About the Artist
Filament 38 was conceived in the fall of 2001 by Ash. The idea was to create dark electronic music focusing on mystique and imagery by combining the feel of late 90's darkwave with the mechanics of the industrial genre. Shortly after a couple songs were written, Creep joined up to handle mixing and production. A series of raw energy live shows and an early demo led the band to a recording deal with Chicago's Negative Gain Productions. In December 2002, NGP released Fractured. F38's full length effort was described as dark, gritty and mysterious. The achievement quickly gained the band notoriety with the club hits Recollection and Sacred. In 2003 and 2004, the band played many live shows promoting their debut album. This resulted in Filament 38 sharing the stage with such scene greats as Covenant, Razed In Black, Haujobb, Hocico, Decoded Feedback, and Imperative Reaction. In 2005 NGP presents Filament 38's sophomore effort, Unstable. This release hits with 13 tracks of stomping beats and fierce synths. With remixes by Imperative Reaction, Terrofakt, and label mates Cruciform Injection, Unstable solidifies Filament 38 as a driving force in today's electro- industrial scene.

Product Description
Unstable walks the fine line between classic EBM and modern day harsh industrial creating a new grey area in the electro-industrial world. Featuring the soon to be club staple Interface and the thought provoking Ideology, Unstable will no doubt be a classic. With remixes by Imperative Reaction, Terrofakt and Cruciform Injection, Unstable solidifies Filament 38 as a driving force in today's electro- industrial scene.

5 out of 5 stars Not as Good as Their Debut.......2007-06-15

Adema's sophomore release, Unstable, is a good listen but not as good as their debut. It seems like they are trying to expand on their sound and even trying out the modern-rock ballad here and there (So Fortunate, Let Go, Do You Hear Me). Like their debut, the actual music (in my opinion) is good as far as instrumentation is concerned. Mark Chavez's vocals do fit well with the music although his vocals seem even whinier on this release. As far as the lyrics go, don't expect much. Mark's lyrics may be personal but not at all the greatest.

Standout Trax: Co-Dependent, Rip the Heart Out of Me, Promises, Blame Me, Needles

2 out of 5 stars One hit wonder........2007-01-12

This CD is completely pushed by the song, "Unstable". All other songs are blander, mainstream-ish types, and the other track, "Immortal", is a lyrical disaster. I mean, it is simply repeating "You can't kill me, I'm immortal." - Like it's a revelation to people, that the word "Immortal" means unable to be killed. Overall, this CD is only good for that one song. If you have an Ipod, Buy the track, if not, simply disregard the rest.

3 out of 5 stars What happened here?.......2006-03-16

So this isn't the worst CD ever made but it's far from the best, and it's far from their debut. The first single 'Unstable' is a great song, and 'Promises' although feeling a little forced is still decent...but the problem here is that other than 'Rip the heart out of me' (which is still not great) the rest of the CD falls flat and becomes very forgettable. They had so much promise with their debut that for this album to come out with no support and dismal sales and then to really (for lack of a better word) suck the way it did is sad. So now they've dumped Mike (the singer) and thats probably for the best since his voice just doesn't fit. I know what you may think...he sounds just like Jonathon Davis, but Jon makes it work and Mike just couldn't...Anyways, it's sad they had to go out like this...I hear that 'Planets' (the bands effort without Mike) is decent, but still not much success is coming their way. Oh well. Maybe next time.

4 out of 5 stars Adema's last good album........2005-03-28

Well I've listened to the new Adema album, Planets, and it's just not the same without the lead singer, Mark Chavez. The new singer's voice doesn't have anything that draws your attention like Mark's does.

Anyway, I believe Unstable is Adema's greatest album (and most likely last greatest). People complain about lack of depth in the lyrics; however, this lack of depth makes it easier to relate with situations in your own life. The best songs are:

1. Co-Dependent
2. Rip the Heart Out of Me
3. Stand Up
4. Unstable
5. Promises
6. Blame Me
8. Stressin' Out
12. Needles

I'm sorry to all of the hardcore Adema fans that slag off this album but come on this is ace! so much better than their self-titled album that they released a few years ago. musically adema have moved on lightyears and now they actually play music that is in time with each other an in the same key. i highly recommend this album

5 out of 5 stars Superb instrumental fusion.......2006-07-30

I am shocked I missed out on this band until now. Unstable Matter is their fourth album, released on the amazing Canadian prog label Unicorn Digital, and judging by the quality of the songs on this disc, I need to explore their earlier stuff. Spaced Out is arguably the most surprising band I've discovered all year.

