Nearly 25 years after its formation, Megadeth is making its most brilliant work, a feat that some acts find unthinkable--maybe impossible--after half that time. When Mustaine sings about politics it's never in the abstract, faraway sense; his lyrics are riddled with references to the here and now--the boundaries and bombs that make the threat of war--or the threat of doom-- real. So it's no real surprise that this release features lyrics liberally peppered with references to Afghanistan, 9/11, NATO and the like.
Of course, no one buys a record or a ticket to a show specifically to hear five-minute polemics and that's where Mustaine's real talent--a talent for creating ear-perking riffs and solid, carefully constructed songs--comes in. The album may require that you read the newspaper on a regular basis but it also allows you to let loose with abandon and excitement. "Never Alone... a Call to Arms," "Gears of War" and "Play for Blood" are remarkable because they recall the classic metal of Judas Priest, Diamond Head, and the like and prove that there's nothing quite like an overdriven boogie-based riff to excite the most primitive impulses in the listener. Mustaine makes a bid for commercial radio by revisiting Youthanasia's "A Tout Le Monde (Set Me Free)" with Lacuna Coil's Cristina Scabbia. It's his most emotionally honest vocal performance to date and one that will no doubt finally earn him wider critical recognition. --Jedd Beaudoin

The Megadeath realse United Abominations is great!! it has awesome sound and great song writing if you like metal this is a must have
Disappointed Again.......2007-07-11
I really wanted to love this cd but once again it's "Megadeth Lite." Dee Dee, Dunk, Dee Dee Dee, Dunk Dunk. Dave's rythms are absolutely boring. I only got thru about five songs - tell me the good stuff is to come. I am a huge M fan but for several cds Dave seems obssesed with just singing and singing and singing. Meanwhile, the guitar just drones on and on and on. The rythm guitar is just lame. M has turned into melodic metal; a power metal band. He repeats himself over and over again in his vocals. For the past several cds the songs just sound the same over and over again. There is no FIRE. And we want it so badly we keep coming back. The M we love made their point with lyrics and then put there heads down and PLAYED. Dave, I have complete respect for you - but write a book! You have all these things you want to say and they need to be heard but not with kick A$$ metal! You are so busy getting your point across there is no MUSIC. Say what you have to say and then let the band pound!!! There is no urgency to this music, no BALLS. I am not a musician but it just sounds like the same old boring thing M has been putting out - one Bridge after another. This is NOT heavy metal; it's melodic metal M unfortunately has been offering for some time. It's like Dave is just very tired. And I hate to write this review.
Finally a Album that provokes some thought!.......2007-07-10
In a world of fabricated reality based TV artist and cookie monster metal bands Megadeth answers the call!
United Abominations is thought provoking like only Dave Mustaine can invoke with intelligent lyrics of the current state of the U.N. and the world as a whole and with shredding metal riffs, guitar solos's and musicianship,I haven't heard for lord knows how long!
Dave has resurrected Megadeth with a new line up that is sounding tighter than ever before.
When Dave made his last move with the lineup and signed James Lomenzo to play bass was icing on the cake this band shreds!
I look for big things down the road for this latest version of Megadeth it is refreshing to see them back in the game and at the top of their game!
For all us droogies life couldn't get any sweeter.
United in Boredom .......2007-07-10
I have nothing against politics in music. Even with many of Dave's opinions contradicting many of mine, and some of them even seeming outright confusing, it should have no bearing on the music. In fact, some great bands have mixed a satirical or political message in the music, examples are everyone from The Dead Kennedy's to Frank Zappa to Queensryche to the Beatles.
Theres also nothing wrong with his being Christian. Many of the greatest metal artists of all time are or were.
However, in those previously mentioned examples, the politics and message are broadcast in such a way that it doesn't interfere with the great music those bands made.
Contrasting this are bands like Ratm, the messsage getting whiny and tiresome at times, and the new Megadeth is another band that seems to have not learned the lesson of putting politics in music the right way, at least this time around. Some of these songs vocals are so annoying, that I almost had to turn off the album in the middle of listening to it.
Enough about politics though. On to the music. This album is truly a letdown from The System Has Failed. It seems like that album highlighted Chris Poland, and even the "session players" like Vince Colaiuta seemed to bring that album up a notch. Also, the songwriting was sharp, and on THAT album Dave seemed to play with a passion that hadn't been seen since Rust in Peace or Countdown.
However on this album, many of the songs recycle riffs from one another, the sterile production and mechanical sounding drums (not to mention bland leads) make it seem like it could have been recorded by anyone (and I thought that Dave + The Drovers and others= A real band now?)
Overall it was a horrible disappointment. I don't think Dave + Co are done with playing good shows or being a good band, but this album was a real letdown. I was very bored throughout.
Metal Album of the Year.......2007-07-02
Let me start off with I havent been excited for a release of a cd in quite a while. But I could not sleep the night before this cd came out.
Woke up very early and went to get this.
The opening Sleepwalkers: was the first to be blasted in the car on the way home from the purchase The riffs in that song are amazing and very skilled yet catchy. Catchy and difficult riffs thats hard to come by
Washington is Next: Probably my second favorite on this cd this is a great track again with insane riffs. Great lyrics
Never Walk Alone... A Call To Arms the catchyest track on the cd other than ATLM the chorus is what gets ya
United Abominations: in my opinion the best track on the cd. Lyric wise I would say it defintly is Dave taking shots at the world and political idiots controlling the world, and agianst the UN, what is that any way ? Song is very inspirational and gets you pumped up. "The UN is right they cant be any more UN than they are right now ... " LMAO great line Kind of makes you wonder if our allies are really our allies !!!
Gears of War: great track another political stance
Blessed our the dead: Apocalypse
Play for Blood: catchy not one of my favorites but good non the less
ATLM (Set ME Free) A faster pace than the original released on Youthanasia released in 1994 with the added vocals , this makes a great and suprising track on the cd
Amerikastan; another favorite of mine some great riffs in hear
You'Re Dead: good track not a favorite of mine however
Burnt Ice: another solid track
The Drover bro's are a really great edition to this cd. lets hope that they last and Dave doesnt get sick of his cast again
This better win Metal album of the year

