Album Description
Originally released in 1994, Trent Reznor created THE DOWNWARD SPIRAL as both a concept album and modern day classic. This influential 90's classic is Trent Reznor's industrial cum-tragic opera view of the world and the soul's sonically detailed fall from grace. The Downward Spiral delves into despair and anger with hard guitars and brutal beats.
DUAL DISC VERSION (CD & DVD on one disc)
CD SIDE: Includes entire album in Re-Mastered CD Stereo
DVD SIDE: * Video in surround sound and Stereo of "Closer" * Videos of "March of the Pigs" and "Hurt" * Entire album in Stereo and Advanced Resolution Surround Sound * Entire album in Dolby Digital Surround Sound and Stereo * Image Gallery * Complete Discography * Random DVD menus * Surround Sound mixes by Trent Reznor
Customer Reviews:
Big time!.......2007-06-23
I love this album. I am so happy that trent remastered this album and included a couple videos as well. The music sounds verry fresh and doesn't drop in sound when I play the new master in my zune. If you love this album, than you should get it in it's digitally remastered format...the first edition sounds too low.
The best album ever!.......2007-06-21
his is the best album ever made IMO. I love it so much, that it never gets old, never gets boaring, and always sounds fresh and original. Anybody who writes less than a five star rating is either deaf, umb, or dead. Not in a cool undead way either...just old and dead.
Worth it for the videos.......2007-05-13
If this will be your first time buying The Downward Spiral, I would recommend buying this Dual Disc edition. It includes videos for "Closer" and "March of the Pigs." The videos are of pretty good quality. I would guess they are near or matching DVD quality, but I'm not sure of the resolution. The option to listen to the album mixed in 5.1 is also great. Since the disc also plays in standard CD players for a stereo mix of the tracks, you can use it just like a regular CD if you want. If you're buying this just for the surround sound, I'd recommend getting the Deluxe Edition of the album, which is a SACD and includes an album of b-sides, most of which are mixes collected for the singles that accompanied the release of TDS. Or, if you're like me and just have to have ever NIN release there is, this is a great addition to the collection because you get the videos.
DVD-Audio Bliss .......2007-05-08
All fans of 'The Downward Spiral' must hear this in 5.1 DVD-Audio. Some of the songs are concentrated across the front three channels with the rears serving as ambients. Other songs explode from all five speakers and swirl around the room like whirling dervishes. The clarity and detail is astonishing. I've compared this to a friend's SACD version and there is no contest. The DVD-A wins on all fronts: frequency range, bass response, and seperation. There is a general feel of space and depth on the DVD-A that is truly remarkable.
I was lucky enough to catch NIN on their 'Spiral' tour, and this High-Resolution version of the album is the closest I've heard to Reznor's enveloping concert experience, yet with the care and precision of an expertly crafted studio album.
If you don't have a DVD-Audio set-up, here is the perfect excuse to take the plunge. Don't delay, get it today.
Words can not describe the greatness of this album........2007-05-02
Thank you Trent Reznor.
Everything that Pretty Hate Machine was, this wasn't.
Yet that album is a timeless classic that set the tone for Rock, Pop, and Industrial for years to come.
I love this album to death, but personally I enjoyed the Fragile more...the soundscapes are amazing.

Their story is truly one of the more unusual tales of classical music today. Pop music has produced world-famous examples of all-in-the-family groups (which typically gave way to one or two solo stars as the years passed). And of course there's the Trapp Family singers of The Sound of Music fame. But the sibling pianists known as the 5 Browns are in a category all their own. They've gotten mega-exposure from profiles on 60 Minutes, Oprah, and the like as the first example in the history of the esteemed Juilliard School of Music in which five members of the same family have won admission (scholarships at that!) and studied concurrently. But if this sounds like a P.T. Barnum publicity stunt, make no mistake: Desirae, Deondra, Gregory, Melody, and Ryan are the real thing--musicians of intense dedication and talent. Their debut CD offers different perspectives on this pianistic quintet. It's not surprising that the literature isn't exactly overflowing with arrangements for five pianos--so only 4 tracks here actually have all ten hands busy tickling the ivories (arrangements of "Flight of the Bumblebee," West Side Story scenes, The Sorcerer's Apprentice and music from Grieg's Peer Gynt). The flip DVD side includes videos of their amazing in-sync dexterity for "Flight" and the Bernstein excerpts, plus a charming interview introducing the very down-to-earth Browns. They talk about how they took to the piano, one by one, at a very early age and also point out that they remain each other's best friends, which helps them weather the stresses of the competitive classical performing arts world. Other tracks involve several four-hands settings and some solos (my own favorite is Melody's beautiful rendition of Debussy's gorgeous "L'Isle joyeuese"). We're sure to hear more from this amazingly talented family--whether as a group or as soloists. --Sarah Chin

Customer Reviews:
Not all that impressed.......2007-06-01
I can't help but thinking that this is just another group of virtuoso kids that is being used for the fame of another. The music lacks fullness and invention, and tends to be a doubling of a lot of standard voicing. There is some ornamentation, and there's no doubt that each of these kids is a giften pianist, but as a group, I was not all that impressed. Cute group, though.