So what do they sound like? First off, they are an instrumental band, consisting of three members. They play a signature mix of jazz meets fusion meets heavy metal meets avant-garde if it makes any sense. Their previous efforts are said to be more in the jazz field, but Unstable Matter has plenty of metallic riffs on it. Exuding intricate chord progressions, the songs are highlighted by lots of improvised guitar licks, incredibly well-played bass lines, out-of-this-world drumming, and the occasional synth effects. Antoine Fafard is the primary songwriter of the band, and he plays bass, guitar and is also responsible for the programming. It was only after checking the liner notes that I realised Spaced Out is one of the most impressive bands in the world producing impossible bass lines with thick guitar harmonies strung across. The bass playing is ultimately important to this album, considering most of the songs were developed solely around this instrument. Fafard's playing is not only unique, but impossibly complex, ranging from insane finger picking to slap bass solos to quieter chords to crushing heaviness.

Second guitarist Mark Tremblay lays down the solos, of which "New Breed" and "Event Horizon" demand your full attention to understand what's really going on. Packed with Meshuggah-precise riffage and chord changes, along with incessant kick drums, "Event Horizon" is merciless in its delivery. Blended with great synth effects, the machine-gun riffery is all the more effective, not to mention the lead solo. However, "New Breed" is the real deal. Lots of synths in the intro, it delves into fusion jazz territory before taking on a funky bass that merges with insane drumming. The dynamics of this song are amazing, ever shifting between calm and busy passages, and climaxing with a solo that sends shivers down the spine. It's a long yet very well-executed solo and it slowly disappears under a wall-of-sound mix of synths, bass and rhythms.

"Art Attack Pt.1" and "Art Attack Pt.2" are more on the laidback side, yet only within the context of this album. Spaced Out's "laidback" work kills others' most challenging stuff. The first part is a heavy and complex number with improvised jazz guitars exploring various dynamics and unusual rythmic patterns, while the second one boasts deft percussion and glistening cymbals before a clean Gordian Knot-like passage emerges out of nowhere. Think Ron Jarzombek's solo on the first Gordian Knot, only more daring and more unconventional.

The album's best representatives have to the title track for its intense mix of avant-garde textures and full-on jazz attacks, not to mention the ever-present bass and drum battery; as well as the seven-plus-minute "Big Crunch", living up to its title. Though the overall mood of the song relies on dense synth shimmers, underneath that layer functions uncontrolled chaos with erupting guitars, heavy breakdowns, and octopus drumming. I cannot praise Martin Maheux enough. It is very rare someone will blow me away both with his immense chops and taste rhythmic groove. This guy has it all, as he fearless goes from double bass drum explosions to unusual rhythmic patterns that would give Tool's Danny Carey a run for his money. No kidding, this guy is a monster behind the skins.

There are also shorter material in the form of "Glassosphere IV" and "Singularity", the former being a symphonic piece underpinned by fierce finger-picked bass and the latter is driven by an addictive syncopated drum pattern, combining bipolar melodies and marrying them into a single soundscape.

Although very different from anything else I've heard, fans of LTE, Planet X, Derek Sherinian, and the Mahavishnu Orchestra should waste no more time to give Spaced Out a listen. By the way, the packaging of this album is possibly the best I've seen this year: excellent graphics, superb paper quality, and amazing pictures.

Last but not least, the production is masterful. Antoine Fafard deserves a medal for his work.

          Album Description

Since day one in early 1997, Twenty2 have been rocking stages all over Canada with their unique skate-style of punk rock. Months after their first performance, they were asked to open for top national acts such as Blink 182, Good Riddance, AFI, No Use For A Name, Diesel Boy and more. The band decided to record an EP to help get their name out, so they released Winter Sucks in February 1998. After its release, their popularity quickly grew, and they were approached by a number of independent record labels. Soon after, they recorded their first full-length, 'Porn Rock,' for Springman Records. In November 2000, they released a new eight-song EP called 'Keepin' Busy' on Lameass Recordz, licensed for U.S. distribution by Springman Records. Months after its release, Twenty2 found themselves touring with national acts including Propagndhi, Cigar and X-Large. With the end of 2002 quickly approaching, the band signed with New School Records and released their full-length! 'The Dudes Of Hazzard' in November 2003, which gained them national television exposure throughout Canada on Much Music and Musique Plus and landed them on tour with Ten Foot Pole.

Twenty2's new CDEP is going to rock your world with six new tracks pumped full of enough raw energy that you'll be ready to hit the skate park with full force. Very tightly composed, fast-paced tracks fill this disc from start to finish. Perfectly delivered angry & emotional vocals and lyrics go hand in hand with technical bass lines, stunning guitar riffs and complicated drum beats. This release definitely shows that Twenty2 has a successful future ahead of them. Highly recommended to fans of ALL, No Use For A Name and Good Riddance.

