5 out of 5 stars A dark and emotional epic.......2002-05-12

It has been a long time since I took to an album like I have to Anekdoten's From Within. Previous releases were more derivitive and aggressive, their first CD, Vemod sounds very much like mid-70's King Crimson with their follow up, Nucleus showing a densely mixed, more developed band. But it is From Within that shows Anekdoten further establishing their own style.

There are still plenty of King Crimson like moments both in the angular playing and some gorgeous Mellotron sections. On From Within there is more subtlety resulting in larger dynamics and more quiet sections than on previous albums.

There is a pervading sadness and beauty throughout the CD. Songs such as Slow Fire and The Sun Absolute have beautiful moments and intense polyrhythmic segments. Songs like the opening one, two punch of From Within and Kiss Of Life are stark and intense workouts.

The vocals are greatly improved on From Within. On previous albums they seemed almost forced. Now they integrate with the mood of the song.

Anekdoten is interesting in that they are part progressive rock, part post rock/experimental. They play with angular intensity and a near punk rock quality of timbre while introducing progressive elements. This probably alienates post rockers AND progressive listeners which is a shame as Anekdoten are a great band that deserves more attention than they get.

2 out of 5 stars Mediocre effort.......2000-08-10

Anekdoten are not exactly original, sounding like an angry King Crimson on a cloudy day most of the time, with what could be Jon Anderson's shier young brother whispering in a wispy, fragile voice. This, Anekdoten's third studio album, is an emasculated disappointment. I think somewhere, buried in the deep and muffled morass of production, there's about 20 minutes or so of good music. Unfortunately the album is around 45 minutes long. Ironically, it seems endless when you are listening to it. The epic, long-winded mellotron-laced songs on this album tend to put me to sleep rather than electrify me. Endless, churning, droning, repetitive music - it could almost be classified as ambient it is so sparse and uneventful. The changes in mood are thundering but it takes them forever to get to where they are going, and by the time they get there what is the point anyways? Nucleus is far superior, and far more intense, with its aggressive production and songwriting. This just sounds like weepy goth-prog. A bad misstep by an otherwise talented band.

4 out of 5 stars A return to the fine from of vemod.......2000-04-05

This is a highly atmospheric (read: mellotronic) work, much less angular than Nucleus, which I did not enjoy. Shades of early-middle King Crimson, with awesome bass and aforementioned mellotrons.

Highly worthwhile.
