BORING.......2006-02-15
I am yet to understand why this movie is compared to the likes of Platoon. There is no question which of the two is the better one. I was bored out of my mind after an hour. I turned it off and then when I had time to waste, I finished it. I am sorry I did. 2 Hours I will never get back. I know that evertone is different, but if you have not seen this movie and are thinking about viewing it, do so on a Sunday when you have NOTHING else to do. The only highlight was the Drill Instructor. He managed to crack a smile out me on occasion.
Only One Good Track.........2002-10-14
The first one... The rest of the CD is movie instrumentals that are excellent for falling asleep to, but that's about it.
Not for everyone.......2002-02-21
Abigail Mead, the composer of eight songs of this soundtrack, is actually Vivian Kubrick, daughter of Stanley Kubrick.
The disc has 15 tracks:
The first song is a hip-hop/techno mix of the cadences sung by Sgt Hartman in the first part of the movie, it is not a beautiful or good and I don't think it was necessary to include it.
The songs 2 to 7 are songs from the sixties and hear them during the movie creates a "mood" for the movie, for example, the song These Boots Are Made For Walking, by Nancy Sinatra and the scene in Vietnam which a prostitute is walking fits just perfectly and watch the movie without this song would have much less effect. Although they are not complex songs and most of the lyrics are foolish it's worth to have them in the score because they made a good part in the movie.
Song number 8 is the Marine's Hymn, a nice inclusion even thought it's not likely that someone would play this song very often at home.
The rest of the score are the instrumental themes composed by Abigail Mead, some of them are quiet and peaceful like Leonard, and others are more aggressive like Parris Island, with some nice stereo effects.
This is not the best score for a Stanley Kubrick movie and I suggest you to listen to it before you buy or you can have some bad surprises like not listening to Paint it Black, because it was not included or odd songs like Time Suspended. Actually I would suggest this soundtrack for Collectors, Kubrick fans or people with eclectic musical taste.
Boot Camp scenes are hauntingly realistic.......2000-08-04
The best part of this movie is the beginning, when they show what a raw recruit goes through at Boot Camp. It brings back a lot of memories because it was so well done. Lee Ermey just is exactly what a DI is at Paris Island. All the nuances, the lingo, the discipline. The acting is all first rate. Also, the combat portrayals in Hue City showed the type of frustration that vets faced in Vietnam. Snipers were nightmares to deal with. By the time you snuffed 'em out, you lost three or four men. The other movie that, in my opinion is the best war movie ever made, is Hamburger Hill. That movie showed what real grunt life was like in the bush.
Full Metal Jacket.......2000-05-16
Full metal jacket is by far one of the best movies I have ever seen. Although the language is too strong for many people (not for me), it definately puts the point across about the harsh life of Marines during training on the Island. The sniper scene is very well done as well. Gunnery Sergeant Hartman is portrayed by an excellent actor who is able to scream obscenities at his troops without even cracking a smile, I would like to see the bloopers reel from Full Metal Jacket.

Customer Reviews:
Sci-fi progressive/jazz/funk/fusion? Works for me..........2007-01-16
You can say that the theme of this album is corny and dated, or that "Universal Love" is out-of-place and cheesy here, or that funk and progressive don't mix. But this is a very enjoyable, well-played, well-composed album despite the hurdles it faced. Lenny White plays excellent drums (and some synthesizers) all over this album, along with Don Blackman (vocals, keyboards), Alex Blake (bass), and Nick Moroch and Jeff Sigman (guitars). This is mostly progressive rock/jazz fusion (a la "Romantic Warrior"), with some funk thrown in on the side. Despite the less-than-desirable production sound, I still find this to be a very exciting, interesting and unique cd from a talented drummer and songwriter. If you're a fan of Romantic Warrior-era Return To Forever, this cd is essential.
I value interesting music that is played and recorded well. This cd's rating was based on:
Music quality = 8.3/10; Performance = 9/10; Production = 7/10; CD length = 8/10.
Overall score weighted on my proprietary scale = 8.2 ("4 stars")
Fantastic Drumming.......2005-08-17
Lenny White ranks among the top drummers in the business. This 70's release is a great showcase for his skill. All the pieces are linked together in a kind of story that takes place as the 'pirates' rocket through space. The cover art illustrates each piece in a "graphic novel" or comic book type panel.
The music is jazz rock fusion, providing a lot or room for some amazing grooves and unbelievably fast sweeps across the drum kit ("as in Assault"). "Prelude" creates an ethereal the atmosphere and sets up tension leading into "Pursuit". A few of the tunes are dated now by arrangements that feature "Return to Forever" type instrumentation and sections of sappy 70's disco style 'woo-woo-woo' and dooby-dooby-doo-blah' lyrics. But the tracks travel through a wide range of moods and music settings and once they get away from the lyrics, the tightly punctuated pieces are great to listen to.
