Reissuing old dance records can be dicey, because so many of them don't age well. There are exceptions, of course, like this digitally spiffed up and beautifully packaged, 3-disc Renaissance collection from Sasha and John Digweed. Released originally in 1994, it's become a milestone representing not only the celebrated duo's first recorded mix but also a snapshot of British dance at its raving, glorious peak. Disc 1 opens with a triplet of Leftfield's "Song for Life" and moves through still-potent tracks from Disco Evangelists ("De Niro") and F. Machine ("Child Bride"). The run continues on discs 2 and 3, as it lightly glides through Fluke's "Slide" and EMF's "They're Here." And what would a trip down amnesia lane be without a stop at Moby's "Go"? Nostalgia only goes so far, and some songs that sounded great at the time are a little soft now (see "Not Over Yet"). But that innocence gets at the heart of the collection's appeal, reminding us of when dance music seemed primed to take over the planet. -Matthew Cooke

Yikes...Cheers to Electronica's Evolution.......2007-06-05
If you recognize the tracks by name and have a strong sense of nostalgia or you are a newcomer and are curious about what electronica sounded like in the early 90's then it may be worth your greenbacks. Otherwise save your pennies on this Renaissance novelty.
Three discs featuring very poorly aged tracks encompassing various genres during their early (but continual) evolution.
I try to stay clear of accusing DJ's (that I also consider artists) of in your face commercialism, but this compilation has me changing my tune slightly. Re-releasing a compilation from 1994 in 2005 seems like an easy way to sucker a few people into buying an old collection of severely outdated tracks. Apparently the market was there as the original release was selling for up to $400 as a collector's item.
If you are curious about the history of electronica, and more specificly, Sasha and Digweed's early (possible their first) commercial release then you may be satified with this three disc set. Otherwise there are much better "Mix Collections" out there that document electronica's evolution.
Disc 1 and 2 get 2/5 stars while disc 3 gets 3/5 stars (just for the fact that it doesn't have multiple re-mixes of the same track on it like discs 1 and 2 do).
The Renaissance Men.......2007-01-13
Celebratory and expansive, house music (especially during its infancy) was never meant to be taken too seriously. It was (and still is) the musical embodiment of a very specific mood. It is fueled by adrenaline and charged by neural sparks of creativity that can be both feral and robotic. Like all mediums, its growing pains were sometimes evidenced by awkward (and incredibly embarassing) moments (see The Best of House series for a few good examples of these), but there were also shining moments of brilliance, like this three-disc set.
I disagree that this mix should be highly rated if for no other reason than because of its place in house history (unlike cars or stamps, the value of music rarely increases along with its age). However, I will say that many of these twelve-year-old cuts aren't just a testament to the leaps and bounds that house music made during its genesis (thanks in no small part to Sasha & Digweed), but some of them are still very relevant as markers of fine craftsmanship, especially in a genre that is threatened every year with death by dull monotony. This album -- one of the first of its kind to go gold, and single-handedly ensuring the fame of Sasha and Digweed as house music's most trusted ambassadors -- is everything that good club music still wants to be.
Okay, well, not everything. Even the Almighty S & D aren't immune to a little dating. Each of the three discs has patchy moments where the music misfires ("Tranceillusion"), skids on atonal redundancy ("House Stompin'"), or is just plain annoying ("Bombscare"). And for listeners familiar with S & D's latest oeuvre, some of the tunes will definitely sound a mite-bit backward. This is to be expected when you're listening to house music that's over a decade old.
But what's a pleasant surprise are the caramel-smooth progressions and transitions (the "Song For Life" trilogy), the skittery electro-tangles ("Slid"), and the ecstatic, round-house power hits ("Sublime"). Although the discs contain their fair share of crumbling, poorly-aged retro-rhythms, these weak spots are obscured by the lush vibrancy of the rest of the albums.
