Five-star artist and five-star release gets a 4-star CD.......2007-02-25

OK. I haven't listened to the American Beat version yet - it just came in the mail 10 minutes ago, but it's interesting that the CD cover DOES list the Ian Hunter Band members, but there's no liner notes whatsoever in the single gatefold-like CD insert - just song titles and songwriters. This seems to be the exact opposite of the Import (UK version), which people say has liner notes by Ian Hunter but no mention at all of who was playing with Hunter that night during recording.
Also, the American Beat version (U.S.) shows pics of Hunter's band on the back of the CD insert, with Mick Ronson apparently cropped out of the frame (he is seen standing next to Hunter onstage.) Odd, being that this was a Hunter-Ronson release, and Ronson's such wonderful contribution and importance to Hunter's music in the 1970s. They should have featured a shot of Ronson in the booklet (he is seen on the back of the CD jewel case with Hunter, in a small, blue photo.) Oh well, at least the CD is finally here in print in the States.
(The Mott reissues last year are good, especially "Mott," despite a horn goof near the beginning of "All the Way From Memphis." Also pick up the double, 30th anniversary import of "Mott the Hoople Live." It smokes most bands out of the water.

Different band, same direction.......2007-06-18

With a new band lead singer Alexakis take the group in a slightly different musical direction. While the lyrics are the same familiar style of previous albums the music is more creative and less powerful than their previous work. Still, when needed they punch out emotional and hard rocking songs like "Hater" and "Taste of Hell". I found this album really grew quickly, but it took a few listens. Unlike many who have reviewed their music I feel that they are getting better with every release, creative yet true to their style. Standouts for me are "Now", "Hater", "Drama King", "Glorious", and "Portland Rain". Each song is creative and brings something to the table. I remember cranking their music over 12 years ago in Seattle and it's nice to see them continue growing as a band. True fans will not be disappointed.

RETURN TO FORM.......2007-03-30

This is their best since so much for the afterglow. There are some weak tracks especially the single Hater. I really hate that song. Overall it's really good album. I reccomend it. I think Drama king is my favorite track. Glorious, Clean, Broken, Portland Rain are great songs too.

I was surprised to have found this album. I thought after Slow Motion Day Dream (which in my humble opinion was horrible considering the Volume 1 & 2 releases prior to it).

So Art finds some new band mates that give the Faded Everclear some much needed Sparkle.

I think this is a great return to form & one of my favorite albums by this group, it's got that raw edgy feel but with maturity & musical growth.

Hater - is the typical single you would expect from this band but I like many do not deem it my favorite.

The real Stand outs are:
*The Drama King ("losing my mind, nothing seems right, don't know who I am anymore, losing the fight, I hate my life, I wish that it was easier to be in love") Excellent work Art. Guitars are so cool on this!

*Glorious - Wow, some what of a recycled start from a previous album but when it kicks off, you tend to ignore such a small glitch, love the Guitar lead into the track..."you were shining in the white light, like a fairy-tale movie star, never really thought I would find snow white in a downtown bar...I could never believe that you wanted to be with me") - This definitely is a great track!

*A Taste of Hell - Everclear really get funky on this one & most notable track on the 12 track, great to turn this one up - the best track on the album, again minus the intro...this one we find Art at his best in lyrical form "the awful truth is that you broke my heart, yeah now I'm gonna break yours too...I know I will forgive you when I give you a taste of hell" - very well thought out track musically!!

*Broken - a bit more laid back, a bit comforting to tell you the truth for anyone that's faced hard-times, again with excellent lyrics: "I wish I could push a button & make the pain all go away, wish I had the magic words but I don't know what to say, take the wasted years & throw em all away, might sound easy/simple for me to say, you are going to find a way to fix what's broken...all those big dreams that were so important, they don't mean anything know, all you need is love, love is all you need to fix what's broken."