A surprise hit in 2004 and 2005, this Atlanta-based threesome arrived on the scene at precisely the right time--when country trios (Dixie Chicks, Rascal Flatts, and to a lesser extent, Trick Pony and SheDaisy) had proved themselves in the marketplace. Like those acts, Sugarland trade on solid and sometimes intricate harmonies and a killer lead vocalist. In this case, the full-tilt Jennifer Nettles plays Natalie Maines to Kristen Hall and Kristian Bush's Emily and Martie. And while it would be lovely to hear another member of the trio out front occasionally, Nettles, a deep-dish Southerner who knows no one-syllable words ("air" is "aye-er"), is a commanding presence. Stylistically, the group mixes it up, from the folk-rock of Hall and Bush's backgrounds to the driving pop that dominates much of contemporary country radio; thematically, the songs largely revolve around restlessness, the need to escape restrictions and find one's self, and the faith that things will work out. "Baby Girl," the hit about an itinerant musician writing home for money and emotional connectedness, is but one of several surefire winners here, which include "Something More," a mid-tempo quest for a more meaningful life, and "Tennessee," in which a radio request line rescues true love. The quieter songs ("Fly Away," "Hello") are no less well written and affecting, even as the barnburning "Down in Mississippi (Up to No Good)," about housewife ennui and riverboat gambling, falls embarrassingly flat. Does this triad have staying power? Well, just as their name implies, they're a little too sweet to equal the Chicks' gravitas, but there's no denying they've got energy to burn. --Alanna Nash

Favorite.......2007-07-07
Of Course I have been listening to Jennifer since she was the lead singer in Soul Miner's Daughter, Bluesy and fun. This one is great. She's all grown up and the quality of her music just keeps getting better. When I'm having a bad day this is a great pick-me-up.
Now this is a good album!.......2007-06-13
This album is amazing. I enjoy every song on it. Several of them are radio hits, and several more should be. My favorite song is "Hello," one of the more mellow songs. There are plenty of fast-paced and mid-tempo songs, too. If you like "Something More," "Baby Girl," and "Just Might (Make Me Believe)," I promise you will like the rest of the album too.
You Made US Love YOU!!.......2007-05-06
Saw the trio with friends at the Coffee and Wine Bar in Cave Creek, AZ and swooped in on the CD - now we are hooked and play it all the time. I'm not too into Country, but love every song on this CD-A keeper in my book!!
Jennifer Nettles Shines.......2007-04-16
This CD shines with Jennifer Nettles in the lead! She has a bluesy realistic yet edgy voice that is separable from all of the newer country stars- I truly believe she will become a legend. Down In Mississippi (Up To No Good) is my personal favorite as it is an energetic "get the party started" Southern gal anthem!

Called "the Black Album" by many (due to its monochrome cover), Metallica marks the group's entrance into the mainstream, with shorter songs, simpler song structures, and slower tempos overall. That said, this is an excellent album, featuring some of the best songwriting Metallica has ever done. "Enter Sandman," "Wherever I May Roam," and "God That Failed," despite being slower and more groove-oriented than the band's earlier work, feature the same heavy riffs and heavier rhythms that have always been a feature of Metallica's music. The band goes introspective with "Unforgiven," and proves that they can write a ballad with "Nothing Else Matters," which succeeds better than one might expect. Overall, this is a high-energy album despite its laid-back approach, and is in many ways superior to the previous . . . And Justice for All, which was weakened by overly complicated song structures and mediocre production. -- Genevieve Williams

