When he emerged in the mid-1980s at the dawn of new traditionalism, Lyle Lovett had more than a craggy visage to set him apart. His subtle wit, sly humor, and Texas-sized musical eclecticism made him a force. Built around 13 songs from his first three albums, this compendium resoundingly affirms those gifts. One hears his musical metamorphosis from the beginning, through the stomping blues of "Why I Don't Know," the honky-tonk talking blues "Give Back My Heart," and the folkier "L.A. County" and "If I Had a Boat." Nine numbers, including the Top 10 "Cowboy Man," appeared on singles (most as A-sides). The biggest oddities here are two newly recorded tracks, "The Truck Song" and "San Antonio Girl." They are Lovett's first new recordings in five years, and they share a nearly identical melody. Moreover, they really don't fit this context, though they may prompt hardcore fans to buy 13 songs they probably already own. Let's hope Lovett's working on an entire album where these two numbers will make more sense. --Rich Kienzle

It really does contain all of his best songs. Get your dancing boots on!

the quality of this cd made me purchase two more of his work

5 out of 5 stars Very Nice Compilation.......2006-02-28

Wow, what a great record. I too have most of Lyle's records. This is a very nice compilation. Of course, creating a collection of Lyle's work is very difficult and is bound to disappoint many: his records are so dense with brilliant music, it's very hard to pick among the tracks. This record includes many of my favorites, it's a very nice overview of early Lyle, and it shows why he is loved and famous. Couldn't get less than 5-stars for the music. Enjoy.

I haven't met anyone actually, who didn't appreciate Lyle's music. Hey, I like the Carter Family, Flatt and Scruggs, Johnny Cash, Bill Monroe, Bill Staines, Woody Guthrie, Doc Watson, Norman Blake. (And Queen, Lou Reed, Warren Zevon, Martin Sexton, Patty Griffin, The Gipsy Kings, Paco DeLucia, Pepe Romero, Glenn Gould, Pablo Casals, U2, John Hiatt, Hothouse Flowers, Bob Dylan (including the electric stuff), Pete Seeger, The Wailin' Jennys, Will Ackerman, The Who, The Eagles -- why the hell restrict your enjoyment of music?) That doesn't mean I don't enjoy Lyle very much too. Lyle's popular because his music and lyrics speak to very many people. That's pretty well the definition of success for a musician - making art that gets the message across. Nevermind the elitism purist BS.

I too share the worry that Lyle is in a slump. Hey Lyle, we are all anxiously awaiting that album of new material!

5 out of 5 stars Lyle at his Best.......2005-09-09

I love Lyle Lovette and have several of his albums and this is by far my favorite as it is filled with classic Lyle songs. Simply put there is not a bad song on this disc and you will find yourself listening to it over and over again, in fact it is the disc I currently have playing in my truck. No matter if you are a life long Lyle fan or are interested in adding Lyle to your collection, you cannot go wrong with this disc.

1 out of 5 stars Self proclaimed "cowboy man" creates amazing insomnia cure!.......2005-03-09

Ask yourself one thing: would real cowboys listen to this? Would "Tuco" or "Angel Eyes" from The Good The Bad and The Ugly listen to this? Or would they shoot the person who put on this pseudo-cowboy-pretentious-whining-grasping-desperate piece of musical feces? If you're a cowboy who drinks Starbucks and shops at Eddie Bauer, then ya, I guess this might be the cowboy man for you. If you like your "cowboy men" to sing with weak, unsure voices lyrics straight out of a 13 year old girl's diary, then ya, this might be your cowboy man. If you like cowboys who never sat their 98 pound frame on a pony, let alone an actual bull, then this is your man. In short, if you don't actually like country music, blues or folk, but got the idea that it was cool to listen to them, this might be your least painful solution. You can impress your friends and neighbors without venturing into the deep, scary waters of meaningful well-made music.

4 out of 5 stars "The weight" is over, pick this up and enjoy Duane's magic!.......2007-06-17

As the author of the Jefferson Airplane book "Take Me To A Circus Tent" and a former radio disc-jockey, I am often asked to write and or discuss various recordings from the 60's and 70's.

It has been a unanimous vote that the legion of Duane fans prefer the first Anthology. That said in no way does it desecrate the wide range of Duane's talents showcased on Volume 2.

Duane's brilliance can be appreciated even more once you get through a listen to both Anthologies. Many terrific players are locked into one style of playing and it becomes their calling card. The skill displayed by Duane is well noted but we never want to overlook how his talent went in so many directions. He could play the blues, country, folk, and rock but never did a solo or a rhythmic pattern feel inferior in one of those categories.

Duane's presence in a recording studio was good enough to push his fellow musicians into higher expectations. Listen closely to "Dirty Old Man." Lulu had a solid career in the U.K. (1960's) with her combination pop and rhythm and blues vocals. "Dirty Old Man" has her singing the blues and Duane providing the backing for her to confidently explore new territory.

