Album Description

Big Business are Jared Warren (KARP, Tight Bros From Way Back When, The Whip) and Coady Willis (Murder City Devils, Dead Low Tide). They play the kind of music that sounds like steamroller bass rumble dump truck crashing into Slayer having sex with CCR...on acid. "The line between metal and hardcore continues to evaporate: Big Business...are a bass-drums duo that thunders along on scorched-throat bellowing and f**k-all attitude"--Village Voice.

3 out of 5 stars Big Business - 'Head For The Shallow' (Hydra Head).......2007-02-02

Know for a fact I saw this band open for the Melvins not very long ago. Their style is probably considered, by most to be in the 'aggressive hardcore' direction. Not exactly my cup of tea, but okay to check out. Several of these tracks tend to sound a bit too similar. But I thought "O.G", the in-your-ugly-*ss-mug "White Piz Azz" and "Off Off Broadway" were decent. Line-up: Jared Warren-bass&vocals, John Devoy-guitar and Coady Willis-drums. Just might appeal to some fans of Murder City Devils, Rocket From The Crypt, Blackout Pact and Pretty Girls Make Graves.

2 out of 5 stars Not totally awful.. .......2006-10-26

I've tried to get into these guys but somethings not right. I've found them pretty boring. Then i relized why. These two guys have recently been absorbed by the Melvins, aka one of the best bands ever! I saw them play together. With the Melvis, they sound great! The double drum attack is amazing, it sounds like a quad bass drum! but they also played a solo set, and to me they're stuff just sound like the Melvins with out the experimentation, and High On Fire with out the guitar (which to me makes high on fire what they are). I really don't get the hype. But I think they've got promise though. Don't get me wrong, I love this kinda stuff. Kyuss, Sleep, Clutch, Karma To Burn, I think it's awesome. And don't go thinking it's the lack of guitar thats what gets to me. I'm a bassist and think the idea of a guitarless band is awesome. This just doesn't please me in anyway. Seeing the Singer/Bassist dude, dressed like Buzz, with the same hair also really annoyed me quite a bit. Stop trying to be someone you're not!
Better luck next time though!

5 out of 5 stars Pummeling....make sure everything is bolted down........2006-10-12

This is heavy music the way it's meant to be played. It's somewhat hard to believe that it's only 2 guys creating all this racket. This is bone-breaking sludge of epic proportions. Recommended to fans of Melvins, Mastodon, and High On Fire. Buy it now. I can't wait to hear them team up with King B and Dale C.

5 out of 5 stars Hessian - Raspy Soulful Vocals Shouting over Thundering Distorted Bass and Grooving Drums.......2006-10-05

This is very similar to the Melvins or High on Fire, but with more of an American soul (not that Melvins and High on Fire aren't pure American Hessians). Great song writing with catchy vocals.
The thrashing heavily distorted bass drones at about 200 beats a minute, very very fast. After buying the new Sepultura, and Mastodon, I knew I was looking for something with vocals more blues-influenced. And then I remembered how impressed I was with Big Business, bought Head for the Shallow, and man this album rocks! I've been listening to it over and over for weeks. With just two members, I'd say they're twice as potent as all 4 Melvins.

I first heard Big Business when they played live with High on Fire. It was killer! They were terrific! A two-piece, bass and drums, with the bass-player thundering passionate and soulful vocals. This is a very live band.

This is as close to Motorhead as you'll get without Lemmy.

Cover artwork is lame lame lame, but you'll want the lyrics, because the lyrics are a little bit unintelligible with all the tonal range the vocalist covers...his vocals are a whole metal opera by themselves.

4 out of 5 stars wow... the antithesis of White Stripes.......2005-12-16

A wall of sound. Just pummeling low end with vocals that sound like the Melvins. Soo great. This is just sludgy, heavey Seattle rock for the new millenium. And pretty damn catchy too in its own way. Fell in love with this at first listen. Why aren't bands like THIS getting on the radio?

Love or hate the Farrelly brothers' excessive comedies, you've got to admire their taste in music. Most notably that means their placement of Jonathan Richman at the center of There's Something About Mary, but don't forget the best of Me, Myself & Irene's Steely Dan covers. Shallow Hal, their smartly conceived romance starring Jack Black and a fat-suited Gwyneth Paltrow, scores with a soundtrack album conceptually driven by strong-willed, full-hearted women's song--Shelby Lynne's "Wall in Your Heart," PJ Harvey's "Good Fortune," Rosie's "Afterlife." Not everything here is as worthy; Sheryl Crow's stab at '80s nostalgia, "Members Only," is a weak joke, while Darius Rucker (Hootie and the Blowfish) is unlikely to start a '90s-nostalgia craze with his solo "This Is My World." --Rickey Wright

4 out of 5 stars I love this CD but it's incomplete!.......2006-10-18

First, I love the film Shallow Hal so much that I was thrilled to get the compact disc collection of music but even though I read some of the reviews that they were missing songs. I can't help that but I would have bought it anyway. I would have loved to hear the final song on the closing credits but regardless I still love this music especially Darius Rucker's song, This Is My World. I thought that should have been released for Shallow Hal film and I bet that it would have gotten nominations for best original song. I think it could have been a contender for that award. I love Shallow Hal, the film, and I would have been grateful to have the complete collection but it's not my control so I'll give it 4 stars for now.

