Arkansas, home to ex-Nighthawks guitarslinger Jimmy Thackery and his friends and guests Earl and Ernie Cate (guitar and keyboards, respectively), is nicknamed "the Natural State." But the natural state for these three musicians is really somewhere between traditional blues fervor and knuckle-busting guitar hypnosis. This disc kicks in with the latter: "Out of Mississippi" is a big-bottomed, blustery riff-fest. Yet two tunes later they're adopting Muddy Waters's "I Got a Rich Man's Woman." Thackery's slide whinnies with a sensitivity near the old master's as the Cates paste down a powerhouse Chicago shuffle. And so it goes, ricocheting between the past and present. They summon the spirit of fellow Arkansan Junior Wells in "Snatch It Back and Hold It" and "Hoodoo Man Blues." But the most emotional number is Thackery's flood ballad "Levee Prayer," which is all restraint and subtle six-string colors until the finale, when his dark-toned solo enters like inexorable waters to claim the song. The disc ends with Thackery's "Tell Me Goodbye," a paean to '50s sock-hop rock that's got a chordal guitar break as sweet as his innocent lost-puppy-love lyrics. --Ted Drozdowski

Album Description

Blues guitar master Jimmy Thackery teams up with fellow Arkansans, the legendary Cate Brothers, to celebrate their beloved home on In The Natural State. Infused with a sharp, crackling blues energy matched by the Cates' innate feel for down-home rhythm and blues, In The Natural State is a guitar lover's dream - complete with the fiery solos and stringbending blues-rock only Jimmy Thackery can deliver.

Thackery's first album recorded in Arkansas, In The Natural State isn't just the name of an album or an allusion to a geographical place; it's a way of being.

"I put all my senses on hold and find the zone and follow what's inside. There's an electricity from your mind to your heart to your fingers. You just try and remember to breathe." - Jimmy Thackery'

"A musical masterpiece!" - Mike Huckabee, Governor of Arkansas

5 out of 5 stars Another One To Love.......2007-07-06

This is my sixth JT cd. There's two I don't love, but this one I do. I liked most of what I heard from the sound bites, but you know that's not always reliable. The reviews went from one to five stars so I was a bit skeptical. I opted for the buy and am glad I did. Most of the songs have a familiar ring to them but done with a different feel, kind of like listening to both versions of Eric Clapton's Layla. The fact that this cd was done in four days gives it a raw natural feeling. This sounds like pros doing what they love. Every note is on time, and like good blues, the next note is just what you expect to hear. This cd may move up to just below Drive To Survive and Wild Night Out on my list.

1 out of 5 stars In the Natural State, my review from Barcelona.......2007-05-10

I'm totally disappointed by this bad JIMMY THACKERY's album. You may think I'm exaggerating if you listen to the first theme thinking this is going to be the worst of the record, because it is not bad at all. And the second tune, "Arky shuffle", is a good blues as well. So you start thinking: "What a good record I'm going to listen to!". But you're wrong. Only this second tune and perhaps another blues like "I got a rich man's woman" can somewhat save this little disaster. The tune "Ain't that a lot of love" is no more than a bad imitation of Stevie Winwood's "Gimme some loving" although he performs a good solo guitar there and on the rest of the themes I'd rather not comment, mainly because we are talking of the great JIMMY THACKERY, a phenomenal guitarist and very good music, one of the best, ex leader of the marvellous NIGHTHAWKS and responsible for a large and very good discography. I very much like most of Jimmy Thackery's records, but not this one, I'm sorry, don't waste your money on this record unless you are an absolute Thackery's fan like I am.That is my opinion.

5 out of 5 stars Great Well Rounded Blues.......2006-12-19

I don't know about the negative review. I could listen to this over and over. If you love guitar, Arky Shuffle and Howling for My Darlin really groove. Levee Prayer is a great song. This album has a good mix of Thackery and Cate Bros influence.

5 out of 5 stars Terrific tunes all the way through.......2006-08-23

I saw this group not too long ago and was instantly impressed.I have all of their CD's and I admit I was initially hesitant to purchase this one, but well, I thought, I love the other ones, how can I go wrong. The ripping, pulling you into every song was apparent from the onstart. The versatility so appreciated.I am sincerely moved by the song, Levee Prayer, lest anyone forget what hurricanes can do!I sincerely believe that you just would not be disappointed in any way. A true great set of tunes.Go for it,you'll definitely be glad you did. When I have that moment of,'what do I listen to'I grab 'In A Natural State' and am always glad I did.