*Arizona Room, but this should not have been a track shared by Art's daughter Annabelle towards the end where there's some weird stuff going on, Annabelle - please don't make your Dad put your music on his CD's when the man is trying to reclaim rock status!!!
"Sometimes it is easy to believe that a broken thing can never be whole, just another night in a hotel room, another bad dream...every time we talk I find another piece of the puzzle in me that I never really got to know." Noteworthy is the more punk-rock tune, hidden track at the very demise of the disc.

But all in all, there is something for every one on this disc depending on what type of Everclear tune you as a Everclear Fan prefer, if you are looking for more of a Volume 2 hard-edge rock feel than the track Under The Western Stars is right up your alley - the amps should have been turned up on that one as it sounds a bit more like a B-Side.

If you are looking for more of the pop side than: Now, Shine & Shameless Use of Charm will do it for you.

If you are looking for some of the quieter mid-tempo moments: Portland Rain & Clean (which is Art's tale of father-hood woes it seems) are going to be for you. These 2 tracks are a bit more reminiscent of the 'Sparkle & Fade' Era. However I feel the tracks Portland Rain & Clean are a bit weaker in comparison to the rest of the album.

All in all - a good re-birth for a band I hope produces more fantastic music that Art & his new musical comrades are capable of. I think this is more of an A grade to A- effort, surely their next will supersede all expectations & reclaim their place in a world full of bad Good Charlotte & other Pop Artists Teeny Bopper music.

A very nice surprise.......2007-03-15

I was fully expecting to hate this CD. I love Everclear's oldies, but honestly, could find nothing I liked on Slow Motion Daydream. In my opinion, the better part of the content of that CD was crass, and most of the rest just wasn't very inspiring or creative. Therefore, I figured that Art had just run out of steam...once he had exhausted his supply of songs focusing on drug abuse (Sparkle and Fade, So Much for the Afterglow) and relationship issues (Songs From an American Movie), I wasn't sure what else he could write about - bankruptcy doesn't seem like a very appealing subject. :)

I'd listened to Hater online and really didn't think too much of it - kind of repetitive and sounded like it could have come off Slow Motion Daydream, but after reading the reviews here, I realized that those who were slagging this CD were actually slagging the band, not the CD (see my comment in response to one). Think what you may of the band, but this is a review of the album, regardless of the make up of the band or your views on Art Alexakis. So, after seeing them live recently (they rocked!) and liking Portland Rain live, I bought the album in the hopes that I'd at least get a song or two that would be listenable.

It really is an easy CD to listen to first time - something that's hard to achieve in anything but a radio-happy sell out. Subsequent listens take you deeper and deeper into the layers of the songs, and the content is definitely there. What I'm enjoying about this album is that the characters have been developed. The Drama King is reminiscent of some earlier songs that demonstrate empathy for the female perspective (Amphetamine and others), while the confessional Now shows a personal growth I haven't seen in Art's writing previously. Portland Rain, while a beautiful demonstration of longing, maintains its angry edge and doesn't descend into self-pity. Clean is a touching plea to his daughter, and one that most parents can relate to - wanting the best for their child and hoping like hell you don't let them down.

For the most part, Art seems to have got his head together, but then, we've all thought he's done that before (as he's probably thought also). There's definite growth in his writing on this album, and musically, this is a creative, diverse offering. Maybe that's thanks to the new line-up, or maybe it's Art back on track. Whatever, it's good - the larger band definitely gives the album a fuller sound without turning to fluff.

I guess my only gripes are the name and cover - I mean really, how cliche? If you can get past that though, you'll enjoy it - well, until you hit Annabella's truly horrid and cringe-worthy rap/harmonica piece right before Your Arizona Room. I don't know what Art had done that he had to make it up to his 13 year old daughter by giving her a "silent" track amongst the actual CD (seriously, Art, could you not have let her do it after a 10 minute silence after the last track or something? No, Art, it isn't cute, and she isn't that talented...why don't you sponsor her own CD so it doesn't screw up yours?), but it is terrible. Annabella, sweetie, if you're reading this, I'm sorry and keep trying to create music, but don't make your Daddy put it on his CD when he's trying to make a come back, ok?

