Amazon.com essential recording
Sarah Brightman's career was launched by her success in Andrew Lloyd Webber's Phantom of the Opera, so it's no surprise to hear the soprano paying homage to the composer on this disc. Really a Brightman best-of, the album includes the Phantom theme (a duet with Michael Crawford), the light-opera fare of "Chanson D'enfance" from Aspects of Love, "Don't Cry for Me, Argentina" from Evita, and numerous other Lloyd Webber classics. Throughout, Brightman's diminutive voice lends a fragility to these musical theater tunes that you'll either love or despise. On Evita's "Another Suitcase, Another Hall" and Cats' "Memory," she literally chirps through the vocal lines. No matter. The growing legion of Brightman fans wouldn't have it any other way. --Jason Verlinde

The Andrew Lloyd Weber Collection.......2007-05-12
Sarah Brightman sings in good form classic songs and does a great job!!
Andrew Lloyd Webber .......2007-02-12
Excellent Broadway music--a true master. Sing along or just listen. First heard her on PBS.
The Andrew Lloyd Webber Collection.......2007-01-05
Sarah Brightman has always been a favorite of mine, and this CD is outstanding. The duet with Jose Carreras (Friends for Life) is especially good--worth buying the CD for that song alone.
The Best You'll See from Sarah.......2006-09-09
This CD is - wow! I have so much to say about it and so little time! This album features three pieces from "The Phantom of the Opera" - Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again, The Music of the Night, and The Phantom of the Opera theme. They're all beautiful. The second piece on the album is "Unexpected Song". It has beautiful octaves and orchastrations. Chanson d'Efance is an amazing French piece with vibrato - and then some. I forgot to mention that there is another piece from The Phantom of the Opera - All I Ask of You - except that the song is not sung by the original cast from the musical. The next few pieces are fairly decent, until you get to Memory from Cats. WOW - is it spectacular! Then we get to two other pieces from Cats - Gus: The Theater Cat and Macavity: The Mystery Cat. Gus is a song that just tells about a cat and his history. A man speaks the lines that Gus would say in the actual musical - and it makes the song interesting. Macavity is AWESOME! I know that I said that I didn't prefer this song for Brightman on her album "Surrender". I finally listened to it more carefully, and found that it's really interesting to listen to! My favorite song on the whole entire album - however - has to be "Tell Me on a Sunday". Beautiful lyrics, orchestrations, and overall spectacular voice talent ties the whole song together. Pie Jesu is a fairly nice piece from both Brightman and Paul Miles-Kingston - the 16 year old boy soprano. His voice is pure and straight with minimal vibrato. However, Brightman's voice shows a little bit TOO much vibrato! Overally, it's a good piece from Andrew Lloyd Webber's Requium. THIS CD IS AMAZING! If you love Sarah from the Phantom of the Opera, then this collection of Lloyd Webber's work is just for you.
I also recommend Charlotte Church - (in her earlier career) - including Voice of an Angel and her self-titled album. I also recommend Love Changes Everything - The Andrew Lloyd Webber Collection Vol.2 - just another grouping of Webber's classics. I also recommend Andrea Boucelli - he's awesome!
The Angel of Music.......2006-03-13
This is the third copy of this I've purchased. I wear them out listening to them. Awesome, Awesome music. Sarah's range and depth is so powerful!

The critical debate over Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical legacy will no doubt rage for decades. Is he the shrewd populist composer who almost single-handedly revived the moribund stage musical--or a crass, Barnum-esque showman (who almost single-handedly revived the moribund stage musical)? This 18-track anthology chronicles the high points of Sir Andrew's enduring songcraft and the irrefutable impact it's made across a remarkably disparate swath of tastes and genres, from Broadway to Top 40 radio and even the classical repertoire.
If some have accused Lloyd Webber's songs--like "The Music of the Night" (from Phantom of the Opera) and the title tune from Whistle Down the Wind, included here--of having all the melodic and lyrical sophistication of a children's lullaby, that's likely the very element that's made them so appealing to a mass audience. If nothing else, it's a compelling argument for that old notion about it being "the singer, not the song." Indeed, there are few contemporary composers whose music could entice divas from Streisand ("As If We'd Never Said Goodbye" from Sunset Blvd.) to Madonna (Evita's "You Must Love Me") and Charlotte Church ("Pie Jesu" from Requiem) to cover it, let alone forge the very careers of artists like Sarah Brightman and Michael Crawford. And if there's any substance to that other criticism of Lloyd Webber lifting the melodic ideas of composers from Verdi to John Williams (we swear that's the theme to Jurassic Park bubbling up in Tom Jones's camped-up take on Whistle's "The Vaults of Heaven"), at least, like virtually every major composer, he's stolen--er, borrowed--from the best. --Jerry McCulley

Andrew LLoyd Webber - Gold Hits.......2007-07-13
I sent this CD to my parents and they love it! It is nice to preview the songs on-line instead of with greasy headphones in a music store! The shipping is always speedy and makes sending gifts across the country so much easier.