5 out of 5 stars another great Thackery release!.......2006-07-07

Teaming up the Cate brothers and Jimmy Thackery was a brilliant idea. This disc is a true feast for guitar fans. All of the musicians really cook here, and since it was recorded live in the studio it has a nice raggedy feel to it. True, there is nothing original here, but these guys infuse these songs with their own unique styles. Pay no attention to any negative reviews, this one's a winner!
P.S. I never buy a CD until I listen to soundbites either on line or in a store. This way I'm never disappointed.

Although double albums are again de rigueur, the mercurial Shocked pushes the envelope on her first release in four years. Fully free from major-label duties, Shocked picks up where the quasi-gospel vibe of the limited-edition Good News left off (even reprising a few tracks) and delivers the most expressive singing of her career. She fuses deep Southern funk, Jamaican dub, ambient country-folk, and socially and sexually conscious soul (à la What's Going On) with poignantly confessional, faith-based lyrics. "The more I forgive, the more I forget/Let it go, let it go," she consoles herself. The sprawling instrumental companion disc, Dub Natural, has moments of artistic surprise (especially the supernova blues rock of "Draughts of Dublin"), though it rarely finds the purpose and spiritual poise of this set's main attraction--Shocked's ardent singing and gleaming, inspired songwriting. --Roy Kasten

1 out of 5 stars Long and dull.......2007-01-28

This album is bad. Which is a shame because Michelle Shocked has always been an automatic purchase for me. No more.

I don't know if it happened in the mixing, the recording, or with the instrument choices, but whatever it is, it ain't good. The music is the audio equivalent to pouring porridge through a sieve.

And since she's found religion, her lyrics have gone from razor sharp attitude and storytelling to just bludgeoning us with a club that is both patronizing and wearisome. She's always written about stuff that is important to her, but she did it in a voice that captured my attention. Now it just turns me off.

It is hard to believe this is the same artist that wrote "Anchorage", "Prodigal Daughter", "Memories of East Texas", and "The Cement Lament".

1 out of 5 stars Disappointment.......2003-08-02

I really liked her album "Short Sharp Shocked" and still do, but this one was a waste of money. I listened to it twice and probably will never again. Her religious and "preachy" fanatical overtones are annoying. There is not much more to say.

4 out of 5 stars A Little Sophomoric, But Very Solid Stuff.......2003-05-19

Truthfully, this isn't really my type of music, but all things considered, it's really good. The only reason I heard this CD is because I had a chance to meet Michelle Shocked and she personally handed me this CD, which she told me she packaged and shrink-wrapped by herself. I've since seen her perform at one of the local clubs in Los Angeles, and I remember seeing her on the Dr. Phil show protesting the military action against Iraq.

I have the benefit of knowing this artist and what she stands for and believes in, so that's why I can appreciate her music. I know the deeper, spiritual, social, and political meaning behind the lyrics in her songs. However, if you're someone who just happens upon the CD at Blockbuster Music and listens to it simply for its musical value, you might not like it. In my personal opinion, this is a good CD to play in your car on an extended trip so you can listen to the whole thing all at once. There's really no one track on this album that stands out above the others. I also have the companion CD called Dub Natural, which are the same songs as Deep Natural, except without the lyrics. I think both of these CDs come together in one package. That also is a nice CD to listen to, because you really get a feel for Michelle's ability as a musician.

5 out of 5 stars Shocked gets religion.......2003-02-27

I have a very short personal list of musicians whose CDs I always buy. She was ABOUT to fall off that list until she came out with Deep/Dub Natural.

In my opinion, about Shocked's only flaw is a tendency to preach and as she matured, she made that mistake a few times.

Not in this album! Like her early music, the lyrics are poignant yet nuanced. But, she has broken out of the folk mode without giving it up completely.

Clearly she has had some encounter with God and she uses that as lyrical focus. But don't think this is some boring Christian album. She NEVER falls into cliche even when she re-interprets a song like Amazing Grace. That song, for instance, breaks your heart and renews at the same time.