A Five Star Experience.......2007-07-09
There is certainly much debate amongst Metallica fans, especially the original fans, as to the greatness of this CD. Though it may not be as raw as the earlier CDs, it is one heck of a great rock and roll album. The CD is full of one great song after another. My personal favorite is Wherever I may Roam. Had this been Metallica's only CD/Album, they would have been considered a success. One of the greatest live bands of all time show there skills on this excellent 5 star CD.
metallica rules.......2007-07-06
There is no question WHY this CD was on the billboard charts for so long. Some say they sold out when they made this CD but, you have to appreciate Metallica for constantly changing. This is a killer CD.
Highly entertaining.......2007-06-13
Wow! What a great CD this is by my favorite heavy metal band. This is by far their best after 1988's ...And Justice For All, 1986's Master Of Puppets, and 1984's Ride The Lightning.
Enter Sandman: What an intro and by far my favorite Metallica song ever after 'For Whom the Bell Tolls' and one of my favorite songs of ALL TIME! Excellent.
Sad But True: Great song but not a favorite.
Holier Than Though: Brilliant.
The Unforgiven: The best Metallica ballad rocker after 'Fade to Black'.
Wherever I May Roam: This is one great song and one of their best songs ever!! James sings excellent in this song!!
Don't Tread On Me: Brilliant and LAUGHABLE.
Through the Never: This album's second best to Enter Sandman.
Nothing Else Matters: Possibly the weakest song on this album and still pretty good. This is a ballad that I have never cried during it.
Of Wolf and Man: Pretty good lyrics and music!
The God That Failed: Been a fan to this song for a while. This song has excellent singing and lyrics.
My Friend of Misery: One of the album's best. Certainly the longest on tha album about 7 excellent minutes of great music.
Struggle Within: One of the best closers in metal.
Please get this CD. This CD is definately what every rock fan should own. Get this with RTL, MOP, and ...AJFA which are great albums too. Metallica rocks.
Is it Metallica, or the Black Album?.......2007-06-01
The actual title for this one is "Metallica," but all the fans call it "The Black Album." This might be Metallica's most controversial album besides "St. Anger." This album marks a concerted departure of the band from complex song structures and the like. Because the sound is so simple throughout the album many have taken to call this "pop" metal. I think that is a rash judgment, though. Sure, the songs are simpler than on Metallica's previous effort, "...And Justice for All." But, this album might be one of their heaviest overall. It is certainly Metallica's most popular album, having sold more than 14 million. I don't think this album measures up to the greatness that was "Master of Puppets," but then there are few albums in the history of metal that do that.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. Enter Sandman - it would be hard to find people in either America or Europe, and probably other parts of the world, who have not heard "Enter Sandman." It is filled with the furious vocals and powerful riffs that we've come to love this band for. This was the perfect opening song. The song is about a seemingly never ending nightmare. Heavy, heavy, heavy. It begins with a traditional Metallica acoustic intro and leads straight into some of the heaviest metal out there.
I give "Enter Sandman" a 5/5 rating.
2. Sad But True - Even heavier than "Enter Sandman", this song is about reflecting on the contradictions and failures that often make up a person's life. It has one of the heaviest crunches for a main riff that I've ever heard. The song is not as good as the opener and it gets a little boring after much listening. That is the problem with simpler songs. They are easier to sell but the power in them seems to wane after extended play.
This one is a 4.5/5.
3. Holier than Thou - This song tries hard to be a kind of thrash exploit. It doesn't quite make it. The theme centers around dealing with someone who is always judgmental, and never finding fault in themselves. This is a heavy song, though not as heavy as the first two. The advanced metal listener might think this one is at the top of their list from this album. It is a good song, but not great.
I give it a 4/5.
4. Unforgiven - this one is about the mental anguish suffered by a man never allowed to have his moment. It is a blend of acoustic lightness and metal heaviness that fascinates the listener. This song of raging sorrow will get inside you and stay.
It is a clear 5/5.
5. Wherever I May Roam - my favorite song on this album. It has a unique sounding acoustic opening that builds into one of the catchiest metal riffs of all time. Ultimately, this song is about the power of freedom. James Hetfield seems to clearly express his sense of arrival at the pinnacle of rock stardom, and the implicit respect that comes with it. This is one of Metallica's all time best.
Certainly a 5/5.
6. Don't Tread on Me - use of the old American cliche might be either a focus against America's enemies or America's too easy determination to go to war, depending on your point of view of the song. This one is almost as heavy as "Sad But True," and is a very good song. It is a bit repetitive, though, so it can become easily boring after many listens.
4/5
7. Through the Never - perhaps one of the cleverest songs on the album. "Questions pending..." This one is about man's obsession with knowing all there is to know about the physical universe. It could easily be a defense for the Evolution theory and a reproach for those who close their minds rather than try to understand the nature of things. There is a good main riff and the song is not too long. Great metal tune.
4.5/5.
8. Nothing Else Matters - this one is a mostly accoustic song about friendship and comraderie between the band members. It is a good tune, but it is also one of those songs that brought the word "sellout" to the lips of many Metallica fans. While not very heavy, it is a good song that is inspiring, though some of the lyrics are a little cheesy, imo.
4/5.
9. Of Wolf and Man - a great, great song. James Hetfield's raging vocals and primal lyrics really set this song off. The main riff is not as heavy as other Metallica tunes on this album, but the punch of the song is unmistakable. This song is ostensibly about lycanthropy, or werewolves, but it touches base with the wolf in each man.
4.5/5.
10. The God that Failed - this song might be about the loss of Hetfield's mother to cancer when she refused to seek medical treatment because of her beliefs. I've heard this explanation many times but I've never heard it confirmed by Mr. Hetfield. Apparently, God failed to heal his mother when she refused treatment. It is a good song with a solid riff.
4/5
11. My Friend of Misery - a good song about dealing with someone who will not leave you alone to think for yourself. There is nothing but problems. We can all identify with being around someone who just will not let go of their solution for everyone's problems. This song is somewhat bass driven but not too complex. It is very heavy but it is different from the typical metal song. This one was not written to be popular, but observant and brutally truthful. From a depth standpoint this song might be the strongest on the album.
4/5.
12. The Struggle Within - This song should be last because, imo, it is the weak point of the album. I don't really know why Metallica included this one on this album. It seems out of place and a little bit strange. It has always been one of my least favorite songs from Metallica. To be fair, it is heavy and fast and there are bound to be some listeners that enjoy this song very much. I'm just not one of them.
2.5/5.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Metallica's fifth project is a very good one, though just shy of greatness. I give it 5 stars on the weight of the great songs that are on the album. For the initiate Metallica fan either this one, or "Ride the Lightning", is the place to start. If you've never heard this album, or are new to the Metallica experience, then by all means buy this one. It is not as commercialized as some people claim, but it is polished enough to be one of the most enjoyable listens in heavy metal history.
I love it!!.......2007-05-12
It's kind of hip to diss this album to prove that you're a "real fan", but that's just silly. This is obviously a fantastic rock album as anybody should be able to see. The songs are great, memorable and they rock hard. Even the ballads are awesome. In fact, The Unforgiven and Nothing Else Matters are probably my two favorite songs on this album. The Unforgiven is amazing because it sounds Ennio Morricone-inspired and Nothing Else Matters is just a fantastic, heartfelt song. And of course, you have the classic Enter Sandman. I defy anyone to not get the urge to headbang in traffic when this song comes on the radio. If anyone tells you that this ablum is crap, don't listen! Use your ears!

One of the defining albums of thrash metal, Master of Puppets is arguably Metallica's best album (as well as their last with bassist Cliff Burton). Focusing on the concept of power and abuses thereof, this is a collection of complex, intelligent music, played at about a hundred miles an hour. Not that these are short songs; this eight-song album clocks in at over an hour, which makes it all the more impressive that not one moment on this recording is boring. In tackling various approaches to their subject, Metallica is insightful lyrically as well as musically: "Welcome Home (Sanitarium)" is from the point of view of an institutionalized inmate and "Disposable Heroes" is the perspective of a soldier. If all you've heard of Metallica is what's been on the radio recently, check this one out. You're in for a surprise. --Genevieve Williams