Sasha and Digweed may have come a long way since 1994, but that doesn't mean their starting point was necessarily a bad place. It had its flaws, its cracks and gaudy mouldings, but -- as this set proves -- their point of origin wasn't something embarrasing which they have since left behind. It was a solid bedrock, a great wide launching pad, that they continue to reinvent in newer and better ways. Fans of the genre and of the artists should buy this album to rediscover the classics that goaded the music into loftier realms; newcomers should buy this album to learn just how timeless even this most modern of musics can still be.
Essential..........2006-10-21
Techno and the whole electronica scene has certainly splintered from its early days with genre after genre and label after label being attached to its many forms and sounds. But it all starts here, really. It was this mix, this year, this scene that blazed the trail for the rise of techno as, dare I say it, popular. Oh, sure, there was techno prior to this but not in a format for mass consumption. It was mostly an "insider" thing with a few hints in the marketplace that it was coming as all scenes do when they hit critical mass.
I was a latecomer to the whole thing having dabbled in some Eon in the early 90s and beginning listening to Moby sometime circa 1994, about the same time as this was released. I first heard John Digweed when I stumbled across his Global Underground Los Angeles mix in 1999. Consuming everything GU I would eventually stumble across this, purchasing a copy from the UK for a pretty penny.
This mix captures a snapshot in time. The opening three tracks with the various remixes of Leftfield instantly set the tone that something special is happening. With singing divas, remixes of artists who are now fairly well known, Moby being one of them, these mixes capture a moment in time, an era, the re-emergence of dance music.
From time to time I will pull this out to listen to it, hoping it doesn't sound cheesy, dated and ridiculous. It never really does. At worst it is sentimental. Though it does show its age (especially some of the diva tunes, an obligatory insert in all mixes of this period, overplayed to the point of parody), this is not in the negative. It still sounds sweet and is a gentle reminder that for as much as techno has "sold out" today (television theme songs, movie soundtracks and commercials) that it still sounds remarkably fresh.
As every classic rocker needs some of the essentials of Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd with newer staples such as Metallica, Nirvana and Guns 'n' Roses, anyone who likes techno or DJ mixes needs to get a copy and develop deep roots.
Practically the worst Sasha & Digweed mix ever.......2006-03-07
I've been listening to Sasha and Digweed for a very very long time, and I wanted this Renaissance mix collection after going to the nightclub in the U.K. because of the amazing experiences there. However, I was disturbed when I listened to this 3cd set. Infact it doesn't reflect on anything Sasha has done even before these mixes. I would never have bought this item had I known how horrible it is. While the mixing is good, the track selection is not what I expected, I learned my lesson...
Essential CD for sasha fans.......2006-01-07
If you don't like Sasha and are just getting into him I suggest you try something a bit more current. This CD has been recently remastered and the mixing, production level, and track selection is truly historical but this CD is for people that like Sasha and want to own his classic sets hence the term collectros edition used on the casing. If you are new to Sasha or the genre get involver and then Ibiza and then Paul Oakenfold's tranceport for his take on the Gus Gus track purple which is considered by most people to be one of the most awe-inspiring remixes of all time.
Bottom line: U want it? go for it its pretty impressive from start to finish, featuring the likes of Leftfield, Sasha himself, moby and a tremendous host of others.

Every song rocks the house to it's foundations! Some sound very dated but still very fun to dance to!
