Congo-born, Los Angeles-based singer-composer-bandleader Lemvo has been mixing the guitar-driven form of rumba he heard growing up in his homeland's capital city of Kinshasa, with its Cuban forebears--five-centuries-worth of Spanish melodies mixed with African rhythms--for a very long time. For his fifth album, which is named for his newborn daughter, he has wisely concluded that "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." The result is a deliriously joyous batch of bold-and-brassy, accordion-laced, percussive, sinfully melodic hip-swingers sung in several languages, but not only in the expected Congolese Lingala dialect, French and Spanish. For example, "Serenata Angolana," with sultry second lead vocals by Cape Verdean star Maria De Barros, is interpreted in Portuguese as a tribute to Lemvo's Angolese grandfather. But "Elebette," while transformed into a slinky bolero, is performed in the original Turkish. If "Malambo," written by the late, great Franco Luambo, and Tino Baroza's '50s-vintage "Lollobigida" constitute a return to the old nabe, "Mentirosa," with its gently propulsive charanga violins and flute, is more redolent of Havana by moonlight. Among the talent on hand, stand-outs include legends like guitarists Papa Noel, Bopol and Huit Kilos, singers Nyboma and Wuta Mayi, and bassist Miguel Yamba, but this is to name only a few. Fans of Africando and Kékélé should definitely snap this one up. --Christina Roden
Customer Reviews:
Beautiful music to my ears............2007-06-24
I had heard bits and pieces of Ricardo Lemvo and Makina Loca in the past, but I had never really taken the time to listen to and appreciate their distinctive style(s) and the authentic touch they give to African salsa (Lemvo is from Democratic Republic of the Congo) as well as the other genres they play (boogaloo, son, kizomba, rumba, and bolero, among others). Their style is reminiscent of Africando, another wonderful band made up of a cross-section of very diverse musicians (from Mali and Cuba, just to name a couple of countries). The songs on this album are in Spanish, Lingala, Kikongo, Swahili, Portuguese, and Turkish [yes, I said Turkish]. Never have so many languages and types of music (and rhythms) melded so beautifully together.
Though, I was really a great fan of salsa music, and enjoyed learning about different styles, that isn't the limit of my musical scope and interest. This album starts out with the style of boogaloo, with "Kasongo Boogaloo." It's peppy and is modelled after the boogaloo music that originated in the Nuyoriquen (New York Puerto Rican) communities. Yet, it sounds different. What makes it so distinctive? Lemvo mixes the languages of Spanish and Lingala together, and the percussion sounds more rootbound to the African origins of Latin music styles we have come to know today. It has a great, earthy and organic feel. I also highly reccomend the beautiful boleros and heavenly ballad featured on the album ("Habari Yako," "Elbette," and "Serenata Angolana"). This album is gorgeous, people. If you haven't heard of Ricardo Lemvo and Makina Loca up until now, you will be a convert to their musical repertoire after listening to these beautiful songs.