The Gold By Andrew.......2007-04-23
This cd is a must have for any Webber fan. It has many great songs from his most sucsessful musicals. But something I don't like about this cd is that some of the singer how sings some of the songs arn't the onse that sings the originals. Like "The Phantom Of The Opera" and "Love Changes Everything". Witch is so sad. Couse the original songs are so much better.
But besides that this cd is very good. With manye nice and difficult songs (I've sung some of the myself in siningclass).
So if you like Andrew's music this most sertanly is a most have.
The best of Webber.......2005-09-12
Although I like Andrew Llloyd Webber and his music very much, this collection earns only 4 stars and it's not because of the quality of the music but the level of performers. If a best of collection is made it should contain the best version ever done and this time it's not true. I could write the same review for the European edition (labeled import here) because the blend of the two would be a perfect best of.
Some examples: this version contains Memory sung by Betty Buckley while the Elaine Page version is light years better. Then it contains Patti Lupone's version of Don't Cry For Me Argentina. Even though Madonna wasn't the best Evita, she definitely sung Argentina in a way no-one could before or will ever. Whistle Down The Wind is represented with 3 songs - the place of the Tom Jones song is not here (the same could be said of Tina Arena's song o the European edition). Instead of the TJ song they could have included Take That Look Off Your Face by Marti Webb - one of the best songs by Webber. Pie Jesu from the Requiem is much better sung by Sarah Brightman. These are the faults.
What about the rest? Pure joy and material worth of 6 stars. Superstar, Phantom Of The Opera, Music Of The Night, I Don't Know How To Love Him, All I Ask Of You, No Matter What, Oh What A Circus - wonderful songs and wonderful performers. My all-time favorite from Webber will always be Music Of The Night and the version included here is the mesmerizing adaptation of Michael Crawford.
I don't advise anyone not to buy this album - it's good material, however it's far from being perfect.
THE BEST OF LLOYD WEBBER MADE FOR THE AMERICAN AUDIENCES.......2005-01-31
There are numerous compilations out on the market full of Andrew Lloyd Webber's music. As most people know, Lloyd Webber is the most successful musical composer of all time and many of his songs became standards not only in the theatre history, but also as tops on the charts. Even though he's British, his influence on the shape of the modern musical theatre expanded over the West End boundaries long ago and has thus made an enormous impact on Broadway. Two of his shows ("Cats" and "The phantom of the opera") hold the record as two the longest running shows in the history of Broadway. He has also been the only composer to have three of his shows running at Broadway concurrently. This compilation captures some of the best songs he has ever written, he personally supervised it and it is the best thing to have if you can't afford his five-CD compilation called "Now and forever", which was selected and supervised by him as well. You should bear in mind, however, that there are two compilations called Gold out there: The one made for the European and the British market, and this one, made for the American buyers. Some of the songs on both of them are the same, the others are performed by different artists and some can be found only in one of the two. This one here was issued later and it is digitally remastered. Therefore you should check your favourites and buy accordingly, or, if you can, buy them both, since both of them contain interesting songs and performers.
So here are my thoughts about the tracks in this one:
1. "Superstar" and "I don't know how to love him" are both from the concept album of "Jesus Christ Superstar". They sound wonderful as ever, although the orchestrations may seem a bit dated by now.
2. "Sunset Boulevard" is marked here with two songs. Barbra Streisand's powerful voice shines all the way through in "As if we never said goodbye"; it's a shame she never played Norma Desmond on Broadway, since Patti LuPone wasn't allowed to take her Norma to New York, and Glenn Close butchered the role. Her limited vocal abilities were hardly suited for the material, as it is shown by the second Sunset song, "The perfect year", performed by Close and Alan Campbell. They both lack a decent singing voice, so this is the one song I skip regularly. The song itself sounds much better in its single version with pops orchestration, as can be heard on the European version of this compilation, where it is performed by Dina Carroll. This version here can hardly be considered a gold one.
3. "The Phantom of the Opera" is represented by three songs. Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman performance in the song of the same title is amazing. They were both born to play their roles in this show and their voices fit together perfectly. Sarah can hit the high notes in the end like no other Christine. Cliff Richard and Sarah sing the lovely ballad "All I ask of you" with passion, and Cliff has a wonderful warmth in his voice. Finally, Michael Crawford gives his unique and mesmerising interpretation in "The music of the night".
