Amazon.com essential recording
It Takes a Nation of Millions was the sign that hip-hop had exploded like a grenade. A rap record as abrasive, hardcore, and eloquent as a JFK speech, the 1988 disc is one classic track after another: tense, multilayered, harmonically wild music. Chuck D. declaims like a master preacher with foil Flavor Flav's voice darting around his. They've got the desperate energy of people fighting for their lives, and everything from their pumped-up rhetoric ("Prophets of Rage") to the group's quasi-paramilitary organization to the sirens and sax squeals in nearly every track declares how urgent their mission is. It's a hugely influential album, and it still sounds fresh and frightening after all these years. --Douglas Wolk
Customer Reviews:
Who are the idiots??.......2007-04-14
I'm compelled to provide a review. For one reason. Why the f isn't this a five star album? Some reviewers out their need their keyboards revoked. I've been listening to this record on and off for almost 20 years. Each time I get the same old buzz. My old (much loved) Pixies albums don't come close in terms of providing everlasting pleasure.
For those that don't own this, just "do yourself a favour."
BTW - DJ Spooky Trojan Records excursion is a blast....(on the platter as I write)
As eerie as a siren........2007-02-18
You know, I once saw someone say that this shouldn't be considered music, and in one way, that person is right: it's an aural explosion on record, in a way not even an industrial band could execute it. This record came out at a time I was still coloring walls, but even I could connect well with it, it is that good. The record hasn't aged a bit. The first I heard from P.E. was "Fear of a Black Planet" a few years back, and I really enjoyed that one. I got to this and was shocked at how it was EVEN better.
Chuck D. and Flavor Flav have a delivery that can't be missed, and the Bomb Squad use some awesome loops and samples. The 3 or 4 interludes on here are great too, and not even those come off as filler. The lyrics are intellectual social/political message. There's not much quite like this today, in fact that might even be an understatement. Some tracks come off like siren tracks, like listening to songs like "Night of the Living Baseheads" and such. The live samples add to the energy of this record. It is a hip-hop record, but you don't have to be a fan of the genre to enjoy this. The energy could be appreciated by a rock fan, and the instrumental of a track like "Black Steel..." could be appreciated by a jazz fan maybe. It doesn't need to be limited to genres. It's a great record, period. The influence is something that's even been going on through the times, and that doesn't need to be explained or even justified.
It's cheaply priced and an amazing album, even sounding fresh nearly 20 years. It doesn't even need remastering any time soon! That's all the more impressive. There is so little not to like about this record, it is recommended to everyone from me.
PUBLIC ENEMY.......2006-11-13
WELL, BEING FROM "THE OLD SCHOOL"...YOU KNOW, "THE POSSITIVE ERA", ITS HARD TO FIND TODAY'S HIP-HOP SATISFYING TO MY SOUL.......SO I GO BACK, AND THERE I FIND WHAT I NEED.
PEACE
Wall of Sound.......2006-11-10
Possibly the greatest rap album of all time. The hard rhymer Chuck D. paired with the multi-layered production of Hank Shocklee(Bomb Squad) still packs as potent a punch as when it first dropped. Not to sleep on Flava, the greatest hype man in the business is essential to the final product; I can't imagine this album being as perfect as it is without him.
Mind Blowing from beginning to end...................2006-09-22
Chuck, Flav, Griff, Terminator X, The Bomb Squad and the S1W's was and still is one of the most powerful hip hop groups ever put together. Chuck's voice alone should be added as seperate member. Check the power of "Here it is BAM!" Absolute classic joints are Don't beleive the Hype, Black Steel, Night of the Living Baseheads, Terminator -Rock-n-Roll, She watch Channel Zero and rest of the album.

Solid Debut .......2006-07-24
The Mother Hip's, emerged from Chico, Ca during a quasi-hippie revival that swept the area (and many other parts of the country) in the early nineties. Their 1992 debut 'Back to the Grotto' is arguably their best effort, using blues, folk, country, hard rock, and a piece of the hippie mindset they were surrounded by. The album successfully combines a 60's vibe, with a slightly more modern sound.
