Groovy Groovin'.......2000-10-26

This is the second installment of a mix series released by the upstart NYC-based record label, Groovin' Records. The first one featured tracks from Choco, whose tracks have been storming European dance-floors for years. The second one picks up from where the first House Deluxe left off, compiling some hot tracks from mostly NYC-based artists. Canadian DJs/artists Dino & Terry mix the selections into a continuous groove. It is a showcase of what artists in NYC have to offer in the house category today, and what an interesting showcase!

It really picks up when you hit "Uptown Revival" by Choco, a dreamy deep house track that rumbles underneath your skin. Then the mix flows into a hot track from Palo Science called "Solar Eclipse", which sounds like you're running through the underbrush of some Brazilian jungle during a solar eclipse. A tribal track with soft, almost offbeat keys that definitely will get a dance-floor jumping and gyrating. Follow that up with "Jazmina", remixed by Masters At Work, a soulful house track with vocals that is almost reminiscent of "New Jersey Deep" from Black Science Orchestra. The pace slows down slightly here but it picks up again with G-Dubs' "The Panhandler", a jazzy piece with a muted sax playing over a playful keyboard line that bounces. You can almost see a panhandler walking through subway cars on this mad dash through NYC's mass transit system.

The other highlight of this album starts with the Grand Wizard Choco's "Sweet Sweet Garage Music", which sounds like a track from the mind of Roy Davis Jnr. This is definitely one of the tracks on this compilation that deserves more play! Sweet ethereal sounding keys that swiftly dance up and down the track, filling the track with a subtle intensity. It wraps you up like a warm blanket and smothers you in sweetness, a throwback to the fetal position. Follow that up with Larow's "Rendez Vous at Larow's", a previously unreleased track, another deep sweet track with keys that remind you of summer in the 70s. G-Dubs picks up the pace with his "Eros" track, a dance-floor sweat-a-thon where bodies of flesh merge temporarily and repeatedly.

One thing that I really appreciated was the presence of a medley from House Deluxe I at the end. Really thoughtful, for people who haven't heard the first volume, this is their chance to hear snippets of what was on there and decide whether it's worth picking up. This is a feature I would like to see on a lot more series. I would've preferred it after the bonus track, but either way, I found it quite useful and thoughtful.

There are some slow spots and the mix isn't the tightest in the world, but the real downer is more of a technical thing. It's the track listings. Somewhere in the first two tracks, the track listing jumps ahead by one. Some points the track index isn't as tight as it could be so the listener should be alert when listening if they want to follow the track listings. That is the major negative to this album, otherwise this is a great Saturday afternoon before the party type mix, but not the major event of your party.

In this day and age of musical division and electronic/dance gang-mentalities, this CD reminds us that sometimes you have to go back to the roots. It's all about the groove, the funk, the heart and the soul. BT, Sasha and John Digweed are cool, but sometimes the kids (of all ages) forget that "their" music is OUR music and OUR music started with disco and garage. If you're a true dance music fan you need to own this CD. A friend made a joke that his favorite style, garage/filter-disco/house, is making a comeback...my response is that it never left. Thank you to the folks at Groovin' that going to church is cool, as long as you're read the Bible!!! :)

Try to find the FIRST Martini Mood.......2003-12-14

If ever I recommend a chill-out CD, that's the one I recommend. While this one does have some solid cuts on it, it's far from being the better of the two. Released on "Royal Ear Force", I think that this series swapped labels, something to that effect.

Having said that, this is still a pretty good lounge compilation. The Funky Lowlives, Duplex Inc., Mo Horizons, Kyoto Jazz Massive, United Future Organization (UFO), Dzihan & Kamien and Nicola Conte all feature with some pretty cool cuts, with their tracks remixed. But unfortunately there's quite a bit of bland music between most of the songs.

If you are fortunate enough to have the very first "Get Into the Martini Mood", then be forewarned that IMO this one is a step back. And for those interested in the first Martini Mood, I'll say again that it's one of my favorite lounge compilations, and has a rare remix - of Jaffa's "Elevator" as done by Nicola Conte. Also on the first is "Only You" by Popmachine, "Jet Society" by Cordoba Orchestra, "Fly Away" by Mo Horizons and a few other artists make some pretty cool appearances like Buscemi, Llorca, The Dining Rooms and Thievery Corporation.