4. The 1996 movie version of "Evita" is Madonna's best role to date and it brought an Academy Award for Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice, who wrote "You must love me" especially for the big screen. This is another wonderful ballad with the haunting cello and piano solo. It just proves that Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice were the best collaborators. They really should do another musical together.
5. "The Joseph and his amazing Technicolor dreamcoat" was Webber's first musical and the signature song "Any dream will do" is performed here by Donny Osmond, who also appeared in the video version. I find his rendition even better than London's Jason Donovan, since Donny isn't strictly bound by the notes and so sings it more casually. A wonderful pop piece.
6."Memory" from "Cats" is probably the most famous of all Webber's songs, recorded by numerous artists. This version is sung by Betty Buckley, who was Broadway's Grizabella. Although Betty's performance can't be considered bad, I prefer Elaine Paige, who sung the song first, in the London production. Elaine has a note of sorrow in her at times husky voice, which I found very intriguing. Her performance can be considered definite, as heard on "Cats" DVD or in her latest two-disc compilation, "Centre stage: The very best of Elaine Paige", issued in May 2004. Still, those who prefer Ms. Buckley or who saw her on stage in this role won't be disappointed.
7. "Pie Jesu" is the best known song from Webber's "Requiem", written in 1985 to commemorate the death of his father. I'm not too keen on the version included here, performed by Charlotte Church, because her voice isn't as pretty as Sarah Brightman's on the original recording and the tempo is somewhat faster here.
8. "Don't cry for me Argentina" is among my all-time Lloyd Webber's favourites. I like all the ladies who performed "Evita" on the stage and on the screen (Julie Covington, Elaine Paige, Patti LuPone and Madonna), but on this disc is the version I am most satisfied with, since it is sung by Patti LuPone. Ms. LuPone has a very powerful voice with an amazing range and she deserved her Tony Award for this role. She was able to sound both vulnerable and decisive while singing this, whereas the other leading ladies emphasized one or the other in their interpretation. Mandy Patinkin's "Oh what a circus" is not the best, the orchestration is a little bit weak and his voice sounds thin to me. David Essex on the London cast recording is more suitable.
9. "Aspects of love" boast here with its top song, "Love changes everything", performed wonderfully by Michael Ball. It was his #1 hit and is probably one of the most beautiful love anthems ever written.
10. Three songs come from "Whistle down the wind". The studio release of the same title is one of the reasons I bought this compilation, although I already have the European one. It is performed by Sarah Brightman with Lloyd Webber playing the piano and a symphonic orchestra who nicely takes the lead of the main melody. Sarah voice is angelic; she sings it like a little bird. Very charming. Boyzone's "No matter what" was a huge pop hit in the charts. Again, we have a song with the suitable orchestrations and vocals. And lastly, Tom Jones' deep voice in combination with the back vocals of "The Sounds of Blackness" gives a rocking rendition of the church hymn "The vaults of heaven". It can't be found on the European version and Tom's voice shows it hasn't aged. Way to go.
11. For the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, Webber wrote, together with his long-time lyricist Don Black, this last song, "Amigos para siempre or Friends for life". It's a nice duet between Sarah Brightman and Jose Carreras, their voices sore when bound together. The melody itself is neat, especially when the orchestra takes the lead.
Besides the fact that some of the performers here were not the best for my taste, there is also the fact that some of Lloyd Webber's shows are omitted in this version, most notably, "Tell me on a Sunday". Also, unlike its European counterpart, this compilation isn't aligned chronologically, so we have 1970 Superstar being the first song, 1993 Sunset Blvd comes the second, followed by The Phantom from 1986 and so on. None the less, this CD is excellent as an introduction to Lloyd Webber's music and one can continue with his cast recordings from there. It's also very handy as a single disc compilation for the American fans.
Super good CD.......2004-12-31
The songs on this CD are great. If you also play piano, the book of the same title goes perfectly with the CD. You can following along with the music and learn the songs on the piano.

Album Description
UK pressing of the third CD single pulled from her album The Dutchess. 'Big Girls Don't Cry' is a touching song with Fergie sharing a side of herself we rarely see. The lyrics are heartfelt, speaking of wanting time alone to face up to her responsibilities. Led by an acoustic guitar and laced with strings, complimenting Fergie's versatile voice, the track was produced by the multi-talented Will.I.Am (Black Eyed Peas) and was written by Fergie and Toby Gad. Features 'Big Girls Don't Cry (Personal)' plus 'Pedestal'. Polydor.