Ricardo Lemvo and Makina Loca's second outing echoes their reputation as one smoking live band. Congolese born, but schooled in Cuban music from an early age, Lemvo explores his two loves, Zairean Soukous and Cuban Son Montuno, creating an original blend aimed right in the middle. Singing in Lingala, Kikongo, and Spanish, and backed by a band with arrangements leaning towards Cuba, Lemvo's rich African baritone leads through a succession of songs rich in both cultures. The title track refers to the African "mambo" meaning trouble, event, or gathering. You'll be dancing the mambo all through this hard-swinging release full of delights for both Latin and African aficionados. --Derek Rath
Customer Reviews:
Quite simply magic, astounding, wonderful !.......2002-07-23
I think many of these reveiws are very subjective, however I hope this is a fair reveiw, that's my intention.
Ricardo Lemvo is a breath of fresh air in music, his music is so interesting because, although it is obviously Salsa, his African background, seeps through in both his singing and also the content of the music.
He really brings together a wonderful marriage of Salsa, and African music. This is particularly interesting because in the Congo he would have been brought up in a style of music called La Rumba Congolaise, which was heavily South American flavoured, and it is fascinating that he is now exporting part of this 'Rumba' back into South American music !
He sings from the heart, but it is a joyful melodic singing, his songs are uplifting, he makes you feel good, you feel happy when you listen to his music.
You can not beleive that he is from the Congo in Africa, because his Salsa, is very Cuban in style, however once you know that he is African, it becomes very obvious in his music.
I am from Britain and have been brought up on a diet of pop and rock, my favourites were Jimmi Hendricks, Led Zepplin, Peter Gabriel e.t.c.
Ricardo Lemvo is the equal of any of them, he is a great.
I have been fortunate enough to have seen Youssou N'dour in concert, and now my biggest ambition is to see Ricardo Lemvo.
Ricardo when's the next album coming out ?
When are you coming to Britain ?
Upbeat but overproduced.......2001-02-10
I love the mix of Cuban and African rhythms and styles and the music is upbeat throughout, so that's why I rated it fairly highly. It would make good background party music.
However, the CD doesn't compel me to get up and dance. It just doesn't have enough energy or spunk. I think the CD is overproduced, so these guys don't feel like they are having as much fun as they should be!
FANTASTIC!.......1999-05-24
Great show at the Conga Room in Los Angeles, Sunday 5.23.99. This is my entry to win an autographed CD. hope I'm one of the 10.
Afro-Cuban music with el espiritu de la pantera!.......1999-04-10
Ricardo Lemvo, a Congolese musician who sings in Spanish with an African flare, successfully achieves some truly great Afro-Cuban music with Makina Loca. I picked this up in Puerto Rico, where I was told it's all the rage in Cuba. The first two tracks are the most fun.
From Africa to Havana to Paris..........1999-02-27
The beauty of Latin music comes from the blend, the mixture of African rhythms and European melodies, seasoned with just a bit of indigenous New World influences and Middle Eastern tones. Originating in the Caribbean, Latin music spread via migration to New York where it became Salsa and via trade to West Africa where it became Soukous.
Ricardo Lemvo & Makina Loca join Salsa and Soukous into a musical stew which takes Latin music to a new place. African musicians have been playing Cuban based music for decades, first staying quite close to the form, then substituting electric guitars for horns to develop Congolese Rumba and Soukous. Some, like Africando, have come back to the Cuban style, but it is really just copying, ala Linda Ronstadt's "Frenesi", faithful reproductions of the Cuban sound with little innovation. Lemvo and his band, now based in Los Angeles, play something new and unique, a music which has travelled back and forth across the Atlantic several times, accumulating lots of innovation on its way.
The music on "Mambo Yo Yo" can be characterized as mainly Cuban-style son montuno with trumpets (sometimes muted giving that "tropical moonlight" sound), driving piano, even a tres on many numbers. But then we hear the trap drums, the characteristic Congolese electric guitar runs and the occasional Kikongo and Lingala lyrics all of which combine to give us music which is interesting, entertaining, infectiously happy, good natured. Lemvo's personal touch reflects a lifelong love of Cuban music by someone who grew up in modern Africa and the musical melting pot of the US. The international band members (besides Lemvo, the musicians hail from the US, Mexico, Cuba, South America and the Netherlands) led by musical director Niño Jesús Pérez complement each other well on this album which will make you want to find out more about Salsa and about Soukous...but not until you're done dancing!

Don't waste your time, this is a must !!!!!!!.......2002-01-25
For anybody who loves Salsa or African music. This guy is unbelievable, an African that can sing Salsa better than any South American ! it's impossible ! You better believe it !
This Salsa is also fused with African influences, as many of the songs end in La Rumba Congolaise style, with beautiful guitar playing and melodies. Also his band Makina Loca (Crazy Machine) has a very talented versatile Cuban arranger in Nino Jesus.
Believe me this guy is not real, he is completely unique ! I am still waiting for his next CD !
A must-have for lovers of Congolese or Cuban music!.......1999-10-26
This CD presents a magnificent, seamless blend of dance-able Cuban and Congolese sounds (leaning a little more towards the Cuban on most tracks). From the stellar guitar work of Cameroonian guitarist Louis Wasson to the lively flute work of Nino Jesus Alejandro, this album never ceases to please and amaze. Blazing congas, powerful horns, fantastic guitars, and soulful vocals make this music come alive and will get your feet moving!
thsi music is full of fire and passion. that cant be matched.......1998-10-08
the music that is presented in this amazing cd is filled with a full spectrum of various cultures. Ranging from hot latin beats to african high-life. This multi-cultural cd will most definately appeal to many walks of life. The name of the cd is Tata Masamba. Alone that song will surely go platinum. Ricardo is a multi lingual artist and excells at grasping the attention of the different societies of languages in which he blows his tune. I personally have been honored to have seen this group perform on many occaions. Not only do they sound great but they also put on an amazing and exciting show.

La Makina... A Mil.......2003-08-13
First off I like to say that just like the other reviewer says you will not be dissapointed with this cd from La Makina. I bought this cd for the song Mi Reina. That was a hit song they had in 97. The whole is is very good. Differnet from there other cds but great. When the group first started Anthony Maldonando was on this cd also. Now he is on his own. He has 2 cds solo. This is not the first cd I bought from theme. The first cd I bought from theme is Para El Bilador in 1999 and this cd won't be the last. I think that Para El Biliador is thre best cd but if you are new to La Makina I think you should bye this one first because its also very good. You will enjoy it. Me I have all 5 of there cds allready. I bought theme the same year they came out. I come New York but I like music from PR and DR and NY. Grupo Makina Rocks and so does thre first cd.
Mil Y Mas!.......2000-02-25
This group is just awesome. If you like merengue and like to dance you will love this group. My favorite is 'Negra De Chocolate' and 'Chispa'. You wont be disappointed.

