A decade after alternative rock and grunge took down big-haired glam metal like a wounded bear, the tables have turned: The victors now snarl double-time covers of Eagles songs for their corporate masters, while the vanquished soldier on via the former's indie label spirit. On the evidence of this debut solo release, Poison frontman Bret Michaels has also learned a musical trick or two from the competition--and a few contemporaries. "Menace to Society," "Bittersweet," and the bonus track, "Party Rock Band," bristle with Silverlake pop-punk energy, while the title track and "One More Day" evoke no less than the Heartland spirit of John Mellencamp. "The Chant" flirts briefly with rap-metal, while the tongue-in-cheek excesses of "It's My Party" evoke an unlikely shotgun marriage between thrash and Lesley Gore. But Michaels hasn't forgotten the slick, hook-laden ballads that helped make his fortune either, with the buoyant "Raine" (whose video is also included on this enhanced disc) and melancholy bonus cut "Stay With Me" displaying both solid craftsmanship and surprising range. If the album is ultimately as musically derivative as anything in the Poison catalog, it succeeds largely on Michaels's broader ambitions and willingness to push the stylistic envelope--as well as nick a few timely pop cues from the best. --Jerry McCulley
Customer Reviews:
Got Attitude?.......2007-06-09
This cd really shows how well Bret can shine on his own. Don't get me wrong I love him with Poison, but when you listen to this cd you can really hear the difference in the music from the start. Personally i like the sound he has w/Poison better, but the songs he has on THIS cd really have ATTITUDE!
It's really refreshing actually. He covers everything from Break-ups to his first Daughter (Raine) to just standard songs.
Being a female, i'm not really into the song he wrote for his daughter, don't get me wrong its pretty and sweet, but if you like Bret it's like the last thing you really want to hear him sing about is a kid! sorry.
Not bad overall though.
songs that rock.......2007-02-02
Bret Michaels is a legend and writes fantastic music and alot of people will not admit or understand just how good he is.
Bret is a master at powerful ballads and some of them on this album are awesome.
It's a Great Album.......2007-01-04
Es un excelente disco, no te va a defraudar!!!!! tiene canciones buenisimas y muy distintas a Poison pero que si sos fanatico del grupo no te van a defraudar!!!
Buenisimo, 10 puntos!!
Bret, what can you say--AWESOME!.......2006-03-07
Hey Bret is one of the most tallented song writers of our time! He will be in the rock n' roll hall of fame when he is done and his guitar playin' and singin' is very underrated! Buy this!
Bret Kick Ass!.......2005-01-27
Is first solo album (A Letter From Death Row)was a little bit disapointed, but Songs Of Life is excellent! And I think its better than the last Poison album (Hollyweird). I recommend it in your Poison and Bret collection! Long live to Bret Michaels and continue to rock the World!

Excellent ... but ..........2007-02-07
As a vintage G&S listener, I appreciated this collection but I think it would mostly appeal to the specialist-completeist. A newcomer to the genre would do well to get a full operetta DVD. (I prefer the OK BBC performances to the tarted up & modernised Australian ones.)
Old-comers probably already have all these tracks as part of their collection of vintage full operetta recordings.
But don't let my idiosynchratic views deter you if you really like G&S... but not to the extent of buying all the vintage full operetta versions.

Customer Reviews:
Maybe the acid test ..........2007-06-30
... is whether Warren would like it. I kind of think he would. Maybe he's sitting on a cloud somewhere, chuckling.
Ain't So Bad.......2006-10-26
In fact, I really liked it!
what ya gotta do is burn a CD with the instrumental followed by the Zevon original. It works for me. I think Warren woulda got a kick outta this one. I can imagine him with a cigerette holder, wearing a gray flannel suit with gold matching cuff links and tie clasp humming along with these songs as he rides to the top floor of a high rise in an elevator. And...his hair is perfect!
Shameful.......2006-08-26
You would be better served buying any other release full of WZ's music instead of this one. Part of the problem is the leaden execution of the music. It sounds like a totally midi programmed score, drum machines, midi instruments and the like. The second problem is that this release illustrates that, while WZ was a true genius musically, without his lyricism, his melodies can be repetitive. Don't agree with me? Then buy this CD, and listen to "Werewolves of London" 5 times in a row.
The most lackluster "tribute" ever produced..........2005-02-02
The version of "Roland..." presented here is the only thing that keeps this from a 1 star rating. It's dull and lacks any of the intensity or originalitly that Zevon brought to the original recordings of these songs. "Enjoy Every Sandwhich" has some great moments and heartfelt tributes, this is an insult to a genius.
the jury is out.......2004-03-07
i am a HUGE wz fan and have been since i first saw him live in boston circa 1980. i agree with some of the other comments. no lyrics means that you've lost more than half the power of zevon. however, i'm delighted that someone out there respects his songs so much as to put out a tribute record. but what i would really like to see (hear) is a tribute record performed by singer/songwriters, such as bob dylan, tom waits, elvis costello, or even eugene chadbourne, the residents or randy newman. now that would be fun !!!
and i still want 'the envoy' and 'stand in the fire' to be released on CD. get with it already !!!

