Hey roots fans! Been looking for the dubs to Me & Jane and Keep It In The Family? Here they are; contained in the bonus tracks. Awoah! The original album is fairly sedate by Scientist standards, but when you've got him mixing down the Radics from reggae's golden age, well...

A nice little package, all in all...When Scientist runs into the Roots Radics on Maxfield Avenue, you know there's going to be trouble. It takes a while for things to really kick off...the first part of the program is characterised by some solid, though not particularly challenging dub excursions. It's the final five "bonus" cuts that really ignite; Scientist neatly sidesteps Tubby's long dub shadow and turns in a series of dubs that are all his own. So, at the end of the day, a worthwhile investment. Thanks to those folks down in St.Louis at Sound System for bringing this one to the light of day...

    Album Description

    I man don't want to watch no TV, I man wanna listen to a Dub LP! So says Ranking Dread on his debut dub album.

    Originally released in 1982 this Dub LP has gained cult status due in part to the fantastic cover art of Rod Vass.

    To some this is THE DUB album by which all others should be measured. It's hard for us to be objective about that statement but when you hear the incredible mixes from King Tubby I am sure that you will have to think about it too.

    King Tubby takes ridims laid by Sly and Robbie and injects them with a power that screams "this is a Tubbys mix" . The masterful use of echo and reverb that goes to the outer edge of dub yet never loses control. Check out the stellar mix of Bob Marleys "I Don't Want To Wait In Vain".

    There were five tracks to a side on the original LP and the reissue LP is an exact copy of the original with King Tubby and Sly & Robbie on the A side with apprentice Scientist and Roots Radics doing the honors on side B .

    Scientist flexes his muscles on Side B (LP) track 6 on the CD with an absolutely incredible show of echo control on the opening drum sequence, this track I play over and over. Each track showing that the Master had passed on his skills to his protégé and apprentice, then you get to one of the gems, a crucial rendition of "No No No". Not to be missed…

    There were only 1,000 pressed in 1982 and very rarely do they surface to the buying public. This release will give everyone the opportunity to have their own copy and play it till it's worn out…

    I've had the pleasure of enjoying this album for many years, now it's your turn…

    The good Steve Barrow of Blood and Fire gave me this album at the end of last year, and it has its fair selection of cold, hard, quasi avant garde gems to discover.

    It is somewhat of an anachronism in some regards : it is presented as an early to mid 80's Scientist album -- but it sounds like a year 2007 studio engineer has reworked certain tones and frequencies.

    The latter sounds a dodgy proposition -- but far from it. It works beautifully, rendering the bass tones crackling, fractured, and icy, transforming what sound like rather predictable Scientist dubs into something powerfully atmospheric.

    The album opens with "Roots Radics World Dub" -- a "more fire" brimstone chant ( from Capleton ?) is spliced and mangled by the bass tones, before Style Scott's snares avalanche into the mix.

    "Moon Dub" is a tranquil dissolving affair, with a rewind weaving it's way throughout the structure of the song, whilst snares , pianos and cymbals dissolve all around the bass. The tune sounds like Dub Syndicate's much under rated "One Way system" album.

    Many of the other tunes sound like rough Greensleeves 12's, or like the Groucho Smykle produced "Sly and Robbie a Dub Experience" album.

    It isn't all top notch -- there are some fairly predictable workouts here too, amongst the gems, but no doubting it, there are some raw and atmospheric dubs on the record. The album profiles the Radics drum and bass team on good form.

    It is also worth noting here that Jah Thomas' albums on Silver Kamel released over the last two years featured some jazz horns work outs and some digital ambience, and are also equally strong quality selections.

    King Tubby is one of the reggae/Dub masters. This prodigious offering by KT cannot be described in words. A little heavier on the traditional dub beats than some of his other albums but overall another great KT offering. I however cannot call it my favorite because I like all of his albums. So pick this one up today and you won't be dissapointed.

              This set shows Tubby and Jah Screw mixing Roots Radics rhythms in a stark, dry, bass-heavy style. Judicious use of echo and the most subtly mutating snare-reverb effects of any Tubby production necessitate a careful listen that rewards with mindblowing intensity. If you like your dub busy with garish effects, this might not be the set for you. But if you crave mashing bass and dub as a fine art, this is as good as it gets.