Congo-born Ricardo Lemvo and his super-sexy red-hot multiracial band Makina Loca smoke! Taking Afro-pop to an all new high, Lemvo and crew have been said to be the future of salsa, and don't you know it's true! For 10 years these fellows have been bringing down the house in their home base of Los Angeles and on the world's most popular Spanish-speaking television variety show, Sabado Gigante, as well as points from D.C.'s Kennedy Center to San Francisco's Great American Music Hall. Swinging as hard as a John Henry-wielded hammer, as tight as a pair of Levi's in 1978, and with as much sass as any redheaded debutante, Lemvo's third release, São Salvador, kicks the band's signature blend of soukous, rumba, and son into high gear, outshining even 1998's critically acclaimed Mambo Yo Yo. The funk infusion of "Nganga Kisi" recalls the Cuban and American soul invasion of Lemvo's native Kinshasa; the political title track borrows from the mournful Portuguese ballad tradition; and "Si Tu No Sabes," featuring a blaring horn section, blends soukous with merengue. People, get ready! --Paige La Grone
Customer Reviews:
Great music, short album.......2005-03-12
I bought this album wondering how the african music would combine with latin music. Having listened and hating Mundo by Ruben Blades I was hoping for something better and Ricardo Lemvo gave it to me.
While only a few of the tracks are actual danceable salsa, each and every one felt great. The combo rhythm songs have a great sound and good melodies even if not well suited for the dance floor.
The only bad thing here is the CD only has nine tracks with 40 minutes and it left me wanting for more.
Music for a Sunny Mind!.......2004-05-17
Walking down a busy Seattle sidewalk on a sparkling spring day, I heard the strains of "Ave Maria (por Dios)" blasting out of an African import shop. I did a hard left into the doorway, and promptly bought the CD out of the player. It has not left my rotation since. I love following the diaspora of ideas, cultures, tastes in tunes from the Old World through Africa to the New World, noting how the music takes on the spice and heat and urgency of the new place in which it takes form. But this is something completely new, reversing the typical colonial direction back to its roots. And doing it brilliantly! Try this CD. Crank it up on a sunny day. As the dred-locked gent in the Seattle shop said, "This is happy music. Everybody needs this now." Amen!
get dancin.......2001-05-17
OK, having heard a lot of latin artists over my lifetime, since I grew up in the Caribbean and South America, I will tell you This album is IT!
Ricardo brings his music to us in a kind of reverse Afro-Cuba evolution, since he is from Congo, but does Cuban music better than most Cubans! His mastery of several languages comes through in a common theme of meltdown rythym and soulful lyrics.
Brilliant!.......2000-10-20
I have lived in Africa for 10 years, used to live in Colombia and continue to visit Latin America regularly. I like many types of Latin and African music and have a reasonable collection of both. I find this CD brilliant, joyful, uplifting. A beautiful blend of distinct Afro-Cubano music. We first learned of Ricardo Lemvo from a music video of Mambo YoYo on local television, but we think this is the better of his two albums. (Mambo YoYo is only very very good!) We bought this while in the States and played it endlessly during countless hours of driving. I can't remember doing that before! And we continue to love it. Of course, musical taste for most of us is extremely subjective, but, for us, this album is a real winner from start to finish.
He Does It Again.......2000-07-12
Last February I happened to visit a giftshop where they were playing his Mambo YoYo CD over the loudspeaker. The music automatically took me to a warm and fun place -- even though it was cold and snowing outside! Of course, I bought it and didn't take it out of my CD player for weeks. It is worth of repeat play. This CD does not disappoint. It still has all the lively grooves and mix of musical rhythms that I discovered on Mambo YoYo. I was also lucky enough to see Ricardo at our Latino Festival last month here in Columbus, Ohio -- for FREE! He and his band are awesome and I highly recommend this CD.

Even though not better than their 1996 debut disc "A Mil", this album is better than their other albums. This disc has 10 merengues, 1 salsa, and a bachata. All their merengue tracks are great. On track 6 , they pay homage to the founders of Merengue "Bomba", Los Hermanos Rosario; and all the merengue artists from PR that keep that style of merengue alive.
Pal bailador.......2000-09-27
I love merengue and the songs on this CD are good, but it needed more fast songs. The best songs to dance to are Carino, Ritmo bomba, and no me digas que no. The CD realesed before, Los Reyes del Ritmo has more fast songs and is a great CD as well.
Bailandolo!.......2000-02-25
There is a salsa, bachata, and I believe a qumbia. This production shows alot of growth from the group. The merengue on this is great. They really went out on this one.
You want merengue? You have definitely got it!.......1999-12-13
The title says it all: just play this CD and merengue will fill your head & legs! I rated this CD with 5 stars, but I have to say I am a bit biassed, because I heard this CD for the first time when I visited Costa Rica in November/December of this year and my memories of this 'paraíso' melt with the music of the CD. Although the musicians from 'La Makina' originate from Puerto Rico, I can tell you that this music will do in any part of the world, especially if you're looking for happy merengue tunes to dance on. For me personally, particularly the first song, 'No me digas que no', and the second song, 'Ojos café', touched me deeply and made me relive my Costa Rican holiday. The songs are somewhat similar to the song 'Píntame' by Elvis Crespo, to give you a slight idea of what I am talking about.
'Dedico este CD a Mario, quien me ponía en contacto con esta música y además a todos los merengue aficionados en cualquier sitio del mundo!'