Great stuff. And don't neglect Dub Natural. I like it maybe even better than Deep Natural. I know that Shocked wasn't the first to do a re-mix second disk, but not many have done it better. It really works -- "Dub" has the feel of "Deep" but is not a needless duplication. I play Dub Natural more than "Deep".

I also hope this CD will open up her audience beyond the folk singer-songwriter crowd. She deserves it. Unfortunately, I doubt this release will get a lot of promotion. Good reason to buy it, though - play if for friends and they will think you have the good taste to not follow the masses.

5 out of 5 stars who is Michelle Shocked? She's incredible!.......2003-02-26

When my local paper ran a review of Deep Natural, I had never heard of Michelle Shocked before. It was an incredibly glowing review, though. So, I decided to splurge and take a chance and pick up the cd. I popped it in my cd player and sat down. The album opens with Shocked belting out a short acapella song titled "Joy". This song would later be used as part of "Can't Take My Joy". My jaw dropped. "Joy" was powerful and just gave me a little chill. It just felt special, that the album as a whole was going to be something very special. It is.

Even though Michelle Shocked can use her voice as a powerful instrument on songs like "Good News" and "What Can I Say?", she still effectively sings "Psalm" when she goes softer. The range that Shocked can use her voice as an instrument is incredible....as is her gifts as a musician and songwriter. I was completely blown away by Michelle Shocked and she is now one of the few that I will recommend without any reservation.

2 out of 5 stars I can't believe it's been that long.......2006-10-05

While cleaning out the garage I come across some tapes that my sister had stored there from the 90's. Recognizing most of the names; Vanilla Ice, R.E.M., Wilson Phillips etc. etc. I then came across "Natural Selection." "What's this? I don't remember them." So I dust off and plug in an old RCA dual tape/record player to start playing side A. Not bad, so I continue to clean.
Now in the 90's I was more into birth of alternative music but perhaps for the sake of nostalgia an appreciation for the music manufactured and over played on the radio was forged. At the end of the day the garage was almost clean and the tapes quickly placed on eBay, but the songs remain stuck in my head.

4 out of 5 stars Still not bad.......2004-10-19

I'm surprised we didn't hear more of Natural Selection in the early 1990's. I was in high school when the CD came out and was drawn in by the single 'Do Anything'. 'Hearts don't think they feel' was also a single. After high school I studied piano, percussion, and composition in college and after all that, I still think this is a decent attempt at pop music and I've held onto it even though selling most of my other early 90's CD's. There is an obvious Prince influence throughought the album and the hit single had to compete with Prince's 'Cream' from the Diamonds & Pearls album. If 90's music is ever to become a 'genre' like 80's music has, I recommend Natural Selection as one of the most noteworthy, but overlooked, works of the early part of that decade. At the used prices it is worth hearing.

3 out of 5 stars Natual Selection.......2003-04-22

Not bad... Standout song of course is the hit single featuring Niki Harris (famous for being Madonna's backup singer & releasing 3 of her own albums:see nikiharris.com) but this cd lacks in some areas...with mostly filler music sounding like scraps from Prince, they still pull it off because scraps from Prince is still good music! Neither here nor there.

5 out of 5 stars 256-Soul-you had to be there.......2002-01-18

This album is what they mean when ya hear the term old-school. This Album was the bomb when it was released. one half of the songs are beautiful with my favorites being natural high, spinning around, and dont turn around. If you want to hear old school, listen to this group. Interesting history too, look it up!

2 out of 5 stars natural high.......2001-06-16

very disappointing when compared to "go on and cry". song selection is very poor. "natural high" is really the only worthwhile song on the cd.

4 out of 5 stars Raw, but darn good........2000-03-05

This group caught my eye when I saw them in a movie Trainride To Hollywood circa 1980. Have no idea why neither the soundtrack nor the film is currently available to buy. It was a fun musical film with great music, and I got the soundtrack back then and enjoyed it.

I also got Natural High, and still have a CD of it. It is raw early 70's R+B with warts and all. My own personal opinion is that Never Let You Go is the best track, and one of my favorite tunes. Very upbeat, with good funky rhythms on the Fender Rhodes. It is preceeded in what I always thought was a very interesting way by Ran It In The Ground.