As with most debut's, 'Grotto' is rough around the edges, but really adds to the charm. Standout tracks are 'Turtle Bones', 'Precious Opal' and the title track.
This album has grown on me over the years and I was fortunate enough to see this band in the early-early days, and I was blown away. One of the best bar bands to emerge from the 90's.

Ex-Blue Eyed Devils singer-guitarist Cotton pursued his muse from his Bay Area home to Clarksdale, Mississippi, for this solo debut. What he found in the Delta with some aid from producer Jimbo Mathus--who played guitar on Buddy Guy's last few albums and leads his own rockin' Knockdown Society--and guitar ace Big Jack Johnson was the inspiration to blend the essence of old-time string band music and pure country blues with his folk-inclined sound.
Cotton's not much of a storyteller, but his fleet picking style, delightfully raggedy vocal cords, and taste for flat-four rhythms propelled by loose-tuned snare drums create a juke joint party feel that makes for easy listening and serves covers of Skip James's "I'm So Glad" and John Hurt's "Louis Collins" well. The best cut is Cotton's own "Black Night," where his howlin' warnings about a cuckolded husband get slicing support from Johnson's thick fills and keening slide. And the album ends with the poignant wish "Goin' Back Home," where Mathus's slide resonator guitar helps brings Cotton's pining lyrics to life. --Ted Drozdowski
Album Description
An aural portrait that owes a debt to Southern bluesmen and Americana pioneers alike, Chris Cotton's Yellow Dog Records debut sounds like a house party caught on tape - world-weary men effortlessly strumming their guitars and bass, while passing around a jug of whiskey for sustenance. The barrelhouse piano, is, of course, pushed up against one wall; Cotton's gravelly voice reigns over the debauchery. The scene is timeless - harkening back to days when the distinction between blues and country was hopelessly blurred.
Former Blue Eyed Devils frontman Cotton traveled to Clarksdale, MS to record I Watched the Devil Die at producer Jimbo Mathus' vintage-equipment studio, housed in the city's historic WROX radio building. Employing Memphis and Clarksdale sidemen including special guest Big Jack Johnson, Cotton and Mathus concocted a modern-day jam session with all the boisterous spirit of a classic down-home revival.
Customer Reviews:
listening to him watching the devil die.......2005-03-15
As one of the privileged folks to get an advance preview of the new album, I just want to say, f***ing awesome! This is easily Chris' best album to date. Black Night is an absolute masterpiece of live blues. Yet the album is also breaking out of the restrictions of 12 bars into uncharted territory. It's a new Chris, yet beatifuly blended with the best of the old Chris. Vocally he covers new ground as well, like the heartfelt and soul stirring IM SO GLAD. I feel an autobiographical flavor to the new songs like Morgan, Mississippi or in Come On, where he admits to never having killed a man. I love it!Kind of reminded me of a rapper admitting he's not in a gang but he can still flow. All in all, a pleasure to listen to from the first track to the last. Keep up the good work and see you at the cd release party
Authentic blues flavor.......2005-03-12
I Watched the Devil Die is a great down-and-dirty blues album. Whether you're a blues enthusiast or new to the genre, this is a must-have album. A mix of original songs and covers, Chris brings his own flavor to to the set. Chris plucks the guitar with so much intensity he breaks strings, while his voice captures pain, desperation, and longing with true authenticity. The recordings sound live, not heavily mixed, making the album feel like an authentic down-and-dirty gem from a true bluesman.
Mr.Cotton did it in the kitchen with a six string razor.......2005-03-09
"...the human word is like an outworn, battered timbal upon which we beat melodies fit for making bears dance when we are trying to move the stars to pity." -Flaubert
Which is my big ol' ham-fisted way of saying when it comes to Real Blues or what The Straight People (More Sugar!)call blues I ain't so sure I got my homework done enough to know what the heckfire i'm talkin' about. However in the spirit of MY Real Blues (and Mr.Cotton's) to hell with the damned stars and bring on the dancing bears!