The best of the best dance collection series ever!.......2004-04-11
Montell Jordan's "This is How We Do It" many might recall was a massive storm on the pop and R&B during much of 1995 and 1996 with it's mainstream old school hip hop beats and fun melody. I really enjoyed this track a lot during it's heyday and while R&B went down the toilet not long afterwards, this track to me has held up very well over the years since then. The next two tracks while not terrible are nothing to write home about. Planet Soul's song of the same name is the first. The song starts off promising with a pulsating beat but then goes into a state of mediocrity from there forth. The the drippy electronic sound effects are actually a bit annoying sounding more like malfunctioning microwave. Barbara Tucker's "Stay Together" is similar to the previous but fares better with a better beat and odd cymbal sound effects and the electronic sound effects for the melody work a lot better. The only thing that keeps this song from being much to write home about is that it's very short and the result is a song that sounds more like an interlude than a song. The keyboard intro to Real McCoy's "Another Night" comes in towards the ending and Real McCoy's track starts. In all honesty, flawed as "Stay Together" may be, I actually love how it transitions into "Another Night". "Another Night" is one of my favorite dance songs of all time. It is a dark but also fun dance song with very macho rapping but also excellent melody, a dark undertone and innovative beats. "Another Night" is not only a great track but after so many years since it's heyday, it has held up well over the years and it still sounds modern to this day.. The song transitions into Whigfields "Saturday Night". This very bizarre track is excellent nighttime dancing music for a party in the big city. The song is a very quirky and bizarre track but also really fun and positively cheesy. The quacking duck sound-effects in the beat are really funny to listen to. Over time, this track has become a guilty pleasure of mine. "Moving On Up" by M-People is a really fun and somewhat angry song about moving on after breaking up with someong who is extremely egotistic and how one moves on upwards. The song has a very strong disco style to it and excellent keyboard sounds. "The Bomb" by The Bucketheads is an odd track with a mix of 1970s disco/funk elements and strange voice effects to give the song a very 1960s sort of sound to it. "Dreamer" by Livin' Joy is a classic having a very strong techno rhythm and excellent vocals. I love the beat and the attack keyboard effects are really excellent. This track has also held up well over the years. "Rhythm Of The Night" by Corona is another great track. This song has a very strong and intense melody and an excellent beat. The production on this song is just excellent and almost everything that could be good about a dance track is on this track. I love the keyboard effects and like "Dreamer", this song has also lasted very well over time. Joanne Farell's "All I Wanna Do" isn't a lot to write home about. I was never really a fan of the original by Sheryl Crow and this dance remix doesn't really help either. While nowhere near being terrible or even bad, this track is among the lesser appealing songs and it has dated very badly over time. "Tonight Is The Night" by Le Click is a gem on this song. It has a really cool techno beat and buzzing synthesizer effects for the melody and not to mention excellent vocals from the late Melanie Thornton to create a great track. It's sometimes a bit sad to listen to since her passing in a plane crash late in 2001. TITN ends and merges right into what I consider one of the most unique tracks on this collection. "Find Me" by Jam and Spoon is a really hypnotizing track with a very light beat and beautiful acoustic guitars and haunting ambient New Agey sound and the result is a great song. I love the vocals and the melody is absolutely haunting. The songs acoustic guitars blend this track into the energy of the next track "Take Control" by BKS. This song is radically different from the two tracks on the first and second entries in the Dance Mix USA series. The first two are very strange and remote sounding classics. "Take Control" however is a very energetic and rave-like dance track with a great melody and unique chord structure. "Get Ready For This" by 2-Unlimited is a famous sports classics. Younger and some older audiences will almost know this song by heart. This song holds a lot of great memory for me because it was played at many sports tournaments that I participated in as a kid and it makes me yearn for those days again. It is a fun and absolutely energetic dance song that will cheer you up and look to the future. "Cotton-Eyed Joe" by Rednex is one of the funniest but also most brilliant dance songs ever done. It is a fast paced and hilarious song that actually blends Western Cowboy Bluegrass and country and mixes it with techno dance and ironically it works so well. "Set You Free" by N Trance is another excellent song with excellent melody, great beats, and great vocals. "Close To You" by Fun Factory is a fun and excellent dance track with a slight reggae-ish sound to it. I really love the keyboards and odd sound effects too. "Get Away" by Maxx is similar to the previous and a more stadium dance sound to it. "Don't Turn Around" by Ace of Base closes this dance collection on a great note with a funky and reggae-ish style and great beats.

