The Fountain is a layered, often beautiful score from composer Clint Mansell. The disc seamlessly moves from ambient drones to plaintive piano music to slowly percolating minimalist stuff to hugely swelling strings. Mansell, who's collaborated with director Aronofsky before, uses almost anything from the minor-key sonic palette available to him, with the exception of the mopey yuppie-folk and instantly dated electronica so often thrown into films. Mansell's own group, the superlative Kronos Quartet, is joined by Scottish noise act Mogwai. The use of such an arty, detuned guitar rock band as Mogwai in a big time movie soundtrack might seem weird, though of course Explosions in the Sky's work on Friday Night Lights was a harbinger. It's too soon to tell if this is an outright classic of soundtrack music in the realm of Goblin's Suspiria, John Carpenter's Escape from New York, or Popol Vuh's Aguirre. But it is definitely a subtle, melancholic work you'll want to revisit often. --Mike McGonigal
Album Description
For the soundtrack to writer-director Darren Aronofsky's long-awaited sci-fi epic, The Fountain, Kronos Quartet reunites with composer Clint Mansell. The had previously collaborated on the haunting score for Aronofsky's Requiem For A Dream.

Chillingly Beautiful.......2007-07-11
This soundtrack is amazing. The songs are so beautifully composed. I saw the movie and the same night bought the album. Some of the tracks bring me close to tears. I can't stop listening to this soundtrack! It's a must have for anyone who appreciates powerful instrumentals.
Gorgeous.......2007-07-08
This is music that is so beautiful, you won't want to stop listening to it.
phenomenal.......2007-06-29
Oh...what could be said to truly describe the beauty of this CD. It's phenomenal. Clint Mansell together with Kronos Quartet did an amazing job. I can't stop listening to this CD. And it's been months. Could it be because it let's me relive the story of the two people in love? It's very romantic. The piano is mesmerizing. I think that if you've watched the movie, by listening to this soundtrack you can relate to the journey that those two characters are going through. The journey of love....."Together We Will Live Forever" is probably my favorite. If you could, would you want to live forever? With the one I love.............YESSSSSSSSSSSSSS
Sweeping and powerful.......2007-06-18
The movie was stunning and so was the soundtrack. They moved so well together that I was moved to tears. My husband felt that it was a bit repetitive but that's because they use the same melody in each song though each song varies dramatically. It's as if the melody is the story moving along and taking different shapes with every scene. I thoroughly enjoyed both.
*Side note* It's great music to study to.
Haunting and Mesmerizing.......2007-06-05
I have not seen the movie yet, but this soundtrack album by Clint Mansell is a classic. The music is minimalist, haunting and entrancing. The music is three dimensional, soaring through various levels of emotion, including the deep spiritual emotions of yearning, love, pathos, and isolation within an infinite universe. Stands alone as a work of art. Beautifully played by the Kronos Quartet.

Country music's infatuation with the puka-shell rock of Jimmy Buffett has been one of the genre's less fortunate indulgences. Most of Nashville's hat acts do little more than dip their toe in the water and do nothing to build upon Buffett's signature sounds. That's why License to Chill, which features a plethora of Music City guests (Alan Jackson, Kenny Chesney, Clint Black, George Strait, Martina McBride, Toby Keith) along with Bill Withers and Nanci Griffith, seems like a bad idea. But the album, on which the Key West hedonist performs his favorite "bar gig" songs, as he calls them, often delights. As someone who began his songwriting career in Nashville (and who's also recorded more than half his albums there), Buffett isn't just slumming, as his choice of covers (from such writers as Guy Clark, John Hiatt, Hank Williams, and Jerry Garcia) proves. What could have been little more than a lark, then, ends up being a showcase for Buffett the serious songwriter and song finder. Although he does indulge in the occasional beach-minded thong-writing, Chill is a surprisingly satisfying album aimed less at the Parrothead crowd and more toward an audience who remembers the Buffett of 30 years ago, a man who struggled to make his mark among Nashville's most revered tunesmiths. --Alanna Nash
Customer Reviews:
Buffett grabbed me into his crazy little world with this one .......2007-07-01
Jimmy Buffett may be into "chilling out" more these days, but his songs on "Licence to Chill," made in collaboration with numerous talented country artists, indicate a man who is hardly resting on his musical laurels. In fact, this CD not only sparked my interest in Buffett's storied career, but it also endeared me to the genre of country-western music much more. Before this CD, my main connection with Buffett was checking out the Boat Drunks live (see the Drunks' album Wahine Man). Truthfully, I used to regard JB and his followers as little more than binge-drinking mainstream Americans whose idea of good music was what came out of the jukebox at the local Perkins restaurant. I stand corrected, though, thanks to this amazing CD.