Right, now that's out of my system, my overall impression of the CD is that this is a worthy return to form after the dismal Slow Motion Daydream. Welcome back!

I love it when you call me baby, baby.......2007-02-04

I first heard "Hater" around June or July of last year and couldn't wait for the rest of the album to be released. I have to say that I was and still am a little bit disappointed in "Hater" and agree with some who say that it is the weakest track on the album. But, it still has a great point and some amazing lyrics. Of course this is NOT the old Everclear, duh, it has new members so therefore a NEW sound. You cannot have success without change, and frankly, I think this change is for the better. Everclear has grown up, I believe. It is less teenage rock and more mid-life rock about having children, disappointment, and divorce. Tracks like Portland Rain and Your Arizona Room are my favorite. They are sad yet so incredibly meaningful, it's Art singing your life. This album is refreshing and truly a new, respectable sound for the band and for all that so called music that's out there now. This isn't something you'll hear churned out on the airwaves and that's why I've always stuck with Everclear, three or five. If you want OLD SCHOOL Everclear, listen to Colorfinger and stay in the nineties. "Welcome to the Drama Club" is music for today and tomorrow.

Welcome to the Pleasuredome is the first of two albums from Frankie Goes to Hollywood, an outfit that was to the U.K. what Vanilla Ice was to the U.S., in the fact that their time in the spotlight was both brief and unforgettable. The band wasn't just popular in 1984, they were downright gigantic. Upon being banned from the BBC, their first single, "Relax", would spend several weeks at # 1, only to be followed by their next single, "Two Tribes", which would become one of the biggest singles in U.K. history. Both of these songs would eventually become popular in the U.S., with "Relax" becoming a Top 10 hit. Then after their following album, Liverpool, hit the charts for about a cup of coffee, they were gone. Also like Vanilla Ice's hit album, To the Extreme, Welcome to the Pleasuredome was pretty much a studio creation, in this case masterminded by former Yes member and producer Trevor Horn. The production is very impressive for its era; it's perhaps the best sounding `80s album that you'll ever hear. However, unlike To the Extreme, Welcome to the Pleasuredome, while clearly reminiscent of the era with its heavy synth and the Ronald Reagan impersonator, still holds up well. Also worth noting is that their frontman, Holly Johnson, was a very charismatic lead vocalist who probably would have had a decent career if he didn't decide to become a recluse.

Having said all of this, Welcome to the Pleasuredome is a classic release for its first half before becoming hit and miss the rest of the way. The tribal title track, all 13 minutes and 40 seconds of it, is fantastic, and a video would later gain some MTV airplay albeit in a much shorter version. "Relax" is a classic, one of the catchiest and most risqué songs of the 80's. "Two Tribes" is even better. Led by its kinetic bass line and a manic energetic beat, it is simply one of the most exciting songs to hit the charts. And the video, which features Ronald Reagan and Konstantin Chernenko (thanks for the correction, Patrick) battling it out in a sand pit with the band and other world leaders looking on, has to be seen to be believed. While not on the level of the original versions, covers of Edwin Starr's "War" and Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run" are also very good. The moody instrumental "The Ballad of 32" and the ballad "The Power of Love", which would also hit #1 in the U.K., are strong tracks and add some diversity. However, songs like "Krisco Kisses", "Wish the Lads Were Here", and "The Only Star In Heaven", while maintaining the energy of "Relax" and "Two Tribes", are decent at best. The versions of "Ferry across the Mersey" and "San Jose" also don't stand out. All told, Welcome to the Pleasuredome is a very good album from a band that would shine like the sun for just a moment but would not be forgotten.

