On their debut album, 1999's Something About Airplanes, Death Cab for Cutie proved there's a reason why Northwest music critics continue to sing their praises. The foursome combined the emo sounds of Modest Mouse and 764-Hero with an inventive, and often sly, sentimentality. It worked wonders, but still sounded a little too lo-fi. Luckily, on We Have the Facts and We're Voting Yes the group has figured out all the production nuances that flawed that auspicious debut. The opening "Title Track" begins by sounding both crappy and shallow, but the band is merely pulling your leg; two minutes later, the tune expands into a gorgeous, well-produced masterpiece. The album never looks back. Ben Gibbard's songwriting continues to evolve--"Company Calls" segues into, what else, the slower "Company Calls Epilogue"--while the simple lyrics of "For What Reason" and "405" tell infectious stories that demand repeated listenings. Proof positive the Northwest is still churning out great music. --Jason Verlinde

Album Description

A delicious and head-sticking mix of drummer Ben Gibbard's heartbreaking vocal melodies and reflective lyrics of transition and loss, punctuated by energized and beautiful playing from Chris Walla and Nick Harmer. Barsuk Records.

(Editor's Note: Article written by son, Trevor.)

Being a giant fan of Death Cab For Cutie, this was my fifth album by them (sixth, if you count Directions.) I would have to say, this would be my favorite album by them. Everything this band has put out I have been thoroughly impressed by, but something about this one will make you listen to it over and over. The best way to describe it is to go through every song.

1. From the moment you start it, "Title Track" will bring pleasure to your ears. While it is a simple song, something about it you fall in love with. The muffled effect in the beginning and the transition to a clarity after the first chorus adds great effect to the song. However, after about ten or fifteen listens, this song will lose appeal. [4/5]

2. "The Employment Pages" is probably my favorite song on the album. You can listen to this song on repeat for hours, and you'll never tire of it. Though it does have a very slow tempo, the simplicity of the vocals and complexity of the music is an impressive blend. [5/5]

3. "For What Reason" does not particularly stand out in the album, but is none the less a great song. I do agree with some people who said that alot of the songs on this album sound the same, for this and the next track I always mix up. However, it is a great up-tempo tune after "The Employment Pages". I love the effects used on the song. [5/5]

4. One of the catchiest, if not the catchiest song on the album. "Lowell, MA" is a track that no matter what mood you're in will make you grin. The chorus will be immediately drilled into your head the first time you hear it. Melodic guitar riffs and an interesting drum beat make the musical aspect of the song more appealing as well. [5/5]

5. I would say that "405" is the most over-produced song on the album. Though I've never heard it live, I imagine it would be much better, for it would lack all of the studio effects. It is a good song, but needs a better peak as well. [4/5]

6. "Little Fury Bugs" brings the tempo of the album back down at the right time. I would say it is the softest song on the album. The vocals have an odd sound over the single guitar that lasts about half-way through the song, yet it sounds great. When the drums come in, it definitely adds some more interest to the song. Smooth transition to the next song. [5/5]

7. When "Company Calls" builds after the segway of "Little Fury Bugs", you will feel replenished. It opens up the true second half of the album after a breakdown. Melodic guitar riffs stand out particularly, as this song is a great display of the entire band's instrumental skill. The vocals soar easily over, especially during the chorus. The buildups and breakdowns of the bridge are amazing. [5/5]

8. "Company Calls Epilogue" is a lyrical continuation of "Company Calls." However, the musical composition will remind you strongly of "Title Track" and "Little Fury Bugs", but not in a good way. It seems a repetition of past songs. However, the mellow music during the vocal build of the chorus adds a nice effect. [4/5]

9. "No Joy In Mudville" is an extremely unique song. Though the longest song on the album, and maybe the slowest, it fails to bore. The drums are extremely simplistic, but have a catchy beat, and are probably the shining strengh of the song. The building guitar and use of what sounds to be a xylophone adds, as to make a song you've never quite heard anything like before. The lyrics tell an amazing emotional tale of the desire to leave and start in a new town in upstate (assumably, New York.) My personal favorite. [5/5]