Fifty Very Talented Fingers..........2006-12-05
I got this CD for Christmas, and I was a little reluctant to listen to it, thinking "Oh what a yawn. Probably Mozart and Bach and--horror of horrors!--Rachmaninoff!" Well needless to say, boy was I wrong! I caught the name 'Bernstein' in the track listing, and although I had never really listened to Lenny's works, I always thought he sounded like an interesting guy, so in went the disc into the player, and on went 'Scenes from West Side Story.' I listened to it once. I listened to it twice. The third time I was hooked. I didn't recognize anything they were playing, but man it was good! It was awesome! The Browns' masterful piano version of Bernstein led me to explore deeper the marvellous music of West Side Story. To this day, after listening to recording after recording of Bernstein's West Side Story suites, the 5 Browns have a timeless rendition. It's positively brilliant. That's the only word for it--for them. They're glorious. Let classical music bore you no more, for the piano has found fifty VERY talented fingers to capture its beauty. Personally I think the very best track is West Side Story, but don't forget about The Flight of the Bumble Bee and the very fun In the Hall of the Mountain King. This is music at the height of its glory. And of course don't miss No Boundaries (note my review: I was the one who raved about The Firebird.) Enjoy, bambini!
The Browns are Great.......2006-08-04
I had vaguely heard of the Browns before I popped their CDs in my player. WOW!! What playing & what great enthusiasm. They obviously have fun making music together and they have the chops to make it exciting for the listener. Especially fun are the excerpts from Bernstein's West Side Story & Grieg's Peer Gynt. The DVD video bits are a nice bonus.
Outstanding Young Pianists.......2006-07-14
I was fortunate to see the 5 Browns in person therefore, it has been enjoyable to listen to the music that they performed in the concert. These 5 siblings are so refreshing and so talented. I recommend this CD to anyone who is looking for a CD that has outstanding piano music performed by 5 very talented young people.
Disappointed.......2006-06-07
BUYER BEWARE! When the CD Cover warns you that the "...audio side of this disc does not conform to CD specifications and therefore not all DVD and CD players will play the audio side of this disc." THEY ARE DEAD SERIOUS. I bought the album, tried it in FIVE different CD and CD/DVD players - NONE of them would play the CD. Fortunately, the retailer who I bought the CD/DVD from was willing to allow me to return it (sounds like they have had similar problems!) The 5 Browns are great artists, however, it is VERY disconcerting that their CD producers/manufacturers are putting these kind of limitations on their product.

Excellent performances, both audio and video.......2007-01-09
I was delighted with this Dual Disc. Performances are excellent, both audio and video. Recording quality is very good.
I must report some problems with CD side (cracks) on older CD player.
Great music, lousy format!.......2007-01-03
I love the music, but was VERY unhappy to be unable to play this CD on my computer. The DVD side works okay, but I can't load this to itunes on my macintosh. And I can't load the DVD to my computer and store this disk at home. If I had it to do over, I'd buy the plain vanilla CD!

The Greenhornes garage rock brashness.......2005-12-27
The more things change, the more things stay the same. If you're into late 60's garage-rock/psychadelia, 'Dual Mono' captures the defiant spirit and bluesy swagger of another time, eg, The Pretty Things, early Stones, chunky guitar riffs and snarling vocals. Just think the grit and rebellious spirit of The Nuggets 2 compliation.