What a Pleasure.......2005-12-17

What a well crafted album. From "Relax", the song used in the movie "Body Double" to Edwin Starr's "War" to Springsteen's "Born to Run" to ditties such as ("Do You Know the Way to) San Jose" to the wretching ballad "The Power of Love" this miscollection of songs goes together explicitly well. There are more famous concept albums by The Who and Pink Floyd but this album is right in the same league with its originality and metaphors. Give it a listen and you'll listen again over and over, getting more out of it every time. Its well worth your time to appreciate an album thats worth more than a passing glance. You'll be glad that you did.

I feel fortunate to have an older sister.Thanks to her taste in music,I was introduced to everything from Queen and Led Zeppelin to A Flock Of Seagulls and Gary Numan.Welcome To The Pleasuredome was one of those albums that twisted my young mind,shaping and forging my lasting musical tastes.There's a deep hidden prog feel to this album owing more to Rush than Yazoo and Depeche Mode.The message to this album is one of pure hedonism with no pretentions or posturing,something today's pop stars could take note of.Anyone of any age can appreciate the catchy and varied layering of guitar,keyboard and bass,though the lyrical content is decidedly geared more towards those of an older and more sophisticated audience.Some of the standout tracks are the pleasurable Snatch Of Fury,Two Tribes and the tremendously popular Relax,played in strip clubs nightly the world over.As much as I enjoyed those tracks(and believe me I did),I feel the crown of this album was Frankie's cover of Bruce Springsteen's Born To Run.Its a rare thing to outdo or match someone when covering one of their own songs,but somehow Frankie pulls off this rare feat with wild abandon and true skill showin.Groups like Frankie Goes To Hollywood always burn out before they should,but its tough to top an album like Welcome To The Pleasuredome,very tough.For fans of techno or 80's pop,there's worse things you could spend your money on than by buying a new copy of Pleasuredome.I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

A 1980s Classic And Must-Own.......2001-09-24

A graffiti written on the main entrance road to my school (the European School of Luxembourg) back in 1984 read »Welcome To The Pleasuredome«. Back then, I did not quite understand it. Later I learned to, though. For this debut album of Frankie Goes To Hollywood certainly is a Pleasuredome, in an everything but sarcastically meant way. It's a classic, one of the greatest albums (not just of the 1980s but) ever!

What a courage it must have demanded to issue a concept album, a long story split into songs, as a debut. Why don't these bands ever last longer? »Welcome To The Pleasuredome« has it all: One of the most beautiful ballads ever performed, »The Power Of Love«; great covers: »Born To Run«, »San José«, »Fury«, »War«; the sexy experimental »The Ballad Of 32«... plus, of course, the outstanding hit classics »Two Tribes« and »Relax«.

Furthermore, this import CD contains two interviews which were included on maxi(vinyl)singles.

So... »Welcome To The Pleasuredome«!! Frankie say... no more.

Welcome To The St. James Club=The Rippingtons.......2007-01-20

A good CD,, but not one of his better ones in my opinion. The music is relaxing and enjoyable to listen to, but nothing really sticks out! I have many of their CDs in my collection and this one will also certainly go into that collection. It a good one to mix it up if you have a carousel CD player!

Your typical but above average Rippingtons release!.......2006-03-25

The Rippingtons 1990 outing entitled "Welcome To Saint James Club" is not much different from previous Rippingtons albums but it is still a very enjoyable CD with standout tracks like the opening title track, and "I Watched Her Walk Away" but the real gem for me is the second song entitled "Wednesday's Child" which begins with an optimistic opener before becoming a very sophisticated pop-jazz classic with amazing keyboard sounds. Most of the rest of this album is also very good but doesn't stand out the way "Wednesday's Child" does. Definately a recommended album and certainly a worthy introduction to these guys but "Moonlighting" remains my favorite Rippingtons album as of writing this review.

Smooth Fused Jazz.......2005-04-15

I am definitely hooked on this CD. The keyboard sounds maybe a little outdated but sweet to the ears. "Welcome to the Saint James Club" (I first heard this song on the weather channel, no lie), "Affair in San Miguel" (hit rewind every time), and "Victoria's Secret" are my favorites. Check it out and you might want to rock the mullet (see inside cover and you will find out what I am talking about).