The song Natural High was covered, I think, by the Commodores. Tarrentino used the Bloodstone version in one of his films, Jackie Brown I think it was. The CD cover discusses the emotions the group had in recording the song.

To be honest, there are only one or two songs off this CD that I really go for when I put it on. That could lead to a three-star rating, but I guess I'll give it four.

It would be nice if the soundtrack and the movie of Trainride to Hollywood could somehow be released again. It wasn't the best film I ever saw or anything, but it was fun and I don't see why it's not available to listen to. They covered a lot of different genres in it, like covering "As Time Goes By" and "Yackety-Yack". Maybe Tarrentino could make it happen. Maybe amazon.com could look into it.

5 out of 5 stars Twelve Fingers Workin' Six Strings.......2006-06-27

Hound Dog Taylor was born polydactyly - he had six fingers on both hands. One night in a drunken impulse, he cut off the extra digit on his strumming hand with a razor blade while leaving his fretboard hand with all six.

For that reason alone, Hound Dog Taylor is the baddest MF to live in Chicago since Al Capone. While "Scareface" had machine guns to fire off in the streets of The Windy City, old "Eleven-Fingers" had his raw voice, gritty guitar, punk boogie, and sad stories to lay down on the streets of The Windy City.

5 out of 5 stars Dirty.......2006-04-07

All I gotta say is this is some of the most gritty, raw, rockin' boogie blues I've ever heard. The guitars on this album are loud, dirty, nasty -- where can I get this tone? You can't buy it. Well, you can if you buy this album.

You got wax in your ears? I gotta cure for you: Listen with headphones on to You Can't Sit Down -- the guitar in the left channel -- that'll jar it loose.

5 out of 5 stars Oh my goodness..........2004-11-29

I can't tell you how strongly I feel about this album. This is awesome! This is one of the more outstanding examples of the "boogie" blues style. My favorite tracks are "You Can't Sit Down," and "Sadie" although its a little like selecting favorites among your children...ultimately, you love them all very much. This makes a tremendous addition to any blues collection.

4 out of 5 stars Buster's Boogie.......2003-09-28

What?!
I couldn't think of a title which made sense.

Anyway, "Natural Boogie" (which should probably have been spelled "natch'l") is Hound Dog Taylor's second album, and it rocks with at least as much fire as its predecessor.
Taylor and his Houserockers, drummer Ted Harvey and gritty second guitarist Brewer Phillips, lay down a superbly groovy rhythm on "See Me In The Evening", one of his very best songs, and they do a fine take on Elmore James' "Shake Your Moneymaker" (retitled "Roll Your Moneymaker" and shamelessly credited to Taylor himself!).

Other highlights include the unusually low-key "Sadie", and a great cover of another Elmore James-tune, James' Chess-single "Talk To My Baby (I can't hold out)".
Not all of the handful of instrumentals on this album manage to keep one interested for very long, and there isn't excactly a lot of musical variation here, but when it all gels, "Natural Boogie" really rocks, and the three-man band dig some deep grooves.
3 3/4 stars. Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Don't get any better than this.......2001-08-11

This was Hound Dog Taylor's second cd and it goes from 0 to 100 mph in a few seconds! This is the most electrifying ,boogie blues album made; Just doesn't get any better than this!

5 out of 5 stars T-Connection at their very best.......2005-12-01

I was completely oblivious to the existence of T-connection until "Girl Watching" brought the group very firmly to my attention. Relying entirely on the radio DJ's choice of tracks meant "Girl Watching" and "Goombay Time" were all I knew of T-connection, but so impressed was I with the former track that I felt my collection was incomplete until I had this album! I purchased a copy of this CD mid 2005 - about 20 years later!!

The biggest difficulty I find with the 'oldies' is that tracks you were not into at the time, or were simply not familiar with have an even more difficult task of winning you over in the later years because they sound somewhat dated and obviously do not have that "good ol' memories" card to play! In otherwords, they have to be VERY GOOD to impress!

Well, this album stands up to this scrutiny and more!!