I LOVE THE GREENHORNES!!!!!!!!!.......2005-09-19
when my friend went 2 the white stripes concert, she told me 2 listen 2 the band that opened 4 them. i did and i am so glad i did! my fave song is Satisfy My Mind. They are very 60's British Rock. think of them as the Rolling Stones meets the Beatles.
Best Greenhornes Yet.......2003-01-04
I don't know what happened to the chubby keyboard player, but I don't miss him. This is the best Greenhornes release yet.
Is there a weak spot on this album? I don't think so.
Along with the Mooney Suzuki these guys rank amoung the best (although not the most hyped and written about) of the current revival of 60's garage rock.
Step aside Hives and White Stripes... let the real garage rockers take over.
Rock Comes Full Circle.......2002-12-01
The Greenhornes "Dual Mono" is a definite must have for the true "Garage Rock" fan. With frontrunner Garage rock bands, like The Whitestripes, The Strokes, and The Vines, getting well deserved national attention more and more people are learning that modern rock had gone as far as it could go back in the early 90's. Now bands are going back to the era of music that revolutionized the industry. The 60's and the British Invasion. The Greenhornes do a fantastic job of capturing the finer parts of that era in "Dual Mono". Yet they are one of the best kept secrets in Garage Rock. I think they may soon step up where they belong, alongside The Strokes and The White Stripes.

You can not go wrong with ANY of his Album. I am now collecting ALL of them since my first CD which was a surprise gift to me, I just fall in love. I do Yoga everyday, and fitness work out everyday. I love listening to his CDs whenever to focus my vision, emotion, and relaxes my body. I also like to cook a nice meal while playing his CDs. I wish he was not married! ha ha.
The DualDisc.......2005-10-20
Enough others have talked about the music presented on this disc. It's good - very good - and a testament to the musicians presenting it. Plenty more reviews available for the standard version. This review is of the DualDisc.
Dualdiscs are a relatively new piece of technology - a CD on one side, DVD on the other, and offer a number of advantages, as well as a few problems. The CD side does not conform to the "redbook" CD standard, and as such cannot be played on all CD players (this is a side effect of the thickness of the DualDisc). I've seen estimates ranging from 2% to 30% incompatibility, so be aware of this. The CD side seems to be especially problematic in computer DVD drives, so if you're purchasing a DualDisc and intending to rip the material to mp3, try to borrow a disc first to check that it will work correctly. Also, the extra thickness and double sided nature of the discs means you shouldn't use them in slot loading CD players like most car stereos or multi-disc juke boxes. All that said, I haven't had problems playing the CD side of any of my DualDiscs.
The DVD side is the same standard as normal DVDs, and can be played on any DVD player or drive. This offers slightly higher quality stereo playback (although I defy anyone to hear the difference) and often Dolby 5.1 playback, as well as an opportunity for extras.
On this DualDisc, the music is presented with a number of student films which are hardly worth the time to view, and a film of Yo-Yo Ma and Ennio Morricone talking about each other - the sort of gushing that would perhaps better be kept in private. If you do not have and do not expect ever to own a system capable of 5.1 playback, I would not recommend purchasing this DualDisc. But if you have 5.1 playback, it is a revalation. The difference between stereo and 5.1 is like night and day. The sound become more open, immersive, and defined. The rear channels are not overused - most of the time you'll be hard pressed to hear them at all - but take them away and you notice their absense. Sparingly, they are used to provide an aural backdrop such as the use of choir, and each time the effect is stunning. It's hard to put a finger on precisely why the 5.1 mix sounds so much better, but it more alive, involving, and emotive, and very, very worth the premium required to buy the DualDisc version of this album.
DualDiscs are, for the most part, a waste of time if they only contain stereo tracks or if you can't play back in 5.1. If you have a home theater, then buy this disc and enjoy a masterful soundscape and experience.
Essential Collection of Ennio Morricone Music Performed by Yo-Yo Ma.......2005-10-06
When Ennio Morricone & Yo-Yo Ma met at the Oscars in 2001 (Morricone nominated for Malena; Ma performing on the Oscar winning score to Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) they both shared great interest in teaming up together. Three years later this album came to fruition. A stunning compilation of Morricone's music, newly orchestrated for Ma's cello.