"Matchbox" sounds wonderful with Ronnie Hawkins and Duane's excellent rendition.

"Walk On Gilded Splinters" from Johnny Jenkins is another highlight. Duane's guitar sounds as if it playing only for you. The entire 5:15 is captivating!

When the Duck & The Bear track "Goin' Up The Country" (It is the same song you all know and love from Al Wilson- Canned Heat) first resonates from the speakers you'll feel as you have been lassoed between the tweeters and woofers!

Even if the new math says "1 is greater than 2", two is pretty special!

Enjoy the music and be well,
Craig Fenton

Not as good as volume #1 but still amazing guitar playing and a great collaboration of other amazing musicians.

this one is not as good as the first volume but it still has good ole Duane Allman feel to it

4 out of 5 stars ESSENTIAL COMPANION TO VOL. 1, BUT NOT EQUAL TO IT.........2006-08-23

This volume doesn't reach the heights that the first one does, but it includes some very strong selections. Actually, I'm surprised that both volumes didn't have more songs from the historic "Layla" sessions. Gregg Allman once said that it was Duane's favorite recording session. "Born to be Wild" doesn't feature any significant guitar (Wilson Pickett shines here) and could have been left off in favor of one of the blistering lead guitar duels between Duane and Eric Clapton. The two songs from Duane's own aborted solo album sound great, and are a lot of fun. This volume digs deeper into the session work, and, of course, there is plenty of outstanding acoustic and electric slide guitar on this volume as well, served up the way only Duane could do it.
Definitely Recommended as a companion to Volume 1.

5 out of 5 stars As good as I remember it.......2006-07-04

I had this on vinyl, and really, really liked it. The album disappeared somewhere, and I was glad to find this. Duane Allman had an uncanny knack of being able to sing in many different styles, with many different people, and do them all well.

5 out of 5 stars I Love This.......2006-12-05

I actually grew up listening to some of Mr. Haugen's songs in church and he actually performed at our church a while back. Thanks to CD's like his, I can actually listen to songs I like hearing at church at home as well. I can't really say what favorites I have because I like all of his songs.

5 out of 5 stars hey haters.......2006-06-01

I grew up with Marty Haugen songs and NO MUSIC makes me feel more tied to the Church and community worship with fellow Catholics like his songs do.

I understand it might be difficult for the older crowd to accept that music changes, but I SELDOM sing along to any of the older, traditional songs at Mass because I can't relate to the sound of them.

Worship is worship. Praising God doesn't have to be ONLY in the traditional-sounding songs.

1 out of 5 stars Symptomatic of Destructive Trends in the Church.......2006-01-05

If you are 50+ years old and were a hippie back in the day, then you will love this album.

However, if you have a vital relationship to Christ in the Eucharist and find that you desire to be more like John Paul II than Mick Jaggar, then you will most likely know what it is like to suffer through an aging Boomer dominated liturgy having to listen to the banal diddies of Mr. Marty Haugen.

The vista of the transcendent ought to be reflected in liturgical music - simple Chant, Classical Hymns, and Choral music do this very well because there is no agenda in the music other than Beauty.

The music of Mr. Haugen betrays his agenda to re-make Catholicism into something that resembles the folk-hippy-holiness of the Boomer's drug induced "mystical" connectedness of their youth.

This music is the fruit of Woodstock and pot culture brought into the sanctuary.

Just listen to the free clips above and ask yourself, "In 200 years time, will the Catholic Church still be singing these songs and consider them 'sacred music'?"

Me thinks not.

Spend your money on some solid Gregorian Chant instead.

1 out of 5 stars You have got to be kidding me.......2005-12-07

On the old Amateur Hour, Major Bowes would have gonged Marty Haugen about five bars into his first selection.

This shamefully cheap stuff has infected Catholic churches for the last two decades.

Why won't we do better than this stuff???

1 out of 5 stars People Buy This Stuff?.......2005-11-19

Having been force-fed Haugen's pap on a weekly basis for many years, I cringe at the thought of a Marty Haugen CD. It boggles the mind that there is anyone so sadomasochistic as to actually pay money to hear his drivel. "Gather Us In" is one of the most atrocious hymns ever to disturb the air, and this is just one of the vapors of miasma permeating Haugen's anthology.

"And he opened the sixth seal, and Marty Haugen composed music for Bryan Adams"

To understand this review, take a look at the reviews of the other volumes in this series, particularly Vol. 4...
Some of the music on this series is so weird and beautiful that the composers should be grateful that it is released here. They should think of this series as a sampler which might atract us, the general public, into further investigation of their work, which we most probably would have never had the chance to hear or even become aware of its existence nor of that of the composers/artists. Don't be so greedy... for I believe you have been done a favor. The same goes for the other volumes of this series. TWO THUMBS UP!