A rousing cover of Hank Williams' "Hey Good Lookin' " (recorded with several big-named country artists) was the perfect ditty to lead off this album, but the song's carefree sound and attitude don't fully define "License to Chill." Many of these tunes take the time to reflect on life, aging, love and heartbreak. The title track, however, like the opening song, has all the reflection of a Budweiser commercial. Still, that's OK. Buffett seemed to be making some statements in creating this CD: First off, he's earned his right to chill royally, and second, he wanted to get back to his apparent country roots, which he certainly accomplished in spades.
The more mesmerizing and harmonic tunes from this CD are the slower-paced ones such as "Boats to Build" (with Alan Jackson), "Coast of Carolina," "Anything Anytime Anywhere," "Trip Around the Sun" (with Martina McBride), "Coastal Confessions" and "Sea of Heartbreak" (with George Strait), all beautiful compositions that shocked me into truly respecting Buffett's outlook and musical talent. My personal favorite from this plethora of amazing tunes is "Window on the World," a mid-tempo, down-home country song if there ever was one. On it, Buffett's voice is severely baritone (purposely hungover-sounding?), while his lyrics are candid, philosophical and resigned, but also convey a hint of mischievousness and sparkle for life. A great slide guitar and solid acoustic guitar work also enhance this most tuneful of tunes.
There's some cool, more rugged tracks as well. The confident and self-knowing "Piece of Work" (with Toby Keith), the humorous and true-to-life "Simply Complicated," and "Conky Tonkin" (with Clint Black) would each satisfy the insatiable restlessness of any true country fan. Meanwhile, bona fide Buffett fans will take heart with the album's last two songs, "Scarlet Begonias" and "Back to the Island," which are full of enough lighthearted lyrics and islandlike sounds to make one realize JB would never totally abandon the seaside fluff he's so aptly made a great living at. From slow-dancing prom songs to organic country to a rollicking good time, "License to Chill" is a fantastic piece of work from top to bottom, by a longtime musical artist who managed to erase my condescending scorn and attain my utmost respect with one fell swoop of a CD. In the end, "License to Chill" also accomplishes what it perhaps set out to do: help others enjoy life, despite its bothersome inadequacies and travails.
Escapism via Buffett.......2007-01-31
This is a great albumn to kick back with a frosty beverage and relax. If you've ever experienced a warm salty breeze and sand between your toes it'll bring back a lot of good memories too. Definately a must to take along on any trip to a warm beach somewhere.
