Xorcist are nothing if not inconsistent. Well, that's not entirely true--their notoriously low-budget cover art has been pretty consistent over their six CD releases. But musically, what began as a somewhat jokey, somewhat schlocky, very heavy industrial band has evolved on Nomad into a mature, sonically savvy project that aims to take the listener to the same lush, atmospheric plane on which we find bands like Delerium and Enigma. Samples of Gregorian chant mingle with long, placid synth stretches and languid beats, most effectively on "Alienautic" and the tabla-flavored "Spiritual Angles." Elements of the Xorcist of old do pop up (check out the noisy, jarring "Whiplash Sonogram"), but the band seems to have exorcized most of its industrial demons in favor of a new--and very welcome--direction. --Steve Landau

Album Description

Born of Tibetan nomads, Nawang Khechog discovered in childhood a deep affinity with the bamboo flute. In 1959, he fled to India and spent 11 years as a Buddhist monk before bringing his music to the West. Despite worldwide praise for his work, Nawang resolved in 1991 to return to mountain seclusion - until the Dalai Lama himself encouraged him to continue to share the power of his music with others. Quiet Mind reflects the far-reaching travels of this remarkable musician. It is his most personal transmission, a continuous prayer that imparts serenity to everyone it touches. With didgeridoo, Incan pan pipes, and ocarina.

A very peaceful and relaxing CD. Just listen to the samples for yourself.

5 out of 5 stars Love flute music.......2006-02-01

I got this because I love the sound of flute music and the peace within it gives me. I use the cd to calm myself and to daydream or meditate.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Beautiful.......2004-09-22

How you could NOT like this CD is beyond me. The feelings it invokes are indescribable. It touches your soul the instant you hear it. I've gotten 3 of his CD's so far, and plan on buying the rest. The word "Amazing" doesn't do this man's talent justice. He's a gift from heaven. Everyone should hear it at least once. That's all you'd need. Absolutely incredible....

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful CD.......2003-02-26

I am a huge fan of Nawang-la, this CD is spectacular.

5 out of 5 stars Exhilirating peacefulness.......2000-02-13

This is my favorite Nawang cd. Tibetan flute and Australian didgeridoo. Nawang was a Tibetan monk who eventually fled to Australia to evade the Chinese annexation. Though renouncing monkhood he is still very much involved in his spirituality and this shows in his music. I have never heard a single instrument played to such effect. Peace is the main theme of all his work but this is not passivity, this is not the sleep of unconsciousness. This is a dynamic peace, one which engages all the varieties of life yet never gets bogged down by them. There is power here, power of the wisdom of Earth and the compassion of Buddha. The music brings the spirit of the listener to the portals of Shambhala, to the heart of Tibet, and to the center of the adamantine throne on which sits the Buddha. Of course we are all really Buddha deep inside, so when we come to the center of the throne we come to the center of ourselves. Listen to this disk and you will hear what I mean. One reviewer mentioned that it is only good for sleep. I do like to listen to peaceful music when I go to sleep, but I can never do that with Nawang. The music floats, to borrow a phrase from Hildegard von Bingen, like a feather on the breath of oneness. What could be more exciting than that? But to each his own. We hear as we are able, and should one hear what another does not is that to mean one is wrong and the other right? No. Each is in his own place, and each hears what is right for him. For me, you cannot get much more right than Nawang Khechog.

While the Aqua Velvets have been at the forefront of the surf revival, their music is no slavish rehash of the genre's past glories. Instead the group offers an intriguing mix of surf stylings alongside a more complex menu of echo-laden Ennio Morricone-style spaghetti-Western soundtrack music, Latin rhythms, shimmering psychedelia, and ultrahip lounge lizardry. Nomad is their third and most accomplished effort, thanks to the sensual sway of the title track opener, the gradually building intensity of "Surf Nouveau," the evocative (and wonderfully titled) "Smoking Panatelas on the Blue Mediterranean Sea," and the roiling "Holly Tiki." And that's just the first four tracks. Overall, Nomad offers the perfect accompaniment for your next surfin' safari or even a quiet evening on the couch. --Daniel Durchholz