10. The end of the album. The volume swells add a great sound to the song. The vocals are great. I love the lyrics, as well."Scientist Studies" truly brings the album to a great close. Instead of leaving you mellowed and depressed, the album's end makes you grin, and give you the urge to hit that play button one more time. [5/5]

Overall, We Have The Facts and We're Voting Yes is in my opinion the best album Death Cab For Cutie has ever put out. For other true Death Cab For Cutie fans, I'd also recommend Transatlanticism. Not quite a similar album, but it is truly amazing. Comparable songs on it would be "Expo '86" and "The New Year". If you're looking for new Death Cab For Cutie, buy that. Or, if you're a fan of those songs on Transatlanticism, buy this album. As lead vocalist and guitarist Ben Gibbard played drums on all songs but "The Employment Pages" and "Company Calls Epilogue", I would say he is the best drummer the band has ever had. His skill far surpasses the previous drummer who quit during the early sessions of the album. If you are a musician such as myself into a more mellow, but still complex style of music, this album will be influential on your writing. Just to clarify though, this is not an "emo" album, and if you are buying it expecting it to be, it is not at all. Also, if you're looking for new music of similar styles, I'd recommend you check out Straylight Run and Elliott Smith. Hope this review helped you!

while i love transatlanticism and plans. i feel they are great for a band that is evolving musically. we have the facts however is by far my favorite release from the immortal death cab for cutie. songs like For What Reason and Title Track leave me with a twinkle in my eye its the two Company Calls songs that bring this album home. i see far too many reviews from people that are comparing this album to plans and the truth is that while plans is a great album. we have the facts makes that album look like top 40 garbage

5 out of 5 stars it's too bad this is receiving less than 5 stars.......2006-07-18

This band continues to impress and amaze me even though I have already listened to all of their albums. When I first listened to this album, I could have agreed with the somewhat negative reviews, but now I wouldn't have anything to do with them. The more you listen to Death Cabs CDs the more you will come to understand and respect the group and their work.

3 out of 5 stars Really Good Background Music, But Not Much More.......2006-07-16

This was my second Death Cab cd after Transatlanticism (third if you count Give Up). After those two masterpieces (Transatlanticism especially), I was expecting great things from We Have the Facts. As you can tell from my 3 star rating, I was somewhat disappointed.

I really like "Title Track" and "Company Calls Epilogue" but those are the only songs that really stick out at all for me. All the songs sound way too similar. The vocals are less clear than in their other albums, which hides Death Cab's greatest strength: Ben Gibbard's lyrics, which I barely notice here, but that might just be because I haven't listened to this album nearly as much as their others, and also because it's very easy to stop paying attention to We Have the Facts because the music is so similar and slow that it's easy to forget there's even music playing.

Still, this is Death Cab, and the music is pretty good when you're paying attention. Also, this is great background music to listen to while you do something else because it doesnt demand your full attention. But this definitely shouldn't be your first introduction to Death Cab. Transatlanticism is one of the best albums I've ever heard, and Plans is also significantly better than this. But still, We Have the Facts is worth an eventual listen.

3 out of 5 stars Death Cab roots.......2006-05-05

My first exposure to Death Cab was from Plans. Great album. I then moved to Transatlanticism. Another great record. My most recent purchase was this one, We Have The Facts.

On the surface, it's obvious this is Death Cab. Their sound is fairly unique. After several listens, though, I've decided that I definitely like their latest two releases much better.

This is a good album. Check out Title Track, Lowell MA, and Scientist Studies for more of what you love about Death Cab. I think the reason this release doesn't rate higher, though, is that it just doesn't stick out like their later releases.

Many have said that Death Cab has now "sold out". Puh-lease. Just because you sign with a major label, does that imply you have now sold out? I don't buy into that at all. The fact is that Death Cab has matured over the last several years.

If you're a Death Cab fan already, by all means, buy this. If you're not and you're looking for an entry point, you'd probably enjoy Transatlanticism or Plans much more. I do enjoy this, but it's better for background music while I'm working than for pure listening enjoyment. I'm still going to end up buying more of their older stuff, though.