The music is, as always exceptional from Morricone, ranging from the rich and spiritual 'The Mission', to the idiosyncratic genius of 'The Good, The Bad And The Ugly'. Morricone has in places significantly altered the music to accommodate the cello. Yo-Yo Ma's supreme command over his instrument combines with an excellent performance of the Roma Sinfonietta under Morricone's baton.
The album starts with a brief suite from 'The Mission'. In Gabriel's Oboe (surely one of the most beautiful pieces of music written), Ma weaves his cello throughout the piece in spectacular fashion. The cello starts playing the melody, giving way to the oboe, and then plays in countermelody - breathtaking stuff.
The suite for the films of Giuseppe Tornatore starts off with the exquisite, 'Playing Love' from 'The Legend Of 1900'. Morricone's regular pianist, Gilda Butta, plays splendidly throughout the beautiful track. Other highlights include the nostalgic 'Cinema Paradiso' (one of Morricone's best), and the gorgeous theme from 'Malena'.
Many people became familiar with Morricone through his music from Sergio Leone's legendary films. Morricone had an unprecedented freedom to write the music for those films, often writing the themes before the film had even been shot. The haunting music from 'Once Upon A Time In America' is almost overwhelming in sheer emotion. Yo-Yo Ma's performance of 'Cockeye's Song' is outstanding. The main theme from 'Once Upon A Time In The West is played without the usual solo soprano part, instead replaced by the cello. The most unusual choice of music included on the album is 'The Ecstasy Of Gold' from 'The Good, The Bad And The Ugly'. I was unsure how Morricone could make it work for the cello but he certainly does. This piece of music is drastically altered from its original form but Morricone keeps the spirit of the piece intact. It is a breathtaking track, surely one of, if not Morricone's best.
Next up is a short suite of music from the films of Brian DePalma. The main theme from 'Casualties Of War' is played without the choir. The 'Death Theme' form 'The Untouchables' features a sad and touching piece of music played beautifully by Ma, his cello replacing the sax in the original piece.
The album is rounded off with two suites of music that may be obscure to some listeners, but are equal in quality to the rest of the music that has come before hand. 'Moses' and 'Marco Polo' are featured first. 'Marco Polo' contains one of Morricone's best themes, magnificent; highly memorable. The album ends with two beautiful tracks from 'The Lady Caliph'.
The album is beautifully presented with many pictures and quotes of the composer and performer. This version of this excellent compilation features a Dual Disc. One side of the disc contains the album playable on most Audio CD players. On the other side the album is a DVD. The complete album is presented in a 5.1 Dolby Digital surround mix. It sounds outstanding, providing a far better listen for those with the capability. The DVD includes exclusive footage of the two legendary musicians talking together and recording the music. This disc also features four short films set to the music.
This is really an exceptional compilation of great music. I cannot recommend it highly enough. It comes as an excellent introduction to the music of both musicians and is also a satisfying listen to their fans.

Where Have You Been?.......2005-04-23
First person to review this album? This is nuts! It is such an utterly great thing, and no-one's talking? Which amazon is this? Andromeda's?
Anyway, I simply rest my case on the utterly superb and lyrical Second Chances, towards the end, tucked away amongst all the other unbelievably GREAT PLAYING WRITING AND ORCHESTRATION on this SUPERB cd.
With a galaxy of superb contemporary music talent and completely original compositional and arrangement skill, this album can only ever grow in greatness.

Contraband Rocks.......2007-03-23
The best of G'N'R and STP have one of the best debuts in Rock and Roll in a long, long time. Scott Weiland is in fine form, and Slash is the master shredder of hard rock, pealing off killer solo after killer solo, without the the fickle Axl to bring the proceedings to a crawl. Anxiously awaiting chapter 2.
Only True Rock Band Out There.......2005-07-26
This album is simply amazing; it sounds as real rock would sound in the Twentieth Century, and not like the trashy grunts put out by the likes of rocker wannabe bands such as Blink 182, or the sickening wails of Good Charlotte (most appropriately known as Good Grief). The best of the best is here. Get it one way or the other.