I just finished listening to Chris Cotton's new CD titled I Watched The Devil Die. I'm awful sorry to say the best language I could come up with at the final note (without my usual swearing) was WOW! You'll be adding your own abundant and imaginative expletives after you hear it for your self. I'm at least honest enough to admit I know about enough about Piedmont style and other finger pickin' styles to keep my mouth half shut about Mr.Cotton's technical skill. On the other hand the fellow I work with is versed. His word as nail-hit-on-head upon listening was Exceptional! Most finger-pickin' sorts have sounded high-brow, tight and too pretty clean to my mud and woods tuned ears. Mr. Cotton despite his dangerous knowledge makes it roll out and around the ol' dirt road just as natural and rockin' as can be not forced faux and special. Mr. Cotton covers some of the masters works here. Mr. Willie McTell's Dyin'Crap Shooters Blues, The Mississippi Sheiks' That's it, and of course Mr's Hurt and James with Louis Collins and I'm So Glad. But this man's a fine songwriter too. Six of the twelve here are his and fit quite comfortably up against the old
timers. Each song sounds like it was played (not performed) at a late night pickin'party among good friends. The song Black Night sticks out for the help and heft of Mr. Big Jack Johnson's after-hours slide and as well for Mr. Cotton's xtra fine band's joyful playing on such a dark and menacing song. Mr. Jimbo Mathus' production here as usual brings you in to the room and sets you nicely in the hot seat front and center of the action goin' down live and naked and steamin' in the Mississippi midnite hour. I just gotta hope Yellow Dog Records P.R. Machine is fired up to overheatin' overdrive on this disc 'cuz if work this good isn't hailed in all the so called blues mags and beyond then sombody someplace ain't payin' attention.
Of course most folks don't Listen cuz they're too busy bein' dazzeled by the stars and wouldn't Hear great music if it was a dancing bear bitin' their ass.

scooter really got started with this album.......2006-05-28
scooter was always a great band, but with this album it was like they went to a whole new level and pretty much stayed there throughout this album and the next albums past this with MAYBE the exception of 2000s shefield which wasn't bad itself. When this album starts out and watch out comes on you almost know the rest of this album will rock and it does just that. So I give it a 5 out of 5 for that.
As usual, Scooter won't deceive you !.......2000-02-25
The first track, which is an allusion to "Encounter of the Third Type", clearly announces the color of the album. I particularily loved "Faster Harder Scooter" and "The Learning Process", but sometimes the music is a little stressing and could eventually cause hedaches ;^) BUT IT'S WORTH IT !
Scooter - Simply the best.......2000-01-05
Just like all other Scooter albums, 'Back to the heavyweight jam' doesn't have one bad track. All songs are great. Especially 'No Release'
Back to the Heavyweight Jam [IMPORT]........2000-01-05
This CD isn't the best Scooter CD, but it continues their great tencho kingdom as hardcore as ever. I srongly recomend one buys other SCOOTER CDs first, but this CD is for sure on my must-have list.
FASTER HARDER SCOOTER!
What can you say.......1999-12-21
I have all their albums and most of their singles and this one i will admit i am proud to add to my collection their music is fast enough to get you moving but also smooth enough to justsit and listen to as a backgroung sound. loved it, and will continue to love it.

Album Description
>>
When I first heard these guys play at Huey's in Midtown Memphis, I became an instant fan. Their music was so fresh, yet obviously inspired by the three historic sites of soulful record-making in the South: Muscle Shoals, Memphis and New Orleans. There were choice cover tunes by the Meters, Allen Toussaint, Otis Redding, Al Green, the Band, Dylan, Marley and more that the group expertly arranged and made their own, along with clever, inventive, self-penned songs that truly were original. My first impression hasn't changed, just intensified.
Then and now what locks you immediately into their funky modus operandi is the Crescent City second line syncopation and in-the-pocket pops of Chad Gamble's drumming. Reinforcing this unceasing rhythmic flow is the crawling, pulsating, agile bass work of Will Lowrimore. Back to the bottom indeed. Al Gamble's keyboard work overlays it all with those cool vintage tones, percolating wah-wah intensity, organic vibrato swells, and tasteful, delectable soloing. To top it off, Art Edmaiston's sax work offers a cornucopia of righteous riffs that can blow a burning injection of bebopping jump into the mix and send this band into orbit. And everybody sings!