A Bit Heavy On The Country For Me.......2006-11-15
Much to the surprise of just about everyone including Jimmy himself, Buffett makes one of the most remarkable commercial comebacks in the last few decades with the release of "License To Chill". The album became a smash hit and sat at the number one spot on the album chart for weeks, and was nominated for a Grammy. The album spawned several huge country singles including a cover of Hank Williams "Hey Good Looking" and "Trip Around The Sun" a duet with Martina McBride. I believe it is his best selling album ever. For this to happen to a performer in his late 50's is truly remarkable. The comeback actually began before the release of this album. Country crooner Alan Jackson asked Buffett to appear on the song "It's 5 O'clock Somewhere" which became a huge smash. Buffett had been mulling over the possibility of doing a pure country album and decided to strike while the iron was hot. "License" is loaded with gust appearances from a who's who list of country music stars. Clint Black, Kenny Chesney, Alan Jackson, Toby Keith, George Straight, Martina McBride, Bill Withers and Nancy Griffin all put in an appearance. So the question is.......is the album any good? I guess it depends on your perspective. Not being a huge fan of country music this is far from my favorite Buffett album, but it does have its moments. I tend to like his more traditional non country oriented tracks on this album the best. "Coast Of Carolina" is simply one of the best love songs he has ever written. This song really gets to the heart of his marriage and tells the history of it's ups and downs. I am not usually big on love songs but this one resonates with me for some reason. "Coastal Confessions" is a cool tune. His cover of John Hiatt's "Window On The World" works well. Another highlight for me is the cover of the Grateful Dead's "Scarlet Begonias" which I like better than the original and seems to be another perfect song for Buffett to tackle. The album closer "Back To The Island" is another nice track. Of the country stuff, "License To Chill", "Boats To Build", "Trip Around The Sun" are all good ones. When I saw Buffett in Chicago a few years ago Martina McBride came out and sang "Trip" with Buffett. She has an awesome voice. The rest of the album is ok, country fans probably like it more than I do.
To much country.......2006-11-12
This was just to much country for this parrothead. I liked one song, Piece of Work and that was about it.
Good Buffett duets.......2006-11-04
Although i am not a hugh country music fan, this album is a good listen very well done nice songs

Merle's 40 #1 Hits.......2007-03-09
I am so glad that I purchased this CD. It is the best CD to have if you are a Merle Haggard Fan. This CD gives the music fan a great taste of all his hits throughout his career. I recommend this CD to any country music fan that loves the "Oldies" of country music and the artist that sings them.
Haggard's 40 Best.......2007-01-18
If you're a Merle Haggard fan, this CD is a must have. From way back to fairly recent, all of Merle's greatest are here. This is real, pure country music.
TO ALAN: NOW I'M A HAGGARD FAN TOO!.......2006-01-21
I owe it all to Alan Jackson. Recently I bought his album, WHEN SOMEBODY LOVES YOU and was listening to the first track, Meat and Potato Man. As I listened I heard Jackson sing, "I'm a Haggard fan. A meat and potato man..." I backtracked on the CD to make sure that I had heard him right. Did he say a Haggard fan? After playing it few a couple of times I was sure that Jackson was pitching Merle Haggard.
Interestingly, the lyrics came back to me again and again over the next few days until, finally, I determined to check Haggard out and 40 #1 HITS was the album that I chose. After listening I can certainly see why Alan Jackson would call himself "a Haggard Fan." If you haven't heard anything from Merle Haggard, there's certainly much more than the stereotypic "Okie From Muskogee." Here you'll be introduced to a broad range of Haggard offerings like "Mama Tried," "Grandma Harp," "I'm Always On A Mountain When I Fall," "Pancho And Lefty (with Willie Nelson)," and, my album favorite, "Going Where The Lonely Go." But, heck, there are forty songs here, any of which I could have listed.
Is Haggard worth a listen? Absolutely. Alan Jackson was dead right!
THE HORSEMAN
To Add to Your Collection.......2005-03-25
According to Billboard, Merle Haggard from Bakersfield, CA had 90 chart releases from 1963 to 1990. Think about that statistic! All 38 #1 songs are here on this two CD release. Two of Merle's 8 #2 hits round out the collection. Personal favorites are highly subjective but his reviewer favored "Things Aren't Funny Anymore", "and "Sing Me Back Home". The latter was dedicated to a former fellow inmate at San Quentin who was executed for murdering a prison guard. The former was composed while a marriage was breaking up. VERY special mention goes to " I Wonder If They Ever Think of Me". It's about a POW in Vietnam who is afraid his family and friends back in the World have forgotten him. That must have happened in real life far too often. The only tracks that failed to satisfy were the 3 duets, "Bar Room Buddies" - with Clint Eastwood! - "Pancho and Lefty" with Willie Nelson and "Yesterday's Wine" with George Jones. There is a fine quasi-duet with the ubiquitous Janie Fricke, "A Place to Fall Apart". Merle has always admitted to be heavily influenced by Lefty Frizzell and the similarity of styles is unmistakable, more to the credit of both men. Linear notes by Nancy Henderson embellish the collection and give context to several of the tracks. (Some may feel that the small, dropped out typeface doesn't do the insert complete justice.) Before reading Joel Whitburn's "Billboard Book of Country Music", this reviewer was unaware that many of Hag's best-known work did NOT attain #1 status. That list would include "Ramlin' Fever", and "Misery and Gin". Their exclusions should be ignored. The final word here is that this CD is a worthwhile addition to any serious classic country collection. For the $$, it is also a great value. Testimony such as that may appear trite, but it is on target in this case
Barroom Buddies is off vinyl!.......2005-02-01
The hard to find duet "Barroom Buddies" with Clint Eastwood from the soundtrack of Any Which Way You Can is taken from VERY poor quality vinyl for this collection. Shame On You Capitol Records! Although this collection is issued by Capitol Records, I have a sneaking suspicion that many of the songs here that were originally released on Capitol are rerecorded versions. Can anybody verify this? The Sony titles are definetly the originals (tracks 9-20 on disc 2).

