Some may think the mixing is not so great on this album but it takes some getting used to. Good vocals and middle eastern sound effects make for a solid compilation.

Mucha Esquivel!.......2007-01-03
I was introduced to Esquivel from the movie Nacho Libre and the song Mucha Muchacha. That song is on here and I love it! But it also has music that is fun, original, inventive and way out of the ordinary. I like putting it on in the car and wigging out my teenage daughter and her friends!
Wild, crazy, campy, a great retro listen.......2005-10-15
There are two types of lounge music - the more laid back and dull orchestra kind (Jackie Gleason's work falls into that category) and the more surrealistic and wild space age stuff that holds up surprisingly well today as an entertaining listen (Esquivel falls into the latter category). Sorry for that run-on sentence, but its the best way I am able to describe the genre of lounge music. Esquivel's work is, along with Raymond Scott, space-age pop's true artistic statement. He had a sense of humor, which is apparent in his compositions. His music is truly out of this world - it sounds like nothing else in the lounge genre, or in any other genre all together. Most of all, despite the surrealism, this is probably the most accessible music in the space-age pop genre. Its great dancing music, and the only flaw is that it doesn't hold up as well on repeated listens. It certainly swings, and this is a must-have for any interested in the lounge genre.
Whatchamacallit, Esquivel?.......2005-04-25
After years of obscurity, Juan Garcia Esquivel finally received some recognition in the 1990s. Esquivel was a bandleader who played adult instrumental pop in the '50s and '60s. His music is more interesting than most other instrumental pop, because he used unusual instruments and had wild arrangements, many of which took full advantage of stereo seperation. This is the first CD of his music that was ever released. It is a great sampler of some of his best recordings. Give it a listen.
Classical Kid Reviews Esquivel.......2004-10-10
I have always been a fan of the off-beat, the unusual, from unknown classical composers to "bad" music (which is in the eyes of the beholder), which also extends to popular music. I was delighted when the retro-swing movement came about, and that meant that many old recordings were going to be resurrected on CD and I said, "I better get these while they are still out there"! Well, I bought many of those CD's, and I do not regret it! From a classical standpoint, Esqivel really reminds me of composers like Stockhausen and Ligeti! He really distorts pop music, slowing down tempos, using instruments that are unusual (such as the Jaw Harp and many others that he invented himself). His most famous trademark is his back-up singers, who say "Zu-Zu-Zu-Zu" or only say one or two words of a lyric while the instrumentalists take over the others while you imagine them being sung. Esquivel also wrote many pieces by himself, of which "Latin-Esque" is one. The sound quality is extraordinary. This is a big factor: if you listen with headphones, you can hear more of the stereo "spread"-xylophone glissandos surround you instead of just coming out of the speakers. CD technology has a way of making the old sound even better, and you can tell these recordings were made with love. My only criticism of these compilation CDs is the fact that there is duplication of certain numbers which of course overlap between CD's. Great notes by the amazing Irwin Chusid, who should put out a book of all his program notes from his CD's. A winner all around!
classic, creative and fun fun fun!.......2002-11-27
This was my first Esquivel CD even though I have heard a lot of his stuff for a long time! It is a great collection to begin with a lot of fun, classic and kitschy tunes (and nothing too weird for you novices out there). Putting on this CD is guaranteed to get you dancing whether you're doing the dishes or getting ready to go out. We've also used it for clever background music for theater sketches. (and don't let the title discourage all you bachelorettes out there, it works for us too!)