(I Watch Her) Walk Away.......2003-04-24

This is my first Jazz CD. This is my favorite song. Whenever I want to relax I play this song. I have been a fan of The Rippingtons for 10 years now. I have a total of 6 CDs and want to collect all of them. I like all most all of their selections because it is not noise to the ear. Another favorite of mine is Who's Holding Her Now and Victoria's Secret. Very soothing and relaxing. I just love The Rippingtons!

I've been a fan of the Rippingtons since their original release and they remain my favorite group. This, I believe, was and still is their best. Every song is great, especially the opening cut. Other than perhaps, Moonlighting, which has become a Jazz 'museum' classic not only for the music, but for the virtual 'who's who' list of musicians who went on to their own recording fame, Welcome to the St.JC is one that I recommend for anyone starting their Rippington's CD collection.

Great gems from musicals that dissapeared.......2004-11-30

Songs from 1987's "Smile" make this well worth the price. The previously unreleased material from the late, great Howard Ashman deserves to have it's moment in the spotlight.

Also, there's Judy Kuhn's beautiful performance on "Starfish", Christine Baranski's vampy turn on "Sherry".

Finally, there's" New Words" from "One, Two, Three, Four, Five". This show has been restaged, by small theatre groups, under the title "History Loves Company". "New Words" is by far the best number of this show and Liz Callaway's voice fills with love as she sings this lullaby.

For a consummate musical theatre fan who's heard it all, this disc is a refreshing look at what has been lost over the years.

Some of these songs desrve to be unsung. But then you get a showstopper like Sherry and you wonder how could this show have flopped? That number alone makes this cd worth purchasing.I also enjoyed Marvin Hamlisch's toe tapping title song - Smile.There are also a few other lovely melodies which makes this cd a nice addition to a Broadway collection.

Mike Ladd is one of the best musical artists and poets ever, and this is his best album ever. The lyrics are amazing, and the underground beats and fresh samples perfectly compliment them.
This is quality entertainment and pure genius. This album is a must buy for, well, anyone. Buy it now, then tell your friends to buy it, then tell people who aren't your friends to buy it...

A good album with a different approach to Hip Hop.......2002-02-05

This album features an array of influences spanning all forms. The dominating vibe here is experimentation and the result is surprisingly good. Mike Ladd is not a traditionalist and he manages to develop an original approach to the Hip Hop art form. Most of the beats are slow and Ladd displays a penchant for spoken poetry and singing. Mike Ladd proves himself to be an intelligent wordsmith and he touches interesting and polemical subjects. However, being a great lyricist doesn't mean he is the best rapper out there, and you might find at times his flow a little monotonous.
Nevertheless, the creativity displayed on this LP is worth on its own the purchase. It is rare enough to find an album that has personality and which attempts to innovate without leaving its soul behind.
This also means that this record is probably not for the average Hip Hop fan out there, but more likely for Company Flow or Anti Pop Consortium fans.

13 Steps to Bliss..........2002-01-30

Whoa! Mike Ladd has created one of the greatest albums of the last few years. Hip-hop or otherwise. "Welcome to the Afterfuture" is a superb collection of tunes that are as diverse and inventive as anything I have ever heard, in hip-hop or any other genre.

The whole tone of the album (for me) is one of contradiction. The rhymes are easy-going yet incredibly complex. Swinging between laidback bliss to down-right angry and sometimes shifting between these two extremes within a single song... without you even noticing until it has already changed. Musically, the first few tunes sound highly reminisant of Co. Flow or Cannibal Ox with their chopped beats and scattered samples, but further in a whole range of influences become apparent. Funk, symphonic soundtracks, drum 'n' bass, trip-hop & punk (just to name a few) all make an appearance, and yet the album is well & truly Mike Ladd's own.