A True Thrashterpiece.......2007-07-04
This is one of Metallica best albums ever, I remember buying this album when I was 12 back in '86, I was hooked on Metallica ever since then. The title track is a true classic, but the instrumental "Orion" has been and always will be my favorite song on the album. Great guitar work and melodies make this album pure gold. I hope the next Metallica album can recapture the old school sound, buy this album I highly recommend it!!!
My Review for --- Master of Puppets by Metallica (1986).......2007-06-28
On March 3rd 1986, Master of Puppets was released and it became Metallica's 3rd, best, and the last with the bassist Cliff Burton before his death in September 1986. This is probably James Hetfield's best vocals on this LP. Kirk Hammett may have been played better lead guitar on Metallica's other albums but he still does an excellent job on this LP, man that guy can play guitar. He is just as good as Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page, and David Gilmour. This is a thrash metal classic and this has Battery, Master of Puppets, and my favorite instrumental Orion. Orion was the first instrumental song I have ever heard by any band and is better than The Call of Ktulu and though that was great too. Lars Ulrich does his best drumming on Orion. The title song has a great beautiful ballad style in the fourth minute of the song is what they would call it Maestro down in Mexico and South America. The LP starts out with Battery with a slow Spanish style acoustic guitar intro which was better than Fight Fire with Fire. This is also known as better than their previous record Ride the Lightning which was really great too. Welcome Home (Sanitarium) is a great ballad too, and though Fade to Black was a lot better. The Thing That Should Not Be is probably the slowest song on the LP and For Whom the Bell Tolls was a lot much better. Even though there is a F word on this LP it is still really awesome and is probably my favorite heavy metal record of the 80's.
One of the Greatest Old School Metal CDs!.......2007-06-24
I recently got into Metallica the past few weeks (their old stuff anyway). Ride the Lightning was the first CD I got. After being blown away by it, I didn't possibly think it could get better. I had always heard that MOP was their greatest moment, so I was Excited to recieve it. I thought RTL was going to be my favorite, but wow I was wrong. This is now one of my favorite metal CDs ever. There isn't one dull moment on this CD.
Battery 10/10: This track starts out slow, but then the metal punches you in the stomach and your left breathless. Wow, one hell of an album opener (kind of similar to RTL's Fight Fire With Fire). This song deals with aggression.
Master of Puppets 10/10: This is my personal favorite on the album. This song has the catchiest chorus and a slow, yet beautiful balled section in the middle. This song deals with drug addiction.
The Thing That Should Not Be 8/10: A lot of people bash this song. It is the weakest song on the album, but compared on its own, it's a metal masterpiece.
Welcome Home 9/10: This is the album's balled (still pretty heavy though). It deals with a mental patiant's struggle in an institution. The lyrics shine hear.
Disposable Heroes 10/10: This song is very underrated. This is one of the highlights on the album, imo. It deals with soldiers' strain in battle. The lyrics are perfect, and the chorus is catchy and heavy.
Leper Messiah 9/10: Another underrated song. Some say it's the weak point (but some like me disagree, I still say The Thing That Should Not Be is) on the album. It deals with priests collection contributions to earn a higher seat.
Orion 10/10: Wow. This is probably Metallica's best instrumental. The Call of the Ktulu was great, but often repetetive. Not this one. This one is interesting the first half, and then changes style and continues to sound even more interesting as it goes along. I'm not sure what it's about, but can guess that it's about outer space.
Damage Inc. 9.5/10: Great. Probably Metallica's best album closure. One hell of a closure. After the long and beautiful Orion, people are in a trance of a pretty melody in the first minute. But then the song takes off without expectancy and is over and done before you realize what just happened. The song is pretty much about what the title says.
Overall, terrific album without any filler. I'll be getting AJFA later next week.
It's #1 for a reason..........2007-06-10
Alright, I bought this album last month, with no Metallica music on my iPod except for 'Whiskey in the Jar' from Garage inc. It was only fiteen bucks, so I grabbed it. I popped it in and immediatly switched to Master of Puppets, the title track. After that, this has been in my CD player quite a bit(along with Led Zeppelin:Early Days and Latter Days and Black Rain). This is a great album. There should be no doubt in your mind whether to pickk it up or not. A recurring theme in the tracks are control and manipulation, but they're diverse enough so that it's more than one song. The liner notes have the lyrics inside, so you can sing along(good luck, these suckers are fast...) And now, time for a breakdown of the songs:
Battery: Great. Starts out pretty mellow, but gets heavier and proceeds to beat you into submission.
Master of Puppets: Great. Starts out heavy, then gets kinda' funky in the middle, and just when you think it's over, it punches you in the face and keeps marching.
The Thing The Should Not Be: Crap. This should be called The Song the Should Not Be.
Welcome Home(Sanitarium): Great. Pretty mellow, but like the mental patients it's about, it rises, stronger and stronger.
Leper Messiah: Great.
Orion: Great, and instrumental.
Damage Inc.: Alright.
I think that'sit, but if it isn't, I'll edit this review. Also, this album was number one in the 500 Greatest Heavy Metal Songs of all time, so it must be doing something right. :)
Master of Puppets, we miss Cliff Burton.......2007-05-29
Cliff Burton was the creative force behind much of Metallica's early music. He had learned much about music theory and he used it to enhance the ideas that went into Metallica's music. If you listen to "...And Justice For All", Metallica's fourth album, you will note a change in the kind of flow the music has in the band's songs. "Ride the Lightning" and "Master of Puppets" are just smoother than "...Justice." "Master of Puppets" is a nearly flawless metal record, containing many of the elements that defined metal in 1986. After Burton's untimely death in 1986, Metallica was never the same. For those who are disappointed with Metallica's later efforts just remember that the band to this day has not recovered from the loss of the creative talents of Cliff Burton.
1. Battery - the first song is probably the greatest opener of any Metallica album, even better than "Enter Sandman." The song begins with a nice acoustic intro and builds into a furious thrash song. Thrash songs are noted for their ripping type feel, a furious force of speed laden metal licks. The thing that separates Metallica from other bands who've used thrash is that Metallica was able to get full effect from the crunching guitars on their thrash songs like no other band I've heard.
I give this song a 5/5 rating.
2. Master of Puppets - considered by many to be Metallica's best song. I consider it a close second. More on that down the page. Master of Puppets is somewhat thrash but it also has a slow side. It is one complex piece of music and you can pick up Burton's music theory influence by following the complex riffage and cadence of this song. It is a masterpiece.
This song is a definite 5/5 rating.
3. The Thing that Should Not Be - a song about H.P. Lovecraft's Chtulu monster. This one is more like doom metal, though not exactly. It follows well in the tradition of Black Sabbath's song "Black Sabbath." It is a truly eerie song, probably cheesy somewhat to the advanced metal listener. I suppose it is all in taste. This remains one of my favorite all time metal songs.
A 5/5 rating.
4. Welcome Home (Sanitarium) - probably the finest metal song of all time. It is not thrashy in the truest sense of the word. It is slowed down compared to "Master of Puppets." But, the rage that comes through from Hetfields vocals and lyrics is all consuming. I don't know much about music composition, but I think the sense of this song is completely inspiring through all the parts that make up this song.
5/5
5. Disposable Heroes - I think this song should have been called "Back to the Front" because that's the punchline. The song is about the waste of humanity in individual soldiers who are ordered to die for their country. It is certainly a kind of anti-war song. It is also one of the best thrash songs I've ever heard. The drums pound away at you like a dreadful wind.
5/5
6. Leper Messiah - Ostensibly about corrupting influences preying on people's personal beliefs in order to obtain personal gain. It is a very good song, but not great-probably the weak point of the album. What a weakness. "Leper Messiah" is powerful in its own right.
4.5/5
7. Orion - an instrumental, one of four that Metallica has produced. This song may sum up Cliff Burton's legacy as a musician and music creator. If there were lyrics applied it would probably be the best song on the album, and I've noted some critics who claim it is the best song Metallica has ever made. I'd recommend buying "Master of Puppets" just so an initiate could hear this song.
5/5
8. Damage, Inc. - a kind of thrash-like song. This composition is for the thrash purest. The crunch normally associated with Metallica songs is sacrificed here in order that speed and ripping might be accomplished. This might be more speed metal than thrash metal, although the distinction imo is minute. Not the best song on the album but a great closer for what might be the greatest metal album of all time.
5/5
"Master of Puppets" is a terrific album, one of the great albums ever made. If you are a metal fan and you don't have this one yet, what are you waiting for?