"Pure & Natural" has been quite an eye opener for me regarding what T-connection is all about!! I had the group down as uptempo disco beats but I now stand corrected. T-connection are actually better at the mid-tempo stuff! - and that's got to be saying something!

"The best of my love" is superb and has a timeless ring to it - the sort that you simply love forever. "A little more love" does not disappoint and "Slippin' away" is simply outstanding!

If the reader is going to pick ONE T-connection album to add to their collection from a list that includes even the ubiquitous "best of" compilations, then "Pure & Natural" would be my uncontested recommendation.

Pros: Not a one track album! Excellent composition, timeless melodies, superb mid-tempo and slow tracks and if that is not enough, features "Girl Watching"!

Cons: May not suit those after uptempo "dance classics" only.

This group For Real ...was in a class of Envoge..their vocal styles were beyond touching..like Envoge....trying to match such vocals would and is hard these days...lack of promo's killed this group..but their vocals will live on ...wonder where they are?

3 out of 5 stars I was trying to remember this group...........2004-07-29

Remembered the song "you don't know nothing" cause I liked the ending where they broke into 4 part round-the rest about them is a blur.....

3 out of 5 stars For Real Was For Real.......2003-09-13

For Real formed in 1993, releasing their first album, It's a Natural Thang, one year later on A&M Records. This female R&B quartet struggled to hit it big; "You Don't Know Nothin'," hit no. 88 on the billboard hot 100, no. 80 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks chart, and hit no. 21 on the Rhythmic Top 40; "Easy To Love," hit no. 65 on the R&B/Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks chart; and "You Don't Wanna Miss," struggled as well. But this shouldn't destroy these singles credibilty, For Real have wonderful old-school vocal harmonies, which lift the album. For Real was just another female quartet that got lost in the New Jack Swing, Club/Dance, Urban mix, and suffered from lack of promotion like most groups did in the early to mid-90s.

5 out of 5 stars A HIT!.......1999-07-25

This is a great debut albu

3 out of 5 stars born to sing........1999-01-15

though they entered the market at a time when girl groups were a dime a dozen and poor promotion was a death sentence, for real is definitely the real deal. covering musical styles from zhané to the jackson 5 to miki howard, necia, t, josina and wendi exhibit exception skills and harmonies that easily put them in a class with en vogue and brownstone. one listen to the acapella "you don't know nothin'" leaves no doubt that for real's lack of recognition is through no fault of their own. thoguh this album doesn't have any real stand-out tracks, it makes for pleasant listening.

3 out of 5 stars No wonder in Natural Wonder.......2007-01-28

It would be futile to disagree in what we all know: Stevie Wonder is one of the greatest musicians American music has given to the world. His natural talent is beyond recognition. He is a true musician. Performer, composer, arranger and producer all in one. Nevertheless this particular work which portraits two concerts (maybe too big of a places) falls somehow short from what I was expecting and mostly due to a weak performance by the musicians chosen to support Stevie Wonder. He outplays his crew by far. But his talent and energy doesn't cover the lack of fire in his band. It's a wasted opportunity. Who knows when Stevie will record live again. Althought I believe an unplugged record with a smaller group of musicians could work exceptionally well for this remarkable artist and recreate in a new dimension many of his original compositions.

5 out of 5 stars SUPER WONDER.......2005-10-11

Lo voy a decir en pocas palabras que entenderá cualquiera que hable español: no es una broma, Wonder es el músico negro con más "visión" en las últimas décadas y no tener este álbum en vivo es privarse de un trabajo impecable.

5 out of 5 stars SHOULD HAVE BEEN A GRAMMY-WINNING SMASH!!.......2005-04-06

Why this album wasn't a major, major hit for Stevie Wonder just
mystifies me. It's the first and only live album of his adult
career, and it is simply awesome. This is absolutely one of the
best live performances I've ever heard, right up there with "Judy
At Carnegie Hall", "Band Of Gypsies" by Jimi Hendrix, the
"Woodstock" soundtrack and any number of live recordings by
Joni Mitchell, the Stones, Aretha, Ella, James Brown, Bob
Seger, ANYBODY. Stevie's pipes are in amazing shape and his
performance is positively exuberant. Someone who has been
around as long as he has could have easily just gone through
the motions and still delivered a good show. But Big Little
Stevie gives his all and then some to the point where you wonder
how he does it! Not really a "Live Greatest Hits", this is
more a "History Of Stevie". Many of his biggest hits are here,
especially on the second CD, but so are some album faves and
lesser known gems. All are delivered with passion and buckets
of soul. The opening 1-2 punch of "Dancing To The Rhythm" and
"Love's In Need Of Love" will leave you breathless. It really
is that great. And the addition of the strings to an already
fine band is the icing on the cake. If you like Stevie you will
LOVE LOVE LOVE this CD!!!