While "The Animist" & "Red Eye to Jupiter" certainly standout, it would be wrong to nominate some tunes over others. Mr Ladd has created a very rare thing these days. A brilliant album, that stands as an album, not just a haphazard collection of singles. Buy this album immediately, such innovation and invention deserves to be rewarded. Very highly recommended.

The real ISH!.......2001-12-17

Mike Ladd is a visionary. What other word could you use to describe someone who so effectively weds different elements to form a more perfect union(that's a gestault for you (...)). I am not saying Ladd is doing something that hasn't been done before, his cryptic, highly thematic approach to Hip Hop is what Kool Keith does and what a lot of masked artist who will remain nameless are trying to do. But Mike Ladd brings it to you with no commercial interruptions(wink, wink). Ladd is like some kind of millenialist Martin Luther nailing a declaration of righteousness on the hallowed doors of Hip Hop's cathedral(aren't some saints buried in churches?) He is preaching the science of fire and brimstone and political autonomy. His songs rarely "say" anything, but what they suggest will often leave you feeling as heady as a dirty blunt cipher session--this is music for growth... or maybe just a compeling digression.

As far as the music is concerned: No one will be getting jiggy with Ladd, which suits me and him, I'm sure, just fine. His music is like jazz fusion through a scary effects processor; he does to Hip Hop music what Hendrix did to the blues, reinterprets the context. When Mike Ladd asks, "where's my floating car, my utopia," I am reminded of Broadcast News' phrase: I'm mad as hell, and I'm not gonna take it anymore.
No, seriously, Mike Ladd makes cowboy music for cowboys who think being a cowboy sucks. If you're tired of killing Indians, you should give Mike Ladd a try. And If you like this album, check out the INFESTICONS.

Underground Hip-Hop for the Star Trek Generation.......2001-08-10

First, I'm gonna say that I don't listen to much Hip-Hop, with the Roots, Lauryn, and a few others being the exceptions, but something just drew me to this album. Maybe it was the mood of the album. But this is something that must be listened to and experienced for anybody who truly loves music and doesn't feel like cow-towing to the mainstream. The pure musicianship that Ladd has is something that is lacked by most mainstream Hip-Hoppers. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that Mike shouldn't become mainstream, that's the opposite of what I am saying.

As far as the Music itself goes, this isn't for someone looking for something to bounce to in your car, at least not yet. Everything on this album is years ahead of it's time. The beats, rythem, sounds, and most importantly, the Rhymes are out of this world. The themes of future shock, paranoia, fear of change, and powerful- almost violent- idealism, will really resonate in the years to come. At least, in my opinion.

Ahead Of It's Time : Then And Now.......2006-01-19

In 1984 I made the original purchase of this classic album. It was a massive double-vinyl L.P. in a beautiful gatefold sleeve with perverse, yet oddly charming, artwork of woodland animals engaging in a massive orgy. This album was an amazing release to me back then and it became the kind of album that stayed with me through the years. Of course I upgraded from vinyl to cassette and then from cassette to cd but the music always remained the main focus. This 20th anniversary reissue is a welcome, and long overdue, edition to my modern cd collection. The new digital transfer brings new life and depth to each track. The sprawling 13 minutes that is "Welcome To The Pleasuredome" has never sounded so good and the amazing bass response makes the classic tracks like "Relax" and "Two Tribes" bring you right back to the club. I do however have to agree with the previous reviewer, when I made my upgrade from cassette to cd, the cd contained the track "Happy Hi" (which was the title track's b-side), an amazing 9 minute version of "Two Tribes" and a remixed version of "Wish (The Lads Were Here)". That original cd is long gone and these tracks would have been a welcome addition to this package. Overall this is a cd you should not pass up and a repackaging you will be incredibly happy with. I felt that the music here was always ahead of it's time and I think that if you are new to it you will feel the same. To those of us that have been fans for the past twenty-something years it will be a great refresher course of our youth.