2 out of 5 stars missing many songs from the film.......2006-08-07

A soundtrack gets its power from the combination of images with the song. There were a lot of great songs from the movie yet they are not on this lame soundtrack. The soundtrack is okay, the best songs are from Sheryl Crow and Hootie but the songs that are most memorable from the film are missing.
I understand that there were probably licensing issues precluding use but that is what makes the soundtrack good...to re-live the euphoria from the film.

By the title alone (CD Laser Lens Cleaner), the band Shallow would have you believe that this is a release without value, good for nothing than other to clear your player of dust. Not so! The music is ethereal and atmospheric, the kind that makes for very interesting dreams when listening while drifting off to sleep, or while experimenting with substances! Listening to this CD makes one think of being in outer space, isolated from others, likely very depressed due to recent romantic break-up. I would not recommend this to recently divorced astronauts, but any other fan of experimental alternative music will likely get a kick out of it.

The first major release of Overland Park, KS based trio, Shallow put out this memorable album when everyone else in the area was shelling out the most (pun intended) shallow junk you could imagine...

Sounding like a cotton candy extacy high, Julie Shields' voice will guide you through well crafted tunes that will linger in your head long after the CD stops spining...

Look for Seedy Bonus Track to remind you of Zep's Moby Dick but you'll be hard pressed to find anything else here to compare.

If you enjoy this CD, go take a look at a new band called The Capsules, which is made up of the two front men (one man, one lady ^_^) from Shallow who have since basically disbanded as of this writing...

A great CD by Shallow, but if you can have only one Shallow CD, look for High Flying Kid's stuff, as it's the band's hole in one slam dunk...

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars inventiveness.......2006-05-01

There have been many so called "cocteau twins influenced" bands but I'm not understanding how that is so. If cocteau twins taught them one thing, then that is to look around the corner and invent a whole new sound, see what else there is. If a band really wanted to be a cocteau influenced band then what they would really have to do is invent. That is what this album is all about. I don't know why there aren't more albums like this. Like I said, the experimental bands just aren't really that experimental. But, this set of songs are revolutionary within themselves. These songs could and should make a music shy person jump out of his seat and go "Oh my god! I can't play music like beck, but I can play music however I want!" There's this sort of convetional mould that makes certain songs fly on to the top of the charts and get radio play. Conventional melodies are all alike in that they say, "This is what your supposed to feel like, this is what music is." Kind of like being in a cafe and there is soft music emanating from the speakers and pictures are hanging on the wall, and the environment is supposed to create your feelings. Why does it have to be that way? All I know is that there is still this whole vast empty space of music that still hasn't been discovered yet, and this disc is totally prodding into that area, pushing on the bubble. Forget the other "experimental" bands and the "dream" bands. Viva Cocteau Twins!

4 out of 5 stars The music samples are not Cocteau Twins..........2005-09-03

I realized as I was going through all the review, and found this to be one of their only albums providing music samples, that the songs playing are not the right band. Look at your media player, I think it's the Motels. One of my favorite songs by Cocteau Twins is Sultitan Itan, so I wanted to hear the sample, only to be shocked when I heard what came out of my speakers. Don't let this determine your opinion of their sound...

5 out of 5 stars two reasons to get this.......2005-03-25

its simple "pink orange red" followed by "ribbed and veined" two of the most remarkable tracks that the cocteaus ever conjured up....everything they had been moving towards came together in this fleeting moment and then it was gone.