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great Music for Cruising Around Town.......2006-04-24

I first heard this group while listening to an internet radio station that was playing the track "Surf Nouveau". When I first heard that song I was blown away buy the sound and feel of the music. It made me feel like getting up and moving around. When I finally tracked down the CD and bought it, I was equally impressed by all of the tracks especially the one titled "Return to Paia". This track made me say "Whoa", this one makes you wish you were on a warm beach somewhere drinking somthing with one of those little umbrellas sticking out of it as you watch a beautiful island sunset. If you close your eyes and listen to this music it makes you feel really good.

All I can say is you can't go wrong with this CD if you like modern surf inspired music. This is not straight Dick Dale or Ventures stuff for those of you who are only looking for that kind of music though.

4 out of 5 stars Fine effort by The Aqua Velvets.......2006-01-05

This is an excellent album, though not quite the equal of "The Aqua Velvets", in my opinion.

The first song on the CD, and the one from which the album takes it's name, "Nomad", is a stunner . . . just beautiful, the CD is worth the price just for this one song. "Return to Paia" will make you imagine that you're a "ghost rider" on the set of "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly", definitely another keeper.

All in all . . . cool as ice.

4 out of 5 stars Mysterious Surf.......2005-09-27

The first tune Nomad gives me chills every time I hear it. The Aqua Velvets have the mysterious surf sound down to a science. This is where they shine. Sometimes the pace picks up and they loose me. But in the dreamy Lynch like moody tunes they are untouchable!

5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2004-07-26

Being a long time instrumental surf music fan (Dick Dale, Ventures, Shadows), I was very pleasantly surprised by this album. This album not only stays true to the genre but takes it further than just a revival approach. Compositions and guitar of Miles Corbin is very melodic and lyrical. I would recommend it to any surf music fans out there, take a chance and you will also be delighted.

3 out of 5 stars Surfin' Samples.......2004-01-31

Almost all of the Aqua Velvets music sounds like computer/midi samples. Too pristine and antiseptic and this "band" could definitely use a more acoustic or live soundstage. I have no problem with the Martin Denny or Les Baxter exotica/noir lounge jazz sound , just that it does not have the earthy presence of "live" instruments. It is possible to achieve this acoustic mix even with a computer. Just listen to "Surf Mania" their original release from the early 90s and check out the very "live" vibe brought to "Hawaiian Blue" by Donn Spindt's drums.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent spirited music!.......2005-01-23

I have had this CD for 6 years. I don't even know how it ended up on my shelf. I have listened to it regularly for the entire time that I have had it. There is a lot of spirit and soul in this music. It will make you want to move. It is awesome. If you like "world music", drum beats, tribal styles... you will love this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Connecting With our Past and our World.......2005-01-21

When I bought this CD I said cool Australian music. But When I heard it I was like WOW!! it was ten times better than I expected. Nomad combines the Australian aborigoanl sounds with our very own Native American sounds. The songs I like best are "Wildlife", "Gathering", and "Trading Ground". The first one is a didjereedo only track that is just awsome. The gathering made me feel in an collective mood like i was part of the whole world singing to this song. and the last one trading ground is the best beacuse it combines the East and the West. I loved the chants and the singing especially in "Tracking" and "Follow the Sun" :>

5 out of 5 stars Tribal experience.......2004-03-19

Addictive, powerful, smooth... FFFFFFFFFFFFFUN! The exotic sounds of the didgeridoo compel you to listen, the eruption of flutes and drums drive you into hypnotic trance with the smooth pulsation of voices waking you back up. What a plethora of sounds... It all draws you in. My curiosity turned to awe as the music invaded and stirred my soul. Load this into your MP3 player for your next walkabout.

