.......2002-11-13

Once again the Good Looking crew has added on to the Progression Sessions series of discs, this being the seventh in the series. Just like Volume 6, Bukem decided to use a live set for the album, this time Tokyo's Liquid Room becomes the stage for Bukem and Conrad's unique blend vocals and drum and bass.

Bukem seems to have dropped the deeper d&b sounds from past Progression Sessions in favor of the jazzier and melodic tempos of Greenfly's G-Funk, Greg Packer, Kymera, and Makoto. This album also features Bukem's remix of Herbie Hancock's The Essence, in addition to a reworking of the classic PFM track The Western which Conrad dubs "The Old-Skool Brand-Nu" If you like jazzier drum and bass, or Bukem/Conrad in general pick it up already.