I was flipping through some of my CD cases for older CDs, looking for something interesting to play in my dance classes. I found this one, and was curious. I listened to it in the car, and it is awesome! There are so many awesome songs on this disc. There are so many party classics on here! There are hits like This Is How We Do It (Montell Jordan), Another Night (Real McCoy), Don't Turn Around (Ace Of Base), Get Ready For This (2Unlimited) and Cotton Eye Joe (Rednex). Plus you get a lot of really good tracks by newer artists. If you love party collections, this is a must. It is a flat out awesome CD with great beats. Definately pick this up!

Rump shakin goodness.......2005-05-07
I like to dance and am very good at it. I know all the moves like the caterpillar, windmill and cabbage patch. I bought a New Kids on the Block how to dance video in Jr. high and learned the hottest moves. Cds to dance to do not get better than this. Can you start a CD with two stronger tracks than Informer and Ditty? By the end of these two tracks it's time to take a break and drink a zima with a cherry. I'm a man's man but how do you keep the energy after coming out of the box like that. Informer, say no mo daddy snow I gonna blay a licky boom boom now so say daddy ma snow i me gonna blame. That is deep and so true. He's only the best candian rapper with a jamaican accent ever. Throw that beat behind it and you're talking gold. Then Paperboy comes at you full force with the ditty. Back in I-City in the early 90s the boys were kicking it at the fieldhouse and when Ditty came on we had a planned dance that might as well have been a mating call because right away every girl in the club moved to our end of the building and wanted to buy us drinks. We picked hottays to take back to the dorms and turned it out into another party. We had this CD and we just kept the party going until John Knicely showed up and pooped on the floor. After that it smelled and we closed shop.
Some of my favorite dance songs when I was in my 20's .......2005-03-18
This CD was released in 1994 and the songs are from the '91-'94 era. Back in those days, I was clubbing every weekend and enjoying many of these songs. Here is my track by track review:
1. Informer by Snow: Not something I ever remember dancing to at clubs, just remember it being all over the radio at the time and getting tired of hearing it.
2. Ditty by Paperboy: Same as Track 1, thankfully we get past these 2 tunes early and move on to the TRUE dance music.
3. Shoop by Salt n' Pepa: I love this song, however, the mix here is not the version I prefer.
4. More & More by Captain Hollywood Project: A great example of the euro-dance music to come out of Germany during this period. Not only a dance hit, but also went to #17 on the Billboard Hot 100.
5. I'm Gonna Get You by Bizarre Inc.: A fun and lively dance tune, and the mix between the previous track & this track is flawless.
6. The Key, The Secret by Urban Cookie Collective: Another lively, bouncy dance tune like Track 5. One of my favorites from my club days.
7. Give it Up by The Goodmen: Another great euro-dance tune that uses whistle blowing and drumline, which was very fashionable in dance music at the time.
8. Talkin About Love by BKS: I don't remember hearing this track "back in the day", but it is a good dance track none-the-less.
9. Supermodel by RuPaul: Gotta love Ru. He has had other good songs since this one, but none have been this fabulous.
10. No Limit by 2 Unlimited: Another sub-genre of dance music during this period, rave. My uptight cousin used to call this kind of music "communist music", but I loved bouncing up & down on the dance floor to this and 2 Unlimited's other hits.
11. Whoomp! There it Is by Tag Team: Ugh...the real dud of this CD.
12. Take me in Your Arms by Li'l Suzy: Another sub-genre, free-style. Free-style was winding down it's popularity and originality by this point, but a good song.
13. Happy by Legacy of Sound: Back to the bouncy, frantic sound heard on tracks 5 & 6. My #1 favorite track on this CD.
14. Forget me Nots by Ava Cherry: I don't remember hearing this remake of Patrice Rushen's classic at the clubs, and although it is good, it does not come near Patrice's excellent version.
15. Show me Love by Robin S: Diva vocals to blow you away. Went to #5 on the Billboard Hot 100.
16. Finally by CeCe Peniston: Another diva who had a string of hits on the Billboard Hot 100, including this one which also went to #5.
17. This is It by Dannii Minogue: Dannii never achieved the stateside success that her sister Kylie has, and this track explains why.
