    Here are a young Israeli clarinetist, an English orchestra, and what sounds like a German conductor (the booklet gives no information about the performers) playing American jazz as if to the manner born. Sharon Kam has proved in concert performances of classical music that she is a virtuoso with a strong musical personality. Here, she proves that, in addition to having complete mastery of her instrument and all its resources, she also has an uncanny ability to identify with the styles and idioms of her adopted country. Only in Gershwin's "Summertime" do the jazzy inflections and liberties sound artificial; otherwise, she produces just the right kind of vibrato, sliding, rhythmic flexibility, and expression. Her tone is full of variety and beautiful over a huge range; even at the top--and she goes up to a high B-flat--it does not sound shrill; her facility and security are fabulous. Copland's Concerto, written for Benny Goodman, is very tonal, chordal, and simple, though the second part is brilliant and rather dissonant. In the first of Bernstein's three pieces, the solo melts into the band; the others are perhaps the wildest, most raucous music on the program. Morton Gould's "Derivations" come as a relief: mild, pleasant, and singing, they let the soloist engage in conversation with members of the band, and finally become more driving. Artie Shaw clearly wrote his Concerto for himself, and Kam plays it to the hilt for technical and tonal virtuosity. The arrangements of Gershwin's famous songs demonstrate the vocal quality of the clarinet. The orchestra, from which the various band combinations are extracted, matches Kam's style admirably. --Edith Eisler

    This is such a delightful disc, you never will tire of playing it. The Shaw Concerto alone is worth the price of the CD. I own the movie for which Shaw wrote the piece (Second Chorus) and it is much more enjoyable just listening to this CD than watching shots of the actors during Shaw's fine playing. The Copland, Gershwin, Gould, Bernstein -all fresh approaches and lovely listening. This was my first CD of Ms. Kam's and I will now search Amazon for other recordings of hers.

        Me parece que el arte vocal de Kiri posee muchas fortalezas y sòlidos atributos: brillantez, claridad, riqueza de colores, excelente fraseo, perfecta colocación y afinación, expresividad. Sin embargo, también carece de una mejor respiración para poder contrarrestar el excesivo vibrato que aplica a su canto. Sobre algunas de las obras interpretadas, recomiendo: Der Rosenkavalier: Schwarzkopf; Wagner: Kirsten Flagstad.

            They're both brilliant violinists but in very different genres, and Menuhin by his own admission never learned to improvise (unlike many of today's classical performers): he was trained in the post-Liszt, pre-jazz window when improvisation had died out in classical music and even cadenzas followed the score strictly (if Beethoven didn't write one, play Kreisler's). And it shows, rather painfully. He achieves a brilliant tone but that's about it: he plays these Broadway tunes completely "straight", and any student could do that equally well.

            The CD is worthwhile for its curiosity value, but you'd get much better musical value buying Grappelli's jazz and Menuhin's classical recordings separately.

            Music just does not get any better than this CD! I am a musician and hearing these two artists is a thrill. This is a CD for all music lovers. You will not be sorry if you purchase this CD

            You simply can't go wrong with a combination of two of the most talented violinists of our time. This cd is a wonderful showcase for them both and the choice of music is the greatest classics. It's a fun, winner of a cd.