Customer Reviews:
Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30
Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.
Top Shelf.......2007-01-04
This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.
TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23

Amazon.com essential recording
There are many, many Andrew Lloyd Webber albums out there, including cut-and-paste compilations and songbooks from individual artists, most notably Sarah Brightman, Michael Crawford, and even Jose Carreras. The Premiere Collection is probably as authentic as you can get in a hits album, however. In addition to the most popular selections from the original casts of Evita, Cats, and Jesus Christ Superstar, the 57-minute album includes two selections from Tell Me on a Sunday (also recorded by Bernadette Peters as Song and Dance), the title tune from Starlight Express, the "Pie Jesu" from the Requiem, and a snippet from the Paganini Variations, thereby allowing you to hear the good stuff without having to spring for the complete albums. Note that the three selections from Phantom of the Opera are the 1986 pop singles instead of the cast recordings, meaning Steve Harley rather than Crawford sings with Brightman on the title tune and Cliff Richard subs for Steve Barton on "All I Ask of You." (Crawford does sing "The Music of the Night," of course.) This 1989 compilation was too early for Aspects of Love or Sunset Boulevard, and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is ignored, but these omissions are rectified in the follow-up album The Premiere Collection Encore, and the American-slanted version, The Very Best of Andrew Lloyd Webber: The Broadway Collection. --David Horiuchi

Musical Pleasure.......2007-07-03
I enjoy all of this music, listening frequently. Some not original cast members, so less than 5 star. Product exactly as advertised.
The Premiere Collection.......2007-01-17
My sister had this and it got destroyed. She wanted an other, This was the only place I have found it!! Very hard to find! I have been to every music store in my area. She loved it!! And was so happy to have it again. Anyone who loves Andrew Lloyd Webber will love this. As it has many songs from some of his most famous plays with the original cast. Great item.
beautiful.......2006-12-21
This CD is a great compilation of some of Andrew Lloyd Webber's hits. If you are just looking for a "quick fix" for your Broadway craving, this is a great value.
Fair Album with 1 starlight and 0 aspects.......2004-07-09
I think this album is F-A-I-R because it has one starlight express song and zero aspects of love songs. This is why i liked the album The reason i said that this is a fair album is that I like Starlight Express better. Song i like are "The Phantom of the Opera", "Take That Look off Your Face", All I Ask of You", "Don't Cry For Me Argentina", "Mr. Mistofflees," "Superstar," "Memory", "Starlight Express", "Tell Me On A Sunday", "Music of the Night", "Another Suitcase in Another Hall", and "I Don't Know How To Love Him". I dislike the following songs:" Track 6" and the last one because the last one was hard to understand and track 6 is instrumental.
Superb collection.......2003-08-11
... It is a collection of the best of ALW's creative efforts, and a collection of great performances. Anyone who loves "Broadway" should have this disk in their collection.

The most soothing sounds.......2006-02-20
I grew up listening to Zamfir's pan flute soothing music, then for the past 15 years, I've been away from it until I heard The Lonely Shepherd while watching Kill Bill. I was pleasantly surprised to find the CD at Amazon and bought it at once. Many of the other songs on this CD are good as well, but nothing beats The Lonely Shepherd.
moving and lyrical.......2005-10-08
I dont care for any of the other songs on the CD, but the "Lonely Shepherd" theme is very beautiful and sad. Zamfir was obviously deeply in love with the panpipes. Listen to his "Picnic at Hanging Rock" soundtrack and you'll know what I mean. I highly recommend this CD.
Wonderful Music !!.......2005-09-26
THis CD by Zamfir is out of this world. There is nothing better than "The Lonely Shepherd"... I haven't heard a better one than this. Just the type of soft instrumental one would like...very soothing.
Just one listen changed my life.......2005-01-19
I was once a punk rocker. I listened to the Sex Pistols, Ramones, Black Flag, and The Dead Kennedys. I have a string of gigs under my belt with various punk bands, a long list of one night stands with rocker chicks, and did enough drugs to make Keith Richards OD. All that changed the night I listened to Zamfir.
Alone in my apartment I played this CD while cleaning a puke staine off my carpet. I don't know whose it was, but I'd like to thank him because it led me to my new life. I have since thrown away my guitars, amps, and entire music collection. It is all garbage by comparison to this and in the trash is where it all belongs.
How can anyone listen to 'Summer of 42' and not fall to their knees by the sheer beauty of it? The Lonely Shepard title track brings tears to my eyes everytime I listen to it. It brings me to a magical place where no one gets arrested for shoplifting and everyone has peace in their hearts.