5 out of 5 stars It's Out There!.......2003-02-01

I run with this music. I never heard of this group before. I bought the CD because it was recommended. Very tribal. The native lauguage with the traditional instuments and other worldly sounds.........all I can say is with this CD I am not running in the 20th century.

5 out of 5 stars Uplifting Nomad.......2003-01-12

What can I say?! This album is truly wonderful from start to ending. I've listened to this album since it's release and have never gotten tired of hearing it. Definitely a "must-have" for New Age listeners.

Popular Canadian flamenco phenomena Jesse Cook toured the world putting together the aptly titled Nomad, his fifth album. As with past efforts, Cook's lightning runs and strong flamenco rhythms are fused with Arabic and Indian rhythms and textures, Western pop vocals, and hip ambient production values not unlike a Buddha Bar collection. He also again gets some nice turns from an impressive list of guest musicians: Nomad's guests include Flora Purim, Afro Celts, the BoDeans, Hossam Ramzy, who each add their own touch. While this kind of cross-genre pollination will not endear Cook to the flamenco purists (even if there is a fair amount of flamenco's classic handclapping rhythms), there are some real strengths to the album. Cook's knowledge of his music allows him to step in out of the tradition, knowing what works without trying to force the issue. Moreover, Cooks solos bristle with the kind of energy one doesn't hear every day, even in the fiery field of flamenco. --Tad Hendrickson

I really loved this album anyone who likes Jesse Cook is sure to like this one it's Falmenco and it's not, wonderful mix of two Clutures I love the Singing and the Violins the whole album is Fantastic.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous CD. Good variety.......2006-09-13

I really loved this CD. I am a big fan of Jesse Cook and though this CD was not like his others, it was a pleasant surprise with all the variety, yet still the charm and talent of Jesse Cook. I was not used to singing on his CDs but I really liked those songs, and of course the flamenco piece at the end was great as well. I don't know how he did it with such a variety of music, but it all seemed to fit together nicely, and I listen to it over and over without getting tired of it. I think it is a nice compliment to all his other work.

5 out of 5 stars Montreal (and San Diego).......2006-06-19

I just got Montreal, so my collection is now complete. I'm not usually a big fan of live performances but I actually like Montreal even better than his studio work (which I wouldn't have thought possible!). I've been checking his concert dates and he'll be in San Diego on September 7th...I'm already clearing the date and getting ready to order tickets...it's not THAT long a drive from Phoenix...

5 out of 5 stars One of the best CD's in my collection.......2006-01-30

and I have a lot of music, everything from Fritz Reiner's Scherezade, to Wes Montgomery's Smokin' at the Half-Note. This music has passion and soul! I can't stop playing it, and I'm not getting tired of it. Quaddukka-l-Mayyas blows me away, even though I can't understand the words (not being an Arabic speaker). Jesse just nails the transition from Prelude to Quaddukka-l-Mayyas's opening phrase, and the song just makes you want to dance. It's got fire and passion! What more can you ask? All of the tracks on this album are worth the price of the CD just on their own. I own all of Jesse's CD's except Montreal. I hope someday he makes it to Vegas so I can see him live. Kudo's to an outstanding musician. I look forward to his next release. I don't know what he can do to top this one!

5 out of 5 stars Jesse Cook is GREAT!.......2005-05-20

I am so glad that Jesse Cook uses his and other's expertise to bring so much really great music to us. I have ended up with all of his recordings. That has never happened before with another artist. Many times I have bought other's albums and have only liked one or two songs and that wasn't a good thing. I loved the Middle Eastern flavor of Nomad! I came on this site to see if there were any new albums out. Go Jesse! Another album would be nice too!!:)