This record has so much good material that it's a shame the production is so shoddy. Songwise, this is probably Metallica's most sophisticated album, exploring the theme of justice and perversions thereof with a vengeance. "One" is one of their best songs ever, building from a slow, edgy beginning into effortless overdrive. The title track is excellent and never boring, despite clocking in at more than nine minutes. It's the epic of the album, but all of the songs are long, displaying impressive chops and songwriting. Metallica took a commercial turn after ...And Justice for All, and it's interesting to speculate on what would have happened to their music had they continued in the direction suggested by this album. --Genevieve Williams
Amazon.com
Having already established themselves as the streetwise saviors of heavy metal's oft-tainted legacy in the '80s, Metallica rebounded from the accidental death of original bassist Cliff Burton to produce their most thematically challenging, musically accomplished album to date. Despite James Hetfield's dank, extended portraits of a world collapsing from corruption and decadence--themes that virtually guaranteed it little radio or television exposure--the album was nonetheless a muscular commercial success. Even "One," its complex, seven-and-a-half-minute adaptation of Dalton Trumbo's "Johnny Got His Gun," managed to scale the singles charts. Other highlights include "Blackened," "Eye of the Beholder," and the sweeping "To Live Is to Die," tracks that underscore a sense of musical ambition that's often downright prog-centric, yet never merely self-indulgent. --Jerry McCulley

Not Much To Say...Simply Masterful.......2007-07-13
Dang, too bad I can't give this a million stars!
I don't have as much that I can say about this album compared to other people. What I can say, though, is that this is the greatest album Metallica has ever recorded. But don't get me wrong, I loved Puppets as much as anyone else. Justice was just better, and I'll even say by quite a bit. When I listen to the album, I try to forget about the bad recording quality that it present on it, and I just listen to the MUSIC. When I do this, the true musicians that Hetfield and Ulrich were really jumps out at me. Two best songs on the album are, and I had to really think about this, The Frayed Ends of Sanity, and ...And Justice For All. I'm not a die-hard, Kill-'Em-All-and-that's-all-I-like Metallica fan, but people, I know my music, I know my Metallica, AND IT DOESN'T GET ANY BETTER THAN THIS FOLKS!!!!!!!!!!!
...And Rock For All.......2007-07-08
...And Justice For All by Metallica is what Metal is supposed to sound like. Excellent!!!
A Raw Metal Guitar Album (4.5 stars).......2007-07-07
Metallica's ...And Justice For All is seen my many fans as the end of Metallica. While I don't truly agree with this, this album really is the end of the band doing any thrash metal.
Now, beside that, this album is a bit different from any other Metallica album. How is it different? Well, you probably already know, but it sounds like there's only two people playing: Lars and one of the guitarists. It definitely gives the album a bit of a raw, under-produced feel. Sure, albums like Kill Em All and Ride the Lightning also have raw feelings, but not quite like this one.
Now, with bass or no bass, this is still the very thrash metal that the band was known for. And I still like it. Is it as good as some of their other albums? Not really, but it sure beats out St. Anger, that's for sure (well, any other Metallica album can basically destroy St. Anger in comparison).
All in all, very good album. Knocked it down half a star because the songs can sound empty sometimes without the bass.
An honest review........2007-06-26
Ok, I saw that there were about 780 or so reviews on this CD. So, I seriously doubt that I am going to add anything that hasn't already been said before.
But to let people know, and to give an honest review on this CD, here it goes:
"... And Justice for All" is certainly not the best MetallicA CD, but it surely is not the worst either.
The best MetallicA CDs are "Kill 'Em All" and "Ride the Lightning". That is quality Thrash Metal for what it is worth. Get those 2 CDs, and you pretty much have MetallicA's greatest hits. (Also, if you really think about it: Both of those CDs are somewhat MegadetH CDs. Dave Mustaine wrote 3/4ths of the songs on "Kill 'Em All" and 1/4th of the songs on "Ride the Lightning", but he never got credit for it. *See the inside liner notes in the CD cover of "Killing is my Business... and Business is Good" re-mastered CD from MegadetH about the whole story on that*).
My gosh, NOTHING is worse than the "Load" CD and the "Reload" CD. (More like "Crapload" is what is should have been called).
Just face it people, MetallicA went straight downhill after Cliff Burton died. His death was the death of MetallicA as a quality Thrash Metal band. From almost being just as heavy as early sLaYeR to becoming nothing more than a watered down third rate version of System of a Down.
The band never got over Cliff's death. It is obivious. The song writting quality went straight downhill and the overall Metal in the band started to disappear altogether. How MetallicA still even has the name Metal in their name now these days I honestly do not know? They are anything but Metal now.
That's the overall of the band during the time of this CD. For the specifics of the CD:
Has anyone ever noticed that you don't hear not one ounce of Bass on this entire CD? It is nothing but Rhythm Guitar and Drums, and you just barely hear the Lead Guitar sometimes on the CD.
It is almost like the band doesn't even have a bassist on this CD, b/c you can't hear him at all on any song on the whole CD.
Most of the songs on this CD are kick-butt. "Blackened", "...And Justice for All title song", "Eye of the Beholder", "The Shortest Straw", "The Frayed Ends of Sanity", and "Dyer's Eve". Those songs there make this CD what it is.
"One" has been overplayed to death so much that I could care less if I ever hear that song again. To me, "One" is a crap song, the beginning to middle part of it anyways. The end of it, the heavy part, is not bad at all, but the rest of the song is to be thrown away.
"Harvester of Sorrow" starts out pretty cool, but the song ends up going nowhere, and it is easy to just get disinterested in the song altogether. Nothing much in the song to really hold your interest.
"To Live is to Die" (instrumental) is not bad at all for most of the song and is very pretty in some parts. The beginning, about 4 or 5 minutes into the song, and at the end of the song are very pretty. The rest of the song just goes nowhere, and becomes bland and is almost like a broken record, playing the same part over and over and over and over again, and never going anywhere.
Sadly, "Dyer's Eve" will be the last awesome song this band would ever make. After that song was over, this band died, and the band as a whole were never anywhere as heavy or this much quality in the music as the first 4 CDs ever again to this day still.
MetallicA
1982 - 1989
R.I.P.
*On a side note: Most of the songs on this CD sound like the guys are trying to do all out MegadetH, but fall short of it. I still say that "Rust in Peace" CD from MegadetH is a million times better than "...And Justice for All" from the band formely known as MetallicA. "...And Justice for All" is not a horribly bad CD at all, but "Rust in Peace" is so much better.*