Clint Black is often an amazing songwriter with one of the best pure voices in contemporary country music. However, since his impressive debut, Killin' Time, Black seems to have grown increasingly more attached to clever word play and abstract ideas than he is to emotion and narrative. And when the songs are as awful as "A Bad Goodbye" (an overwrought 1993 duet with Wynonna), who cares how good his voice is? The Greatest Hits collects, seemingly at random, 14 of his Top 10 hits released between 1989 and 1996, plus an album track and a live Eagles cover. However, it omits at least 10 singles from that period that were every bit as popular and, unfortunately, most of them were from his superior earlier years. Still, any album that includes "A Better Man" (a modern country masterpiece), "We Tell Ourselves" (an idea song that works), and "Put Yourself in My Shoes" (as good a male vocal performance as Nashville has heard in 15 years) can hardly be called bad. But it sure can be called disappointing. --David Cantwell

CLINT BLACKS GREATEST.......2007-02-04
What can you say about his amazing voice combining with the talent of Wynonna Judd? This is an awesome cd.
great!.......2006-11-04
Clint Black is truly a great singer. This album showcases a good collection of his greatest hits. My favorites include "State of Mind," "A Good Run of Bad Luck," "A Bad Goodbye," "A Better Man," "We Tell Ourselves," "Life Gets Away," and "No Time to Kill." (not to put down the other songs of course) Any fan of Clint will find much to enjoy on this terrific album. I am very glad I bought it, and I knew what I was doing when I did.
pretty good.......2006-05-15
i like quite a few of the songs on this cd and that is rare. i bought it mainly for Desperado and Like the Rain, but most all of them are good
Some light shines trough, country music that just kick a little........2006-01-06
Clint Black greatest hits ? Not much to write home about, sorry to say. It`s realy a downfall his version of the Eagles master peace Desperado. Sometimes everything goes wrong here, especially his voice. But anyway let`s take a look at the bright side on this album. The best songs are Track 15 No Time to Kill, which have a certain sting to it when it comes to
singing capacity and country flavour. Track 14 Life gets away also is a good listen, an has hit poential. It sounds like belive it not like the The Cure crossover with country music.
Track 11 Cadilack Jack Favor also have some charm.
Track 8 We tell Ourselves swings a little bit too. Track 6 A better man has quality and "swing along". Track 2 Summers Commin kick a little , but the rest of the tracks don`t make
me feel "country halleluja", sorry to say. Clint Black is not up there with Alan Jackson and Garth Brooks.
The Greatest Stinks Collection!!!!.......2005-12-31
This is a MAJOR let down to me. If these are his greatests then I'm going to stop buying his music. Seriously, if you like country music don't let this guy spoil it for you. DO NOT BUY THIS CD!! Get Randy Travis instead.