What holiday cocktail party would be complete without some zooma-zoom-zoom and doo-doo-doo to add to all of the ho-ho-hos? Take some Christmas classics, add a little retro sci-fi, hand it off to Señor Juan Esquivel and let him shake. (Or stir.) The result is still the same, as Merry Christmas from the Space Age Bachelor Pad turns every lounge into a swingin' Santa joint. The real highlight here is a reworking of "Jingle Bells" as only a masterfully hip maestro like Esquivel could achieve, with the help of some latter-day cocktailors from Combustible Edison. There's also a surprise cut, not a holiday classic per se, but a festive tune all the same: "I Feel Merely Marvelous," an old B side from Esquivel's heyday that was all but forgotten until now. Who knows--with the right mix of mistletoe and martinis, "I Feel Merely Marvelous" could become a seasonal favorite yet. --Steve Gdula
Customer Reviews:
Feliz Navidad, baby!.......2006-12-13
Esquivel is known today as "The King of Space Age Bachelor Pad Music". After years of obscurity, he experienced a revival of his eccentric brand of adult pop instrumentals in the 1990s (which were originally recorded in the '50s and '60s). In 1959, he recorded half the songs on an album called The Merriest of Christmas Pops (the other half were by Ray Martin, who faded into obscurity and has not experienced a revival). The six songs by Esquivel are good, although a few of them rely too much on a vocal chorus, instead of being in his familiar instrumental style. "White Christmas" and "Frosty the Snowman", however, are marvelous. Of course, six songs insn't enough for an album, so other songs had to be added. The winter themed "Snowfall" and "Sun Valley Ski Run" are a natural fit, and "Parade of the Wooden Soldiers" fits in with the Christmas toy thing. "I Feel Merely Marvelous" doesn't really fit in at all, but at least it's rare. Two new tracks were recorded for the CD by admirers of Esquivel, to which the Mexican Maestro added voice overs. These two new tracks serve as the intro and outro of the CD. Overall, this CD is quite enjoyable. Adios!

Ahhh, an acclaimed maestro of the bachelor pad space-age sterophonic revolution, whom recorded these YULEtunes during that genre's golden age between 1959 and 1962. Some preparative participatory preliminaries to add some zu-zu-zoom to your shared seansonal celebrations ; First get this disc spin'n ; Second fix a couple rounds worth of a complex libation to liberalise those libidos ; Third flix off all lighting but those a'twinkling ; Fourth snuggle down under the mistletoe with that special someone and let the sensations soar toward the stratosphere... bonk bonk , love those boots ~~~Merrily Mix~ 1%, 2$, 3#1\2, 4#1\2, 5#, 6$, 7#1\2, 8$1\2, 9$, 10$, 11$1\2, and 12% ~~~ Post Script: Hey let's not quibble about this artist's other projects and just compare this crafting with the mountainous monochroic merry mirth merchandized throughout this past millennium , even if your in the kNOw, I suspect you whould acknowledge this album as a pioneering YULEtide accomplishment and should cherish and share it's play often. If still a Seeker, welcome aboard this National YULEtide Treasure ride, it was different coming out of the 5o's, nowdays they don't bother to beat around the bush and lyrics have the liberty to be lewd. ***buyit*saveit*shareit*talkit*giveit*donateit to the local library*** YULEridGEMality Factor = 5
Esquivel was in a hurry this time.......2002-01-18
All right, so RCA wanted Esquivel to flesh out one side of a Christmas LP. He did it in a hurry and with fewer participants than you usually have on his recordings (the one exception is WHITE CHRISTMAS which was recorded on an earlier date than the rest of the compositions and features the whole orchestra BUT which has been butchered by Bar-None who LEFT OFF THE FIRST SLEIGH BELL NOTE. If you want a much better and complete rendition of this song, see SWINGIN' CHRISTMAS - Rhino 79998). At least Bar-None released this baby, which is NOT available as an import. And it is cool to have the man himself giving an intro and exit to the CD. Your best bet is to find a used copy of this cool Christmas CD.
Yuletide fun for the martini set. Yum!.......2001-02-11
Throwing a Xmas cocktail party and need some tunes to set the mood? Look no further.
The CD begins with a spoken word bit featuring the cheeky Esquivel himself welcoming you into his home and giving you a little "tour" of his pad. What follows is about 30 minutes of weird takes on Xmas favorites, with some of the sounds being pretty out there. Cheesy? Sometimes. Kitschy? Often. Fun? Always.