Personal favorites: Pursuit (except disco lyric section), The Great Pyramid, a short jazz piece called "Remembering", "Stew, Cabbage & Galactic Beans", "Heavy Metal Monster", the amazing "Assault", and the final track "Climax: Theme for the Astral Pirates".
Astral Pirates .......2005-07-19
One of the seventys truly great fusion masterpieces! My vinal copy is truly worn so to here this recording all spiffed up is a real pleasure to the ears! The electric guitarist(Nick Moroch) on this cd is a lead playing monster,I,m a guitarist myself and testify that Nick is one of the unsung guitar heros of all time!everything about this cd is 5 stars. Enjoy!! Provo Pete
Not What I Suspected!.......2005-03-07
'Lenny White's Adventures Of Astral Pirates' is the drummer's fourth solo album and I was very skeptical right from the start. My first Lenny White CD purchase was 'Streamline' and that's probably my favorite of all his albums, and between CD's and vinyl I have most of them, including this one.I am not a huge fan of White's early solo albums-he spends a great deal of time imitating Billy Cobham's spastic fusion drumming style and fills every available space with his instrumentation-much as he also did with Return To Forever. So on 'Astral Pirates' his drumming is very loud, but at the same time is more controlled and explores the sci-fi theme of this music. And the louder numbers are also saddled with simple funk numbers that came to full flower on the next outing. Not only that but this is probably his better crafted material thus far, even the fusion pieces. The presence of more vocals on this album gives White's music a sense of individuality that it didn't tend to have earlier when he was trying to imitate the styles of other fusion drummers instead of working on being his own musician. So in the end I have a vinyl LP copy of this album (not the Wounded Bird CD issue spoken of) but an album is an album and for all interested I strongly suggest that for a good introduction to early Lenny White you should pick this up-it's a great sampler from his fusion side rather then his funk side. For that I suggest 'Streamline'.
Masterpiece but bad CD transfer.......2003-11-27
Ok Ok, the CD version sounds pretty bad but a lot of factors are involved. All analog master tapes are basically magnetic particles on plastic. Over time the tape is gonna lose some quality. Also storage conditions of the masters determine the quality. The CD is ok if you wanna hear the tunes conveniently but this album must be experienced on the original vinyl. The vinyl will always sound better because when the albums were pressed the masters were brand new.

Edgar Winter is sometimes referred to as Johnny Winter's brother, but he is a rock star in his own right, having a # 3 album with They Only Come Out At Night. This album remains a firm fan favorite. Customer Reviews:
Recyled and Rejuvenated .......2007-06-11
Edgar Winter has always been a record company's nightmare. Why - because he is just such a damn good musician and singer. He can cover just about any genre of music with conviction and creativity. White Trash was always his best vehicle as it put him in charge of a rockin' R&B horn band with the added pleasure of a second powerful lead singer, Jerry Lacroix. The group unfortunately only lasted for two records which left me and alot of fans wanting for more. This record appeared in the late '70's and went vitually unnoticed. The rhythm section gets a funkin' update with an obvious nod to Tower of Power, and Edgar and Jerry pick up where they left off with their double-barreled soul singing tour de force. Their are a couple of less than stellar moments, but "Leftover Love" and "Stickin' it Out" just smoke with Edgar singing and playing his tail off. Jerry gives his all on "In and Out of Love Blues". For me this record/CD is a must have if you have any musical interest in great R&B with a blusey edge.

Hail To the Thief!.......2005-08-06
Despite the fact that most of our presidents are not worth remembering in music; this is none the less an interesting CD. Altissimo! has done its usualy bit of culling through the Marine Band library to dig out enough appropriate pieces to put together on one CD. No original recordings here! We should be glad that its a full length selection of over 60 mins for a change, instead of the old 45 min. cheats in the past! Still, the different sound qualities of the various tracks is distracting at times.
Most labels when they combine different recordings together usually list the recording date and who conducted the band at that time. Altissimo! has not graduated to that level of professionalism in their products yet. Hence we just get The US Marine Band, not when it was recorded and who might be directing it!
Fortunately, the quality of the Marine Band is so good that it does not matter what Altissimo! does in putting together a CD. That said, the music provides an interesting chronology of ceremonial music played at the White House over the years. The linear notes are an improvment over the past, when little or nothing was provided. All and all, not bad from what we have come to expect from Altissimo!