Great twenty-first century rock 'n' roll........2005-07-14
A really great CD. Velvet Revolver is an amazing hard-working, hard-rocking band. Rock 'n' roll has been suffering since Nirvana. Velvet Revolver has brought it back. Some other new rock 'n' roll bands you should check out are Silvertide and Jet. Sucker Train Blues and Dirty Little Thing are very similar. That isn't bad though. The more the better! Do It For The Kids is pretty good but not as good as we will hear from the boys. Big Machine and Illegal I Song are better but still not as good as some others that we'll hear such as Spectacle, which is a great romping rock 'n' roll song. Fall To Pieces is a ballad but great as they go. The one-two-three punch of Headspace, Superhuman, and Set Me Free. The latter is my favorite song off the album. Followed by Headspace, then Superhuman so you could imagine how much it means to me that theey are all in a row. You Got No Right is the second best ballad out of the three. Fall To Pieces being the first. Slither is a great rocker and I never tire of it. I already mentioned Dirty Little Thing, and I ain't got all day. Loving the Alien is the third ballad and it's pretty good.

One of the best modern rock albums out there.......2005-06-01
Contraband (2004.) Velvet Revolver's first album.
In recent years, Stone Temple Pilots disbanded and Guns 'N' Roses has been left in ruins. Fortunately, several of the musicians who had made these bands so great weren't about to stop rocking. In late spring of 2004, Velvet Revolver released their first album, Contraband. This new band featured former Stone Temple Pilots vocalist Scott Weiland, and former Guns 'N' Roses members Slash and Duff McKagan. The two bands that these musicians came from were wildly different, and at this point in time, modern rock and roll was at an all-time low. Does Velvet Revolver's debut prevail? Read on for my review.
When I first heard about this band, I had some serious doubts. Guns 'N' Roses and Stone Temple Pilots are two totally different bands, and I thought that combining members of the bands would be an instant recipe for failure. My doubts were only strengthed by the fact that rock and roll of the era in which this album was released was at an all-time low in terms of quality. My skepticism was shattered as soon as I sat down and actually listened to the album. THIS is the way early twenty-first century rock and roll should sound! Rather than combining the stylings of the bands that the members came from, this album sounds more like a continuation of early-era Stone Temple Pilots, and that's a very good thing. Admittingly, on a few tracks, Weiland's vocals take some serious getting used to, but once you adjust to them, you'll agree that they are excellent. And, as you probably would have suspected, Slash and Duff McKagan are no slouches when it comes to the instrumental duties in the band. Another great strength of this album is the song diversity. There are straight-up hard and heavy rockers, slower, grunge-based rockers, and even a few ballads. The ballads are surprisingly good tracks! From start to finish, Contraband doesn't have a dull moment. Whether it's the big radio hits like Slither, Fall To Pieces, or Dirty Little Thing, or one of the lesser-known cuts, it's all good. Why can't all early twenty-first century rock and roll sound this good?
When you buy this album, make sure that you are buying the uncensored explicit lyrics version and not the edited version (there IS an edited version out there, so beware.) Something else I noticed is that the album comes in a slipcase, and there are many different colored slipcases that the album comes in. Of course, this is strictly cosmetic, so whatever one you buy is a matter of personal preference. I strongly recommend buying the album at Best Buy above all other retailers, because the Best Buy version has an extra disc of bonus tracks. I won't get into the technical issues here; I think the other reviews/reviewers covered that pretty well.
Velvet Revolver's debut album is nothing short of excellent. There were a number of other rock bands from this era who all pretty much sucked, and Velvet Revolver's music blew theirs out of the water, hands down. If you're a fan of the Stone Temple Pilots, this is an album well worth adding to your collection.
It's Not DualDisc's Fault.......2005-05-15
Just a note to anyone who is afraid of buying a DualDisc because they won't be able to rip the songs... With Velvet Revolver's Contraband, it doesn't matter. I bought the album originally when it was released last year. The regular cd's have been encrypted as well. There are ways around it if you really feel the need to rip the songs from the disc, but it's not only the DualDisc format that prevents copying. Just a fair warning. I actually commend artists who are taking these steps to keep their material from being handed out for free online. As for the album, yeah, the DVD side is a bit disappointing, but that doesn't mean that it's not an amazing album. One of the best of 2004 by far. The enhanced sound on the DVD side is fantastic, but if you aren't into that, go with the regular cd version. (But it won't matter for rippers... the cd's actually have a warning label on the front telling the consumer that it cannot be copied... it's pretty easy to see.)