Back To The Bottom ups the ante in terms of creativity and expression. It is a fully realized work of studio artistry, where attention to detail and subtle production enhancements allow the songs' many facets and textures, as well as the consummate musicianship and genuine good vibes of this band, to shine through. And though the performances here are inspired, they skillfully avoid jamband excess.
If you are new to the GBB, this CD will be a revelation that grabs you from the get go. You'll soon find yourself head-bobbing, booty-shaking, and singing along while you feverishly try to find out when this combo will be playing at a tiki bar nearby. Repeated plays will reap evermore appreciation. As with all great music, these songs will take you somewhere special
.so slip down Escape Alley to the winding banks of the Mississippi, discover the lair of the mythic Cadillactopus, and get Back To The Bottom with the Gamble Brothers Band. Southern living is good for you.
Dan Phillips, The Spin Doctor, WEVL, Memphis

Must own album........2004-12-17
This blend of rock/soul/funk is served up Memphis style with some amazing tunes, solos, lyrics etc...It is one of my favorite new albums. A must own!
Whooo Doggy.......2004-05-01
I saw this group play in St. Louis the first time about a year ago. This CD is elecrtifying!!! All of the members are obviously talented musicians, that's a given if you've ever seen them live. If you're a lover of great music this CD is a must! You'd never guess these dudes were of WASP descent if you heard them on the radio. More soul than James Brown and more funk than George Clinton combined with the musicianship of Steely Dan. This group should make it to stardom someday. Check out "Tiki Bar" and you'll be hooked instantly.
It's good for you!.......2003-10-31
Man o man o man. These guys have hit it on their second effort. If that first groove ("Record Store") doesn't grab you, you cannot be grabbed. Excellent cover of Randy Newman's "Little Criminals" accompanies some excellent groovy Memphis funky stuff. "Land of Soul" brings a Tipitina's backbeat to a Memphis state of mind - Otis, Rufus and Booker T - be proud!

Album Description
Hacha's sophmore release can be defined as a true Rock album. Going back to the days where the Allman Brothers ruled the south, and Led Zepplin ruled the world, Hacha would have fit like a glove. Today, with an original almost Black Crowes sound, this new album hopes to shed light on a music that may at one time have been dead, Rock'n'Roll.
Customer Reviews:
Grown since Meet the Tinker.......2002-11-14
I've known these guys since High School, their talent has grown so much in the past five or six years. This album is a great follow up to Meet the Tinker, it keeps the same style but shows so much more of who these guys really are. The whole album is great. You can hear in Chris's voice how much he really feels everything he's singing.
Oooooooooooops Someone Hit The [...] Meter!.......2002-11-10
As if Black Crowes style southern mud rock hasn't already scraped the bottom of the barrel. Now we contend with the up and coming shadow dwellers. Hacha. The west coast band with a southern sound. Hey! Didn't Credence Clearwater milk that idea dry years ago? What I don't like about the songs is the lackluster structure. There's hardly substance. The lyrics are symplified beyond cliche. And the guitar riffs remind me of modern Santana stuff. Only [worse]. Bass lines are hardly fresh nor intriguing enough to allow my stomach to digest the multitude of musical amatuerity displayed on this album. May God intervene and dissrupt the ears of innocent listeners; who may come accross this heap of musical [...]. NOTE: The design on the CD is nice. Makes a wonderful coaster.
These Guys Rock.......2000-11-05
Their 1st album was good but nothing prepared me for the roller coaster ride of rock and roll on this release. One taste and you'll be hooked...look for these guys at the Grammys some time soon.
Honest-to-God rock and roll!.......2000-09-29
These guys have got it all. The guitars, the groove, the no-nonsense rock and roll. Check out the sound clips. Once you hear it, you won't be able to resist this redblooded music.
Watch these guys. Hacha is going somewhere!