I cannot find a panflute at the music store, so I'm trying to make one out of PVC pipe and old bongs. I think I found the G, A, and D major chords, but can't quite find F. A silly straw with a slit in it can make a pretty decent B minor, but it stretches out after a couple of days.
All my friends have abandoned me and I haven't been with a woman in three months, but it is all worth it. I now happily skip through life with merriment in my heart. No more drugs for me, Zamfir is my natural high.

While Don't Cry Now is Linda Ronstadt's fourth solo album, it has the feel of a sophomore release. Perhaps that's due to the albums that bookend this 1973 outing: it was preceded by a self-titled collection that signaled the big-voiced, doe-eyed singer's move away from country toward rock, an expedition capped with her 1974 breakthrough, Heart Like a Wheel. Ronstadt was on firmer footing with each outing; Don't Cry Now is better than the record before it and weaker than the one to follow. A slew of in-demand Southern California players are along to assist Ronstadt, who tackles material from some of the favored songwriters of the day, including John David Souther, Neil Young, Frey-Henley, and Randy Newman. --Steven Stolder
Customer Reviews:
CLIFF HANGER To HEART LIKE A WHEEL!.......2004-10-21
One of LINDA RONSTADT's most endearing projects ever! This is the album that LINDA RONSTADT found her all time enduring voice on(it was THERE from "Different Drum" on!), and that Americans became solidly and universally intrigued with her! There are FOUR notable singles here that subsequently guided, inspired and catapulted all future(well into the 1990's) Country/Pop artists into the stratosphere of national and international recordings arts fame. Those quintessential tracks are her universally acclaimed DEFINITIVE version of SILVER THREADS AND GOLDEN NEEDLES(her PERSONAL Rock redefining update & future C&W/Classic Rock Radio staple), superior to her previous 1969 version, and immense improvement over Ronstadt hero Dusty Springfield's early 60's version!)- RONSTADT's INCOMPARABLE power ballad version(Eagles version paled, failed & avoided on radio at the time!)of her 1970's FM Rock Radio staple, DESPERADO - her intensely played and celebrated charting single, LOVE HAS NO PRIDE, which overshadowed all other versions - "SAIL AWAY", her classic Randy Newman cover which also recieved coast to coast American FM Radio airplay during the mother LP's run...and last, but not least, her memorable mid-70's FM radio staple, "COLORADO" which drove RONSTADT even deeper into the hearts of American music fans - yes(!) we felt her "pain" and identified quite well with this GODDESS of torch songs, whether male or female! DON'T CRY NOW is an ESSENTIAL American Recording - it remains the "cliff hanger" to HEART LIKE A WHEEL, and dominates all pop-rock-country music libraries of its era and beyond.
End of the beginning.......2004-04-24
Although this contains more rock and less country than her previous albums, it has more of a country feel to it than much of the music coming out of Nashville in recent years. This was Linda's fourth solo album - she had also recorded some with the Stone Poneys - but although it was her best selling album up to that point in her career, it did not make her a big star - that happened as a result of the album after this, Heart like a wheel. This album is fairly mellow, being mainly a mix of ballads and mid-tempo songs with only a couple of up-tempo songs (Silver threads and golden needles, The fast one).
The songs include three originals (I can almost see it, Don't cry now, The fast one) written by John David Souther, a songwriter that provided Linda with songs during the seventies. Love has no pride (co-written by Eric Kaz, another songwriter whose songs Linda made good use of) has also been covered by Bonnie Raitt.
The album includes plenty of great covers including Desperado (Eagles), Sail away (Randy Newman), Colorado (Flying Burrito Brothers), Everybody loves a winner (William Bell) and I believe in you (Neil Young).
This album includes Linda's second recording of Silver threads and golden needles, a country standard first recorded by Wanda Jackson, which became a top twenty American hit for the Springfields in the early sixties. Linda originally recorded the song on Hand sown home grown, which I've already reviewed.
This album, on vinyl, was my introduction to Linda's music and it remains one of my favorites. Linda has recorded many different types of album and you need eclectic tastes (like Linda and I do) to enjoy them all. To enjoy this one, you need to like mellow country rock music, such as you can hear on the early Eagles albums.