Hail to the Chief.......2005-02-02
Hail to the Chief is the latest of about twenty-seven CDs offered by "Altissimo!", which offer recordings of the USA's fine military service musical organizations. Until Altissimo!, these recording were very rare and just about impossible to find. Thanks to Altissimo! every one can appreciate and enjoy the fine music of these top-notch musical organizations.
The program in Hail to the Chief is a tribute to our presidents. It is a varied program that shows the depth of the music played by one of America's oldest, established in 1798, and finest musical organizations, the United States Marine Band. This CD contains twenty-one marches and other classical numbers from Sousa to Strauss to Tchaikovsky. Some of the music in the CD is rare and for this reason alone of interest to music history buffs. One of these selections is a recording of the "Star-Spangled Banner" using the earliest published arrangement (1814) of the anthem. Another is the "Solemn March" played at Lincoln's funeral. Also included a rarely recorded Sousa piece, "Easter Monday on the White House Lawn." There is also an historic 1906 recording of Scott Joplin's "Maple Leaf Rag."
The recording also contains excerpts from speeches made by five of our presidents four of which were from inaugural addresses. The program notes explain the musical selections and how each was of interest to the various presidents.
The only negative, and it is not with the CD itself, is that the program notes do not include recording dates, where recorded and who the conductor of the band was. I highly recommend this CD to all interested in the America's patriotic music as well as the serious collector of military music and those interested in the musical roots of our country.
George Barkman
Another Great Altissimo! Release.......2005-01-13
Listening to the latest CD from Altissimo! brought pleasure to my ears. Whether you like listening to ballads, waltzes, Hungarian Dances, or marches you will find something on this CD that you will love to listen to. This wonderful compilation presents the listener with music favored by 23 of our United States Presidents, and includes bonus tracks of excerpts from four inaugural speeches.
Hail to the Chief.......2005-01-11
Hail to the Chief is unique, educational and without question, absolutely wonderful!
I was initially puzzled by the selections but as I began to listen and read the short narrative that is offered I started to realize I was being taken on a very different trip through American history. Consequently, the impact of the program had a totally unexpected and fascinating effect.
I was not just mesmerized by the sounds I heard, the arrangements which were presented or the memorable utterances of some of our Chief Executives. I was completely entranced by the realization that these men and others who had held the office of President of the United States, had listened and reacted to the same music the CD offers. It gave me an insight into their humanity that text books cannot provide.
As an example, I hadn't known the original sheet music for the "Star Spangled Banner" was arranged differently from the way we listen to it today --- who know how many Americans heard it played that way?
I had never actually thought about the fact that Washington might have actually heard "Hail Columbia" played, just as I was hearing it.
I was a bit startled that Chester Arthur commanded Sousa to compose what became the "Presidential Polonaise" and tried to imagine how much pressure he, (Sousa), must have felt in doing the President's bidding. (By the way, after listening to that unquestionably superb composition of the "March King", I must admit despite its delightful sound, I'm very pleased that we no longer use that as the official march of the President and we have returned to "Hail to the Chief".)
I vividly recall watching the casket of President Kennedy being carried over the steps of the Capitol and listening to "The Navy Hymn" and the music recaptured that moment as if it was yesterday.
It wasn't solely the music I savored but it was also the historical images they engendered. Indeed, music affects all "ages"!
The CD is a professional product that will hopefully be enjoyed by thousands for many years to come.

Alan White is best known as the original drummer for Yes. His first solo album was "Ramshackled". Originally released in 1976. It has long been a collector's item, being issued on CD only for a short time overseas.
Customer Reviews:
Ramshackled Still Sounds GREAT.......2007-01-22
I bought this LP back in '77 and was blown away by the versatile drumming of Alan White. Every track has a different feel. I had to add this CD to my collection of growing YES CDs to replace old LPs. This is one of my favorits...
Withstanding the test of time.......2006-08-10
When I first heard Ramshackled some 30-odd years ago, I cast it aside as the lamest of the mid-70s Yes solo albums. Having gotten an 8-track tape version, the sound quality was terrible and the music didn't interest me. Now, however, I've come to appreciate the musicians and musicality of this work. The remastering is great and I've come to appreciate the tunes on this CD for what they are, rather than comparing to Story of I or (gulp) Olias. Well worth another listen!
Not as good as when a member of Yes, but..........2006-07-13
Together with Carl Palmer from ELP, Phil Collins -either with Genesis or as solo musician- and the late Keith Moon from The Who and John Bonham from Led Zeppelin, Alan White is one of the best drummers of 70s Rock. This album, a solo effort with other musicians out of the lines of Progressive/Symphonic Rock, may not be considered a very good one as the other solo efforts from the original Yes members (i.e. compare with "Fish Out Of Water" from bassist Chris Squire or "Olias of Sunhillow" from singer-leader Jon Anderson). However I will play my bet for purchasing it as a Yes fan item, as well as for purely sentimental reasons.