The first Black Box Recorder album, 1998's England Made Me, was originally conceived by Auteurs and Baader Meinhof frontman Luke Haines as a typically baleful response to the cultural and political hysteria--respectively, Britpop and Tony Blair--then gripping Britain. Recorded with the help of former Jesus & Mary Chain drummer John Moore and singer Sarah Nixey, it did for Britpop roughly what the film Carrie did for the senior prom. The Facts of Life, the follow-up, maintains the withering glare but fixes it this time on the personal. The songs here obsess with unnerving clarity and mordant wit on the banal, cruel details of human relationships and are narrated perfectly by Nixey. Where her perfectly English-accented whisper infused England Made Me with the air of a bored aristocrat finding contemptuous amusement in the misery of others, on The Facts of Life she has located an edge of taunting viciousness all the more diabolical for being so understated. The tunes, as ever, are sweet and insidious, perhaps best thought of as Saint Etienne turned feral. Highlights on an album full of them are "English Motorway" and "The Art of Driving"--BBR triumphantly reclaiming the American rock & roll prerogative of the road song for their damp, claustrophobic homeland. The Facts of Life is a masterpiece. --Andrew Mueller

Album Description

Black Box Recorder are an enigma. A three piece comprised of the haunting and fragile-voiced Sarah Nixey, Auteurs henchman Luke Haines and absinthe importer (& former Jesus & Mary Chain) John Moore. Stylistally, the band have catapulted themselves into some netherworld halfway between Air and Velvet Underground. Instruments include, Guitar arpeggios, synthesizers, glockenspiels, chiming xylophones, strings and drum machines. This release features the bonus tracks, 'Start As You Mean To Go Up' and 'Brutality'. Standard jewel case. 2001 release.

5 out of 5 stars Even Sweeter Pills.......2005-04-30

The ironic and cleverly cynical second album by Black Box Recorder captures longing, innocence and evil...beautifully. Maturing from the distinctive "England Made Me" slightly, "The Facts of Life" is a swirling group of songs that were so unashamed to be beautiful...it's terrifying. This is especially true when you consider the subject matter that rides shotgun with the melodies. Black Box Recorder's cynicism is a better actor on "The Facts of Life" than any of their other albums. Where it stood out (and remarkably so) on "England Made Me", it is sewn into the "The Facts of Life's" songs, weaving it's way into every song on the album. Whether it's about teenage kid's sex drive and awkwardness, or people's curious fear of alternative culture to satisfy their shortcomings, it sounds like they're giving lessons to people after shockingly realizing that people don't know or don't care about these things. This is the best way to do it....the formula they use as their song's vehicle is nearly flawless, and the discipline employed here is distinctive because it doesn't sound minimalist, it just makes the entire record consistent. Powered by light drum programming and soft guitars, the music is only complimented by lyrics that are sung effortlessly by switching back and forth from a whisper. Sarah Nixey's voice isn't a powerful thing, but it is soft and pretty, which is why she can make things like "picking up human remains in Notting Hill" sound beautiful enough to soften the blunt and unflinching nature a scene like that would conjure up. Nixey's voice is a perfect translator for Haines and Moore's lyrics because it enters the ear easily enough to get pass the guard that filters out things we would rather do without. This makes Black Box Recorder's songs very accessible. The abundance of the best things about Black Box Recorder found on "The Facts of Life" makes this their definitive record, and also because this kind of disturbing anxiety hadn't been captured this well since Pulp's "A Different Class"

4 out of 5 stars rather awesome mellow-pop-techno blend.......2004-10-21

i like this album quite a bit. songs like the art of driving, sex life, and the facts of life are incredibly quirky and catchy. the lyrics are intriguingly absurd, and also dead on. its different than both ENGLAND MADE ME, and PASSIONA, their other two, also wonderful, cd's. all 3 cd's are worth investing in if you ask me.