5 out of 5 stars Definitive.......2003-08-19

Two EPs on 1 CD add up to the best Cocteaus album? Well, not exactly, but it could be argued that this is their definitive statement, because all of their eccentricities are on display here.
Or at least, all of Elizabeth Fraser's eccentricities:
The dog-barks in the refrain of `Melonella', the curious Russian dance-like melody of `Great Spangled Fritillary'; the `Laugh Lines'-style ranting delivery of `Sultitan Itan''s chorus; `Eggs And Their Shells', containing only one decipherable word, which is enough to confirm your suspicions about the title; three songs whose "lyrics" consist entirely of mispronounced butterfly and plant names...As you can see, this is where the Cocteaus sound more like themselves, and less like anybody else, than they ever had before.
`Plain Tiger' is one of their most gorgeous minor-key ballads (why has it never been `compiled'?), the three centerpieces `Sultitan', `Melonella' and `Fritillary' are among the most unusual songs they released in the '80s, `Pale Clouded White' and `Eggs..' are stronger melodically than anything on the second side of `Treasure', and the instrumental `Ribbed and Veined' effectively recycles the chord pattern of its predecessor, the original and best version of `Pink Orange Red'.
So, eccentric as it is, no fan should be without it, and I recommend it to Cocteau-novices on the basis that "if you can take this you can take anything".
(Important note: I had to use the "Kids" review form to review this, because the ordinary review form wasn't available at the time. I am in fact genghisadonis, aged twenty-something)

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful, serene - like being deserted in paradise.......2003-06-02

Well there's not much else I can say about this album. It truly is one of those great pleasures to listen to these EPs and marvel at their magnificence. With music like this you can forgive the Cocteau's reluctance to talk about their music because in a way it speaks for itself. And there's not one review, in my opinion, that can speak of this highly enough. Because words aren't needed for this at all.

Just listen and you will enjoy

Product Description

The Oregon-based band Servant began with a classic rock sound featuring the twin lead vocals of Sandie Brock and Bob Hardy on blues-based songs that sometimes recalled Jefferson Airplane. Shallow Water was originally released in 1979 on the Canadian label Tunesmith Records, and was a hard-edged rock album forged in the same tradition as fellow pioneers Barnabas and Resurrection Band, though not as heavy. It was a breath of fresh air at a time when most CCM was cheesy, superficial, and lacking a social conscience. Known for their theatrics, dazzling light show, and smoke-bomb filled performances, many critics of the time considered them too raucous to be authentically Christian. Yet years of tireless touring garnered the band legions of fans over time. Their fame peaked in 1982 when Petra headlined for them on a national tour! Bob Rock (later of Metallica, Motley Crue, Skid Row) produced the album, but it fell into obscurity when it went out of print before CDs came along. Retroactive Records released this Limited Edition digitally re-mastered re-issue May, 2006. This is the first time it has ever been available on CD. Liner notes, including reflections on the band's history, are written by founding member Owen Brock. For fans of Rez, Barnabas, Jerusalem, and all fans of AOR/arena rock. Songs include: 'Shallow Water,' 'Rich Man,' 'Here Comes David,' 'Rejoice,' 'Jesus Star,' 'Water Grave,' 'Cup Of Water,' 'Holy Roller Blues,' and 'Fly Away.'

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Jesus rock -- of high quality.......2007-06-03

if you're a fan of Larry Norman, I think you'll love this album. Servant CDs were the soundtrack to my own salvation -- when I was 18 or 19 I contacted the band and received on autographed poster: it was a tour poster from their then-current swimming in a human ocean tour/album. As I recall the band was in transition and never released another album. Looking back on it, shallow water was probably the very best -- but all of servants music was uncompromising, socially aware and solid as a rock musically. They did have a characteristic zeal that today is lacking: CCM today is dreadful, in my opinion! But via the art of music, we can travel back to a more idealistic time, when kids/young adults were able to actually live out the pattern of early Christianity -- read ACTS: Chapter 2.

Mix Love, talent, zeal- all the elements, and still there is no way to describe the power when one is hearing this band for the first time, Servant is one-of-a-kind... The radical Christianity endorsed is still very relevant today, read below:
RICH MAN
Sammy Hager

All the silvers been varnished,
the linens white as snow
Im hiding in the library no one ever goes
And Im thinkin bout the wealth in this
big old house around me
You know I feel so ashamed and poor because
the Spirit hasnt found me

If I could lend someone a hand
Id be a rich man

I could hang out in the drawing room
and walk the length of the yard
But livin in all this splendor, sometimes
its a little hard
Cause Im really very human, with a heart
that can only melt
And in the worst part of emptiness I ever felt

If I could lend someone a hand
Id be a rich man

All the things that happen to me,
all the things that I'm goin' through
Well they make me stop and wonder,
is it happening to you
'Cause there really ain't no reason
to sit all alone and cry
So go out and give it another try

If I could lend someone a hand
Id be a rich man
If I could help someone to stand
Id be a rich man
And I could try to weave the words
of a song together
Aahh, Ooh rich man
Aahh, rich man
Aahh, Ooh rich man I feel so lost and lonely
Aahh, rich man Jesus I need You
Aahh, Ooh rich man

If I could lend someone a hand
Id be a rich man
If I could help someone to stand
Id be a rich man
And I could try to weave the words
of a song together
Aahh, Ooh rich man

If I could lend someone a hand

the blues based rock and roll, and thunderous guitar work make this CD a uniquely vital and alive experience -- like a sonic treasure recalling a time before CCM was dipped in donkey dust.

