It's the best techno you've ever heard..........2007-05-29
This is one of the most amazing CD's I've ever owned (3 seperate times). It says a lot when I can say that I've purchased this CD several times (just purchased it the 3rd time) and would do it over again if it happens to disappear. My first was stolen as was the second and since it's been out of print for some time now I couldn't wait to get my hands on it. Can't wait for it to get to my doorstep. Buy this no matter what you do.
Moo........2006-03-21
So everyone I have ever had listen to this CD loves it. I have even had to find copies of it for friends that don't have the mad skills to hunt down obscure copies of the good stuff. This album is amazing. If you can find it, buy it.
Open the door, sit in the seat, turn the key and go.
Brings Back Good Memories!.......2004-08-09
I was waist deep into the "rave"/techno scene in the early 90's and this album is one of the definitive collections of this time. The album kinda came out a little after this style was very worn, but the collection includes all the big Messiah 12" vinyls that made them great (you'll all remember "Temple of Dreams" with the "Did I dream, you dreamed about me.." sample taken from This Mortal Coil).
Unfortunately, this was Messiah's greatest moment. This albums is tons of fun with lots of great sampling and energy. They tended to border the rave sound with the industrial side of things, but after this album I think they may have had one or two more that were simply dreadful then faded away...oh well..we have this classic CD.
OH, and another classic, but VERY hard to find CD is ALTERN-8: Full On: Mask Hysteria..awesome...
The original.......2004-01-18
Back in the mid-90's, I was into grunge rock and industrial, but not techno (that's what we called it back then). To that point, all of the techno I had heard was mostly house stuff, which to me sounded repetitive, unimaginative, and boring. But an eclectic friend of mine returning from Japan excitedly recommended this Messiah disc that he had picked up there. After just the first listen, I was hooked. I had never heard this style of pumping, driving beats and inspired melodic samples before (other people's description of "hardcore techno" is quite apt, I think, it sounds loud and *fast*), and it was never far from my stereo for the next few years. THIS is the album that turned me into a techno (and now "electronica") fan.
I wish I still had a copy of this (it was stolen a few years ago). It would be interesting to see if it sounds dated now, as techno tends to get dated, but I have a feeling that it still holds a lot of value. For someone relatively new to electronica, you might be more interested in the newer stuff out there, but for genre enthusiasts I think it's worth picking up a copy if you get a chance.
Another reviewer mentioned a relationship to Lords of Acid (another pioneering techno group in the early-mid 90's). I didn't know about that, but now that I think about it, I can remember similarities in the sound. Also, Utah Saints comes to mind as another group having a similar sound at about the same time. And I think you may find that earlier The Prodigy work is the stylistic missing link between these groups and more recent breakbeat groups like The Chemical Brothers, The Crystal Method, and later Prodigy stuff.
I feel love.......2004-01-08
I was digging around my cd collection looking for something to throw in my discman while I hit the treadmill in my apartment. I came across Messiah's "21st Century Jesus". I haven't listened to this cd in ages. I forgot just how good it is. I remember the first time I was exposed to Messiah, it was the song "Thunderdome". I first heard it from a college buddy of mine when I lived in Milwaukee, WI. We just loved cranking up the song before hitting our favorite nightclub on Saturday nights. The rest of the cd is just as good with its mixture of hardcore techno beats and melodic vocals. If I stand corrected, Messiah is a side project for one of the members of Lords of Acid. Other than "Thunderdome", I also adore "I Feel Love" which basically is sampled from the Donna Summers' disco classic of the same name. "Peace and Tranquility" is another terrific track. It is a good blend of hardcore techno beats with melodies of house music. For fans of hardcore techno, "21st Century Jesus" is a definite must have for their collection.