On Nomad Soul Baaba Maal has stayed true to his Fulani herdsman roots, singing as he travels and working with the best of those he meets along the way. On his seventh U.S. release, you will find collaborations with ambient pioneers Brian Eno and Jon Hassell, Celtic influences with Irish singers "The Screaming Orphans," and a duet with reggae star Luciano. Afro Celt Sound System mainstay Simon Emmerson produces, as do Groucho Smykle, Ron Aslan, and Mykael Riley. This CD is a successful blend of diverse musical influences united by the solid Senegalese sound of Baaba Maal. Maal and his band Daande Lenol are known for extraordinary live performances full of passionate playing and gravity-defying dancing but Maal also makes carefully refined studio recordings using top producers. The result is a polished album that does not lose Maal's vibrancy. --Jeff Grubb

3 out of 5 stars A few really good tracks; Otherwise disappointing.......2004-09-06

Baaba Maal is one of Africa's, and the world's, most amazing and spellbinding talents. I own and have played his previous albums many times, and have captivated friends and guests with the surging rhythms and soaring vocals of his music. But I'm afraid that on this disc some record company execs got wind of his talent and said, "Let's make him commercial." How else to explain the syrupy sound of the opener, "I Will Follow You," or the poppy beats and production of "Africans Unite," "Fanta," and "Douwayra?" The good news is that five of the other tracks are pure, undiluted brilliance, Baaba Maal at his usual best. The closer, "Lam Lam," was produced by Brian Eno, and has lots of droning synths and horn-like sounds, meant I guess to sound like nomads in the desert. It's interesting, but at twelve minutes is way too long and in parts lacks energy. Buy it or not? Certainly get Baaba Maal records and enjoy his phenomenal work, but get his great earlier discs, like Missing You and Baayo, first. Then if you're hungry for more, like me, get this one too, and listen to it selectively.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best albums - ever!.......2002-12-30

Although I agree a bit with some of the other reviews about "crossing over", I think Baaba Maal has done it better than anyone. This album is infectious and I can play it for anyone who has no experience with African music -- and they love it! The first track blows everyone away the first time they hear it and they are hooked from then on.

I listen to this album over and over.

3 out of 5 stars Nomad Soul.......2001-12-10

Its sad that artists such as Baaba Maal feel that they have to cross over. So often the result is a diluted version of their original sound with no perceptible benefits.

This album really comes alive with the last song, a prayer where the crossover elements are kept to a minimum.

4 out of 5 stars Not his best, but groovy.......2001-11-26

Like his fellow Senegalese countryman Youssou N'Dour, Baaba Maal has become one of the most important African musicians in the world today. I have been a Baaba Maal fan for a long time now, and have followed his career over the years. The first album I bought was "Baayo", which was released in 1991. Then came "Firin' In Fouta" in 1994. "Nomad Soul" was first released in 1997. His long time companion, Mansour Seck, who has launched his own solo career in the last few years, seems less prominent on this CD.

Over the years Baaba Maal's music has become progressively more "mainstream", no doubt opening more markets to his music. "Nomad Soul" is no exception, though the tradisional sound is still strongly evident in tracks such as Mbolo, Cherie. Other songs, like Souka Nayo and Fanta have a much stronger pop influence, while tracks like Guelel and Yiriyaro have that strong traditional and dance blend which has become characteristic of Baaba Maal's music. The last track, Lam Lam, which is a religious song about what the future might hold, is my favourite on this album. It's interesting combination of sounds along with its devotional melody/voice line does it for me.

In a way I prefer Baaba Maal's older recordings. Don't get me wrong. I am not a purist when it comes to "ethnic" music. If music stays closed to outside influences, it may end up in a museum, after all. Music is there to be listened to. But "Baayo" is still my personal favourite Baaba Maal CD. I especially like the track Diahowo in which the tension is built up to a climatic and finally inspirational release. "Firin' In Fouta" was more dancy, and features a few tracks through which it is impossible to sit still.

Hey now! I LOVE Spooky Tooth and I have everything they ever did, including thier incarnation (before they became The Tooth) as a band called Art. I would never besmirch them their rightful due, and as far as I'm concerned a whole album of the guys tuning thier instruments would be good by me! But hear me now and believe me later!! You want the DVD version of this. None of the music on this CD is any different from what appears on the DVD. At least with the DVD you can SEE the band perform. Why buy the same music twice?? In a similar vein, you also do not need "Comic Violence", that B.S. reissue of thier excellent 1999 album, "Cross Purpose". Same music, different package and title. Do not be fooled! Okay? Good. I have done my good deed for the day, and boy do I feel better for it. Remember: DVD good, CD bad. BAD!!