Don't let that classical-guitar-ish opening to "Fight Fire with Fire" fool you--Ride the Lightning packs a heavy-metal wallop. While not as ambitious as the subsequent Master of Puppets, this early Metallica album is indubitably one of their best. Thematically, it explores death and dying from myriad points of view: nuclear war ("Fight Fire with Fire"), electric-chair execution (the title track), and drowning ("Trapped Under Ice"). Interestingly, the best track on this album is probably "Fade to Black," a slower, more introspective song about suicide. There's also "Creeping Death," which remains a concert favorite. An excellent mix of rapid-fire guitar riffs, rip-roaring solos, and singer James Hetfield's trademark growl, this is thrash metal at its finest. Very highly recommended. --Genevieve Williams

Some of their best work (pre-sellout).......2007-07-10
I do own this album. I bought it on CD and cassette back when they were released. And to this day, this is one of their best albums. It's just too bad that they they all had to turn into a bunch of a-holes and sign on to be monkey boys for the RIAA, suing children and P2P networks.
Ride the Lightning with Metallica.......2007-07-09
For sheer metal mayhem, there are fewer CDs available that are better than this one. Ride the Lightning features some of the finest Metallica material they produced. From Creeping Death to For Whom the Bell Tolls, this is a CD not to be missed. A five star metal masterpiece.
Great.......2007-07-06
This CD is classic Metallica ALL the CD's shine for a million different reasons. Each one is different and each one is great.
A Defining Album of Metal.......2007-06-15
I recently got into Metallica the past few weeks (their old songs), and this was the first studio album I picked up. I have never been blown away by a more terrific album than this one. Although I have not bought MOP yet (I hear it's the best), I know that this band really had it back in the 80s. You don't even need to read the reviews on here, you can just gaze at the 5 star amazon rating. How many CDs have you seen a 5 star rating with? Highly Recommended.
My favorite Metallica album and my second favorite metal album of all time.......2007-05-29
Metallica's 1984 sophomore effort is a thrash metal masterpiece of the highest order. Featuring fast, aggressive guitar riffs as well as melodic acoustic passages, frantic vocals, shredding solos, intelligent lyrics, and raw, crushing heaviness, Ride the Lightning is easily one of, if not THE best thrash metal album of all time. The only song I mildly dislike is "Escape", and even that's got its moments. Not even Master of Puppets or Megadeth's best albums can stand up to this one IMO. My favorite tracks on this classic album include "Fight Fire with Fire", "Ride the Lightning", "For Whom the Bell Tolls", "Fade to Black", "Creeping Death", and "The Call of Ktulu". Highly recommended for any metal fan, your collection's not complete without it.

Although it's based on the 1967 movie of the same name, Thoroughly Modern Millie is almost thoroughly new. Composer Jeanine Tesori (Violet) and lyricist Dick Scanlan wrote a whole batch of songs, while retaining a couple from the movie--including the Jimmy van Heusen-Sammy Cahn title tune--and recycling even older material (look for Victor Herbert's "I'm Falling in Love with Someone" and the inventively arranged "Nuttycracker Suite"). Miraculously, the show, set during the jazz age, doesn't feel stitched together, and Tesori does a great job cranking out swinging melodies. Sutton Foster is appropriately brassy as Millie, but she can also tone it down, as in the beginning of "Gimme Gimme" (of course, she then proceeds to project up to the last rafters as the song builds to its climax). Harriet Harris, as nasty Mrs. Meers, steals the show with "They Don't Know." Close your eyes, listen to her, and you'll be back in Broadway's golden age. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

A must to add to your collection.......2007-05-18
I was very fortunate enough to see this on Broadway. It was one of the best shows I've ever seen! The music has just enough jazz and contemporary vive that any musical lover would enjoy! It's also got tapping in it! Sutton is simply awesome in this role and all of the cast can really belt out their songs. Harriet Harris is phenominal in her role as Mrs. Meers. I highly recommend this to all broadway lovers! It's one to add to your collection!
Delightful.......2006-06-12
The music takes a little bit to grow on you, but boy, does it! It's wonderful, charming, romantic, funny--just like the play itself. I loved almost every song and I was really impressed with "Long As I'm Here With You"-- I thought it was an old song written back in the twenties, because it so sounded like one. The cast is absolutely energetic and endearing, and Sutton Foster just *rocks*. Definitely worth the money.
YOU WILL LOVE IT.......2006-02-17
If you like musicals, you will NOT REGRET purchasing this musical soundtrack. JUST DO IT. It's so great, you will be listening to it forever. I also saw the show at the Kennedy Center in D.C. and it's one of the best I've ever seen. (And I've seen A LOT.)
Have Fun!