Very Cool Re-issue.......2005-10-15

I was so looking forward to the re-issue of this disc, especially when I heard that Frankie's videos would be included. After listening and watching these 2 discs I was 99% satisfied. The only 2 criticisms I have for this disc, and the reason I gave this 4 stars instead of 5, are that the songs "The Last Voice" and "Happy Hi" are NOT included and that the stuttering Nixon footage was taken out of the the "Two Tribes" video. Other than that, everything about this disc is absolutely brilliant and you can get a more in depth opinion in my other reviews of the 2 different versions of "Welcome To The Pleasuredome" that are out there in the Amazon selection.

I have been searching for seemingly forever for this CD. It needs to be re released. Top to bottom this was amazing. My cassette is completely inaudible.

If anyone knows where I can obtain this (At a resonable price. $123.00? Get real.), please share the knowledge.

Great metal from a under rated band and a must have for any 80's metal collection!

Kick Who? That's right, Kick Axe.......2002-03-01

What's to say? I guess I'll say that Kick Axe is one of the most under-rated, unheard bands in metal. I was given a copy of Vices a few months after it came out and I was hooked. I saw them live in Colorado Springs on the Welcome To The Club tour. They blew the doors off the place. If you want to get an idea of how good they were, buy this album. Then try finding a copy of their next album, Rock The World. You won't be able to get it cheap. They were an immensely talented band. This album is full of great song writing, outstanding musicianship and great vocals. I completely disagree with another reviewer who classified this as "cheese" metal and then said not to get Rock The World. These guys were great. They only made three albums, but the scope of music on these albums is vast. I recommend this album very highly.

Brilliant Lost Classic of Cheese Metal.......2001-08-15

If you liked Kick Axe's debut album _Vices_ (Pasha/Epic/CBS, 1984), then you'll LOVE this. Very much like their first album, it features a variety of crunchy and chunky hard rock/metal guitars. But there are a wide variety of new sounds here, including some shimmery dark clean guitars ala late-Lynch Mob. There is some interesting bass work, and the song writing is much better.

For those who haven't heard Kick Axe (think hard...you might know then as "Spectre General" from the _Transformers_ movie soundtrack!) think of the rythmic power of a band like Judas Priest (though a little more accessible) with the melodic and harmonic sensibilities of a band like Dokken. If you buy one retro cheese album this year, make it _Welcome to the Club_.

Track by track: (1) "Welcome to the Club"--interesting blues based riff, clean tone, gets heavier. (2) "Feels Good...Don't Stop"--bass-driven boogie ala Queen's "Another One Bites the Dust". (3) "Comin' After You"--ASTOUNDING ATMOSPHERIC BALLAD INTRO that turns into a rocking tune. (4) "Make Your Move"--Party tune, sounds like Kix or Helix with Preist underneath. (5) "Never Let Go" ballad--very much like Skid Row's "18 and Life" but stays low key, like Scorpions' "Still Loving You". (6) "Hellraisers"--another Priest-like hard rocker but with guitar harmonics. (7) "Can't Take It With You"--jungle beat tom-toms, sort of like Danger Danger. (8) "Too Loud...Too Old"--Heaviest thing on the record, in the style of Iron Maiden. (Or "Cause For Alarm" from _Vices_). (9) "Feel The Power"--pumping bass tune, more pop than a lot of the record, almost like ZZTop meets Great White. (10). "With A Little Help From My Friends"--yeah, that's right...it's the Beatles tune, but they do the Joe Cocker version. A lot of guest vocals on the track.

This is Ian at his peak live. Loud, tight and downright fun! He's written better songs since this came out but for a brief shining moment, the planets were aligned and 'Club' came out.
The production on this is really good except for some sloppy start/stop editing BUT the best thing (besides song selection) is the mix.
Everything is loud! The crowd is in their faces, guitars in the red and a feeling for the songs that today's bands can't touch.
Ronson blasting through FBI on the opening number sets the tone for the entire LP/CD.
BUY BUY BUY---an essential piece for the library

I originally had this album on vinyl, back in the good ol' days when I was a 14yr. old, novice guitar player. Thank god it's been preserved on CD. I immediately loved Ian Hunter's material & Mick Ronson's (God rest his soul) soaring guitar work!