Music for your pimpmobile!.......2004-01-20
Play this in your 1976 Thunderbird, wear a suede fedora with a great big feather in it, a white leisure suit and put the seat 'way back so that you can drive straight-armed and ENJOY! Lenny White is a serious drummer and his chops are indisputable. But I just stuck my vinyl version of this on the turntable and so much of it told me why 70's music is lamentable. However, I would encourage you to buy it for the cut "Sweet Dreamer" which is worth 5 stars in and of itself. I wish Lenny had more of this tune in him and less a desire to show that he could pound away more fast and furious than other fusion drummers of his time. A perfect time warp piece.
Far Superior To "Venesian Summer"!.......2003-10-21
"Big City" is far more throughaly funky and far less self
indulgent then alot of Lenny Whites solo work and therefore can be seen as an overall high water mark in his catalog.Nothing
on this album is dull or overdone and the funk level is set on
HIGH so if you want some Lenny White in your collection, get this!
The "funkmaster".......2002-08-30
This is White's second solo album ,the first one was Ven. Summer.
This is the ex-drummer from the great Chick Corea band Return
to Forever. His fame with them was on the CD Romantic Warrior.
(get this too ,amazing!!) The is much better than his first,
White uses an all-star cast to make this cd Groove!!! Great
CD,worth getting.

How long I have waited to see the great Lenny White's work available on digital media. I just died and went to heaven!!! This album is a funky masterpiece that has been hidden from view in the the digital world far too long!!! I still have my vinyl copy under lock and key as well as armed guards on duty round the clock!!! If anyone even thinks about stealing my "Big City" LP all I have to say is make sure your insurance premiums are paid up and you may as well say good-bye to your family, because when I catch you with my copy of Lenny Whites "Big City" the undertaker will have work to do!!!

FIVE STARS PLUS.......2006-06-06
I've been buying alot of my old 70's and early 80's fusion cd's since my vinyl has been all but destroyed from repeated playings and abuse. I found Lenny White's Big City and Venesian Summer in a used CD bin in a record store in Baltimore. Listening to Lenny old stuff reminded me of how much I dug Streamline when it released. This CD is totally slamming and the sound still sounds fresh. I played the cd in my car for a 70's homeboy and he literally lost his mind. He wanted to borrow it but I remembered that was how all my vinyl got destroyed. The previous review was right on. The Larry Dunn touch was magic. Remember Caldera, Larry's fusion band featuring Eddie Del Barrio, George Strunz, this CD has that kind of magic. The Marcus Miller bass sets this cd ablaze. Buy,Listen and Enjoy!!
Marcus Miller has arrived.......2006-05-25
Fantastic CD. I agree with the other reviews. The main things that set this project apart were Larry Dunn's production (his synth programming and orchestration is absolutely gorgeous, as always!) and something not mentioned in the previous reviews: Marcus Miller (how could you not mention MM?!?)!! Oh my god, the tone, the groove! Marcus was only about 18 years old on this CD, but had certainly done his homework. This wasn't Marcus' first recording, but among his first. It was definitely his highest profile recording up to that time, and notable because he was playing with Lenny White, inviting direct comparison with Stanley Clarke. Marcus doesn't shy away from the challenge, and even throws in a Stanley lick or two, as he sometimes did in this early phase of his career (check out Brecker Brothers' Detente). This CD really marks Marcus' arrival, which is (not coincidentally) also the beginning of the end of the Stanley Clarke / Jaco Pastorius era.
Not Such A High Concept!.......2004-09-11
Following in the lead of his band Return To Forever's
nagging hyperbole, most of Lenny White's solo albums have been
little more then excersises in overplaying-only the most intellectual and skilled of musicians would be likely to even
appreciate them. But on 1978's 'Streamline' Lenny White went all
out to change all that.Across eleven songs the arrangements are
tightly wound and the accompanyment extremely glossy.High production values are prominant but so is a much welcome sense
of actual melody and song quality.
The instrumental "Pooh Bear" is probably the
best example of what great fusion should be-grooving,upbeat
and expressive and Larry Dunn's production does give some of these tunes and Earth,Wind & Fire style. In the meantime Chaka Khan joins in to throw down a throbbing funk rendition of
"Lady Madonna" (actually it may even wipe the floor with
The Beatles original as well).Even "12 Bars From Mars" and
"Earthlings" may even give a little missive from the funk-rock
book while "Struttin'" and "Time" are pure vocal funk!Even the
more pure fusiony tunes "Lockie's Inspiration","I'll See You
Again" and "Night Games" are far more structured."Cosmic Indigo"
ends off the whole thing veturing into acoustic jazz. All this being said due to the often uneven nature of Lenny White albums
this is probably the first album you should purchase by this artist!