While not as timeless as Ride the Lightning or Master Puppets, Metallica's debut album--originally released in 1983--is still a fine piece of thrash metal, and as good a marker as any for the debut of the genre. Fusing the rapid-fire attack of bands like Motorhead with a guitar style reminiscent of such British heavy metal bands as Iron Maiden and Judas Priest, Metallica essentially created a new kind of metal. Several of the songs from this 1983 album have since become classics, including "Seek & Destroy", "The Four Horsemen", and "Jump in the Fire". The songwriting isn't as sophisticated as on Metallica's later releases; still, it's a great listen, and essential for any heavy metal fan. --Genevieve Williams

Very Underrated Album.......2007-06-15
Though not quite as great as RTL or MOP, Kill 'Em All is still a thrash masterpiece. Maybe the vocals aren't as fresh, or the lyrics as mature, but this album will amaze you. Highlights include "The Four Horsemen," "Motorbreath," the amazing "Pulling Teeth," and "Seek and Destroy."
Essential Metallica.......2007-05-24
If you like Thrash Metal, you need this album. No metal collection is complete without Metallica, and this is a great representation of the band's core vibe before they changed their sound. When I first got this album over a decade ago, I put it aside and liked other Metallica albums much better, like Ride the Lightning,...And Justice For All, Master of Puppets, and the black album. KEA was a little too rough around the edges for me then. But I have seen the light. This album is back in the rotation for me. If you like Heavy Metal, especially if you like Thrash, give this album a try. If you like Metallica, this album is an essential part of your collection.
great first album.......2007-05-19
This is a great metal/thrash CD.
I see alot of responses here about Blitzkrieg and Am I Evil? being deleted from the original album. This is not the case folks!
First off, both of these songs were recorded in 1984 (nearly a year after their first album). They were originally recorded during their second album in the spring of 1984 and included as B-sides on the Creeping Death 12" single.
They only added the two tracks to the first album as BONUS tracks, not as originals. Besides, the songs are available in remastered form (and have been for nearly a decade now) on the Garage, Inc. CD.
OK, is everyone up to speed on this??
Anyway, Kill 'Em All is a great album. There was hardly any band that played faster or more aggressively at this time (1983).
Hit The Lights is a great opener. It almost goes against the grain for a few seconds. I knew this was thrash when i put it in and expected to be assaulted by guitar riffs and drums in the first 5 seconds but instead heard silence! But this song comes up slow and build up before clubbing you over the head. Wait for it....LOL!
The Four Horsemen is great. It has a galloping hoof beat guitar (hence the title) and sounds great. This song has the best lyrics on the entire album. Motorbreath is a nice short, quick thrash that is played very well.
Jump in the Fire is a bit of a weak song to me, but has some great riffing. Pulling Teeth is basically a bass solo. It's interesting musically and has a good mix of notes and distortion.
Whiplash is pure speed and any of live versions I have heard make this sound like it should be on some children's record as a hymn.
Phantom Lord and No Remorse are cut from the same cloth basically and two of the better songs here. Seek and Destroy is great here, but once again this was made to be played LIVE. Metal Militia is a great closer and ends to the beat of marching boots. How appropriate!
All in all this a great album. Some of the lyrics are amateurish and the vocals can get a bit annoying, but this is a first album and only hints at the greatness they would later achieve. You just have to listen for it a bit more here.
Five stars without question.
Excellent Debut.......2007-04-13
When you listen to this cd you think, what went wrong with this band? The cd shows you where this band could have went if they didnt go main stream. Slayer is my faviorte band in metal, but if Metallica kept making music like this, then I might have a different opinion.
Classic Thrash.......2007-03-08
I'm 38 and a professional. In my youth, I was as wild and wooly as anyone else, but I never got into Metallica as a younger adolescent. It was not until Metallica made Load, Reload, and Garage that I ever bought Metallica CDs. Beastie Boys, Led Zeppelin, Run DMC, Crystal Method, Paul Van Dyk, Chemical Brothers, Prodigy . . . and of course, classical symphonic music (Chopin, Brahms, Tchaichovsky, etc.) are what I would consider my core music (obviously depending on mood). At the urging of an online friend I recently purchased all four of Metallica's first four CDs, and I do not regret it. It is certainly not something I'll listen to every day, nor even every week. But it is classic, it is powerful, it is iconic. When you are in the mood to head bang, nothing else satisfied! :)

At a point in their career when most bands would rest their laurels upon a greatest-hits package or live album, Metallica has done both, but with a decidedly loopy twist. They've recorded a double-live greatest-hits package with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra "sitting in." Rock history and cutout bins are littered with previous attempts at a rock-symphonic fusion, from Emerson, Lake & Palmer to Deep Purple to the Moody Blues and the Siegel-Schwall Blues Band. But while previous efforts at mixing the low-brow with the high-brow have mostly ended up browbeating the intended audience, S&M plays like a precarious joy ride. Set against the shrewd efforts of a team of orchestrators and arrangers (who employ enough taste to keep proceedings from sounding like one long "Live and Let Die" outtake), Metallica plays for their lives, undercutting their general somber tone by ratcheting up their musicianship several notches. The most underrated player here is SFO guest conductor and soundtrack vet Michael Kamen, whose attention to detail and nuance--and intuitive grasp of the Metallica canon--keeps this unlikely meeting of the minds focused and on track. -Jerry McCulley

Amazing.......2007-06-25
Many people don't care for this album because it doesn't sound like it was made in a garage. Those people who fell in love with the Metallica of the 80s know what they used to sound like, and many of them never forgave the band for evolving. S&M is incredible, it is meant to be heard and felt. No one can deny the power that Metallica wields, but add the emotion and power of an orchestra, and it turns into something else. In my opinion both the band and the orchestra turned it up a notch for this recording.
A towering achievement.......2007-04-11
This album transforms all of the Metallica classics into works of art while at the same time introducing new cuts into the mix. The addition of a full orchestra to heavy metal hits is remarkable and elevates Metallica to a place that no other metal band has ever been before. This is truly one of the best rock albums to come out in a long time. All of the greatest hits are played to perfection and the recording is top-quality. Songs that were released by Metallica in the 80s and early 90s have new life. A must-have for all heavy metal rockers!
incredible! keep the orchestra!!.......2007-02-20
Why in the world would anyone say to get rid of the orchestra in this album?! This is a definite keeper. I have owned this album for over six years now and it is still up there as one of my all-time favourites, especially in regards to metallica! it really is incredible! It sounds much better with the orchestra because they add an element that can't be compared to anything else. I like all of the songs better with the SFO. Wonderfully produced, sounds great and hard to beat! One of the most solid and respected albums in my collection. I love it!
Get rid of that orchestra!!.......2007-02-03
The orchestra was completely out of place in this album; they are just not capable of truly fitting in with heavy metal. Nothing against orchestra; I played in one in high school. (Hey, it was an easy A!) but it's oil and water.. orchestras and heavy metal just don't mix. There were a few good songs on here; I must say Master of Puppets on this album sounds really good. If I had to buy it again, I wouldn't pay for the whole album, I'd pick and choose the better songs on itunes.