5 out of 5 stars Heroic acts in Teenage Sex.......2003-09-12

"The Facts of Life", Black Box Recorder's second album, follows suite in their amazing debut of twisted nursery rhymns, "England Made Me". This is certainly an album to be cherished in one's cd collection - the lyrics are clever and provocative, the music is soothing and intelligent and the mixture can leave the listener awe struck.

In this album, the band has matured a bit. Their storytelling can deliver a much appreciated sense of nostalgia for one's own teenage years - after all, who doesn't remember their boyfriend/girlfriend pushing the relationship one step further than you were ready to go, that almost too-cozy encounter with your highschool best friend or the introspective of a child trying to live as an adult.

Lead singer, Nixey's voice sounds almost like a submissive siren, as she faintly sings anthemns about teenage sexuality and desire. Haines and Moore push their music writing even further, keeping the low tones of instruments and mixing in small beats and rythmns that add a certain liveliness to their melodies. Some of the radio-worthy songs, "Art of Driving" and "Facts of Life", have a good combonation of indie rock/folk with a touch of pop, at the same time expelling the requirements of any particular genre. For those who appreciate rock/pop and alternative music, this will fit in easy to your music collection, though there is enough to interest electronica and folk fans alike.

Out of all the one hit wonders I'm subjected to each morning of my commute - its really nice to have a cd that one can appreciate all the way through.

5 out of 5 stars Definitely not disposable.......2002-05-26

...I describe it as the album Clinic would release once they have Cia Soro as their leadsinger. @ any rate, it is truly a magical album that improves on the sombre debut England Made Me to create a sound & mood that is both indulgent (But nowhere near selfindulgent) & sardonic. Luke Haines & John Moore's lyrics work either as subdued Jarvis Cockeresque narratives ("May Queen", "The Deverell Twins") or as simple, axiomatic observations ("The Art Of Driving", "Weekend", "The English Motorway System", "The Facts Of Life", "Straight Life"):-Combining this with Sarah Nixey's glossy, breathy voice & a minimalist yet chilling electroacoustic backdrop & you have a winner. Make sure you also check out the sleeve where excerpted lyrics from all of the songs (But the titletrack) are displayed as seriocomic balloons in awkward situations:- Very much in the style of Pulp.

Oh, & my personal favourite is "Sex Life", thanks for asking.

There's nothing soft or fuzzy about this aptly titled album; even without a drummer, the choppy mandolin and guitar chords propel the music forward relentlessly. Whether describing the murderous "Henry Walker" or a hard-working "Loggin' Man," Del McCoury sings in a roughened, high, lonesome tenor that scrubs all the sentimentality off such subjects. When he sings about marital infidelity on Robert Cray's "Smoking Gun" or Ronnie's title tune, Del lets the raw moment of realization cut through his voice. Even when he tackles Ray Price's honky-tonk "I'll Be There" or Tom Petty's folk-rock "Love Is a Long Road," Del gives them the starkness of an Appalachian culture where the rocky soil and dirt-road isolation leave little margin for error. --Geoffrey Himes

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Hard-Driving Bluegrass.......2001-05-22

Now in his seventies, Del McCoury is one of the few surviving traditionalists from the Bill Monroe school of bluegrass featuring the trademark high lonesome vocal sound. In fact, in the mid-Sixties, McCoury served a stint with the father of bluegrass music as guitar player and lead vocalist in Monroe's Bluegrass Boys.

While McCoury takes a traditionalist's approach to bluegrass, his song selection certainly steps outside the box as shown by his covers of Robert Cray's "Smoking Gun" and Tom Petty's "Love Is a Long Road."

And you won't find a better collection of musicians in bluegrass music. Del's band includes sons Rob (banjo) and Ronnie (possibly the best mandolin player around), Jason Carter (fiddle), Mike Bub (bass) and the best Dobro player on the planet, Jerry Douglas. They all get a chance to shine on Ronnie's instrumental "Baltimore Jonny."

This is hard-driving bluegrass with standout tracks like "Hard on My Heart" and "Snake in the House" and will make a fine addition to your collection. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

5 out of 5 stars real country.......2001-05-17

With the watered-down pop-slick music that's labeled "country" these days, what a joy it is to hear The Del McCoury Band. The musicianship is absolutely astoundingly jaw-dropping good in its perfection, with raw emotion and soul pouring out of each song.