Linda in 1973.......2002-08-11
Still a relatively young artist, she had not hit her stride yet. After listening to many of the albums from her repertoire, I have to say that this is her best one so far. The album is one of her most emotional and solemn, even more than her classic "Hasten Down the Wind'. It opens with the brilliant Harmonica driven "I Can Almost See it" and you can almost feel her heartbreak. "Love Has No Pride" is a torch singer's pride, she rips this one to shreds with her honesty and leaves no prisoners. She provides a good version of "Silver Threads and Golden Needles' but alittle too bluegrass driven, Janis Joplin's version is a little more superior. "Desperado" is the best song on this record and possibly the best in her whole catalog. The title track is just beautiful, she sings it so nicely with her friend Wendy on the harmonization. "Sail Away" is a definite miss, the chorus behind her is uplifting but this one drags. "Colorado" is a almost visual masterpiece and she almost melts your heart with her vocals. "The Fast One" is one of the two uptempos on this album and the best out of both of them. This one is cool. "Everybody Loves A Winner" is another winner. It's heartbreak in the lyrics but you can sense some optimism. She's a great interpreter. If you're looking for uplifting Linda, check "Get Closer" but if you want ball and chain carrying, heartrending Linda. Definately buy this one and "Hasten Down the Wind". Bow down to one of the greatest vocalists of our time.
Linda Ronstadt's First Hit Record.......2002-01-07
While it took HEART LIKE A WHEEL to make Linda Ronstadt rock's first female superstar, DON'T CRY NOW was her first certified hit record. DON'T CRY NOW peaked at #45 on the charts and was certified Gold, which was a large improvement (in commercial terms) over her previous recordings. It was also her first record on David Geffen's Asylum label, though HEART LIKE A WHEEL, released the following year, was issued by Capitol Records. Ronstadt's style had changed noticeably over her previous two albums. The breathtaking-roots-country approach of SILK PURSE had been replaced by a smoother country sound on LINDA RONSTADT. With DON'T CRY NOW, most of the country influence is toned-down (the steel guitar is used frequently, but the fiddle appears only on "Silver Threads And Golden Needles"). In 1973, many reviewers commented that if Linda Ronstadt would become a pure country singer, she'd be the industry's best. The soft-rock sound of DON'T CRY NOW is magnificent, it reminds me somewhat of Carole KIng's TAPESTRY, but DON'T CRY NOW has a more forceful style. Its one of Linda Ronstadt's most richly emotional albums. J.D. Souther takes full production command on four of the album's songs (three of which are his own), working with John Boylan (who produced her 1972 album) on two and Peter Asher (who she'd work with from 1974 to the early 1990s) on another two. Boylan takes the helm solo on two additional tracks. Ronstadt cuts three of Souther's songs on this album, she had never recorded any of his tunes prior to DON'T CRY NOW, but he would remain a notable presence on her work through the 1970s. Souther's "I Can Almost See It" opens the record with a subtle harmonica introduction. The recording is remarkable, though the song didn't chart well. "Love Has No Pride" did. Linda Ronstadt delivers the definitive version, using her skills as music's finest torch singer to bring additional emotional resonance to the recording. "Love Has No Pride" was produced by John Boylan. The country warhorse "Silver Threads And Golden Needles" had already been featured on Ronstadt's solo debut HAND SOWN...HOME GROWN is all-stops out rock/country (I mean it literally) arrangement. The DON'T CRY NOW version is superior, the album's only pure-country recording, one of the two uptempo songs on the album, produced by Boylan and Souther. Herb Pedersen, who was indispensable in the alternative country scene of the 1970s contributes harmony vocals and acoustic guitar. Its one of my favorite Linda Ronstadt songs, either version, but I like this one just a little bit better. The Eagles had used "Desperado" as the thread for their sophomore album, an unsuccessul concept album of the same name. Their recording of the song is an Eagles classic. Ronstadt offers a soulful rendition far greater than the original, and hers succeeds without the western connections of surrounding songs Souther's finest composition on the album is the title track, which Ronstadt gives a powerful edge through her extraordinary voice and singing skills. Like "I Can Aklmost See It", "Don't Cry Now" was a brand new composition at the time of recording. Peter Asher would be at the helm of her rock records from HEART LIKE A WHEEL to CRY LIKE A RAINSTORM-HOWL LIKE THE WIND (I'm not sure who produced MAS CANCIONES and FRENESI, though I think it was Asher). He co-produces "Sail Away" and "I Believe In You" with J.D. Souther. Randy Newman's "Sail Way" is a brilliant composition, but Ronstadt has been criticized severley for her version of the song. Ronstadt delivers a soulful rendition with some gospel overtones, but the ironic humor of Newman's original is missing. So what. Ronstadt's performing energy makes this track a worthwhile listen. "Colorado" was one of the few notable tracks on the Flying Burrito Brothers first post-Gram Parsons album. Rick Roberts, who played a crucial role in the discovery of Emmylou Harris, composed the song; a gentle sorrow-filled tune, which is given an exceptional reading on DON'T CRY NOW, produced by Boylan. I've always felt that Souther's song "The Fast One" was somewhat of a missed opportunity; there are exceptional pieces to the song, but the verse/chorus and the bridge aren't well-matched. Ronstadt version of the song, however, is excellent. William Bell had made a classic out of "Everybody Loves A Winner" and Ronstadt offers a marvelous rendition of the song. Boylan and Souther produced this song which features a horn arrangement. Neil Young's exceptional "I Believe In You" is the album's best song, and the best album closer in Linda Ronstadt's catalog. Ronstadt's vocal is filled with emotion as it rings out among the marveous string arrangement and breathtaking chorus. This is the definitive recording. It took me a while to enjoy DON'T CRY NOW, mainly because of the lack of uptempo material, but after I listened to it a couple times I think of it as an essentiaal. Not to mention a crucial step in Linda Ronstadt's path to superstardom.