Even those who scoff at the idea that rock & roll is the devil's music have to think twice when listening to Pantera. The pill-popping, strip-bar-ogling, beer-guzzling Texas combo takes Metallica's speed-metal cues to new heights of brutality and sacrilege. Fortunately, they're extremely good at what they do. The polyrhythmic complexity of Vinnie Paul's drumming in "Psycho Holiday" and guitarist "Dimebag" Darrell's breathtaking solo in "Heresy" are examples of state-of-the-art metal musicianship. Vocalist Phil Anselmo often sounds like Metallica's James Hetfield, but his brooding croon on "Cemetery Gates" and his falsetto screams on the blindingly fast "Shattered" are more like vintage Deep Purple. Released in 1990, Cowboys made Pantera one of metal's top draws during an era in which it was almost eclipsed by alternative rock. --James Rotondi

duh.......2007-06-08
Who wouldn't love this first mass produced Pantera album? YOu'd have to not have ear drums, or a brain.
Good?.......2007-05-16
I bought this ancient cd at a thrift store, donated back 3 days later. I didn't find this cd all that great. Cowboys from hell was the only good song. everything else on this cd is just noisy boring riffs with typical guitar solos that have been done to death by millions of other players. The song structure is typical verse-chorus-verse-chorus-verse-guitar solo-chorus. This is one of the main reason I don't listen to modern day music except rap (underground). Dimebagg Darrel needed alittle more practice, He is not a Legend. Don't get me wrong, he died horribly. But come on people.. A Legend??! They are hundreds of amazing blues and jazz guitarist that have had a short life and they didn't get the praise they deserve.
Phil cannot sing (scream). He sounds like he's singing on the toilet and taking a huge dump. The drummer is so-so. And I cant even hear the bassist.
I tried to give this album a chance but I always fall sleep halfway through the album. I don't understand why is this album so popular maybe I have poor taste.. whatever it is I still give it 2 stars for the effort and the 1st track.

just make sure to pick up this CD Before you die so you can spend your last moments knowing you listened to what metal really is!
BY IT! NOW! I dare you!.......2006-11-06
This album is probably one of the more important metal releases. Ever. It;s not as pivotal as Black Sabbath, Kill 'Em All, Ride The Lightning, Master of Puppets, Peace Sells, Reign in (fake)Blood, Welcome to Hell, or Ace of Spades. However, it is better than most of the above. And it's almost as pivotal. See, this was the first groove metal album, and I'ma gonna go out on a limb here and say this is the best metal album of the 90's, calling RATM hard rock. See, if you like a good riff, this is it. The best riffing album ever. And if you liked Tony Iommi's guitar style, but wished he'd gone even crazier, this is it. Aside from Tom Morello, Dimebag has the most unique guitar style (and coolest name), period. And it's cool. This album is not recommended for people who can't deal with high-pitched vocals, though. They might be more intrested in the follow up, Vulgar Display of Power, which is just that. Anyhow...great songs about. Everything on here is solid, but Cowboys From Hell, Shattered (highest note ever!), Heresy, Message in Blood, The Art of Shredding (which does not have a shred solo), The Sleep, Medicine Man, Psycho Holiday, and the nice ballad Cemetary Gates are the best. Although that only leaves 2 tracks to be considered "filler." And they're both solid bits of thrash/groove metal. Through and through, this album is great. It's fast and heavy, except for 2 slowdowns, and the riffing is awesome. The lyrics are cool and dark, but without either going all emo on us, or being stupid pointlessly violent Slayer-esque stuff...a unique and brilliant album. Buy it. Or don't. But before making up your mind, listen to Cowboys From Hell. Then buy it.
I cant say this is better then Vulgar display of power...But I will!.......2006-07-27
I got this recently and actually I thought it deserved 5 stars!A very good album which has some of there best songs.
1. Cowboys From Hell:This song is very bland. Not many times it changes and mostly from beginning to the end Phil is screaming like AC/DC with some growls and starts with a pick sliding on the guitar when some bass slashes on and slashes on again untill we hear what sounds like water spraying and then in comes the heavy, fast guitar and then stops to do the riff without th buzz and then we hear "OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!COME ON!" it leads to "OVERLASTIN' AS WE STAND TALL!NO ROCKIN' CAUSE I SAID UH!SHOUT DOWN!ITS TOO LOUD NO LOOK AND YOU CANT TURN BACK!!" and then he growls "YOU SEE US COMING AT YOU ALLTOGETHER RUN FOR COVER!We're taking over this town" a definate good song.Heavy and sounds like it was recorded in 1977.10/10
2. Primal Concrete Sledge:very heavy with fast riffs starting it and sludge riffs flying everywhere at once and shouts and screams.Good and a huge rocker!10/10
3. Psycho Holiday:Just say that this is psycho and that it is a holiday and pretty much yeah it is.10/10
4. Heresy:Great heavy song with screeching riffs and a great solo.
5. Cemetery Gates:Starts acoustic and then incomes the famous heavy riff and then acoustic comes and great calm vocals of "Reverend Reverend I feel it crawling in the night" and "Sometimes when I'm alone" this song is more calm but the best song because of its shouting chorus "WELL I GUESS YOU TOOK MY YOUTH AND GAVE IT ALL AWAY! IT WAS THE START OF A NEW FRONT DOOR BEFORE THE MEMORY!AND WHEN SHE DIED!I COULDNT CRY I PUSHED MYSELF OUTDOOR!!!!YOU LEFT ME!IF YOU PLEASE!ALL ALONE AND THE MEMORY SELLS IT APAaart!"The way we were...I will unlock my door. And pass the cemetary gates."Great song.11/10
6. Domination:A return to heaviness with growls and screams!10/10
7. Shattered:Good but very heavy.10/10
8. Clash With Reality:Nice Clash.10/10
9. Medicine Man:Flashback to metallica.12/10
10. Message In Blood:WOW!10/10
11. The Sleep:The name says it all.
12. The Art Of Shredding:Same here.Teaches you how to SHRED!
Great album.