Tunisia and techno don't usually go together. But Carthage-born singer Amina has built a thriving, hip-gyrating career blending North African belly-dancing beats with modern dance-floor electronics. A huge hit in Europe, her surprisingly organic sound has received scant exposure in the U.S. This best-of disc should change all that by stacking up her best-known songs in somewhat chronological order, dipping as far back as her Eurovision contest winner, the soulful ballad "Le Dernier Qui A Parle," and winding up with the beat-addled scorcher "Habibi 2." Purists who prefer their Tunisian rhythms without sugar or studio polish will lap up disc-opener "Ya Baba," one of two previously unreleased selections that proves traditional-sounding material can rock as hard as the club cuts. No one-groove wonder, the French-based diva adds Senegalese touches to 1992's Wasis Diop-produced "Wadileh," while a startling cover of the Billie Holiday classic "My Man" luxuriates in Mediterranean exotica sure to break young men's concentration on at least three continents. Already a successful movie actress, Amina proves she's more than capable of affecting a cinematic sweep with her voice alone. --Bob Tarte

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Harmonious melding of cultures.......2005-02-08

I first heard Amina when I picked up Cercle Rouge on a whim. It seemed like something I'd like, so I took a gamble. The opening title was an instant favorite. I quickly did research to find out more about the artist and her work and acquired her other CDs.

Nomad is an appropriate title for this collection. It's a musical journey using Amina's Tunisian heritage base and blending it with Sub-Saharan African, American Jazz, French and other styles and influences. Perhaps my favorite is her version of "Ederlezi", a Goran Bregovic classic (It was originally an ethnic rock song from his Sarajevo based band Bijelo Dugme called "Djurdjev Dan", then appeared on the soundtrack of the Emir Kusturica film "Time of the Gypsies" under the title it bears on this album). I noticed that a previous reviewer called the song "Le Dernier Qui A Parle" outdated but I disagree. This song is mostly stripped down and showcases Amina's vocal prowse. It's one that I've listened to over and over. "Allah Ya Houlenah" is a catchy tune that sets my feet to tapping. So why not 5 stars? Well, I'm a bit stingy and reluctant to give anything 5 stars in case something better comes along, but there are a few songs that don't really stand out for me. "C'est Gay" is danceable, but the tune doesn't really pop out at me. As far as dance floor music goes it's not bad, but I generally find that techno beats drain the soul from any song.

Overall, the compilation has a good balance of the danceable the soulful served with a healthy dose of strong vocals and exotic texturing.

5 out of 5 stars I love this CD!.......2003-12-10

I ordered Amina's cd from Amazon and I enjoy most of the sings on the cds. I like the ones with the African singers in them such as Digge with a Senegalese artist. My favorite song is Allah Ya Moulenah. That songs hypes me up and makes me want to dance! I like the moroccan guys who did the back up singing in that song.

5 out of 5 stars Exotic and mesmerizing!.......2003-09-10

Amina is one of Northern Africa's most precious contribution to the music world!

Amina has a soul and mesmerizing voice that takes the listener to another world, time, and place! Spiritual yet secular, foreign yet familiar, this CD aims to please!

This CD (which conains the Best songs of Amina, actually the most popular songs) is a wonderful purchase....listen to the tracks and decide which you like and don't like.....that way you can purchase individual CD's without wasting money!

Highly recommended!