      5 out of 5 stars jazzman.......2006-11-09

Yea, baby this is the real stuff. Bless you Soul Brother
Records for re-issuing these long lost masterpieces on cd.
Dr. Eddie Henderson (he's a psychiatrist) is a BAAAAAAD
      horn player. [...]. Most of
the Mwandishi band is here (minus Julian Priester on trom-
bone) along with Pat Gleeson twirling his electronic
knobs. It all meshes so well. So timeless and so forever,
it could have been recorded yesterday. Brilliant music
for open minds and ears. Pure perfection. You go Doc.

5 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece On CD At Last!.......2005-10-11

Realization is one of the most important works from the fusion era, grand in scope and vision, and flawlessly executed. More melodic and ethereal than Miles Davis at his best, Eddie Henderson's Realization has a spiritual center that the Prince of Darkness never achieved (though he came close in Bitches Brew and In a Silent Way). The backup band, essentially the Herbie Hancock band at the time, goes off the charts, and Henderson is ahead of them all the way. Arguably the most beautiful jazz album recorded. Also worth buying is Herbie Hancock's Mwandishi: The Complete Warner Bros. Recordings. Same band. Same sound. Same quality.

5 out of 5 stars Fusion-era electric jazz doesn't get any better than this!.......2005-03-13

Because the two albums that are reissued here -- combined in their entirety onto one CD -- have been out-of-print for so long, REALIZATION and INSIDE OUT are relative unknowns in comparison to the most acclaimed fusion-jazz era CDs by the likes Of Miles Davis, Freddie Hubbard, Weather Report, Herbie Hancock, and others. Yet after several listens to this collection I'm seriously pondering if trumpeter Eddie Henderson may have done the best job of them all in highlighting the strengths and creativity of the fusion era while avoiding its weaknesses and excesses. At the very least the albums collected here should be counted alongside the best 1970s efforts by those other artists I mentioned. It's great to have this music finally available in CD format.

Much of Herbie Hancock's Mwandishi band -- including HH himself on keyboards -- are in on these sessions. Yet given that Henderson wrote most of the tunes and has his own distinct ideas on how to focus the diverse textures that comprise this electric-meets-acoustic jazz approach, it would be unfair to look at these cuts as Hancock sessions issued under Henderson's name (as sometimes might be the case due for contractual or other reasons). As for the music, you get consistently brilliant playing by Henderson, equally strong statements by reedman Bennie Maupin, Hancock, and others, timeless instrumental textures (where you might find a combination of acoustic bass, fender rhodes, and synth washes blending seamlessly together), and a bold mix of funk and straight-up jazz rhythms. Despite all that is going on, there is a uncluttered sense of wide-open space on these tracks. Also, while the musicians are in a progressive frame of mind, the results should be easy-to-grasp for anyone who doesn't have an anti-electric jazz bias.

      5 out of 5 stars Absolutely fantastic.......2003-03-21

This is a brilliant CD. You'll think you have died and gone to heaven. If you love electric era Miles or Herbie Hancock's Mwandishi band you'll love this. (Actually this is the Mwandishi band!)

5 out of 5 stars Legal Stuff Apart.......2007-04-21

Some of the music on this series is so weird and beautiful that the composers should be gratefull that it is released here. They should think of this series as a sampler which might atract us, the general public, into further investigation of their work, which we most probably would have never had the chance to hear it or become aware of its existence or of the compsers/artists. Don't be so greedy... for I believe you have been done a favor. The same goes for the other volumes of this series. TWO THUMBS UP!

3 out of 5 stars Pieces you can't find anywhere else but the other reviews are right too.......2006-12-29

These are historic musical works some of which have never been made available to the public and are not available anywhere else. But the other reviews are correct, that the label is not doing right by the artists.

Sub Rosa Records was very friendly up until I sent them the master tape they had requested. When they said they wanted to use it I asked to be sent their license agreement. I never heard from them again. No license but they put my piece out on cd anyway. I asked a couple of times again but each time got no reply.

I doubt that anyone else with music in this cd series has received any royalties for the use of their work or will. We do, however, get to know that people are listening to our music, and that, not money, is what probably just about all of us created this music for. Someone without any legal right to do so is making money from this music, but the music itself can now be heard.

I'm marking this with 3 stars because that averages the good and bad of this cd set as described here.

      - Laurie Spiegel (composer of the piece "Sediment" on this release)

      5 out of 5 stars Copyright.......2006-07-06

The compiler of this series always makes great efforts to track down the copyright holders. Rather than leave off tracks for which he can't find the holder they are included in the "interests of art and music history". The text with the CD explains this, and invites that untraceable copyright holders make contact to fix any problems (or take legal action)

Please bear this in mind when considering buying this CD

      1 out of 5 stars Unauthorized release.......2006-05-27

This release contains a track by the Egyptian-born U.S. composer Halim El-Dabh which was used without his permission or consent, and for which he is obtaining no royalties. Please take this into consideration when choosing whether to purchase this recording.