          5 out of 5 stars a very stable molecule............2001-01-11

.....i really like this cd a lot. it combines very heavy free jazz with the universal indie rock sound of chicago. although i could pretty much guess what this sounded like before i heard it, i'm very excited about the outcome. it's very laid back and soothing while at the same time exciting and new. i love the usage of the bass in these songs. some even have really kickin' beats(always a plus for me). this music sounds like what a lot of dj's try to portray when they spin, but you get it here in a live band. check out the songs, "kryptonite smokes the red line" for it's mellow drones and cool vibes. "la jetee" for it's smooth beats and nice groove. "phonometrics" for the funk. all in all a very solid album. give it a try, you won't be let down.....

2 out of 5 stars Sorry, but I just can't get that excited by this!.......2000-12-12

I'm happy that the reviewers here find so much in this release but I think it needs a contrasting review to warn others (like me!) who might be tempted to dive in based solely on their recommendations.

If you (like me!) are old enough to have lived through the courtship of jazz and rock in the late sixties, this release does not sound that special. To give you some signposts, I am reminded at various times of Zappa's "Eric Dolphy Memorial Barbecue", King Crimson's "Happy Family" and Manfred Mann Chapter Three's first album. All of these, interestingly, date from 1969/70. There's even some wah-wah guitar on one track.

There are some modern touches, of course; the overall feel is probably best described as "post-jazz" in the same way that the laid-back "noodle-music" Thrill Jockey tends to release is categorised as "post-rock". At this stage, I can't accept this as a milestone release musically. That's not to say that it may not be influential in some way, of course.

I've docked them an extra star for the length - 31 minutes for an effectively full price release. I see the Japanese version manages to include two more tracks which double the album length! What's the story?

5 out of 5 stars accesible, brilliant, and fun.......2000-08-12

this cd has basically all the good qualities of a high-quality jazz album with all the brilliance of the percussion that we have come to expect from tortoise. even if it is only 31 minutes long, it is the type of album that catches your ear the first time you hear it and then continues to impress you for years to come, as its more subtle elements will impress you ever time you listen to it. even if you don't like jazz, think tortoise are excellent but boring musicians, and hate instrumental music, you will still enjoy this record because it is just that good. a warning in closing; the other two albums by isotope 217 are NOT as accesible as this one, so although i would advise you to buy this one without even hearing it first, borrow the others from someone first (or listen to them quite a few times from this site) because they do not have the immediate album of this album even though they are equally good.

5 out of 5 stars Another approach to revitalize the Jazz idiom.......2000-03-31

Isotope 217, another outfit coming from the incredibly fertile grounds of Chicago, offers in this release a near-perfect formula to translate the vast Jazz heritage to contemporary styles. The mix of intimate, confessional jazz passages with electronic collages met a rare balance in this recording, thanks to an extremelly competent production. Rob Mazurek's work on cornet only enhances the final product, and the transitions between old an new are seamless. This proves that bringing jazz to new audiences can be done without the poor pastiche concocted by the mundane acid-jazz crowd. Give it a try, you'll be surprised.

5 out of 5 stars Better than Tortoise.......2000-01-13

And that's saying a lot! Isotope 217 includes members of Tortoise as well as others and the sound is vaguely similar, although much more jazz-slanted, especially on this debut. The free-jazz sounds of the first track along with its tension chords make it a great opener, but it's really "La Jetee" that makes this essential: purely blissful, laid back listening. Those into the post-rock scene will not be disappointed by this release as Isotope 217 are among the best out there.

                Album Description

Hailing from Melbourne, Australia, ninetynine combine indie rock stylings with tuned percussion and layerings of casio keyboard to create a unique kind of pop music. Variously described as "wonderful" (Melody Maker) and "versatile and talented" (Australian Rolling Stone) the band originally began as a solo project for Laura MacFarlane (the original drummer for sleater-kinney) in 1995. Ninetynine's self titled debut on patsy followed soon after as well as tours of the U.S., New Zealand and Europe. In 1997 long time collaborator Cameron Potts join the band just in time to appear on the release of the "767" album on patsy. Further tours of North America and Europe occurred in 1999 and 2000 in which ninetynine toured such countries including as the U.K., Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, France, Switzerland, Canada, U.S., Germany, Poland, Czech Republic, Lithuania, Latvia and Finland. In 2000 nintynine released their third album "180 Degrees" on radio one and patsy to local and overseas acclaim.