Customer Reviews:
Probably the best break beat ever wrote.......2003-03-26
I bought this CD back in the early/mid 90s when I would randomly buy dance CDs when online review sites didn't exist. And this is one of the few CDs I purchased that I actually enjoyed. It features some of the best break beat techno of the 90s and doesn't resort to the mind numbing (and not innovative) thump-thump-thump bass/drums like most techno. Almost every song has a little voice intro that suits the song well. Despite what some other reviewers say, this cd isn't actually "original" songs. Almost every song is remakes or clips from 70sn disco or rock songs such as the imfamous "escuse me while I kiss the sky" sped up and used in a chorus. These clips are mixed in so well that unless you heard the original disco/rock song, you'd never even know it was a borrowed sample. For those that do listen to 70s dicso, this disk is a real treat as now you get harder, faster and catchier versions of some of the dance classics you love.
If you only own one techno album.......2003-01-17
There's not much I know about Messiah, whether it's a "band" or a "project" or a one-man band with many contributors, or whatever... But I do know that this is the album that pretty much introduced me to techno and at the same time showed me that it could be more than just a drum machine. Though the album does have original music, it is predominantly a serious of songs comprised of perfectly chosen and arranged samples. So many, in fact, you forget that they are samples until after the 1000th time you've listened to the disc. It certainly qualifies as a "rave" disc, considering the year in which it was originally released. It is fast-paced and seamless with no breaks in the tracks, but not so fast that you would wonder why you would even bother trying to start to dance. Richard's Dawson's voice sampled from the Running Man in "Temple of Dreams" is the standout track, psyching you up for the action as soon as he declares it's time to start running, while a rare Cocteau Twins sample in the break allows you to catch you breath. Ian Astbury makes a full guest vocal appearance in "Creator", presumably cause the Cult was demoing with Rick Rubin (executive producer) around the same time. But Ian grabs the song by the horns and makes it his own, except for the chorus provided by sampling LL. How influential is this album? To this date, I cannot start a fire in my basement wood stove without clips from "Peace and Tranquilty popping into my head: "The violet flame begins to surround you." The other standout track is "Thunderdome", with samples from Mad Max going beyond the same. This album is a masterpiece and hopefully will be in print again someday.
Open the Door, Sit in the Seat, Turn the Key and Go!.......2002-10-07
From the prophetic, post-apocalyptic narrative that kicks off this album, to the faster-than-light "hidden" track that suddenly appears after three minutes of silence on track ten, Twenty First Century Jesus is the ultimate in frenetic techno/rave music from one artist. This CD was one of the first in my now 200+ Techno collection. I still listen to it more than any other CD I have; it's like spending time with a best friend. The vocal samples help propel the slammin' beats, from Richard "Who do you love?" Dawson in "Running Man" to some "Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome" clips. Not enough can be said for the entrancing euphoria felt every time I give a listen to this better-than-perfect Techno album. Bottom line: it's like taking audiotory amphetamines--the best cure for sleep.
This album is my little Temple of Dreams!!!.......2002-03-25
It's a good job that CDs are more durable than tapes or records because, by now, I wouldn't be able to listen to my ten-year-old copy of "21st Century Jesus." I loved Messiah when they first started releasing records in the UK and this album is a showcase of their finest tracks. "Temple of Dreams" and "Thunderdome" are my favourite songs ever and, even though they are more than a decade old now, they still wouldn't sound out of place if released today. "There Is No Law" and "I Feel Love" are also wonderful, wonderful tracks and one of the best examples of early Nineties hardcore rave you could ever find. You can feel the energy of this album as soon as you start listening to it and there is not a weakness to it from start to finish. If you are a fan of dance music then, trust me, you will love this album. It's well worth a listen, I can assure you!
Hey Cult fans!!! Check out this Ian Astbury side project!.......2002-03-15
Listen to track #6 Creator to hear Astbury sing on this Album and he also introduces track #2 (unfortunately you can't hear it except for one word in the sample) This album is a great old rave album from when rave first started becoming poplular in NY. If you enjoy electronica with a large sampling and/or if you're a fan of the cult pick this album up. PLUS --- Have you ever heard Donna Summer's ultra boring I feel love!? Ian takes this song, speeds it up and adds a beat to it. Even if you're not a techno or electronica fan (like myself) you should really enjoy this album.