3 out of 5 stars Gorgeous voice but dated instrumentation........2003-02-11

I agree with all the reviewers: Amina has a gorgeous voice but it is not showcased to the best of her abilities.
My favorite song is : La Mauvaise Graine, it's a very catchy tune. Some songs have Arabic influences and some others African influences.I didn't like the African influenced songs much and I was disappointed since I bought the c.d thinking it had Arabic Grooves. Some of the songs sound very dated such as Celui qui a parle qui a raison. It's a very old song from the 80s and the only thing new about it at the ti me was that someone with North African origins was representing France at the Eurovision.Otherwise this is a rather slow and boring song. For excellent Global Groove songs I recommend Natacha Atlas and Transglobal Underground.

5 out of 5 stars A voice to carry.......2002-11-07

I do not always understand the words of Amina's songs, not even the French ones, but her voice carries so much emotion that the words and even the instruments can seem superflous. Her voice is smooth and deep, and I hear more to her singing each time I listen to the CD. In fact, one has to listen to this CD over and over to hear the full effect of her singing.

Le Dernier Qui Parle won the Euro Vision award in 1991 and is a French pop hit that is very Tunisian in its lyrics.

Digge (Le Gong A Sonne) is my personal favorite song, and is a duet with Senegalese singer Wasis Diop. It's about a Senegalese boxer with Senegalese rythyms and very fun and funky. It's happy and sunny, and I love the way Diop sings this one part, dadadadadada Daaaaaaah de o! It's great.

My Man is the Billie Holiday standard, a French song with Arabic violins and Amina singing so soulfully in English. A great song with an international flavor for a great international singer.

    5 out of 5 stars A Great Metal Record.......2006-03-11

Armored Saint was one of those bands that never got much notice, and its a shame, since "Delirious Nomad" is an album that shouldnt be missed by Metal Fans. Ah, the good old 1980's, with such a different variety of Metal to choose from, and of course the birth of Thrash, Death, and Black Metal came from this era. I guess we could have done without all the hair bands, but some of those bands were much more talented then some of the Nu Metal junk that is around these days. If I had to choose a catagory of where to put Armored Saint, I guess that we could put them Judas Priest and Iron Maiden, yet once again they never had the popularity of those bands. This was also John Bush's first band (the frontman of Anthrax) and to tell you the truth, he was a little bit more ballsy with Saint, yet he is much older, and your voice changes over time. This album shouldnt be missed by any fan of Metal, as I kind of think of it as a lost treasure. Its got some great guitar work here, and once again Bush's vocals are what really makes the album stand out.....SO if you dont got, get it, and ENJOY!

    5 out of 5 stars Greatness.......2006-02-09

I went to see Aerosmith in 85? I didn't even know the opening act Armored Saint. Anyhow there I am 2nd row and the show begins. I was blown away! These guys were SOLID. Great songs and a great preformance. I promptly went out and purchsed this tape. I was in love. Now 20 years later, this remains an all time favorite of mine. I followed the band for years and seen em live several times. They were a great live band. And That show in 85 inspired me to play bass. This was their best album bar none but some others were good also.

    4 out of 5 stars A Very Underrated Album.......2004-11-03

I think this is the best album the Saint ever made. It is easily better than their debut. The sound is great, complements of Max Norman I believe (Diary of a Madman and other classics). The cover is kind of cool too. My favs have always been Nervous Man, For The Sake, and Aftermath! Dave Prichard was a great guitarist and he deserved more recognition than he got. He was the heart of the band and when he passed away in 1990 (leukemia) the band was never the same. But it's cool that they are still going with John Bush coming back when he has time. I give this album 4.5 Stars. Get it and crank it!!

5 out of 5 stars this CD rules.......2004-03-04

one of the very best Metal CD's of all-time, I bought this back in 1985 and have been listening to it ever since. Highly recommended.

    5 out of 5 stars Pure Metal.......2001-02-12

This album is another masterpiece from Max Norman. He produced this and succeeded in making the Saints produce there best album. The sound is like another of his masterpieces, License to Kill by Malice but even heavier and with more clarity. It is a sonic masterpiece of pure heaviness, it is this simple if you like Iron Maiden, Metallica, Judas Priest then you will dig this, no problem.
