    Leonard Bernstein occupies a unique position in the music world for his protean, multi-faceted talents. His ability to draw on and absorb every cultural influence made him the ultimate eclectic, yet he eventually forged a style that was unmistakably his own. This record, which includes vocal, choral and instrumental pieces, some never recorded, performed or published, demonstrates that his Jewish heritage played a formative, lasting, decisive role in this process. The earliest, Psalm 148 (sung in English), written when he was 17, is steeped in an ultra-romantics style, especially Wagner's; it hardly contains a hint of the later Bernstein, but its innocent sweetness is infinitely touching. The longest, Halil, is a virtuoso piece for flute with piano and percussion, written 1981 in memory of a 19-year-old Israeli flutist killed 1973 in the Yom Kippur War. Also written for specific occasions and friends are Silhouette for Jennie Tourel's birthday and Three Wedding Dances for the marriage of Adolph Greene and Phyllis Newman. Excerpts from longer works include At My Wedding from Arias and Barcarolles, a description of a young fiddler playing for a wedding that is both funny and affecting, sung in Yiddish, a chorus from the ballet The Dybbuk, a section of Concerto for Orchestra. These, like several sacred selections--prayers, invocations, hymns of thanks and praise for various parts of the Service--are sung in Hebrew. The most substantial is Hashkiveinu, a prayer for peace, commissioned by the Cantor of a New York synagogue, for tenor solo, chorus and organ, featuring call and response, cantorial chanting and very daring harmonies and tonal juxtapositions. Bernstein later recycled some of this material for other, very different compositions, like films and musicals, perhaps indicating that he considered this style the connecting thread of his creative life. The performances are uniformly excellent; Réaux, Blochwitz and the pianists stand out. --Edith Eisler

            There are some great tracks and then there are the boring ones. You start off wanting to dance your booty, then get bored on the next track. It is worth the purchase though as there are so many tracks.

              I just bought this boxets two days ago and I can say it really satisfyed my musical hunger. I already have about 1/2 of all the tracks thanks to my spending in Global Underground releases and other quality discs... I believe that I'm going to give this boxset to my girlfriend. Anyway, if you do not have more than 1/4 of the tracks here then get it. The track selection is top notch since it covers the good side of the trance rainbow with a minimum amount of cheesey trance. There are lots of tracks that have been played by Seb Fontaine, Lee Burridge and other great DJ's on their visit to Mexico. Expect deep grooves, out of this world sounds and some glowstick anthems. For those that want to have great tunes with good, but not excelent, mixing at a great pric, go ahead and get this box. (I'm thinking of using this to convert those who hate trance... hahaha)

              I love this box set because it is full of great build-ups and charged with energy throughout! I particularly like CD 1, track 9 as it is quite trancy and dreamy without being monotonous. Despite there being few vocals, they are nevertheless very well chosen and mix seamlessly with the rhythm. track 11 of CD 1 is quite strong too...it is charged with emotion while remaining live and energetic.
              2nd CD, track 6 is also great. It starts off strong with sexy vocals later on.., again skillfully mixed.
              Overall, this box set is great for someone who likes 'moderate' trance tunes with clever mixes.

              3 out of 5 stars Decent Trance but not enough vocals.......2000-06-27

              Though some people like non-vocal trance, which I do sometimes, I lean more towards the vocal side of Trance.

              There is a pattern to these three discs. Throw a couple vocal tracks at the beginning to get you excited (Disc 2 "Sacrifice" is the best song of the bunch) and then reduce it to monotonous beats one after another. Most of the tracks, after the vocal ones, blend into each where you can't tell one from the other. I admit there are great intrumental trance anthems (Paul Van Dyk, BT, Ferry Corsten, William Orbit have had some killer tunes) but these were middle of the road trance.

              The only great thing about it is you get alot of songs for the money.