What Jazz-Fusion is supposed to be!.......2003-07-12
This is probably THE most awesome jazz-fusion album ever! I can't believe they waited SO long to put it out on CD! I have been waiting for this for 15 years! From the incredible opening "Struttin'" right on through the funked up version of "Lady Madonna" with Chaka Khan's soaring vocals on the break, to the blistering guitar work on "Earthlings" and on to the final cut "Cosmic Indigo" this record will BLOW YOU AWAY!
If you are into jazz-fusion and can only afford one album, this is the one you should buy!!! The tunes are all wired and the players are all at the top of their game on this one. The sonic presence of the lead guitar on "Earthlings" will pin you back and make you wonder how they got such a spectacular sound onto the recording over 20 years ago!
It's got enough jazz in it for the jazz buffs, and more than enough fusion to draw the rock crowd in. If you want, you can even sample "12 Bars from Mars" on your computer, and play it back at half speed to find out what the heck it is (subtle hint).
Buy it, put it in, crank up the volume and be prepared to be inspired, impressed, and blown away . . . all at the same time! You will finally know what the "REPEAT ALL" button on your CD player is for! Buy, buy, buy! Listen, listen, listen! Cherish, cherish, cherish! Listen some more!
I guarantee you will not regret buying this one, unless you ONLY go for classical music. If that's the case, all of the above is lost on you anyway.
A Lenny White Classic...........2003-06-27
This album is truly some of Lenny's best work. This is one of an array of albums showing Lenny at the peak of his creative powers in a very special time in jazz-fusion history. He truly takes his place as an icon of the jazz-fusion movement.

Treading the Ethereal.......2006-11-05
Venusian Summer reveals a conflict happening within Lenny White's musical persona. There are grooves that have an R&B/Jazz signiture familiar to most listeners. While other cuts on the album tread the ethereal of jazz-fusion happening at this time. Most likely, Lenny White was trying to reach that "other reality" that artists like Chick Corea, Billy Cobham, and John Mclaughlin had already transcended to. This album is great for listeners just beginning to "get an ear" for fusion.
All different, all good.......2006-07-27
All tracks different in character -- and excellent. Players include some real heavyweights. Not lightweight stuff -- listen-to music, not elevator music. I would buy it again.
Lenny White Venusian Summer.......2005-09-23
Ahhh - The Prince of the Sea. I'd seen RTF in Ann Arbor, MI in 1975 or 1976, and was blown away by the experience - having not heard nor even heard of them before the concert (U of M housemate of mine approached me and offered to sell me a couple of extra tickets he ended up not needing - a fortuitous event, to say the least!) I'd also seen Larry Coryell & the Eleventh House as the WARM UP band before Frank Zappa in Ann Arbor. Here again, I was dumbfounded and in awe over seeing/hearing Larry Coryell, Michael Brecker, Randy Brecker, et. al. - also not having heard nor heard of them beforehand. Needless to say, it changed my perceptions of music forever (no pun intended). Al D is awesome on this cut - but the frenzied manner in which Larry C attacks the strings/notes really does it for me here... takes me back to those heady days of yore. The rest of the album is so-so, the first two cuts falling into a category I would call "whomever wrote this song should give up composing and just stick to playing", progressing into three dreamlike, atmospheric cuts. If not for PotS, I would not have bought the CD. Similar situation as with the tune Flame-Sky on Santana's Welcome CD. Santana is on fire - but the nod goes to McLaughlin.
70's Fusion at it's best........2005-04-25
I've had this album in vinyl for years and loved that it came out on CD. Lenny White's playing is what is always was, and continues to be...GREAT! He brings on board for this journey his fellow bandmate in Return to Forever, Al DiMeola on guitar, as well as guitar greats Coryell and Gomez, with the late Doug Rauch playing his unique bass style. There's funk for those that want to groove and jazz fusion for those that want to hear some great improvisational playing. The track, Prince of the Sea, is a standout in my opinion, and as a young drummer in the mid 70's it influenced me tremendously. You can't go wrong with this album and it should be part of any 70's fusion collection.
WAY Over The Top!.......2003-10-15
Unfortunately this album exhibits the most indulgenty musical qualities of Return To Forever but on the pounding
"Chicken-Fried Steak" White shines in true funky form. But
elsewhere the pickin's are thin.