Composer Clint Mansell made his impact as a soundtrack composer known with his production of the Pi soundtrack. On that disc, the former vocalist for UK group Pop Will Eat Itself melded an abstract 20th-century classical sensibility to electronica with great (and eerie) results. On Requiem for a Dream--the follow-up film from Pi director Darren Aronofsky--Mansell repeats his magic. Here, teamed with the Kronos Quartet--one of the world's foremost (and most progressive) string quartets--Mansell fuses big-beat, ambient, and driving chamber music. The result is a mesmerizing aural complement to an already mesmerizing film. Dark, unpredictable, and thoroughly engrossing. --Jason Verlinde

WILD AND WIERD.......2007-05-12
This movie was really a complete mind blowing experience. It should be the poster movie of why not to do herion. Showing what addiction to anything can do and what it will bring you to. Somewhat a love story and very sad for all the characters involed.

perfectly told story about addiction(s) and how people cope with them. it's beautifully sad in every way.
you gott'a love ellen burstyn. she's amazing in this film!
Not the orchestral version used in the "Two Towers" trailer.......2006-05-14
Ok, so don't bash this review. I've never seen the movie, and based on its depressing themes, doubt that I ever will. And I'm not a big fan of this CD either.
I bought this CD ONLY because I heard this thrilling soundtrack for a Ronaldinho soccer video that I had downloaded off the Internet, which some people thought was the Overture from Requiem for a Dream.
Unfortunately, as the Amazon website for this movie soundtrack CD does not have song samples from the CD, I had to actually BUY the CD to see if it contained that soundtrack. The closest track to the song that I was looking for was "Lux Aeternum". The rest of this CD, those tracks that did not repeat the main theme from the movie, I found pretty disappointing.
So I did a vigorous search through the Internet, and finally discovered that the track that I had heard was an orchestral remix of "Lux Aeternum", done especially for the first movie trailer for "The Two Towers". A Google search turned up a post on Aintitcool.com by someone with the screenname of Fatboy Roberts who described how two MP3 versions of this orchestral re-mix came into being.
As far as I can tell, this gorgeous bit of music does not exist in a commercially released form. It is certainly not one of the tracks on the "Requiem for a Dream: Remixed" CD. And so although I would actually like to BUY this music, I was able to find it only on Internet file sharing networks.
Use various combination of keywords such as "Lux Aeternum, "Requiem Overture", "Two Towers", "orchestral remix", "Fatboy Roberts" when searching for this piece.
Amazing Soundtrack.......2006-04-04
Clint Mansell & The Krono's Quartet managed to put together a wonderful soundtrack for the film. It works very well on the screen, and is enjoyable to listen to without the movie playing. I definitely recommend this piece!
I'm reviewing this from a slightly different perspective..........2005-12-14
First let me say I have not listened to a ton of original movie scores. So...I'm not sure if every score is as fragmented, short, and abundant in tracks as this one. The pieces of music on this disc, though extremely short, work to PERFECTION on the screen. However, put together in a compilation like this are not as enjoyable for me. The main reason for this is the fragmented nature of the compliation I described earlier. There is no real transition or continuation between most of the tracks on this disc. But do not misunderstand, the music on this soundtrack is phenomenal. (Signature and best track is definitely 'Lux Aeterna.')
I say I am reviewing this album from a slightly different prespective because I listened to 'Requiem for a Dream: Remixed' before this soundtrack. In comparison to the remixed soundtrack, this soundtrack seems extremely sparse and leaves you wanting a little more in the way of longer tracks, more layering, and an overall cohesiveness to the soundtrack.
Conclusion: If you listen to this soundtrack and think how great all these potential samples could be used to create something more, I would suggest picking up Requiem for a Dream: Remixed. However, if your really not into 'remixes' then THIS album should definately suffice and be worth the purchase price.

Black's Heartfelt Venerable Tribute to "Love" .......2007-05-23
Prime Cuts: My Imagination, Something that We Do, Our Kind of Love (with Carolyn Dawn Johnson)
Cupid's quixotic ways gets an album's worth of veneration on Clint Black's latest enterprise. Culled from his extensive canon with one previously unrecorded entry (Jim Croce's "'I'll Have to Say I Love You in a Song"), these are all songs thread together with romantic love at their cynosure. However, this is not your typical "best of" collection; these numbers are re-recorded with Black himself at the helm. While some have a religious similarity compared with the originals, a few are creatively encased with a different arrangement and nuanced by Black a little differently. Vocally, Black hits the high water mark here: he brings a more seasoned maturity that gives these romantic excavations depth and insights sometimes missing from the originals. Fans who have had been smitten by Black's honeyed nasal twang (as well as his chiseled dimples) will have much to revel here.