Yes, there are a few duds here and some songs that are just ok, but the awesome dance tracks ("Happy", "More & More", "I'm Gonna Get You", "The Key, The Secret", "Give it Up", "Show me Love", and "Finally") well make it worth buying.
Classics from back in the day!.......2004-05-06
I still have lots of memories from many many years ago and this CD brings a lot of great memories of those days when dance music was at it's absolute best. "More and More" and "I'm Gonna Get You" are my dance anthems of my lifetime. A pity that dance music has almost completely collapsed ever since. :(((
Excellent dance album!.......2004-04-15
This second entry in the awesome "Dance Mix USA" CD series is one of my favorites of them all. I can't say how it ranks with like the first, forth and sixth entries in the series but this second volume is just awesome to listen to and all of the songs still hold up well.
"Informer" by Snow is a sadly forgotten classic from the early 1990s and has a New Jack Swing and strong old school hip-hop rhythm and excellent melody, all of which are totally absent in today's rap music! I still enjoy this song a lot. "Ditty" by Paper Boy is a lot more urban and has excellent rhyming and great beats as well. Both of these songs were fun themes back in 1993 when they were popular as I was in a lot of tournaments around this time in my life and these songs hold a lot of memory for me. "Shoop" by Salt N Pepa is a risqué danceable hip-hop classic that was like the forerunner to what TLC would do very shortly afterwards. While not on the raunchy level of "Let's Talk About Sex", this song is indeed on the wild side if you ask me. "More and More" by Captain Hollywood is a dynamite classic. The song begins with electronic sound effects and a haunting ambient intro comes and then the song becomes a highly radiant techo-dance number with some macho rapping too. In a lot of ways, this was like the precursor to Real McCoy's "Another Night" that came in the mid to late 1990s as it has some of the dark undertones of that track. I love this song a lot. "I'm Gonna Get You" is another highly energetic and fun dance song with really excellent keyboards and frantic keyboard rhythm. "The Key The Secret" by Urban Cookie Collective is a somewhat strange dance track with few vocals and fun hip-hop rhythm. I'll continue this review later.
Very interesting, it's a must if you like to party........2000-07-12
Just browse the song list and you will see what I'm talking about. Dance, Dance and Dance the night away!

Classic........2005-09-11
it was the mid-90s, and chicago hard-house was in full effect (in my opinion, when house music was still good). if you came from the northside of chicago or los angeles and were a teenager from the inner city during this time period, you'd know who badboybill is. hands down badboybill was the best from this genre, and bangin the box2 along with house connection 1 is pretty much the definition of this era.
No doubt, the man knows how to mix, but...........2002-05-06
In all the fury of lacing out a hurricane of tracks, Bad Boy Bill tends to overlook quality, focusing on quantity instead...
Beatmixing makes not a DJ my man, ease up a lil' sum sum and dig in dem crates for better records!
AMAZING, ENERGIZING, PUMPING.......1999-07-21
This cd is great for only the best bashes!!! If you are going to party outside of a dance club, GET THIS CD. It has the best artists and it is the only mix you'll wanna dance to!! THE BEST!!!!!!!!!
Another great CD.......1999-07-17
Better than the first one but the 3dr is better than thi, he just gets better and better on all his cds
Bad Boy Bill drops DA BOMB again!.......1998-08-01
Even better than the Vol. 1, Bad Boy Bill continues to bring house music to a higher level. This man from Chicago is one of the top DJ in the country, and this CD shows why. 60 minutes of non-stop house music. Add it to you collection

The Chicago Flavor........2003-03-17
Bad Boy has done it agian with this great new CD. If you want to have your'e own party away from the clubs this one is a must have. This bro keeps the Chi-town flavor alive with this one. Just keep your balls tight for the next one, you just know in some way it's gonna be more dope than this one. Shibby. Also if your'e in the Chicago area ask about Ryan B or the crew with the Chi-tow flavor CPB(Chicago's Perfect Blend). Abercrombie And Fitch Mexican Dude(Edgar) Shibby.