Del's voice, with that "high & lonesome" sometimes raspy sound, has a terrific range of feeling...listen to "Smoking Gun", and another favorite, "Blackjack County Chains", with its weeping fiddle and guitar work, and marvelous melody.

Sadly, the booklet insert doesn't include the lyrics. As Robert Oermann says in it: "Del is particularly noted for choosing dark, almost morbid lyrics and dramatic story songs"...and the songs in this CD have a "bite" and a lot of humor nestled between the hard-luck and "cold hard facts" of life stories.

This CD is true blue Americana art at its finest, and if you like bluegrass, it's a must to own.

5 out of 5 stars This music gets in your blood.......2000-06-21

I find myself humming the tunes on this CD all the time.

This is the CD that introduced me to Del McCoury, recently, even though Gov. Zell Miller of Georgia proclaimed a Del McCoury day, some years ago, for Del's enormous contribution to bluegrass music.

Unfortunately for me, a buddy of mine has borrowed this CD from me and keeps "forgetting" return it. He's not forgetting, he loves the CD as I do and is just too cheap to buy one of his own.

5 out of 5 stars Phenomenal Bluegrass.......1999-11-28

I absolutely LOVE this album. Del McCoury has a high, distinct voice that lends itself perfectly to bluegrass. Top that with flawless musical ability and a great selection of songs and you'll see why this album such a great achievement. My favorites include Snake in the House, Blackjack County Chains, and Love is a long Road (also covered by Tom Petty on his Full Moon Fever Album). Even so, there is not a single poor track on this album. If you enjoy bluegrass, you will Love this album.

4 out of 5 stars still the hardest working man in pop music today...........2007-06-09

i gotta admit, the legends newest album was surprising. the first two albums ('public radio' and 'up against the legends') were spot on imitation, er, odes, to early 80s british guitar bands. they were heavy on the studio effects, new order-esque guitar riffs, and moody atmosphere. they were also incredibly great albums. with three quality bands (acid house kings, club 8, and the legends), it'd be easy for johann to recycle ideas and get stagnant. that he never does is a testament to his songwriting chops.

on his new album, johann's trades his guitars prevelant on the legends' first two offering for keyboards and the resulting album, 'facts and figures,' sounds more like a club 8 record than a legends' record. it's almost an entirely synthesized album and had karolina's vocals appeared, it'd be easy to mistake it for a new club 8 album. for me, this is a beautiful thing as i've always had an affinity for synthesizers (all hail the mighty moog!). on 'facts and figures' johann channels early 80 synth bads like kraftwerk, gary number, depeche, and early OMD albums like 'organisation' and the eponymous l.p.

the songs are exactly what you'd expect them to be: infectious, bright (although there are several minor-chord masterpieces here, kids), well-executed and performed with a lot of vigor. he embellishes the songs with the exactly the right number of blips and bleeps. it's always interesting and never repetitive. i get the impression johann likes nothing better than to lock himself in the studio and pluck away and keyboards day and night. 'facts and figures' is full of great songs, namely 'play for today,' 'darling' (the most club 8-ish song of the lot), 'lucky star,' (no, not a cover of the madonna song), and 'another sunday,' (about the only song that smacks of 'public radio.').

if you're new to the johann angergard world, this is as good a place as any to start. although i have to warn you, once you've had a little johann, you're going to want a LOT more. there's perhaps no finer popsong writer than johann. 'facts and figures' is another feather in his cap.