5 out of 5 stars One Of The Greatest Live Albums Ever Made.......2005-04-03

1995's "Natural Wonder" captures the raw energy, unbrideled passion and undeniable excitement it feels to be at a Stevie Wonder concert. This is something few artists can do at their concerts. Stevie Wonder is one of those few. On this two disc collection (culled from his 1995 "Conversation Peace" tour), wonder performs 24 classic songs with all the skill and soul you'd expect from Stevie.

Stevie truly pours his heart into his songs. Just listen to the passion he puts into songs like "Love's In Need Of Love Today", "Stay Gold", "If It's Magic" "Ms. And Mr. Little Ones" (a new song when it was released and a personal favorite) and "Overjoyed". And naturally, Stevie isn't afraid to have a little fun, funking it up on "Sign Sealed, Delivered I'm Yours", "Sir Duke" and "I Wish", as well as transforming the tender ballad "Ribbon In The Sky" into an almost nine minute jazzy jam.

I was also glad that Stevie decided to revive several lesser knowns gems such as "Pastime Paradise", "Another Star", "Village Ghetto Land" and "Rocket Love". These songs stand well against concert warhorses such as "Higher Ground" and "Superstition".

My only gripe is basically the one another reviewer said, and that's that several songs ("Master Blaster (Jammin')", "Living For The City", "Another Star") were a lot shorter than the original versions. Usually when you go to a concert, you expect the songs to be longer than the studio versions. But I won't fault the entire album because of that. Also, I noticed the list of songs that reviewer would have liked seen on this album is the same as mine. But again, I won't fault the entire album for these minor complaints.

This is an album that I think everyone should own. Also worth picking up is "At The Close Of The Century" and all of Stevie's studio albums, which are among the greatest albums of all time.

5 out of 5 stars The Closest Thing to Being There!.......2005-02-27

For those of us that live in the "boondocks" where artists rarely or never appear, "live" recordings provide us with the stadium or concert hall experience.

"Natural Wonder," recorded in both Israel and Japan is, as the title implies, a stupendous performance by one of the 20th century's true geniuses. Backed by the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra and a band featuring instrumental heavyweights Nathan Watts, Darryl Jackson, along with others, the Motown legend delivers with an intensity that makes him the envy of his contemporaries and his successors.

The album begins with "Dancing to the Rhythm," a highly charged tune that has Wonder's mellifluous vocal instrument matched by an outstanding Paul Riser string arrangement. This song, along with "Stevie Ray Blues," and "Mr. and Mrs. Little Ones, are previously unreleased tunes but they meld seamlessly with his more familiar hits.

And what hits they are!!!

The Academy Award-winning "I Just Called to Say I Love You". The pop/R & B smashes "My Cherie Amour," "Signed, Sealed, Delivered, I'm Yours," "You Are the Sunshine of My Life," and so many others.

One would have to be six feet under to not be moved by "Rocket Love" or "I Wish".

The album may be ten years old but Wonder's music is timeless, still resonating with soulful passion as they did when they were first heard.

And that makes Stevie one for the ages!

4 out of 5 stars great stuff.......2007-01-21

First off, I'm surprised there are so few reviews of this cd and on this guy. I only heard of him through a collaborative work he did with Maria Maldaurr and Rory Block called "Brothers & Sisters" which I strongly recommend if you are a Bibb fan.

He's a great musician and in time I'm sure his lyrics will get better. Some are just so predictable but he's got the right sentiment(s) and his heart is there - front and center.

I don't know why this is so different from other works - I've only heard Painting Signs but haven't yet had a chance to really LISTEN to it. I think I need a road trip, endless scenery and a good sound system. But for here and now -- man, he had me hooked from the first song.