Seamless, smooth, rough and rugged. The legend continues!.......2002-11-16
Coming from a lifelong Chicago area Bill fan and have been grooving to his sounds for 14 years, I consider Bangin' the Box 5 to be a neccessity to every Bill fans collection,BUY THIS CD NOW!...I own over 30 Bad Boy Bill mix tapes and Cds and have recorded radio mixes of Bad Boy Bill dating back to the eighties and I can honestly say that this is one of Bill's best in the last 6 years. The latest underground house tracks hand picked by the best, and mixed to perfection, and of course,a few surprises!
ecstatic customer.......2002-08-27
If you love techno, you will love this CD. The whole CD jams!! I love every song. Can't stop jammin' to this CD. This has got to be one of the best CD's i have ever bought. You won't be disapointed if you are looking for club groovin' music to listen to. Makes you want to get up and dance or drive really fast in your car........
BANGINNNNN.......2002-05-03
first off.....bad boy bill makes a dj produced cd........it was mixed on 2 tables......then edits and accapellas were added......also some of the accapellas were already added to his recordsd to make the mix smoother..........he is a good studio dj and a great live dj but the cd was mixed on 2 tables then he went into the studio and made it the most bangin mix he could...................thats the way he works.......see him live.....only spins on 2 table.s......but he is my favorite............this is a great cd...........if you like him check out josh the funky 1.......he up and coming and his mixes are similar to bbb in style and on how its produced.....although one difference.....he mixes on 3 tables live.......enjoy the music.......peace

Brings back the memories.......2005-05-27
Started listening to BBB when i was about a junior in HS. Boy does it bring back some good memories. All of Underground constructions stuff was awsome. Sitting on AOL im'ing people and listening to this stuff was my idea of a good time.
RIP Private room hip hop
LOL..
Classic Chi-town Mix.......2004-06-01
This is definetly a classic Chi-town house mix C.D along with Dancworks Underground Construction "1997". This C.D. came out when I was a senior in high school and I was like 18 yrs old. Given it's now 2004 and I'm 26 yrs old, this C.D. still has the cuts. For those of you who still love house, you can still buy and appreciate this C.D. Bad Boy Bills finest!! It brings back fond memories.
bangin in nj.......2003-05-31
i was about 19yrs(1995) and i was just getting into house but i was sure what style i liked i was just a wallflower. anyways my freind took to see a chi-style house dj named bbb. i danced for first time to bbb's set and i never stoped. next day i went to record store and picked this one up and played so much my mom was singing the songs she was 47. anyways this was the start of the new club scene in the us this cd has it all fast breaks moodswings and everything one thing it was not very long but a good one to pick up if like classic american house.
One of the best DJs.......1999-07-17
Great CD, oldie and a classic, his first CD from the BTB series, hope he makes more
Bad Boy Bill keeps it comming....His mixes are tight as hell.......1999-02-11

great dance warm up mix!.......2006-12-12
My childhood dance life revolved around this album! I love how all the songs flow into each other for a flawless transition between movements. This album always puts me in a great mood!!
Booooo.......2005-05-07
What is this all about? I'm a great dancer, but there is not one song on this thing that makes me want to throw down on the dance flow. I like to polka and so do my friends so we formed a polka gang called, "yeah, let's dance like Polish people". Not many clubs would play polka songs, so we just had to polka to whatever they put on. We went to Ten Lies and though they were playing jibberish like this cd, we would rope off a section of the floor, pick some hot women and teach them the time honored art of the polka. We would be doing the flying dutchman throwing people all over the place that weren't ready for the frenzy that is old school polka. The new polka is all politically correct and no one throws anyone anywhere. That's not how the Urkoski Orchestra wanted polka to sound. The were brought up with the belief that polka needing to be mosh pit in motion. It was angry music from a people that were misunderstood by the irish and treated like fish. So if you want to polka like a girl, get a cd like this and stay out of our way.