This Judas Priest release includes a DVD with the 30 minute Reunited documentary that lays the ground work for first new music from the original lineup in 15 years. From the slow crescendo of guitar and a scream at the beginning, this new outing from the reformed and re-invigorated Priest states one thing very clearly: The band is back and ready to reclaim their crown as hard rock titans. The songs, production, and performances are all on par with classics such as British Steel and Screaming For Vengeance. And the album definitely makes references Priest's past, from the opening screech of "Judas Is Rising" to more direct lyrical name-checking (Painkiller in "Demonizer" and Sad Wings of Destiny in "Angel"). But there is a newer experimentation - a slower, darker streak - also evident on Halford's underrated Crucible, that lets the listener know the band is not resting on its laurels. The is very evident on the 10 minute closer "Lock Ness", an epic on par with songs off Opeth's masterful Deliverance. Make no mistake: The Metal Gods are definitely back. --Robert Arambel

Oh my goodgoods mates. This may very well be the sonic icecream i've desired for a yonder day. The beginning = great.com. The end = great.com.au The middle = great.com.au/nopants. In the summation to follow i will allude to blood dripping from my horses nose and the relevance this has to Judas Priest's latest (and most delicious) release.
Out came my leathers and handy ol' leathery whip. I tilted my leather cap slightly to the side, covering one eye and cranked Angel Of The Retributions. How good? Whispers of grand appreciation doth quiver! Manowar aint invited to my graduation, cos they wear tight the vests of brotherhood. This is the kind of album that has recently been responsible for global warming in the tropics, but thats ok, because they like their heat in the tropics.
To quote a famous relative of mine, Hunky Uncle Raymond, "This album be thine gift of eternal bliss. Dinner will be ready soon. Apricots and beans! But sleep lightly dearest son, for beasts reside below your comfy bed, with teeth like razors and a craving for young meat. Should you be taken tonight, so be it. But will you haunt our dreams...?"
Back to Manowar. This album isn't by Manowar. So don't buy it with the intention of adding to your ever growing Manowar collection. Because this is Judas Priest. Not Manowar. Judas. Priest that is.
Manowar.
Best (Whole) Priest Album Since "Screaming For Vengeance".......2007-04-01
How good is this 2005 Judas Priest CD, which is highlighted by the return of their original "metal god" singer Rob Halford? Well, let me tell you a story: I bought it last November and fully digested the recording for 2-3 weeks. I felt it was decent new Priest material. I then got rid of it. About 3 months later I started yearning to hear certain songs from the CD again; this kept up for a few weeks until I finally had to buy it again (!). I am now of the mind that ANGEL OF RETRIBUTION stands with the very best Priest albums and is, in fact, their best (whole) album since the stellar SCREAMING FOR VENGEANCE from 1982.
Here's a run-down of the songs:
(1.) "Judas Rising." This is a decent, driving opener with a sinister edge. I can take it or leave it, however. It's nothing phenomenal. Personal Rating: 3/5 Stars.
(2.) "Deal With The Devil." This one is even more driving than the first tune and WAY more catchier. Everything works here; it's smokin' and magical. The lyrics address Judas Priest's slow rise to fame as they almost solitarily forged this musical genre called metal. The title and chorus, if taken literal, suggests that they made a deal with the devil to achieve success. Of course their just pokin' fun at the whole idea of "the devil's music," but I personally would never joke about such things. Personal Rating: 4.5/5 Stars.
(3.) "Revolution." This short ditty is the big 'hit' of the album, kinda along the lines of "United" or "You've Got Another Thing Comin'." It definitely jams and is full of hooks. You'll hear a little Led Zeppelin vibe here and there. Personal Rating: 4/5 Stars.
(4.) "Worth Fighting For." This song also has 'hit' written all over it. It's sort of a ballad, but not quite, if you know what I mean. Everything magically works. One of the highlights of the album. Personal Rating: 5/5 Stars.
(5.) "Demonizer." This is a fast, aggressive, double-bass driven number. The lyrics are sci-fi/fantasy oriented like "Sinner," "Exciter," "Saints in Hell" and numerous other Priest tunes. Personal Rating: 4/5 Stars.