My only complaint is that it is so short.
It's better than they say it is.......2000-12-17
This collection of Esquivel's christmas music is NOT a cheap, thrown together affair. Some of the compositions are a little more traditional, but listen to Frosty the Snowman and the track right after it- Pure lounge, quality music.
I give it two thumbs up.

Esquivel has been such a hit with lounge revivalists that a sequel to Space Age Bachelor Pad Music was undeniable. Music From a Sparkling Planet inevitably carries a heavy load of kitsch, and rightly so. By any fair standard, Juan Garcia Esquivel's desperately spry arrangements (complete with "zoom zoom" vocals, blaring brass, and truly mind-bending steel guitar) were a product of their time. You almost feel like you should be eating a TV dinner off a TV tray while watching My Favorite Martian to fully enjoy this stuff. But you'll never hear a sprightlier version of "Boulevard of Broken Dreams." --Steven Stolder
Customer Reviews:
What can you do when your love's not true?.......2006-01-04
One of the best things to come out of the lounge music revival of the 1990s was the rediscovery of Esquivel. Esquivel released several albums of instrumental pop music back in the '50s and '60s, but unlike many of his contemporaries in the field of instrumental pop, his music is actually interesting. He experimented with oddball instrumentation and weird stereo effects, which make his records very fun to listen to (not to mention that he was an excellent arranger). This CD was the second compilation album of his material. It's not quite as good as the first one (Space Age Bachelor Pad Music), but it's still very good. The material is a bit weaker the second time around, but it still features some great tracks, like "Granada" and "Question Mark". The lounge music revival may be over, but Esquivel is still worth listening to. It's nice that he got to experience the renewed interest in his work before he died.
another great Esquivel starter CD.......2002-01-18
Bar-None really did a wonderful job on the booklet for this release. The tune selection is really fine as well. This is a great way to introduce yourself to Esquivel's world. But be prepared to want MORE once you become ensnared by the music!

....exotic. Probably the best value for this kind of "new world music"...excellent production, sound quality, and packaging. A dreamy trip to the East on a flying carpet...this set goes down deep, flies high, slows and flows sweetly...
I've collected this genre for 10 years, and you can either pay a LOT of money for an import by Claude Challe (France) or take a chance on this unknown brand. Personally, I recommend doing BOTH!

The cover of Other Worlds, Other Sounds says it all--like the woman in red dancing on a moonscape, this 1958 long-player was all about fantasy. And Esquivel, the legendary Mexican conductor-arranger and forefather to the entire lounge and exotica renaissance of the mid '90s, wasn't afraid to fantasize about his instrumentation nor the newfangled invention known as "stereophonic sound." Essentially, this is an entire album of standards played in a beguine tempo with a percussive orchestra and a humming chorus, but--under Esquivel's knob-twiddling fingers--the disc turns into magic. Voices ring back and forth between speakers, horns explode out of nowhere, and piano sounds cascade out of the stereo. This is what hi-fi was all about, and--though it was merely a precursor to the composer's even stranger sonic experiments--it's also one of his most cohesive albums. Four Corners of the World, a relatively straightforward piano-based lounge LP featuring Esquivel tickling the ivories, is also included here. For an even better overview of Esquivel's wild sonics, check out the compilation Cabaret Mañana. --Jason Verlinde
Customer Reviews:
Blastisimo from the past!.......2004-05-14
One of the first albums my dad bought to accompany his new HI FI!! in the sun-drenched, super-optimistic California of the late fifties. Our family is from Mexico---as is Esquivel---and, like Esquivel, my dad was a real non-traditionalist. He'd probably rip the Ivy off of college walls, and had the makings of a real lounge lizard. He loved everything modern, what today would be called retro--cantileaver furniture, etc. And Esquivel was, for all practical purposes, his life's soundtrack. The "zu zu's" on the samples bring back tons of memories. Check it out, swizzle a really dry, really cold martini, turn on the a/c and have a ball. This is the music to do it by.