Wonderful!.......2001-08-24
This major 1973 release finds Ronstadt still solidifying her position as rock's premier interpretive singer. The country rock of the Eagles and producer/writer John David Souther remains the idiom, but Ronstadt has the voice, style and background to deliver this commercialized roots music with little loss of authenticity. Unlike Bonnie Raitt or Janis, she is relatively free of blues or R&B influence. In another singer this might seem a liability, but it allows Rondstadt unusually direct access to the emotional wellsprings of the country and folk which defined post-sixties rock music. Whether on the Eagles' own "Desperado," the country warhorse "Silver Threads And Golden Needles" or Neil Young's "I Believe In You," Rondstadt's powerful contralto emerges as a representative voice of a musical generation just coming of age.

When Robert Smith's long-running group made this debut (actually the resequenced American version of the British Three Imaginary Boys), they weren't the Goth-and-reverb, new wave heroes they later became; they were just a trio of disaffected kids who didn't like what was on the radio, because it wasn't smart enough or dark enough. Smith's lyrics are bleakly sarcastic (as when he spells out the title of "Fire in Cairo") and literate (the single "Killing an Arab," a nihilistic sketch based on a scene from Albert Camus's The Stranger). The band matches them with swift, tingling arrangements that dodge skillfully around rock's machismo and self-indulgence, even when Smith launches into the occasional gnarled little solo. --Douglas Wolk

Only glimmers of the greatness to come.......2006-02-21
This is, not, technically the band's debut: that came in the British release of THREE IMAGINARY BOYS (which has a slightly different track lineup). But for us Yanks, this is the album that introduced Robert Smith and company. The multi-layered wash of guitar and keyboard is nowhere in evidence on this one, though. [Think stripped back angular post-punk new wave rock.]
There's plenty of experimentation here..some of it works (the shattering scream that ends the claustrophobic stalker tune "Subway Song"..just as you think the intended victim has safely escaped) some doesn't (the scattershot use of phrases from advertisements in "So What").
HIGHLIGHTS:
The title track is the closest you get to the sound the Cure would evolve into. Shimmering guitars collide with Smith's admission that this time he's hurt his girl too much and it's finally over for good. ("I try to laugh about it/Hiding the tears in my eyes") "10:15 Saturday Night" is the aftermath of that loss..Smith waiting for the phone call that will never come ("And I'm sitting/In the kitchen sink/And the tap drips/Drip drip drip drip drip drip drip drip") Anti-conformity anthem "Jumping Someone Else's Train" sparkles ("The old ideal/Was getting such a bore/Now you're back in line/Going not quite quite as far..") "Killing an Arab" paints the detachment of the act itself ("I feel the steel b-u-t-t jump/Smooth in my hand..") and the realization of what he's done ("Staring at myself/Reflected in the eyes/Of the dead man on the beach")
LOWS:
The lyrical pastiche that comprises most of "So What" is NOT "brilliant"..it's simply oddball. I guess Robert's going for a sense that the world is nothing but noise without the woman he's lost ("Forget all the lies forgive me the wounds/And all the world was used to love/And yes we'd still be happy in another time/But so what?") but it's a theme he approached in "10:15 Saturday Night" in a much more memorable fashion. "Another Day" is plodding and dull. Surely there's another way to evoke boredom than with boring music?
BOTTOM LINE:
If the words "raw" or "stripped-back" in a music review raise a contented sigh in you, this will probably be up your alley. If it's the lusher productions of latter-day Cure (a la "Lovesong" or "Pictures of You") that do it for you, this may not hit the spot.
EDIT:
The lyric from "Killing an Arab" is spelled that way because an Amazon auto-censor keeps removing it but the lyric doesn't make sense without that word. Smith's referring to the b-u-t-t end of the gun. Amazon had been rendering it "I feel the steel..smooth in my hand" which might not convey the emotion properly.