(6.) "Wheels of Fire." This is a rockin' and well-done biker tune. Enjoyable, if nothing else. Personal Rating: 3.5/5 Stars.
(7.) "Angel." This is a beautiful, heartfelt ballad. I don't think it's about a woman, though; I think it's about a literal angel, possibly even the Angel of death (!). This is an incredible piece in every way; it ranks right up there with similar such Priest songs like "Dreamer Deciever" and "Here Come the Tears." Personal Rating: 5/5 Stars.
(8.) "Hellrider." Another smokin', aggressive number with sci-fi/fantasy oriented lyrics (like "Sinner" or "Exciter"). This song kicks a$$! Comparable to "Tyrant" (in particular the midsection of the song). Personal Rating: 4.5/5 Stars.
(9.) "Eulogy." A short, atmospheric, nigh-melancholic piece with a piano thrown in for good measure. Magnificent! Personal Rating: 5/5 Stars.
(10.) "Lochness." This is a long juggernaut about the Lochness monster. The opening is incredibly creative and the main riffs and stanzas are powerful and heavy. Unfortunately the chorus, albeit epic, is rather lame. Still, it's great to have priest do a heavy epic song like this. Personal Rating: 4.5/5 Stars.
FINAL ANALYSIS: It may not strike you at first (because it's new and nostalgia has no place) but ANGEL OF RETRIBUTION ranks up there with the very best Priest albums. In fact, this is the best Priest recording since SCREAMING FOR VENGEANCE. Don't get me wrong, they've had many great SONGS since that time, for instance, "Hell Is Home," "Subterfuge," "Cyberface," "Touch of Evil," "Sentinel," etc. but ANGEL OF RETRIBUTION is definitely their best WHOLE album since then.
Of course, the real test of whether or not a CD is any good is if you keep playing it. Well, I can't stop playing ANGEL OF RETRIBUTION!
Great Music Crappy Disk!.......2007-03-30

A little too heavy at times.......2007-01-12
A good album worth hearing, but the teenage hopefullness from his first album has faded into a false sense of maturity and without the same freshness. There are some good songs- but nothing like the first album.
A John Mayer Gallery.......2006-04-28
John has portrayed an extremely mature musical concept of where he wants to take his listener. He first creates a picture frame, then brush to paper,he starts to paint a masterpiece. The story of the song comes alive and surrounds the heart of the listener with symmetry, metaphor, irony, prosody, alliteration and commitment to organized thought, weight and feel.He evokes the listeners senses with"visual writing" that means something. Pick any one of his "Heavier Things" songs "Clarity","New Deep","Home Life","Wheel", or "Daughters" as an example of these traits and superb qualities. Colorful lyrics, as his, are hard to come by, only an exquisite forsight into language accomplishes this.He presents an uncanny knowledge of how to take you on his senses journey. I am a very appreciative listener of everything encountered by John Mayer's artistic ability.I look forward to enjoying his talent for a long time.Happy listener who can't get enough says, thanks , for the review space. David Baerwald & John Mayer ??.......2006-02-09
They have to be related. The songs and the way they are sung are so familiar to me. So many doubles for example sirens in the city, come back to bed(mayer) colette (baerwald).Mayer is either his son or has taken on his voice and style, kinda hard to do and make it. Anyone else thinking this?
Great album, BAD BAD format!.......2006-01-10
First of all, Dual Discs are NOT a high resolution sound format! The DVD side's sound is merely Dolby Digital or PCM encoded information and no better than any soundtrack on a feature film that is released on DVD! And the sampling rates are very very similar to CD anyway! You basically get a two sided disc that HOPEFULLY works on one of your players.
Secondly, it's really hit and miss to find a cd player that will work the dual discs. A cheap one or car cd player may do it, but my expensive Denon won't! If you want a high resolution version get the hard to find SACD version or just buy the regular run of the mill, Audio CD version.
Great Album! ...but USELESS format can't be put on my IPOD........2005-10-25
if you use an IPOD, DO NOT buy this version of the album. Buy the regular version instead. The DualDisc format cannot be imported into ITUNES so you cannot put the songs on the IPOD.
I WASTED my money on this version and now have to spend MORE money so I can actually listen to the songs I already paid for!
I will never again make the mistake of buying a DualDisc CD!!!
However, the music is excellent and I highly recommend the OTHER version of the album.