Customer Reviews:
Imagination Lady + Unlucky Boy.......2007-01-26
After the four stellar albums represented by "The Complete Blue Horizon Sessions," guitarist Stan Webb took a two-year breather. Between 1970 and 1972 music changed A LOT, and when Stan was finally ready to retake the stage, the same old 4-bar blues just wasn't gonna cut it anymore. Stan's idea for the New Chicken Shack was a sort of hybrid between the old Shack and the newer heavier post-blues bands like Led Zeppelin, Cream, Blind Faith, Traffic, Jethro Tull, et al.
To my thinking the resulting albums, "Imagination Lady" (1972) and "Unlucky Boy" (1973) were not entirely successful. They never achieved the carefree adrenaline-fueled swagger of those other bands, probably due to Stan's perfectionist tendencies. Who ever heard of meticulous heavy metal? They never sold very well either (except in Germany) and their relative failure led to Stan's effective retirement a few years later (temporary, thank god). Nevertheless they represent an interesting coda to the Blue Horizon sessions, and a glimpse of what could have been.
Tacked onto these two albums is a rare German-only live album from 1974, showcasing the band in its power-4tet lineup thrashing through some ramped-up BB King, Bert Weedon and Little Richard covers. It is of passing interest, certainly not a lost masterpiece.

Album Description
This stylistically diverse and imaginative 2004 tribute includes collaborations by artists from Seattle, Vancouver and Japan - called "impressive and very cool" by The Guardian, Poor Boy received four stars from All Music Guide.
Customer Reviews:
Maybe it's good, just not for me........2007-05-31
As a longtime Drake fan, I jumped to hear an SACD of his music (never expected his own recordings would recieve that treatment at the time). I'm sorry to say, that this just sounds like jazzbos missing the emotional point of most of these songs. As Nick Drake tributes go, it ranks somewhere below "Brittle Days" for me.
The sound, however, is lovely, with surround effects limited to setting you in an intimate space with performances well-recorded in front of you. The musical styles have a wide variety - there are no lounge lizards here. Listen to the sound samples before you jump.
Luminous interpretations.......2007-04-18
How can you possibly add anything to Nick Drake's small but perfect body of work? This collection of jazz, neo-folk & faintly electronica covers tackles that daunting task & succeeds beautifully. The melancholy & wistful wonder of his songs comes through clearly, sparkling like beads of morning dew. If you already know & love Nick's music, these unique interpretations will make you love it anew. A very welcome addition to his slim canon, most highly recommended!
Worthwhile if you have the gear .......2007-02-24
This album bugged me at first -- a lot of sonic shimmering and busyness and jazz-soft rock cliches -- but it has grown on me over the years. The singer says she'd never heard of Nick Drake before the sessions, which is a bit obvious. Nick was never overwrought, prefering to whisper his mysteries rather than intone them, as she does. The musicianship is solid throughout and as far as Drake tribute albums go it is one of the best.
New directions.......2004-09-21
There has been a lot of Nick Drake activity this year. He's been dead for thirty years but that doesn't matter: the music is still evocative and moving. It's a big deal in the history of British folk and psychedelia. Drake's name comes up often as an influence. Tony Reif mounted a tribute concert five years ago in Vancouver in 1999. Tony Reif picked a lot of Vancouver jazz musicians. So this record is less than a folk tribute by some pop stars. It is more a re-imagination in a jazz context. The record never fails to surprise. It is a fresh look on Drake's music.

Album Description
John Langstaff, now 83 years of age, is the founder and director emeritus of Revels, the non-profit performing arts company that produces Revels Records as well as 'The Christmas Revels' annual winter solstice celebrations in 12 cities across the country. This is the complete collection of Langstaff's disc, featuring all four acclaimed previously re-released CDs originally recorded in England. The recordings have been digitally re-mastered at London's famed Abbey Road Studios. Included are many traditional British and American folk songs and ballads, most with simple, art song settings. Legendary pianists Sir Gerald Moore, Sam Mason and John Powell, as well as guitarist Martin Best, are featured.