Esquivel hits the states with a POW!.......2002-02-14
This LP, Juan's first American recording, helped to usher in the "bachelor-pad, stereophinic sound spectacular" demonstration music of the early stereo years. Yet his arrangements are all first class originals. Whereas many other arrangers resort to gimmickry (sound effects and such) Esquivel integrates unusual tonal voices with the standard big band/woodwind/percussion group. It is seamless and quite enjoyable. BUT MAKE SURE AND GET THE IMPORT VERSION. It boasts the original liner notes and, to my ears, a tape that is as least one generation closer to the master (maybe it is the original master). Bottom line is the import simply sounds fuller than the domestic release. It is definitely worth the few extra bucks to get it.
Lounge with a Twist of Strange.......2001-09-13
I enjoy Lounge music and exotica especially when the conductor/arranger is trying to experiment with new high tech stereophonic or Hi Fi sound. Ok so its nothing new to us now but back then in 1958 it was the latest brake through in recording technology. And Esquivel was at the time trying to use this new tech to its fullest by arranging the music not only to present the music in a unique manner as any other arranger would, but also thinking about right channel, left channel, fade in, fade out, and also both channels. I always suggest to anyone, who purchases any music from this time period, "have you listened to it wearing headphones". And truly Esquivel's music is not fully appreciated until it is heard wearing headphones. The music and arrangements are beautiful and Esquivel's piano stylings are unreal. This and all of Esquivel's work is a must have for any Lounge music fans.
Mexican genius!.......2001-01-25
This CD is pretty darn good. The songs on it are, I suppose, what would normally be considered cheesy, easy-listening standards. But Esquivel puts a slightly odd twist on the arrangements and in doing so gives them a hard-to-define, vaguely uneasy edge. And as a pianist, the man really does seem, at times, to playing two keyboards at the same time. Versatile bloke or what?
This CD actually contains two separate original albums, The lusher "Other Worlds.." followed by the sparser "Four Corners.." Legend has it that after Esquivel had recorded the "Other Worlds..." album with a bigger orchestra, he found he had 90 minutes allotted studio time left and so recorded the "Four Corners..." album using a stripped down ensemble (none of your "our new record took, like, 3 years to make and is, like, based on Orwells "Animal Farm", man..." approach here). Another great point is the use Esquivel makes of stereo, (as part of RCA's contemporary Living Stereo series) In some ways, this predates the experimental methods that psychedelic pioneers would use in the studios in the late 60's, and all this adds further to the slightly skewed atmosphere this CD generates. The whole conspires together (as least in my head, anyway) to produce mental images of early sixties Neil Simon-scripted films, usually starring Jack Lemmon, and probably set in Noo York. (I don't know why, tho'. It just does)
So, want a slightly more off-the-wall, atmospheric easy listening? Then Esquivels yer man...A genius!
I simply loved it!.......2000-07-14
This is the compilation of 2 albums. The first one "Other worlds, other sounds", features a full sized orchestra with the piano played by Juan himself (He is a self -taught pianist). Its arrangements are quite lively, and the arrangements and use of instruments is outstanding and original. The second album, "4 corners of the world", seems at first glance to be totally different. It sounds in some passages as a Jazz quartet with a lot of percussions. You have to listen to it twice to fully appreciate the piano player's huge skills- at times it appears as if 2 pianos were playing, but it is only Juan by himself! I don't think there's another piano recording as this. If you're new to Esquivel, try this for starters- it's a good entry choice. If you think you get with one Esquivel recording a typical sample of his sound- wrong. Every album I own has a distinctive sound of its own, as if it were recorded with different bands, that have had Esquivel as the leader and arranger. If you like this, no doubt you'll be hooked with the rest of his albums