As aforementioned the sole previously unreleased track is Jim Croce's "I'll Have to Say I Love You in a Song." Employing a 70s rock palette dotted with some winsome dobro punctuations, the midtempo "I'll Have to Say" rocks romantically with a tongue-tied Black opting for the radio as his communicative means to express his feelings to his paramour. Most drastic in terms of its stylistic make-over is "Our Kind of Love." While the original has a sinewy bluegrassy feel with Alison Krauss offering barely audible backing, this new version is a full-blown duet with Canadian chanteuse Carolyn Dawn Johnson on a fuller country underpinning. Similarly, Black's Grammy nominated duet with wife Lisa Hartman-Black "When I Said I Do" enjoys a luscious orchestrated arrangement, making its message of committed love sound even more gorgeously romantic.
Though Black nuances certain words differently relative to the original, "Something That We Do" still preserves the acoustic feel of the original. On "Like the Rain," Black's number 1 record from a few years back, he brings in fellow artist Steve Wariner to sing backup on what is the most poetic intricate ballad Black has had ever written. This multiple-CMA winner's use of the rain metaphor over the development of a couple's relationship from its blissful start to its tumultuous times is just stellar. As hinted by "Like the Rain," not everything is maudlin, so the less romantic at heart need not fret. "My Imagination," for instance, finds Black daydreaming about an unattainable lover that possesses a heartbreaking tenor that is just so bittersweet.
Of the hat-wearing alumni of the 90s, though Clint Black has made his mark, but he's often overlooked as a singer of songs that deal with the heart. Things are about to change with this new CD. With these songs so packed wih depth and emotions, Black has done himself, his fans and Cupid real proud.

Clint Black eventually lost the head-to-head race with Garth Brooks to be the new-country king of the '90s. But this impressive 16-song collection of hits and near-misses culled from Black's half-dozen studio albums and padded with four fair-to-middlin' new songs makes you wonder if the world wouldn't have been better off if Black had won that race. These tracks (all of them written or cowritten by Black and many also produced by him) remind us that in the decade and a half or so since he first hit the charts, he's been a far more adventurous songwriter and stylist than Brooks has ever been. That said, there's a fair amount of chaff mixed with the wheat herein. Many of the newer songs--like "When I Said I Do" (a hit duet with his wife, actress Lisa Hartman), "Little Pearl" (Black's sentimental ode to his new baby daughter), and the cliché-ridden "Money or Love"--tend to drown in either mawkish sentimentality or Black's irritating lyric verbosity. But masterful tracks like "Been There" (a fine duet with Steve Wariner), the swingy "One More Payment," the soulful "(The Lights Are On) Nobody's Home," and an impressive blues version of his 1990 hit "Put Yourself in My Shoes" (featuring a full horn arrangement) remind us how very good Black can be when he's hitting on all cylinders. --Bob Allen
Customer Reviews:
outstanding.......2006-11-04
I was a little disappointed when Clint left some of his songs off his first Greatest Hits album, but was elated when he included them on this great album. I think he is a terrific singer. I have also met him, and he was awesome in person and performance too. "Nobody's Home," "Walkin' Away," "Nothing's News," and "One more Payment" are some of the outstanding songs on this equally outstanding album. If you enjoy Clint's music, you will not be disappointed by this album. I have never regretted buying it.
A voice of contradiction.......2005-04-15
The review provided by Amazon states that Clint Black lost the race to Garth Brooks as the dominant male country singer of the 90's. But as we all know, in the music industry, true success is a marathon, not a sprint. Garth may have dominated for a few years, but he burned out and went into semi-retirment while Clint keeps plugging along.