This is a high energy and fun CD. TAKE THIS CD TO THE GYM, FOR YOUR "TAKE-NO-PRISONERS" WORKOUT!

Rest assured....If you don't buy this CD, someone else will!

Almost saw them live, but for my $#@% brother..........2006-06-09

Ah the summer of '79- I was 15- My brother, 10 years older, had picked up a copy of "You're Never Alone..." which he loaned me, plus "Mott Live" & I was hooked- Imagine my excitement when I heard that Hunter, Ronson & crew were coming to play a show on Sept. 15,1979 in Presque Isle Maine- We were living on a farm in Centreville, NB, a hour or so drive away- I told my brother & we made plans to go- A couple of days before the show he told me he couldn't make it- I was devastated, but dealt with it- The day of the show I asked him if he was up to anything that evening & he said he was going to the concert- I know it wouldn't have looked cool having a younger sibling along, but to this day, some 27 years later, I still haven't forgiven him- I do have a copy of this now on CD- I had it when it first came out on vinyl & wore it out- It is a great recording! I'll never forgive my brother...

This Is Where Ian Peaked, RIGHT HERE!.......2005-02-27

It has been said (by "whom," I don't know, I am no philosopher) that the greatest art is inspired by or because of the intensity of an emotion that one experiences. And 1980, the year that "Club" was released was just exactly THAT to me. I mean, as far as music is concerned, what more could I have asked from Ian Hunter? Indeed, "Club" features some of the greatest songs of his career (more about that in a minute), Mick Ronson was back playing guitar for him, and the band they'd assembled (evidentally, from what I've been told, some of New York's finest) was tight as a tick! I saw this same show in Atlanta way back in June 1979, and I distinctly remember telling my drummer, "Man if he keeps THIS up, I believe we'll jus' forget about the Stones for awhile!" All these songs on "Club" are faithfully replicated (save for the wonderful "doo-wop" version of "The Golden Age Of Rock And Roll"), and this album/cd even has four (well, three) studio songs tacked onto the end. And I want to go on record right here and state that there is absolutely NO JUSTICE if Ian Hunter doesn't go to Rock And Roll Heaven for (I have no superlative adjectives to describe it) "We Gotta Get Out Of Here," which is EASILY the very BEST "Disco Sucks!" song of all eternity. And "We Gotta" even has the alltime #1 BABE, the scrumptious Ellen Foley, doing the same thing to Ian that she did to Meatloaf a scant three years before on "Paradise By The Dashboard Light." But if for nothing else (and I'll admit this is selfish), the very last song on the cd is about/describes an acrimonious, excruciatingly painful divorce that Ian evidentally thru sometime in the near past - and I went thru MY first divorce in 1980, and "Sons And Daughters" helped me realize that I wasn't the only one who'd suffered pain like that. So needless to say, the album/and now, cd, has everything I could wish for on it. Again: This Is RIGHT WHERE Ian Hunter peaked! And a note to my musician friends: This is NOT Ian's "Sgt Pepper" - better yet, it's his "Get Yer Ya Yas Out!"

Wow, wish I knew about this release earlier.......2005-01-19

A definite for any Ian Hunter, Mott the Hoople, Mick Ronson, fan. I wish I had the chance to see this concert. I like how the songs blend together and the Ronson guitar effort is evident. Sound quality is decent, also. Listen to this a couple of times and it will quickly become one of your most listened to cd's. It's a shame that Ronson only briefly collaborated with Mott the Hoople, obvious chemistry between Hunter and Ronson, as it shows, on multiple releases post Mott the Hoople.