Underrated Punk.......2005-10-07
This album is consistent from begining to end. Every track can be liked the first time you listen Boys Dont Cry. Most ardent punk fans inundate themselves with crashing wave of Sex Pistols, Ramones, New York Dolls, and possibly MC5. However, this album amalgamates raw punk with an ethereal quilaity thats present throughout the whole album. Get this album today.
THIS IS ACTUALLY 1000 STARS!.......2005-08-15
THE GUY WHO WROTE THE REVIEW ENTITLED "WHAT FUTURE LEGENDS ARE MADE OF..." IS SO RIGHT! THE CURE HAS RELEASED LIKE 13 ALBUMS BUT, BELIEVE ME, THIS IS THEIR BEST ONE! THE MUSIC IS QUITE PLAYFUL AND THEN IT COMES TO MORE SERIOUS MUSIC ("ANOTHER DAY," "THREE IMAGINERY BOYS") BUT I THINK THE PLAYFUL MUSIC IS THE BEST. I LOVE "FIRE IN CAIRO," "BOYS DON'T CRY," AND "SUBWAY SONG" (THAT ONE IS REALLY FUN IS A HALLOWEEN SORTA WAY), ALTHOUGH I WISH THAT THEY KEPT SELLING THE COPY WITH "WORLD WAR" ON IT. "WORLD WAR" IS EXCELLENT (I HEARD IT ON "THREE IMAGINERY BOYS (DELUXE EDITION).") THIS IS NOT ACTUALLY THEIR DEBUT, IT ACTUALLY COLLECTS THE LAST THREE SINGLES THAT THEY DID THAT WEREN'T INCLUDED ON 1979'S "THREE IMAGINERY BOYS," WHICH WERE "BOYS DON'T CRY," "JUMPING SOMEONE ELSE'S TRAIN," AND THE EXCELLENT SONG WITH AN UNPLEASANT TITLE BUT ITS ACTUALLY BASED ON THE NOVEL "THE STRANGER," "KILLING AN ARAB." THERE IS ALSO THE BEST SONGS FROM "THREE IMAGINERY BOYS," PLUS A REALLY COOL B-SIDE CALLED "PLASTIC PASSION" FROM THE "BOYS DON'T CRY" SINGLE. GET THIS NOW IF YOU'RE A FAN!!! I AM A 12-YEAR-OLD AND HAVE BEEN A FAN SINCE SEEING THEIR "END OF THE WORLD" MUSIC VIDEO. ANYWAYS, ENJOY THIS ALBUM.
A strong debut.......2005-05-09
Right from the start, The Cure was obviously a band to be reckoned with. While there has always been an attempt to categorize the band (e.g. "post-punk," "new wave," "gloom-and-doom") all one can really definitively say is that The Cure was, and still is, a terrific band with a unique sound.
Obviously The Cure is the brain-child of Robert Smith, who wrote all of the lyrics on all of their albums, probably most of the music as well, sings, and plays the guitars. "Boys Don't Cry" still holds its own as one of their better albums. It contains two of their best all-time songs: the infectious "Jumping Someone Else's Train," and the exotic "Killing an Arab." The latter, controversial because of its title, references the writings of Camus, and is about the inhumanity of war, and how those engaging in battle must become drone-like and de-humanize their enemy ("I'm a stranger, killing an Arab").
There are other gems in this album. The title track, though lighthearted, is irresistible. "Plastic Passion" is Robert Smith's ode to a female sex toy, and "10:15 Saturday Night" perfectly describes a young man's angst at that time, waiting by the telephone for a certain girl to call, while listening to the dripping of a faucet. I really like "Three Imaginary Boys" as well. Of course, Smith would soon start writing longer, more complex work, but "Boys Don't Cry" was an excellent starting point.
Footnote: I mention above two of what, in my opinion, are the all-time best Cure songs. The others, in chronological order, (again, in my opinion) are as follows: A Forest, Primary, All Cats Are Grey, Hanging Garden, Night Like This, Just Like Heaven, Lovesong, Pictures of You, Fascination Street, and From the Edge of the Deep Green Sea. These great songs, and, of course, dozens of other near-great ones, are the reasons that The Cure has been my favorite band since the early 1990's.
yes they do.......2005-03-22
I felt like I should give this a good review since I slammed Pornography. This is the best album the Cure ever recorded. It has the somber tone of the next three albums, but it is also upbeat and wistful, too. I wish they would have tried to reproduce what they did here again. I am sure they could have done it. The next best thing is the singles comp "Japanese Whispers."