The reviews also tend to say that the duets bog down this CD. I prefer the duets. Especially those with wife Lisa Hartman Black. I have been a fan of hers since the short-lived TV show "Tabitha" back in the 70's. When she became a regular on "Knots Landing" in the 80's, I loved it when she would sing on the show. I don't know why her recording career never took off, but I love both of her duets with Clint. In fact, it is mainly because of those 2 duets (plus the duet with Martina McBride) that I bought this CD. The duets between Clint and Lisa and their accompanying videos mean even more because they are a real couple and they truly mean the words they are saying. These are not like some "super star" duets where the 2 people on the record never even met and the vocals were recorded at different times and then mixed together in the studio. This is 2 people who are truly in love.
Anyway, I recommend this CD for those duets. I only give it 3 stars because the other songs are good, but not my favorites. I really and truly only LOVE those 3 duets.
The song, 'Been There'!!!!! AAAAAGGGHHHHHH!!!!.......2004-09-28
I really hate the song, 'Been There'. I have horrendous memories of sitting on the schoolbus while our bus driver played this song at full blast, and even after many years of not having ridden on that godforsaken bus, that terrible song has never quite left my mind. It is absolutely the worst song I ever heard in my entire life and whoever likes it should get their head checked. Seriously! I'd listen to NSYNC before I would ever listen to this horrible song, and I despise boybands! I hope that song's no longer on the air, because it really, really, really sucks. And, unfortunately, the fact that it can get stuck in your head just might drive you insane.
Avoid.
Some good songs.......2003-02-12
If you want the best of Clint, buy Killin' Time. Its really the only Clint Black that is essential, even though several other CDs of his are very good. The first Greatest Hits cd is good but left off several number one hits in order to justify a second greatest hits cd. And this is it. No suprise, the "A" material here is from Killin' Time (songs that should have been on the first greatest hits cd) and a few good ones from Tailights. The rest is average. The duets, as with most country male-female duets, are focused more on sappy lyrics than good music. This is a good cd but far from his best.
More Of The Best Of Black!.......2002-04-14
I have always thought that Clint Black was above a lot of other country artists that he has been lumped with over the years,or of any artist to come out of the genre in years. He has a real country twangish voice, strong lyrics, and very melodic songs. His first greatest hits was a magnificent album. Perfect in every way. This one is almost as perfect, but not quite. This new set includes three hits from his first album "Killin' Time" in 1989 that were omitted from his first greatest hits set. Here you get "Walkin' Away", "Nobody's Home", and "Nothings News". All great traditional country classics. The rest is a mix of real country songs and some of Clint's more rocking/pop songs that he has done in the last few years. His most recent duets with wife Lisa Hartman Black on "When I Said I Do", and good friend Steve Wariner on the great "Been There", are here. Also included is his pretty duet with Martina McBride called "Still Holding On". Two of my favorites, "Nothin' But The Tailights" and "The Shoes Your Wearing" are included as well. The reason this set isn't as great as the first is that some of these songs are pretty light. There's nothing wrong with that at all, but they don't hold up for very long like some others. The three new songs here are a mixed bunch. Clint tries to do another duet with his wife on the anemic and bland "Easy For Me To Say". The magic that made their first duet a pretty song is entirely missing on this one. "Money Or Love" is a fun rockin' toe tapper in the way that only Clint can do it. Many reviewers say this song is as cliched as they come. So?. It has words, it has a beat, he sings, it does it's job. End of story. The last new song is a song for his new baby called "Little Pearl". It is, of course, a fantastic song.... I hate it when people get irritated when an artist writes something sweet and special for a loved one. Isn't doing that one of the best things about writing a song?. The song is gorgeous and sweet with adorable lyrics. Clint is a brilliant lyricist. He's an incredible musician and performer. There is no one else like him. Sure, Mr. Black has strayed a little from his roots, but who cares?. It's all about the music. He's just doing what he does best and we can't thank him enough for it. Looking forward to more great music from this man in black.