I've got too much stuff also, but not enough music. I need to hear more of Mr. Bibb. Don't forget to check out Sisters & Brothers, I think it has the BEST version I've heard so far of Don't Let Nobody Drag You Down. I hope he's as nice as he sounds.

5 out of 5 stars A voice that is smooth like butter!.......2005-04-23

I went on a very long car trip with only this CD. I thought I would get sick of it but instead I kept on singing to it as the miles rolled on. I now count two of these songs as my all time favourites. Eric Bibb really grows on you and this CD is great because there is a real mix of nice slow easy listening songs and toe tappin, spoon smacking, good tunes.

4 out of 5 stars More Good Stuff From Bibb!.......2003-09-27

Natural Light is a slight departure from other Bibb releases and contains some nice smooth jazz/blues tunes such as "Home Lovin' Man" and "Tell Riley" as well as some very good ragtime, soul, zydeco and some spiritual stuff all mixed together. The CD consists of 13 tunes with 10 originals and 3 covers, Randy Newman's "Everytime It Rains", Jon Randall Stewart's tired "Circles" and the out of place, "Higher and Higher." Interestingly, Bibb's original compositions are so good that they overshadow the weak cover selections rendering those covers to mere filler on the disc. Bibb's vocals are as soft and soulful as ever and the performance is excellent. The disc could have stood alone with just the original compositions.

5 out of 5 stars Superstar Material .......2007-01-10

Tanya does an amazing job on Natural Thing (1994)Superstar Material & Voice (*****)
She should have hit the charts with greater success, obviously. Let's hope she can return to the R&B/Dance spotlight by recording some new material. Influences include Whitney Houston(on No More Lies), Ce Ce Peniston (on Natural Thing) Plus plenty of her own magic. Though The Rain,For The Right Reasons, Love Ballad, and Baby Love really make this package rock!
Tanya's voice is magic! You'll love all or most of this disc.

5 out of 5 stars brian.......2005-09-19

this is on of the most greatest albums i brought i never knew she have even done a cd up until recent when i heard through the rain i love it from the moment she started sing i love her from sister act she have a really powerful voice differs somewhat from whitney but alot compare to her vocal style on of my favorite song there is i don't wanna spend another nite that note she hits at the end of the song great just tonya if u out there i would love to record a song with u girl hopefully that day will come soon

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2005-03-26

You can say she really has a Whitney-voice. So strong and beautiful. "For all the good reasons" is just one of the many beautiful songs on her album. She has soul, she has a message and she should have recorded much more. Today you can still catch her as a singer of Christian songs. Don't miss !

4 out of 5 stars Fabulous debut! .......2004-09-20

Ten years ago this past summer, I bought Tanya Blount's only album that she made. I was just blown away by her voice! I heard Through the Rain and immediately got her album. I also liked Hold On and her remake of LTD's Love Ballad. The other songs are just as solid a mix of smooth ballads and uptempo dance tunes. She sounded mature for her voice on these songs. I thought that her next album was going to come on Sean Combs' Bad Boy Records, but it never happened. Maybe the deal failed or something. I just imagined Puffy producing most of the album and maybe Mario Winans, Stevie J, Ron Lawrence and others on there. Would have been a hot album. Never took place. Tanya, if you're out there, you made a solid album and I wished that it would have been promoted a lot more. Shame on Mercury Records for dropping you off their roster--they missed out on a quality, soulful album you made for them!!!!!!!

4 out of 5 stars A NICE START.......2003-09-30

Tanya Blount was in SISTER ACT II, where she performed a stellar version of "His eye is on the sparrow"(with the great Lauryn Hill)

She has a strong voice and is enthusiastic. "Through the rain" is the big single on the album. It is a tender ballad and shows her to be a talented vocalist for her age at that time. The song features background vocals by Stacey Lattisaw! Tonya does a rousing remake of LTD's "Love Ballad". A song that is not easy for just anyone to remake. She does a splendid job. Another catchy single "Im gonna make u mine" did not fare as well, but is just as good nonetheless

Other standout tracks are "Is it Love"?, a duet with Freddie Jackson and the song "No more Lies". A truly talented singer who should definitely find a home on a label that believes in great singers. She should be heard and you should give her a listen!