Fans of tough-to-peg Texans such as Joe Ely and Doug Sahm ought to give this singer and accordion player a good listen. A fixture on the Southern California country and roots-rock scene for the better part of the '80s and '90s, Gaffney stirs up an appealing blend of Bakersfield honky-tonk, soul, garage rock, and conjunto music. The "then some" part of this two-CD set is actually a straight reissue of his cult-classic 1986 debut, The Road to Indio. Gaffney's accordion bounces vibrantly off Gary Brandin's pedal steel while Gaffney's songwriting boasts a knack for clever country wordplay on honky-tonkers like "Don't Let Love Tear Apart (What Lust Has Brought Together)" and "Alcoholidays." Gaffney would actually release two acclaimed Hightone albums during the 1990s before he got to the "live" part of this two-CD set, recorded in March of 1999. The intervening 13 years made Gaffney's already gruff voice that much gruffer though his lighthearted spirit and tangy musical stew remain undiminished. Here he balances nifty originals with covers of Ely, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, and Bill Anderson's defiant "The Lord Knows I'm Drinkin'," a country No. 1 hit for Cal Smith in 1973 and a perfect manifesto for this Tex-Mex twister. --Marc Greilsamer

5 out of 5 stars The Best Bar Band in the World Captured Live.......2000-08-25

Outside of Orange County, California most people don't know who Chris Gaffney is. Actually, there aren't all that many people in Orange County who know much about him either.

THAT'S THEIR LOSS. The Cold Hard Facts are the greatest bar band in the world, and Chris Gaffney is probably the most likeable and best sounding band leader you will ever listen to or see live.

This is a 2-disc set which inlcudes a re-release of a previous album and the other disc is a live recording of the band when it played the Swallow's Inn in San Juan Capistrano, California. The re-release disc is fine, the live disc is one of the best live recordings you will ever hear.

Gaffney plays country, zydeco, Joe Ely-style tex-mex, R&B, you name it. He understands how music can move people on an emotional level. Most of time, the emotion will include a smile on your face, although he can get the tears flowing with songs like 1968. Although you can't characterize the type of music he plays, you can characterize the quality of what he does, and it's impressive.

Buy this record and see him live, especially if he is playing with his close friend and sometimes songwriting partner Dave Alvin.

5 out of 5 stars One of the most talented of our time..........2004-04-30

Asian Dub Foundation are perhaps one of the most innovative and talented groups of this era. Master D's rhythmically cound lyrics show a distinct style, along with chandrasonic's trippy eastern guitar riffs and Dr Das' drum n' bass-like bass beats. Almost every song they produce is a pleasure to listen to.
i would buy this album immediatley if i didn't have it, along with their other albums.

4 out of 5 stars ADF's Brilliant But Often Forgotten Debut.......2003-02-08

"Facts and Fictions" was originally released in 1995 and when it came out, sounded like nothing else. Because critics couldn't categorize it, ADF's debut was soon forgotten as most of England was lost in a euphoric haze of MOR Brit Pop. This is a true shame because "Facts and Fictions" clearly foreshadows the birth of ADF's incredible vision. Musically the album combines many diverse styles including early jungle/drum and bass, hip hop, Bengali folk music, hindi filmi, bhangra and good guitar Brit pop, to name a few. There is also an unmistakable Bengali culture stamp throughout the album (two of the members are of Bengali background...Aniruddha Das, A/K/A Dr. Das and Deedar Zaman A/K/A Master D, who incidentally is the younger brother of Sam Zaman of State of Bengal fame). The brilliant "Rebel Warrior" (later to be re-recorded on "Community Music") which was influenced by one of the most famous poems of the great Bengali renaissance man Nazrul Islam (second only to Tagore) ends with a call for unity amongst Hindus and Muslims...truly the greatest issue facing Bengalis today. On the track "Strong Culture" there's also a shout out to Bangladesh...a musical first! But one of the most impressive statements on the album which foreshadows ADF's future brilliance in combining very diverse musical tapestries to create a sonic masterpiece is "Tu Meri". Starting out with some Indian samples, it breaks out into a tight early 90's hip hop attack. By the second half of the track thanks to the highly innovative Chandrasonic (Steve Chandra Savale), we get into a riff of what Brit Pop should sound like, then it is juxtaposed with a Sarangi sample...if this isn't ADF at work, I don't know what is. All the raw ingredients of ADF are on this album, the lyrics, the strong and very successful musical experimentation, and the early stages of Master D's rapping (who was still only 15/16 when ADF recorded this one). "...it's an education, the sounds of the Asian Dub Foundation" ...true dat!