Customer Reviews:
EASTWOOD IS ALSO A GREAT SONGWRITER.......2007-06-11
This is a "semi" career spanning CD (and the only decent one in existence) of the movie themes from some great Eastwood movies. The earlier pieces are from his days in TV and transition to movies. The more mature work with Lennie Niehaus displays Clint's artistry, no not only as an actor, award winning director, but great composer. My only complaint is the disc is missing the off-beat and totally original jazzy "Just A Closer Walk With Thee" from THE GAUNTLET.
The disc does contain his wonderful A PERFECT WORLD and THE UNFORGIVEN. Why Eastwood never won an Oscar for some of his original scores is a mystery to me. He is more celebrated as a director than as an actor only because he won more awards in that category and his acting style was known for it's low-keyed and reactionary style. But the Clint Eastwood the musician cannot be dismissed and here is that more than proves his versatility. A known jazz lover, for fans of that genre, give a listen to WHY SHOULD I CARE from "True Crime", another great Eastwood composition.
The remainder of the disc is a salute to Eastwood and his work with a heavy emphasis on the jazz.
First rate. I've been a fan since his directoral debut in PLAY MISTY FOR ME. Little did I realize what a great composer he would turn out to be.
A must for any fans as there are no single soundtacks available from his movies featuring his work.
Play Misty For Me.......2005-12-20
Nearly an hour and 20 minutes of "Music For the Movies of Clint Eastwood". What fan wouldn't be happy with this CD? 23 Tracks, and a great compilation. From the early TV days, the "Theme from Rawhide"(this was about the time I fell in love with Clint, I think I was about 8)performed by Frankie Lane, and Spaghetti Western, the "The, Good, The Bad, and The Ugly"(does anyone REALLY know the words to this one, and does it really matter?)to the romantic Doe Eyes"(the love theme from "Bridges of Madison County", the music will have you reliving the great moments from great films that just say Clint!
The first half of the album features both Clint's own works and the fabulous talented composers he has worked with. Ennio Moricone's oh so recognizable style("The Good, The Bad and the Ugly"), the moving music of Lennie Niehaus("Pale Rider"), the haunting sounds from Lalo Schfrin("Dirty Harry Theme", where you will relive Clint doing the, "Do you feel lucky punk?" speech), and some other wonderful musicians including the great Civil War and Western sounding "Theme from Outlaw Josey Wales", by Jerry Fielding, and Erroll Garner's"Play Misty For Me", a gorgeous piano rendition. Some of Clint's own works, included are "Claudia's Theme" from "Unforgiven" "Kate's Theme" from "Absolute Power", "Big Fran's Baby" from "A Perfect World", and of course the mesmerizing and above mentioned "Doe Eyes".
Second half is a 10 part instrumental suite, "Clint Eastwood, An American Filmmaker Suite". This is music composed and conducted by Lennie Niehaus for the PBS "American Masters" documentary " Eastwood: Out of the Shadows" The music tells Clint's story musically, and it flows beautifully and emotionally. It has a little of everyting, including some great jazzy numbers. The orchestration and the musicians capture the journey wonderfully. For list of all 23 track titles, see buying info. You can also listen to samples from there.
The quality of the CD is excellent. A pamphlet with some production notes, and the tracks is included. There are some great pix of Clint as well. It doesn't have ALL his films included. Hopefully the music form "Kelly's Heroes"("Burning Bridges) and "The Beguiled"(more from Lalo Schifrin) will make the sequel album!
Take it in your car and listen to it when you are stuck in traffic, and it will take you somewhere else for a while.Just say "Play Misty For Me" and hit track 8. Highly recommended for the Eastwood fan. And for those that can't get enough, I would also recommend the soundtrack to "Bridges of Madison County". One of the most romantic albums I ever heard.
"Head 'Em Up, Move 'Em On....Keep Them Doggies Rollin...Rawhide!"
Enjoy....Laurie
"Go ahead, make your day!".......2004-06-21
There's really not too much to say about this, except that any big fan of "Clint Eastwood", or at least the majority of these movies should like this. What I enjoy most are the tracks from his westerns, as they all set a nice mood, but the rest are very good as well. I can't help but think this would have been twice as good had it contained dialogue from each of these films too. Overall a great collection for the fan. After all, if there's one thing "Clint" knows about as much as his acting, it's his music.