I will always remember the original lineup of Servant, pioneers similar to Larry Norman who cannot ever be replaced, though sometimes imitated today.

5 out of 5 stars The Original and Still the Best.......2006-07-25

Let me admit the biases first: Servant was our band, by that, I mean part of our commune, managed and put together by my dad, and all the people in it close friends of mine. So I am going to be pretty supportive.

I like folk rock. I miss it. Well, I grew up on it. This was decidedly a folk rock album. Pleasant music that you could understand all the words to- and you really wanted to, for the words were that good. Well, for many the words were too cutting and dangerous to listen to, for who wants to hear a call to repent, that you, the church, are not actually following Jesus Christ? Isn't contemporary Christian music supposed to just make Christians happy, and be a safe outlet to dance?

Servant was cutting edge- the first Christian band with an extensive light show, the first to use lasers, and the band that gave Petra their start. A lot of what made Servant what it was comes through in this album. The words speak to the foundational elements of our commune, the Highway Missionaries. The Jesus Movement never produced a tome like the Westminster Confession; for us, our theology was expressed in our music. Even today, when I contemplate an ethical action, I consult the Bible, and the music I grew up with.

So Shallow Water speaks of how Christians don't take their faith seriously. As Ghandi said, if only the Christians actually did what their religion called for, it would truly change the world. Rich Man speaks of the lonliness that accompanies wealth, when Christ calls us to give up all we have to the poor and come follow Him. Cup of Water reminded us of our call to care for the poor first, and not only be the poor. Here Comes David and Rejoice are praise songs- but the lines of Here Comes David unique and wonderful.

"David had a wife who stayed in town/from the top floor window she was looking down/she said, 'Hey David what do you mean, by causing a ruckus, by making a scene?/He said, 'Going to praise the Lord so go back inside/Shut the door." Truly, we need more songs in praise of dancing publicly in underwear.

Jesus Star was an homage to some of the wonderful music from the musical Lonesome Stone that toured Europe long ago. Holy Roller Blues was true Jesus Freak vintage, using the Blues to ask "Whose freak are you?", and sung wonderfully raw by Bruce, God rest his soul. He gave his testimony on stage during the tour, that lead directly into this song. It was something that made Servant unique, and spoiled all future concerts for me. Because of my dad's background in theatre, they would often have short skits interspersed throughout the songs. I came to think of this as normative in rock music. Then later I found out most concerts are so boring, for they only have music! Not so Servant, a lost art form, using theatre and music to call the Church to be what it was always meant to be.

This was one of those discoveries that happened in my own back yard. I know as well as anyone that the Kansas City area isn't the Epoch of new and innovative music so imagine my surprise when this Overland Park based trio blew me out of the water.

The whole album is almost like a whispy video game dream with lots of creative high notes. Missle Command is the perfect mini-epic. Birthday is the perfect mantra for melancoly folk, and King of the Wide Eyed Girls is just funky cool.

If you buy one Shallow album, this is their best. (3D Stereo Trouble would be my second place pick...)

Currently Shallow is disbanded (the drummer moved to the coast I think...) but the heart and soul of the band carries on. They've since refocused and renamed themselves as the Capsules. Reverser (by the Capsules) is also very good, but far more mellow in tone.

4 out of 5 stars What happened to this innovative, inventive band?.......2002-03-14

"High Flying Kid Stuff" is an extraordinary release that actually deserves five stars, but the production leaves much to be desired. Listening to this music takes me back to the days of childhood innocence when the world was still fresh and new, and not the nightmarish place you conclude it to be the more you grow up. Although an underlying sinister element and adult themes are evident in the music, Julie Shields keeps the tone light and happy, as her vocal style is somewhat reminiscent of Alvin and the Chipmunks. Please do not interpret this as insulting or demeaning, as her style offers a nice juxtaposition with the occasional heavy sounds, although interpreting lyrics can be difficult. If someone could tell me whatever became of this band, I would truly appreciate it.

5 out of 5 stars closer and closer to bliss.......1999-04-20

i have had this album for well over a year now and it never ceases to amaze me. its the perfect music for whatever dreams you might have, for whatever trips you might take, for any flights into bliss you might need, for whatever video games you might be playing. "remember that music in your car when you dropped me off last night? well i had a dream with the most beautiful music in it, and it was that song" or she said something very similar. shallow created that song.

5 out of 5 stars A must own CD!.......1999-04-03

If you like Mazzy Star you will love this record. The wonderful, dreamy vocals of lead singer Julie Shields combines with unique guitar sounds and well-written songs to make an excellent album. This group seems to have a much wider variety of sounds than Mazzy and never gets old. GET IT NOW!
